Brief: Find a problem and solve it using a systematic approach to understanding the challenge and its need to be resolved! The challenging over the next ten weeks is to seek out, research, investigate, discuss, write about, collaborate and resolve a three-dimensional design problem. The best place to start is the simple tasks and experiences you interact with every day.

The Decision Why ?

I am an international student who comes from Taiwan. This is my first time to live in America. Before I come here, I feel so excited but panic and nervous at the same time. I don’t know anything about America, except some fast food, like Mcdonald, Burger king, etc. No one tells me where I can go grocery or rent the house when I got here. Although I got some information from orientation but I think there are some other problems that haven’t been fixed. Based on my experience, I think most of the international students have the same problem as me. The new international students always feel panic, so they will ask other international students questions about living here. If they don’t have any friend who is studying at SCAD, they won’t have any ideas about Savannah. The only thing they can look is the brochure that SCAD provided. That is why I want to make a kit that tells some basic information in order to help international students fit in America and let them feel comfortable when they got here.

Research What information international students can get from SCAD?

Students from approximately 100 countries attend SCAD to take advantage of the unique learning environment offered. Full-time advisers assist with the transition of international students into American culture and the college environment. All students are encouraged to participate in the activities planned by the Intercultural Student Association, formed to promote cross-cultural contact and communication among students and the community. While attending international orientation, SCAD provides lots of information to help students like: 1. Housing-off campus and on campus 2. Health Insurance 3.Changing immigration Status 4.Cross-cultural adjustment 5.English As a Second Language

ISA (International Student Association) It provides some activities to help international students adept college life in Sav, like: 1. Social activities: movie nights, shopping trips, etc. 2.Community events: International Festival, Taste of the world, etc. 3.Excursions to neraby attractions: trips to Atlanta and North Carolina, Disney,etc.

Beforing coming to SCAD, Internation students will get an information set that has lots documentsand brochures. Every sheets is not organized that students hard to find what they want to get immediately. Also, the information that SCAD provides is more acdemic than basic living needs.

Interview Chia-Lung Liu, the prisdent of CSA

HI, Lung, This is my project in 3-D graphic studio, and I am going to help international students to get familiar with savannah SCAD. I want to ask you some questions. Lung: Yeah, sure. Me: What is the most common questions that international students ask you when they come to Savannah? Lung: International students always ask about the ESL English test placement, like does it diffcult, when does it take palce. But if you want to ask about living problem, I’ll say the questions are housing and go grocery issues. When they get here, they don’t have any information about this area, so they don’t know where they can find the house or go grocery shopping. Me: How can you help them? Lung: I gave them the rental website for housing and they need to call them or walk around in downtown Savannah in order to find the house they like. I don’t have a lot of housing information. I think SCAD doesn’t provide enough information. Me: What other information need to be provide from SCAD? Lung: I think school can provide more about living needs except the school buildings and acdemic information. More than that, I would say the hous ing information. When international students come here, they need to find a place to live temporarily, and then they always spent one or two weeks or more in order to find a place to live. When they got the place to live, I think the other problem is buying stuff, like furniture or other necessity. Must of students want to buy second-hand furniture. Therefore, If there are more websites except craglist, it will be so helpful for interna tional students. Me: Um, true, I heard lots of students ask me this questions but I lived in the dorm when I been here. Therefore, I don’t have much information to tell them. Design Problem Proposal Culture Awareness Kit

The Problem: Most of SCAD international students do not have any experience about living in America before they come; therefore, they start to nervous about everything and hardly fit in this society. For example, they don’t know where they buy medicine if they get sick, where they can stay after they arrived States, or how to take the bus, etc. Also, International students do not have any ideas about the name of the stores, like walmart, kroger, target, or best buy etc. because these stores only open in States. Although SCAD provides the school map to students but lots of international students think it isn’t useful because knowing the location of the school buildings doesn’t resolve the problem they’ve already had. Therefore, the lack of living information makes international students worried and panic. Everything, such as transportation, housing, restaurants, and grocery shopping becomes a problem to them. In addition to culture shock, some of international students cannot speak, listen, or read English very well because English is their second language. They have hard time to read lots of information on a guide or communicate with others correctly, so the cultural gap expands between international students and Americans due to the miscommunication. As a result, SCAD international students hardly adapt everything in Savannah because of the culture difference.

Current Status: Students from approximately 100 countries attend SCAD, and SCAD offers lots of information, like insurance, academic programs, transportation, and housing for international students. Students can get these information from the school website or orientation that takes place before the new quarter begins. In orientation, school gives a information kit that has lots of papers or brochures with different kinds of topics, such us welcome to SCAD list, housing, International Students Service Office (ISSO), International student life, ESL placement testing notification, etc… However, there are lots of texts instead of images in every brochure that decreases international students’ interests to read. Not only brochures but also some activities are held by SCAD in order to let international students get into life easier; for instance, they tour students form each major to their buildings, and they held kayaking in order let students know each other. In short, international students will receive information on maintaining nonimmigrant visa status, become familiar with the academic structure of the college, meet other international and domestic students at SCAD, and learn about campus life during the orientation program. Besides orientation, ISA (Intercultural

Student Association) sometimes organizes social activities, community events, excursions to nearby attractions and other programs, like Taste of the world, ski trip to NC, International festival, and Disney trip that all help international students adapt to college life in Savannah. However, the activities don’t show up in any brochure or to be told during orientation, so international won’t know any of it if they don’t check their emails or taking ESL class.

Professional advice: I have asked several international students some questions that are what did you get form SCAD international orientation program, and what do you want to know more but school didn’t provide? Lots of students thought SCAD provides enough and complete information, like academic programs, transportation, and dorm from orientation program. However, they still feel nervous and worried about living in this city because other problems that they have haven’t been solved. The interviewers want to know more about the living in Savannah, like how to find the apartment or roommate, how can I go somewhere if I don’t have any car or bike, and where can I eat besides fast food. Those are the questions they really care about.

Solutions: The proposed design solution is a culture awareness kit that helps international students get familiar with Savannah SCAD. I would like to make a series of design based on the most problems that international students considered about. There will be a brochure with map that guide international students a way of living, like grocery shopping, restaurant, and other things that they should know. As I mentioned, the SCAD map only provides the school buildings, so there will be some stores information in my design map. Also, the graphic information or icons will be used in the map instead of having long and boring paragraph. i-touch will be included in this kit in order to support the map. Again, the kit would provide information, such as transportation, housing, restaurants, and grocery shopping, for international students may need when they come to Savannah. If they receive this kit in the SCAD international orientation before the quarter begins, they still have plenty of time to know this city. More than that, this kit can be mailed to every international student before they come, so they can get some basic knowledge before they come to States. The goal of this kit will be helping international students decrease their fear and let them have more confidence living in Savannah.

Target Demographic: The Target Demographic is international students form all over the world in the 19-30 age range who are studying at SCAD in Savannah. This may be their first time to live in America. This audience is energetic, independent, and ambitious. They are willing to try and have some unique experience from different countries. However, they may not have enough confidence or feel panic when they come to a place with different language and culture. Source: http://www.scad.edu/

Therefore, I want to use the greeting word as my inspiration of brand name.
