Editor’s Foreword WHAT DO YOU GET IF YOU TAKE THE REBELLION OUT OF ‘EXTINCTION REBELLION’? How do you ‘ban’ a rebellion? It’s a curious thing, isn’t it? OK, in this instance, it’s more a protest than genuine rebellion, but the act of banning it is one that should have us all worried about who we have in authority. The banning of peaceful protest is not the act of a democratic state, but one of fascism. But this government are now talking about sanctioning the benefits of recipients who are protesting. This is two messages in one; benefits claimants are only on benefits by choice (untrue) and benefits claimants do not have the right to exercise their democratic rights. When Boris Johnson labelled the Extinction Rebellion protestors “uncooperative crusties” he knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s whistling to the, shall we say, less critically-thinking members of society (coincidentally the same demographic that he nods to with his thinly veiled racism and xenophobia). But protest has a strong track record of achieving change, and whether or not you like it, we should all be glad that there are people who are willing to stand up and fight authority without resorting to violence and riots. I don’t doubt that it may well be frustrating if their protest impacts on your life and you have to deal with it. That is the point, though, isn’t it? As aggravating as it may be, if the scientific community (who are firmly behind Extinction Rebellion) are correct in their predictions then being late for work is going to be the very least of our worries. We are now in a world where a serial liar leads the UK, supported by people who are willing to overlook his dishonesty if it covers up the fact that they were misled and lied to. The US has the serial liar king – a man who is banned from running charities in New York after being caught skimming from a children’s cancer charity! – and he is currently causing war and death around the world with apparent impunity. How did we reach such a low point that morality is no longer a consideration in public life? I don’t mean an overbearing pious zeal, just that basic common decency that we see every day in almost everyone we meet. It’s not a special gift, it’s a basic tenet of living in a community (oops, there’s that word the Thatcherites don’t like). Why, then, do we allow these people to rule over us? They display the very worst aspects of human nature; selfishness, greed, ambition, dishonesty… the list goes on and on. Not only do we allow this to happen, many of us are actively helping their cause. Look at the abuse being meted out at Greta Thunberg. Grown men acting like playground bullies because they don’t like the message she’s giving. People like Trump and Johnson are never going to suddenly enact any change that will require even a small dent in the fortunes of their class. They will happily watch poor nations and communities drown in the sea before relenting their oil profits. Only a fool can’t see that if climate change isn’t addressed, their money will become of little use to them. The real question is why, now, do you think their money is of any use to you?

DofE GOLD AWARD FOR GRUELLING EXPEDITION
A group of five young people with additional learning needs have successfully achieved their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. The group, all from Neath Port Talbot, completed a 4-day expedition in the rough and remote terrain of the Brecon Beacons. To complete the expedition, the group had to walk up to 10 hours a day, covering more than 60km, all while carrying a ruck-sack full of equipment. Plus, they had to make their own food, set up camp, and navigate their way to various destinations using only a map and compass. The Duke of Edinburgh Award was created for young people to gain essential skills for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication, and enhancing CVs. It was organised by (left to right): Courtney, Liam, Alana, Kathryn, Rhys in the Brecon Beacons the Neath Port Talbot Open Gold Centre, which is a part of the Council’s Youth Service. The Centre supported the group to prepare for and complete the expedition. Neil Hapgood, Development Officer for Neath Port Talbot Council’s Youth Service, said: “After completing an 8-month training programme, it was truly inspiring to see how the group supported each other through the ups and downs. “Everyone showed incredible perseverance and determination to see the expedition through, all while fighting their own battle to stay positive and keep going to the finish line.” More than 600 young people aged between 14 and 24 from across all schools in Neath Port Talbot take part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme every year. Over the last 5 years, an average of 80% of young people successfully completed the award which is 31% higher than the national average of 49%. The option to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award is made available to all secondary schools and is also available via a range of youth organisations. Councillor Peter Rees, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, said: “I’d like to congratulate the group on their superb achievement.”

FOR AUGUST 2020
Photograph: ‘Gorse in Bloom’ by Jeanine Bishopp (taken before lockdown). If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to phil@communitymag.co.uk
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
After a mostly favourable Summer 2020 weather-wise so far, the final third of the season will continue the encouraging theme. Both June and July offered us chiefly settled and warm conditions, and not only that, but delivering such weather for sustained periods of time and not just a short run of days. August looks set to continue this pattern, with a probable lean towards the second half of the month presenting us with the most stability as we head into September. Expect at times some very warm, possibly hot temperatures, and the associated risk that these values bring with thunderstorm activity ensuing. After the middle part of the month, a settling down phase with dry and settled weather, and more endurable temperatures as opposed to challenging heat. Overall, a drier than average month with temperatures on or around the average. Jonathan Powell, Sunday July 12th 2020

SIGN UP FOR A FREE ‘TIME TEAM’ STYLE ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG TO PROBE THE PAST!
A “Time Team” style archaeological dig will take place later this year in Neath’s Craig Gwladus Woods to investigate the past of the site’s once booming former colliery and blacksmith’s forge. You are invited to take part in the exciting week-long dig, which like Channel 4’s long running archaeological investigation programme, will be a “hands on” approach to uncovering and recording historical secrets. Archaeologists from the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust will be guiding participants in the Craig Gwladus Woods dig, dates for which will be confirmed in the next few weeks. Volunteers will be able to sign up for a day’s place or more on the dig. The drift mines of Gelliau Colliery operated at Craig Gwladus during the late 19th Century. It is rumoured that up to 50 ponies worked on the site at one time, pulling the heavy coal drams. The “Smithy” housed the blacksmith whose task would have been to shoe the many ponies working the site, keeping them fit for their long days of work. The dram road is now a well-used walking route through the woodland. It is hard to imagine the bustle of ponies, drams and workers and the dirty, coal-filled air in this now beautifully tranquil, leafy setting. Whether you are a budding archaeologist or just excited about the opportunity to be involved, there will be many benefits to taking part in the dig. Archaeological tasks will teach participants about techniques needed for excavation, recording, surveying, handling and interpreting bodies of data, which are transferable skills, and could even help to boost self-confidence. Just being in the woods can be a tonic for the soul and mind. This is an unusual opportunity to be part of something special without having to pay a penny. No prior experience is needed, just interest and enthusiasm. To register your interest, please email Lisa at L.Kirman@ npt.gov.uk. Places will be issued on a first-come-first-serve basis. The dig will take place over the week beginning 18th November 2019. ...>> 25

Cllr Rachel Powell, Portfolio Holder for Children and Culture, said: “We are very grateful to everyone who took part in all of the consultation meetings or sent us their ideas online, by post or through the libraries. We had a tremendous response overall, and have been left in no doubt how much residents value their libraries for the wide range of services and support which are available. “We will be considering further all of the views given, to prepare plans for the future and are in discussions with various interested parties to try and work on solutions for each of the branches so we can make the savings needed but continue to sustain the library service. Given the current economic situation for the council, there can be no doubt that the future will remain very challenging, and we will continue to need your help to provide valued services in partnership. If you have any further suggestions for your local library, or are able to provide sponsorship or practical help and support, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your local library.” The key findings from the report are that people value public libraries for a variety of reasons including: • access to free computers • book and video loans • story time sessions, coding clubs and the summer reading challenge activities for children • advice and information from the librarians who double up as council customer service officers. In addition, libraries are seen as safe and social places for people to use and deemed important in supporting those who may be more vulnerable in society. Respondents also rated the volunteers who have been supporting the service and keeping libraries open for longer. Ideas to save money or bring in money included hiring out space, running more community activities, selling library related products like reading glasses etc., seeking partnership funding and sponsorship deals with local companies etc. All ideas have been logged and will be considered on a branch-by-branch basis.

YSTRADGYNLAIS RESIDENT GIVEN FIXED PENALTY
An Ystradgynlais resident has been fined for dumping household waste in street litter bins in the town. The £75 fixed penalty, which has been paid, was issued for using the wrong container for domestic waste, in breach of a formal section 46 Environmental Protection Act 1990 notice. Waste enforcement officers investigated a number of street bins in Ystradgynlais after receiving complaints that domestic refuse was being dumped and found domestic waste including laundry detergent bottles, four milk bottles, pet bedding and correspondence. A number of residents were identified and advised in writing and during visits that the practice was not acceptable and encouraged to use recycling facilities. However, one offender continued to dump material and was served with a section 46 Notice. The notice gives the council the power to specify specific types of containers for domestic waste and recycling (designated receptacles) and enforce how they are to be used. The legal notice specified that the resident must use the recycling boxes for recyclable material and only use their own domestic wheelie bin for their domestic refuse. Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Heulwen Hulme said; “Most residents in Powys recycle every week and use their waste and recycling containers as designed. However, when residents don’t, particularly when that action results in environmental problems, we can take legal action. “We want residents to recycle more and help keep Powys a clean, green, attractive place for residents and visitors. We are happy to advise and educate if needed but will take legal action if necessary,” she added.

New ‘talk in’ sessions for parents with any concerns over their child’s speech and language development are being introduced to the Lower Swansea Valley. The initiative, by Swansea Bay University Health Board’s Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy team, follows reports that in some areas of the country up to 50 percent of children are experiencing delays in their language development. In an attempt to reverse the trend the sessions are designed to offer advice and support to parents while aiming at catching any potential problems at the earliest stage possible. The scheme is being trialled in the Cwmtawe Cluster - a group of three GP surgeries, namely Strawberry Place in Morriston, Cwmtawe Medical Group, which is made up of Clydach Primary Care Centre, Sway Road Surgery and New Cross Surgery in Morriston, and Llansamlet Surgery – with the aim of rolling it out to all eight Swansea Bay clusters in the near future. Sue Koziel, lead speech and language therapist, said: “In some areas 50 percent of children are showing delays in their language but most children will improve if we can just tweak the environment around them and the way in which adults talk to children, they do need to hear those words to develop them.” Explaining the reasoning behind the new advice sessions she said: “Our aim is to try to filter and identify the children. The ones who have transient difficulties, these are straight forward delays that are going to improve by changing the environment and exposing them to good language models. “And then there is a small group of children who are going to have more persistent difficulties. They are at risk of difficulties in the longer term. We want to identify these children so we can start to put plans and support in place. “The idea is to hold a ‘talk in’ session for parents to access in their local community, to give them some advice and support if they have any concerns around their children’s early language development. “We are focusing on under-fives as there’s been a lot of work done on the importance of getting children ready for school. ICAN which is the children’s communication charity, has highlighted that a lot of school leaders recognise the fact that children are coming into school not ready with their speech and language. Children need to
speech and language sessions learn to talk and talk to learn.” The sessions are free with the only stipulation being parents should telephone first to book an appointment. Sue said: “If any parents have any concerns they need to book into the session and they will be given a 15 minute slot and two therapists will be there, one will talk to the parent the other will play with the child and have eyes on the child to get a sense of how that child’s speech and language development is progressing. “We can then either reassure or give the parent some tips, or will be able to go out and support the parent with some adult child interaction sessions in the home. Or, if the child is looking as though they are at risk of more persistent speech and language difficulties they will arrange for a specialist speech and language assessment.” Mary Ritchie, also a speech and language therapist, said: “It’s fun, there will be toys, it’s not a test, the children will just come and play, but because we have very experienced members of staff, they will be able to see exactly what’s needed to support the children and families. “If we spot any difficulties it could be that we offer the parents support in their own home or, if we feel that more assessment is needed, we would arrange an appointment to assess the child further to see what needs to be done.” Sian Williams, also part of the team, added that it was not just about how a child sounds. She said: “Lots of people think we only see children with speech difficulties, however when children are under three we concentrate on ensuring they are understanding the language they hear around them and are able to communicate their needs. A lot of the time, for the really young ones, they may not have started saying words yet and we can help support parents to encourage their talking. “Children start using their first words when they are around the age of one. By the time children are two years old they should be using around 50 or more words and start to link these together.” To find out when the next session is taking place and to book an appointment call 01792 517863

LOOKING AFTER OUR SENIOR PETS IN THEIR GOLDEN YEARS Pt2 How to Look After a Senior Pet - Ageing isn’t the same as flipping on a switch - it is a slow, gradual process, with different aspects of your pet ageing at different rates. This means that there won’t be one day when you say “right, today I’ll treat Rover like an old dog!” What we mean by this is that changes should made over time; introducing new things too fast or changing habits overnight can actually cause more harm than good. All of the changes listed below should be made slowly, unless there is a specific reason advised by your vet. As pets get older, their metabolisms tend to slow down. This means that their bodies are not as efficient at utilising the energy they gain from food, so it is stored as fat. Older pets tend to be less energetic too, meaning energy that was once burned off quickly on long walks now is retained in their body. This all leads to obesity, which is a very big problem in pets. Obesity leads to a number of other diseases that can make their health very poor, including heart issues, liver problems, diabetes, joint problems, and more. It can be very difficult to slim down fat pets, so it is always better to prevent them gaining too much weight - we recommend switching senior pets onto a senior diet that contains fewer calories while still providing the nutrients they need (we will talk more about this later). They may also need less food in general, which includes restricting treats! However, not all pets gain weight in their old age - some do the opposite and start losing weight, which can be just as bad as weight gain. An underweight pet’s body will start to use their muscle and other tissue for energy instead, and they can waste away quite dramatically. Often there is an underlying cause, such as hyperthyroidism in cats, diabetes, or Cushing’s disease. If you notice your pet losing weight quickly in their old age, let us know so we can make sure nothing is amiss. Similar to weight gain, their diet might have to be adjusted to one that is more calorie dense. As we’re on the topic of weight, we will talk about diet in general. As a pet ages, their body becomes less efficient at digesting food, especially protein and fat (this is because the organs responsible for processing these, the liver and kidney, do not work as well as a pet gets older), which can cause problems for many parts of their bodies. Senior foods will often contain higher quality protein and less fat, to make sure their kidneys and liver don’t get overworked. As well as that, they contain various vitamins and minerals that help maintain joints, the heart, the skin and coat, and many other parts of a senior dog or cat’s body. Mention senior food next time you visit, and we can help you choose the right one for your senior pet. Sick of stiff joints on cold mornings? - It happens to old dogs and cats too. Arthritis and other joint diseases become a lot more common as a pet ages. Arthritis causes stiffness, pain, swelling and a reluctance to move. In extreme cases, the joints can be seriously damaged, requiring surgery to repair them. Sadly, arthritis cannot be avoided, but it can be managed and its negative effects reduced. Senior diets mentioned above often have supplements to help joints, or the supplements can be added to a normal diet separately. It may be worth considering reducing their exercise intensity too, keeping it light and easy. Be wary though, as too little exercise can lead to obesity, which can actually make arthritis worse; don’t let them become a couch potato! Around the house, you can also reduce the stress on their aching joints by giving them plenty of nice soft bedding to lay on, and helping them up and down stairs, or even not letting them go upstairs at all. Chronic arthritis can also be treated medically with drugs. Probably one of the biggest areas of disease in elderly pets, and one of the most important, is their head. Pet noggins contain many organs and are responsible for all their important senses, so it is important to try and keep it a healthy area. Vision tends to get worse in animals as they age, but there are also problems that occur that aren’t so normal - if there is any evidence of irritation, swelling, discharge or pain, it may be worth letting us know. You may also notice their hearing is also not as keen as before, or their ears are a bit greasy, smelly or oozy, in which case some investigation might be useful. Opening wide, elderly pet’s teeth are often a big problem too, with bad breath indicating an unhealthy mouth - dental problems can cause immense pain and often spread to other areas of the head, so having regular dental checks is important. Keep a close eye on your pet’s eyes, ears and teeth, as make sure any small problems are investigated before they become big!

Changes in behaviour Many older animals seem to become more “rigid” or “set in their ways” - that’s the origin of the phrase “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” in fact! However, we now know that older animals are capable of learning throughout life - and this change in behaviour may be the sign of “Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome” or “Senile Dementia”. Typical signs are distress, fixed routines (or, conversely, inability to follow their normal routine), loss of taught behaviours, including toilet training, and body clock disturbances. Fortunately, if caught early, there are now medications that can help to improve matters and slow down the deterioration. Final Thoughts All of the above are just a small number of the things you should be thinking about as your pet gets older. To make your job easier, we recommend visiting us at least once a year for a general check-up (possibly more frequently if they have any illnesses), so we can be on the lookout for any problems, give advice on keeping them comfy, and just generally make sure everything is okay. You could tie this in with regular booster vaccines, as unvaccinated old pets are just as susceptible to these diseases as young ones are, so don’t forget them! For almost all elderly issues, prevention is better than cure, and spotting anything amiss early will often lead to a better outcome. We sadly cannot halt ageing, but with a little extra attention, some changes here and there, and regular visits to the vets, you can go a long way to making sure your senior pet’s Golden Years are healthy and happy.

Friends of Bethania / Ffrindiau Bethania Glynneath
48
Inspired by the recent success of the collaboration between Blaenafon Town Council and the members of Bethel Baptist chapel in the repurposing of the historic building for community use, a group of Glynneath residents got together to form the Friends of Bethania. This imposing building, previously a Methodist chapel, situated in a prominent position at the heart of Glynneath is currently owned by the Town Council. It houses the Council’s meeting room, the Town Clerk’s office as well as a thriving and popular Community cafe. It is another example of the ‘essential part of the Welsh urban landscape’, as described in Anthony Jones’s book ‘Welsh Chapels’. He writes that ‘Welsh streets are littered with the decomposing hulks of...hundreds of abandoned Bethels and Bethesdas.’ This wasn’t a fate the Friends wanted for their Grade 2 listed building. Mindful of the cost of maintaining the chapel with limited civic funding, the Friends hope to support the Council in preserving this example of our uniquely Welsh heritage. The recent condition survey, carried out by the most eminent surveyor of heritage buildings in Wales, was reassuring in the sense that, although some fairly minor repair to the roof and the decorative ceiling was required, for a 114 year old building, it is wearing well. Glynneath is fortunate in having access to many community funds to which it can apply This would alleviate the pressure on civic funds in the restoration and maintenance of the building which falls on the Council, as its owner. Being of architectural importance, it could apply for grants from the major Heritage lottery funds. Cadw has been on board with suggestions for funding and support, reassuring us that the Lottery fund is keen to give generous grants for just his kind of community based project. The Friends hope to work in partnership with Cadw, NPT council and Town Council to preserve the imposing body of the chapel for future generations as a community venue for a variety of events. Glynneath’s historic buildings have all been lost in recent times. Since the 1970s, it has seen the ruination of Aberpergwm House, Maes Gwyn House, as well as its Miners’ Welfare Hall. Determined that the sight of this majestic chapel boarded up with an ugly For Sale sign attached to its listed railings wouldn’t be seen in our town, this dedicated group of residents set about forming the Friends of Bethania to fight for its survival. The purchase by the Reverend Robert Stivey of twelve chapels in the RCT area to save them from neglect, has been welcomed. Residents look forward to their revival as assets to their towns and villages. Could it be that this year sees the tide turning against the apathy towards the demise of these buildings that we have taken for granted? We are indeed fortunate that in the past, Glynneath Town Council chose to play its part in preserving our history, and purchased the chapel on its closure some years ago. It has made a fine start in creating an enviable community venue. Anthony Jones points out that the Welsh must remember that these chapels weren’t just places of worship, reflecting the religious fervour that saw them built, but that they ‘influenced social, political and cultural thinking.’ The miners used their welfare halls for their education and socialising, but they frequented their chapels on Sunday. They represent as much of our heritage as the old mine workings, kilns and railways that litter our landscape, whether we use them as places of worship or not any more. They deserve recognition as part of our past, and a legacy for our children who will wonder at our lack of foresight in not cherishing them. If you are reading this from some far-flung corner of the world, having been sent this magazine from your homeland, please send your support for Bethania as a memorial to all those chapels you remember in your youth that now lie empty. Please send your support by ‘Liking and Friending’ our Facebook page Friends of Bethania/Ffrindiau Bethania –or why not join us? Leo – Keep going with plans for individual projects, as you will have the right kind of responses at this time from people who want to help you succeed. Anything creative or inventive that you want to get off the ground will go well. Be practical with your ideas and plans. The new moon in this part of your chart on the 26th highlights the vision you have and gives you the opportunity to begin something you have wanted to do for some time, so go ahead. Virgo – You are assertive regarding finances, and you are single minded in your plans to put things right. If you have let things slip, now you can make amends and create long term plans. The new moon falls in your home zone on the 26th and makes an ideal time to draw a line underneath the past and make a new start both in a practical sense and in terms of your close relationships. Libra – You are confident and full of energy especially until the 19th of this month. You think about money and financial concerns in a positive way. You want to get any loose ends sorted out and keep everything manageable. By keeping your incomings and outgoings balanced, you become more settled. The full moon falls in your joint finance zone on the 19th and this pushes you to make any necessary adjustments here. Scorpio – Mercury in your sign enables you to make good contacts with others and get your opinions heard. This is good both for socializing and for work. Mars in your own sign after the 19th makes you more assertive and motivated to get on with plans. The new moon in your finance zone on the 26th gets you wanting to try a new way of handling money, possibly getting a second income or investing or saving. 53
Sagittarius – A good month ahead for you with plenty of harmonious aspects giving you drive and motivation. You are confident and positive. Help and support comes from friends and associates. The new moon in your own sign on the 26th gives you new ideas and brings in a new personal start. It certainly feels like a new chapter and you want to put problems behind you and look forward to new beginnings. Capricorn – The full moon in your romance and new ventures zone helps you to conclude certain projects that have come to their natural end. Now you can move forward. Venus in your own sign after the 26th this month adds a willingness to socialize more and make new friends. You will want to regenerate and restore yourself with new interests. Being a cardinal sign makes you restless, so you like changes. Aquarius – Your career at the start of the month and new friendships after the middle of the month keep you busy over the next few weeks. You may require diplomacy at work, as some of your associates are jealous of you. Tact is the best solution. Meeting new friends with the new moon in this part of your chart comes quite naturally. You find things in common with others and share common goals. Pisces – A good time for work projects, new ideas. You find that things are going better than expected. You still have good influences in your career zone and get a lot of support and help from family and friends. The new moon in this part of your chart on the 26th is an ideal time for you to begin projects and handle things in new ways. You feel inspired and in tune. You deal with everything and everyone with flair and style.

As summer is now here , and things begin to return to something a little closer to normal, many are spending some time tending to family memorials. I thought I would touch a little on the upkeep and maintenance of memorials. Lettering, if cut into granite, is most often finished in silver or gold leaf. Never be tempted to scratch or wipe into the letters, as this could damge the leaf or paint. If your letters are in lead, whether raised or flush, speak to a memorial mason before attempting to clean them. Highly polished granite is easily cleaned with some soapy water or glass cleaner. Seek advice for the specific memorial before attempting to clean marble, Forest of Dean or rustic granite, and if any doubt ask a memorial mason.
