Cutting-Edge Cancer Therapy Offers Hope For Pets Hope Veterinary Specialists and the Veterinary CyberKnife Cancer Center in Malvern, PA offer a unique type of cancer treatment that is typically only available in human medicine. A machine called a CyberKnife offers a non-invasive therapy that allows a high dose of radiation to be delivered to a pet’s tumor in just a few treatments, spanning a week or less. By comparison, traditional radiation protocols using conventional machines deliver treatments on a daily basis for a month or more. The CyberKnife administers precise and targeted radiation to the tumor, practically eliminating the presence of side effects thus allowing the pet immediate return to normal function and good quality of life. Other, more traditional forms of radiation are also available at Hope and the CyberKnife Center to complement the country’s only veterinary-dedicated CyberKnife.

Radiation is typically used to treat localized tumors, such as tumors of the head and neck (brain tumors, nasal tumors, oral tumors), abdomen (prostate or bladder) and bone tumors, but there are a wide variety of cancers that are eligible for treatment. Radiation is often coupled with other forms of therapy such as immunotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery and other holistic approaches such as acupuncture. At Hope Veterinary Specialists, we are proud to offer a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment that includes clinical trials, traditional chemotherapy as well as cutting-edge radiation therapy. Emancipet l Low Cost. Big Heart.
For the past 18 years, Emancipet, a non-profit founded in central Texas, has served more than a half a million pets. A growing organization, Emancipet is building a national low cost veterinary care system, and in February of 2017, Northeast Philadelphia became home to an Emancipet low-cost pet clinic. This clinic is the newest in Emancipet’s system, and its first location outside Texas, where it operates in four cities. At Emancipet, a team of licensed, trained veterinarians and veterinary professionals offer spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, microchips, monthly flea and heartworm prevention, puppy and kitten de-worming, and treatment for common conditions, such as skin and ear infections. While surgeries require appointments, all other services are available on a walk-in basis. The Philadelphia clinic was made possible through a $450,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. The grant allowed Emancipet to lease the 3,700 square foot space at 575 Adams Avenue, and purchase the equipment and supplies needed to open the clinic. “We are especially grateful to PetSmart Charities for making this dream a reality,” says Amy Mills, CEO of Emancipet. “Their support will allow us to serve thousands of pets each year, making northeast Philadelphia a safer and more humane community for pets and the people who love them,” Mills says.
Because Emancipet believes that veterinary care should be affordable and accessible to all pet owners, the organization advocates for public policy that improves the lives of pets in underserved communities, and recently launched Emancipet New School, which equips and inspires animal welfare professionals in becoming change makers. Through grassroots efforts, including door-to-door outreach, establishing relationships, and a caring presence in the community, Emancipet is fast becoming a trusted resource for pet owners in Philadelphia’s northeast neighborhood. Philadelphia native, Amanda Foxman is Emancipet’s vice president in Philadelphia. Foxman has seen the good that comes from making vet care not only affordable, but also accessible, to families living in traditionally underserved communities. “Keeping pets healthy, and keeping pets and their people together, is why Emancipet exists, and everything we do is focused on that,” Foxman says. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be providing lowcost veterinary care in this neighborhood, where it is very much needed.”

The relatively new national sport of K-9 Nose Work® was created by founders Amy Herot, Jill Marie O’Brien and Ron Gaunt to provide an opportunity for companion and sport dog of all ages and breeds to have a fun outlet for their natural hunting and scenting abilities. Dogs initially learn to search for a treat reward in one of several boxes. As they become more confident in their searching, the game expands to searching for a specific odor hidden in multiple rooms, exterior areas, and vehicles. No prior training experience is required to start! While all dogs benefit from the increased mental exercise and bonding time spent with their owner(s), their humans benefit in numerous ways as well. The sport does not require lots of time, space, or equipment and allows you to progress from beginner to advanced levels and competitive trials at your own pace. While official K-9 Nose Work classes are not intended to prepare a pet dog for professional detection work, they are patterned after the training model used for working detection dogs. To locate a certified K-9 Nose Work Instructor in your area, go to the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) at www.nacsw.org. PROVIDED BY

PET FRIENDLY
Finding the Perfect Pet-Friendly Rental Home Finding the perfect pet-friendly rental may not always be easy, but with nearly half of all renters owning a dog or cat, pet owners are starting to find more and more welcome mats. Plan Ahead: Moving-related issues are among the most common reasons pet owners are forced to give up their pets. In a recent American Humane Association survey, “moving” was the most common reason and “my landlord won’t allow pets” was the fourth most-common reason by pet owners for relinquishing their pets. Pet owners are understandably heartbroken at the thought of giving up a family member, but it doesn’t have to be that way. With just a little planning, you can find the perfect pet-friendly place! Know the Policy: Most landlords provide their pet policies up front but if an apartment’s pet friendliness is not immediately clear, it’s best to ask right away. Pet policies can vary from one rental community to another. Be sure to contact the rental office directly to get a clear understanding of their pet policy before signing the lease. The benefits to the thousands of homeless pets who are euthanized each year for lack of a home cannot be overstated. After all, a house is not a home without a pet.

Their Final Goodbye Is Just as Important Secure Passages Pet Tracking System for Your Peace of Mind Since our funeral professionals control the entire process, we can ensure that your pet’s cremated remains will be returned much faster than other providers, typically within 72 hours of your pet’s passing. We will care for your pet with the same reverence as we would treat any other member of your family and even arrange for your family to witness the cremation process if you so desire. As part of our exceptional pet care, we offer the following levels of service: Private Cremation: We are the ONLY PET CREMATORY to offer a TRUE PRIVATE cremation. This is a cremation procedure in which only ONE pet is present in the cremation chamber during the cremation procedure and the cremated remains are returned to the owner. Semi-Private Cremation: Is a cremation procedure during which several pets are present in the chamber BUT separated inside the chamber during the cremation procedure. This is generally the only type of cremation that other providers offer that allows for the return of the pet’s cremated remains. They commonly refer to this type of cremation as an “Individual Cremation”. With this procedure it is probable that the pet’s remains will be comingled. Please know that individual does not mean private! Communal Cremation: Sometimes referred to as “Group” cremation. This is a cremation procedure where multiple pets are cremated together without any form of separation. These commingled cremated remains are not returned to their owners. PROVIDED BY:

PET PHOTOGRAPHY
Honoring our Senior Pets One of the most important things we can do for our pets is to provide proper care and attention as they age. The physical and mental changes can be devastatingly sudden or slow and barely visible. It is our duty as pet owners to recognize these changes and ensure our pets have the tools to live long, healthy lives.

“When dogs leap onto your bed it’s because they adore being with you; when cats leap into your bed it’s because they adore your bed.” – Alisha Everett Treating your senior pet to a pet photography session is a special way to capture the bond you share together and to enhance their quality of life. The normal, the every-day— are fleeting moments we take for granted. Whether your dog is sitting in his favorite chair or your feline is curled up in her sunlit window, capturing these everyday instances turns them into extraordinary memories. Not only that, these are memories we can literally hold in our hands. Photos are tangible, powerful remembrances of how special and meaningful one’s beloved pet is. The images also emphasize their very unique personalities. By freezing these moments, we are cementing their importance for the rest of our lives. The photos allow us to heal and provide comfort after we say goodbye and serve as powerful reminders of the extraordinary bond we share with our pets.

Whether you have a dog or a cat one thing is for sure, owning that pet comes with great responsibility. Pets are not accessories, they are companions that need love, care and devotion. Make him part of the family. Pets, especially dogs, need companionship. They are traditionally pack creatures and need the warmth and love that comes with living indoors with their family. Pet proof your house. To keep your pet healthy you should research what household products and foods can harm your pet. Make sure these are kept in secure locations so your pet cannot get into them. Get your pet microchipped. And always keep and ID tag on your pet to help identify him if he is lost or stolen. Train your pet to understand obedience. Dogs need to understand basic direction like “sit” and “stay.” In an emergency situation these cues could save your pet’s life. Give him the exercise he needs. Pets need regular exercise to stay fit and release their energy. Without it, your pet will begin to act out. Young pets that do not get enough exercise are more likely to develop negative behavioral issues. Feed him properly. Ask your vet what type of food and how much is right for you pet. Keeping your pet on a regular, portion controlled diet will help to prevent weight related health problems. Socialize your pet. Meeting new people and other pets improves the confidence of your pet. And having extra playmates will help relieve some of your pet’s built-up energy. Love your pet. You are your pet’s favorite thing in the whole world. He craves your love, attention and care. So show him the love and devotion he shows you!

Change a Life: Raise a puppy for Canine Partners for Life You can help change the life of an individual with a disability by raising a puppy for Canine Partners for Life (CPL)! CPL trains and places service dogs to assist individuals with a wide variety of physical and cognitive disabilities. Each dog is taken through a two-year, comprehensive and customized training program to meet the specific needs of their human partner. All puppies are raised by volunteers for their first year of life and CPL is in need of more volunteers willing to take on this significant and rewarding job.

THE
Puppy home volunteers care for a CPL puppy starting at eight weeks and ending around fifteen months. The volunteers are responsible for housebreaking, crate training, teaching their puppy basic obedience commands, socializing it in public every day, attending regular vet visits, and participating in two training classes per month held at CPL’s facility in Cochranville, PA. Once the puppy is approximately fifteen months old, he/she will return to CPL for their second year of training. At the end of two years, the dog is placed with an individual who has a disability and will provide independence for years to come. Prior dog handling/training experience is not required. CPL staff will guide you through the process and is always available to help. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer puppy home, please visit CPL’s website, www.k94life.org, to complete a volunteer application or call 610-8694902 for more information. PROVIDED BY

The Senior Scenter A Cage Free Senior Dog Sanctuary
Our “Dog House” was built to accommodate Senior Dogs that have been dumped by their owners or have become “homeless” through no fault of their own. Many times their owner has been admitted to a nursing home or has passed on. Because we are small and depend on volunteers we must limit the number of seniors we can house and unfortunately cannot take them all. None of the seniors live in cages. Everyone has free range of their sanctuary home and the yard 24/7. Many have multiple medical problems and may only have weeks or months to live. It is our mission to make sure that they are loved and comfortable during their last moments on earth. We rely solely on donations which is challenging since most of our dogs come and stay to the end so there are no adoption fees as with other rescues/shelters. We provide them with EVERY comfort a dog could want. The best food, comfy beds, a/c or heat, music 24/7 and LOTS of love! There are several ways you can help our seniors if you like what we do!
