Pb: Who is Muhanjii? M: Muhanjii is an urban rap artist with a touch of soul, old skool and the gospel. Pb: What category would you classify your music? M: I classify my music as contemporary God centered music that always has truth and relates with society first hand. Pb: How is working as a solo artist as opposed as to working with a group? M: It has amazingly opened my eyes to things I did not know I could do, creatively it makes me more intentional when I write and what I say on records & spiritually growth is important because you give what you have. Pb: As an upcoming artist, what are the challenges you face? M: As an up and coming artist studio time, promo & marketing can really be hectic and getting it professionally done is very expensive. Pb: You have a lot of energy on stage, what drives you? M: My drive is being impactful and that I always want to leave an impression on whoever sees me even if it’s the first time.
Pb: Tell us more about your musical journey from when you realized you want to be a performing & recording artist M: My music journey started way back in high school and after a couple of transitions I now realized I wanted to do it professionally in 2014 where I knew my strengths, weaknesses and I was working to be better and better both as a recording and a performing artist too. Pb: Whom do you look up to as an artist? M: As an artist, I look up to a lot of people. However, since I grew up, I always wanted to tell my stories in music so I looked up to Eminem quite a lot Pb: What advice would you give to the people that look up to you? M: Trust the process, be intentional and never stop. Pb: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? M: I see myself winning souls with this music; most importantly I would like my impact to be felt, selling out shows & being a voice of reason in the culture for Jesus. PB: Last words? M: When the praises go up blessings come down. Yaaah, Agency5ve is the label!!!! Interview by Njeri Kimani • Photos from MUHANJII

B
orn in 1978 in Dakar, Senegal, Alune Wade grew up surrounded by music. His father was a leader of a local symphonic orchestra, so Alune developed a natural gift for music at the young age of six.
At just 13, the bass became his chosen instrument. Though his mother objected, wanting her son to further his academic studies rather than become a professional musician, the support and encouragement from his father inspired Alune to perfect his craft and hone an original voice on bass. After years of rigorous music instruction and performing in local bands all over Dakar, at 17, Alune ultimately gained a prominent spot as a bassist in his father’s orchestra. Just one year later, he auditioned and was chosen to perform with the great Senegalese musician Ismael Lo, touring as his bassist all across the globe. In 2006, Alune released his debut solo album. MBOLO (which means “unity” in Wolof) combines his training in African rhythms with more contemporary and modern jazz influences. He further explored those influences on his 2010 effort AYO NENE. Released in 2015, HAVANA-PARIS-DAKAR is a bridge between both Alune’s native and chosen homes (Dakar and Paris, respectively), as well as the birthplace of his featured and frequent collaborator, Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa. Alune Wade was the leading act at the Safaricom Jazz Lounge concert that was held on Saturday 4th November 2017 at Uhuru Gardens. @AluneWade
