Editor’s Foreword Well, we certainly didn’t see that at the start of the year! (although most of us did long before our government, apparently.) Four months between issues is a long old time. We’ve all had time for introspection. Sadly, many lives have been left for the worse by a situation that may largely have been avoidable. I don’t want to dwell on that at the moment – but we shouldn’t let it go. Lives have been lost, and anyone having as bad an effect outside the sphere of politics would be locked up with no doubt at all. I can only hope that the time will come that they feel the consequences of their indifference. The day before I write this, Plaid Cymru tabled a motion in Y Senedd that, in a nutshell, asked that Welsh Government seek the power for any referendum on independence to be decided on and instigated by Senedd itself. Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives predictably voted against this, although why anyone living in Wales would believe that Welsh Parliament should not possess that power is beyond me. It is certainly clear from that vote that both of those parties take their lead from across the border, and not for the sake of Wales. A recent poll stated that only 12% of people wanted things to return to ‘normal’ after lockdown ends. This is hardly surprising; I have spoken to many people who found the enforced hiatus a breath of fresh air (obviously leaving out the reason of why it was happening). I certainly include myself in that category (and I’m hardly chained to my desk day and night!). For me the past 4 months have been a bit of a personal renaissance, with a bit of this and that, bread making, rediscovering my vocal chords and picking up a paintbrush and pencils to play around with. I think its safe to say that I am entirely ready for retirement – it’s just that I’ll probably have to wait 30 years for it, if ever! That long spell of fine weather seemed to amplify the effects of less traffic. The air seemed cleaner. I was seeing more birds and animal visitors in the garden (one new tenant is holding up our garden project!). The turn in the weather seemed like a blow to the belly for many of us. It seems quite fanciful to say it, but at times it seemed almost as if nature was more than dropping hints at us. Pictures from all over the globe showed clear skies, seas and rivers with animals returning to areas they had long deserted. Meat processing plants becoming hotbeds for the spread of the virus. It would be easy to imagine Mother Nature was giving us a scolding that we are doomed to ignore. That silence, that lack of traffic noise and smell, took me back to my childhood on many days. I know I’m not the only one who appreciated it. And so, back to it. The ugly world of work poking through and shattering my renaissance!! As I write this I’m about two hours past my deadline – after only 4 months to prepare I think that’s quite admirable! Maybe this new efficiency will hang around for a bit… As always, and particularly now, feel free to get in touch by email or letter to see your messages in the mag. Maybe the next few months would be a good time to highlight some of the local heroes we have who have helped people out through lockdown. Until next time…

POWYS CHILDREN’S SUMMER SESSIONS
Activity sessions for children in Powys will be held during the summer holidays, the county council has said. Powys County Council has arranged its Children’s Summer Sessions, which will be held every weekday afternoon from Monday, July 27 to Friday, August 26. The sessions will take place at eight venues across the county and are aged for children aged five to 16. The sessions, which will run in line with Welsh Government Covid-19 guidance, will be held Monday to Friday from 1:30-4:30pm. Places will be limited so parents must book their child’s place online. The sessions will be held at Freedom Leisure Centres in Brecon, Newtown, Rhayader, Welshpool and Ystradgynlais as well Ysgol Bro Hyddgen (secondary campus), Llandrindod Wells Youth Centre and Knighton Primary School. Cllr Rachel Powell, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Thanks to our partnerships with Freedom Leisure, Activ8Kids and the Urdd, we are able to provide summer holiday activities for children in venues across the county. “For your child to attend, you must book a place online by Thursday for the following weeks sessions. “We hope the children will enjoy the creative, fun and outdoor activities, make new friends and have a great time!” Places are limited and will be allocated within Welsh Government guidance. To book a place and for more information visit https://en.powys.gov.uk/article/2025/Find-out-about-holiday-activities-in-Powys. 13

Wills and Planning for your future As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, we remain in challenging and uncertain times and the implications and repercussions of the pandemic on our future remains unclear. At Jennifer Melly law we provide a holistic service and our aim is to assist you in putting in place any legal paperwork as well as helping you to consider what you and your families’ needs may be for the future and to help you plan for whatever lies ahead. Making your Will There are still a huge number of people who have still not put wills in place and it is so important to make sure your wishes are put into effect after your days, as it will be too late to make your wishes known after you’re gone. Putting this in place during your lifetime means you can decide who receives your estate, make gifts to charities, appoint guardians for young children and decide who sorts out your affairs after your days i.e. you can choose your executors. Even for those who have prepared wills it is important to review a will regularly and as circumstances change. Powers of Attorney It is also important to consider how you are going to be looked after during your lifetime, particularly in the event of illness or accident. Lasting Powers of Attorney can be prepared in order to legally appoint a person or persons to manage your finances and make decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. If you were to lose the capacity to manage your own finances in the future and no Lasting Power of Attorney was in place then an application would need to be made to the Court of Protection to appoint someone to manage your finances for you, and this may not be the person you would have chosen yourself. These applications can be lengthy and expensive and can be avoided by planning ahead. Long Term Care Many people, at some stage will require residential or nursing home care. It is sensible to consider and plan for how your care would be paid for in future. Jennifer Melly Law can also help and advise those who are already in a care home setting on what funding they are entitled to and the cost of care. If you would like advice on any of the above matters then please contact us for further information. Our offices are based in Neath and Cardiff and we also offer home visits for those who are unable to come in to see us. Our staff are friendly and approachable and aim to put our clients at ease whilst providing a professional and expert service.

by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
After a mostly favourable Summer 2020 weather-wise so far, the final third of the season will continue the encouraging theme. Both June and July offered us chiefly settled and warm conditions, and not only that, but delivering such weather for sustained periods of time and not just a short run of days. August looks set to continue this pattern, with a probable lean towards the second half of the month presenting us with the most stability as we head into September. Expect at times some very warm, possibly hot temperatures, and the associated risk that these values bring with thunderstorm activity ensuing. After the middle part of the month, a settling down phase with dry and settled weather, and more endurable temperatures as opposed to challenging heat. Overall, a drier than average month with temperatures on or around the average. Jonathan Powell, Sunday July 12th 2020

£4M FUND LAUNCHED TO SAVE AND REBUILD COMMUNITY SPORT CLUBS
Grassroots sports clubs across Neath and Port Talbot are being urged to apply for a new fund to help them survive the coronavirus pandemic and prepare to restart their activities safely. Sport Wales has launched the £4m “Be Active Wales Fund”, made possible thanks to Welsh Government and repurposed money from the National Lottery. During the last two months, more than £600,000 of emergency funding has already been awarded by Sport Wales to help more than 300 clubs which were in immediate financial danger. From today (Tuesday, July 7th, 2020) thanks to the Be Active Wales Fund, even more community clubs and organisations can safeguard their future by applying for a grant of between £300 and £50,000. Applications can be made online at www.sport.wales/beactivewalesfund. Grassroots sports clubs and organisations at risk of folding because of the Covid-19 crisis may need funding to help pay rent, utility costs, insurances or any fixed costs they may have for facility or equipment hire. Sporting national governing bodies are providing full guidance each time the Welsh Government gives the go ahead for different forms of activity to resume, and the Be Active Wales Fund will help clubs make any adaptations needed so that activities are safe. For instance, one-way systems, hand sanitisers, online booking platforms and health and safety signs are now commonplace at golf clubs which have re-opened. Sport Wales Chief Executive Sarah Powell said: “We’re making every effort to help grassroots sport get through the current crisis. The Be Active Wales Fund will protect community clubs and organisations, and help them prepare for the sporting life alongside Covid-19. “Our clubs and groups are crucial in keeping the people of Wales active. If they don’t stay afloat or they can’t reopen safely, we can expect another crisis – that of inactivity and ill-health. We must not let that happen.” Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Carol Clement-Williams, added: “This new funding will provide a lifeline to help those clubs and organisations to not only stay afloat, but also rebuild ready for when it’s safe for activities to resume so we are advising our local grassroots sports clubs to apply for help from this fund. “Research carried out by Sport Wales suggests that the inequality gap in sports participation has intensified across Wales during lockdown, most notably among young people living in deprived areas. We certainly don’t want this worrying trend to become a habit, so we will do everything we can to play our part in ensuring that the Be Active Wales Fund reaches our communities who need it most.” Full information about the Be Active Wales Fund, including details on how to apply, can be found at www.sport.wales/beactivewalesfund Before refurbishment After refurbishment

NO UNAUTHORISED SIDE WASTE’ RULE TO BE REINTRODUCED FROM AUGUST 3RD
Neath Port Talbot Council has announced that from August 3rd, 2020 it will stop collecting unauthorised “side waste” at the kerbside. Neath Port Talbot collects up to one wheeled bin of non-recyclable waste from each household (the limit is up to three black bags in bag collection areas). Any extra waste is “side waste”. Households that recycle and still regularly produce large amounts of non-recyclable waste need to have an exemption from this restriction. So, if you present more waste in addition to your wheelie bin or more than three black bags in bag collection areas, and you are not exempt from the limit, then our crews will not collect your extra waste from August 3rd. As part of our response to the coronavirus pandemic, we closed our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) and halted the bulky waste collection service. As a result of these actions the council acknowledged that some households might have extra waste to present at the kerbside. In addition, as part of our amended service, we did not require householders to have an exemption for their extra waste and we collected extra waste presented at the kerbside. With our recycling centres now successfully re-opened, and the bulky household waste collection service available again, the need for exemptions for extra waste will be reintroduced from August 3rd, 2020. Our recycling centres are operating with covid-secure measures in place, including a booking system: please go on line for details. Our bulky household waste collection service is a chargeable service, again, there are more details available on the council’s website. The ‘no side waste’ rule is aimed at encouraging those few people who are not yet recycling to recycle more. The council checks and agrees applications for exemptions, and monitors how the exemptions are used. If residents are exempt from the limit, they will not be allowed to present anything that can be recycled in their wheeled bin or black bags. Neath Port Talbot Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering, Cllr Ted Latham, said: “Most households should be able to fit their refuse (that is waste that cannot be recycled) into their wheelie bin, especially if they are recycling as much as possible.” “We collect recycling every week and there is no limit on this. Residents can put out as much recycling as they want and ordering extra recycling kit is easy to do online on www.npt.gov.uk/ recycling . “If you live in a bag collection area, we will collect up to three black bags. “If you recycle all you can but still put out large amounts of non-recyclable waste then from August 3rd you will need to have an exemption from the side waste restriction. You can apply for an exemption online here (link to be inserted here).” Residents are asked to please remember there should be nothing in their wheelie bin or black bags that can be recycled. Cllr Latham added: “Remember, when we recover from this pandemic we will still only have one planet. Recycling helps to keep valuable resources in use.” For more information: https://www.npt.gov.uk/excesswaste 23

FOSTERING CHANGES LIVES “Hand on heart I would say it’s the best thing I have ever done and would recommend it to anybody,” said Karen. Karen became a foster carer for Powys after a neighbour passed away, so she started fostering her six-year-old child, as the father was not around. Twenty-three years later she’s still doing it and loving every minute, fostering children of all ages, providing short and long-term placements, overnight and weekend stays. “There are so many ways you can help a child who needs a home, even if it’s only giving them a comforting home for a couple days. It so rewarding knowing that you are helping a child who can’t be with their own family.” As a foster carer, Karen receives continued support from Powys County Council through training, support groups, out of hours and emergency support. “All foster carers get support from the fostering team,” said Karen. There is a great network with other foster carers and there’s always someone at the end of a phone.” Although she has two children of her own, it has never stopped her fostering. “The long-term effect on our family has been amazing; it enriches your life so much. We have had such an amazing time with all the children coming into our home. It can be challenging at times, but the smiles and laughter outweigh all of that!” Karen adds, “I am passionate about helping children in my community and giving them good childhood memories. I want them to have memories like I had as a child. “If you are thinking of fostering, just pick up the phone and find out more. It really is the most rewarding thing I have done.”
Why foster with Powys County Council? By fostering with us, you will be providing local children with a caring home, even it’s over a weekend or long term, by picking up the phone and enquiring you could make a life changing difference to children and young people in Powys. For more information about becoming a foster carer or a supported lodgings provider contact us today: 0800 22 30 627, www.powys.gov.uk/fostering, fostering@powys.gov.uk 39
EDITOR’S FOREWORD - APRIL
This was written for the April magazine. I though it would be interesting to see how it relates to where we are today.
LANGUAGE IS IMPORTANT “They left the dog tied up out in the garden and it was killed by the freezing temperature”. “He locked his nan outside during the storm, eventually the cold and rain killed her”. “They left the baby unattended in the bath and the water killed him”. There is a reason that these sentences look odd. It’s because of the absence of blame. Blame isn’t always useful but, in the instances above, we would ordinarily use blame to show that these were not mere acts of nature, but were the result of neglect and indifference on the part of the people responsible for caring for the unfortunate victims. Our government, supported by a fawning media filled with cohorts, are seeking to apply the same treatment to their reporting, and therefore, our understanding of what is happening in our country during this pandemic. We MUST NOT allow them to get away with this! Despite all of their continuing lies, their actions during this pandemic have not been based on the science. You can barely hear the drowned-out voices of scientists protesting at the very idea that this is the case, but they are there. Slowly, but surely, the government will remove themselves from the cause of the devastating loss of life that is ripping through our island. It’s already begun; Priti Patel’s refusal to apologise for failings (or even acknowledge that there have been failings) show what the truth is behind the thinking in the Conservative cabinet. The suggestion of Matt Hancock that NHS staff are being too cavalier with PPE supplies, the list will grow and it will chip away at the public consciousness, helped on by a willing media, until the public absolve the government of all responsibility. It’s happening already with some. And they’ve done it before, with Brexit. Cummings will be telling the cabinet that this is just nature taking its course. That is the rationale that they’ll use to keep any glimmer of conscience at bay. But it’s not true. It is their responsibility to act in our interests. Sadly, they’ve managed to fool the public into thinking – bizarrely – that they have our interests at heart for a decade. If you think that this is not political, or that any of the decisions they are making are not political, then I’m sorry to tell you that you’re a fool. This is the very essence of what politics is; the trust you place in others to do what you think is right on your behalf. Now IS the time for politics. Now IS NOT the time for indignation that the choices you made and the votes you cast are now so blatantly and obviously failing you on every level. Don’t wallow in shame or self-pity; get on board and create hell that we are now in the hands of a class of people with a psychopathic regard to the welfare of the nation. This is, as it has always been, class war. The government, as determined as ever to numb people’s sensibilities with comparisons of the chippy ‘Blitz Spirit’, are telling us that we’re fighting the good fight, and that our sacrifices are appreciated. So let’s continue their wartime analogy with a more accurate version… This is not the blitz; it is World War 1. Our fight is not a stand against an evil tyranny, but a senseless slaughter at the whim of some quarrelling cousins. Our ‘front line’ are being asked to fight while having their weapons and armour kept from them, and they are paying with their lives. Cummings’ desires have been stated as wanting to forge a new order from the ashes of chaos; nature provided his opportunity, and the government is sitting back and watching it happen. Look to Hungary for their next moves (a population a little ahead of us in the desensitisation of political outrage). It is coming. They are too clever to emblazon themselves with symbols and insignia but know this of them; we have seen their like before.
40
At the very least, do not allow yourselves to doubt that such things can happen here. It is happening now, all around us, and has been for the last decade.

BRITS ARE A NATION OF SNIFF TESTERS
A staggering 30 million of us admit to having out of date food in our fridge. Alarmingly, although half of us say we would never serve a guest food that is out of date, that means that there are still around 1.2 million potential hosts in Britain who would secretly scrape off the mouldy parts and then serve up the rest. According to new research, three quarters of us would still eat food that was past its use by date, happy to trust our nose and judgement with a quick “sniff test”.
If you’re going round to your neighbours for a dinner party this weekend you’d better beware as two thirds of Brits think that the use by date is just a guide. Old cheese tops the list for the average Brit as the worst offender but the top 10 out of date chilled items in the UK today are: * Cheese * Jar of curry sauce * Yogurt * Eggs * Milk * Open can of beans * Fruit * Bread * Meat * Fish Behind closed doors, over a quarter of us cite fridge habits as the cause of arguments with our housemates or partner. Topics that really tick us off include how things are stored, like a half eaten tin of beans left uncovered. In fact, one in 10 Brits say they argue with their partner on whether things should be refrigerated, such as eggs, and with over half of people wrongly believing eggs have to be kept in the fridge, while more than 40 per cent think that jam, marmalade, honey and ketchup should be kept cooled, despite being fine to be stored at room temperature. Top 10 things Brits refrigerate unnecessarily: 1. Eggs 2. Jam/marmalade 3. Honey 4. Onions 5. Garlic 6. Bread 7. Potatoes 8. Bananas 47
9. Dried Fruit 10. Tinned vegetables Confirming that the contents of our fridges can speak volumes, when it comes to our friends one fifth of Britons admitted they judge others’ lifestyle choices by the contents of their fridge. Indeed, one in eight admitted they would be unlikely to go to a friend’s house for dinner if their fridge was messy or dirty and more men than women agreed that if they spotted budget brands in the fridge they would think that their friend was “tight”. Teresa Arbuckle of Beko Plc, who carried out the poll, says: “Our survey reveals that we are nation who judge each other on the contents of our chiller - the fridge is the new status symbol. “So it is surprising to learn that so many of us are running on empty where our food is concerned, almost a third of people saying their fridge usually contains the bare minimum to get them through the week.” Beko plc has enlisted the assistance of 2012 Masterchef winner Shelina Permalloo who agrees: “The rising popularity of entertaining at home, particularly with the summer of sporting events and autumn of new talent shows on TV, friends and neighbours will have plenty of opportunity to peep in your fridge. “It is important to keep your fridge stocked up and well maintained not only to avoid embarrassing questions from house guests, but also to make sure ourselves and our families aren’t being exposed to any health risks. And as any host will tell you, cooking from scratch and home entertaining is an easy way to impress your guests - and lots of fun too!”

You are determined to make a good impression and cultivate allies in your new ventures. Mercury transits your sign after the 20th of this month and your skills to negotiate will assist you in achieving many of your goals. Changes to plans for a break or a sudden opportunity to go somewhere will surprise you in a good way. Libra : Mars causes friction in your zone of close partnerships. As summer is now here , and things begin to return to something a little closer to normal, many are spending some time tending to family memorials. I thought I would touch a little on the upkeep and maintenance of memorials. Lettering, if cut into granite, is most often finished in silver or gold leaf. Never be tempted to scratch or wipe into the letters, as this could damge the leaf or paint. If your letters are in lead, whether raised or flush, speak to a memorial mason before attempting to clean them. Highly polished granite is easily cleaned with some soapy water or glass cleaner. Seek advice for the specific memorial before attempting to clean marble, Forest of Dean or rustic granite, and if any doubt ask a memorial mason.

NEATH PORT TALBOT’S LOCKDOWN CREATIVITY UNVEILED IN NEW EXHIBITION An online exhibition which will also take place at the Queen Street Gallery in Neath next month showcases the ‘creativity of lockdown’ by the people of Neath Port Talbot. First time curator Anna Hale put together the exhibition after asking on social media for examples of photographs, paintings and other art carried out by Neath Port Talbot residents during the coronavirus lockdown period. The exhibition is online now and a physical version will be shown at the Queen Street Gallery in Neath from August 1st – 29th with a percentage of any sales going to the RSPCA’s Llys Nini centre in Swansea. Anna Hale said: “This is the first time I have curated an exhibition and I just wanted to celebrate and show how people turned to being creative during lockdown. “I advertised the exhibition through social media and received artworks from children, artists, amateur artists and people who just found art helped them through lockdown.” The online exhibition can be found at: https://ahpottery6.wixsite.com/lockdownartwork-quee/gallery The artworks are many and varied and include “Give me a kiss” – a stunning photograph of a horse encountered by Jeff Griffiths on a visit to Cilybebyll in the Swansea Valley. 59
Steven Evans painted “A misty, damp day at Brombil Reservoir”. He explained: ”I have lived in Port Talbot all my life and paint mostly scenes around my area, mainly from my own photos and sketches. I enjoy painting landscapes, occasionally portraits and pet portraits. Normally I look for unusual scenes or something unexpected working in oils, acrylics or watercolours which I find more spontaneous and free.” Richard Parfitt created “Fallen, chopped logs” – faces painted on the ends of tree logs. He said: “I’ve done over 40 ‘pieces’ since lockdown began. All are on fallen/ chopped logs in Seven Sisters. “
60
Geraldine Baker painted “Company of sheep”. She said: “I live in the Rhyddings in Neath. This image was painted with soft pastel in the first weeks of the lockdown. I was inspired by daily walks in the Gilfach area. I hope to convey the intense blue of the post lockdown skies and a sense of solitude.” https://ahpottery6.wixsite.com/lockdownartwork-quee/gallery
