Your Dog’s Second Brain: The Gut The enteric nervous system’s network of nerves, neurons, and neurotransmitters extends along the entire digestive tract – from the esophagus, through the stomach and intestines, and down to the anus. Because the enteric nervous system relies on the same type of neurons and neurotransmitters that are found in the central nervous system, some people call it our “second brain.” It is estimated there are equal numbers of bacteria in our GI tract as cells in the human body. These microorganisms have evolved with humans and animals over the centuries. Dysbiosis (or alterations in the GI bacterial flora) is strongly associated with several mood disorders and other chronic inflammatory diseases in people. Although serotonin is well known as a brain neurotransmitter (promotes a positive feeling), it is estimated that 90 percent of the body’s serotonin is actually made in the digestive tract. Therefore, it would seem prudent to foster a healthy microbiome as growing evi-

dence reveals the link between intestinal dysbiosis and several chronic diseases including those of the brain. As technology advances it has become easier to sequence the gut microbiome and the differences between healthy individuals and those with chronic diseases are becoming more obvious. Microorganisms in the gut also help regulate the body’s immune response. In an ideal circumstance the host’s immune system has symbiotic relationship with the microbes to form an alliance against outside pathogens. If this relationship is disturbed pathogens are more likely to infect the host through the GI tract. While what measures need to be taken to obtain the healthiest microbiome are still up for much debate the importance of it pertaining to neurologic and chronic illnesses is clearer than ever. Life is short; let the Caddy handle the dirty work! The POOP Caddy™ story began in early 2013, when I was unexpectedly laid-off from my fulltime job. This life change allowed me plenty of free time to do what I love…to walk our (3) dogs – Harley, Sammy, and Bob. What I quickly discovered is that Sammy enjoyed the walks even more than the other dogs. Not only would he stop at almost every house to smell all the new scents and mark every tree, but he also enjoyed “doo-ing his business” shortly into our walk. If I wasn’t having fun while I was training my dog, I wouldn’t spend as much time training as I do either! Here are some tips to make training fun for both human AND canine. Many times if people only do a basic obedience class they get stuck in the rut of practicing the few behaviors they learned like sit, down and stay. The things you can teach your dog are limitless: spin in a circle, sit up and beg, crawl, hug, bow, shake, weave through your legs, etc. It’s just a matter of getting ideas. The AKC has a new trick dog title that can be a great source. Even if you don’t want to take the test, going through the list can give you some fun ideas. The list of tricks is available here: www.akc.org/trick-Dog/trick-dog-applications. Another source is Kyra Sundance’s book 101 Dog Tricks. Another way to keep training fun is to combine play time and training. Playing tug with your dog can be a great reward for a job well done in training. Playing fetch? Instead of just tossing the ball, have your dog do some work between tosses. Incorporating play will make the training sessions more fun for both you and your dog. These few easy changes can really up the fun factor.

Introducing the Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition The Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition is a collective of animal welfare agencies working together to end the killing of savable pets in shelters. We will achieve our goal by helping struggling owners keep their pets and increasing rescue, adoption, and foster placements for pets with nowhere else to go. The mission of the Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition is to use collaborative public and private partnerships to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs in the City of Philadelphia and to promote humane alternatives for community cats, ultimately attaining 100% safe placement of healthy and treatable pets.
