A word from Seattle Met Style Editor, Laura Cassidy Ask any up and coming fashion designer what they need most and they’ll all tell you the same thing: money. But spend a little more time with them and you’ll find that the smart ones are also hungry for insiders’ takes on talking to buyers, modern manufacturing, runway styling, show production, and more. The brilliance of The Bellevue Collection’s Independent Designer Runway Show is that it goes further than awarding a cash prize. The panel and I meet with the IDRS designers individually and as a group on multiple occasions over a period of several months to provide mentorship, expertise, and guidance. At the end of this adventure, and after the culminating fashion show, we all know a lot about each other— and that community-building journey has lasting impact not just on the winner, but on all the contestants, and on the style and fashion scene in general.

About Claire “Kim’s passion in this field led her to obtain a BA in Fashion Design from Hansung University in Korea. When San Francisco became her home in 2008, she had already established herself as a knitwear designer. She completed an MA in Fashion Knitwear Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, enabling her to apply a design philosophy and refine her tastes for choice colors and yarns. Having worked with all yarns imaginable in both machine and hand knitting techniques, Kim unites simplicity and technical complexity in her garments.” —Claire Kim

Lastwear
by Rowan Rhys
COURTESY ROWAN RHYS
About Rowan “I was born in South Wales and actually grew up living in what had been a woolen textile mill during the industrial revolution. I moved to Seattle at 19 with thoughts of becoming a professional snowboarder, but after re-evaluating that idea, I decided that pursuing a career in fashion was the natural alternative. I’ve been working in the industry since 2005. In 2007, Lastwear was founded, and in 2010 it became my full-time career. This new line for Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection is something of a departure from Lastwear’s current style and reflects a more personal vision for me.” —Rowan Rhys
I love designing things that inspire narratives in people, clothes that call for a story.

About Heather “Heather Blanchard began her fashion career over a decade ago in retail. She started her own line two years ago because she wasn’t finding what she wanted in the market and had ideas of making everyday staple pieces more exciting. Growing up in Seattle has helped create her dark aesthetic message, an interpretation of her alternative roots with a nod to mystery. Her garments are artfully tailored with attention to subtle details, sophistication, and craftsmanship. Her latest collection evokes a mood that merges an element of edginess and enchantment that is impossible to ignore.” —Heather Blanchard

COURTESY TRINA PIERRE
About Trina “Growing up in Washington State, graduating from Parsons and then living in Paris, New York and LA, Trina was inspired by the current trends as well as the unexpected climates and circumstances that life brings. The clothing with beautiful materials and the ability to move that she donned as an acrobat with Cirque du Soleil and as a professional figure skater inspired a need for a duality between beauty and comfort. Now, as an active mother of two, Trina understands the desire every woman has for comfortable and sophisticated clothing that allows self expression while still maintaining a high level of usability.” —Trina Pierre
