DOG TRAINING
Does your dog REALLY know it’s name? The foundation of a solid recall (i.e. “Come”) command is for your dog to know and respond to his name. But as owners, we frequently skip an important step. While we start calling the dog by their name, we neglect to do anything to actually add VALUE to their name. So while they may perk their ears up and look at you when you say their name in the house, they completely blow you off when they are out and about in the world and there are far more interesting things going on. Here are some tips on how to make your dog love and respond to their name…. Step 1 – Have a lot of treats handy. While your dog is looking at you, just say their name and give them a treat. Do that many, many, many times. You can easily do this with your dog’s dinner! That bowl full of kibble gives you a great opportunity to do this a hundred times a day. With dog training, it’s all about repetition.

Finding the perfect pet-friendly rental may not always be easy, but with nearly half of all rent- More Than Just Ice Cream ers owning a dog or cat, pet owners are starting 1119 Locust St, Philadelphia PA to find more and more welcome mats. Plan Ahead: Moving-related issues are among the most common reasons pet owners are forced to give up their pets. In a recent American Humane Association survey, “moving” was the most common reason and “my landlord won’t allow pets” was the fourth most-common reason by pet owners for relinquishing their pets. Pet owners are understandably heartbroken at the thought of giving up a family member, but it doesn’t have to be that way. With just a little planning, you can find the perfect pet-friendly place! Know the Policy: Most landlords provide their pet policies up front but if an apartment’s pet friendliness is not immediately clear, it’s best to ask right away. Pet policies can vary from one rental community to another. Be sure to contact the rental office directly to get a clear understanding of their pet policy before signing the lease.

The Laurels – Pet Cemetery, Services, and Aquamation Center
W
est Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, PA has proudly served families for nearly two centuries. In June of 2018, West Laurel Hill was pleased to announce the grand opening of The Laurels – Pet Cemetery, Services, and Aquamation Center. The Laurels is a beautifully designed cemetery and service center specially created to honor the memory of pets. The Laurels offers unique pet services, including pet packages, which provides dignified services and a final resting place for pets, as well as Aquamation – a water-based process which is a gentle and environmentally-friendly alternative to flame cremation. We know your pet has given your family years of joy and unconditional love, so we understand how deeply you love your pet and are honored to serve pets in the same loving, respectful and exceptional way we serve families. “We are known for providing unrivaled support for families in memorializing their loved ones, and now we’re proud to say that includes their pets,” says Nancy Goldenberg, President and CEO of West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Funeral Home and Laurel Hill Cemetery. “Once again,
we are demonstrating our edge by offering highly valuable and innovative services, in a beautiful setting with state-of-the-art technology.” Conveniently located on the grounds of West Laurel Hill Cemetery in a distinct area, The Laurels is a private serene sanctuary; a perfect resting place for your special family member. This three-acre landscaped and wooded property includes a walking trail for loved ones to enjoy while visiting and remembering. hey usually have a calmer temperament… think of it as a canine retiree! Easy walks, plenty of naps and lounging around make senior pets the mellow choice. Seniors can also inspire you to slow down and ‘stop to smell the roses’. Petting an animal has many medical benefits for humans such as lowering your heart rate…and making you smile!
What you see is what you get: you’ll know important things like their full-grown size, personality and grooming requirements…if you’re not so into surprises, an older dog is for you!

Simple Ways to Cure Your Pet’s Boredom
ACCT
Founding Member
O
ur pets are a huge part of our lives. However, they are not the only part of our lives, and that means sometimes you will be busy and your pet will be bored. Make Sure Your Pet Gets Plenty of Time to be Active Your pet should be getting lots of playtime in non-confined spaces. For dogs, walks and fetch are great for exercise and stress-relief. For cats, climbing tree or tower will provide some much needed freedom.

ADOPT • DONATE • VOLUNTEER ACCT Philly handles more animals than any other animal shelter service organization in the region. We are open for adoptions and lifesaving each and every day including holidays.
Get Creative with Toys When it comes to toys, it’s definitely about quality over quantity. Interactive toys—like those that require your pet to figure out how to release a treat—are great boredom busters. Try hiding toys around the house for your pet to find. Play Dates If you know somebody who has a dog or a cat that gets along with yours, bring them together for a play date. Your pet will enjoy socializing with a new companion. Keep Your Pet Healthy A healthy pet is a happy pet. Feed your pet a healthy, well-balanced diet and always have fresh water available - it goes a long way towards dealing with behavioral problems that come from boredom. Always Find Time For Your Pet It is crucial that you are giving your pet oneon-one attention every day. Training, playing, bathing, and belly scratching are great ways to show your pet how much you care and also helps with their health and general well-being. You both will be happier for it!

The Mood-Boosting Power of Pets Increasing exercise. Taking a dog for a walk, hike or run are fun and rewarding ways to fit healthy daily exercise into your schedule. Studies have shown that dog owners are far more likely to meet their daily exercise requirements. Providing companionship. Companionship can help prevent illness and even add years to your life. Caring for an animal can help make you feel needed and wanted, and take the focus away from your problems. Nothing beats loneliness like coming home to a wagging tail or purring cat.

Reducing anxiety. The companionship of an animal can offer comfort, ease anxiety, and build self-confidence. Because pets live in the moment—they don’t worry about yesterday or tomorrow—they can also help you become more mindful of the present moment.

Adding structure to your day. Many pets, especially dogs, require a regular feeding and exercise schedule. Having a consistent routine keeps an animal balanced and calm—and it can work for you, too. No matter your mood— one plaintive look from your pet and you’ll have to get out of bed to care for them. Providing sensory stress relief. Touch and movement are two healthy ways to quickly manage stress. Stroking a dog, cat, or other animal can lower blood pressure and help you quickly feel calmer and less stressed.

Helping you meet new people. Pets can be a great social network for their owners. Dog owners frequently stop and talk to each other on walks, hikes, or in a dog park. Dog owners also meet new people in pet stores, clubs, and training classes.
