State of the Academy: Wellness
Students Greatest Source of Pressure Remains their Own Expectations By STAFF REPORT
Students responded to issues of self-harm and eating disorders on campus while reflecting on their wellness in the State of the Academy. More students reported feeling pressure from their parents rather than their friends this year in comparison to last year. In 2010, around 16 percent of students reported feeling pressure from their friends, compared to 4.7 percent this year. Students said they felt the greatest source of pressure from themselves. Seventy-two percent of students found their own expectations to be their greatest source of pressure, compared to around 50percent last year. Fewer students found their primary sources of academic pressure from their teachers compared to last year. Last year,
around 12 percent of students responded that they felt pressure from their teachers. This year 3.4 percent of students felt their greatest source of pressure came from their teachers. In a difficult or stressful situation, most students reported they would turn to their friends. Fifty-two percent of students answered that they would seek advice from their friends or peers. Last year, a little less than 50 percent of students reported that they would first seek advice from their friends. Compared to last year, when 40 percent of students reported they would first seek advice from their parents, less students said they would seek advice parents this year. Of the students who participated in the survey, 32.2 percent said they would seek advice from their parents first. More students felt they would talk to their house counselors if they had an issue last year, than this year. Last year, 7 percent
of individuals said they would talk to their house counselors if they had an issue, compared to 4 percent this year. Students also responded to their experiences with perceptions of self-harm on campus. At 88.4percent, the majority of students reported they had not harmed themselves. A slight majority of students, 54.8 percent, reported that they knew of someone who had engaged in self-harm. Student responses regarding eating disorders on campus followed a similar pattern. Though the majority of students reported they had not personally dealt with an eating disorder, a majority also reported knowledge about individuals with eating disorders. Eighty-nine percent of students said they did not have an eating disorder, while 55.3 percent said that they knew of individuals with eating disorders.
