THE TOP 10 ALBUM “ONCE MORE ‘ROUND THE SUN” OUT NOW A KILIMANJARO PRESENTATION BY ARRANGEMENT WITH K2 AGENCY
FEATURE It’s a story we’re all familiar with: school friends form a band through a combined desire to turn passion for music into sounds of their own. Blitz Kids are a British rock band purposefully navigating their way up the ranks, and with recent album The Good Youth it’s plain to see (or hear!) that they’ve found their sound. The new album sees the Crewe-founded four-piece wholly capitalise on the potential they’ve shown since emerging into the public eye. Recorded in the USA with John Feldmann [of Goldfinger fame] producer for the likes of Panic at the Disco, All Time Low and Kelis. It’s full of gritty lyrics and honest sincerity, yet melodically bursting with Californian rays. But things haven’t come together overnight; the roots of this band go way back, to when 11 year old Joe would walk to school beside the year-above Jono. Nick Montgomery was also known to the pair from afternoons playing in sandpits and when teenage years descended and the itch to create music was finally scratched, the three came together to contest battle-of-the-bands events: Joe on drums at the time, Nick on bass and Jono on guitar. Influences – from emo to punk, post-hardcore to nu-metal – were assimilated and processed into the future foundations of Blitz Kids. Friendships remained but the songs didn’t stay the same; Joe moved out from behind the drum kit to centre-stage, and Blitz Kids was born. EP releases and self-booked tours took the band from boisterous backstreet bar rooms to toilet-circuit triumphs. Their live set became their lifeblood and, today, it’s still performing that fills this band with palpable enthusiasm. Now joined by drummer Matt Freer, Joe, Jono and Nick have fused a previously unexplored lyrical introspection with some of the band’s most instant-gratification compositions yet. This accessibility is evident from lead single ‘On My Own’, a track that complements its dark heart with vibrantly upbeat motifs and a proper holler-yourself-sore chorus. This band’s ambition is massive: their sights are set on headlining Reading and Leeds one day [where kids Joe and Jono would camp at Leeds for their summer-break rock fix] and it’s not an entirely fantastical dream either. With songs this radio-friendly but blessed with uncommon depth, Blitz Kids could see the new album propel them towards the vanguard of contemporary rock crews. ‘Pop’ to this band is not a dirty word; to be popular would mean achieving their dreams, the moment they’ve been building towards since they were teenagers. We nabbed a few minutes with lead vocalist Joe James to find out exactly how it’s all working out… Southampton is the 2nd date on your UK tour. We last saw you here at Takedown festival, what was that like? It was great! We loved Takedown festival, it was our second time playing and it was a pleasure. The staff and organisers smash it every year and the crowd are always up for it! Are you excited to be coming back to Southampton? I was born in Bournemouth so Southampton will always have a special place in my heart. I used to go to games at St. Mary’s with my Grandad. We always get a great reception every time we visit so we’re excited to come back. After the UK, you’re off into Europe with Deaf Havana, that must feel like a pretty big step… We’ve been out to mainland Europe a few times now and it feels like a second home. The fans are so lovely and the promoters really look after you. Havana are close friends of ours and like us they enjoy a scoop or two! So if we come back alive I’ll count that tour a roaring success. But you recently jetted off around Europe on your own headline tour, how do you think the two will compare? It’s impossible to tell. Our headline tour was a great success and I’m sure everyone who came out to see us on that will come again in October! Then it’s our job to make sure they have an equally great time and hopefully we’ll make a few new fans while we’re at it!
You write about a lot of personal issues like anxiety and depression. Do you think it’s important to connect with fans over issues like this? I always write from experience and sometimes my lyrics become my own source of therapy. I think it’s important for me to share what I’ve been through so that anyone else who has experienced similar things can relate to that. Hopefully it can help them and in that way I’m making a positive impact with that we’re doing. Are you writing at the moment? Yes. We’re taking our time with the next record which is something we’ve never done before and it feels good. That’s not to say that it’s going to be a millennia before it comes out, we’ve been writing for a while. We wanted to give ourselves a head start. What can we expect from your live shows? They are full of energy. We engage a lot with our audience and we give it everything we can every night. Who’s got the worst habits on the tour bus and what are they? I sleep a lot, too much really. Jono cracks his knuckles which goes right through me and Nic and Ice Man are a devilishly naughty duo on a night out. When the rhythm section start the party, it never stops. Which one of you would make the best girl? Jono would be a right thirsty little minx if he was a girl and I don’t think he’d mind me saying that. Nic would be the prettiest, those cheekbones.
What’s the best festival you’ve played this year? It’s got to be Slam Dunk festival. We’ve never had a bad show there. There is such a great vibe about the whole festival. It’s all about discovering new bands, revelling in the nostalgia of older ones and having a great time with your friends.
And finally…..if there was a blitz what one thing would you rescue from you house and why? My iPhone although it would be glued in my hand anyway… so my cat. He’s a good chap. Words Zan Lawther
Do you prefer playing festival shows or sweaty venues? Every show is different. It’s impossible to choose. I feed off the energy of the crowd so sometimes it all depends on them.

We’re hearing it more and more these days. Exciting new musician releases home-recorded, self-funded videos on YouTube, builds up a fanbase and eventually gets ‘discovered’. In summer 2012 Lewis Watson self-released his debut EP It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It, BTW and it topped the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on the first day of release, outselling the likes of Adele, Madonna and Ed Sheeran in the process. It landed the then nineteen-year-old singersongwriter a deal with Warner Bros. Records and Lewis’ profile has continued to grow ever since. All five (yes, FIVE) of his EPs to date have hit the Top 10 at iTunes and the world has eagerly awaited the release of his first full length album. This June saw we finally got our hands on ‘The Morning’, an album which demonstrates Lewis’ growing powers as a songwriter. It combines fully-realised reworkings of select songs that emerged as sketches on his early EPs (notably ‘Into The Wild’ and ‘Windows’) together with the best of the sixty (yes, SIXTY) unreleased songs that he wrote last year. The newer material – including the first single and instant grat track ‘Stay’, Holding On’, ‘Outgrow’ and ‘Castle Street’ – takes Lewis’ stripped-back guitar-and-voice roots and constructs a richer, more textured sound around him. Always one to gives his fans a little extra, in addition to the album, a special D2C book edition will be released with a bonus 52-page diary which tells the story of the making of the album. “I wanted people to be able to see the journey of me as an artist and the evolution of the songs. It’s unorthodox, but I feel very lucky that I’ve had that opportunity” says Lewis. And it seems that simple honesty is at the heart of all that he does. We caught up with him recently to delve a little deeper into the world of Watson… You recently released your long awaited first full length album ‘the Morning’ – how has that been? A bit overwhelming, really. A little relieving but mostly overwhelming. I’m a massive worrier so I worried about it a lot but, at the same time, all I could do was make sure that I had an album that I was happy with and hope that the rest fell into place. You’ve released loads of EPs in the last few years, do you think there’s any great difference to releasing an album as compared to an EP? Are albums more important in a way? Definitely, we made sure that the EPs were a bit more lo-fi; demos, monitor mixes, etc. and I think that had a charm to it. An album has to be finished and polished for people to feel like it’s the final release and that we weren’t halfass-ing it which brought a lot of pressure, too. No excuses! You write a lot of songs (over 60 last year!), was it hard to choose which ones you wanted to put on the album? Yeah, it was a bit of a problem but it’s a great problem to have. I would’ve hated to get to the album and not have enough songs; that would’ve been the worst. And are you already thinking about album number two? I always have been. A wise man called Joe once told me ‘you have your whole life to write album one but only a year to write album two’ and because of that, I’ve always had album two in the back of my head. I think it’s almost half written. How does it feel being compared to Ed Sheeran all the time? I think it’s a lazy comparison, our music is pretty different… however, it’s a compliment, the guy is a true gent and has the best work ethic that I’ve ever seen, so I’ll take the compliment. You’ve selected Amber Run and Andreas Moe to accompany you on this tour, tell us about those choices… I always have to be into the support acts on tour. I will enjoy the

night regardless because I love being on stage with the band but I’m going to share the road/stage with these people for a month. I need to enjoy their music! I always pick acts that I love and want other people to love. You’re not only touring the UK this time, but Europe and the States. Is there anywhere you’re particularly excited to see? Canada. I’ve never been and I’ve imagined it being the nicest place for so long. I like the cold and every Canadian that I’ve met has been an outstanding person. I can’t wait. (and Southampton of course!) You spend a lot of time engaging with fans via your social media and it’s played a huge part in your success, do you think it’s a good thing that fans have such easy access to musicians these days? Yeah, it’s helped me a lot. I think that a bit of mystery is a good thing, people will grow tired of a person if they know every in-and-out of their life. However, I really like an insight into the artists/bands that I love so I think it’s great in small doses. What’s your favourite thing about touring? Being able to travel from place to place and having the opportunity to play music to a crowd of people. There was a long time when I would play a gig every night in Oxford to 3 or 4 people (if I was lucky) so it blows my mind that we can go to places we’ve never been before and potentially have hundreds of people want to come and listen to us play. If you had the chance to collaborate with anyone, who would it be? An Australian singer/songwriter called Matt Corby. He’s brilliant and I’d love to pick his brains in the studio. Words Zan Lawther

Anathema began their journey as pioneers of melodic heavy music, influencing a myriad of bands to follow them, before firmly establishing themselves outside of the usual genres as they fearlessly explored new territory and ways to express feelings through sound. Formed in Liverpool in the early 90’s, the band’s musical vision has continually evolved over the ensuing years while always remaining true to their original goal of creating forward thinking, meaningful, passionate and honest music. With each release they move beyond the boundaries of limited scenes and pigeon holes, creating a complex and emotive atmospheric sound. The line-up is really a collective of two families, who were quite simply born to play music. Anathema consists of brothers Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh, alongside childhood friends John Douglas and the incredible vocals of his sister Lee. The line-up is completed by Les Smith, who brings much in the way of production expertise to the band. It’s plain to see there’s a deep bond in the group that transcends usual band politics, ego and avarice. They have a shared vision and are about to take the band to a whole new level. Anathema ‘s most recent offering ‘Distant Satellites’ is a multi coloured, multi layered work of unbridled emotion, passion and intensity which frankly, we can’t wait to hear live. So we caught up with guitarist Danny to find out a little more… You recently released your 10th album ‘Distant Satellites’ – how has that been received? It’s been received well. I’m less invested in the reaction to this album than previously -- but what I am hearing is that it’s a fine follow up album and people like the fact that we have pushed the boundaries -- I believe at this stage nobody minds us doing that at all anymore. 10 albums is a lot, how has your sound changed between the first and the most recent? That’s something you’d have to answer for yourself – but I would say the melodic sensibility has remained but the way that music is executed has changed. Have your fans followed you through the evolution of the band? Some have of course, and some haven’t of course. That is their right. Regardless the music is made for ourselves primarily -- and the audience are welcome to listen if they wish. You worked with an orchestra on this album, what was that like as both a writing and recording experience? Wonderful honestly -- the string orchestra has become an integral part of our sound - just as the guitars, piano, and even the laptop. They’re all the part of the tapestry. You’re currently touring right across the UK and Europe, is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to playing? Not as such though it is always a great pleasure to visit Germany! I so love that country. You’ve been nominated for a massive THREE awards at the Progressive Music Awards, how does that feel? When I go to sleep at night I have the same stuff in my head as I would have if we were never nominated. But I admit it feels good the spirit is good in the band and that the business is in reasonable shape. It’s nice to be taken notice of, but it’s the music that should be gaining attention and no other reason than that. What do you think of the world of prog at the moment, is it in a peak or a trough? I like post rock and all kinds of rock, pop, and classics, but prog has never really been my thing. Pink Floyd, Radiohead or mid period Beatles were all forward thinking bands, but I love that songwriting style, and it has nothing to do with what I hear from whatever prog is supposed to be now. What’s it like being with your brothers all the time? Great, to be honest I don’t know what it’s like not to be in a band with them. And finally, what can we expect from your live show? Passion and integrity.

Music in the City returns for IT’s 6th year in southampton!
Brian Hooper of the Bargate Balladeers
What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? I think the Westgate Hall is a wonderful venue for singers, I’ve sung there a few times now, lovely venue, I sang there for the first time last year and it’s great to be back. So you’ve played MITC before? tell about your experiences over the years. i’ve performed every year now! last year I played at the Sea City Museum, the year before I performed at the art gallery and I’ve played twice in the vaults! The first time I sang was in St. Michael’s church, where I believe I sang the first song in the first festival. I sing a lot of songs which are all themed about Southampton so singing those songs in interesting places is great fun and most inspiring.
Tracy of Batala
What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? The Atmosphere - the city comes alive with talent, creativity and both the audience and performers love it. If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? There literally is something for everyone, and not only from an audience point of view but also from a ‘citizen’ point of view. It showcases what the city has to offer, clubs to join, groups to become involved with, new things to learn and enjoy - it’s all out there. It’s a fun, uplifting day scattered sprinkled through the city centre. What are you looking forward to most about your set? We love the reaction of the audience, we are so close to them and thats what we love about this event, there are no barriers, you can ‘feel’ the reaction which just gets better and better each year as the popularity of the event grows. We usually play a couple of sets in different locations and it is such a compliment to us that people enjoy our performance enough to follow us to our next location. Have you played MITC before? tell about your experiences over the years. We’ve been playing at music in the city for a few years now, this will be our 4th year and we have started to notice a few familiar faces in the crowd. Southampton love our style, and it enhances our performance when we see feet tapping and the cries for ‘more’. We’ve played there in all weather come rain or shine but there is always a warm welcome from people even as we carry our drums down the street.
Sarah Saville
What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? The broad mix of music on offer, there is absolutely loads of great bands to see and hear. I think it’s a thrill to find something new, you discover new talent and new bands and then you find them online afterwards so you can follow their movements and releases. If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? Music in the City is very broad but there’s something for everyone. There are different locations you might not have been experienced before like the wine vaults and all the interesting places along the old city walls, everyone’s really friendly and it’s a fun day out! What are you looking forward to most about your set? Well I’m playing the SS Shieldhall so it will be floating on water, which will be a new experience for me!
Christine Hooper of The Skiffuleles
What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? It’s quite exciting just being a part of such a big local event. We did sing in the same venue last year which is king johns palace but we’re all looking forward to it because it’s such a great venue. Last year we were blessed with brilliant weather too plus the staging and set up that was provided was great for our set, everyone enjoyed it and we’re happy to be back. So you’ve played MITC before? tell about your experiences over the years. This is our second time playing yes, I think we just love entertaining people, we like having fun and hope we share that with the audience, we’re actually an off shoot of the Southampton Ukulele Jam and this event gives us an opportunity to rework some classic songs with our own unique twist. We might not be as many as the full Ukulele Jam but we make plenty of noise with just the four of us! If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? I’d say you must go, it’s fun and it’s not just a show case of local music and talent it also shows off the amazing old parts of the city, locations like King Johns Palace and Holyrood Church. You’re getting music and you’re also getting to see the cities heritage and it’s all 100% free.

What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? I think i’m playing in the Castle Vault this year and i haven’t played there before, so that, and checking out some new music. What are you looking forward to most about your set? One of the songs in my set has just been signed by a publisher, we play it last…so probably that and the other tunes from my new album. In general though I just love playing and entertaining a crowd. If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? Check out the list of bands playing, spend the day in Southampton and take yourself around some of the most unique venues, discovering and enjoying music as you go. Have you played MITC before and what your previous experiences been like? I played MITC in 2013 and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I’d just played 24 shows around the UK and this was our last one. We set up inside an underground vault. It was pretty unique. The place was packed and it created an atmosphere that you just wouldn’t get anywhere else, bar The Cavern in Liverpool.

previews Sketchy dudes, beautiful tunes
After working together at a local music store, Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso bonded over a love of hardcore, punk and screamo. First formed as a pop punk band they re-cast themselves as an acoustic duo, armed with nought but guitars and harmonies. Beautiful in its simplicity, their new acoustic sound touched a chord with fans and things seem to be swinging from strength to strength. FOR FANS OF: NECK DEEP / FALL OUT BOY / STATE CHAMPS

Stunning singer songwriter gets better and Better After gathering broad critical and public acclaim for his first two albums “Feather & Stone” and “Skybound” Tom Baxter returns to the touring circuit with his sumptious vocals and pleasing melodies. Baxter showcases his masterful guitar playing and raw, confessionary depth of lyrics and voice. Truly captivating you really can hear a pin drop from the moment he walks out on stage. FOR FANS OF: TURIN BRAKES / BETH ORTON / DUKE SPECIAL
Female fronted hard rocking heroes
They may be fronted by a girl but there’s no shortage of balls in this band. Hard hitting, dirty rock washes over you in huge crashing waves as Danni Monroe’s searing vocals sail overhead. The South Wales five piece have been smashing their way through festival shows and world tours supporting the likes of Korn, The Rasmus and Reckless Love since they leapt into the scene in 2010. Founded in 2010 as a side project/bereavement vehicle for Paradise Lost mastermind Gregor Mackintosh after the death of his father, punishing extreme metal supergroup Vallenfyre (old English for ‘strong fire’) will blast your face off with their heartfelt, abrasive and undenyably powerful metalz. Combining elements of all the darkest forms of metal they’re masters of their field and experts at their craft.

Indie rock n roll with a glam twist
The uber-catchiness of The Struts refreshing blend of bluesy rock and glammed up indie sounds makes us think that these lads are destined for much bigger stages in not too long. A really strong feeling of old meets new spills through with their vintage Rolling Stones-esque grooves coming through with a splash of British indie-pop that ensures you’ll be hearing their tracks everywhere. FOR FANS OF: ARCTIC MONKEYS / THE 1975 / ROYAL BLOOD
A Welsh cocktail of punk, reggae, rock and metal From sleepy Wales to main stage festival heavyweights (Download this year, anyone?), Skindred are ready to go hard or go home with 5th album “Kill the Power”, released in January. There ain’t no mosh pit sweatier than a Skindred mosh pit and as one of the UK’s best live acts, we have no doubt this will be INSANE. After all, we remember what happened the last time they played Talking Heads....

Brutal and cerebral metal
A right force of nature and early leaders of the djent style, Tesseract rely heavily on tight, palm-muted riffs combining all the facets of math metal with ambient and tech metal to produce atmospheric, metallic songs that stir strong emotions and evoke powerful mental images. They fully embrace their experimental, prog sensibility without excessive indulgence or pretentiousness.

THE BLACKOUT Playing a hot-wired mix of metal, punk and indie rock with melodies that only increase their impact, these five boys from South Wales know how to start a party. NOV 12 | THE 1865 80’s pop classics
Though you might not remember the name, most people will remember the song ‘A Little Respect’ which has had continual success since its release in 1988 and has become their signature song. Think glam rock and a heavy set of synthesisers and you have the glittering pop-sensations, Andy Bell and Vince Clark, whose crisp vocals together are like a soundtrack of 80’s club music. How would you describe your sound? It’s got a little bit of everything we love to listen to, there are heavy riffs, some harsh vocals but always a song behind it all. We love our big choruses and when people come up to us saying “It’s like I’ve been hit in the face…. I loved it, give me more!”
This homegrown 5 piece rock group are driven by the need to give every audience a great time and some huge tunes to bounce to. Praised for their energetic live shows and down to earth demeanour, the band has been gaining momentum rapidly from their inception in late 2012. Since their first show at The Joiners in Southampton, Old Crows have played most of Hampshire’s respected small venues including The Railway in Winchester, The Edge of the Wedge and The Cellars in Portsmouth, The Hobbit Pub and Avondale House in Southampton . Old Crows have supported touring bands such as Fort Hope, Cytota and Run From Robots, and kept things local with support to Math Rock heroes Signals and metal masters Dendera, showing flexibility and diversity in their music that can cross genres, and give any audience a great time. You can expect to hear explosive riffs, powerful drums and gritty vocals all of which gives Old Crows a familiar sound with a very different twist... 2014 promises to be an even bigger year for the band, with more cities to conquer, more bands to perform with.... more of everything, so we caught up with the guys ahead of their show at Joiners this month to find out a little bit more… How did you get together as Old Crows? It was a combination of a University project and a general desire from all of us to play something different from the day to day pop music we were creating as part of our Uni course. Chris, Jae and Simon already had some great songs, Mike and Harry had the drive and plan to get the band together, and it all spiralled out of control from there. How did you choose your name? We had a lot of discussion about naming the band, and went through dozens, checking they weren’t already in use or whether they sounded any good when introducing the band and what it stands for. Ultimately, if you can’t introduce yourself with pride, you’re not going to get anyone’s attention. We went for “Old Crows” due to our mutual love of Alexisonfire and their album “Old Crows/Young Cardinals”. And because it’s a bit left-field and easily recognisable. Who does what in the band? Mike wears the trousers but the rest of us pick up whatever he can’t manage on his own, so Chris takes a bigger role in a lot of the musicality and production so we can walk into a practice room and flesh it out between us all. Lots of jobs get started with one person and gradually everyone gets pulled into making it happen. There’s no such thing as too many voices when everyone has a valid opinion, and we are all 100% honest with each other…. Sometimes 110%
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC |SEPTEMBER 2014
Which bands are you loving at the moment? Jared; Death and the Penguin, Signals, Faux, Bad Sign Harry; Avenged Sevenfold and Gallows Chris; Lower Than Atlantis, Norma Jean and Night Verses Simon; Press to Meco, Bad Sign, Signals and the MIGHTY DENDERA Mike; Breaking Benjamin, Signals, Skindred, the incredible Jamie Lenman and City and Colour What’s your favourite festival? Well we love the big ones like Glasto, Warped Tour and Reading obviously (as I write this, Chris is actually on his way to Reading) but we love little events like Secret Garden Party, Bestival and of course, TAKEDOWN… we really love Takedown! What’s the best live show you’ve ever played? After much discussion on this question, we have all decided the best show was our first headline slot at The Talking Heads…. When we had a great crowd and STROBES for our last song…. Strobes make everything better! What’s the best live show you’ve ever been to? For Mike, it has to be Motorhead and Alice Cooper’s double headline tour in 2006. Was the first gig he ever went to and he was left deafened by Motorhead constantly upping the volume. Either that or Alestorm at The Cellar in Southampton. Chris’ favourite show was UnderOath at Koko in London, amazing energy and great songs. Simon’s favourite was Karnivool and Skindred at Norwich waterfront, and Harry couldn’t get enough of Roger Waters when he came to Athens in 2011. Jared’s best gig was Muse in 2007 when he can be seen in the live video with white hair and a much younger face, though we doubt this was really 2007 as Jared’s beard pre-dates Stonehenge… What’s next for Old Crows? We are currently writing and recording our 2nd EP, all on our own with Chris handling production. It’s gonna be bigger, more brash and just more in every way. Really looking forward to releasing this on an unsuspecting public. More gigs are on their way to support the EP release, including our upcoming headline show at the Joiners with Fizzy Blood! We are planning on covering the south coast as much as possible and potentially heading up north for a few brand new cities to cross of the list What can we expect from your live show? Energetic performance, huge riffs and genuine people with no pretence, just wanting to give you all a good time…. Oh, and you can expect Mike…. He’s very tall and loud… can’t miss him…. And watch out for Chris…. You’ve been warned! Words Zan Lawther
