WELCOME
It’s gone a little bit festival crazy in Dorset! This month really does mark the start of the festival season. Living in Dorset we are surrounded by beautiful countryside, which also provides an excellent area for the tribal gatherings which frequent our county. From the long established headline events such as Bestival, to the up and coming local festivals, there is something for everyone this summer. We also take a look at the Open Mic UK contest, which has seen some notible winners in previous years. Rock Regeneration have an indepth look at the new Jack Grace EP and The Sub:Section picks the brains of the man behind the multi-genre party ‘Mash-Up’, Alex Harley. Plus all the usual gig listings, previews and more...

but it all started years before that .
Having successfully crowd funded twice, they have been able to undergo this sympathetic restoration of a Victorian building in the Triangle area of Bournemouth as well as installing a 20 barrel brewhouse capable of producing 15,000 pints a week. Back in the JULY of 2013, Jennifer Tingay, who was brewing for Lyme Regis brewery at the time, decided it was time for the good folk of England to be treated to beer of her own design and started brewing Southbourne ales. Since then the brand has grown to eight ales ranging from a lovely summery blonde ale, to a seriously scrumptious oatmeal stout and everything in-between. In 2015 Jennifer realised there was a bigger market for her ales and decided to expand into her very own brewery. After a bit of a search Jennifer decided an old car show room on Poole Hill would be the perfect place to upscale, moving from a rented 4-barrel plant to a substantial 20-barrel plant.
Since opening the brewery has produced several beers from the Southbourne Ales range which can be enjoyed in the traditional brewery bar. The taproom isn’t just for real ale drinkers and prides itself on providing a large selection of international and locally produced drinks such as a selection of wines from Dorset vineyards including a sparkling wine from English Oak, red and rose from Furleigh Estate, fruit wines from Lyme Bay, and of course the very popular local gins including Conker, Lilliput and Pothecary. Poole Hill Brewery also hosts events which include a pub quiz on the final Wednesday of every month, open mic every Sunday, and live music every Friday. The basement visitor’s centre is available for hire for meetings, birthday parties and networking events and also houses a 16-seat cinema which makes for a great evening out watching a film whilst having a pint or two. Open Monday to Thursdays from 6pm to catch the double feature.
After 20 years of abandonment the empty building took a lot of work to convert into a brewery. Jennifer turned to beer lovers and friends for help with the project and managed to crowdfund enough money to make the dream There is something for everyone at Poole Hill Brewery so become more of a reality. After a year of building work the taproom opened for Christmas 2018 and with a few more next time you find yourself strolling around town pop up to months of effort, on the 1st of May 2018, Jennifer brewed the Bournemouth Triangle and have a refreshing beverage, perhaps enjoy some great music, watch a film, have a chat her first beer at Poole Hill Brewery. with the delightful staff or be enlightened by the most excellent Bill on a brewery tour and tutored tasting.

THE SUB:SECTION
drum&bass | jungle | by Harry D-Tox
This month for the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section, we talk to Alex Harley aka Gnarlston, DJ, Promoter, and all round nice guy of Bournemouth’s music scene. We talk to him about his love for multi-genre music and his new twist on his established Mash Up events.
The DJs are happy to do it because they have the love for it and are fully encouraged to do whatever they want behind the decks, the club are happy because they’re making bar sales, and I’m happy because I can get involved rather than sit at the door taking people’s money! Everybody wins!
Let’s start at the beginning, tell us, when did you first get into music and have you always had a diverse taste? As a teenager, in the early 00’s, I was massively into anything rock related, from the punky stuff like Blink 182, to the Overly Heavy stuff like Slipknot. I was really into it and I loved finding out the back stories to the bands and finding their side projects. Then I saw Kevin & Perry Go Large and that all changed into love for all different kinds of music. Trance at first, then mainly Drum & Bass, and expanding into Dubstep as time went on.
With your wide taste in music, have you ever had a go at producing music yourself, and, if so, would you be able to tie it down to one genre? I’ve been known to have a tinker with production, mainly editing tunes and messing around, though I’d rather spend more time DJing or promoting. I’m not big on sitting in front of a computer for hours and days on end, as I seem to struggle for free time with my day job as it is! And like you say, I would have the issue of just not knowing what to produce genre wise, I think doing Multi-Genre EPs would be a cool idea, having 3 or 4 tracks each of a different genre, but then you have the problem of being Jack of all trades and a master of none.
Mash Up, hence the name, has always been a multigenre event, but you have delved deeper into this at your next night, on 6th July, with all DJs doing 90 minute mixed-genre sets, what prompted this and what can we expect? I’m always asking around the Mash Up regulars what they like and don’t like about the nights, and people are quite into the tempo changes more than I thought. So I’d expect to see longer build ups and intros, some epic breakdowns and more of a flow to the sets than you’d perhaps normally get. The main reason for the 90 minute set times is I’d like to see more time taken over mixes rather than banger into banger with no real break down. The DJs playing the night are so excited for this one, I know they’ve all been experimenting a lot! I know you work hard behind the scenes, helping out various other promoters on events such as Vibez and the more recent Gaia Pope Charity event, but when did you first launch Mash Up and is there anyone else who organises it with you? Mash Up first came about in 2014, all the local events had become either straight drum and bass nights or deep house nights, and I just grew frustrated with the lack of dubstep, as 2-3 years prior it was pretty much everywhere. At the same time I was really getting into the Jackin’ house sound that was starting to erupt around the UK, but I wasn’t really seeing anywhere you could get those sounds mixed with drum and bass at the time, so I started Mash Up as a night to just experience all those sounds in one place. Pretty soon my mate Zack a.k.a CMPLX decided he wanted to do a Garage and Drum and Bass crossover night called Roadblock so we ended up running the nights together. Roadblock became just a straight Drum and Bass night pretty quickly, and we used Mash Up for the more experimental side of things. Zack got the traveling bug though so it’s just me running Mash Up as a one man passion project at the moment! I notice that Mash Up events are normally free entry, how does this work for you and has this always been the case? In the early days of Mash Up and Roadblock Zack and I felt that you couldn’t really throw a decent music event without a headliner but it ended up getting to the point where we were spending so much money on headliners we weren’t actually leaving any room for error or a profit, which was cool at the time but it takes its toll after a while. I realised if I wanted to do it for the joy of it, I had to take money out of the equation.
Have you got any DJ bookings or events over the summer that you would like to tell us about, and where is best for readers to keep up to date with yourself and the Mash Up events? We’ve got 6th July Multi-Genre special coming up very soon, then on the 4th September I plan on doing a part 2 to the Multi-Genre special with some of the other resident DJs. Then looking a bit further on we’ll be back on Boxing Day with a free entry party just because it Christmas! Those 3 events will be the last of the regular nights as I’m going to be changing Mash Up into more of a streaming/YouTube based project! Without giving too much away think Boiler Room with a Mash Up twist. I’ll be getting headline acts involved with that and really delving into what inspires them and makes them tick! Mash Up events as of 2019 will be taking place still, but once or twice a year, probably a summer and winter special when the big ticket events are having their breaks, I’m keen to stick with the dark, intimate bunker vibe for those!
