HUMAN EXPERIENCE 1

Expertise - Driven

The PhiloWilke Partnership was formed in 1985 by Dana Wilke and Roger Philo on the premise that the best way to serve their healthcare clients is to provide industry-specialized design with client-specific solutions from a team of expertise-driven architects. They created their firm with a niche focus – healthcare and research architecture – and began integrating and training everyone in the office, from administrative staff to interns to architects, in order to respond to each client’s unique requests. After 38 years, PhiloWilke continues to encompass architecture, interior design, planning and development for clients while staying true to Dana and Roger’s founding mission. Our team has grown into a distinct organizational structure, providing the personal and specialized service of a small firm coupled with the depth of resources and experience offered by a large organization. While our core business continues to concentrate on healthcare and research architecture, our team has cultivated a diverse portfolio including science and technology, higher education, and commercial projects. Our design philosophy drives a process that values collaboration, practical design, and strategic consensus-building to help our clients achieve their goals.

Our unique and collective experience has propelled PhiloWilke to design many high profile and technically complicated medical projects, including a facility that housed one of the first lithotripters installed in the US. PhiloWilke has designed several one-of-a-kind and first-of-a-kind projects for healthcare and research facilities, which are among the most complicated spaces in the world. A few of our unique projects: the first operational BrainSUITE in the US, located at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; CyberKnife, located at the Michael Debakey VA Hospital; Elekta’s Synergy Triple Energy Linear Accelerator, located at Memorial Hermann Hospital; one of the largest cyclotrons in the nation, located at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; the largest NMR facility in the nation, located at Texas A&M University; and the installation of the new IR Discovery Interventional Radiology Unit at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital.

PROJECT APPROACH & METHODOLOGY

PhiloWilke, the Owner, the stakeholders, and our consultants are all a part of a single project team working together to create distinctive projects with functional designs that match the client’s message and surpass expectations. The foundation of our design methodology is based on strong relationships built by providing proactive, high quality, personalized professional services by our most experienced team members to our clients while balancing functionality, design, cost, durability, and future demands. To achieve this all projects are designed and completed using threedimensional computer models including BIM. Early visualization allows our clients to view their project in 3D. These tools test layout options quickly and systematically, ultimately providing a more thorough understanding of a project’s design intent. As early as schematic design, we implement institutional standards into our drawings and begin developing the project manual. This allows our team to become familiar with the applicable requirements and build appropriate elements and design criteria into the building model, ultimately ensuring coordination between the standards and construction documents. 4

12

SOUTH TOWER EXPANSION, RENOVATION AND RELOCATION Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital’s South Tower expansion is the development of a new 8-story tower and the renovation of 135,000 square feet of existing hospital space. The addition will tie into the existing hospital’s structure to add 138 patient beds, increase the surgical department by 5 operating rooms (ORs), expand the cardiopulmonary department and significantly enlarge the hospital’s imaging department and associated support departments. The project will also include the expansion of an existing parking garage, new connecting pedestrian bridge and the construction of a new surface lot. Early in design, our team had to determine the functional demands the new tower would place on the existing services. Extensive research was completed to benchmark Memorial Hermann’s other campus locations to evaluate the efficiency of support service areas. Once the data had been gathered and reviewed, it became apparent that The Woodland’s Hospital support services were deficient. These benchmarking efforts helped the owner better understand the programmatic requirements of the project. This validation allowed the right -sizing of new spaces to resolve both current deficiencies and the future needs of the hospital.

The skywalk renovation includes custom artwork, fresh finishes, and a nook curated to providing an intimate space for staff to use for personal calls or just a space to escape from the hustle and bustle of the hospital adjacent. A custom, wood-look ceiling lowers the volume of the space, while a fun, bright pendant accentuates the lounge space created between phone call “pods”. Incorporation of biophilia by extending the hospital plant program into the skybridge is also an important part of the overall design as an extension of nature into the space itself.

THOUGHTFUL DESIGN patient engagement through visual stimulation

THE STATS UTMB HEALTH - FRIENDSWOOD CLINIC LOCATION: Friendswood, TX COMPLETED: In Progress PROJECT SIZE: 26,000 sf

The design is focused on emphasizing the regional identity of the confidential project location. Our team collaborated with UTMB to ensure that their vision of the future was rooted within the patient experience from both an aesthetic and functional perspective. We helped select and are now implementing this new project based upon four regional identities within their new guidelines. Taking inspiration from these four geographic areas where they serve their patients, each has a unique look and feel while sharing a common foundational design aesthetic reflecting UTMB’s values.

PROJECT TYPE: Build-out The project goals included the clinic’s premiere location to capture

UTMB is opening a new, 26,000 square foot, Class-A clinic in the Bay Area just outside of Houston, Texas. This new “clinic of the future” sets the standard for all future ambulatory clinics for the institution. and this design became known as the “finger design”. This design provides simple access to each of four clinical exam corridors that resemble a finger in the plan. This design allows for minimizing the distance each patients needs to walk while providing access from the other direction for the clinical staff. PhiloWilke and UTMB massaged a thorough program for the space to include multiple modalities: pediatric and adult primary care, urgent care, orthopedics, gastroenterology, dermatology, cardiology, pharmacy, behavioral health, social work as well as support spaces incorporating a cast room, phlebotomy, and imaging comprising EKG, Echo and X-Ray. The space will have 46 exam rooms designed universally so they can flex based on the needs of the clinic each day. Nurse stations are immediately adjacent to large team work rooms fostering collaboration between care providers. A large break room is provided for staff at the corner of the floor plan taking full advantage of windows and access to natural light. This space is designed to accommodate multiple functions but it’s most important function is to allow a space for respite and diversion. HEALTH PORTFOLIO

BUILD-OUT

UTMB leadership and the design team composed a project design concept centering on the key term, “Excursion”. An excursion is a short journey to a place of restoration. A deviation or digression from the day-to-day. Natural and linear architectural moments are married with deviations of organic and warm colors. The Patient Health Journey is influenced through intuitive wayfinding, natural colors and biophilic forms. The Employee Experience is created by a space of anticipation and joy while also allowing for moments of respite from the regular pattern of daily operations. The design team identified high impact spaces throughout the ambulatory clinic that would curate an experience for either user. A mix of warm and cool finishes with smooth and textured surfaces creates a well-balanced, natural aesthetic. Accent colors within the space combine terracotta and deep midnight blue paying homage to active space versus areas of reprieve. Soft curves are tucked in with linear, vertical and biophilic shapes support wayfinding throughout. Lighting was carefully selected and woven into the design of each space to speak back to the overall narrative. 17

PhiloWilke recently completed the new Memorial Hermann Healthcare System campus in Pearland, Texas. As the third largest city in the Gulf Coast Area and the second fastest growing in the state of Texas. Memorial Hermann chose to expand their presence to offer a full range of healthcare services and coordination of care to the surrounding community. While Memorial Herman has provided services to the area since 1998, they sought to integrate the campus more closely with their other specialty dedicated institutions. Designed and constructed as a two phase project, the campus includes a Convenient Care Center and an acute care Hospital. To accommodate the communities needs the convenient care center was opened in 2014 as a 24-hour emergency room and general care facility. RESPITE

Houston Methodist MD Dining renovation transformed the doctors’ dining and dictation area into an inviting and comfortable space to recharge. The reconfiguration resulted in a design that incorporates areas for solo work and larger group gatherings. Additionally, the use of specialty lighting, custom furniture, artwork, and updated technology provides physicians with all the necessary tools to serve their community best. The Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital leadership renovated an outdated and inefficient dining and lounge area to improve physician amenities. The design challenge was to enhance, reconfigure, and lighten the existing dark and uninviting space. Thus, creating a welcoming space that the physicians would want to spend time charting and collaborating. Since this was a non-patient space, the team could be creative with the lighting, furniture, fixtures, and finishes. Leadership was looking to elevate the look and feel, and since this was a non-public space, the team elected to use materials outside the usual campus finish standards and custom art. This made the area feel more exclusive and truly a retreat for the physicians, clinicians, and medical staff. HEALTH PORTFOLIO

RENOVATION

Houston Methodist, MD Dining project was a two-phased, highly collaborative renovation consisting of dining and dictation areas for the Doctors at the Willowbrook Hospital. As an area for nourishment and reprieve, the design needed to incorporate areas for collaboration, solo work, group gatherings, and meals. It is common for doctors to need a space to recharge after a long shift; therefore, the aesthetics were critical to the project. The team curated specialty items and worked closely with hospital leadership, furniture, lighting, and art vendors to achieve the desired look and feel. Renovations are exciting projects as unknown conditions can change the course of a project quickly. The team discovered a 12-foot tunnel under the dining floor that was building up with water during demolition. The tunnel required water mitigation and special attention to ensure a proper seal. The team was able to float the floor surface and proceed with little schedule disruption. Despite the minor challenges, this project resulted in the upgrade of amenities and comfort. The increased function and feel of the dining and dictation areas allow the Willowbrook doctors the appropriate space to decompress to best serve their community. 25

The unit’s location on the Galveston campus for the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) was due the close proximity of the Galveston National Laboratory (GNL) research facilities capable of handling BSL4 pathogens. Located on the second floor of the Emergency Department Building 64 this extensive renovation of the existing and active Emergency Department occurred across four phases of construction, allowing operations to continue. The unit’s primary goal was to deliver efficient and proper care within an environment that is safe for its patients, clinicians and staff members.
