THA MOVEMENT
This Month, we caught up with Tha Movement, a group of 7 amazingly Talented Musicians and friends. The band members include: Robin Moustache on the Guitar, Joe Mutoria - Keyboard, Nelfrey Ongeri - Violin, Justice “JayPee” Ayiengah - Bass, Eric “Kimbassax” Maru - Saxophone, Abiarthur Gichuhi - Drums & Collins “Ayrosh” Irungu - Lead Vocals.
Pb: How long have you all known each other? TMB: The Band was formed in late 2015. It came together with a vision aimed at wowing the local and international music scene with a new type of sound. Pb: How did you meet? TMB: We were all Session Instrumentalists gigging for different artists. As luck would have it, we all ended up doing a session together and the chemistry was palpable from day one! Pb: What's the origin of the band name? TMB: It was our first ever jam session for a Hip Hop trio called “125” who were working under producer Dillie of "House of Dillie” and we were brainstorming on how the Band should be Introduced at the show we were rehearsing for when “Tha Movement” came up and stuck with us to date!
can relate with being the business side of the music. We always strive to be a niche product for the music industry and to change misconceptions about session bands that also do original music. Balancing this and trying to work out a long term business model from the music is the main challenge.
Pb: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? TMB: We will also be launching our official website in a couple of weeks, which will have all the links and Movement info in one space. It will also be more interactive and will host behind the scenes content on our journey. We will announce the official release date on our social media handles. Pb: Do you have any upcoming shows? TMB: A big part of our music and performances comes from collaborating with musicians who love our sound. We are excited to be working with Ugandan Soul Singer, Sandra Nankoma, as she performs in Nairobi on 4th July 2018 during the Thursday Night Live Show, 7th July 2018 at the GoDown Gig and 12th July at the, Fresh Fusion series at Two Rivers Mall. We are also curating our concert. All the details will be updated on our Social Media Handles.
Pb: What genre of music do you consider your work to be? TMB: Tha Movement Band delivers an eruptive amalgam of Funk, Rock and Soul with a little bit of everything from Pop influences to Sultry Jazz and Hip Hop with R&B undertones, all these are heavily influenced by African music and culture.
Pb: What was the inspiration behind, Java Love? TMB: Java Love was composed by Tha Movement and written by a upcoming talented singer songwriter: Wamvii. The intricate melodies and instrumentation we did set a backdrop to tell the story of a blossoming young love. The couple featured in the video depict humble beginnings and the hardships of “hustling” faced every day on the dating scene but seldom portrayed on social media.
Pb: Who are your major influences? TMB: Since the band is made up of such diverse personalities and musical backgrounds, everyone brings a certain ‘vibe’ and influence to the overall movement sound. Across the board our influences include, The Roots, Fella Kuti, Snarky Puppy, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Incognito, Lokua Kanza, Freshly Ground, Hugh Masekhela and the list goes on.
Pb: Any last words? TMB: We are grateful for the many opportunities we have had so far. The feedback we have received has been encouraging as we work at honing our craft and growing as a band and as individual musicians. This is just the beginning of Tha Movement Revolution
Pb: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? TMB: That’s a tough one to pick. I can summarize the main challenge, which fellow musicians and creatives
