Carrier Command: Gaea Mission A classy remake of a classic Spectrum/C64 title from 1988, Carrier Command brings the original gamechanging concept up to date. You take command of a futuristic aircraft carrier on a mission to capture islands, using the resources and strategic properties of each to build your force of customisable amphibious Walrus vehicles and airborne Manta attack craft. The genius is its total integration of first-person shooter and strategic skirmish battle play, set between two huge campaign modes. While single-player, this is a dynamic undertaking, an interweaving of Halo and Command & Conquer into something totally unique. Phil Dudman

F1 Race Stars Whoever thought mashing up the best bits of Mario Kart with the real world of Formula 1 racing would be the bog’s dollocks was absolutely right. So welcome to F1 Race Stars, featuring the entire cast of F1 drivers and outrageous themepark style versions of circuits from Spa to Monaco. Yes, it’s time to reach for Hamilton’s helmet and put your pedal to the Vettel for the ultimate in fastpaced fun as you hit pit lanes, collect power-ups, cast wet weather clouds on your multiplayer opponents and sling-shot into the lead with a KERS boost-up. This one’s on pole. Phil Dudman

Resident Evil 6 Hold on to your holsters, because Resident Evil is back for another epic horror show. With graphically intense live action, new characters join Leon and Chris to face a new outbreak of the virulent C-virus across a narrative that moves from the US to Eastern Europe and China. Kicking off with a zombieinfected US President, mysterious agents and the resurgent threat of the Neo-Umbrella Corp, stories are interwoven on a cinematic level, with new crossover action letting up to four players experience the horror together online with an evolved control system and some awesome new vehicles. Smart As (Vita) If caffeine alone doesn’t stir your grey matter in the morning, it’s time to take your brain to the gym. And with Sony’s Smart As on the Vita, undergoing a daily schedule of intuitive and reaction-based exercises, will beef up your noggin in no time. Split across four categories – logic, arithmetic, language and observation – this quickly becomes addictive as you engage both touchscreens, draw missing letters, do maths and join dots to build up scores and compete with friends via online leader boards and Facebook integration. A first-time effort implying I’m only 31% logical suggests it’s very accurate, too. Phil Dudman
