REMEMBERING OUR HERITAGE Dr. Martha Haun

I love music – almost all kinds! I am not a formal scholar of music – never took a college course, etc. but I sing for pleasure and play piano and pipe organ and years ago my 120 bass accordion! I gave the accordion to my granddaughters a few years ago when I could no longer lift it for very long.

This has provided exposure to a variety of music and lyrics. I find lyrics fascinating because most tell a story and give us a narrative – long or short – that provides a snapshot in time.

Phi Beta Sweetheart, Phi Beta sweetheart, you’re the dearest girl the Frat world knows, --My tho’ts are winging back to you on ev’ry wind that blows – I’m longing for the day when you will make my dreams come true.

I pledge my life, my love, my heart, my Phi Beta girl to you.

The 2014-2016 Phi Beta Executive Board

In this piece, I want to share a snapshot of our early Phi Beta sisters back in 1938! No men were allowed in those days!! [Their loss!!] The lyrics below are from the Songs of Phi Beta – first published in 1938 – Helen M. Eastes, Editor.

These were good days when these songs were written. Although there was war in Europe, the United States did not enter World War II until December 1941 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7.

When Tau chapter still existed at Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO, those Phi Betas did the long version of the initiation and sang the appropriate songs. It was very impressive but beyond the talents of many of our collegiates! They kindly performed the ceremony for me when I attended the 50th anniversary of their chapter!

Today Phi Beta is professional and thus we have dropped many of the social traditions reflected by these songs. However, like listening to the stories of our grandparents, these songs help us understand our roots, and perhaps emotions that we still feel, even if we don’t walk around singing about them!

A Good Time was had by All on Sunday, February 22nd!

We (friends from 4 groups hostess Anne belongs to) were treated to the sound of an Italian harpsichord played with great skill by Gilbert Martinez, Director of Music Sources, Berkeley. Music Sources, Center for Historically Informed Performance, Inc. (http://www.musicsources.org), is a collection of early keyboard instruments for special concerts, and Gilbert is not only the director but is also a rising young Early Music star in Europe. We heard music from Renaissance Britain, from 17th Century Italy, and from 18th Century France. THE ROOM HAD GREAT ACCOUSTICS FOR IT ALL! The room was Edith Bergstrom's art studio in Atherton, California, where she specializes in painting special views of palm trees. The studio looks lovely for a concert and seats 50-60 comfortably. So, we welcomed a good assortment of Anne's friends from several groups she is in and met after the music to chat over coffee and Madelines (an 18th Century treat).

With the great playing and good company, Anne, and some of her friends, thought we should start a chamber series featuring harpsichord next year after Christmas...

Our dear hostess, Edith, says she's willing. We will have lots to learn and to give, too.

Gilbert Martinez attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Laurette Goldberg. He was also her teaching assistant in the baroque studies program at this institution. He has participated in master classes in USA and in Europe with Kenneth Gilbert, Ton Koopman, Davitt Moroney, and Colin Tilney, among others. He also studied with Alan Curtis in Italy. As a performer, he has appeared with several ensembles and soloists of great distinction, including the Artaria Quartett, Musica Angelica, The Whole Noyse, soprano Judith Nelson, mezzo soprano Fredericka von Stade, countertenor Brian Asawa, gambist Juan Manuel Quintana, Les Idées Heureuses of Montréal, and Philharmonia Baroque.

He has been a finalist in several competitions and was a prizewinner in the Concours International de Clavecin Bach, held in Montréal. More recent 4 endeavors include teaching a wide variety of students here and in Southern California. In addition he has co-produced several large scale performances of Gluck, Albinoni and Handel with City Concert Opera, SF. (Bella loves fine china… good taste! She loves music too.)

Continued from page 1 ~ Violet and Gold (additional photos on pages 7 & 8 ) After some support, explanations, and open-mindedness on my part, I pledged Phi Chapter of Phi Beta Fraternity. This wonderful group of individuals, beautiful inside and out, were a part of an organization with ideals that I had held dear on my own: arts, service, and self-improvement. This magnificent organization was a turning point for me. By the end of my first year at Capital University, I had found my home.

Over the four years I spent with Phi beta, I held three chairs, created an executive position, acted as Executive Historian as well as President, participated in three bylaw changes (one of which was Nationals bylaws), and represented my chapter at National Convention where I accepted the Colligate Project Award on their behalf, and personally received the Collegiate Scholarship Award. I have been very fortunate in this organization, and I appreciate all of the achievements, honors, and teachings I have been gifted. It is honestly thanks to this organization I have become the person that I am today.

As I graduate Capital University and move to another state for graduate school, I pause to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. This organization has been a blessing in so many ways. From the laughs at social events to the tears at retreat, I have grown immensely. Thank you to the National Executive board for the encouragement and advice that I so desperately needed. Thank you to the delightful individuals I met at National Convention. If I can achieve at least half of things you have done with your confidence and love for the arts, I will lead a fulfilled life. To my chapter, I leave a piece of my heart with you when I go.

I cried at our last chapter meeting. Correction—I sobbed to be completely honest. I admit my fears for myself, but also share my courage that this organization provides me. I can be the person I want to be, dancing and singing as I go. I can look back at my past, which we all have, and admit that I will have a brighter future. Phi Beta is an absolutely loving and accepting family to me. They completed a walk to find a cure for diabetes for me in honor of my father; we did other similar things for other members. When I fell, they picked me up, brushed me off, and walked me back to confidence. I love Phi Beta with every ounce of my being, and I am honored to be graduating with the other seniors who share the same passion and admiration as I do for this Fraternity. Phi Beta is my family that I’ll return to as I grow older, and I know it’ll always be with open arms.

Thank you all for everything. Revel in the little things Phi Beta does for you and the way it makes you feel. We have incredible values and a powerful love for the arts. I am finally happy with myself, my life, and past and future because I live by the motto, “to be rather than to seem to be.” Although I can only speak personally, I know that I am not alone in this love for Phi Beta as we, the seniors of Phi Chapter graduate.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Long-time Phi Beta friends publish together Dr. Martha Haun, currently National Parliamentarian of Phi Beta and past National President, and Dr. Robin Nicklin Williamson, former president of Lambda Chapter at Southern California University have published together again! The two women have been friends for more than thirty years since Robin was a graduate student at U of Wisconsin and teaching part-time at U of Houston. Martha had so many communication theory students that Robin was hired to teach the class too.

They have been good friends since and have published more than a dozen articles together in the Parliamentary Journal, the scholarly publication of the American Institute of Parliamentarians. Haun has more than two dozen articles total.

The second half of the new book Managing Meetings Effectively reprints most of their journal articles addressing a variety of parliamentary issues that presiding officers, parliamentarians, convention coordinators, and organizations in general face. The first half of the book addresses the role of the meeting planner, the officers of an organization and the wide variety of roles that a president/presiding officer usually fills. It has one guest chapter by Dennis Clark, a retired public school history teacher and current president of the Texas State Association of Parliamentarians.

When I was national president back in the early eighties, Jim (an incredible ventriloquist) was a college student and came to the Phi Beta convention --in Portland – I think. He was the student rep from the chapter in Minneapolis. We got program board funding at UH and brought him to campus for a program here. I remember his program on Diana Ross and the Supremes! CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS Pi Alpha Mu Alumnae Pi Eta Chapter hosted Pi Alpha Mu (Cincinnati) celebrated Valentine’s Day at the Cincinnati Woman’s Club with a luncheon, program and silent auction. A selection of Broadway show tunes and popular music was performed by Helen Raymond-Goers and Will Reed (pictured) and accompanied by PAM member Terrie Benjamin.

Following up on last year’s success, a silent auction featured seven fancy themed baskets donated by members of the Board, including a Children’s Dance Basket (pictured), Time for Tea (pictured), Gourmet Food and Wine, Aromatherapy, Gardener’s Delight, a large stuffed rabbit and basket, and Shell Seekers.

Seven of our lucky members went home with their goodies and our treasury grew by $260. Marion Cooley is the proud new owner of Sir Peter Wimsey (pictured).

Artist Deirdre Dyson

of Pi Alpha Mu recently opened an exhibition of her locally inspired paintings and others from her travels at Gallery 42 Fine Arts, in Mason, Ohio. Deirdre is a landscape artist from Loveland, Ohio, who paints outdoors, locally and internationally, practicing the French painting technique "en plain air," or painting outdoors. She grew up in England,

inspired by the late 19th century American expatriate painter, John Singer Sargent.

She and her husband raised three children and she taught art at Loveland High School; since retiring, she travels throughout the year, especially to Santa Fe and the West. Deirdre regularly exhibits her work in the greater Cincinnati area, including a recent show at the Xavier University Art Gallery. She was recently featured in a story about her work in The Cincinnati Enquirer (2-12-15).

Pi Alpha Sigma To Rehearse or Not to Rehearse We are in the midst of putting an addition onto our home. Two existing walls have been cut through. Plaster dust is

everywhere, and boxes of stuff are piled high! This week, I must finish researching the contents of the tile store, wallpaper store, carpet barn and lighting shack. Our three kids will (still) need rides to swimming classes, ballet lessons, and Girl Scouts meetings. But despite this unfortunate onslaught of activity, I had just committed my “free time” to yet another concert season of singing in a chorus--a commitment which was accompanied by at least a thousand rehearsals! But why?

The other evening, while driving across town to watch my college-aged godchild perform in a community theater production of Dames at Sea, I was, admittedly, wrestling with my decision. How could I POSSIBLY consider taking on such a heavy rehearsal schedule with our house in total uproar? Somewhat distracted, I entered the theater, found my seat, and flipped through the program. On the inside cover, I spotted a letter from the director of the musical to its audiences: I’ve always thought of performing as almost a calling. It can’t be explained to a person who doesn’t share the passion with you. What they just don’t get is your trying to tell you them how good you feel even though you are giving up a lot of free time to volunteer to do a show. In Community Theater, you spend time with other slightly looney people who love what you love. They get it. These people become your extended family. You spend so much time together; you live in each other’s pockets. When the show is over, you miss them. When you see them in other productions, you feel proud of them. Something very special is shared by people who fulfill a dream together. I guess there is really no way to explain this phenomenon fully. Know that most of us don’t do this for the applause or to get our picture in the News Sun. We do this because we Continued on Page 11 10

need to. So the next time your wife, son, husband or daughter misses dinner because of a rehearsal, don’t throw your hands up in the air and say, I just don’t get it! Instead, toss them an apple and hand them a sandwich for the road. Give them a kiss good-bye, and thank the powers that be that you are lucky to know someone who is crazy enough to have an unselfish need to share his talents with the world. Trust me on this . . .

Nodding in agreement, I gazed up at the brightly lit stage to see my godchild heroically hoofing her way through Dames’ opening tap number. Her body was limber; her face, beaming. I smiled broadly, not only noting her obvious talent, but her incredibly infectious enthusiasm. Why commit to performing?

The bug can be caught when one is quite young.

(Last winter, my children were totally enthralled by the lights, sounds, order and professionalism they had experienced while performing in Cleveland Ballet’s Nutcracker.) Live performance! It can seep into your blood like nothing else can. You can rehearse ’til you drop, for little or no pay, knowing that the true reward transcends finance, food, or even rest. Choose to rehearse? Perhaps performers have sterner stuff running though their veins! (I’ve always thought I could literally die singing in a performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony and feel none the less inconvenienced!) Theory: if you give only your best in rehearsal and performance, that best will not only reach your audience, but will be returned to family, friends, and yes . . . to you, the performer Ann Marie Hardulak President, Pi Alpha Sigma Chapter, Cleveland Article originally published in THE BATON, Fall-Winter 1995.
