Pb: How long have you been Singing and when did you discover your Passion for Music? Naz: It’s been about 16 years now; and I discovered my Passion for Music through Poetry. I used to love doing Poems in School; and I also loved Hip-Hop growing up. So I tried to combine the two; and that is how I found myself doing Rap. Pb: You’ve been known as Kenya’s First Lady for years, but then you went Silent for a while. Do you still believe you hold the Title? Naz: Yeah, the First is the First, unless you came before the First, ama? (laughs). It’s about being the First Female MC and the First Female Rapper in East Africa. That can never go away. Pb: How would you say your Music has evolved from ‘Kenyan Girl, Kenyan Boy’, to your new Song: ‘Over You’? Naz: I think right now I am Embracing more of the Genres that I can do. I used to Focus on Hip-Hop: like in ‘Kenyan Girl, Kenyan Boy’ my Verse was Rap, but now I embrace all the Styles - like Dancehall and Reggae. So, I try to be that Artist who can do all the Three comfortably, and not just pick One. So I would say my Music has Evolved, in that I can do More now; plus I am more comfortable Experimenting with other Sounds. Pb: What inspired your new Song: ‘Over You’? Naz: Basically I wrote the Song because everybody has been talking about my Relationship, my Divorce, my Separation, who I am Dating, etc; so I thought ‘Over You’ was going to be one of those Songs that gets everyone’s Attention. Pb: Your next Album: Evo-llusion; What is it about and When can we expect it? Naz: Evo-llusion is just basically me, some 16 years later. It’s like an Evolved Dream. So it has different Sounds and different Themes going on. I have Reggae, Dancehall and Hip-Hop songs; so you’ll be able to hear a lot of Growth - Vocally and Lyrically. It should be Out in the next 2 or 3 Months. We wanted to Release it last year; but we felt there was something missing, so we are working on that. Pb: You recently started a Fitness journey. What inspired it? Naz: I think the real Inspiration is just to be Healthy - and not Obese or Sick. To be there for my Son and watch him Grow. Rather than be Overweight, Sick and Slow. Also, to give better Performances, so that my Stamina on Stage is better. I never really went into the Gym, because I wanted to lose weight; I just wanted to be Fit. So, I went in there with a very Open Mind, so I think that is why I got really good Results.

Pb: What would you tell someone Interested in the Same? Naz: I’d tell them Not to Procrastinate about Working Out. I know a lot of People who are always like: we’ll Start next Week or next Month. People are calling me to ask for Help; but I can’t, because You have to help Yourself. You have to go to the Gym every day, You have to Eat Clean, and You have to be the Person to Motivate yourself. They have the Strength within them to do it. Pb: What is the One Thing you are most Proud of? Naz: I would say my Son. I am Proud to be a Mother raising a Child. Pb: What is your take on the current State of the Kenyan Music Industry? Naz: I think the Growth is Amazing! We’ve come a long way. I just think we now need to have more Unity within the Artists, then the Industry will be good. Pb: With February being the Month of Love, are you Planning anything Special? Naz: I am going to Release another Love Song. Pb: What Advice would you give Anyone who looks up to you? Naz: I’d tell them to Follow their Dream, Do what their Heart tells them and always Believe in Yourself. Interview by Muthoni Gitau.

The Swahili Jazz Band hails from Mombasa, comprising of Juma Tutu, Mad Max, Cholo, Ted Mwangi,

Emanuel Olabode and Tatuu. Swahili Jazz is an original Kenyan sound, featuring a blend of Mijikenda, with Asian, Western and Arabic influences. It is highly enriched with poetic Swahili lyrics. The Band was Formed by Juma Tutu - a Swahili Jazz Artist, Saxophonist, Composer, Singer and Performer. He had been a Musician with Generations Band, Bango Sounds and Them Mushrooms in Mombasa, before forming his own Tutu Band in 2003 - to take his Music a notch higher, by Concentrating on his own Compositions of Swahili Jazz. In 2013, the Band held a Campaign aimed at popularising their new Brand, via monthly Swahili Jazz Nights at Carnivore Simba Saloon in Nairobi. Later, the Band also performed at Blankets & Wine and the World Travel Awards; as well as for His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta during the Machakos Investors Forum and at the Mashujaa Day State House Garden Party. Juma Tutu is enrolled at Tangaza University, where he is enhancing his Music Knowledge; while the Band is actively involved in Mentoring young Artists in Church, via a Music Programme they run.
