housing Muri, Switzerland 10’000 m2 under construction
participation • project lead • development of design, volume, ground plans, facades • dealing with municipal authoroties • legal counselling
The project site is located near the famous monastery of Muri, in Switzerland. The area adjacent to the building plot consists mainly of one family houses in a densely vegetated surrounding. Situated on top of a small rise there is a splendid view of the monastery, a couple of hundred meters away. Our goal was to create living apartments with an affirmative statement towards the policy of denser building in Switzerland and at the same time retain as much of the green feel of the area as possible. A main focus point lay in the incorporation of our volumes into the surroundings, without overpowering the existing, much smaller houses. Our strategy consisted of breaking the volumes up into smaller units, which than had the ability to respond to their surroundings in terms of size and placement. Thus we were able to create a site with various different feels to it. A curved walkway leads up to the buildings from the street. The curve accentuates the placement of the volumes, which are set back from each other. This creates an in-between area with meeting points and playgrounds. Furthermore the setback makes both buildings clearly visible from the street, allowing for a well defined entrance situation. This clarity is underlined by the sculptural volumetry of the buildings. Towards the south the buildings and apartments open up into the green and the splendid view.
Monastery
N
1. The surrounding area of the project site. One family homes, lots of trees and a superb view of the monastery. A highly frequented road runs to the south.
2. New building policy allows for an increased density. Placed volume shows possible dimensions.
3. Seperating and displacing the volumes, as a first integration step into the surroundings. Also the scenery is able to flow through the site.
4. Reduktion of height and set backs in the volumes as a reaction to the imediate surroundings.
5. Adding mass in specific places binds the volumes together and imparts them with a clear appearance.
6. Finished layout and adaptation to the surrounding scale.

Above picture shows the famus monastery in Muri. It is located north-west of our site in easy walking distance. It is itself the center of the town but with its many different facades, settings of volumes and surrounding green, it retains the feel of leisure and quiet that is constituting to its aura. 0 15.4 0 17.0

The lower two pictures are an example of the fauna that is found in the area. The whole town of Muri is defined by the abundance of vegetation and we wanted to hold on to that, even though we are introducing a much denser volume into the neighbourhood. 6 13.8

floor plan
interior view - living room
One of the earlier ideas in the development of the floorplans was the use of a loggia-balcony. It was situated opposite the entrance and the kitchen and was intended to be a central hub of the apartment. Fully opened it would drastically expand the usable living space.
2. 119 m2
1. 112 m2 ground floor
4. 119 m2
4. 125 m2 first floor
5. 129 m2 rooftop apartment
On a narrow plot the floorplans had to be elongated in order to fit two volumes next to each other and still have the benefits of south orientation, the superb view and a huge outdoor space in each apartment. Each apartment is equipped with an open kitchen, enlarging the living room and dining area, totalling to around 50 m2. All the bedrooms are at least 14 m2, many even larger. All the balconies are south oriented and overlook the big garden area. Two bathrooms and a rĂŠduit top off the fittings of the apartments, all of wich are suitable for disabled people. The interior is made out of wooden parquet floors in the living areas with plate flooring for bathrooms and kitchen. Each apartment is supplemented with a storage room in the basement, including a washing machine.

typology: location: situation:
hotel - restaurant - concert hall / conference rooms Muri, Switzerland design study
participation • project lead • development of design, volume, ground plans, facades • dealing with municipal authoroties • legal counselling
A near to 300 years old restaurant and hotel, in the center of the town of Muri, will be renewed and enlarged. The aim being of establishing a gastronomical hotspot for the entire region. To meet those terms we plan to save the appearance and volume of the original restaurant by getting rid of later add-ons and placing a new volume in the “backyard” of the existing building. This gives us the needed volume for the ambitious project of our client and at the same allows us to clarify the volumetric situation of the town center. In the new volume, we take a lot of the elements which constitute the essence of the old and rather famous restaurant and try to translate those into modern language. At the same time we remain conscious of the surroundings and react with our volume to the different densities, trying to act as a mediator to decrease the harshness of the jump in urban scale. The In-between area is made up of a one story building in which the new restaurant will be located. This serves as a link between the old and the new buildings, without competing with either volumetrically. In addition we achieve a certain flexibility of how to introduce a new entrance situation, which at the same time has to function as a mediating element between the many different functions. There will be a new concert hall / conference rooms, a total of 36 hotel rooms and a new restaurant, complimenting the old one, with ambitious plans for the future.
N
1. Blue is the existing restaurant, while red is a later addition. This will be replaced to clear up the situation. Orange is another old building. lacking a sound structure but with good urban placement.
2. The complimentary building of the hotel will take up the space of the orange building. We achieve spacial continuity while also defining it further and without rivaling the restaurant.
3. The hotel is adjusted to achieve a clean transition with the surrounding volumes. In order to create an ensemble we introduce an intermediary volume.
4. The finished layout will bring a density of live to the area while also defining the urban and spacial situation.

The hotel consists out of individual, prefabricated wooden boxes that are the hotel rooms. This way the actual buiding process will take up the least amount of time, which can be invested in the further detailing of the design.

urban collage
typology: location: situation:
city casas - housing Schwammendingen, Zürich design course ETH Zürich
participation • project development in association with Joe Liao at ETH Zürich • strong focus on urban planning and visualisation through physical models
A building plot of approximately 250 m length was to be developped with the focus on increasing the built density. The technique we used could be called “urban collage”. We implemented the footprint of an existing typology of a city casa, the Palazzina de`Salvi, in order to reach a high level of design density in as short an amount of time as possible. Our goals where to increase the density but at the same time retain the human scale. We wanted to create a setting where one encounters new and exiting situations, depending on how one moves through the area. Based on the book “Collage City” by Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter we wanted to focus equally on the living spaces and the public spaces, as we share their belief, that the “mystery of what is beyond” brings more life to the city. We where fascinated with the idea that the city can hold so much more than is visible on the first glimpse. Therefore our buildings are clustered in a way to allow the space to flow around them, densifying and opening in a interchanging pattern of built and negativ space. Introducing a high density of built space, we wanted to avoid creating a oppressing environment. Building facades are formed and placed in a way to be abe to guide the pedestrians and also give the interior spaces as much light as possible. Furthermore we aimed at creating a window type that allowed for close proximity of buildings without opening the apartments to direct insights.
