Mathematics & Science for Minority Students From the Director

A Special Reunion, Expanded College Counseling Support, and Alumna Honors In mid-July, (MS)2 celebrated its 40th anniversary with a reunion weekend filled with receptions, reflections, and reconnections. I am grateful to the numerous alumni, former faculty, and supporters who returned to campus. Our 112 current students especially enjoyed hearing from alumni about how (MS)2 transformed their lives. To view the video shown at reunion—produced by (MS)2 Advisory Council member Jesus Beltran, (MS)2 ’95—visit our new website, www.andover.edu/ms2. Sean Logan, Andover’s dean of college counseling, was moved to action by the video’s inspiring stories: Phillips Academy’s College Counseling Office will provide continued support to (MS)2 Class of 2017 graduates throughout their senior year. This builds on the good work of College Counselor Karina Hernandez-Guarniz, (MS)2 ’96, who provided extra assistance with (MS)2 scholars’ college applications in 2016, which resulted in exciting admittances to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, Northwestern, and Johns Hopkins universities and Williams College this fall. More good news: (MS)2 Advisory Council Cochair Donna Sanabria, (MS)2 ’87, received a Richard D. Parsons Community Impact Award from Time Warner in September for her work with the program. Speaking at the award ceremony, Donna explained how (MS)2 fulfills Phillips Academy’s mission of a “private school with a public purpose.” The award resulted in a $5,000 grant for (MS)2 plus the creation of several CNN summer internships in Atlanta for our 2017 graduates, which will begin in summer 2018. As always, I am delighted to see firsthand the transformation of our 112 students during their three summers with us. Their dedication and resilience is remarkable. Despite the many issues directly affecting them—from new immigration laws to DACA to violence in their hometowns—they persevere and graduate determined to help make our world a better place.

A Phillips Academy Outreach Program

Please Support This Extraordinary Program Participation in (MS)2 is free of charge to all students for all three summers. Full scholarships—covering tuition, room and board, and travel expenses—are made possible thanks to generous gifts from individuals and foundations. • A gift of $7,000 will support one scholar’s summer experience. • A gift of $125,000 to the (MS)2 endowment provides one named scholarship in perpetuity. • Gifts of any size are most appreciated. Visit www.andover.edu/ms2giving to make your gift. For further information, please contact Beth Parsons at 978-749-4523 or bparsons@andover.edu.

At a Glance

(MS)2 was founded in 1977 to address the compelling need to cultivate the mathematical and scientific abilities of economically disadvantaged African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American high school students. In a residential setting on the historic Phillips Academy campus in Andover, Mass., the three-summer program challenges students intellectually and introduces them to peers and educators with diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and aspirations.

(MS)2 at 40: Remembering the Past, Reimagining the Future Since Phillips Academy established (MS)2 in 1977, more than 1,200 bright young minority students have graduated from the program, pursued advanced degrees, and become scientists, engineers, teachers, doctors, policy makers, and more. To celebrate the program’s 40th anniversary, more than 100 alumni, faculty, and program supporters returned to Andover in mid-July. Former program directors Elwin Sykes, Victor Young, and Edith Walker were thrilled to reunite with former students and to meet the current (MS)2 scholars. For many alumni, it was their first time back to campus—to a place and a program they found transformational. The weekend was also very meaningful to the three classes of (MS)2 students who were in the midst of their program. As they listened to comments from Daveed Frazier, (MS)2 ’81, renowned spine surgeon and Broadway producer; Kristina Halona, (MS)2 ’95, principal systems engineer at Orbital ATK; and Angel Taveras, (MS)2 ’87, former mayor of Providence, the awareness of what their own futures could possibly hold blossomed. If you missed the summer celebration, by sure to visit bit.ly/MS2-40th—and plan to return to campus in 2027. As (MS)2 Advisory Council cochair Donna Sanabria, (MS)2 ’87, recently remarked, “If the 40th was a spark, I would like our 50th to be a bonfire.”

“Listening to the alumni reminded me not only of how capable I am as an academic, but that I have the ambition needed to succeed. Seeing how hard they have worked reinvigorated me. I am who I am because of this program. These alumni showed me what I can become.” Devin Montgomery, (MS)2 15

Spotlight on an (MS)2 Graduate Alec Lee, (MS)2 ’17

“ I remember the day I got into (MS)2 like it was yesterday. I was just being a normal teenager, lying in bed and watching Netflix. I decided to check my email and noticed one from (MS)2—the first word I read was ‘Congratulations!’ I knew my life was going to change.” A Native American (MS)2 scholar from the Navajo Nation, Alec Lee had never been outside of New Mexico prior to attending (MS)2. But that did not impede his success at Andover. “Alec arrived at the dorm a bit more surefooted than some of the other students,” wrote his house counselor. “Although it was his first year at (MS)2, he seemed to already have a strong sense of purpose and direction.”

If anything, Alec’s self-motivation and drive increased over the course of the three summers. At his home high school, Santa Fe Indian School, Alec is an honor student, varsity athlete, club leader, and peer tutor. In his final (MS)2 summer, Alec codirected the Native American scholars in the annual Cultural Sharing performance, which highlighted the Dakota Access Pipeline’s impact on Native and indigenous communities.

During the graduation ceremony, Alec reflected on his (MS)2 experience: “I realized that the lifelong friendships I created were no longer friendships—they were a family bond. I not only got accepted into a summer program, I was accepted into a family as a whole.”
