Expertise - Driven PhiloWilke Partnership was formed in 1985 by Dana Wilke and Roger Philo on the premise that the best way to serve their healthcare clients is to provide industry-specialized design with client-specific solutions from a team of expertise-driven architects. They created their firm with a niche focus – healthcare and research architecture – and began integrating and training everyone in the office, from administrative staff to interns to architects, to respond to each client’s unique requests. PhiloWilke continues to encompass architecture, interior design, planning, and development for clients while staying true to Dana and Roger’s founding mission. Our team has grown into a distinct organizational structure, providing a small firm’s personal and specialized service coupled with the depth of experience offered by a large organization. Our design philosophy drives a process that values collaboration, practical design, and strategic consensus-building to help our clients achieve their goals. Our unique and collective experience has propelled PhiloWilke to design many high-profile and technically complicated medical projects, including a facility that housed one of the first lithotripters in the US. PhiloWilke has designed several one-of-a-kinds and first-of-a-kind projects for healthcare and research facilities, which are among the most complicated spaces in the world. A few of our unique projects: the first operational BrainSUITE in the US, located at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; CyberKnife, located at the Michael Debakey VA Hospital; Elekta’s Synergy Triple Energy Linear Accelerator, located at Memorial Hermann Hospital; one of the largest cyclotrons in the nation, located at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; the largest NMR facility in the country, located at Texas A&M University; and the installation of the new IR Discovery Interventional Radiology Unit at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital.

PROJECT APPROACH & METHODOLOGY
PhiloWilke, the Owner, the stakeholders, and our consultants are all a part of a single project team working together to create distinctive projects with functional designs that match the client’s message and surpass expectations. The foundation of our design methodology is based on strong relationships built by providing proactive, high-quality, personalized professional services by our most experienced team members to our clients while balancing functionality, design, cost, durability, and future demands. To achieve this, all projects are designed and completed using threedimensional computer models, including BIM. Early visualization allows our clients to view their projects in 3D. These tools test layout options quickly and systematically, ultimately providing a more thorough understanding of a project’s design intent.
The emergence of adaptive-reuse healthcare facilities within retail settings has been the logical progression of servicecentric care within our nation’s healthcare system that has been present in America for decades. Our team has developed the skills and resources to provide you with the unique solutions needed for various community-focused locations. 4

LARGEST TILTWALL HOSPITAL IN THE COUNTRY design, speed to market and quality healthcare in one package
THE STATS MEMORIAL HERMANN CYPRESS HOSPITAL LOCATION: Cypress, TX COMPLETED: 2017 PROJECT SIZE: 400,000 sf PROJECT TYPE: New AWARDS: 2016 TILT UP ACHIEVEMENT

Memorial Hermann Health System Cypress Hospital features an 80-bed, state-of-the-art facility. The hospital gives the Cypress community immediate access to high-quality and safe patient care and advanced services that only a clinically-integrated, comprehensive health system like Memorial Hermann can deliver. The project, a 400,000 SF full-service hospital, opened its doors in March 2017. The hospital features eight operating rooms, 16 intensive care units, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, a dedicated women’s program including labor and delivery rooms, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, lab, and pharmacy. In addition, the hospital offers services for Cardiology, including a Catheterization Lab and Nuclear Medicine. The hospital also features an imaging department, including Ultrasound, CT, and MRI.
ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL
NEW
The Cypress campus master plan includes the capacity to add a 195-bed inpatient tower to accommodate future growth, as well as the construction of a dedicated Memorial Hermann Life Flight® helipad and space for two additional medical office buildings and an eight-story parking garage on 32.13 acres.
wraps the tower giving it a feeling of movement. Topping off the tower is a tapered metal cornice that appears to float above the tower. This effect is heightened at night when the cornice is lit from below. Carefully placed lit signage adds to the overall effect.
Creating a strong visual statement that adhered to the Memorial Hermann brand was paramount. Given that most people are passing the building at 70 mph, the statement had to be bold day and night. To achieve this, the design team developed a vertical tower that acts as a hub for the hospital complex, connecting to the bed tower and diagnostic and treatment components. Rising 112’, the tower is the tallest element on the campus and acts as a beacon, visible from all orientations. The beacon feature has become a Memorial Hermann trademark that manifests itself differently on each campus within the Memorial Hermann System. Multi-colored reflective glass
The Memorial Hermann Cypress hospital and its sister facility in Pearland make fresh, contemporary visual statements that, while different in concept, achieve the same goal of broadcasting the Memorial Hermann brand.

PHILOWILKE PARTNERSHIP HAS COMPLETED 45+ EMERGENCY CENTRIC MICRO-HOSPITALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
Emerus is a community-based hospital system that provides a caring and empathetic environment. Each facility’s primary service is emergency medicine. Designed to accommodate and provide suburban communities with convenient care in emergency situations. These hospitals are designed to house diagnostic and imaging equipment for a speedier assessment of the patient’s condition and streamlined admittance procedures. With multiple locations throughout the United States, ranging in size. The facilities are designed to facilitate medical office build-outs. Designed with a dual purpose, hospital patient care is located on the lowest level, with medical offices and administration on the upper levels. When tasked with creating the design standards for Emerus’ prototypical free-standing hospitals, the client wanted to establish a visual identity that adhered to their corporate brand—yet assimilated to the changing regional styles. The prototype is designed for flexibility to adapt to each state’s licensure regulations. Whether it is being constructed under Texas Hospital Licensure regulations or Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI), PhiloWilke has created a fully compliant prototype.

ADAPTIVE REUSE FOR SPORTS REHAB former retail chain location transformed for healing
The Houston Methodist Woodlands campus took over an existing vacant building, formerly Charming Charlie’s and YES Fitness, as the new location for their Sports Medicine program. Going into an existing building with existing utilities and conditions that impact the design is always a challenge. One of the project’s main goals SPORTS REHAB was to utilize as much of the existing building as possible while still giving the community the best Sports Houston Methodist Medicine program in the area. A challenge we found in working with the existing building was determining LOCATION: Woodlands, TX the best spatial layout for the programmatic functions. We went through multiple planning iterations trying COMPLETED: 2019 to incorporate as much of the existing building elements until we settled on the final layout. Additionally, the PROJECT SIZE: 14,000 sf Owner desired a budget-friendly design which was achieved through the careful identification of material PROJECT TYPE: Renovation selection and the use of the existing building layout. THE STATS CAPROCK HOSPITAL CapRock Health LOCATION: Bryan, TX COMPLETED: 2018 PROJECT SIZE: 20,760 sf PROJECT TYPE: New
HEALTH PORTFOLIO
The CapRock Emergency Hospital is a premier facility in Bryan, Texas. The hospital was uniquely designed on a skewed axis giving the building a slight bend; this maximizes the facility’s visibility. The bend is further defined by the building’s exaggerated core and two extending wings; each houses a separate hospital function. The core acts as the central hub maintaining the high volume of the administrative support systems and public interactions. The two wings operate as the main work areas, the emergency department, and the patient care area. Within the patient wing is a semi-private expressed indoor and outdoor family area. This area is a defining feature of the facility as it differentiates it from typical small hospitals. To enhance the patient and family experience, oversized and clear story windows were employed to provide natural sunlight and access to the enhanced landscaping. The entire site was carefully designed to promote natural shading and color to instill a serene healing environment. 25
