Editor’s Foreword A VERY UN-BRITISH COUP! As divisive as Brexit is and has been, and regardless of how you feel about it, it has remarkably become not the most dangerous thing in British politics anymore! May’s long awaited resignation had to come in the end, and the two buffoons left in the race to be PM was less than inspiring even to many in the Tory ranks, but we had to end up with one of them. All as expected and, in itself, not too surprising or worrying. The fact that our politics is run more by convention than constitution allows the new party leader to become PM, a quirk of our system that looks wholly bizarre to the outside world. All of that aside, things take a dark turn. The appointment of Dominic Cummings, and then more and more of the most right wing elements of the Conservative Party have more than raised eyebrows. It was only days before they started to claim that they’d refuse to leave if they lost a vote of no confidence. We are in the middle of a right-wing global coup, make no mistake. It should concern all of us. I believe that many people who don’t empathise with the left think that the fascism we talk about can’t really happen here in the UK. But I bet a few years ago they’d have thought it couldn’t happen in the US either, and look where they are now. Children being forcibly removed from immigrant parents and detained in cages. Over 3000 immigrant children have gone missing from these detention centres, to god only knows what end. Parents deported back to Mexico without their children. A president that gives white supremacist hand signals during his speeches, not that his speeches leave his racism in any doubt. US citizens ‘sent home’ to countries they’ve never set foot in, with some dying as a consequence. That last bit should sound particularly familiar, because it’s happened here under the Windrush scandal (which is still going on but is no longer deemed ‘newsworthy’ by our right wing media). The money and resources that have enabled this coup have come from some very dark sources; white supremacist Steve Bannon, Arron Banks (probably funnelled through him from Russia) and many complex and unidentifiable channels. Farage is actively encouraging more of such funding again. Rumours are that our government are hiring ‘Security Firms’ (that’s night club bouncer suppliers) to police our streets in case of civil unrest post Brexit. Then, in Neath, a man puts up a large Nazi Swastika flag on his house, presumably because the climate being created by our politicians and media tell him that this is acceptable to do. I don’t believe that many people that are more to the right envisage any of this as part of their political viewpoint, but all of us need to understand that what is being presented as ‘right wing’ is actually the extreme right. Keeping silent will only help them. It is time for all of us to speak out against what is happening. Until next time...
Phil

FLY-TIPPING FINE ISSUED TO YSTRADGYNLAIS RESIDENT
Dumping rubbish by flats has cost an Ystradgynlais resident £200 after they were fined by Powys County Council. Now the council is warning the public that they could be fined if their waste is found fly-tipped in the county. The latest fine was issued by the council’s Waste Awareness and Enforcement Team, which investigated four black bags of rubbish that were dumped by flats on the Pen Y Bryn estate in Ystradgynlais in March. The investigation started following a complaint from residents that rubbish had been dumped round the back of their flats in the communal drying and recycling area. The dumped rubbish was searched by an enforcement officer, who discovered paperwork amongst the rubbish that linked it back to a resident several streets away. Interviewed under caution, the suspected implicated their partner as having dumped the rubbish near the flats. They received a £400 fine under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. They accepted the fine and paid £200, as an early repayment option is available if the fine is paid within 14 days. Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member Recycling and Waste, said: “When investigating fly-tipping incidents, it is often the case that suspects say they have excess rubbish. In this case, an examination of the waste found that most of it consisted of paper, plastic and food waste which are all collected at the kerbside every week. If people make full use of our weekly kerbside collection service, this really helps to reduce the amount of rubbish created in the first place. “For waste that can’t be recycled, householders should use their own blacked wheel bin or purple sacks to dispose of these items. Alternatively, householders can use their nearest household waste recycling centre. “We need to reinforce the message that fly-tipping is a criminal offence that harms the environment and costs taxpayers’ money when it has to be cleared up. We will clamp down on those who dispose of their waste illegal by stepping up our enforcement activities. “We hope this will act as a warning to show that we will investigate this anti-social behaviour and take the appropriate enforcement action.”

REMORTGAGING YOUR HOME Mortgages can often seem like a lifelong commitment with agreements that typically last 25 years or more. In a market with fluctuating interest rates, fixed term offers and new products being introduced it is always wise to consider the prospect of re-mortgaging your home.
We advise on:
There are a number of reasons to consider re-mortgaging. It may be to release equity in your home, take advantage of an offer associated to a new product or maybe you are approaching the expiration of your fixed term resulting in you paying a higher variable rate than you were previously. Whatever the reason, we at Jennifer Melly Law can help and below are some of the factors you should consider.
• Wills
Consider current mortgage conditions You will need to consider your current mortgage offer and the conditions contained therein. In certain circumstances an early repayment charge may apply. Typically, these will apply when you redeem your mortgage within the fixed term. This could eat in to the potential savings you were hoping to make by switching your mortgage product. Obtain an up to date statement It is also imperative that you investigate how much you currently owe as this will be essential when calculating for how much you will need to re-mortgage. Without this figure, you will not be able to make an accurate assessment of the products on offer and what is in your best interests.
• Long Term Care and Fees
• Powers of Attorney • Tax Advice • Buying and Selling a Property • Court of Protection Applications • Estate Administration • Trusts
Compare product in the market Finally, you will need to look at the market. Mortgages on offer fluctuate and so too do the interest rates associated with them. In order to assess whether it is worth you re-mortgaging, you should compare the offers available to that of your existing product. If you choose to proceed then you will need a solicitor to assist you and the lender. This will be to ensure that you are provided with the appropriate advice and that the lender also has its loan adequately secured against the property. Our fees for re-mortgaging start from just £300 plus VAT and disbursements. We also deal with the sale and purchase of properties. If you would like a tailored estimate then please contact Jennifer Melly Law for more information on 01639 630057 or email tom@jennifermellylaw.com .

SEVEN SISTERS VILLAGE EVENTS TEAM NEWS The newly formed Village Events Team has organised two community events since it was set up earlier this year, both of which were successful. “Planting at The Pit Wheels” was the first event. This was held on the morning of Sunday 28th April and thankfully the weather was sunny and mild that day which added to the overall enjoyment of the event. Team members and other volunteers all worked tirelessly to weed, dig and plant flowers in the two raised flower beds in the Pit Wheels garden. The children who participated in the event were very enthusiastic and seemed to enjoy the whole experience as much as the adults did. Have you walked through the Pit Wheels garden recently? If so you will know that the flowers planted at the event have been in full bloom for a few weeks, look beautiful and something everyone from the village can take pleasure in. Well worth a stroll through the garden if you’ve not seen them yet. Please feel free to pull a weed or two if passing through the garden!! Plants were kindly donated by Nia on behalf of Siop Nia and Tony on behalf of Costcutters so our thanks go to them for their support as the success of the event depended on their donations. “Village in Bloom Competion” was the second event with several categories which residents, community groups and buisinesses of the village could enter. The competition was sponsered by Tony & Nabeel Akhtar from Costcutters and Lyn Jenkins which enabled cash prizes to be awarded to the winners in each category. The judging of the entries was carried out on the 27th July, a very hot summer’s day, by Chief Judge Mr Lyn Jenkins and Events Team member Mr Peter Thornhill. The judges and team members were all impressed by the variety of gardens entered and the standards achieved, which did not make the judging easy and the final result was a very close one! Very well done to all the entrants - the hard work and thought gone into all the gardens was very evident. The prize winners for each category is as follows: Best Front Garden: 1st Sharon Preddy. 2nd Norman Preddy Best Hanging Baskets in Front Garden: 1st John Say. 2nd Norman Preddy Best Commercial Premises: St John’s Ambulance Chief Judges Award: St John’s Ambulance
16
The results were announced at the Community Centre on the evening of 30th July and winners were presented with their cash prizes and certificates, bringing members of the community together to chat abouth their gardening endeavors and celebrate the success of the event. The Team are planning to run both the above events annually and hope that residents will get on board by volunteering and/or participating to help us build up the community spirit in our village. If anyone would like to join the Events Team we meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 in the Community Centre. If you have any ideas for future events you would like to see run in the village or for more information please contact Carol at the Community Centre on 01639 701404.

FOR SEPTEMBER 2019
Photograph ‘A Blaze Of Pink’ by Jeanine Bishopp. If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to phil@communitymag.co.uk
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
September may well offer a settled start affording some late Summer sunshine across the region and pleasant temperatures to match. Values could well sit in the 20's during any early stable spell of weather. However, as the month progresses the likelihood of seeing the Atlantic take hold across Wales looks increasingly likely, with a series of low pressure systems potentially bedding in to create a running sequence that ultimately leads to a wet and windy second half of September, although perhaps not with temperatures overly compromised. That said, the balance won't totally be with the more changeable conditions as the month passes, and there should be some early autumn days late month that are free of rain and gales. Rainfall is expected to reflect the average for September, with a slightly warmer than average month. Jonathan Powell, Monday, August 12th 2019

Dear Phil, As CATCH moves into its seventh year of inactivity, may I, through your columns, thank everyone who has supported CATCH, be it by donations of food in kinds, cash, or reusable domestic items. Enough people have take us to their hearts to enable us to continue our work without anxieties about ‘supply’, whether of actual food donations in kind, or of cash to meet our running costs, and buy in key food items where we need to because of the actual level of demand, or because of an imbalance in free donations. But can I also make a further request to local people of goodwill? We do look at circumstances which most mcommonly bring to us for help, and we wonder; “Well, if they are in this situation, surely there are, what? 2, 3, 4 other individuals/famillies in our communities who are in the same boat, any given week?” In other words, we are pretty sure there are people whom we should be happy to help, who never come and ask us. Even if you do not need our support, please do encourage those who might need us to come and talk to us. Convey to them it’s OK to come, it’s not ‘charity’. It’s just the community looking after its own - and these days, many of us could suddenly find ourselves needing that support. Your Local Pharmacist - Just Did you know you can get free medication – prescription and over-thecounter – for 26 common ailments at your local pharmacist? Highly trained pharmacists – until recently a much underused arm of the NHS – have been empowered to provide services that are saving patients time and money, as well as taking pressure off overworked GPs. At many pharmacies – like The Health Dispensary on Windsor Road, Neath – you would be totally spoiled for choice with all the extra services they offer these days. They include flu vaccinations, stop smoking programmes, emergency contraception, and medicine reviews. One of the most popular, though, is the Common Ailments Scheme, which allows patients to be treated free of charge by their pharmacist for 26 minor ailments from acne and athlete’s foot to mouth ulcers and verrucae. Patients who have signed up for the Common Ailments Scheme really rate the convenience of not having to make an appointment to see their doctor and being able to get expensive over-the-counter medicines for free. Elizabeth Lawless, a pharmacist at The Health Dispensary, said: “Pharmacies are at the centre of the community and are often the first port of call for people when they have a health issue. These new services are taking pharmacy to a new level and giving pharmacists the chance to use their clinical knowledge to make sure patients make the best choices about their treatment.”
38
The Health Dispensary - owned by pharmacist and local girl Ali Sparkes - offers far more than just medicines, however. Their pioneering, holistic approach is so effective that they have won a raft of awards, including UK Pharmacy of the Year.
What The Doctor Ordered “It’s all part of our holistic, multi-disciplinary approach which puts the patient at the heart of what we do,” said Elizabeth Lawless. “We are a one-stop shop for health care and we place great emphasis on self-care by encouraging people to take responsibility for themselves, but we also offer guidance on what are the best choices for people. “We love to innovate and are always looking ahead. For example, we are the only pharmacy to have a 24-hour collection point. We load the medicines into the machine and text people a code so that they can come and collect them, without having to come inside the shop, at any hour of the day or night!” As well as the usual pharmacy staff, the dispensary also has therapists working from the premises who offer osteopathy, reflexology, acupuncture and counselling. The dispensary also runs a weight management clinic, a hearing clinic and health MOTs for blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes. With the help of a PhD student, they are also trialling a positive psychology programme. “Our ethos is to inspire people to become more healthy, happy and hopeful. We like people to leave with a smile on their face!” said Elizabeth. GP partner at the Dyfed Road Surgery, Neath, Dr Alistair Bennett, said: “Pharmacists are highly trained and skilled and I think there’s a huge role for them in getting involved in direct patient care. This is an area where people are very dependent on their doctors and we need to show them that, where appropriate, going to see a pharmacist instead is not a second class option. “The Common Ailments Scheme is a very good one that takes some of the pressure off GPs and it will be even better when more people realise that it is available.” • The 26 ailments covered by the Common Ailments Scheme are acne, athlete’s foot, back pain, chickenpox, cold sores, colic, conjunctivitis, constipation, diarrhoea, dry eyes, dermatitis, haemorrhoids, hay fever, head lice, indigestion, ingrowing toenails, ringworm, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, oral thrush, scabies, sore throat/ tonsillitis, teething, threadworms, vaginal thrush, and verrucae. 39

RABBIT AWARENESS - PART TWO This month we continue our column from the July issue: 3. Teeth - Dental problems are one of the most common reasons why your rabbit may need to see our vets. Rabbits’ teeth grow continuously so they need to grind them down by eating lots of hay or grass to stop them overgrowing. This is one reason why getting their diet right is so important. When the teeth get too long they become pointy and start to “dig in” to your rabbit’s gums and tongue, causing pain. This stops them from eating which is then life-threatening. If you see any of the following symptoms, make an appointment to see our vets immediately: - Decreased appetite - Decreased or smaller faeces - Drooling - Lethargy If your rabbit has problems with their teeth our vets can help treat them. We advise that every rabbit has an examination to check their teeth every 6 months (one of which can be with your vaccinations) so we can spot problems early and start treatment before your pet becomes ill. 4. Vaccinations - We currently vaccinate rabbits against Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) both of which are deadly viruses that in most cases cannot be treated. These diseases are so lethal that prevention is the best way to protect your rabbit which is why we recommend annual vaccinations. Presently, there are two vaccinations against RHD because there are two different forms of the virus (RHD1 and RHD2) and they require different vaccines to protect against them. Our current protocol is to vaccinate your rabbit for myxomatosis and RHD1 first, and then RHD2 two or more weeks later. These vaccines cannot currently be given at the same time as it makes them less effective. Our vets will of course give your rabbit a health check when they come in for their vaccine, which is a great time for us to check their teeth for you! 5. Bottoms - We know this seems like a weird topic but it’s actually very important! If your rabbit is producing less poop than normal this is usually one of the first indications that something is wrong and you should be contacting us for an appointment. Cleaning out their hutch daily helps you recognise this early, as well as making sure your rabbits stay clean and happy. It is also important to notice when their poop is too loose and sticking to them.

Normal healthy rabbits on a good diet should have nice clean bottoms. If your rabbit is getting diarrhoea then it may be a diet issue, but our vets can help check for other possible causes. We advise you pick up your rabbit twice a day to check that their bums are clean. This is particularly important during the warmer months when flies are around. Dirty bums attract flies which can then lay eggs on your rabbit. In warm weather the eggs can hatch into maggots within 24 hours, resulting in a disease called fly-strike. If you see eggs/maggots they need to be groomed out immediately before they burrow inside your pet. If you are concerned call the practice immediately for an appointment as fly-strike can be deadly if not treated right away. We hope you found our top five topics helpful and if you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to give us a call. Rabbits are wonderful pets and we will do our best to help you keep them happy and healthy.

Gas Safe registered plumbing service provided by A. E. Davies
This month I would like to talk a little about design work on memorials. It is very often the case that a customer wants a design to be created that either highlights a particular passion of their loved one, or perhaps shows a lifetime’s commitment to a particular job or profession. I have been asked to do all manner of designs; from a daisy for a lady called Daisy to a miner’s lamp for someone who had spent a long career underground (before you ask, yes – I want a headstone on my headstone!). If a design is relatively straight forward I will do it myself and I can do a wide range of both etched and painted designs, however it is important to know your limitations and there are some designs that really require an artist to do justice to the customer’s wishes. The difference that an artist will bring is, more often than not, in the areas of shading and painting and I have shown some examples that illustrate this. Whether the design is done by me in my workshop or an artist, you can be sure that we will do everything we can to ensure the design you choose is completed to the highest standards. Remember I am always happy to advise you on this and any other issue relating to memorial masonry.

COULD ‘THERMOPLASTIC REPAIR SYSTEM’ BE THE FUTURE OF POTHOLE FIXING?
Neath Port Talbot Council road repair crews have been trialling a new pothole repair method which uses a thermoplastic based substance instead of traditional tarmac. Initial results from the tests suggest the use of the new material could be faster, cleaner and less expensive. The new substance is “hot applied” to repair and preserve the condition of existing carriageway/footway surfaces. Compared to traditional methods of repair it is a speedy process and as there is no excavation required and the material is supplied in meltable bags which are placed directly into a boiler, there is little to no waste produced when undertaking a repair. A Council spokesman said: “In the trial, a total of two hundred and fifteen square metres was repaired in around two days using approximately three tonnes of material. “If this was done with the traditional ‘excavate and reinstate’ method this would have taken considerably longer, required approximately 21 tonnes of tarmac and would have produced a similar amount of spoil waste that would have needed tipping off.” The costs of the new material are higher than traditional hot tarmac. However, in the trials carried out in Neath Port Talbot, the coverage area per tonne worked out around seven times greater in the trial, making it overall, less expensive to use. Also, roads/footways being repaired using the new material could be used within just 20-30 minutes of being laid. Council officials will now continue to evaluate the new repair system following the successful trials. While main roads and motorways in England, Scotland and Wales are maintained by Highways England, Transport Scotland and the Welsh Government respectively, councils are responsible for the upkeep of local roads. Potholes - collapsed areas in the tarmac resulting from the pressure of traffic and bad weather - are a menace for motorcyclists, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians and give local authorities massive repair bills. Cllr Ted Latham, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering said: “It’s good to see we are looking at new, quicker and hopefully less expensive methods of dealing with potholes which are major issue for all local authorities and which cause problems for our motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.”

for AUGUST 2019 by Izabella Vlahavas Aries – Uranus in your money zone, brings surprizes and opportunities arise from unexpected sources. This gives you the chance to establish yourself. Slow progress is the best approach and you keep your sense of purpose central to your choices. Harmony and good communication in one to one partnerships helps support and sustain your efforts. The new moon in this part of your chart on the 28th marks new beginnings. Taurus – You are in a good head space with ideas about opening new horizons, and doing more than usual. It is very likely you are set on travel which includes social connections. There may be either delays or obstacles in this area, so use patience to handle yourself calmly even if you have to wait a bit longer than you planned. The full moon in your friendship zone ends situations that are no longer viable for you. Gemini – Lots of good communication with family and neighbours energizes you and gains you more confidence. You can afford to spend time at home or within an environment where you are getting the support you need to re-charge your batteries. This benefits all future endeavours. The new moon in your zone of personal ventures on the 28th inspires you to start a new project that you will really enjoy. Cancer – The coming weeks help you to stabilize and enjoy the rewards of your hard work over the summer months. You have activated plans, been methodical and attended to detail. Keep going and pushing for further success. You have much to gain in your new associations, and it is forward thinking that will open doors for you and keep you investing in the future. Some new feature at home may be sorted out for you around the 28th with the new moon in this part of your chart. Leo – A big financial investment and making things work well is key and you do make changes. Continue to use money wisely and be sensible. The generous nature of Leo is sometimes not the most practical. The new moon on the 28th falls in your communications zone so make the most of this if you feel that you have either stuff to sort out with someone or just need to get something out in the open. Virgo – Lots of new focus as it is your birthday month and there are many positive influences directly effecting you. You are keen to accomplish as much as you can. After the 14th an improvement in your finances. Mercury in this part of your chart gives you good ideas, perhaps new ways of dealing with things. A surprise trip or a visit from someone from abroad will be just what you need! Libra – You draw confidence and strength from the environment and feel happy with decisions you have made. A build-up of energy gives you the need to drive forward your travel plans and any new objectives surrounding family. It is to do with including them and giving them fair options. The new moon is in your sun sign on the 28th and it heralds a new beginning on a personal level. Scorpio – Money making plans are paying off. You feel like you have taken a few risks and put yourself out on a limb, but fortune favours the brave so keep going. A full moon on the 14th in your personal venture zone makes you put a hold on plans and you may have to start again or change course a little. You will feel ready again by the middle of the month and you can re-direct your focus. 53
Sagittarius – A very optimistic time for you with more to do than you can handle. Learning to prioritize and evaluate how you can best spend your time will help you, so be organized and stick to your plans. At home you are finding it difficult to communicate with close family. The full moon in this part of your chart on the 14th is a good time to sort out issues. A renewed focus on friendships and people to share plans and confidences with comes towards the end of this month. Capricorn – You have learnt how to handle practical and immediate concerns very efficiently and you feel calmer and more in control. The focus is on your career again especially after the 14th and the new moon in this part of your chart on the 28th will begin a new cycle of success for you. Travel has been in your plans or exchanges from abroad and learning new skills. This helps you. Aquarius – You may feel restricted but this is just a state of mind not a reality and it is stopping you from attaining your full capacity. Believe in yourself and you will find a way to do exactly what you want. The new moon in your travel zone spurs you into planning a trip. This will help you to open up new horizons and take you away from your comfort zone. New friendships will open new doors for you. Pisces – The full moon in your own sign on the 14th makes you want to establish boundaries. Perhaps an ending will bring a new beginning on a personal level or regarding something that is personal to you. This will free up your time and give you more options. It is a relief to get things sorted and in a new rhythm. The new moon falls in your joint finance zone on the 28th so it is very likely that an adjustment to money perhaps an investment will play a part in this.
