Pb: Why Rap? FO: I grew up listening to a lot of Rap Music and it became a part of me. Additionally, my mentors have been Rap Artistes and they have had a big impact on my career. So it slowly grew on me. Pb: Where do you get your inspiration from? FO: My inspiration comes from what I am feeling, what I am going through or what my surrounding is. Pb: Did you always know that you wanted a career in music? FO: Yes I did. Since High School I knew I wanted to do music but I never thought I would break through so fast. I started rapping when I was 15 years old. Starting out in a big group of young stars who were being taught how to Rap by established Kenyan Rappers called Wenyeji. Pb: If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why? FO: Well, I am not good at singing but I would do Kenyan girl/boy by Necessary Noize and do it with all my heart because I loved that song when I was younger. I know all the lyrics and the breaks on the song. Pb: What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today? FO: I fear being criticized by people.

I also fear that the music I put out may not receive the kind of reaction I had hoped for. With time however, I have come to learn critics will always be there and you can’t make everyone happy. Plus, I have learnt to take the positive criticism and block out the rest. Pb: What would you say is the biggest misconception about you? FO: The biggest misconception is people assume I am rowdy, rude and I diss people for no reason. Pb: How has it working with at Kaka Empire? FO: It has been a great learning experience. I am lucky to be under Kaka Empire because the team makes things possible for me and they make me being an artist easy and seamless. I can concentrate on making music and not worry about anything else. Pb: Where do you see yourself in five years? FO: Well, the sky is the limit. Pb: Last words? FO: To anyone who believed in me and who still believes in me as an artiste, Asante. I appreciate the support and people should be on the lookout for some new projects.

MY REAL NAME IS: Pascal Rota I GOT MY STAGE NAME FROM: my unique style of scratching originally my name was DJ P then I added Skratch to P, Hence Pskratch. I STUDIED AT: Maseno University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Education I USUALLY PLAY: different clubs in different counties I GOT INTO DEEJAYING: Professionally in 2011 when I did an opening act for DJ Kalonje in Maseno University. That is where I became a household name. I LEARNT DEEJAYING: from DJ Joe Mfalme who gave me the basics alongside a gentleman called, Charles Wence and Babz of Underdawg Records. I would walk a long distance from Umoja to Town only to get the basic DJ skills that was in Groove Riders DJ Academy that was at Church House, then on the weekends we would go to Village Market to see what DJ Joe Mfalme, Charles Wence and Babz would do on the Decks then walk back from town. I was tough and rough but I still managed at the end of the day Passion drove me, the rest is history. IT’S BEEN HOW LONG SINCE YOU GOT INTO DEEJAYING: Professionally it's been 7years. MY MAJOR CHALLENGE WHEN STARTING OUT: was that People viewed Deejaying as a very bad profession and that it was for guys who didn't go to school, it was a mountain to change that. As a Deejay getting professional equipment was very difficult because they were expensive and very few in the market and the few guys who had them would not allow anyone to touch. MY MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: was when I hosted Diamond Platinumz & Jalang’o in Kisumu. IF I WASN’T A DEEJAY I’D BE: a Biker, a Gym Instructor or a Lecturer. MY EXPERIENCE AT SAFARICOM TWAWEZA LIVE: was just awesome. Doing charity work during the day and being mentored by KRISS Darlin was awesome experience. I learnt a lot at that time. My brand was elevated to higher heights, learnt about branding, how to connect with the crowd musically and being a professional Deejay and Entertainer. Safaricom Twaweza Live exposed the hidden talents that could not be recognized if there was no a platform they offered. It was well organized and major one thing I learnt was Time is taken seriously. I have now introduced my merchandise to the market branded hoodies those who want to be identified with Pskratch can make orders, I also just opened a Deejay Academy to nurture more talented Deejays like me, let them learn from SKRATCH Interview by Rahab Njeri | Photos courtesy of DJ Skratch

J

uma Mussa, a Tanzanian RnB singer that records under the stage-name Jux was born in 1989 and grew up in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The single was then followed by a number of tracks from Wakacha such as Facebook Gal, here we go and mimi na wewe, with Jux as the group's lead singer.

At the age of 16, Jux started his music career first as a rap singer and later switched to RnB. He has been named one of the most fashionable musicians in East Africa by fashion magazines such as BaabKubwa and Mzuka.

Jux has also released a number of hit singles such as "Napata raha", "Sipati karaha" and "Mwambie yeye". "Uzuri wako" and his latest single "Nitasubiri" produced by Bob Manecky, which is doing well in the music charts; both under the A.M. record label.

In 2008 he joined Cyril Kamikaze and Nigga Flo, of the group 'Wakacha",becoming the vice president of the group. In the end of that year Jux decided to record his first solo track, working with A.M. record label, where he got persuaded to change his Rap style of music and turn to RnB. Under producer Manecky, his first RnB single that goes by the name "Nimedata" was recorded and released that year, which did surprizingly well than he had expected.

So far, Jux has worked with a number of artists such as Kamikaze, Mabeste, Stamina, Vanessa Mdee, M-Rap, Mo Racka and Gosby. Over the years Jux has not only established himself as an Rnb singer but also a fashion icon in the music industry with his fine sense of fashion and swag.
