5 Low motivation
Loss of energy and interest can result in thoughts such as “It’s not worth it”, “I will wait until I feel better” and “I am too tired”. While fatigue can be common in people with depression and PH, it is important to recognise the differences. When you are tired it can be helpful to rest to recover, but in depression, some rest can actually make you feel worse. It can also give you more time to focus on negative thoughts and ruminate. For example, in the scenario earlier, to avoid talking about what was discussed at her doctor’s appointment, Catherine went for a lay-down. But rather than sleeping, she stayed awake going over and over upsetting thoughts in her head.
Can you think of a time when your low motivation has caused you to experience other symptoms of depression?
