Happy New Year PHAM! As we start the year we speak to an alternative Folk artist, percussionist & guitarist: TETU SHANI. Pb:Why Troubador? TS: I chose the name Troubadour because of my background. You see I grew up the son of a diplomat, as a result I moved all over Africa and around North America. I took a piece of each place with me and infuse it in my music like the troubadours of old: The traveling storytellers of Europe or the griots of West Africa. Pb:What was that moment that made you decide you wanted to do music? TS: It was the moment when I realized I couldn’t do much else! I couldn’t see myself working in a corporation and so I needed to figure out what I was good at quickly and begin developing it. Thank God I chose the right thing. Pb:How would you describe your sound? TS: My sound is always evolving. It’s gone from finger style guitar to Afro-folk to pop and currently I would describe it as Afro-rock. It’s becoming very hard to define music these days because most of us artists want to be fluid. Pb:What inspires your music? TS: Its never one thing that inspires my music. It’s always something different. A book, conversation, a song I hear on the radio or a bird call. Pb:You are a very soulful performer, what inspires you? TS: My performances are soulful because I’m playing authentic music. All my songs come from an honest place and that’s reflected in my performances.

Pb:What has been your highlight in your career as a performer? TS: The highlight in my career as a performer has been performing my living room sessions. These are live performances that I do in people’s homes right in their living rooms. They are intimate, fun and use all of the qualities that make me unique as a performer. Pb:Your tag line: For every sliver on the spectrum of emotion, there is a song; what does this mean to you? TS: It’s my life philosophy musically. My journey as a musician is to tap into as many emotions as possible using my music as a tool. I’m on a mission to prove that Kenyans listen to a wide variety of music. Pb:Among your songs, what would you say is a fan favorite? TS: It’s definitely “African Sun.” I haven’t recorded it yet but that’s the one people respond to immediately. Pb:What excites you about your musical journey thus far? TS: That it keeps growing. That I keep growing and getting better, the sky is truly the limit. Pb:How do you balance your personal and professional life? TS: Without the help and support of my wife it would be impossible. She really helps me calm down and rest. There are times when she’s like, “You’ve been working too much and It’s time to relax.” I’m glad I have someone who can tell me that. Pb:What advice would you give upcoming artists? TS: Have a vision/purpose/mission for your music and be consistent with it!

deejay-deshal @deshaldj
MY REAL NAME IS: Deshal Gudka. I GOT MY STAGE NAME FROM: My Real Name. I STUDIED AT: Braeburn High Nairobi. I USUALLY PLAY: all Genres of Music . I PREFER TO PLAY: all because the Crowd and my fans love a Good Mix of Music. I GOT INTO DEEJAYING: back in 1988. I LEARNT DEEJAYING: from my mentor: DJ Addams formerly of Club Boomerang. HOW HAVE YOU REMAINED RELEVANT IN THE INDUSTRY ALL THIS LONG?: Well if you need to remain in this beautiful industry you must give it your 100 % and play for the Crowd. Remember you are there because of the crowd and not for yourself, so give it your all. IT’S BEEN: 30 years. FOR A LONG TIME KENYA HAS BEEN FAULTED FOR NOT HAVING A KENYAN SOUND. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION: I Think Kenyan Music was better then what we have now. The songs had meanings, and could be played for all ages. I’m
sorry to say this but the new generation really need to look back and up their Game . MY MAJOR CHALLENGE WHEN STARTING OUT WAS: getting hold of the equipment and Music , them days there was No piracy we used to buy original cds and LPS which used to cost a lot. Currently, the DJ’s get it the eazy way that’s by downloading from the net and I would say this has actually killed this Industry . MY MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: are Production and Remixes, playing on a south African online Station (Old Skool Radio ) www.oldskoolradio.co.za where I do my midweek live show from 8 – 10pm and also opening www.desibeatz.fm our online Station now available on Tune in App and the site (check It Out). IF I WASN’T A DEEJAY I’D BE: (Sijui) because music has always been in my Blood and can’t think of anything better for me then making people happy through my talent . I WOULD ADVISE ALL THE UPCOMING DJS: to Learn this Beautiful Art from Scratch that’s go through all the stages of Deejaying, Learn Turntables there after CDJs and then Come to the controllers. One also needs to learn the basics of sound engineering so that you are aware of what you are doing and trouble shoot when a problem comes up at an event . *OUFSWJFX CZ /KFSJ ,JNBOJ t 1IPUPT GSPN %+ %FTIBM
