Editor’s Foreword A few months ago I was given a ukulele as a gift from some good friends (actually the second ukulele I have received as a gift over the years!). Lockdown has afforded me more time to fully appreciate the charms of the uke and, indeed, it is charming. Having spent decades of my life in music in one way or another, a bit of time spent with this particular instrument has reminded me of how we (specifically me, in this instance, but allow me the generalisation) have a tendency to complicate things, often entirely without need. The ukulele could hardly be more simple as an instrument; it has only four strings and once tuned is so easy to begin to play that even young children can learn a few chords in minutes. Like all instruments, there are virtuoso players and virtuoso pieces to play, but at its heart is simplicity; just strum along a few chords to provide accompaniment to a song. It’s a beautiful thing, both in concept and practice. Its simplicity allows one to fully appreciate the beauty of a melody in its purest essence. The poetry of lyrics, and the sentiment of the composer are laid bare. Of course, all musical instruments are capable of producing aural beauty in the right hands, but I can’t really think of one so easily accessible as the uke. It’s a shame that more schools don’t teach it, rather than recorder (another simple instrument – but achieving a pleasing sound is a little further away than with uke!). Anyone who has contact with school aged children will know that these days there is a good and healthy emphasis on physical and emotional wellbeing in education these days. What better example of ‘mindfulness’ could there be than sitting quietly with your instrument, exploring the colours and emotions of music? I think, also, that the ukulele can be analogous to other aspects of our lives. Certainly, it seems that lockdown is reminding us not only of the joys and freedoms that we take for granted, but also of the stresses and complexities that, when it comes down to the basics of being happy, are simply unnecessary. Whilst we are all, understandably, anxious to get back to normal, it’s a pity that we aren’t having the conversation of what we would like that ‘normal’ to look like. The old normal, you’ll remember, is one where the chances of those children learning any instrument at all is, apparently, no longer an affordable option for many schools. The old normal is where, for many, we have replaced the benefits of working hard with the struggle of being unable to afford to live comfortably. The old normal is where we are told that we should be creating a symphony, although for most of us it is the little ditties that make up our lives. Maybe our conductors would serve us better coming from community halls, rather than grand and opulent theatres. At least one where they could see the audience would be a good start. I look forward to your letters next month, no doubt insinuating that I would be happier playing a balalaika!
Phil

ARE YOU READY FOR THE SENEDD AND POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER ELECTIONS?
Households in Neath Port Talbot are being asked to check electoral records following changes to who is eligible to register to vote, as preparations continue for a May 6th polling day. On Thursday 6 May 2021, Senedd and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in Wales are currently scheduled to take place. Prior to the spring elections the Electoral Registration Officer will be writing to all households across the County Borough asking them to check their registration details and encourage those people who may be missing from the register to apply. Karen Jones, Electoral Registration Officer for Neath Port Talbot said: “By sending a letter to all households showing who is registered to vote at a particular address enables us to check that the electoral register is as up to date as possible prior to the May elections.” “If all the information is correct, each household needs to do anything.” “If someone is not included then they will need to register and the quickest and easiest way to do this is online via www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.” Mrs. Jones added: “This is also the first time in Wales that 16 and 17 year olds and qualified foreign citizens can vote in Senedd elections and I am particularly keen to ensure that all eligible electors don’t lose the chance to have their say and cast their vote.” Due to the coronavirus pandemic voters may also wish to consider their voting options particularly if they are vulnerable, shielded, isolating or cannot make it to a polling station for reasons of mobility. For electors who may be considering voting by post or by proxy (someone you trust on your behalf ) you can find more information and download an application form from www.electoralcommission.org. uk/voter. Apply early and vote from the comfort of your home.

EMPLOYERS, CAN YOU ‘KICKSTART’ A YOUNG PERSON’S CAREER?
Employers across Neath Port Talbot are being asked if they can offer young people a job placement – with the position fully funded by the UK Government as part of its new Kickstart scheme. Neath Port Talbot Council acts as a Gateway Representative (local agent) for the Kickstart programme in the county borough. The job creation programme, overseen by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), was launched in 2020 to support firms to offer six-month work placements for 16 to 24-year-olds who are in receipt of Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment. Funding available for each job will cover 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus the associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions. Employers will get £1,000 per placement to support any set up costs, training or equipment required. Also, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Employability Team will be providing a full package of support for both the placement and the employer, through reviews and support sessions For each ‘Kickstarter’ job, the government will cover the cost of 25 hours’ work a week at the National Minimum Wage: • £4.55 for under 18s • £6.45 for 18 to 20-year-olds • £8.20 for 21 to 24-year-olds Employers will also be able to top up that payment if they wish. Cllr Annette Wingrave, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development, said: “The jobs in this scheme will give young people the opportunity to build their skills in the workplace and gain experience to improve their chances of finding long-term work. “The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on businesses across the country and the DWP recognises that benefit claims for young people have already risen and there has been an increase in unemployment among those aged 18-24. “It is therefore hoped the Council’s promotion of the Kickstart scheme and support from local employers will go some way towards alleviating the impact on young people of the current economic difficulties, and will offer quality employment and career opportunities for their future.” To find out more or to apply , email kickstart@npt.gov.uk or telephone 01639 684250

ANOTHER CASH BOOST FOR POWYS FREELANCERS
Powys freelancers in the cultural and creative sectors who received grants of £2,500 last Autumn may be eligible for more support. Welsh Government have recently announced a second round of payments as part of their Covid-19 Cultural Recovery Fund, which was first announced in September 2020. Powys County Council will once again be administering the funds to help ease cash flow pressures for the freelance professionals. The criteria set out by Welsh Government explains that the payments can only be made to freelancers who received the first grant, and that anyone in receipt of a Discretionary Business Grant is unable to apply. Eligible freelancers will need to complete a simple online form and confirm that there has been no change in circumstances since their first payment last year. Cllr Aled Davies, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “It is great news that the Welsh Government has extended the much-needed grant scheme for these valued professionals. “Yet again the council will play a key role in delivering the support, which will be on top of the business support grants and self-isolation payments it continues to make. “Administering various support schemes means that the council is working through a huge number of payments at the moment so I kindly ask people to please bear with us. “Freelancers from all corners of Powys benefitted from the initial payments and the council has been busy contacting those people in readiness for the second allocation. “We will make every effort to ensure that individuals receive the £2,500 payment where they are eligible for it. “I hope this news gives many freelancers a boost at what is a very challenging time for our cultural and creative industries.” Applications are now open and will close on Friday 26 February. Further details can be found on the council’s website: www.powys.gov.uk/freelancergrant

Administration Of Estates 2021 Update We advise on:
There have been a number of changes in the probate registry which have significantly affected timescales for obtaining probate. Some services have • Long Term Care and Fees been centralised which has meant significant changes within the registries. In addition, they have moved on to an online system which has caused delays. • Wills
The pandemic may also have affected timescales, which is also the case when administering estates generally. Delays are being experienced in dealing with many banks and other asset holders when requesting information and arranging closure or encashment of assets. The procedure for administering an estate varies depending on the size of the estate and assets involved. However, generally the assets need to be valued as at the date of death and details of any assets and liabilities given to the probate registry and to HMRC directly for larger or more complex estates. For larger estates inheritance tax often has to be paid before the grant is applied for. Once the probate registry issues the grant then the assets can be collected in and any assets to be kept transferred to the beneficiaries. The personal representatives need to ensure that all liabilities including income tax, inheritance tax and capital gains tax (where relevant) are paid before they pay or transfer funds to the beneficiaries. Funds should be held in a separate bank account and an account of all payments in and out of the estate must be prepared by the personal Representatives.

For ALL Your Plumbing & Heating Requirements
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
After an indifferent February weather-wise with snow, ice, and very cold temperatures, counterbalanced by rain and very mild values, March looks set to continue with the changeable theme but probably not to the extremes witnessed. Whilst wintry incursions in March aren't unusual, we may well be spared a last gasp from the outgoing season although winter's of late have carried a sting in the tail. For the much of March, low pressure systems look likely to be in control giving a very fluid and at times wet month, accompanied by windy conditions. Temperatures will fluctuate as we pull clear of winter and head into spring, with the risk of frosts declining, and perhaps even some encouraging late March sunshine yielding just a hint of warmth. Rainfall will be on or slightly above the average. Temperatures will be on or slightly above the average. Jonathan Powell, Monday, February 15th 2020

Dear Sir, In reading your “Editor’s Foreword”, how interesting that you quote at length Friedrich Engels, co-author with Karl Marx of The Communist Manifesto (1848). Engels was influenced by anarchists. Indeed a group he belonged to “Young Hegelions” directed assaults against the foundations of Christianity and had revolutionary goals. He wanted a revolution that would lead to the elimination of private property. This says a lot about you and the ideas you regularly spew out. A while back I thought your comments were insulting, but now I can but laugh at your ideas. I wonder if you’re living in the correct country – perhaps Vladimir Putin would welcome you with open arms – you have much in common. Indeed you should seriously consider emigrating to the USSR, as the Capitalist West obviously has nothing to offer you. As our Governments roll out the vaccine in a bid to eradicate Covid, I can only wonder that if China, had been a democracy and informed the World Health Organisation of the problem of Covid rather than silencing those of its people who dared speak out, the entire World would not have to face such a disaster. Wake up man! It’s time to pull together, not play politics and pander to Communist doctrine. Try asking Novalny in Russia why he can’t express his opinions! Let’s hope, that soon the entire World can get back to normality and as a proud citizen of the U.K., that our country can soon, when safe begin returning to normal. With thanks to all those fellow citizens of every creed, colour or political persuasion who have helped in these unprecedented times. The like of which, God willing we will never see again. Faithfully A Watkins Hi Phil Just a note to let you know how much I appreciate your thoughts in the Editor’s Forewrd. We need more commentators like you to shine through the fog of corporate media propoganda. At a time when there seems so little hope reading your article this morning was very encouraging. Thank you John Davies. (Gurnos) Before refurbishment After refurbishment

March is finally here, and with it the promise of spring, better weather, and the hope we’re closer to once more enjoying some of the freedoms we all miss so much. Vaccination against Coronavirus is such an important step in that road back to freer times, and this month should be heralded with the news that over 100,000 vaccinations have been carried out in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Valentine’s Day saw our first milestone reached – protecting the most vulnerable of all in our communities: people over 70; those in care homes, frontline health and care staff and people who were shielding. But if you are in one of those groups and missed out for whatever reason, it’s not too late. Here’s what to do: If you or a relative is aged over 80, or have been shielding, please contact your GP to book your vaccination. If you are aged 70 – 79, please ring 01792 530606 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Saturday or email SBU.COVIDbookingteam@wales.nhs.uk If you are a frontline social care staff member, please email: westglamsocialcarevaccinations@ swansea.gov.uk Frontline health board staff should contact their line manager. Finally, if you deliver frontline health care and work as an independent practitioner, or for an independent company, you can still have a vaccination. Please email SBU.COVIDbookingteam@ wales.nhs.uk with your name, DOB, mobile number and proof of registration. Since last month the vaccination programme has moved on to the next priority groups, and also started second doses of the vaccines for frontline health staff. Priority group five covers people aged 65-69, and they’ve received invitations starting with the 69-year-olds and working down in age. Priority group six covers those who have underlying health conditions, and also carers. Like the rest of the UK, we are working to the national Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) guidelines about who gets vaccinated. The situation at the time this feature was written was as follows. However this list may be subject to updates, so the latest details can be found at www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-the-green-book-chapter-14a At the time of publication, the advice was to vaccinate people aged 16 and up with the following conditions: • chronic respiratory disease: individuals with a severe lung condition, including those with asthma that requires continuous or repeated use of systemic steroids or with previous exacerbations requiring hospital admission, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including chronic bronchitis and emphysema; bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung fibrosis, pneumoconiosis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). • chronic heart disease (and vascular disease) • chronic kidney disease • chronic liver disease • chronic neurological disease including epilepsy • Down’s syndrome • severe and profound learning disability
SWANSEA AND NEATH PORT TALBOT • diabetes • solid organ, bone marrow and stem cell transplant recipients • people with specific cancers • immunosuppression due to disease or treatment • asplenia and splenic dysfunction • morbid obesity • severe mental illness If you fall into one of these groups, you will receive an invitation to be vaccinated. People in receipt of a carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill, will also get a vaccination. We are working through the detail of this, and will be updating shortly. By the end of April we hope to have vaccinated all these people, plus everyone else over the age of 50. By the autumn, all eligible adults in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot should have had their vaccinations. As well as the work GPs are doing to vaccinate patients, the health board is vaccinating in our three mass vaccination centres at the Bay field hospital, Margam Orangery and in the Canolfan Gorseinon Centre. There is now a free shuttle bus service, service 51, running between Swansea’s main bus station and selected stops along the way to the Bay mass vaccination centre on Fabian Way.The service is funded by Swansea Council and operated by First Cymru. Dr Anjula Mehta, Primary and Community Medical Director, said: “The roll out of the COVID-19 vaccination programme within General Practice has been a phenomenal achievement on top of their routine workload. “GPs were allocated the over- 80s, care homes and clinically extremely vulnerable groups of people, which amounts to a third of all vaccines given within Swansea Bay to date. There is a sense of pride amongst our General Practice teams. They feel honoured to play their part in this programme and epitomise the true ethos of our NHS in putting the patient at the heart of what we do and delivering care closer to home. “But whilst we continue to fight COVID-19 in our hospitals and community, please help us to help you by washing your hands regularly, wear a face covering in public indoor places and continue to follow the two metre social distancing rule.”

FREE OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICINES IN SWANSEA TO STOP PEOPLE SUFFERING IN SILENCE People in Swansea are being urged not to suffer in silence with common ailments and instead take advantage of an NHS scheme which provides over-the-counter medicines completely free of charge without seeing a GP. The ‘Common Ailments Scheme’ allows pharmacists to assess and treat up to 26 minor conditions, with all medicines being given free of charge without the need for a prescription. The scheme is available in all 125 community pharmacies in the Swansea Bay University Health Board area. Patients must register with the pharmacy to use the scheme, and consultations are carried out in a private room. If the pharmacist decides you need to see a doctor, they will refer you. Conditions covered by the scheme are: acne, athlete’s foot, back pain, chickenpox, cold sores, colic, conjunctivitis, constipation, diarrhoea, dry eyes, dermatitis, haemorrhoids, hay fever, head lice, indigestion, in-growing toenails, ringworm, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, oral thrush, scabies, sore throat, teething, threadworms, vaginal thrush, and verrucae. Even though GP surgeries are open (although you need to contact them first – you can’t just walk in now) some people with minor conditions are wary of contacting their GP because they don’t want to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic, or don’t want to bother their doctor during such a busy time. But says Kayleigh Williams, Associate Director Contractor Engagement at Community Pharmacy Wales, many of the minor conditions people don’t want to bother a doctor for, but don’t want to pay for, can now be dealt with your local pharmacy at no cost to you: “Our message is very much ‘help us, help you’. Clearly, throughout the pandemic, other health conditions still need to be treated and, in many cases, if they are left to their own devices, they will get worse: things like backache, head lice, scabies, thrush, verrucae, colic, and conjunctivitis all need medical attention. And at a time when budgets are tight for many families in Swansea, the Common Ailments Scheme is something people can lean on. “The scheme allows pharmacists to assess and treat patients for up to 26 conditions - and they can give advice, supply free medicines from an agreed list, or refer the patient to a GP or other health professional, if necessary. All people need to do is register with the pharmacy to use the scheme. The process takes just a few minutes. “This free service is a great way for patients to take control of their well-being, and it enables people to get appropriate treatment in a safe environment, at no cost to them at all. Community pharmacies across the Swansea Bay University Health Board area – including Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Bridgend - are signed up to the scheme.” As the Welsh Government reiterates the ‘Help Us, Help You’ message this winter, the aim of the scheme is to improve access to services and to encourage self-care whilst freeing up the time of GPs to deal with more complex cases. It is hoped it will encourage people to see a pharmacist instead of their GP for everyday conditions or common ailments. Pharmacies remain open during this period of lockdown, and people are being asked to collect their medicines, if they can, on their due date so pharmacies aren’t overloaded with demands for deliveries. People are also being reminded to wear masks when they visit the pharmacy and to be patient as some pharmacies may be busy. Kayleigh Williams continued: “Pharmacists are highly trained professionals, and this service is helping to take some pressure off GPs, who are working hard to meet patient demand for appointments over the winter period. We are also seeing people build a greater rapport with their pharmacists thanks to the scheme. The past few years have seen pharmacies really evolving and offering more services, including flu vaccinations, emergency contraception, smoking cessation schemes and medicine reviews, and this is a very positive step for people’s long-term health and health management.”

Ystradgynlais Foodbank is fast approaching its 1st birthday, after being set up in April 2019 as a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that time we have supplied emergency food parcels for more than 1,700 people. Our service has evolved over time to meet the changing needs of the community and we are now also able to offer Electricity Top Up Vouchers in conjunction with Community Dreams and TLT Store, Penrhos.
We are hugely indebted to all of our volunteers and our local community, without whom, none of this would have been possible.
We have been totally amazed at the continued generosity of local people in donating goods and money to help us continue this service. Our volunteers have been fantastic also, going above and beyond to help keep the service running.

Dear Sir, Your magazine has just been delivered. Is it a Community Mag, or just your idea of a way of spouting your politics? If your going to spout your politics then call it something else. As for your millions that apparently saw this coming are these the same millions who kept drinking in pubs two weeks after they were told not to? Are these the same millions who kept visiting the beaches and the parks? Are these the millions who protested in London? The same millions who protested at Black Lives Matter? Are these the same millions who are still visiting pubs? The same four hundred gathered for a wedding last week? The three hundred who went on a rave last week? I can go on. The British public have been a total disgrace. Don’t use this magazine to spout your political agenda. P. Grabarski
Dear Phil, Congratulations again, I only wish you had a national audience for your editorials. It is beyond any reasonable doubt that the actions of this government make them culpable for the tragic and shameful loss of life in our communities. There is no shortage of people talking about this online, but it goes completely unrepresented in the mainstream media. This is, obviously, nothing more than propaganda. I have no doubt that you’ll upset the usual faction with this. I really can’t understand how anyone could defend this government on any level at all, but they are out there and it seems that no amount of harm ever causes them to question their support for a clique of people that clearly couldn’t care less for them or their families. Again, keep up the good work! I look forward to the next one. All the best Mark 35

NEATH PORT TALBOT CVS HOSTS ITS FIRST VIRTUAL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Every year, Neath Port Talbot CVS look forward to hosting their Annual General Meeting to celebrate the achievements they made during the financial year, although, instead of the ordinary, Neath Port Talbot CVS had to adapt to the ‘new normal’. On January 28th 2021, Neath Port Talbot CVS hosted their 23rd Annual General Meeting using the online platform ‘Zoom’. They were keen to welcome over 100 attendees and looked forward to sharing how Neath Port Talbot CVS has made a difference across Neath Port Talbot in supporting charities, voluntary groups, social enterprises, individuals, volunteers, communities and partnerships. David Davies, the Chair of Neath Port Talbot CVS started the event by welcoming all and thanking the staff for their dedication and passion, and also publicly recognising the groups, volunteers, and organisations for their contribution and much more. Gaynor Richards, Director of Neath Port Talbot CVS, presented the annual report which reflected the financial year of April 2019 – March 2020 stating: “The effectiveness of the third sector is at the heart of what we do at Neath Port Talbot CVS and this annual report highlights the impact we have made. Our success is reflected in the stories of individuals and communities and how, working with the third sector, communities, carers and individuals and all our partners – people’s lives have been enhanced and improved.’’ An animated video was played to participants to highlight some of those achievements. Louise Fleet, HM Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan remarked “Superb annual report presented in an imaginative way to the AGM this evening. Well done to everyone at NPTCVS makes a difference to peoples’ lives and so proud to hear of what you have done this year to help others”. Recognising the impact COVID-19 has had on the lives of everyone, Gaynor commented how “the Pandemic has taught us a great deal about ourselves and the communities that we live in, by simply seeing the kindness of strangers, and those individuals who had the moral duty to care for those who needed them”. Neath Port Talbot CVS supported 639 volunteers through the pandemic, conducted a 20 week training programme for volunteers, gave advice and guidance to 43 third sector organisations and carried out 3 surveys to gain a better understanding of the challenges the sector was facing locally. They worked directly with 127 organisations and supported groups to access an additional £1.5 million of grants at the start of the pandemic. Key note speakers Jeremy Miles, Member of the Senedd, and Cllr Robert Jones, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, used the opportunity to give gratitude and thanks to Neath Port Talbot CVS, the communities and volunteers for their support during challenging times. Jeremy Miles stated that “Capacity for compassion for care and endurance is the hallmark of our communities across Wales especially our extraordinary voluntary sector”. Cllr Robert Jones stated “The Voluntary Sector never ceases to amaze me. Neath Port Talbot CVS has once again stepped up for our community.” Before the Annual General Meeting came to an end, a special message was shared from a dear friend of Neath Port Talbot CVS, Michael Sheen. Michael, who has been an avid supporter of the communities during the pandemic gave his thanks to voluntary organisations within Neath Port Talbot. ‘’Voluntary organisations have faced many challenges with rising demand. We have all come to appreciate the small acts of kindness and gratitude to others.’’ You can watch the full recorded message on the CVS website here. Many positive words were shared by participants who attended this first virtual AGM for Neath Port Talbot CVS. Jo Abbot-Davies, Swansea Bay University Health Board commented “Always a great pleasure to work with you all at Neath Port Talbot CVS - the Health Board benefits greatly from all your work and that of the sector.’’ “Thank you for a great evening, and for the extraordinary dedication you bring to supporting organisations and communities across Neath Port Talbot. The work you do is inspiring and indispensable.’’ - Jeremy Miles MS Neath Port Talbot CVS would like to say thank you to all those who attended the Annual General Meeting and for the continued support despite the difficult circumstances.

WELSH WONDER DOG SHOWS ANYTHING’S PAWSIBLE. An 18 year old rescue dog from South Wales has written a children’s book about his amazing life adventures and how he came to find his forever home in the Dulais Valley, Neath. Stevie Jones aka Stevie the Wander Dog from Crynant has had a very eventful life since being rescued over 17 years ago. He’s been a mountain leader, a school volunteer and even been an actor on the stage. He’s climbed many mountains to raise money for charity and even travelled around Europe in a campervan, always spreading happiness and making friends wherever he went. Stevie came to live with the Jones family in 2003 where he soon became very popular in the village. Local children would knock on the door to see if Stevie was coming out to play or if he would like go on a sleepover with them. To which he was always very much obliging and loved all the extra fuss and attention. He was so good with children and would always be fully trusted due to his very gentle and calm nature. It was this lovely nature that meant he was invited to work with children in many different scenarios throughout his lifetime. His best friend, Hayley, recalls as a teenager waking up to a buzz of excitement in the house one day. “Everyone was rushing around, Stevie was on the sofa getting his hair brushed by my mother and my father was busy making Stevie a packed lunch. What is going on? I asked. To which came the reply “it’s Stevie’s first day at school.” It turned out to be his first day of many at the school in the years to come. Hayley’s father, Alan Tudor Jones ex Headteacher, would often take Stevie into school with him. Stevie was always a good morale boost for children practising for the school production or when attending revision sessions during school holidays. Stevie was also great entertainment for any of the children visiting the Head’s office. He even sat in on a few Governors meetings – he wasn’t allowed to vote though! Hayley now works at the school and has continued to ensure Stevie attendance in a wide range of the school events with her. These have included charity activities, the school fete, dressing up in various costumes for the annual fun run and many outdoor pursuit trips. He climbed Pen Y Fan many times on a variety of charity hikes. On one occasion in support for a school in Nepal that had been destroyed by an earthquake. His most rewarding time was the occasions he spent in the company of the pupils from the Study Units and he was equally astute in befriending pupils with poor behaviour. Many of the children would squabble over who got to pet Stevie or take him for walkies during breaktimes in the school. He always time for all of them. On Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions to the Brecon Beacons or Gower, Stevie would always make sure everybody was safe. If anyone walked off or fell behind he would stay with them until they caught up to the main group. On all activities he was in high demand with the children who couldn’t wait for their turn to hold his lead when hiking or to sit next to him by the campfire.

In 2010 he starred as ‘Sandy’ in the musical Annie on stage in the Princess Royal Theatre in Port Talbot. His cousin Harriet was one of the orphans and they were looking for a well behaved dog to play the part. Stevie was the perfect dog for the job. He used to go to rehearsals with the Melyn Crythan Amateur Dramatics club every week where he was a big hit with all the children and other actors. At home he used to watch the movie ‘Annie’ so he could learn his part and all the songs. His family temporarily called him
Sandy in an American accent around the house so he could get used to his stage name. So you could say “ Stevie was a method actor.” The little girl who played Annie used to take him for walks so they could get to know each other. He thoroughly enjoyed himself; getting extra belly and back scratches from all the children and his fans during the interval. He was really sad when it was all over as he missed the excitement of the orchestra starting up and the curtain rising. He also missed playing with all the children. In 2012 Stevie embarked on a European Gap Year adventure in a campervan. He loved travelling and sitting as the co captain in the front seat with his head out the window and hair and tongue blowing in the wind. He loved running along beside the bike, sailing on the canals and swimming after ducks in Amsterdam. He dined in fancy French restaurants and chased pigeons around the Eiffel tower in Paris. He hiked the Alps during the summer and skidded around on the snow during the Ski season. Hayley worked in Spain managing holiday villas where Stevie was always very popular with the guests. When she was busy cleaning the houses, she would often find Stevie swimming in the pool with the guests or taking a nap in a pile of laundry. He loved pulling Hayley along on her rollerblades along the paseo or going for long swims along the coastline at sunset. He even once had an encounter with a pod of Dolphins which he thought was absolutely thrilling. He would get very worried about other people jumping in the sea and would jump in after them to bring them back to shore. If people were body boarding he would swim in after them and pull them back to the beach by the cord of their board. He became very well known in the town, with local bars and restaurants owners who greated him with a bowl of water and a friendly ‘Hola Senior Estevie!’ if they saw him running by. For years people had been telling Stevie that he needed to write a book about all his adventures but he was a very busy boy travelling the world and still climbing mountains until he was 17 1/2 years old. He had a lot more time on his paws when he retired from being a mountain leader so with the help of his best friend he’s been writing about his adventures in his book :- Stevie the Wander Dog. Originally, the book had been written as a lovely keep sake of Stevie for the family. However, during lockdown, they decided to turn it into a proper children’s book and spread a heart warming story whilst raising money for charity. Half of the profits of every book sold will be donated to a local dogs charity to help abandoned and rescued dogs find their forever home. Stevie is currently supporting Llys Nini RSPCA Animal Centre. If you would like to buy a copy of Stevie’s book please visit his Facebook page or www.steviethewanderdog.com. Sadly, On 31st January the family said their final goodbye to Stevie as he drifted peacefully off to sleep at home surrounded by so much love. But not before he carried out his final best friend duty of walking Hayley down the aisle at a very small chapel wedding ceremony in December. Very proudly giving her away and upstaging the bride as usual. In a tribute to Stevie, Hayley said :- “It was like winning the lottery the day we found Stevie – he really was a one of a kind dog with a truly unique character who brought out the best in everyone – including me! We have been very privileged to know him and we are so proud of everything he has achieved in his long life and the gentle hearted boy that he was. He somehow made me a better person just for knowing him. I really hope that Stevie knows what a special little boy he was, how much he was loved by everyone and the impact he had on our lives. He was so much more than our family pet. He was our friend, he was family, he was one of us! He has filled our hearts with joy and given us a lifetime of beautiful memories that we will cherish forever. We shall miss him dearly but we are so grateful for the 18 years we got to spend with him by our side. He stayed just about long enough to make sure I was safe and in good hands. So your job is done Stevie boy, You go on ahead now and I’ll meet you at the top of the mountain – good boy….” 47

Phil, You rightly out the government’s lackadaisical response to Covid-19. Unfortunately, writing about Covid-19 without mentioning China is a bit like writing about Nazi Germany without mentioning Hitler. China let the Covid genie out the bottle; they knew about the disease weeks before informing the world, they lied about its transmissibility and they put diplomatic pressure on the UK to keep its borders open to stop China losing face. Having let the virus escape its borders China then made huge profits selling faulty medical equipment to countries abroad. And at the moment China is moving heaven and earth to rewrite history itself, claiming the virus came from outside China and that China is a victim of the West. In fact, not only did the virus come from Wuhan but there is reason to believe it came from the Wuhan Virology Institute, either by accident or design. Of course, the World Health Organisation have only just been allowed to visit the food market the virus reportedly originated from so you can bet any useful evidence has been destroyed. Suffice to say, if you genuinely cared about the handling of Covid the Tories would not be your first port of call. On the other hand, if you were just looking for an excuse to Tory bash then fill your boots. The second part of your foreword is a segue into the virtues of Marxism, which is ironic given that the country in the world most heavily influenced by Marxist political philosophy is China. Of course, it’s not all bad in China. They have an increasingly high standard of living and – wouldn’t you know it- that is down to China partly embracing capitalism. But that’s not as ironic as your magazine, which being mostly full of trading adverts is a beacon for capitalism in the local community, despite its foreword, and either pays your way or gives you a platform to shout: down with capitalism! Last but not least, in China they pay citizens 50 cents to write something positive about China or negative about the West and I hope they’ve paid you. Otherwise, that would be exploiting the workers, wouldn’t it? A bit like Boxer in Animal Farm? There’s nothing a Communist leader loves more than getting a loyal carthorse who hates capitalism to work unpaid... And no, I’ve never voted Tory. Or UKIP.

Why Welsh Independence? Let’s reframe the question and ask - ‘why not?’. Centuries of Westminster rule have left Wales as one of the poorest nations in western Europe, and the only country without a single mile of electrified railway! Our needs are ignored, falling on deaf ears in London, where we are seen as a region, not a country. Other countries of a similar size, such as Ireland, Estonia and Iceland, have prospered as independent nation states, and so too can Wales.
About YesCymru YesCymru campaigns for an independent Wales. We are a grassroots, non-party political movement. We believe it is time for Wales to take control of its future as an independent self-governing nation. WE CAN be a confident, outward-looking country that represents itself on the world stage. WE ARE BIG ENOUGH, and WE HAVE THE TALENT, the creativity and the resources to stand on our own two feet. It’s time for Wales to step up.

EICH AS DROS GASTELL-NEDD | YOUR MS FOR NEATH
In the last few weeks we have seen the heroic efforts of health, care and other workers in Wales and volunteers deliver one of the most efficient Covid vaccination programmes in the world. Having met the first target, the plan is to vaccinate all the nine priority groups by the end of April. We should all be proud of that progress, and grateful to all those involved. It gives us hope that better times lie ahead. Throughout the last five years of this Senedd term, I have campaigned for investment in the NHS, in mental health services and in care services, all of which have come under incredible pressure in the last year. I am pleased that we have seen significant support for each of these under the Welsh Labour government. They are vital services and a Welsh Labour government will always protect them.
Yn ystod yr wythnos ddiwethaf rydym wedi gweld ymdrechion arwrol gweithwyr iechyd, gofal a gwirfoddolwyr i ddarparu un o'r rhaglenni brechu Covid mwyaf effeithlon yn y byd. Ar ôl cyrraedd y targed cyntaf, y cynllun yw brechu pob un o'r naw grŵp gyda blaenoriaeth erbyn diwedd Ebrill. Dylai pob un ohonom fod yn falch o'r cynnydd hwnnw, ac yn ddiolchgar i bawb sy'n gysylltiedig. Mae'n rhoi gobaith inni fod amseroedd gwell o'n blaenau. Trwy gydol pum mlynedd y tymor Senedd hwn, rwyf wedi ymgyrchu dros fuddsoddi yn y GIG, mewn gwasanaethau iechyd meddwl ac mewn gwasanaethau gofal, y mae pob un ohonynt wedi dod o dan bwysau anhygoel yn ystod y flwyddyn ddiwethaf. Rwy’n falch ein bod wedi gweld cefnogaeth sylweddol i bob un o’r rhain o dan lywodraeth Lafur Cymru. Maent yn wasanaethau hanfodol a bydd llywodraeth Lafur yng Nghymru bob amser yn eu hamddiffyn.

Need advice? Antonina is here to help!
Dear Antonina, I am so upset because my dog died last month. Motty had been with me for over 11 years and he was always there through good times and bad times. I have lived on my own for 25 years and got him as a rescue pet after my last dog died. He was my best friend. Motty had not been well for about 2 years and was used to our vet who was marvellous with him. But when I had to take him in on an emergency appointment it all felt so inhumane. The emergency vet wasn’t my usual one and I wasn’t allowed to go in with him into the vets and Motty was very nervous. I had to ring and wait for the vets to take Motty in and then I had to wait in the car for a long time while I waited for the vets to do their assessment and tests. I was in the car for ages freezing and worrying. When the fatal call came that there was nothing which could be done, I had to make the decision on the phone, that it was best to put him down. I was not allowed to say goodbye properly or at least to have stroked his face and calm him. So he went out of this world alone with strangers and not with his best friend at his side. It is not the vets’ fault they were following guidelines. I know its normal to be upset but I am really angry and resent the way I was forced to say goodbye. It keeps going over and over in my mind and it consumes my thoughts every day. Della
Dear Della
60
I am sorry to hear that Motty has passed away especially if you had such a special relationship and had spent a few years together. Animals become part of our family and just like members of our families, or close friends we really care about, it is normal to grieve the fact that he has passed on and you will not be seeing him physically anymore. Grieving can be a painful process but is a natural part of life. Although people talk about death it is still a taboo subject in the UK. Many of the clients who I help to work through the grieving process say they start out not really understanding what it is they are feeling and why. One of the helpful tools I help them to recognise are the different stages of grief/emotions which you will pass through: shock & denial, pain & guilt, anger and bargaining, depression, reflection and loneliness, acceptance & hope, reconstruction working through. These emotions can be intense
and are not necessarily moved through in a linear way. It is important that you take the time to move through the emotions and be kind to yourself. Added to the grief you are experiencing you describe the inability to control the way in which you said goodbye and it is understandable that this would add to your sadness. There are a great many people who have been unable to say goodbye to their loved ones (be they pets or human) especially due to the situation during the past year. Rest assured you are not alone with these feelings. The internet is a good place to look for support. Amongst the many pet charities which give advice there are pet counselling services also available. I look forward to helping you decide which is the best way forward for you when you take up your free consultation. It sounds as if Motty had a very loving home and was lucky to have you in his life. There is much research on the therapeutic qualities of the interaction between humans and animals and perhaps when the time is right you could consider giving another pet a good home and friend. Antonina Please note this letter has been edited, name changed and paraphrased to ensure anonymity. Each month the author of the published letter will receive a free consultation with AMendola Hypnotherapy. Email your letters to antonina@communitymag.co.uk or write to the usual address.

Potato, Chickpea & Spinach Curry
Of all the curry dishes I make this one is my absolute favourite. Not only does it have layer upon layer of flavour, it gets better over the next day or two and is just as delicious cold as hot. The core spice mix, Panch Phoron, can be bought or easily be made up by mixing equal quantities of Fenugreek seed, Nigella seed, Black Mustard seed, Cumin seed and Fennel seed. There is no need to grind the seeds, just mix and use whole. This gives two hearty portions, but it’s easy to double up or more. INGREDIENTS Approx 250g Baby Potatoes 400g Tin of Chopped Tomatoes 400g Tin of Chick Peas 1 Tbl Panch Phoron 5 Green Finger Chillies (or to taste) Fresh or frozen Spinach 1 large teaspoon of English Mustard A pinch of salt, and a pinch of sugar 1 Tbl Sunflower oil
Heat the oil over a medium/high heat before adding the chillies and the panch phoron. Fry this out for a minute, then add the chopped tomatoes, using your spatula to break down any large or hard chunks. Add the pinch of sugar and salt. If you are using frozen spinach, add this now (two blocks is about right for me).
Cook out the tomatoes until you can no longer see clean oil around them, about 4 If you are not using leftover boiled or 5 minutes. Stir in the English Mustard. potatoes, par-boil the potatoes, skin on, Add the chickpeas and potatoes and stir until almost ready to eat. Drain and set through, cooking until they are thoroughly aside. warmed through. Drain and rinse the chickpeas. That’s it - it really couldn’t be any simpler! Using your knife, put a large split Serve on it’s own or with flatbreads, or lengthways into each of the chillies, but even a dollop of natural yoghurt. leave them intact. Phil 63
