Editor’s Foreword

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well, that’s another year gone!! I can’t claim to have had a good one, but onwards and upwards, eh? Sadly, I think we’re going to need a positive attitude this year. It seems that every second person I speak to remarks on the rising prices in the supermarkets, and even the mention of rising inflation is enough to bring a knot to the stomach of anyone who’s middle-aged or over. During a conversation with a customer recently, I remarked that rising inflation is always a factor after a period of having the Conservatives in government. He then commented that the inflation in the 70’s under Labour was far worse. He was right, of course, but there was a major difference. In the 70’s rising inflation was a problem for all western economies; oil prices tripled, affecting the cost of practically anything you could care to think about. With their wage packets worth increasingly less, the then mighty unions applied pressure to raise wages. History shows us that these demands weren’t really handled well by the government of the time, and we all remember the strikes, power cuts etc. that ensued. The rising wages only served to feed in to the inflation problem and created a vicious circle that devastated our economy. Even then, a global problem, paid for at our own doorsteps. The real difference with rising inflation under the Tories (which, to my recollection, is inevitable whenever they reach power), is that it is caused by the choices that they make; by their ideology. This is certainly the case at the moment when – agree or not with Brexit – we are all paying the price for Cameron’s little vanity project gone wrong. My real concern is for those born from the late 80’s onwards. In truth, I see little to reassure me that they are or have been equipped for genuinely hard times. Much of this falls on the older generations, of course, who – perfectly naturally and well intentioned – have required little of those generations that would teach them about hardship, priorities and values in difficult times. Equally confusing though, is that their world is significantly different from ours. Many of the things that we see as luxuries, mobile phones etc., they see as necessary. And the truth is that, in today’s world, they are probably right. Far be it from me to try and decipher the etiquette of the young! I do know that for anyone to have a chance in society they have to at least be on the same field as their peers. So let’s all gird our loins and get ready for the year ahead. I’m sure that it will ask questions of many of us, and some of us may have answers, some not. What could be a better resolution than to try and help those who need answers, rather than judge them for it? I wish you all a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous 2018, and don’t forget – that’s the order they should be in too!

ABERCRAF W.I. NOVEMBER 2017 MEETING REPORT Vice-President Mrs Vera Sexton welcomed members to the Annual General Meeting. Apologies were received from Mrs Sue Roberts and Mrs Valerie Jordan. Mrs Sexton read the Minutes of the last meeting and the Minutes of the 2016 AGM, today being the 2017 AGM. Treasurer Mrs Valerie Dalling gave her report which was proposed and seconded. It was agreed that the same person who had audited the accounts would be approached to continue as Auditor for Abercraf W.I. Mrs Ann James was proposed and seconded as the new President and Mrs Vera Sexton was re-elected as Vice President. Mrs Valerie Dalling agreed to continue as Treasurer. As Mrs Iris Lewis had decided to retire as Secretary after many years of service members were asked if they would like to carry on her good work. Unfortunately there were not any volunteers for the post so sadly and reluctantly it was decided that the group would have to close. The number of members had dropped by at least three as a result of the latest rise in the Subscription fees!!! Mrs E. Tyler stated that she would get in touch with the local school to see if they would like to take over the W.I. piano. Newly elected President Mrs. Ann James said she would get in touch with the Brecon office so that official matters could be dealt with regarding the closing of the group. A final Christmas lunch will be arranged in due course!! The remaining members enjoyed refreshments and a chat before departing the hall for home.

COUNCIL BUYS FORMER METAL BOX FACTORY TO CREATE NEW JOBS AND INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES Neath Port Talbot Council has agreed terms to purchase the 55 acre site of the former Metal Box factory in Neath to establish a new employment site with significant job creation potential. The Milland Road site was occupied for more than 70 years by the former Metal Box container factory known locally as “The Box” but is now vacant after the previous occupiers, the Crown packaging company, closed last year. At a Regeneration and Sustainable Development Board on the 8th December Councillors approved the purchase of the site. Located within an important employment zone in Neath the site has been marketed as a commercial opportunity. Purchasing the property will provide the council with a unique opportunity to protect and retain a strategically important employment site in Neath capable of delivering significant investment, floor space and job creation. Neath will play a key role as a Strategic Hub in the delivery of the Welsh Government’s ‘Our Valleys, Our Future’ plan, launched last month. The plan aims to close the employment gap between the South Wales Valleys and the rest of Wales, creating new and sustainable jobs. Purchasing the former Metal Box site will encourage inward investment and with enough space to house a wide variety of businesses and enterprises it will also enable local companies to expand and invest in accommodation not usually available within the county borough. Councillor Rob Jones, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “This purchase signifies the council’s commitment to Neath and its communities to ensure there are opportunities for job creation close to the town centre and valleys communities. This acquisition will enable the council to work with local businesses to provide expansion and growth opportunities.”GET READY FOR Lock Requests: Response Within 24 Hours!

Jennifer Melly Law and Cancer Research UK join forces to offer free Wills for the New Year Perhaps 2018 is the year to include ‘Write My Will’ on your list of New Year’s Resolutions? If so, we would be delighted to help ensure that your wishes turn into reality; and if you are aged 55 and over we can offer our will writing services free of charge through a unique partnership the firm has established with Cancer Research UK. Through this unique partnership, anyone aged 55 and over is able to make or amend their will free of charge with the help of one of our specialist will writing solicitors. We are able to provide guidance and precise wording for gifts to Cancer Research UK which can be directed towards research into types of cancer or research conducted at specific centres. Those who take up this offer will be asked to consider leaving a legacy gift to Cancer Research UK but there is no obligation to do so. In addition to funding the work of research teams based in Cardiff and Swansea, Cancer Research UK funds 14 research nurses across Wales, working alongside doctors to look after patients who are taking part in clinical trials. The charity receives no government funding for its research and relies on the generosity of people leaving gifts in their wills. Over a third of its research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer is funded through supporters leaving a legacy to the charity. Last year Cancer Research UK spent around £4 million in Wales on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research working with Cardiff University, Cardiff and Vale Health Board and Velindre NHS Trust. The research is currently focused on bowel, breast, urological and prostate cancers, as well as leukaemia. Jennifer Melly, Head of the Private Client department at the firm explained: “We all reach a stage in our lives when we look ahead and consider how best we can support our loved ones and favourite causes through provision in our will. It might be the right time for some people to add ‘write my will’ to their list of New Year’s Resolutions. It’s never too early to start planning for these things. “Through our partnership with Cancer Research UK we will be offering the services of specialist will writing solicitors to anyone aged 55 and over to ensure that their wishes are worded precisely.” Jennifer added: “We have been working closely with Cancer Research UK to offer this service for some time now. Over the years we have helped supporters of Cancer Research UK pledge gifts worth more than £350,000 to the charity. By offering our will writing services to local people free of charge we are doing our bit to help Cancer Research UK and its supporters to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment for generations to come. Writing one’s will is something many people put off doing so we are very keen to support anyone who wishes to finally get around to making a new will or amending an old one.” Clare Moore, Director of Legacies at Cancer Research UK said: “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. To improve outcomes we must continue to fund research into better preventative measures, early diagnosis and treatment. Without the money we receive from gifts in wills the progress we are making through research would be significantly slower. “We are always extremely grateful to anyone who leaves a gift in their will to Cancer Research UK. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.”

FOR JANUARY 2018

Photo: ‘Snow At Prices Row’ by Helen Scott, Dyffryn Cellwen. Taken 13/12/17 at Coelbren. If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to phil@communitymag.co.uk

by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman

January is likely to see milder air from west and the colder air from the east lock horns for dominance across South and West Wales. The east with its snow, frost, and ice, keen to show exactly what it is capable of as it did during December over higher levels, and for a time, at lower levels aswell. However, the west will be equally as keen to enforce and maintain the run of mild and wet winters that have been so characteristic of recent years, pushing back the colder air to the east for much of the month. The wintry incursion that made itself evident in December chiefly over the higher ground, may well replicate itself during the opening month of the year, and to this end, we have to be mindful of a repeat of this scenario, with once again, the possibility of snow at lower levels for a time. By the same token, jet stream positioning and Atlantic weather fronts, if allowed to bed in, could make for a wet, windy, and at times quite stormy January. January is expected to be a wetter than average month, with temperatures on or below the average.

COUNCILLORS APPROVE TOWN CENTRE RETAIL SCHEME

Neath Port Talbot councillors have given the go ahead for the next stage of the ambitious redevelopment of Neath’s town centre, which will be built on the site of the now demolished old multi-storey car park. The initial phase of the new look Neath saw the construction of a modern 600 space multi-storey car park to replace the old one together with a large Wilko store. The aim is to provide suitable space for high street retail names to complement those already in the town, like Marks and Spencer, New Look, Clarks and Next. The Council can now start work on commissioning a contractor to deliver the retail scheme and work on site is expected to start next year. Neath Port Talbot Council Leader Councillor Rob Jones said “This council is very aware of the pressures that traditional town centres are coming under from online shopping and out-of-town retail parks. We are determined to ensure that Neath continues to be an attractive destination for businesses, shoppers, residents and visitors alike. “I was chairing the planning committee when the plans for Neath’s town centre were first published and I am pleased to see the redevelopment now moving on to the next step and taking shape.” Another development due to start on site next Spring will involve the building of five to six smaller retail units with 12 apartments on the first and second floors all sited at the rear of the service yard of Neath’s Boots store. It will be delivered by Coastal Housing and will also include Water Street and Orchard Street being widened to improve pedestrian links to Neath’s Gwyn Hall, Victoria Gardens and the Bus Station. And a decision has been made to retain a much loved building on Water Street, one of Neath town centre’s oldest buildings - The Greyhound pub. Water Street, which got its name because Gnoll Brook ran through the town centre thoroughfare, once contained a number of public houses but only the Greyhound – affectionately nicknamed “The Dog” - now remains. Neath is establishing a growing reputation as a place to eat and drink and has seen significant investment from private companies and individuals in premises like Moruzzi & Co and Charlie’s Wine Bar & Grill. Further investment has also been made in the town’s former Constitutional Club and its landmark Castle Hotel, where Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton once stayed, which has now undergone an expensive refurbishment under new owners. The town’s reputation has been further enhanced by a number of highly successful annual events which add to the historic Neath September Fair - these include one of the most prestigious Food & Drink Festivals in Wales, a Real Ale & Cider Festival and the Great Guitar Gig.

SWANSEA KITCHEN SHOWROOM WINS PRESTIGIOUS ‘CHECKATRADE’ AWARD Lavine and Jen Jones of Dream Doors Swansea have just won the ‘Checkatrade’ award at the franchise’s 2017 annual conference. Although unable to attend the conference themselves, the couple were presented the award via video call by Dream Doors Director of Franchising, Bill Owen. The distinguished evening followed a day where almost 200 members of the franchise network were treated with a look at the success of the business as well as their vision for 2018. Although, the highlight of the day had to be special guest Gerald Ratner whom, infamous Dream Doors Operations Ed Brewer and for his iconic PR blunder, delivered an entertaining, yet moving speech on failure Checkatrade Founder Kevin Byrne accepted the award on behalf of Lavine and Jen and perseverance. Checkatrade is an independently run industry review website where real customers give real testimonies and scores based on reliability, tidiness, courtesy and workmanship. Dream Doors Swansea have truly earned their award with an average score of 9.87 out of 10. Lavine and Jen had this to say about their award win: “We endeavour to give all of our customers a ‘world class’ experience with a very personal touch. We take so much pride on the customer journey - from start to finish, including after sales service. We cater for every customer need/demand to enable that our customers achieve a 100% satisfaction a 100% of the time” Dream Doors is the UK’s leading replacement kitchen door franchise, offering madeto-measure replacement kitchen doors and worktops. This gives customers a kitchen makeover for the fraction of the price of a full replacement. The company has over 60,000 kitchen makeovers to their name and has won ‘Best Kitchen Supplier’ and ‘Best Money Saving Product’ in the 2017 Express Home and Living Awards. Lavine and Jen are encouraging anyone that’s interested in a kitchen facelift to get in contact for a friendly conversation. Their showroom is based at: 3 Sway Road, Morriston, Swansea. 27

Pantteg Landslip Update 08/12/2017 Borehole at Graig Y Merched Work continued in the Pantteg landslide area last month with a borehole being carried out by specialist geologists Earth Science Partnership (ESP). ESP will be working on the borehole at Graig y Merched , the road which runs off Cyfyng Road in Ystalyfera , where the owners of nine homes have been issued with Emergency Prohibition Notices (EPOs) requiring them to leave for safety reasons following a series of landslips. The latest borehole study is being done on the site of 9, Graig y Merched, which was demolished because of its dilapidated and ruinous state. Boreholes provide site-specific information that can help determine the geology and nature of the ground in an area. Owners of homes in Cyfyng Road and their representatives were given the preliminary results of a previous borehole study in Cyfyng Road showing conditions underground there at a meeting with council officials in Ystalyfera last month. Tree and vegetation clearance, drainage work, LiDAR (laser assisted surveys using drones) and the sinking of trial pits as well as boreholes to assess conditions underground have all been going on since the latest landslides began in February of this year. However, before the latest landslides, several specialist consultants have been employed to advise the council over the years regarding the landslips south west of Ystalyfera. Earth Science Partnership have been working with the council since 2015 to implement a strategy to understand the existing geological conditions better and formulated a monitoring regime for the landslip area, comprising a series of borehole installations and other survey work.

PUBLIC MEETING

28

More details are available on the public meeting over the landslips issue, which is being held at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera on January 29, 2018. Doors will open to the public at the venue at 6pm and the meeting, organised by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, will commence at 7pm. Maps, drawings, documents and other information giving details of ground conditions in the landslip area gleaned from the intensive monitoring work which has been going on there will be made available to the public before the meeting so they can familiarise themselves with the information. The January 29 date was arrived at as it would give time for the very latest and most comprehensive geological information to be available.

WORKING WITH NATURE

32

The natural environment is remarkable. It has the ability to improve air quality, reduce flood risks, supply resources and provide a home to a huge range of species. It can even benefit our health in more ways than we know. As little as 15 minutes spent walking in the woods can reduce stress levels and lower the risk of cardiovascular problems. Similarly, the more time we spend in our natural environment, the greater value we can place on it and the easier it becomes to protect it. Neath Port Talbot Council’s Countryside and Wildlife team have been actively working to improve our local environment and to raise the profile of the benefits it provides us with. Since August, 2016 we have been delivering the Working with Nature project, by engaging with local communities throughout the County Borough, raising awareness and encouraging interaction with local wild spaces. Through the Working with Nature project we aim to raise awareness of ecosystem services, improve the health of the environment, improve employment opportunities for volunteers, and provide well-being and health improvement opportunities for our participants. The response from communities has been fantastic. Over the last year we have held over 60 free events throughout NPT, including willowweaving workshops, green woodworking sessions, wildlife watching and bushcraft events. We have had a whopping 381 people getting involved and enjoying spending time in their wild spaces. One of our regulars had this to say about the sessions ‘My wellbeing and mindfulness has increased immensely. It is refreshing to work with nature and to work at a pace that old crafts demand – no rushing or quick fixes.’ Alongside engagement events, we have been running regular volunteering days, offering the chance for communities to learn about and participate in habitat management in their own local wild spaces. Our volunteers have been invaluable in improving access, developing woodland classrooms and dealing with invasive non-native species such as Japanese Knotweed and Rhododendron. The outcome for the project is to develop value, understanding and inspiration within communities for their local wild spaces, whilst encouraging our participants to enjoy the benefits the great outdoors provides for us. Whether actively managing sites, or enjoying making use of the sites, we will all be working towards the same goal; conservation and value for the natural environment! If you want to get involved with any of our activities and volunteer days, like and follow our Facebook page WorkingWithNatureNPT or drop an email to n.hinds@ npt.gov.uk to be added to our mailing list. Working with Nature is a three year project where funding is provided through RDP LEADER, funding for Rural Communities in Wales under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), Welsh Government Single Revenue Grant, Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council and 3 Community Councils: Dyffryn Clydach CC, Onllwyn CC and Pontardawe Town Council.

RNIB CYMRU SUPPORTS PEOPLE WITH SENSORY LOSS TO CLAIM £13.5 MILLION IN UNCLAIMED BENEFITS, SUPPORTED BY THE BIG LOTTERY FUND RNIB Cymru’s Rights, Advice and Information Service (RAISE) is a specialist welfare benefits and welfare rights service for people with sensory loss across Wales who face poverty and social exclusion. The Big Lottery Fund provided three years’ funding of almost a million pounds enabling RNIB Cymru, in partnership with Action on Hearing Loss Cymru and the sensory loss sector in Wales, to establish RAISE and address the barriers faced by people with sensory loss in Wales when claiming their benefit entitlement. It is estimated that, by the end of the project in December 2017, £13.5 million will have been secured in unclaimed benefits. Ceri Jackson, Director of RNIB Cymru said, “This service has made a huge difference to the lives of people with sensory loss in Wales. Welfare Reform and cuts to services across the UK have resulted in people with sensory loss facing significant financial challenges. Customers tell us that receiving their correct benefit entitlement, and being financially better off, increases their independence and physical and emotional wellbeing.” Rebecca Woolley, Director for Action on Hearing Loss Cymru said, “We know that many people with sensory loss do not claim the welfare benefits they are entitled to because of difficulties in the process, lack of awareness, lack of accessibility and fear of being labelled. RAISE has shown that these barriers can be overcome by providing a service and information which meets customers communication needs. such as large print, audio, email, Braille, British Sign Language (BSL), Skype, Facetime and text and by providing support to navigate the complexities of the Welfare benefits system.”

In the UK almost 60% of dogs and 40% of cats are either overweight or obese. Whilst very occasionally, metabolic disorders can result in our pets becoming overweight, in most cases the problem is a result of overfeeding coupled with too little exercise. Obesity is the most prevalent form of malnutrition seen in veterinary practices. Although our pets may look cuddly and content, being overweight is a danger to their wellbeing and can lead to or exacerbate certain urinary, metabolic, orthopaedic, cardiovascular and neoplastic diseases. (Cats that are overweight are 4x more likely to develop diabetes mellitus!) Ultimately, weight problems can lead to a shortened life expectancy and a reduced quality of life. part of the problem is that we no longer know what ‘normal’ is as the shape and size of our pets vary dramatically even within the same breed now so it isn’t practical to focus solely on the number shown on the scale anymore – we tend to follow a body condition scoring system in order to determine if our pets are over or even underweight. A body condition score of 5 is ideal. We should be able to feel our pets ribs under a small layer of fat (without having to press too firmly!), a clear waist and abdominal tuck should be seen when viewed from above and the side. One point either side of 5 is equivalent to being 10% over or underweight! In order for successful weight loss to occur, it is important that everyone in the family is on board, it can be very frustrating when you spend time weighing out your pets daily food allowance, resist giving any treats and spend money on specific weight loss diets and see no progress – then finding out that other family members have been feeding extras! It is very important that any weight loss is achieved with a diet that provides the correct balance of nutrients that your pet needs, if you were to simply reduce the amount of their usual food for each meal, this would also reduce the amount of nutrients they receive which could result in deficiencies and further health problems. Tips: The use of light beams for cats to chase will increase their exercise– this should always end on a toy that they can pounce on, satisfying their hunting instinct and prevents frustration. Always weigh out your pets food rather than using a measuring cup – the difference between what is measured out each meal can be as much as 15 grams! This soon mounts up through the week! Weigh out your pets daily food allowance in the morning, put this into a container and use this for feeding/treating your pet throughout the day, this way you are less likely to overfeed. Ditch the food bowl altogether in favour of puzzle feeders – this encourages movement and provides mental stimulation especially while you are not home. Feed your pet at different heights, change the location of the bowl (top of stairs) to encourage exercise or feed on worktops/windowsills for cats requiring them to jump to get their food. Encourage off lead play and retrieving games. Instead of cheese/ham/dog treats – use some of your pet’s daily food allowance as ‘treats’ or even some raw vegetables such as carrots. If you do treat your pet –reduce their main meal portions for that day to compensate Rotate toys every 2-3 days (especially for cats) to keep them interested in play as a form of exercise Choose a diet specifically designed for weight loss Don’t feel guilty! Many owners will avoid taking their dog for a walk because they only have a short amount of time to avoid ‘disappointing’ them – a few 5-10 min walks a day is better than nothing at all Opening Hours Weigh and body condition score your pet regularly, Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 18.00pm measure your pet around their neck, chest and and take frequent pictures so you can see the Saturday: 9.00am - 13.00pm abdomen progress you are making!

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU? At least half of us will have made resolutions this new year, despite the stigma that seems to have attached to the practice. Across the globe history sees the tradition of using the new year to make promises of positive change. Indeed, the start of a new year seems the perfect time to make that change; a focus point, a fresh page. Yet, by February many of us have already relapsed. The gym card lies in the drawer, barely used. The cigarette lighter has been retrieved from the back of the same drawer. Health and diet plans have gone out the window, and as for travelling the world? Once the holidays ended, we conveniently forgot those formidable travel plans. But, there is no point dwelling on why we might get it wrong. We’re really just interested in how to get it right. Psychologists have been studying the phenomenon of the New Year’s Resolution for decades, and have come up with five great strategies for resolution success: 1) Small Steps It sounds obvious, but make resolutions that you can keep. If you can’t realistically fit in seven trips to the gym in a week, don’t schedule it. If your goal is simply to use your gym membership once a week you are much more likely to achieve it. More importantly, you won’t see your resolution as a punishment. The same goes for healthy eating. The subconscious is much more willing to accept a decision to switch crisps and chocolate for a healthy snack than the decision to go on a major “diet”. 2) One Goal at a Time With the advent of a new year it can be easy to get carried away. One major reason why people fail at resolutions is because they take on too much in one go. Changing an unhealthy behaviour takes time. Pick one goal and put all your Resolution focus on that. Remember, you can always add more later; resolutions aren’t just for the New Year! If you successfully achieve the one goal you have set yourself, you will have more confidence to tackle any future goals. 3) Celebrate Successes Don’t wait until your goal is finally completed to celebrate. Every milestone should be acknowledged. You’ll feel better and have a greater sense of progress. However, be careful how you choose to celebrate. An all-you-can eat buffet is no reward for weight loss. Try and think of a treat that has nothing to do with your resolution. Always fancied archery? Book yourself a class. 4) Focus Your Thinking Changing habits actually requires new neural pathways in the brain to be formed. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds. As you change your thought patterns and behaviours new pathways will be created. Don’t get me wrong, I know that changing your thinking about an habitual behaviour is difficult. But the simple process of thinking through your strategy and visualising new, positive habits will help lay the foundations of change. 5) Accept Support Share your experiences with friends and family. Knowing that others have gone through the same struggles helps. Accept support from those around you. Your resolutions will cause stress. The greater your support network, the greater your ability to manage that stress. Don’t dismiss the idea of professional help. Be it a psychologist, health coach or GP, the right person can help you strategize and make your goals obtainable. Remember: “What is not started today is never finished tomorrow.” Johanne Wolfgang von Goethe

Christmas is almost upon us so before we put work to one side for a while in favor of spending time with family and friends, I thought I would say something about the things we have been doing in the last part of the year.

As is always the case we train constantly, there are always new ways of doing things and we like to keep up to date with new innovations. I have recently taken part in a consultation with the British Standard committee as there are changes proposed to the standard (8415) which will impact how memorials are fixed. It goes without saying that one of our core skills is letter carving and we have had a variety of interesting projects over the past year. I have several people ask me over the last year about repairing flush lead lettering in marble; whilst it is possible to re-lead an inscription, success depends on the condition of the marble. If the marble has degraded then the shape of the letter is degraded and it is at this point it starts to become uneconomic to rectify. I will write more on this subject in the New Year.

YSGOL MAESYDDERWEN NEWS House of Lords Visit

52

On 14th November 2017, we had the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament to gain an insight into the workings of our Government. We were graciously allowed to spend the afternoon with Lord Brooke of Alverthorpe, who gave us a comprehensive tour of the House of Lords. Firstly, we were shown the extravagant artwork and architecture, which is an integral part of our British heritage. The buildings are, of course, officially a palace and remain to this day under the jurisdiction of The Queen. The ‘Palace of Westminster’ certainly lives up to its name, with a huge array of breath-taking art and gold leaf ceilings and walls, bursting with symbolism and wealth. This was a great chance to further our knowledge on the history of our country. Following the tour, we were allowed into the debating chambers of Parliament. We watched the opening ceremony of the House of Lords as the mace accompanied the Lord Speaker into the Chamber and was placed on the Woolsack (the Woolsack itself symbolic of the wealth that founded the British Empire). We observed a series of oral debates in the House of Lords, giving us first hand experience of what is seen on television. We then moved into the House of Commons gallery where we had the chance to observe a debate on the contentious topic of Brexit. This was a lively and often humorous debate, with M.P.s such as Frank Field, Hillary Benn and Kenneth Clark contributing passionately on the topic of the country’s leaving date. Apart from this, we were greatly excited to see notable and famous political figures, such as Lord Alan Sugar, Jacob ReesMogg and Lord Menzies Campbell. Above all however, we were very privileged to spend the day with a Lord who has sat for 20 years and made great strides in the fields of mental health and substance abuse. In the company of Lord Brooke, we spent time at Westminster Hall and were fortunate to acquire access into the Chapel of St. Mary undercroft. We were able to stand in the broom cupboard where Emily Davison spent the night of the 1911 census and see the plaque that Tony Benn installed to commemorate the fact! To round off the day, we stood on the terrace overlooking the Thames, saw the modern offices of Portcullis House and were treated to tea and scones at the House of Lords tearoom. What a day! We are extremely grateful to the WHSI for presenting us with this unforgettable opportunity and we extend our thanks to Lord Brooke for his hospitality and for giving us a taste for British politics. We both aspire to one day also be in a position to have such a positive influence on society and have our say. Many thanks. Daniel Edwards and Anya Welch Ysgol Maesydderwen

ANNUAL DINNER FOR CARDIAC GROUP

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Patrons Group held its annual Dinner Dance at the Manor Park Country House, Clydach, on 25 November 2017. Cardiac Surgeon Aprim Youhana spoke at the event, and he said that he recognised the tremendous work of the Cardiac Rehab Unit in getting cardiac patients from a place often of danger and apprehension back to their normal lives. He also thanked everyone for coming to this function and giving so generously to the fund-raising Group. Cardiologist Dr. Mark Anderson also echoed his huge appreciation of the work of the Unit in helping patients. He remarked on the fact that this year was the 20th anniversary of the opening of Morriston Hospital’s Cardiac Centre. Its first procedure was on 1st of October 1997 - and the doors had not closed since then. He paid tribute to the fantastic nurses and junior doctors in the Centre and evoked laughter when he suggested that one of the many Raffle prizes of the evening could have been a parking space at Morriston Hospital! Incidentally, £978 was raised on the night from the Raffle and the traditional Heads & Tails. Specialist Cardiac Physiotherapist Liz Hocking thanked all the fundraisers throughout the year picking a few examples of relatives of former patients, and others, who had raised funds for Cardiac Rehab: Fay Watkins’ husband Steven survived a heart attack and she felt that her whole life had fallen apart until Steven went to Cardiac Rehab. She said “It was an absolute pleasure to raise £410 for the Unit. I did it (organising a climb of Pen-y-fan) for all the hard work of the staff of Cardiac Rehab.” Ade Bowen, a former patient at the Unit, raised £250 for the Unit from a cycle ride. Teenager Amy Daley, with friends Hannah and Leah, also raised £410 for the Cardiac Rehab Unit by selling home-made pancakes, teas and coffees. It was her way of saying thanks to the cardiac team for looking after her father after he had been cared for and helped by staff at the Unit. Radiographer Caroline Hurley and a team of colleagues from Morriston Hospital made a donation of £3,000 to the Unit after completing a gruelling 10-mile Tough Mudder challenge at Badminton. Caroline’s father went on a Cardiac Rehab Course after having a coronary artery bypass operation. He said he “saw huge benefits from attending the Cardiac Rehab Clinic after surgery.” 56

Our thanks from the Patrons Group to everyone for helping the vital work of the Cardiac Rehab Unit.
