"Many times, it did not feel like I was going to work. I remember how much I loved my students and how much fun it was to teach kids so motivated to learn and do well in school. I remember how kind and supportive the parents were. My three years there were among the best in my life." Paul Meyer, ASEDS Middle School Teacher 1976 to 1979

Letter from the Head of School Co u n ti ng Ou r Bl e ssi ng s

Dear Friends,

But for a school like ours in a place like this, celebrating fifty years is a very momentous occasion. Phoenix is a very young city as major urban areas go, and the past fifty years represent the most dramatic period of change and growth in the city’s history. I have mentioned on several public occasions recently how struck my wife, Jan, and I were during our first year here that the Phoenix Art Museum was celebrating its 50th

anniversary that year. This year we share a 50th anniversary with the Phoenix Zoo. In great cities, cultural assets such as art museums and zoos are pillars of community life. Likewise, I believe we can celebrate All Saints’ Episcopal Day School as a pillar of the educational landscape of this vibrant city. Celebrating a golden anniversary has its special qualities. We are young enough to have people “present at the creation” here as important partakers in our celebration. We have faculty and staff members who have been valuable members of this school community for significant portions of our history. At the same time we are dynamic and inclusive, enabling us to welcome new people and energy to our community with open arms. We are mature enough to have memories that extend over decades, second generation students, and visible evidence all around us−in our physical home but more importantly in the accomplishments and contributions of our graduates to our city, state, and world. Cherished memories are an important dimension of an anniversary celebration, and dreams for a bright future are also at the heart of this joyous observance at this still-young but well-established school. But for now let us savor the present moment of grace and gratitude. Happy birthday, All Saints’ Episcopal Day School. Ad multos annos! Faithfully, Leo P. Dressel, Head of School

ASEDS BANNER 50th Anniversary Edition

This special edition of the Banner celebrates a special moment in the history of All Saints’ Episcopal Day School. Any anniversary is worthy of celebration, but milestone anniversaries are an especially celebratory occasion. I have been at schools previously that celebrated such significant milestones in a manner consistent with their cultures. I am blessed to be an alumnus of a high school in St. Louis that will celebrate its 200th anniversary in five short years. I was privileged to serve as interim head at a Quaker school in Wilmington, Delaware, that was founded in 1748. (That makes the school 265 years old for those of you who are counting.) As I mentioned to that school community at the beginning of my interim year, there was great consolation walking through the main entry of the school each day with a sign noting its year of foundation. I knew that this longstanding and rocksolid history assured that the school would prosper during that year of transition as it waited its next long-term leader. For such a school, fifty years represent a few chapters in its enduring story.

Envisioning the Future A few years ago, a rare opportunity presented itself in the form of the availability of adjacent land on the north side of our existing campus. Leaders from the Church and the Day School had the foresight to purchase the obtainable land in an effort to eventually expand our footprint, an objective that comprehensive studies revealed to be a necessary strategy for the long term sustainability and growth of All Saints’. Various community constituencies were consulted to form a master plan and a new campus design was created, taking into consideration the needs of both the Church and the Day School. As generous donors in the past bestowed our campus with the David John Watson Academic Building, Father Carl G. Carlozzi Gymnasium, and Manning Hall, it is now time for our community to step up again to make the dream of expansion become a reality by investing in our future. Phase 1 Goal The first phase of this campaign has a goal of $5.5 million. Five million dollars of this will be dedicated to property acquisition, as well as development of athletic fields and additional parking and green space. Overall this will allow us to double the size of the current Church and Day School campus. $500,000 will be designated to the Church for use in short and long-term facility improvements as well as endowment growth for our various ministries. As of mid-February, we have raised just over $2.2 million in gifts and pledges towards this $5.5 million goal.

Message from the Board of Trustees Celebr a ti n g th e P ast an d E n v i si o n i n g t h e F u t u re … Fifty years is an important milestone to celebrate. As I reflect on this celebration, I’m filled with gratitude−for the Church and the School leaders who had a vision for this school and executed on that vision; for the faculty, staff, administration, and fellow parents who have welcomed our family into the ASEDS community; and for the opportunities our students have to learn−learn to fail, learn to grow, and learn to mature−in this special community. I also find this special celebration inspiring. I’m inspired by the tireless efforts of our faculty, staff, administration, and trustees to provide a peerless education, by the commitment the Church and the Vestry have to growing together as one community, and by the unending efforts of ASPA and Tiger Dads. I’m inspired by the many volunteer hours given by those who help with strategic planning, buildings and grounds, enrollment management,

development, capital campaign, and so many other aspects that keep our school community vibrant and growing. I’m also inspired by the generosity of members of the Church, faculty, staff, administration, trustees, parents, and other supporters who have pledged over $2.2 million in capital campaign gifts. In addition to gratitude and inspiration, I have a real sense of excitement about our future–a sense that, years from now, future parents and students will look back on the time all of us were here and be grateful for what our generation did for the school community. Happy 50th Anniversary to ASEDS; let’s enjoy the celebration today, and tomorrow let’s keep marching towards making ASEDS the preeminent school in the Southwest. John Lomax, Board Chair

Message From Our Rector

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.” (Matthew 7:24-26)

are not only for looking back; they are for looking forward. We who are at All Saints’ now can be inspired by our founders to leave a legacy of our own for the generations that come after. If All Saints’ has come this far in 50 years, what can we accomplish in 50 more?

This is a very special year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of All Saints’ Episcopal Day School (and the 60th anniversary of All Saints’ Episcopal Church). Anniversaries are occasions to celebrate, to remember, and to envision. We celebrate, because our school has made a huge difference in the lives of our students, our community, our nation, and the world over these 50 years. Imagine the thousands of students who have been educated and spiritually formed at All Saints’, and the good they have done, by God’s grace, in their personal, professional and civic lives. We remember, because the current vitality of our school is the result of the hard work of those who have gone before us, who built All Saints’ and entrusted it to our care. Finally, we envision. Anniversaries

It is also important, in this anniversary year, not to neglect to give thanks to God. All that we have is God’s gracious gift, for it is God who planted a vision in our first leaders, clergy and lay. God nourished the plans and gave strength when it was needed. God is the foundation of our faith, and of all things we do in faith. When challenges come, we are able to weather them, if we are properly grounded. Thanks be to God for 50 years, and may God abundantly bless us in the years to come. Faithfully, The Reverend Poulson C. Reed, Rector

"So many fun memories of All Saints'... For one semester in the 70s, I filled in for the 5th and 6th grade Reading and English teacher. Mr. Dahl gave me permission to design my own curricula, so we read Huckleberry Finn, studied Mark Twain, and wrote about the insights gained. We pulled our grammar and spelling lessons from our writing. It was a marvelous time." Pauline Urbano King Hechler, former teacher, board member, parent (and current grandparent)
