Mathematics & Science for Minority Students From the Director
A Special Reunion, Expanded College Counseling Support, and Alumna Honors In mid-July, (MS)2 celebrated its 40th anniversary with a reunion weekend filled with receptions, reflections, and reconnections. I am grateful to the numerous alumni, former faculty, and supporters who returned to campus. Our 112 current students especially enjoyed hearing from alumni about how (MS)2 transformed their lives. To view the video shown at reunion—produced by (MS)2 Advisory Council member Jesus Beltran, (MS)2 ’95—visit our new website, www.andover.edu/ms2. Sean Logan, Andover’s dean of college counseling, was moved to action by the video’s inspiring stories: Phillips Academy’s College Counseling Office will provide continued support to (MS)2 Class of 2017 graduates throughout their senior year. This builds on the good work of College Counselor Karina Hernandez-Guarniz, (MS)2 ’96, who provided extra assistance with (MS)2 scholars’ college applications in 2016, which resulted in exciting admittances to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, Northwestern, and Johns Hopkins universities and Williams College this fall. More good news: (MS)2 Advisory Council Cochair Donna Sanabria, (MS)2 ’87, received a Richard D. Parsons Community Impact Award from Time Warner in September for her work with the program. Speaking at the award ceremony, Donna explained how (MS)2 fulfills Phillips Academy’s mission of a “private school with a public purpose.” The award resulted in a $5,000 grant for (MS)2 plus the creation of several CNN summer internships in Atlanta for our 2017 graduates, which will begin in summer 2018. As always, I am delighted to see firsthand the transformation of our 112 students during their three summers with us. Their dedication and resilience is remarkable. Despite the many issues directly affecting them—from new immigration laws to DACA to violence in their hometowns—they persevere and graduate determined to help make our world a better place.

A Phillips Academy Outreach Program
Please Support This Extraordinary Program Participation in (MS)2 is free of charge to all students for all three summers. Full scholarships—covering tuition, room and board, and travel expenses—are made possible thanks to generous gifts from individuals and foundations. • A gift of $7,000 will support one scholar’s summer experience. • A gift of $125,000 to the (MS)2 endowment provides one named scholarship in perpetuity. • Gifts of any size are most appreciated. Visit www.andover.edu/ms2giving to make your gift. For further information, please contact Beth Parsons at 978-749-4523 or bparsons@andover.edu.

(MS)2 was founded in 1977 to address the compelling need to cultivate the mathematical and scientific abilities of economically disadvantaged African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American high school students. In a residential setting on the historic Phillips Academy campus in Andover, Mass., the three-summer program challenges students intellectually and introduces them to peers and educators with diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and aspirations.
