T
his month we take a look at the musical Journey of the life of Kenyan Afro soul Artiste, Singer Songwriter & C.E.O UTAM Festival: FADHILEE ITULYA.
He was born in 1988 in Kakamega, Western Kenya, but raised in Nairobi. Fadhilee’s dream is to unveil the authentic Kenyan sound that will be a bridge between what has been there and what is going to come. His love affair with the guitar started with the three chords he was taught by his mother on her guitar. From there he advanced on his own, becoming a nuisance in their house in Saika Estate in Nairobi’s Eastlands. His father didn’t find the guitar-plucking amusing, especially when he wanted to listen to the news on radio. After high school he worked as a construction worker to fend for himself. Meanwhile he mastered his guitar, volunteering to teach kids music at the neighboring Soweto slums. He continued offering private guitar lessons even after joining the University of Nairobi, where he is studying International Relations and Diplomacy. His first break in professional music was at the 2008 edition of Spotlight on Kenyan Music, where he represented Nairobi with his song ‘Jawabu’, which features on the compilation album. Other than the guitar he also plays the drums and the chivoti.
During gigs he is backed by the three-girl group, Karama. Tetu accompanies him on the djembe and Andrew Ngatia on bass. His music is a fusion of the Afro beat and traditional Kenyan sounds with modern music styles like contemporary Jazz, soul, folk, house, pop etc. His message mainly focuses daily life experiences, fun, patriotism, Godliness, peaceful coexistence, love and such like virtues among other factors relevant to today’s age and time. Fadhilee’s set is very unique, he plays the acoustic guitar, the Adeudeu, a traditional Kenyan bow harp accompanied by a bassist and a djembe fola (percussionist). DJ MANTIXX deejaymantixx deejay.mantixx deejaymantixx1 MY REAL NAME IS: Barnabas Otieno I GOT MY STAGE NAME FROM: a friend who was also helping me on my art. I USUALLY PLAY: everything. I PREFER TO PLAY: what the crowd wants. I don’t choose where show case and entertain with my craft I have also done it inside a church and people loved it even more. I GOT INTO DEEJAYING: 12 years ago and still going on strong. I LEARNT DEEJAYING: since it was a passion and I always dreamt of entertaining audience. I love it and also my school friends has ever believed it’s me because when I was in school I was a different person so humble, quit and a man of few words. MY MAJOR CHALLENGE WHEN STARTING OUT: were the hardest times you could ever wish for! First, my parents didn’t like anything about music, and then there were very few DJ Academies. I think there was only Homeboyz and the price was not pocket friendly and my parents didn’t imagine taking me to DJ School. I could go for a gig and be like the fans because you wouldn’t get close enough to the stage see what’s going on. MY MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: as at now I have achieved a lot with my career. I have a DJ Academy, recording studio, video cameras & shoot. IF I WASN’T A DEEJAY I’D BE: a soldier to protect my country and also correct the law breakers. *OUFSWJFX CZ /KFSJ ,JNBOJ t 1IPUPT GSPN %+ .BOUJYY

Nyekx, who is more determined than ever to see his newly formed band Afrikan Roots make it to the very top of the local music scenes.
The courageous story of Afrikan Roots began in 2009 when the group’s founding member Kenneth “Nyekx Manyemula decided to form his very first house music band known as Black boys, this later changed to Black Motion. The group was contracted by (Sheer Music); they have since parted ways before they hit the big mark in the local music scenes in 2011 with the hit song, "Set Me Free". Black motion is now left with two of its original members. Although the break up may have dashed the immediate dreams of the other members of the band who were left out, it did little to stop the aspirations of its founder, 4UPSZ CZ /KFSJ ,JNBOJ t 1IPUPT "GSJDBO 3PPUT
The group now comprises of Kenneth Mayemula (Nyekx), Katlego Mabasa (DJ Maspila), Musa Mmotsa (DJ Mosco) and Mercedes Boshego. The talented five have let go of the past obstacles and are moving forward in a way many of their peers will admire. They are creating hit after hit and are gaining so much popularity. They recently were in Nairobi and Performed at ONGEA! 2018 and UBANTU. Afrikanroots1 afrikanrootssa01 @Afrikanroots1
