Mathematics & Science for Minority Students From the Director

New Opportunities, Meaningful Connections, and a Touch of Nostalgia What an amazing summer! Once again, (MS)2 welcomed 110 students. The group comprised nearly equal numbers of Native American, Latino, and African American scholars. New and different in 2015 were three wonderful opportunities we were able to offer our students. Thanks to a generous grant from the Keller Family Foundation and Jeff and Molly Keller ’89, 38 first-year students participated in a new robotics course (see inside). Using special kits, student teams created robots for a competition at the end of the program. Students were so excited and challenged by this new course that they often spent double the amount of time we had allotted to design and program their robots. Second, we welcomed 10 (MS)2 alumni from the Class of 1995 back to Phillips Academy for a few days in July (see inside). Alums spent time in classes with current students, toured the campus, watched the Cultural Sharing performance on Saturday, and challenged third-years to a volleyball game on Sunday. Alums also shared stories of their education and career trajectory and the positive impact (MS)2 has had on their lives. Finally, we had a visit from several (MS)2 Advisory Council members, who sat in on classes, had small-group discussions with students, and met (MS)2 teachers and college counselors. Students, teachers, and council members alike enjoyed making these connections and learning from one another. All in all, it was a very satisfying year, and I am counting the days to summer 2016!

A Phillips Academy Outreach Program

Please Support this Extraordinary Program Participation in (MS)2 is free of charge to all students for all three summers. Full scholarships—covering tuition, room and board, and travel expenses—are made possible thanks to generous gifts from individuals and foundations. • A gift of $6,000 supports one scholar each summer. • A gift of $125,000 to the (MS)2 endowment supports one named scholarship in perpetuity. • A gift of any size is appreciated. Visit www.andover.edu/ms2giving to make your gift. For further information, contact Sharyn Bahn at 978-749-4523 or sbahn@andover.edu.

(MS)2 was founded in 1977 to address the compelling need to cultivate the mathematical and scientific abilities of economically disadvantaged African American, Latino, and Native American high school students. In a residential setting on the historic Phillips Academy campus in Andover, Mass., the three-summer program challenges students intellectually and exposes them to peers and educators with diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and aspirations.
