The bunker project is an opportunity to repurpose ‘De Bunker’, a derelict community & student centre designed by Hugh Maaskant. The key to preserving the building while also keeping it lively was to add new programme. Mixed-use functions like a restaurant and working spaces would be introduced in the existing building, complemented with a residential high-rise in its middle. The design aims at a continuation of De Bunker’s distinguishing traits, gradually transforming the modernist low-rise volume into a contemporary high-rise. The specific shape of its footprint aims at integrating the tower in its multifaceted surroundings, rooting it in a low-rise neighbourhood and simultaneously marking an entrance point to the city.

Powerhouse Company Housing | retail | office Eindhoven | The Netherlands Competition | 1. price
‘To live, to meet and to stay in an environment that is fitting for a city like Eindhoven, where the pioneering spirit and the experimental are celebrated’ - that is the atmosphere in which the design was realised In addition to becoming the new entry point to the city at the railway station, there will be an extensive, dynamic landscape of retail spaces, workshops, meeting & showcase areas, restaurants & office spaces. The towers themselves growing out of open plinths each facilitate a 360° sky lobby, making the vertical in addition to the base of the tallest buildings in Eindhoven accessible to the public. With the tallest tower soaring to a 165m height, the trio will transform the skyline quite a bit. Steps in the towers, as well as the volumes themselves will maintain the integration in the surroundings and continue the tradition of fine scaling in the city of Eindhoven.

Powerhouse Company Office | meeting | restaurant Amsterdam | The Netherlands Competition | 1. price
Winning the competition for the entrance hall of Loyens & Loeff’s new HQ in Amsterdam led to the follow up assignment of designing the entirety of their available spaces in the ‘hourglass’ building by Dam & Partners. Next to the development of office floor concepts this included a meeting centre, an entrance hall with a multi-story atrium and a vast restaurant area. Ranging over eight stories, the development of a suitable work environment for the office floors made up the main focus of our design process, all the while refining the other design tasks, gradually finding the atmosphere which will embody what Loyens & Loeff stands for as a company.

Up to date the various departments of Austrians internal affairs ministry exist as Sicherheitszentrum Tirol / 2. Stufe Sicherheitszentrum Tirol / 2. Stufe isolated clusters in the city of Innsbruck. A total of fourteen separate departments are now being organized in one building complex. We chose to give our project a symbolic element by having the volumes form two interlocking links of a chain, strengthened at the centre through a higher element, portraying the virtues of strength, integrity and cooperation. The connecting link serves as a central hub, connecting the different departments. A clearly defined rhythm in the street wards facade portraits a calm authority in front of which life of the city unfolds, undisturbed. The more playful inner volume acts as a counterpoint, focusing the ensemble on itself. It is the meeting point where the departments are interacting, which will be perceivable in the atrium at its core. BMI/DSE EKO Cobra EE 3-4 Büro 2_1_00_12 25 m2

Peter F. Oswald Architekten Housing Muri | AG | Switzerland Completed
2011 the zoning laws in Switzerland changed. A small town consisting mainly out of low density one-family homes is suddenly confronted with a possible increase in the built density by nearly three times. The plot we had the opportunity to work on was roughly four times the size as its surroundings. In effect the possible new mass was roughly twelve times larger, dwarfing even the large adjoining villas. Understanding the possible friction this crass jump in scale could cause we invested a great amount of time in finding a balance between making a strong individual architecture and letting the new buildings react very specifically to its surroundings. Displacements and altering densities in the volumes function as a gradient to the increased density and interweave the new buildings with the green landscape. The result is a play of volumes relating to the existing structures, noticeably larger but never alienating them.

Peter F. Oswald Architekten Hotel | meeting | restaurant Muri | AG | Switzerland Sketch Design
An existing, nearly 800 year old hotel/ restaurant in the heart of the well known monastery town was to be refurbished. In this process an extension of the restaurant, the hotel and a new meeting centre where to be included in the overall design. Strict regulations for the preservation of the core town picture had to be considered. In accordance with the volumetric language we placed a second volume housing the hotel & meeting centre opposite the existing restaurant/hotel, completing the block in the townscape. In between old and new we create a place to meet for the town and a linking element for the project, housing an entrance hall, a restaurant and a rooftop terrace.

The good thing about having an artist as client is that, if familiar with your work, you get a highly enthusiastic partner, very involved and at the same time leaving a high degree of freedom to your professional judgement. An existing single-family home and an atelier where to be redefined in two separate volumes, allowing for an increase to a total of six apartments. Preserving most of the open green space of the plot we pushed the multi-family home to the utmost edge of the plot, giving it unparalleled view over the town. This allowed for the private atelier/residence of our client, although quite a bit smaller, to be the expressive statement on the site, that he loved so much.

AIRPORT DUEBENDORF • • • •
Master in City Design Prof. Marc Angelil Duebendorf | ZH | Switzerland Design - repurposing airport
Zürich as a city is the heart of the entire metropolitan region of northern Switzerland. As such an expanding pressure is weighing on the city, which has been steadily growing over the last years, at a rate of several thousand apartments a year. In the past this has been happening mainly on the outskirts, increasing the sprawl without adding much to the overall density of the city structure. In this situation, an old military airfield is becoming available for re purposing. My approach at the cities future development was to propose to utilise the space as a new recreation space. This would contribute to a densification of the city while also keeping the huge plot open for future adaptation. Specifically my proposal was to restore the landscape to its ‘natural’ state, before being used as an airfield. The border to the city was to be populated witch an expansion of the ETH and a multitude of ‘HORECA’ spaces.
