Editor’s Foreword IF WE GET WHAT WE DESERVE, DESERVE BETTER! I’d like to thank all of you wrote and emailed with your condolences last month. It’s a very comforting feeling knowing that there are always good people around who are kind and supportive. As some of the letters are personal I’ve chosen not to publish these in the mag, but please accept my sincere gratitude for your kind thoughts. As you know, I’ve had plenty to distract me from the goings on in the political world recently and, I have to say, I’m not entirely keen on diving back in. Oh, what a release it would be to return to a level of ignorance where none of that even made a dent in your consciousness (we used to refer to that as the teenage years, but teenagers seem to be a bit more politically switched on these days, poor souls). There seems to be a never-ending queue of fairly bizarre, narcissistic characters waiting for their 5 minutes in the political spotlight. As I sit down to write this, Labour leadership hopeful Lisa Nandy has just said during an interview that, as an answer to the ‘nationalist’ problem (meaning Plaid Cymru and the SNP), Labour should ‘look to Spain’!! Surely she must be saying that out of ignorance of what has been happening with the Catalans’ quest for independence?! Even so, why is someone who is so ignorant of world affairs even being considered as a national leader? While Australia burns, a clutch of abhorrently greedy and corrupt politicians continue to deny the effect that their disastrous policies are having on their country and the planet. And Trump? Well, does anyone look at him and think anything other than “How?”? It’s easy to come to the conclusion that people who have a sensible and fair outlook on things are in the minority. It’s not true, though. It looks like that because it’s been set up to look that way. In every UK election the majority of the populace vote for left of centre parties. It’s only our deliberately unfair system that turns this into a majority for the right. It’s Labour’s own fault and downfall that they didn’t amend this when they had power, because it suited them at that point. How do we move away from a system that benefits governments for taking short term views? Can any past government deny that the forefront of almost all of their thinking is about clinging to power? We sneer at them for doing it, but if we’re really honest it’s us, the great corruptible public, that is to blame. If any of this is to change we need to change ourselves. Turn away from the opinions being given to us by a biased media. Turn away from everything that tells us we should vote to protect the interests of the wealthy. In almost every category of harmful activities, be it economical, ecological or societal, it is the very wealthiest that are doing the most damage. Class war never really went away, they just get better at telling us that losing it is for our own good. Maybe the one resolution we really need to enact this year is simple; think for ourselves.

Is it time to buy your freehold reversion? There remain many leasehold properties across Wales. Where you have owned a leasehold interest for over 2 years, it may be time to consider purchasing the freehold. Many owners may not be fully aware of the implications of having a leasehold title. As well as ground rent, there may be other costs or obligations such as requiring consent to make alterations. Cost of purchasing Freehold As well as the cost of the freehold reversion itself, it is common for the landlord to also charge the buyer for their legal and surveyors costs. This will need to be factored in to your decision when considering a purchase of the freehold. Why buy? • It will make your property more desirable and therefore easier to sell. Some leaseholders selling their property may even be asked by prospective buyers to acquire the freehold before proceeding to completion. • You will no longer be required to pay ground rent. • You may reduce the risk of breaching covenants, such as a requirement to obtain landlords consent prior to conducting any alterations. • Eliminate the risk of dealing with an obstructive freeholder or a freeholder who cannot be traced. • You can extend the term of the lease. • The cost of the freehold reversion will increase year by year. Mortgage Implications Mortgage lenders have very strict requirements when lending on a leasehold property and they may refuse to lend if there is not sufficient time left to run on a lease. For example, at the time of writing Barclays Bank would require a minimum of 25 years left to run after the end of the mortgage term. Essentially, if you required a mortgage for 25 years, there must be at least 50 years remaining on the lease. If the leasehold term falls short of this, then Barclays would not be prepared to grant a mortgage. Such implications could make it significantly more challenging to sell your leasehold property. If you are considering purchasing your freehold or for further advice on this please contact solicitor Tom Grimes who can advise you on this. Tom also deals with sales and purchases of properties and can provide you with a competitive quote.

FOR FEBRUARY 2020
Photograph: ‘Eirlys Mewn Mynwent / Snowdrops In Churchyard’ by Delyth Evans If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to phil@communitymag.co.uk
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
With a generally wet and for the most part reasonably mild winter, it would appear that in order to uphold a season of chilly, frosty, and snowy weather, the burden lies with February. In recent times, February has staged a wintry-salvo to be reckoned with but the likelihood of such a repeat performance seems low. High pressure is expected to hold significant ground during the month, with a possible continuation of this pattern into March. However, there is conflict in the modelling with a split of over a slightly wetter and milder than average month, and one that dictates a drier than average February with temperatures around the average. What is interesting about the conflict is that despite limited frost and ice activity, no model offering any great percentage touts a snowy month, so we could well be spared a severe snow event. Hello again Phil, First of all please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I never thought I’d be compelled to write twice in a row, but the idiotic letters in the January issue can’t go unanswered! Firstly the patronising and condescending letter by ‘Elmo’ is an utter farce. He claims that you are printing fake news (while failing to say where - and I defy him or anyone to find an unsubstantiated claim in your December write up), goes on to say that the Labour finance policies (which were backed by over 160 of our leading economists, by the way) “are nonsense” while neglecting to say that the Conservatives didn’t actually have a single finance policy! Then goes on to call for the scrapping of the Senedd. I can only shake my head at how this man thinks. The one that tipped me over the edge, though, was the contribution from E. Watkins. Again, he or she accuses you of lying but fails to dispute a single point from the December mag. But it gets worse, because now he or she is offended that “...you have become a “Welsh person””!!!! You can almost hear them hissing it through gritted teeth! They go on to nonsense your claim about Wales being referred to as ‘West Britain’. Well, E. Watkins, if you would like to open your eyes there are numerous newspaper websites, as well as the Government’s own, referencing the Secretary of State for Wales’ calls for Wales and the South West of England to be treated as a single economic entity, with multiple references to ‘West Britain’ and ‘Western Gateweay’. Your ignorance in this is only compounded by your statement that “some of us have promoted and used our language and culture for many years”. How little minded and mean! With this statement you are EXACTLY the type of person that puts people off learning Welsh and puts off learners from using it. You should be ashamed of your remarks - you are certainly in no position to label anyone else an embarrassment! Phil, there is a reason that these people get angry with you. They don’t have an answer to facts and they don’t like being reminded that a vote for the Conservatives is one without morality. Obviously you are doing something right - so please keep on keeping on! Mark Before refurbishment After refurbishment

New Year Thoughts 2020
What will you be doing in the coming New Year Perhaps you’ll think of helping a neighbour who has lost someone near Maybe changing your ways to be better than before Communicating, Socialising, sitting down less and walking more Thinking carefully about what you do and say and always be aware That people are just people, in a world that doesn’t seem to care Be more gracious, and respect others as well as yourself Give to charity and food banks, and look after your own health
Perhaps go to a gym, run a marathon, climbing a mountain would be good And of course eating humble pie whenever you feel that you should Diet every day, and embrace the love of family and friends Remembering to preserve our precious planet on which we all depend However, at the end of this year – will I be the only one To think it all again when its 2021 L. POETRY The Pickled Onion Jar When my mother died I gave no outward sign that I was so upset and missed her then.. Still now it doesn’t seem as if I pine apart from unexpected times, as when I see again the pickled onion jar, uncover it and smell its pungency. Odours of childhood, long forgotten, are unloosed like genies with a fragrancy that puts an extra beat into my pulse. And I recall those hours we used to share, wondering if there might be some way else to fill that too capacious stoneware jar than blindly peeling - oh our streaming eyes! We’d sniff and wish that we could mechanise. I see her now, still laughing as we cried, discovering quicker ways to do the job, or silent as we shook the hanks, untied and lifted slippery handfuls from the tub. These days I see the jars of factory-made pale imitations of those spiced shallots, steeped in acetic acid and purveyed in undistinguished glass with screw-top pots. I must confess, I do not make my own, (how idle all we daughters have become), but in this memory a seed is sown to blossom into something venturesome. My culinary aspirations swell, to pickle once again - and do it well.

FOSTERING CHANGES LIVES “Hand on heart I would say it’s the best thing I have ever done and would recommend it to anybody,” said Karen. Karen became a foster carer for Powys after a neighbour passed away, so she started fostering her six-year-old child, as the father was not around. Twenty-three years later she’s still doing it and loving every minute, fostering children of all ages, providing short and long-term placements, overnight and weekend stays. “There are so many ways you can help a child who needs a home, even if it’s only giving them a comforting home for a couple days. It so rewarding knowing that you are helping a child who can’t be with their own family.” As a foster carer, Karen receives continued support from Powys County Council through training, support groups, out of hours and emergency support. “All foster carers get support from the fostering team,” said Karen. There is a great network with other foster carers and there’s always someone at the end of a phone.” Although she has two children of her own, it has never stopped her fostering. “The long-term effect on our family has been amazing; it enriches your life so much. We have had such an amazing time with all the children coming into our home. It can be challenging at times, but the smiles and laughter outweigh all of that!” Karen adds, “I am passionate about helping children in my community and giving them good childhood memories. I want them to have memories like I had as a child. “If you are thinking of fostering, just pick up the phone and find out more. It really is the most rewarding thing I have done.”
Why foster with Powys County Council? By fostering with us, you will be providing local children with a caring home, even it’s over a weekend or long term, by picking up the phone and enquiring you could make a life changing difference to children and young people in Powys. For more information about becoming a foster carer or a supported lodgings provider contact us today: 0800 22 30 627, www.powys.gov.uk/fostering, fostering@powys.gov.uk 39
VITAL VALLEY BRIDGE REPAIR WORK COMPLETED
A 100-year-old bridge which forms a vital link between two Neath Port Talbot communities has been successfully repaired. Pontwalby Bridge in the shadow of the A465, connecting the communities of Glynneath and Pontwalby by road, needed repair work to keep it operational. Without the bridge, people in the two communities would be separated by a long diversionary route. During the £100,000 repair project, carried out for Neath Port Talbot Council by contractors Ian Davies Plant, traffic was able to use the bridge at all times thanks to a temporary traffic light system. The underside of the bridge underwent extensive concrete repairs to ensure it would be operational for generations to come. Scaffolding was set up on the bridge on October 2nd 2019, with the work going on from October 14th to December 6th with the project finally finishing with scaffold removal on December 20th, 2019. Cllr Ted Latham, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering, said: “This bridge provides a vital link between Pontwalby and Glynneath and I’m delighted this work has now been successfully completed.
40
“A bridge of this age will obviously need repairs and maintenance from time to time and I was glad we were able to keep it open while the necessary work went ahead underneath.”

CANINE HEART DISEASE
It is estimated that about 10% of dogs seen within primary veterinary practices have heart disease. Middle aged to older dogs are most at risk. Routine yearly examinations with your vet can help to detect the onset of heart disease. There are two main causes of heart disease; • Atrioventricular valvular insufficiency – a disease of the heart valves • Dilated cardiomyopathy – a disease of the heart muscle Signs of Heart Disease Early detection of heart disease is key, left too long then unfortunately management is likely to be unsuccessful. Things you may notice are; • Reduced activity levels, tiring more quickly on walks, more lethargic, depression • Increased breathing effort • Reduced appetite and weight loss • Coughing (this can also be seen with respiratory disease) • Changes in sleeping habits such as being more restless at night • Presence of a heart murmur, in severe cases you can even feel these • Elevated heart rate • Distended abdomen If you notice any of these signs then it is advisable to take your dog to your local vet Investigations of Heart Disease Initially your vet will carry out a thorough exam of your dog. They will assess heart rate, lung sounds, pulse quality, colour, demeanor and many other things. If they have any concerns then they may recommend a number of tests, which may include; • X-Rays – these are useful to assess the size of the heart, the blood vessels leaving the heart and changes to the lungs. In heart disease the heart can become very large and fluid can accumulate on the lungs causing a cloudy pattern • ECG – This provides an electrical trace of the heart and helps to check the contractility. It is particularly useful if the heart is not beating regularly • Echocardiography – This is a scan of the heart and allows the valves, heart muscle and heart chambers to be assessed

Management of Heart Disease Unfortunately we cannot cure heart disease but there are a number of medications that we can give to help quality of life and delay progression. Medications can include tablets to reduce fluid building up on the lungs and in the abdomen and also tablets to help the contractility of the heart. It is also likely that you will be advised to reduce exercise and be careful with your dog in warm weather as this will put greater strain on the dog’s heart. Regular health checks and possible repeat scans may be required. If you have any concerns then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

KRIS JONES – Record Breaker
49
Swansea Harrier, KRIS JONES ran away with the BOXING DAY RACE at Glynneath. The 5 mile course was torn apart as Kris Jones once more broke the course record. He finished in a record time of 23 minutes 43 seconds. This was his 3rd success in this race – breaking the course record each time. The winner finished over 600 metres ahead of the second placed runner. To win by such a gap is unknown in any race, in the last 30 years in South Wales. Over 400 runners entered the 33rd edition of this annual Boxing Day Race – THE GLYNNEATH 5. DOMINIC SMITH (Swansea Harriers) came home in 2nd place in his best time of 25 minutes 27 seconds. Yound Dominic achieved his best placings in a race of 400 runners. In 3rd place was JAC SMITH (Aberdare Valley A.C.) in an excellent time of 25 minutes 53 seconds. He also won the much sought after FATHER & SON TROPHY. Father – STEVEN SMITH (Aberdare Valley A.C.) came in 32nd position out of 400 runners in a fine time of 29 minutes 42 seconds. He also was runner up in the 50 plus category. Their combined time of 55 minutes 35 seconds was a course record for FATHER & SON. The Ladies Race was won by LUCY MARLAND (Cardiff AAC) in an excellent time of 28 minutes 03 seconds. Always in this first three in previous races, she this time dominated the Ladies Race, well clear of the second lady – over 500 metres clear. Although not a course record she beat the time of a previous winner HELEN JENKINS (Olympic Runner). Well done, Lucy! The 2nd Lady to finish was ALAW BEYNON (Swansea Harriers) in a fine time of 29 minutes 52 seconds. She won the race previously and has always finished in the first three in previous races. In 3rd place was LLINOS JONES (Swansea Harriers) in another great time of 31 minutes 57 seconds. She also won the over 35 Years Trophy – 6 minutes clear of the next 35 year old lady! MOTHER & SON TROPHY went to EMMA & BEN SMITH (Aberdare Valley A.C.) five minutes clear of the field. Ben was the star in 28 minutes 58 seconds. Emma kept up the good work in her first major trophy. MOTHER & DAUGHTER TROPHY went to CATHRYN & CAROLYN WILLIAMS (Port Talbot
Harriers). CATHRYN also won the FEMALE VETERAN 55 YEARS OLD TROPHY. The HUSBAND & WIFE TROPHY went to a LES CROUPIERS couple – EMYR MORGAN & JANNEKE VAN BEIJNUM. They won it in an outstanding combined time of 64 minutes 43 seconds. JANNEKE also won the over 45 Category, 5 minutes clear of her 2nd place Category Runner. Well done! The JUNIOR Section (18 years and under) was dominated by 3 outstanding runners – JOSEPH REARDON (Aberdare Valley A.C.) - 1st, SHAUN PINCH – 2nd and SEBASTIAN LEWIS (Neath Harriers) – 3rd. With sensible planning you can keep one step ahead. Leo – There is a full moon in your own sign on the 9th and you feel that a completion of a cycle can be brought to rest. Either on a personal level or a project you have been working on can come to a natural close, and you can think ahead to begin something new. This may be a relationship or something to do with work. You will be energetic and busy during the weeks ahead and feel that headway is made. Your positivity is quite infectious. Virgo – Any personal wishes, skills, endeavors all go well this month. You have unlimited resourcefulness and keep yourself very busy and very productive. With a keen eye on hitting targets and creating new ones, you are a force to be reckoned with. The new moon falls in your one to one relationship zone, and new partnerships can be formed and old ones renewed. Others are keen to help and assist you. Libra - This is a good time for you to settle things at home, as Saturn in this part of your chart helps anything that has been left pending to be cleared up. There may be issues with family and or finances that need to be looked at. The full moon falls in your friendship zone and you will want to make connections with like-minded people who go the same way as you. Renew friendships and welcome support. Scorpio – With the new moon in your zone of personal ventures and romance on the 23rd, you can expect things to get more exciting. New alliances can be formed that will help you and give you increased confidence. A busy few weeks as you take on more, giving you a good vantage point. You are very good at getting your point of view across and getting more influential with colleagues and friends.
Sagittarius – You will be very assertive for the first couple of weeks of this month and want your own way. You are probably right of course, but if others go against you, it is better to stay calm and controlled, rather than create conflict. An increased and different way of handling your daily routines will make you eager to get on with plans and make changes in this area of your life. Anything to do with health, including diet and exercise is positive. Capricorn – Jupiter is in your sign and this gives you the potential for increase and change. Opportunities come your way and you will do well to take them. Pisces – You have ideals and inspiration which don’t always match up to reality. This brings frustration and disappointment. You connect with others, giving them support when needed. Your friendship zone brings benefits due to new meetings and other people who are ready to support your plans. Make the most of new opportunities. The new moon is in your sign on the 23rd, meaning new beginnings.

Unusually for this article I want to talk about business models. Now I know what you’re thinking, “What on earth has that got to do with memorials?” Well, as it happens, quite a lot… From time to time I come across customers who either have already or are thinking about buying a memorial over the internet. Sometimes it appears that this is the kind of purchase designed for an internet sale. The prices quoted as headlines may be ridiculously low and the seller will go to any part of the country and do all the administration for you. Unfortunately this has been far from the reality for many customers right across the country. In my former role as a development officer for an industry body, I had to deal with a company who took deposits from 176 customers right across the country amounting to over £220,000. We were able put all of those people in touch with each other so that they were able to fight for compensation. This is not to imply that every internet company would act like this, but it is worth being aware that if a company has their base, say, in Lincolnshire, it is unlikely they will want to visit your memorial to touch up some gilding or make some adjustment to the line. I deal with complaints of this kind all the time. In fact it is always worth knowing who is making and installing your memorial.. is it the person who is selling you the memorial or a sub-contractor? Remember, your contract is with the seller, not the sub-contractor. Make sure the seller knows what they’re talking about! Is your memorial being made locally or in some remote location and transported to the grave? If the price is low, why? Is the memorial of the same size as existing memorials on that plot? Is the granite of sufficiently good quality? Finally, local regulations may vary from cemetery to cemetery and whenever I work in a new area I have to take some time to understand the requirements of that cemetery. Too many times I have had to deal with burial authorities, and customers, whose memorials were either fixed against the local regulations or refused entry to the cemetery! Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

COUNCIL CALLS ON COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS TO JOIN WELLBEING DIRECTORY Neath Port Talbot Council is urging community-run groups and organisations to sign up to an online directory known as Dewis Cymru. The aim of the directory is to help people to help themselves by finding activities or groups based in the local community that can support a person’s wellbeing. The directory includes information about keeping safe, being healthy, being social or advice on managing money or caring for someone. It also contains details of the support offered by national organisations such as Barnardo’s and Samaritans. Community groups can add and update their details for free via the Dewis Cymru directory. Information such as what they do, costs, opening times, directions and contact details can be all added to their individual page on the directory. Councillor Peter Richards, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Health, said: “Dewis Cymru is a key resource to help people to support themselves and each other. “With all the information held in one place, the directory makes it easier for people to find out what support services are available in their local area. This could be anything from someone looking to attend a coffee morning, a carer looking for a respite service, or someone interested in joining a running club to improve their health. “It is also a great opportunity for community organisations and groups to promote what they do and attract new members at no cost.” To search the Dewis Cymru directory or to add a community service, visit www.dewis.wales.

CLOUD ON THE HORIZON Growing up in the Swansea Valley, Kevin Lane has always been passionate about music. In his younger years he was mainly into rock and metal. In his late teens, however, he stumbled upon the psychedelic scene then, at the age of 26, found ‘Psytrance’. This is the point where Kevin’s alter-ego, the psytrance musician, ‘Cloud’, was born. “The Psytrance scene and way of life changed everything about me” said Cloud “It really blew my mind. I spent the next four years going to festivals and psytrance events and explored the worlds of psytrance and psychedelia. It really did open my eyes and I made some discoveries about myself, and eventually decided that I was going to start producing my own psytrance” Cloud spent the next year learning about music production and writing his first album, but wasn’t entirely happy with the project. He took a couple of steps back and started again, crafting his own little niche within the genre. “I became obsessive about creating a sound that was personal to me” He says, “I wanted to find a style of my own, something I could use as a base from which to build my own brand of psytrance. It’s been a real adventure for me, and now I feel like I’m truly able to express myself through my compositions. A year later Cloud became a performing DJ on the psytrance scene. Less than a year after that and he’s found himself signed to 3 record labels (Boomtic Records, Psyworld Records and Let It Out Records), has performed at both the Logic and Indigenous festivals, performed live on radio in Holland and has recently begun hosting his own Psytrance parties across the UK.
