SWIGA

Pb:What’s your name? S: Swiga is my stage name. My official name is Martina Swiga. Pb:When did you realize that you had a passion for music and wanted to make it your Career? S: I have always enjoyed singing since I was a little girl. Whenever I fantasized about my future, I saw myself as a Rock star and, because you cannot tell that to your African parents, I said I’d be a Lawyer. Now I am both! I’m glad that I get to do what I love and I love it. Music for me is an addiction and I’m hooked! Pb:Tell us about your journey as an artist. S: Well it has been a journey indeed. So far I have been blessed and I thank God. I have had some of my best moments in life on a stage full of Adrenaline and absolutely breath-taking. My journey has also met certain challenges that have caused me to grow as an individual and as an artist. Patience has been a virtue I have had to embrace. I have met and collided with beautiful people through my music. Right now, I am not in a rush of any sort and I am at peace with where I am because everything has its perfect timing. Pb:How has your journey at Penya Changed you as an artist? S: Penya has a big marking at the beginning of my journey. It came at the right moment when I felt like I needed a platform to be heard and to discover myself as an artist. It has set a good foundation and it was an amazing experience. I had a lot of fun while at it. Pb:Who inspires you as an artist? S: The power to be able to make my thoughts and emotions known through the music I write or sing is what inspires Me.Different artists inspire me in different ways aswell. All hail Queen BeyBeyoncé, Rihanna, Yemi Alade, Sza, Eryka Badu ,Sauti Sol and Wizkid are but a few. I draw my inspiration from the experiences around me such as love, heartbreak, partying, growing up, changes.

Pb:How would you describe your music? S: My music comprises sounds of Pop, Jazz and Roots. My performances are Energetic, Electric and should be on your to-do list. Pb:How did the Song Slay Queen come about? S: There was this vibe going around about Nairobi Slay Queens and their Lifestyle in trying to put up with current trends in society. I think every woman is a Queen in her own capacity and should define her own slay and not wait for society to do it. Also, there is nothing wrong in being spoilt or spoiling yourself. Embrace it all Pb: Anything new we should watch out for? S: I’m also excited to see how my growth as an artist will take shape. I’m making more music and new music that will even result in better live shows! Pb: Any advice to upcoming artists? S: Don’t be afraid to shine in your own light. Find your own path, master it and lead it! @Swiga_swiga

DJ LERB lerbuliro leroybuliro leroybuliro

My real name is: Leroy Buliro. I got my stage name from: my real name. For the DJs out there, they know the struggle that comes with acquiring a stage name because after that it becomes your brand that defines you. That was too much to think about and all I wanted is to play music. I Studied at: Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. I usually play: Bass music. This varies from Drum and Bass, Dub/Reggae and Jungle (a fusion of reggae and DnB) but if you catch me on my freestyle days you might just get treated to something very special. I got into Deejaying: way back in High School when virtual Dj was life. Since then it’s been a series of evolution to where am at. I learnt Deejaying: through YouTube videos but it was my drive and heart that really took me off. There’s this music store in the CBD that rents out CDJs and they would allow one to practise there. Every weekend I would make my way there just to master that trick that I saw online. Glad to say it worked out well.

It’s Been How Long Since You Got Into Deejaying: Professionally, 3 years after a DJ competition hosted by Bad Mambo where I came in third. Since then it’s been months of underground gigs around Nairobi to Festivals. My major challenge when starting out: was and still is getting the right audience that moves to the Rhythm of my playlist. Bass music isn’t the typical genre you would hear anywhere in Nairobi. It took some resilience and vision to get to where am at as an artist otherwise I could have easily bent a knee and settled with mainstream music. I did not. This I have my friends and crews (Bad Mambo, Umojah Sound System & ADA Creative Studios) to thank, they’ve always been there for the support. My major achievements: happened back in 2016, when I got a slot to perform at my first International Music Festival called Nyege Nyege in Jinja, Uganda. I got to share the stage with the most amazing acts in and out of Africa, all within 3 months after going pro. If I wasn’t a Deejay: I’d probably do whatever Creative thing I fancy, this includes Photography, Painting or Writing.
