Editor’s Foreword DEAR SANTA, FOR THIS ELECTION I WANT... Well… something is actually happening!! A general election, no less. I have to admit that I’m a torn voter at the moment and so, now that we’re finally here, I don’t feel able to promote any one party to you. So I thought, seeing as they have had the power for 9 years, I’d just refresh all your memories of their track record. Food Bank usage has grown over 1000% since the Conservatives came to power. Despite claiming that austerity would ‘fix’ the national debt, they have doubled it to almost 2 trillion pounds. We are now one of the worst performing economies in the world. Over 120,000 deaths have been attributed as resulting from austerity measures. The Conservatives gave us Brexit, which has marred British politics and sowed anger and division throughout the UK. As well as being found guilty of election fraud as a party, there are individual cases of Conservative members being found guilty of election fraud too. The Conservatives are accepting money from wealthy Russian oligarchs with links to the Kremlin, and are refusing to publish a report that highlights the extent of this and of Russian involvement in the referendum. The Conservatives are overseeing the piecemeal breaking of the NHS (in England) sector by sector, with over £9 billion of the NHS budget now going to private providers. It is also likely that they want to allow US drug firms the opportunity to hike drug prices for the NHS after discussions were uncovered as having taken place. Boris Johnson is proven a serial liar, he even casually tells small, unimportant lies to people he meets during PR events. The Conservatives have brought politics and journalism into disrepute, allowing and normalising the proliferation of lies and dishonesty to confuse and disarm the electorate. The Conservatives believe that we are all stupid, and are here for them to take advantage of. The Conservatives have already started referring to Wales as ‘West Britain’. There, I feel better after that! So I’m not going to tell you who to vote for, just vote for anyone but the Conservatives. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks we could be having a happy and HOPEFUL Christmas at last! Have a very Merry Christmas everyone!

GREEN WASTE COLLECTIONS ENDING SOON Powys residents are being reminded that the county council’s new garden waste collection service ends for the winter in November. The service, which was launched by the county council’s recycling and waste service in April, introduced a fortnightly paid for service collecting garden waste directly from households. Nearly 8,500 households have subscribed to the £35 service this year receiving an additional 240-litre or 120-litre wheeled bin for garden waste. The last fortnightly kerbside collection will be on the 22nd November and then restart in March 2020. Corporate Director for Environment Nigel Brinn said: “I’m delighted with the success of our new garden waste collection service. We would like to thank those who subscribed during the year and I hope they enjoyed the benefits of having their garden waste collected from their doorstep and will sign up again for 2020. “The collection service meant that households didn’t have to get their cars dirty by filling them up with grass cuttings. It has also been good for the environment with residents spending less money on fuel and reducing car journeys to waste collection points.” Residents who want to join the service for 2020 don’t have long to wait until the scheme reopens and have the added bonus of no price increase for the coming year. You can re-subscribe from January with residents asked to visit www.powys.gov.uk/ gardenwaste for details or call 01597 827465.

FOR JANUARY 2019

Photograph by Jeanine Bishopp. If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to phil@communitymag.co.uk

by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman

After a fairly lenient December, January won't be as kind with regards to the weather although not as potentially harsh as it could be, with that attribute possibly reserved for February. Expect a mix throughout January as low and high pressure systems jostle for dominance, neither one providing a deciding blow to the other. The upshot is that whereas there will be wintry incursions with sleet and snow, an elongated passage of severely cold winter weather looks unlikely, that particular scenario most probably set to fall upon regions much further north than our location. In the mix some sharp frosts, but also milder and wetter interludes. As with recent years, it may well be left to February to produce the sting in winter's tale. Rainfall is expected to be above the average with temperatures also above average. Jonathan Powell, Tuesday, December 12th 2019

ANNUAL 5 MILE BOXING DAY RACE

Since 1986 this 5 mile race has attracted runners from all over the British Isles and occasionally further afield to the small town of Glynneath. The “GLYNNEATH FIVE BOXING DAY RACE” attracted 465 runners last year, most of them “FUN RUNNERS”. The “ELITE” element is always present and the record time of 23 minutes 49 seconds, set up by KRIS JONES (SWANSEA HARRIERS) illustrates this. During the last few years the elite runners of Swansea Harriers have dominated the race. They are trained by the outstanding Elite Coach – GEORGE EDWARDS. The race is started by local celebrity MAX BOYCE in his own unique way. Race organiser, ARTHUR PHILLIPS, is expecting a record turnout. Each year, more and more absolute are using the race as a starting point. It is also a very good course, slightly undulating, for fast times, for club and elite runners. ENERGY SAVING LIGHTS SUBJECTED TO VANDALILSM & THEFT Neath Port Talbot Council and South Wales Police are looking for thieves who vandalised and stole batteries plus a solar panel from three trial solar lighting columns. The attacks on the experimental energy saving lighting columns were discovered at Helios Drive on the Baglan Energy Park on Wednesday, November 6th. It is understood the theft and vandalism took place recently, and certainly over the past few weeks. One of the metal lighting columns was cut off “at the neck” and batteries were stripped from storage boxes on all three lighting columns while a solar panel was also cut off and taken away. A Council spokesman said: “It’s very disappointing to say the least to see these trial solar lighting columns broken up in this way. They were intended to save money and help the environment but our evaluation of them has been stopped and we will have to incur costs.” The Council and South Wales Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the attacks or seen anyone acting suspiciously around the lighting columns recently. Anyone with information about this should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence: 1900409403

Sore throat? The pharmacist

38

Got a really sore throat? Think you need a prescription? Before ringing for a GP appointment, check out the 22 pharmacists in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot who can now give you antibiotics for sore throats caused by a bacterial infection. The pharmacies (listed below) are offering an as-you-wait swab test which determines immediately if your sore throat is caused by a strep infection. If it is, they can give you antibiotics there and then. If it’s not, then antibiotics won’t help, and you’ll be offered paracetamol or ibuprofen instead. The 22 pharmacies are the first in the Swansea Bay University Health Board area to offer the new service from 1st December, but more will be coming on board in the following months. The service is free and no appointment is necessary. The pharmacists have had extra training to offer the new service, which is designed to make it easier for people to get quick and effective care for a common, but very uncomfortable condition. It also means that GPs’ time which was spent seeing patients with sore throats every day can now be spent with other patients - who might have more complex health needs - instead. And another important benefit is that it prevents antibiotics being prescribed unnecessarily. GPs don’t have access to instant testing, so traditionally have prescribed antibiotics based on symptoms alone, rather than checking the type of bug causing it. This has meant sore throats caused by viruses, rather than bacteria, have been inappropriately treated with antibiotics. Not only is this pointless - as antibiotics don’t work against viruses - but it increases the serious worldwide problem of antibiotic resistance, where over-use of antibiotics means more and more are losing the ability to fight infections. Taking antibiotics you don’t need isn’t good for you generally either, as they can lead to upset stomachs because the healthy flora in your gut is affected by them. The new service, called the Community Pharmacy Sore Throat Test and Treat service (STTT), is expected to benefit thousands of patients a year across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. It follows successful pilots in two other health board areas in Wales (Betsi Cadwaladr and Cwm Taf UHBs). Umar Hussain, Primary Pharmacist at Lloyds Pharmacy, Baglan, said: “This new service can save a lot of time for patients. A surgery may only have an appointment free in the evening or a few days later, but here they can walk in and may only need to wait 10 to 20 minutes. “We advise people to come see us within the first 48 to 72 hours of symptoms. “The whole consultation process only takes 10 minutes or so, and that includes us asking questions, carrying out a swab test if needed and giving advice on how to treat the sore throat, including medication if required.

will see you now “Patients don’t have to take medication, but if they decide to, we can either prescribe an antibiotic – just like a GP would - where needed, or suggest other remedies that are available in the pharmacy.” Across Wales, sore throats account for about 180,000 GP consultations each year. Most are down to viruses, and get better on their own. In the pilot areas where STTT has been trialled, only 20% of cases actually needed, and were then given, antibiotics by the community pharmacists. The pharmacists are trained to pick up more serious infections too, and can refer patients to GPs if necessary. Patient response in the Cwm Taf trial area has been very positive, with 99% of the 310 patients who provided feedback saying they would choose to use their pharmacy over their GP surgery if they had a sore throat again. The new walk-in STTT service is available to people over the age of six, who are living in Wales and are listed with a Welsh GP. It is a free service, and no pre-booking is required. Your GP will be advised within 24 hours of using the service so your medical record is kept up to date. The service is available at the following community pharmacies from 1st December: Port Talbot: Lloyds Pharmacy, Shop 6 Morriston Road, Port Talbot, SA12 6TH Lloyds Pharmacy, Port Talbot resource Centre, Moor Road, SA12 7BJ Well Pharmacy, 127 Station Road, Port Talbot, SA13 1NR Williams & Wheeler Ltd, 56 Commercial Road, Taibach, SA13 1LG Neath: The Health Dispensary, 153 Windsor Road, Neath, SA11 1NU Davies Chemist Ltd, The Quays, Briton Ferry, SA11 2FP Well Pharmacy, 130 London Road, Neath, SA11 1HF D R Cecil Jones Ltd, The Vale of Neath Pharmacy, Chain Road, Glynneath, SA11 5HP Davies Chemist Ltd, Ynysfach Ave, Resolven, SA11 4LN Swansea: Lloyds Pharmacy, 62, Herbert St, Pontardawe, SA8 4ED Lloyds Pharmacy, 4, Strawberry Place, Morriston, SA6 7AG Well Pharmacy, 103 Woodfield Street, Morriston, SA6 8AS Kevin Thomas Pharmacy, 45 St Helens Road, Swansea SA1 4BB Mountain View Pharmacy, 53, Mayhill Road, Swansea, SA1 6TD Well Pharmacy, 147 Ravenhill Road, Swansea, SA5 5AH Well Pharmacy, The Beacon Centre, Swansea, SA1 8QY Well Pharmacy, 5 Dilwyn Road, Sketty, Swansea, SA2 9AQ Boots Chemist, Unit 5, Morfa Retail Park, Swansea, SA1 7BP Lloyds Pharmacy, 5-6 Gorseinon Shopping Centre, Swansea, SA4 4DJ Lloyds Pharmacy, 5 St Teilo Street, Pontardulais, SA4 8TH Well Pharmacy, 63 Alexander Road, Swansea, SA4 4NU Well Pharmacy, Mill Street, Gowerton, SA4 3ED 39

DOES MY DOG HAVE A NOISE PHOBIA? The reactive response can be so extreme that they may damage themselves, their environment, and even the people or animals around them in a frantic attempt to escape a perceived threat. Vets often see these pets at an earlier stage as their behaviour is more disruptive and stressful for all involved. More inhibited dogs may be interpreted as having milder noise phobias. It does not necessarily indicate a reduction in how afraid they are, though, just that they just show it differently. What should I do if my dog is showing these signs? - It’s important not to ignore them. As phobias worsen with time, the earlier these signs are picked up and strategies implemented, the more likely they will help, and the faster the response. Ideally, seek advice before attempting to manage the problem yourself. Some common techniques may not help, and can also delay treatment, making the problem harder to reverse. Some techniques may even worsen the problem. We can advise and direct you to reliable resources, and most importantly check that there are no medical problems contributing to your dog’s signs. Chronic pain, senility, and certain medical conditions may all cause similar behavioural changes. What can I do? - Prevention is always best. CD programmes such as ‘Sounds Sociable’ help acclimatise puppies to a range of sounds that they are likely to encounter in the domestic environment. This may reduce the chance of them becoming noise phobic. Although designed for puppies, these programmes can be used throughout life to maintain acclimatisation. If signs have already progressed then our vets may recommend behavioural therapy, or suggest referral to a behaviour specialist. Behavioural therapy involves a technique called ‘desensitisation and counterconditioning’. Over time, your pet is exposed to a controlled increase in sound levels using a specialised programme like ‘Sounds Scary’, eventually getting to the point where loud noises are tolerated. At this point, counterconditioning is implemented, using treats and positive reinforcement alongside the sounds to associate them with positive memories. Over time, it teaches your pet that loud noises are nothing to be afraid of. It takes several weeks so is unsuitable when a rapid response is needed. Behavioural modification can be frustrating and time consuming but studies show more than 90% of dogs treated with Sounds Scary showed a significant improvement after 8 weeks, although some dogs will take much longer. A pheromone (a chemical released by animals, used for communication) called dog appeasing pheromone has been synthetically developed in the form of plug- in diffusers, collars, sprays and tablets. This pheromone is reported to send calming signals. The Sounds Scary programme, when used in combination with this pheromone, leads to a significant reduction in anxiety during firework exposure. For severe phobias, when even low noise levels initiate fear, medications to reduce anxiety may be prescribed by our vets to aid the process initially, or to get over events such as bonfire night. However, they are no quick fixes and medication is rarely a long- term solution. Simple sedatives are not useful as they don’t reduce fear, just the ability to respond. This will make the problem worse in the long run, and so more sophisticated drugs called “anxiolytics” are now preferred. Some natural alternatives are available as well, so speak to our vets about the options. Building a den that your dog always has access to and enjoys is very helpful. In the run up to known dates, this may help your dog cope. Although prevention is always best, some last minute tips for the next big event, New Year ’ s Eve, include: • feeding a high carbohydrate meal, inducing drowsiness before dusk. • taking your dog for a long, tiring walk well before fireworks are due to begin.

If you get anxious or comfort your pet more, this may give signals that fear is justified, worsening the situation. Never punish pets for fear- related behaviour such as vocalisation, destructiveness or indoor toileting. Verbal punishments, using shock collars, water sprays or rattle cans will worsen the problem and should never be used. • making sure they have access to their den. • using a thundershirt. These should only be used as part of a behaviour modification strategy as currently there is no research for their effectiveness against noise phobias.

YSTRADGYNLAIS DISTRICT HERITAGE AND LANGUAGE SOCIETY

CYMDEITHAS TREFTADAETH AC IAITH ARDAL YSTRADGYNLAIS The Ystradgynlais District Heritage & Language Society is pleased to report that an interpretation panel outlining the history of the six military aircraft crashes which occurred on the Black Mountain above Craig y Nos, Glyntawe between 1939 and 1953 was unveiled at the Dan yr Ogof Caves complex at a special ceremony on 28th October 2019.

Evidence of the wreckage of Wellington bombers, a Lancaster and an American Liberator bear witness to the cost in young lives when things went horribly wrong on the mountain above Craig y Nos during that period. Twenty-four airmen from the U.K., Canada and America lost their lives in the accidents in this part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Some of the losses were due to mist and ice-covered wings, lost radio contact, miscalculations in navigation, poor visibility or engine failure. To mark the aircrew’s sacrifice, in the presence of members of the Heritage Society, military personnel and bandsmen from RAF St Athan along with members of the 1358 (Pontardawe) ATC Squadron the bilingual panel was unveiled by Squadron Leader Hefyn Jones, Chief of Staff MOD St Athan and County Councilor David Thomas Powys County Council. The panel was dedicated by Squadron Leader Stephen Lamond, the RAF Padre and Cadet Emily Pickering read bilingually a stanza of Binyon’s ‘For the Fallen’ before the ‘Last Post’ was played by a member of the RAF Band. An identical panel has also been located opposite the Dreflan housing estate in Cwmgiedd. Both panels have been located as close as possible to the sites of the two memorial first aid kiosks erected in 1940 by Ystradgynlais Rural District Council at the request of Hamble Air Services, Southampton from a £100 grant by the Company in 1939 to thank the villagers for their assistance in rescuing the personnel of the first recorded crash that of the Anson L9149 in January 1939 which resulted in the loss of two airmen. The kiosks, resembling a telephone kiosk’s dimensions, were demolished in the 1970s. The Society acknowledges the assistance obtained from the Tesco Bags of Help programme, Ystradgynlais Town Council, Powys C.C. and the management of Dan yr Ogof Caves in this project together with the sum raised by the Society’s members. 49

Hello everyone, I hope you have all enjoyed the Christmas holidays and are ready to face the year ahead. the process we follow.

We have a number of additional inscriptions to complete in January and it may be worth talking a little bit about

Often, when we are asked to remove a memorial from another mason, it will not meet the current standards laid down in British Standard 8415. If this is the case we have to make the necessary changes in order to comply with industry standards. We will not compromise on this point. We have often been asked to put a memorial back as it is and the answer is always no. This is because non-compliant memorials are not proven to be safe and so if we fix a non-compliant memorial the mason’s fixer license could be removed. Luckily the changes are often relatively straight forward; they normally include re-dowelling the memorial and ensuring there is a ground anchor and a compliant foundation present in the case of lawn memorials. Remember a lawn type foundation must have a fifteen inch back to front measurement to meet the requirements of its ground anchor. These changes are necessary to meet the minimum standard. If you would like to discuss these or any other issues regarding a memorial please call for a chat. Finally, everyone here at Vale Memorials would like to wish you a peaceful and prosperous new year.
