Despite increased alcohol and drug consumption on campus, the percentage of students who respondents predicted have consumed illegal substances on campus decreased. Most students last year speculated that 25 to 50 percent of students had used these substances, compared to a majority predicting 10 to 25 percent this year. The percentage of students who have consumed alcohol increased from 53 percent to 56 percent since last year, with the largest jump coming in those who have consumed alcohol exclusively off campus, an increase of ten percentage points. The percentage of students who have smoked marijuana remained close to last year’s at 27 percent. Twelve percent of students have used hallucinogens, narcotics or hard drugs. Those that use these substances more frequently use them on and off campus than off campus exclusively, at 8 percent and 4 percent respectively. Last year 4.5 percent of students had used hard drugs or narcotics and 9.3% had used hallucinogens, possibly with some overlap. Eight percent of students have used study drugs compared to 7.4% last year. Of students who have attended a school-sponsored event under the influence of drugs or alcohol, 60 students have done so repeatedly compared

20

to 42 who have done so just once. The total percentage of students who have attended events intoxicated increased from three percent last year to 15 percent this year, one of the largest changes the results showed. The percentage of students who have consumed alcohol or smoked marijuana increases by grade. Alcohol consumption increases fairly steadily, whereas marijuana use shows a large jump between lowers and uppers. By senior year, 74.7% of students have consumed alcohol compared to 40.9% who have smoked marijuana, indicating a higher maximum percentage of use. Alcohol consumption quadruples over the four years, whereas marijuana use triples. These factors make the jump in usage between lowers and uppers less significant. More students drink coffee multiple times a day than drink coffee once a day, though nearly half of students never consume coffee. The percentage of students who drink coffee dropped from 50.6 percent to 48.2 percent, so a majority of the student body no longer drinks coffee. Thirty-two percent of students never drink caffeinated beverages, but for those who do, coffee remains the most popular choice followed by tea then Red Bull. Amp became a less popular choice of energy drink.
