This is without doubt the perfect setting for these two giants of Rock n’ Roll. A bar which holds solid it’s reputation on being a true hub to the Rock community. On the 7th October you’ll be able to catch Warwick and Johnson do a reverse Dylan and ditch their electric instruments for acoustics.

Ricky Warwick and Damon Johnson are in the Band Black Star Riders which rose from Thin Lizzy and were recently on Tour Opening for Judas Priest. They’ll be taking their acoustic show on the road once again in September & October of 2018 The tour, appropriately entitled “Sonic Acoustic Attack” will see the duo bring their full on, two hour plus, acoustic show to intimate venues all over the UK and Europe. One of these venues is Bournemouths very own Zephyr bar.

Their rollicking, diverse setlist contains all manner of material, from the past two decades of bands they have individually played in - spanning material from both artists, including songs from Alice Cooper, The Almighty, Black Star Riders, Brother Cane & Thin Lizzy catalogues, plus anecdotal stories and much more. Ricky adds “Warwick/ Johnson is a great opportunity for myself and Damon to go out and play the songs we love, raw and stripped down with maximum intent creating a great atmosphere at every show” This is truly a show not to be missed!

Catch Warwick & Johnson at Zephyr Bar, Bournemouth on 7th October 2018

Welcome, welcome, welcome and after a short time out for the festival season, Box Fulla Records are back for our beloved Dorset Music’s Sub:Section. This month we talk to DJ, producer and all round badman about him getting air play on 1Xtra, his musical roots as well as his future movements, the artist formally and still known as… Majix !! (A round of applause, gun hands, blaps & boes). Greetings sir and big up for letting us delve in to your affairs as it were ;) haha. Always best to start at the beginning in these situations so, question uno…

turntables when I was about 12. Some numark direct drives (not the sh!tty battle pack ones) and a bunch of dodgy trance records like PPK Resurrection etc. Aside from that I was always pinching my mum’s reggae cds and listening to dub and reggae from an early age. That was the beginning of my journey. When I first met you, probably over 10 years ago now, you were one third of a Swanage based Dubstep crew The Dub Smuglaz. How and when did the crew originally form and do you still do stuff together?

Straight up mad love to my brothers Alex and Sam. We had some crazy times back then, from Where did you grow up and how did you first beach raves in a secret cove, playing on the front get in to music? lawn of a giant mansion estate house, putting on our own club events, we even created our own Wow that was an intro. First off massive sound system “The Code Red Sound System’. respect to the Box Fulla Fam and Dorset Music We were blessed enough to play some of the Mag, thank you for this opportunity, let’s get most insane nights to some insane crowds. A straight into it then. Yeah, so I was a bit here, huge amount of this fun was down to the man there and everywhere to begin with. My mum Andre (Vibez Events) who gave us so many and dad were part of the hippie/rave scene back opportunities to do our thing, so big ups to man in the day, travelled around a bit, Birmingham like DRE!!!!! Yeah, so we kind of came together being the first place I remember calling home. naturally. To be perfectly honest I have no idea. I’m so humbled by this. More recently I’ve been associated with midlands based Grime/Bassline Crew EMR records (big up RAME and the gang), together with EMR family grime production Badman Kronzy, we featured on an EP for grime producer Dixon Beats. We had to provide remixes for his original track “Judas” and it was released for free download on Dixon Beats YouTube Channel. Next thing I get an email from Bronzy saying “I just heard your version of the track on 1Xtra!!!”. Sure enough I checked it out, and the legend that is Sian Anderson had been Playing my jam on BBC 1XTRA. Crazy! Right to this day none of know how this happened, as none of us sent the EP to her or anyone at the BBC. She must have found my track off her own back and liked it enough to download it and play it on air. Like we just mentioned, you’re mainly known for your grime and 140 sets and production, but unknown to some you also have a whole heap of your own drum and bass production in the pipeline. Has drum and bass always been something that you have dabbled in? And if not, how long have you been making drum and bass tracks? This brings us to my new chapter then. No, drum and bass has always been a passion of mine. Before the lads got me into grime I was a DNB head. Liquid and jungle to be precise. I have a pretty big DNB wax collection and used to play DNB in and around Swanage a lot, Swanage used to have a pretty big DNB scene funnily enough. Shout out to the function days!!!! DJ SWITCH, DUSK and NIJE B. I used to go buy wax online and from Destiny records (from Dark Dean) even my current 1210’s came out of club destiny when it shut. I never really went on to mix DNB live out of Swanage for some reason though. Recently I decided to start making DNB, well overdue to be honest. Not sure why I hadn’t already. I absolutely love liquid above all over sub genres of the legendary thing that is DNB, so, this is my aim I guess. Being a lover of jungle and reggae this will influence the sound I’m trying to create. I’m 3 months into my journey now and starting to find my sound I think. One of the liquid D&B tunes that you are working on has your cousin singing vocals on it, her vocals sound high calibre and the overall vibe and tune you have created are standout. Do you have plans to release this tune? And can you tell us more about the process of making it? OHH, I don’t know how much I want to say about this track. It’s kind of something I’m trying to keep a lid on until its fully ready, but now you mention it I’ll give you a little bit of info. IT’S SICK!!! My cousin has the most amazing set of lungs on her, SHOUT OUT TONIA VICTORIA!!!!! I can’t take all the credit for creating this track as I took elements from an original soul r&b track of hers and created a new liquid track, but yes out of everything I’ve created so far this seems to be the standout. I’m currently working with DJ Breakneck to master the track so that we can start getting it out to labels and see what comes from it. Making this track was too much fun.

Right now, I’m working with two producers KDSIX aka CQ (729 crew) and MULENGA SOUND to perfect my tech skills and get to where I want to be. I owe a lot to these guys right now especially one half of Mulenga aka DJ SWITCH (don’t know if I’m allowed to say that) I’m learning a lot from this guy mad love (he happens to be music lecturer at a university). So, props for this track go to them two guys also!!! That’s as much as I’m going into about this track for now. Sorry bro. As the festival season draws to an end and we sadly witnessed the last ever On the Bus Festival, did you reach many others this year, and what memorable moments happened all in all? On The Bus…….. I’m gutted to lose this as part of my yearly routine. I’ve never missed a single summer festival, been lucky enough to DJ at every one and had some of the most memorable moments and met so many people there. MAD LOVE TO BURT AND ALL THE CREW. One memorable moment of festivals this year was pretty funny… I’m at Wilkswood Reggae Festival, I get the phone call from a friend it’s time to drive to on the bus festival for his set. So, I jump in my car and decide it’s a cool idea to pick him up from his tent, save him walking. Just happens to be at the very bottom of the steepest hill he could find. It starts raining at this point. Get to his tent, flash the lights, he jumps in the car. Spend the next don’t know how long trying to get the car up the slip ‘n slide the hill had now become. Almost giving up. Eventually we did it and made it to DJ D-TOX’s LAST SET AT OTB!! The biggest highlight was by far that I played for the first time a DJ set of pretty much all my own Drum and Bass productions at On the Bus Festival. To top it off the next night played the same set at Wilkswood Reggae Festival right before Lee Scratch Perry (I was on the next stage along but that’s a minor detail.) Bucket list stuff ;) so much love goes out to the Dubwood Productions team that put on Wilkswood Reggae Festival. Next year it is going to be off the grid BE THERE!!!! Haha I was not expecting you to tell that story! That was proper jokes. So finally let the people know what bookings and projects you have got coming up and where is best to follow and find out more about you? That would be telling. Watch this space…. You can find me on soundcloud.com/its-a-maj-ting and facebook.com/SmuglaMajix

Smack bang in the middle of Bournemouth town centre stands St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Built in 1887 it’s not the kind of place you’d expect to spot world famous DJs and celebrities, but Halo isn’t any club! We chat with the man behind the magic, Ty Temel. Hi Ty, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. When Halo opened, it took over from V, a student nightclub that had it’s licenced revoked. How difficult was it convincing the authorities to let this space continue to be used for entertainment and how has your relationship with the council blossomed since? It wasn’t an easy task by any stretch, however with a great team and a wealth of operating experience in the industry, along with a robust plan we managed to get the green light to open our doors. We are thankful to the council for giving us a chance and after winning ‘Best Club’ three years in a row we hope they now feel they made he right choice. Since then our relationship with the local authorities has grown from strength to strength. We now host

a number of outdoor large scale events locally along with the full support of the council. Halo hasn’t managed to lose it’s appeal over the years and has queues up the road on a regular basis. What do you see as key to the venues success? I wouldn’t say any one factor is the key as such, but a variety of factors together. Firstly we are set inside of a former church so as far as venue’s goes its pretty unique. Secondly I would say diversity, we ensure our programming and entertainment is always different so there’s a little bit for everyone, we are constantly striving to bring the next big thing, stay ahead of the curve. Innovating instead of imitating if you will. The production used in house rivals some of the largest clubs in the country, what’s your favourite tech toy to play with and how does lighting and sound impact a show? My personal favourite has to be the pressurised CO2 Cannons, purely

due to the fact that the impact these have on the atmosphere is immense and most importantly it’s the only one I know how to use. However we pride ourselves in production. Whatever show we do, little or large this is paramount to us. You could have the best space and biggest DJ but with no production there is zero atmosphere it completely makes the experience. Parties at Halo often feature some kind of celebrity guest and meet and greet. Who has been your favourite guest and have you any juicy stories to tell? That’s a tough one as we have had so many with Celebrity appearances most Mondays and Guest DJ’s most Fridays. Danny Dyer and Verne Troyer (Mini Me) were great fun and I really enjoyed Tinie Tempah and Giggs’ performances to name a few. Oh we have some amazing stories but I’m afraid what happens in Halo stays in Halo

in s n e p p a h t a ‘wh ys in Halo’ Halo sta

Recently we’ve seen Halo branch out from the venue and throw some excellent outdoor parties such as Sandfest and Paradise Beach. What’s

been the reception to these and what else can we expect from Halo in the future? SandFest has been a huge success, it’s actually pretty overwhelming the amount of support we’ve had with it only being year 2. Same for Paradise Beach which we launched this year. This area has so much potential and we plan to keep bringing new and unique concepts here. We are working on some pretty exciting projects at the moment but all will be revealed soon! Freshers are rolling back into town this September and Halo is clearly a student favourite, why should the new recruits to Bournemouth come and check out Halo this freshers season? We have been working all year to program the best last quarter for the South so I’m confident there will be something for everyone. Expect state of the art light and sound along with the best DJ’s in the world all jam packed inside of a former church. What more could you ask for?
