From envelope to design chair in 10 seconds Flux Furniture introduces an innovative folding furniture concept It sounds impossible: stacking 77 chairs in less than one metre. But with the Flux Chair the impossible is possible. This is a concept from Flux Furniture – a company established by industrial designers Douwe Jacobs and Tom Schouten. Boasting a unique innovative balance, the Flux Chair combines design with the benefits of foldable furniture. In its folded state, the Flux Chair is easy to carry and even easier to store. But with a few simple actions the plastic envelope folds into a truly stylish design chair. It’s the perfect product for people that love design and treasure their space. The Flux Chair will be brought onto the market from the end of November 2010 and, will among others, be available at www.fluxchairs.com. The patented Flux-concept is the new means to make extremely flat foldable furniture that stands out thanks to its unique form and endless applicability. The Flux Chair surprises with its extremely sturdy construction (tested to 160kg by TNO/ TUV) and is also ideal for use outdoors. From the outset, one of the aims during the design process was to create a chair that is as effortless as possible to recycle. This is why the links are intelligently integrated into the construction allowing the entire chair to be made from a single component and just one material type. The often time consuming disassembly process during recycling is thus bypassed. The chair is available in 8 colours. Dimensions: 77 x 85 x 1,5 (!) cm (stored) and 64 x 62 x 85 cm (chair) Weight: 4.3 kg. Accessories include the Flux Chair cushions, available in 4 colours, and the extremely handy storage system which allows you to hang and store up to 6 chairs on your wall. Douwe Jacobs on his design: “The folding chair has always been seen as an integral piece of furniture - a real status object - from everyone from the old Egyptians to Napoleon. It is a shame that these days this image has somewhat been lost, especially because the folding concept can offer so much. A folding chair not only saves space, but also enables you to take it everywhere! In addition to this, the extreme ‘compact-ness’ of the chair considerably reduces CO2 emissions when transported in bulk.’ For more information, sales and a supporting video of the chair see: www.fluxchairs.com. About Flux Furniture Designers Douwe Jacobs & Tom Schouten, having graduated in 2008 from the TU Delft, The Netherlands, won in 2009 both the New Venture entrepreneurs competition and the Philips Innovation Award. The Flux Chair is the fruition of Douwe Jacobs’ graduation project. In search of inspiration for a line of folding furniture, he became fascinated by the art of paper folding. Driven by the possibility of creating elegant shapes with curved fold lines and a single flat sheet, the miniature scale models quickly found the chair’s unique form. Together with fellow student Tom Schouten, Douwe formed the company Flux Furniture. This partnership enabled them to realise a production ready and patented product from the first folded paper designs. As of November 1st 2010 Flux Furniture will be located in Marcel Wanders’ Westerhuis, Amsterdam.
