WORLD-CLASS CLUBBING Zouk, Singapore Since opening its doors in March 1991, six months before London’s Ministry of Sound, Zouk has grown into one of the most exciting clubs on the planet. ‘Zouk’ – meaning ‘village party’ in Creole – was the brainchild of owner Lincoln Cheng, set on sharing his discovery of the US and European club scene of the late 80s with the people of Singapore. Built within three restored 1919 warehouses on the banks of the Singapore River, the complex now boasts five unique rooms: the Velvet Underground (comprising the Lounge and Dance rooms) with its own exclusive entrance and original Andy Warhol artworks; Phuture (their hip hop haven) complete with its futuristic design and LED wall; plus the alfresco Wine Bar and the Gaudi-inspired, Moorish multilevel main room of Zouk itself; all open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Zouk’s motto has always read: ‘One World, One Music, One Tribe, One Dance’: aiming to unite people

from all walks of life through music. By welcoming the world’s greatest artists to play alongside a family of residents (djB, Eclipse, Ghetto, Hong, Jeremy Boon, Ming, Adrian Wee and Elvin), Zouk has left the likes of Sasha, Oakenfold and Dubfire bursting with praise. Equipped with a custom made Gary Stewart soundsystem and insane laser, LEDs and lighting systems, the club guarantees an exhilarating experience every time. And then there’s ZoukOut, conceived by the club in 2000 to be the region’s largest outdoor dance music festival. Applauded by Erol Alkan as “legendary - the one event everyone talks about”, for the first time ever ZoukOut 2012 (6-8 Dec), will become a two-day event hosting Above & Beyond, Hardwell, Kaskade, Major Lazer, Porter Robinson, Calvin Harris, A-Trak and Paul van Dyk. But when it comes to pushing the boundaries of global clubbing culture, with Zouk, we expect nothing else. Phil Dudman
