Editor’s Foreword I CAN’T EVEN LOOK... I’m now deliberately avoiding Westminster politics for the foreseeable future, mainly to preserve my stable blood pressure, but also because I can’t bear to hear the bizarre collection of Conservative miscreants lie their way through televised debates, telling us just how wrong the injustices are that they’ve spent the last 10 years inflicting on the nation and how it is now their collective raison d’être. I am not watching the debates, but I can guarantee that is what will be said. I can’t even see the reason for televised debates – it’s not as if the population has ANY choice in this whatsoever. The odds are that the winner of the leadership will be bumbling clown Boris Johnson. I have no problem whatsoever with that. I DO have a huge problem with this man becoming our PM by default, because he’s not a bumbling clown at all. He’s a proven serial liar, a bully, a racist, a thug and a narcissist. He will say or do anything to further his own ambitions, and he has no conscience about who pays the price for his narcissism. Every man and woman in this country should be concerned at what is happening now. This WILL affect you. Boris Johnson will have no qualms about carving up the country for his rich friends (nor, for that matter, will 2nd favourite to win Jeremy Hunt). Boris Johnson is the one thing in politics that is more worrying than Brexit. If the rest of the Tory party do not vote to bring down the government in the next couple of months then Brexit will be pushed through without a deal. Even those of you who wish this to be the case should know this; if that happens, with any of the leadership candidates in charge, the NHS will be gone in all but name before this term of government is up. In just a few years we could be in the same position as most are in the U.S., where illness, accident or death in the family is quickly followed by bills, begging and often bankruptcy (and that’s the ones WITH insurance). “We’re the 5th richest country in the world” is the constant crow from the Tories. So why are we faced with cut after cut? Why are our pensioners not enjoying the 5th highest state pensions in the world, rather than the lowest in the developed world (OECD figures)? Why are our teachers paying for school equipment out of their own pockets? Why are our nurses visiting food banks to survive? It has to stop. The most simple minded fool can see that the rich are not content just with being rich, they are constantly stripping away the money and assets from the rest of us. Our institutions and resources have almost completely been sold off to the highest bidders, and the beneficiaries of these sales has not been us. Jacinda Arden, the New Zealand Prime Minister, has recently announced that the focus of her government will be on the wellbeing of the people. How can anyone argue with that sentiment? In the UK, we have all been conditioned to believe that the purpose of government is to have a strong economy. It’s not. This is the leeches telling us which way they want the blood pumped. Ms Arden is right – the purpose of government is to see that its people are happy and healthy. Those that dispute this are those that think the point of life is to benefit them personally, rather than society as a whole. Isn’t it time we finally stood up and demanded a government that treats us with respect? Until next time...

FLY-TIPPING FINE ISSUED
Dumping rubbish outside a household waste recycling centre has cost a Neath Port Talbot resident £200 after they were fined by Powys County Council. The council’s Waste Awareness and Enforcement Team issued the fine after the individual was caught on CCTV fly-tipping black bags of domestic refuse outside the gates of the household waste recycling centre in Lower Cwmtwrch on Saturday, June 1. The resident was fined for depositing controlled waste on land, breaching Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Since April, Neath Port Talbot residents have been able to use the centre in Lower Cwmtwrch as part of a collaborative agreement between both councils. Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste, said: “We want to make Powys a welcoming place for our residents and visitors and this starts by having a clean environment. “Household waste recycling centres are there for residents to recycle and dispose of their waste in the correct way. On this occasion, there was a short queue of just a few cars waiting to go into the centre while staff were assisting visitors and directing traffic to maintain traffic flow. It is completely unacceptable to take the law into your own hands and fly-tip the rubbish outside the centre. This person’s impatience and not want to wait for a few minutes has now cost them £200. All our centres are covered by CCTV and we will not hesitate to clamp down on such behaviour. We would encourage all visitors to our centres to be patient, especially during peak periods such as weekends, and pre-sort your waste and recycling before you visit to help keep the traffic flowing freely.”

Glynneath Town Mayor 2019/20 – Simon Knoyle Following my Inauguration Service on Sunday 9th June 2019, I wanted to update everyone on the theme of my speech for the coming year, my thoughts, plans and ideas for our great community. I am humbled to have been nominated, seconded and elected by my fellow Councillors for this very prestigious post, although still very new to the role as a Councillor, I aim to do my very best.
hopefully completed during the year.
Something we have to drive forward as a Council is to access more Community Funds to help drive and deliver more innovative, sustainable and new initiatives as possible. This is an exciting time in Glynneath and we have many schemes that we are working towards: Welfare Park Development, Town Hall Events Plan, Street Enhancement Phase I, Cemetery Drive Drainage and Resurfacing Scheme plus many others. It is my intention to get as many of these schemes started and
Accessing the local Community Grants is something I believe we should be doing more of as a Council, with money from the Local Authority becoming less each year and Statutory Services the priority, we can do so much by using these Grants more effectively. During the last few months, I helped to set-up FOGL (Friends of Glynneath Library) and they are already starting to make a difference to this valuable community resource which was under pressure from closure from NPTCBC. I have also met with Cllr Dean Lewis, newly elected in our neighbouring ward of Resolven and we share similar beliefs, the main one of these being to help develop the Upper Neath Valley, we have so much potential in this area and we must work in partnership in order to achieve the best possible results. Working closely together with organisations, groups and societies, we can make a difference. I will also be working with my chosen Charity – NRWales (Neurological Rehabilitation Wales) to help raise awareness of what they do in our Community, helping people from the age of 5 to 88 with neurological injuries such as strokes, cerebral palsy and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Based in Glynneath and led by David Francis, they can provide consultations, specialist intensive therapy and intensive limb therapy to their clients. For more information: www.arni.uk.com It is my intention to fund raise throughout the year with events and activities which will raise the profile of this great organisation and raise much needed funds for them

Essential advice when preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) can be prepared to legally appoint a person or persons to manage your finances and make decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. This can be extremely important if you suffer from any physical or mental incapacity in the future. There are two types of LPA as follows:-
We advise on: • Long Term Care and Fees • Wills
- Health and Welfare LPA this allows your attorneys to make decisions about your medical treatment, how you are cared for or where you live. It can also give them power to give or refuse consent to life sustaining treatment if desired. This type of LPA is only used if you lack capacity to make decisions yourself. - Property and Financial Affairs LPA this gives your attorneys power to manage your finances, so they can pay bills for you, sell your property and deal with your bank accounts. Whilst you still have capacity to make decisions your attorney can act under your instruction, however, should you lose capacity they can continue to act and make decisions for you in your best interests. Once the documents are prepared, they must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be used.
• Powers of Attorney • Tax Advice • Buying and Selling a Property • Court of Protection Applications • Estate Administration • Trusts
We advise that consideration is given to preparing LPAs while fit and well to ensure that the persons you choose are legally able to act on your behalf. Although many people believe that they can put the document in place as and when they suffer ill health, this may not be possible if the illness is sudden or severe. Even if they can be prepared at the time they would need to be registered and the attorney may not be able to act for several months. LPAs are powerful legal documents and once appointed an attorney has wide powers to manage your finances and make decisions for you. It is therefore important to give serious consideration to whom to appoint as an attorney as the role confers on them a significant responsibility. It is recommended that anyone wanting to make LPAs Attorney seeks professional advice. A lawyer will be able to advise on the drafting of the document and can discuss any additional clauses regarding your instructions, preferences and permissions as to how and by whom your affairs are managed. A lawyer can also deal with the registration process for you and answer any questions or concerns you may have throughout the process. Jennifer Melly Law provide advice about Lasting Powers of Attorney and can assist you in the preparation and registration of your Lasting Powers of Attorney. Please contact us for a quotation on 01639 630057.

FOR JULY 2019
Photograph by Jeanine Bishopp. If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to phil@communitymag.co.uk
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
July is likely to return some lovely weather, especially through the middle segment of the month and latter stages, with high pressure and subsequent systems expected to settle over Wales to allow for some warm, invariably very warm days. However, as portions of June proved, we are unlikely to have everything our own way. Models suggest that at times, more changeable conditions will be in evidence, probably the most indifferent of which showing its hand at the beginning of July. That said, we can expect the lion's share of drier conditions during what may ultimately turn out to be a disappointing July weather-wise, but if allowed, at times, still pleasantly warm, with bright sunshine and clear blue skies. Rainfall is expected to return average values for the month, with temperatures also looking set to come in around the average. Jonathan Powell, Tuesday June 11th 2019 Nothing is more INCONVENIENT Than Your Boiler Breaking Down In Winter. The Answer?
A Summer Service could save you from a breakdown when the temperature drops, and is far more convenient than shutting your heating down in the dead of winter. We undertake all boiler repairs, servicing and cleaning, as well as the SAFE commissioning of new boilers. A Service & Clean Pays For Itself In Saved Fuel! Hi, Phil I will quickly pass over your revolting account of your age-related hairy embellishments. Please spare us any more such details! Recently, a Gower-based chap who was doing a job for me said how nice it was to come up to Ystradgynlais. He felt a community spirit here, so often missing today. Walking round the village, we can understand what he means. Attendance at this year’s talent show at St Cynog’s Church hall on June 7th was greatly increased and more shoots of fellow-feeling involvement are showing. Fact is most of us long back to the times when we came out of our homes and joined in with each other in some activity or other. Around town, so much is being done by volunteers, in particular the ‘Blods’ (the hardworking plant enthusiasts in ‘Blodau’), to increase our chances of scoring in ‘Britain in Bloom’, pursuant to winning ‘Wales in Bloom’ last year. (I gather they welcome more volunteersđ&#x;˜Š.) Also, the now established Town Festival is imminent. It was, therefore, with great sadness and disgust that I heard that some low-life has nicked a number of plants from the pots around the Church Hall, all skilfully extracted and earth replaced. I understand that a pot from the nearby Sacred Heart Church entrance was also stolen recently. CCTV will of course catch these beggars eventually. What is wrong with such people? Have they no conscience, no decency? Everyone who is proud of our town needs to be vigilant and report any people they see doing such things. Of course, ‘what goes around, comes around’ is certainly a well-grounded saying. In the end, God is watching! Call it karma, or whatever you wish, but no good will come to such deviants. Sadly disappointed to write such news... 3 STEPS Gardening & Maintenance Services Sam England No job too small 07866 901911 01639 841827

RELAXATION AND HYPNOSIS IN REDUCING ANXIOUSDEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS AND INSOMNIA I am often asked about hypnotherapy and the symptoms I help people to overcome. Clients I help are often experiencing physical symptoms such as stress, anxiety and insomnia. The majority of my work seems to help people learn to relax. Although Meditation and mindfulness techniques can be relaxing I use my own specially formulated hypno – methods to help people deeply relax. Recent research referred to in an article in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis highlights that mentions relaxation and clinical hypnosis techniques are very effective in the reduction of these types of symptoms. “Its definitely helped and I would say to others give it a go – there’s no harm and I was able to see results/take control in a short space of time ” Testimonial - J Davies – Health Professional “Antonina was so helpful when our daughter suffered a very severe traumatic back injury following an accident. She was able to guide her through some very difficult times and gave her the tools to manage her pain, anxiety & fears. She made MP3 downloads specifically for her to listen to & use whenever the need arose. I can’t recommend Antonina highly enough and I would encourage anyone thinking of Hypnotherapy to give her a call” M Fanning – Health Professional

EXTINCTION REBELLION FORMS NEW NPT GROUP Following the successful protests in April that closed down the centre of London for over a week, subsequently forcing the UK Parliament and Welsh Assembly to each declare a Climate and Ecological Emergency, a new Extinction Rebellion group has been formed locally. Extinction Rebellion (XR) Neath Port Talbot has already held three meetings in Neath and Ystalyfera, and are currently in the process of organising an outreach and information event in Neath town centre on Saturday, 29th June, in order to highlight the climate and environmental crisis we’re now living through, globally. Founding member, Kat Roberts, commented: “We are facing a climate crisis - a complete breakdown of the natural world around us and its ecosystems. We are not only rebelling against the extinction of countless other species but the possibility of our own as human beings. Conventional approaches of voting, lobbying, petitions and protests have failed because of powerful political and economic interests prevent change, and we feel non-violent direct action is the only way for those in power to take our three demands seriously.”
Extinction Rebellion’s three demands:
• For governments and institutions to ‘TELL THE TRUTH’ about the climate destruction around us and the impact of human activity upon the natural world; • To commit to a net-zero carbon society by 2025; and • To organise ‘Citizen’s Assemblies’ to oversee the changes needed in relation to climate action.
30
Ms Roberts added: “A UN report last year stated we only have 12 years remaining to avert a climate catastrophe - that is, if we start now; not in twelve years’ time. Extinction Rebellion organises itself into small groups, and these groups are connected in a larger web that is constantly evolving as we grow and learn. We are working to build a movement that is participatory, decentralised and inclusive, so please do come along to our meetings and events, and discover what you can do to help combat climate breakdown.” Extinction Rebellion Neath Port Talbot meets regularly. Search for their Facebook Page using ‘XRNeathPortTalbot’ to find out when and where their next meeting is scheduled.

Child and Family Wellbeing
38
Michelle Holland was at her wits’ end when she made an appointment to see her GP. She couldn’t cope with her son’s challenging behaviour and, with an eight-month-old baby to look after as well, she desperately needed help. Luckily for Michelle, the doctor was able to prescribe just what she needed – a guiding hand from ‘super nanny’ Jo Edwards. Jo has already helped hundreds of worried parents in her role with the Primary Care Child and Family Wellbeing Service, working with families in their own homes to help them find better ways of managing their children’s behaviour. “A GP can only do so much in a ten minute appointment but we go into people’s homes and spend two hours at a time with them over a period of time and that’s when you really start to get to the root of the problem,” said Jo. It has worked wonders for Michelle, her partner Rob and seven-year-old Alex. “Without Jo, I don’t know where I’d be,” said Michelle. “Alex has high functioning autism, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and ODD (oppositional defiant disorder). From the age of two it became clear there was a problem. What I thought were the ‘terrible twos’ went on to three and four and the school started to highlight it. “Everything is high speed with Alex. He would want something there and then and if he didn’t get it his frustration would boil over and he would lash out. “I didn’t know how to deal with him. He kept being excluded from school and it took a long time to get a diagnosis of what he had. Even then, a diagnosis doesn’t take away the worry or the problem. “He would call me early every morning, and he would shout for me at least 40 times in the time it took me to get out of bed and go to his room. Now I say: call Mum once and then count 20 and I’ll be there by the time you get to 20.” They found that Alex responded well to rewards. “He has no fear and he would jump out of the car and run across the road when we got home from school. Now he knows he can earn three stars and therefore 15 minutes of iPad time if he gets out of the car nicely, goes into the house and takes off his coat and shoes,” said Michelle. “We’ve developed that further so he gets a star if he has a good day at school and if he gets five stars from Monday to Friday I take him to the newsagents where he can pick a magazine out of the rack.” Said Jo: “Sometimes children get labelled as ‘naughty’ when it is the behaviour that is naughty and not the child. Alex is now being rewarded for good behaviour.” “The last two years have been really hard but in the last month or so, I am starting to see a real
Service helps parents cope benefit from the work we are doing with Alex,” said Michelle. “He used to slam the door in my face to get a reaction. He was attention seeking, so now I ignore that behaviour, and give him attention when he’s good, and he’s stopped slamming the door.” “When we first started seeing Jo, Alex was at a pupil referral unit for four days a week and in mainstream school one day a week. Now that is the other way around.” The Child and Family Wellbeing Service is a joint initiative run by the local health board, GPs and Swansea Council. It started out as a pilot scheme but has been so successful that it has been expanded to cover a wider area and employ a second worker, Elle Matthews. Jo and Elle work with families with children aged 0-11 in the Penderi, Llwchwr and Cwmtawe areas. The service is helping take pressure off GPs and saving time and money for the NHS. Dr Kannan Muthuvairavan, lead GP in the Llwchwr area, said: “There has been a reduction in demand for GP appointments from parents and children as they are now being seen by the service. This is a financial saving for us as a GP practice and increases the availability of appointments for our other patients.” The service is being evaluated to demonstrate its value and early results show that it is highly effective compared to usual care. Now that Michelle has new strategies for managing Alex’s behaviour, Jo can step back, but she will still stay in touch once a month to make sure everything is going well. “I have bought Alex a kitten to show him how to love and care for something and it is going really well. He is very gentle with it,” said Michelle. “I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel!“

RABBIT AWARENESS - PART ONE This month we are focusing on our furry rabbit friends who are often misunderstood as being an easy pet to look after. Domestic rabbits can live to be 8-12 years old (the same age as many of our large dog companions). They require just as much commitment as a dog or a cat and should not be taken on without understanding how to care for them correctly. If a rabbit is the right pet for you then we hope these top five topics will help you keep them healthy and happy. 1. Behaviour - Rabbits are very sociable, which is why we keep them in pairs or groups. Too often rabbits are placed in a tiny hutch at the bottom of the garden where they are forgotten. This is not only sad, but it is a form of neglect which can be reported to the police and RSPCA. Many rabbit behaviour problems occur from poor husbandry, so it is important to give them everything they need to be happy. If you keep your rabbits outdoors make sure their hutch is large enough that they can move around and have separate areas to eat, sleep and toilet. A hutch can never be too big, but as a minimum must be 6x2x2 feet (180x60x60 cm) for a pair of rabbits. Providing them with different levels that they can jump onto, lots of bedding they can bury themselves in and toys that they can play with will help give them mental stimulation. Exercise is also very important as rabbits are athletic animals. Giving your rabbits plenty of time to run around the house or in an outdoor run each day will help keep them healthy and happy. Rabbits that have not grown up together may need to go through a bonding process so you can house them collectively. This is not always easy so please feel free to ask advice from us before you introduce new rabbits. Rabbits get very lonely if they are on their own, so if you cannot pair your rabbit we recommend you keep them indoors so they get lots of human company instead. Of course, if you’re keeping more than one rabbit housed together you need to make sure they are the same gender or neutered to avoid ending up with kits. Male and female rabbits can be paired together as long as they have been neutered. Neutering is strongly recommended as it can help decrease fighting and aggressive behaviour, as well as make your pet easier to handle. It also has great health benefits, particularly to female rabbits that have 60-80% chance of getting uterine cancer as they get older. 2. Diet - Rabbits are designed to eat grass and in the wild they eat little else. Our pet rabbits are not very different from wild ones and so shouldn’t really be fed any differently. Getting your rabbit’s diet correct is essential to keeping them healthy, as doing it wrong causes a massive number of problems. If you ever notice your rabbit has not eaten for more than half a day call us immediately to get an appointment, as this is an emergency. To be sure you’re getting it right follow these easy guidelines: - Make sure fresh grass or hay is available at all times. You cannot give them too much of this, it should make up around 85% of their diet.

Opening Hours Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 18.00pm Saturday: 9.00am - 13.00pm
- Supply fresh water in a bowl or a bottle and change this daily. - Feed 1 level eggcup of nuggets twice a day for each 2.5kg rabbit (5% of their diet). If your rabbit weighs less than 2.5kg then you need to reduce the amount accordingly. Nuggets should be “complete” i.e. all the same colour, and not a muesli-type (multi-coloured) to stop them choosing only the bits they like! - Feed small amounts of other plants/fruit/vegetables as treats (10% of their diet). Our team will happily give you options for safe treats to give your rabbit but in general dark green vegetables are good, e.g kale, spinach, rocket. Only give starchy/sugary foods like carrots and apples once a week.

Hello again, This time I want to talk a little about the general issue of dowelling and support of memorials. On the face of it, this would seem to be a straight forward subject. The reality, however, is quite different in many cases. According to the current British Standard, dowelling must be stainless steel of a high grade; it is also necessary to ensure that the correct diameter and length of dowel is used and that the dowel holes are similarly compliant. If these guidelines are followed, dowelling has been tested and is completely effective. Obviously older memorials may not be dowelled to this standard, and so whatever the work we are asked to carry out on a memorial, whether it is an additional inscription or a cleaning job, the first question we must as is ‘Is this memorial compliant with BS8415?’ If it is not, we MUST make it safe. Failure to this may result in a fixer losing his or her fixing license. It is exactly the same with foundations for lawn memorials or full memorials. I have recently been asked to quote for cleaning a full memorial, however when I went to see the memorial I quickly realised that cleaning was not as pressing as making sure the headstone was safe, and this became the focus of our work. If you would like any advice on any aspect of memorial masonry please contact me and I am happy to advise free of charge and with no obligation at all.

CONFIDENCE TO USE YOUR CYMRAEG Confidence is an important part of learning to speak Welsh as an adult. It can sometimes take confidence just to walk through the classroom door – particularly if it’s been some time since leaving formal education. Some people may also lack confidence in their own ability to take on a new subject such as Welsh, however the message at Learn Welsh Swansea Bay Region is that anyone can learn. All our courses are run in a friendly way, where the emphasis is on speaking and enjoying the Welsh language right from the start. We deliver a range of courses in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot at different levels of fluency, whether learners are new to the language or already speak a little. Courses are also available for fluent or lapsed Welsh speakers who are eager to brush up their skills. Free, digital resources are available to support people’s learning, while there are also countless opportunities to practise speaking Welsh, whether pub quizzes, book clubs, coffee mornings, guided walks or gigs. With Welsh, people often underestimate how much they already know. The Welsh language is all around us, in place names and road signs, in schools, libraries and the community in general. Getting people through the door is one thing, but confidence continues to play a part as people progress through our courses, strengthening their skills. Many of our students say that learning Welsh has given them greater confidence in other areas of their lives, and there’s no doubt adult learning can transform lives. As our tutors get ready for the new academic term, it’s never been easier to find a course near you, and from September onwards, all courses will be priced £90 (concessions also available).

TRUSTED LOCAL SERVICE
A BRAND NEW BRAND FOR LOCAL EATERY Rob Megson and head chef Neil Rochard have long been fixtures in our valley pubs and restaurants, and the popularity of the pub restaurants they have created is testament to their continued success, with eager armies of hungry diners and pub goers having followed them from place to place over the years. It’s a kind of loyalty that is built on knowing their business and understanding what the customer wants, and then offering it at the highest standards. Having come to the realisation that their continued success is down to what they do rather than where they are, the duo have decided to rebrand their unique service as ‘The Cow & Pig Pub Company’. The branding means that whenever you see the name you’ll be able to enjoy the now famous Rochard’s Ribs and Grill Menu that is currently enjoyed at The Aubrey and sister site The Tregib Arms. The pair are clearly excited about the development and the opportunities it could bring in the future, and rightfully so. For us diners it will mean an easy way to identify a quality restaurant. Watch this space for the new logo to look out for.
