A Rivalry 139 Years in the Making
n 1878, a legendary rivalry was born. Red and blue blood mixed when Phillips Academy and Phillips Exeter battled on the football field for ultimate glory. Contrary to popular belief, this was not the first time that the two schools had faced off in athletics. In May of that same year, Andover met Exeter on the baseball field, only to suffer a tough 11–1 loss. Six months later, on a chilly Sunday afternoon, “the Andover eleven” braved weather that “threatened rain” and secured its revenge with a crushing 22–0 victory on the gridiron. This game set the tone for the ensuing 138 years of interscholastic competition. The competition that took place in 1878, however, was only an extension of a familial rivalry of a different kind that had begun 100 years earlier with the founding of Phillips Academy in Andover. In the midst of the American Revolution, 26-year-old Samuel Phillips sought the help of his uncle, John Phillips, to establish a school on Andover Hill; Phillips Academy was founded in 1778. Three years later, the elder Phillips founded Phillips Exeter Academy, 30 miles to the north. Though the schools shared a family name, relations between them were often far from loving and familial. As Frederick S. Allis Jr. once wrote, “There was really no reason for their working together.” Yet, the family linkage between Andover and Exeter was strengthened by the fierce annual athletic competitions. Aside from a short stint in the 1890s when a riot on the Exeter campus cancelled the games for two years, the competitions have endured—through war and peace—as the nation’s oldest prep school rivalry. Over the years, Andover and Exeter have evolved with the changing times. Both campuses became coed in the early 1970s, and sports and fitness options have expanded considerably. Since fall 1973, both boys’ and girls’ teams have competed for victory in multiple sports each year. Throughout a century of change, one thing has endured: the tremendous anticipation and excitement shared by athletes and fans alike. —Upper management, The Phillipian, vol. CXXXIX 3

“A
che te vitu” the trees whisper. A cool autumnal zephyr caresses their brilliant foliage, coaxing the final word of the centuries-old mantra from their lichen-covered branches. “Vitu,” the old oaks creak. “Ache te vitu.” Its syllables waltz through the air, into old brick chimneys and hallowed marble staircases, box-stepping its way into the ears of curious students, continuing an endless dance of ineffable grace. It is a phrase that is burned into our eyelids, reminding us of our suffering as we dream. As the soft embalmer of night dulls our senses, we find ourselves in a dark swamp. Warm water seeps through the fabric of our shoes. The air is hot, and thick with the foul stench of sulfur. Black grass coils at our feet, wrapping its hard grip around our necks until we cannot breathe. We thrash and cry, but only silent air escapes our lungs, never to return. The struggle continues until we begin to accept our decomposing fate. In the struggle, we have forgotten the words of our predecessors. But now, as the swamp consumes every inch of our sinful bodies, we remember. We find footholds in rotting logs and old mantras and the love of those close to us, and we pull our bodies up, tearing through the black grass’s embrace. We run from the flailing grass with screaming legs and lungs ablaze. “Ache te vitu,” we say. We wake, free.

ndover cross-country is a team sport with very individual competition. It has one task that is universal: every competitor must run 5,000 meters in the fastest time possible. There are no head starts, no shortcuts, and no excuses. It is just you racing against the man next to you on a New England fall afternoon. Relative to other fall sports, our time spent in competition is short. But it is intense. For the brief races we run, our work is long and arduous. The summer training, the grueling hill workouts, and the ambitious 1,000s on the track are just a few things Andover XC crushes to perform at our best. While we are a team that grinds, we also are a team that likes to have fun. Andover XC doesn’t score touchdowns or kick goals, but that does not stop us from celebrating after a tough workout or cheering on our teammates as they cross the finish line. As a unit, we have our eyes set on Exeter. We were able to pull out a close victory against Exeter last year, but they finished much better than Andover at the NEPSTA championship. This year, with both NEPSTA and A-E matchups at Exeter (unlike the other A-E competitions), the pressure will be on us to perform at our best on back-to-back weeks. The late Macho Man Randy Savage once said, “The cream will rise to the top.” And we plan on doing just that at Exeter. Twice.

P
EAGXC is more than just another team. It’s a family of girls who love to run day in and day out. Whether it’s a hard workout after a long day of classes or a Wednesday recovery run, we always have fun together as a team. From tie-dying T-shirts on the academy lawn to going on 10-mile hikes on free weekends, our team has built a strong bond both in and out of practices. Not only do we share so many great memories together, we support each other every day on and off the trails. In addition to the fun times we have every day, we’ve come a long way in the past five years. In 2012, we placed 12th at Interschols, followed by an 8th place finish in 2013. In 2014 we made a big jump, finishing third, and last year we took home the second place plaque. Our improvement is undoubtedly due to the work ethic we have built steadily over the years, thanks to the dedication and drive of the amazing girls on our team. Now, in the midst of the 2016 season, we are excited to carry our momentum forward and race hard at E/A and Interschols. We plan to bring a lot of energy and a lot of focus into the final two races of the season! —Sarah Brown ’17 & Christine Hu ’17

I
’ve always felt insurmountable pride in the success of girls’ cross-country. But even though we’ve been New England Champions for the last two years, our records or our times don’t define this success: it’s the community fostered within the team. I joined PAXC four years ago, and I am constantly reminded of how wonderful and impactful it has been to be a member of this team. Each day, I spend my time simply running with my teammates. We thrive together, pushing each other in every workout, up every hill, and through every finish. With no lineup or playing time, it’s just each girl, their teammates, and the threemile course ahead. Our team is built on a foundation of inclusivity. Whether you’ve never run in your life or have been running for years, everyone tries just as hard to get better and faster. With each new season, we welcome runners new and old and immediately get to work. My experience on PAXC has been the most rewarding part of my Andover career. I cannot picture my life without these girls, the true wings on my feet. I am unbelievably thankful for my coaches and the girls I’ve run with, from the Class of 2014 all the way through the Class of 2020. I look forward to A-E weekend and the New Englands with complete faith in my team. —Morgan Rooney ’17

T
he 2016 boys’ varsity water polo team is unlike any other team we have had in the past. We had some problems last year, but this year is completely different. Our team is fairly young, with only four seniors; the majority of players are uppers. We have prioritized a strong team bond and selfless water polo. We are always looking to help each other out on defense, and we are constantly searching for the open man. Although there is competition for a starting spot, we know that any player coming off the bench is ready to play his hardest. We take pride in our close connections to one another. Being a fairly small team of only 15 players, we are not only teammates but also friends. Whether in the pool or in the classroom, we support one another in every discipline possible. I think it is safe to say that the best part of everyone’s day is definitely practice. Regardless of the kind of day we are having, coming together with the team relieves all the stress and issues of the day. Once we walk onto the pool deck, any problems are washed away. And if any issues persist, we know that anyone on the team is there to help. For us, the Exeter-Andover game is pretty special. We play Andover once at the beginning of our season, but that game’s outcome doesn’t matter. E/A is always one of the toughest and most exciting games of our season. Not only is it a great chance to play our oldest rivals, but it is also a great opportunity to bring together all we have learned and practiced over the season for one final game. —Liam Oakley ’17

have been very fortunate to be a part of the Andover water polo program for four years. Water polo is a unique sport because it encompasses elements of hockey, soccer, and swimming. It is a very challenging sport because it tests one’s physical strength, endurance, and mental toughness. However, despite the challenges, nothing beats the rewarding feeling of scoring a goal, hearing the roar of a home crowd, and most importantly, being part the team camaraderie. I have experienced many ups and downs, including winning a New England Championship as well as having a season-ending injury. Despite these fluctuations, one thing has always remained constant: the happiness and pride I get from representing Andover both in and out of the pool. So far this season, we are hovering around the .500 mark with a possible chance of making the playoffs. While we have surpassed our win total from last season, I believe that a team’s record is not always the most accurate metric for measuring success. What truly defines a team is how we adapt to overcome challenges and how much we improve overall. With such a young team—just two seniors—there is a lot of potential in this squad. From games and practices, I see some of the younger guys display extraordinary talent, and I have complete faith that our coaching staff will continue to develop them into amazing players. Boys’ water polo does not compete on the fall Andover-Exeter sports day, but we still face Exeter twice a year. These games carry the same passion and enthusiasm as any of the other Andover-Exeter sports matchups. While it is a zealous and historic competition, there is mutual respect. I have been very fortunate to be a part of this storied rivalry.

ANDOVER Girls’ Soccer
Girls’ Soccer
A
s four-year players on Exeter soccer, this team has been central to our high school experience. From even before the start of prep year, Exeter soccer has meant having a community of girls to look up to, to play for, and with whom to share moments of triumph. Growing up on this team has affected us as teammates and as people. On the field, we learned how to communicate with each other and be accountable for our mistakes; off the field, we learned to apply these skills to be better classmates and leaders. For the past four years, Exeter-Andover has been an amazing opportunity to represent our school. As the last game of the season, it means more than just the culmination of our work: it is a chance to step up in front of our peers, to compete, and to demonstrate the commitment we have put toward the team. For some of us, this season is our last. Going into E/A provides us with a chance to reflect on the experience we have had playing as part of the soccer team. For four years, this has meant our enthusiasm for team buddies, our Secret Santa–style psych, our biweekly team dinners, and countless nights spent burning s’mores. More than just ending our season with a win, we are going into this game with the goal of leaving the team with a legacy to carry on. For our underclassmen especially, who will, in only a few years, be in our position, we hope to provide a mentality for them to carry to their future teammates. Lastly, we would like to thank our devoted fans and parents, who braved our freezing games even before we had stands. GO BIG RED! —Daniela Nemirovsky ’17

P
hillips Academy girls’ soccer— GVS—is a unique and special program that we have seen grow and improve during our four years with the team. We embrace our team’s motto, “whatever it takes,” and bring that mindset to every single drill, game, and practice. Coach Joel has ingrained this selfless mentality into our heads from the moment we joined the GVS family, and our commitment to the motto has shown tremendously on the field. Our 2015 results are certainly attributed to the sacrifice and hard work of every player on the team. From the starters to the injured players, everyone is valued and respected equally. Our team chemistry and intrinsic, gritty competitiveness was amazing. Although many talented players have since graduated, our spirit and our support for each other does not waver. The Andover-Exeter matchup never disappoints. Our record for the season is put aside for this game: one of the most challenging, nail-biting NEPSAC competitions. Last year’s matchup with Exeter ended in a 2–2 tie. Although we went up early in the game and scored two goals in the first half, Exeter rose to the challenge and battled back to tie the game. This year, we hope to use last year’s frustrating tie to motivate us to really battle and challenge a growing, experienced Exeter team. We haven’t exactly had the start we would have liked this season, but we are using our losses to drive our motivation in practice and going forward to the next game. We focus on one game at a time, playing the best soccer we can. Our ability to overcome challenges is what we believe will lead us to a successful season. —Antonia Tammaro ’17 & Cassie Chin ’17

irls varsity field hockey is known for our dedication, grit, and close bond as a team. Made up of five seniors, four uppers, nine lowers, and five preps, we’re a relatively young team this year. Our goals as a team this year are to play every game like it’s our last and always leave it all on the field. We may not be a team of Division 1 field hockey players, but we are a team full of hard workers with a lot of heart. We will slither past your defense and when we score a goal it’s as painful as a snake bite. —Bella Edo ’17

P
hillips Academy Field Hockey, better known as PAFH, is more of a family than a team. Our success is propelled by our motto: “Don’t Settle.” This mentality pushes us to work hard every day until the final whistle blows. PAFH symbolizes a relentless mindset of hard work, dedication, and togetherness. After three years of losing in the first round of the playoffs, we avenged those heartbreaking losses by winning the 2015 NEPSAC Class A Championship, the school’s first such win since 1993! The team persevered through triple and quadruple overtimes in the semifinals and finals to capture the long-sought-after championship. An important part of PAFH 2016 is that we know we are not last year’s team. With the addition of five new players, we are a different team. We have the same ultimate goal, but must reach it in our own way as we learn and grow from this year’s experiences. We do not dwell on the past, whether good or bad; we simply use PAFH’s history as motivation. It is clear that PAFH 2016 will create its own legacy. This year, our focus has been on our team’s incredible depth. With skill, enthusiasm, and athleticism, each person plays an equally important role on our team, on and off the field. Our goal is to focus our energy so that we are able to attain all that we know we are capable of. Andover-Exeter is surely the game with the most hype, excitement, and spirit. It’s great to be part of this awesome tradition, and we look forward to the A-E game all season. PAFH 2016 is hoping for another strong performance this year, following wins in 2014 and 2015. We plan to come out as strong as ever against Exeter—sticking together and unwilling to settle. Go Blue! —Beth Krikorian ’17

EXETER
T
hree years ago, Exeter volleyball broke a six-year E/A losing streak. That game was a turning point in Exeter volleyball; for the first time in our history, we had a chance at a New England Championship. We didn’t win it that year, but the following two years we added our second and third championships in Exeter volleyball’s history. For us though, it’s not just any game. At E/A we have the support of our school behind us. For the past two years, we’ve had dedicated, incredible fans and for that we say thank you. We also have our traditions. Every year we do a “Secret Santa” style psyche within the team. To this day, the best psyche was a poster from one of the girls to her teammate: she had photoshopped every member of the team into superheros cheering on that teammate. Every year, we see the Andover girls several times throughout the season. When we look across the net, we see our opponents, but we also see the same people we’ve grown alongside. So many of our favorite memories of Exeter are thanks to volleyball: Running around campus with the girls, asking strangers to take silly photos of us. Tracing the Exeter rampart onto a pumpkin during our carving contest. The pride we first felt when we saw our 2014 championship appear on our banner in the gym. Volleyball was where we made our first Exeter friends, it was where we learned that you have to give it your all and that in the end, as long as you do that, you’re OK. The girls have been a source of endless laughter and continual support, and Exeter wouldn’t have been the same without them. For a few of us, this season will be our last. All the sweat, tears, and hours are coming to an end. So for the last time, we are E-X-E-T-E-R! —Rachel Luo ’17 & Kat Dumoulin ’17

P
hillips Academy’s volleyball team is easily the most supportive, loving, and determined group of girls I have been lucky enough to be a part of at Andover. In volleyball, it is impossible to succeed alone; instead, the sport demands that each player trust those around them to cover, block, and pass effectively. The trust developed among girls on the court definitely contributes to our off-court dynamic. I take pride in the support we all have learned to provide one another— support in becoming better athletes, students, and friends. I have played volleyball for the past three seasons and can attest that this year’s team is nothing like those of years past. This fall, eight of the 14 varsity players are new to the roster. And with each new athlete comes new talent, new strengths, and new strategy. In addition to our new players, so much of our strength this season comes from the diversity of our team’s athletic backgrounds—whether it is as captain of Andover’s tennis team or throwing or running track in the spring, all of our seniors are competitive multisport athletes. One of our right-side hitters, Sidney, is also the captain of Andover girls’ winter track and can sprint ladders twice as fast as the next girl. This speed allows her to reach every ball headed her way and approach each hit quickly and decisively. Our PG, Margot, throws javelin each spring. As our outside hitter, she uses that same upper body strength to crush every hit. This diversity of talent and athletic backgrounds will be key in our success this season! Because we had so many new players, many early fall practices were devoted to developing and perfecting the team’s chemistry on the court. Now, as we near the end of our regular season, that chemistry will help us play cohesively in tournament play. I can’t wait to see what this team does with the rest of our season! EA boys’ soccer is a tightly knit group of boys dedicated to working hard in every aspect of their daily lives. At practice, we work to train the good habits and ferret out the bad. This includes anything from tweaking our playing style to fit an upcoming game to learning how to accept constructive criticism and apply it. The team’s strong chemistry allows us to work through adversity and even have a good time doing it. Our coaching staff—Cosgrove, Lincoln, and Hutchins—is visibly engaged and push us to always get better. This team has become integrated into each of our lives. Simply being able to come out after a day of class and play the sport we love with a great group of friends has made such a positive impact on all of us. Oftentimes, we can serve as more than just a sports team, but also as a support group for each other. From academic to social difficulties and everything in between, we can rely on each other for help and guidance. We’ve built a strong chemistry not just on the soccer field, but in every aspect of our lives at Exeter. The game against Andover is always exciting. It is truly a special experience and just being a part of the tradition is remarkable itself. Maintaining this healthy rivalry that is so deeply rooted in our school’s history is an honor. —Quintin DiStefano ’17

T
he boys’ varsity soccer team is special. As captains, we have been fortunate to have been a part of some really successful teams. Each squad has had its differences, but boys’ soccer has always been about a good group of guys playing a game they love. Each and every one of us comes to practice each afternoon excited to play. That love for the sport and mutual respect for one another is what makes our team strong. Thus far, we have had ups and downs. We came out of our opening couple of games with some serious questions. Despite a start that presented many challenges, we have been able to work past them and to define our season. This year we have talent all over the field and on the bench, with a spread of both younger and older players. That depth has given our team a different dimension on the field and a stronger connection off it. As one of our coaches told us, “This team has the capacity” to achieve great things. Playing soccer for Andover has meant so much to both of us. Every time we step on the field, we represent a school and a team rich in history. After a tough game in 2015, our assistant coach reminded us in a fiery speech: “We don’t own the jerseys we wear each game. We are merely their custodians. We play for the legacy left by those who came before us and the chance to leave a legacy for those who will come after.” The legacy of our program is not—and cannot be—valued by the goals we score, but rather by the sacrifice and hard work of successive teams. There is no game more historically important to our team than Andover vs. Exeter. We are excited to have new players get a taste of this experience and for the chance to make our school proud in this contest one more time. —Henry Meyerrose ’17 & Peter Heckendorn ’17

P
hillips Exeter’s 2016 football team came together on September 1 ready to work. Since that day, we have grown to be much more than just a team. We’re a family. We rely on each other both on and off the field. Playing football for Exeter is an experience we’ll never forget. There are so many special aspects and traditions of Big Red football: “Together,” “4,” “Raider of the Week.” The entire team would like to thank Coach Morris, the rest of the coaching staff, Mac and Freddy, and the athletic trainers for all the work they put in every single day to make sure we are ready to play to the best of our abilities every Saturday. We’d also like to thank the fans who come up to support us at Phelps Stadium. This season there are a lot of new faces on the team because so many seniors graduated last spring. During preseason, the team started out with two captains; two more were added when classes started. Our schedule is so short that we are, of course, excited for every game, but E/A is like a whole separate season for us. During this one-week season, we forget about the last seven games and focus solely on beating Andover. Records get thrown out the window and anything can happen: drama, nail-biters, and epic comebacks are all par for the course. It’s an absolute privilege to suit up for the Big Red in November and play in “The Game.” The captains and the rest of the team would like to thank all the fans for coming out and supporting the blue and Big Red. We are excited to play our hearts out and let it all hang out, which is exactly what E/A is about.

lthough the 2016 season may not have started the way we would have liked, we have been persistent in our efforts to improve since the beginning of our journey. It would have been easy for us to pack up our bags and call it quits. However, Andover football does not give up that easily. Every player wears their jersey with pride and holds their head high. During practice, we improve together and learn from our mistakes. We are not a group of individuals; we are a unified team. One person cannot carry the entire team on their back. Each teammate must accomplish their individual tasks in order for us to collectively achieve success. In our second year at Andover, we have learned that Big Blue football is more than just a commitment to the game we all love. It is about flying to the ball every single down and never letting up, no matter the situation. Every time we hit the field, we have confidence in each other and know that our teammates have our backs. This year, a strong core of returning players has stepped up to the challenge, filling the void left by last year’s seniors. The experience of the returning players has been crucial to the team dynamic, as they have embodied the group’s values both on and off the field. They also have helped newer players understand the foundations of Andover football. The enthusiasm of our new players, coupled with the leadership of the returning players, has formed bonds that will drive the team to success. In our final game of the season, we are determined to end on a positive note. Let’s Wreck the Ex!
