Letter from the Head of School N o w W hat ?
P l e n t y o f Gre at T h i n g s!
Dear Friends, This year marks our fifty-first as a school. Admittedly that does not have the resonance or cachet that our fiftieth anniversary provided as a key celebratory focus of the 2012−13 school year. In fact there is no precious metal or elegant material associated with a fifty-first anniversary. But rest assured that we shall not be sluggish or silent during the 2013−14 school year.
ASEDS BANNER Annual Report 2012– 13
I mentioned in the previous issue that our Board of Trustees was soon to approve a new strategic roadmap for our school. That approval occurred in August 2013, and we now have clearly identified focus areas for the continued health and growth of our school. The document, entitled ExceptionalVision, ExceptionalValues: A Strategy for Our Future, delineates six goal areas for priority attention: Teaching and Leadership, Innovation for Excellence, Culture and Community, Development, Marketing and Communications, and Financial Planning.
2
Space considerations prevent me from commenting about every one of these areas in this message, but I do want to highlight three of them here. Teaching and Leadership is listed as the first goal area in recognition of the fact that the most important resources upon which great schools rely are its human ones, above all its teachers and other key leaders. Members of my baby boomer generation will continue to retire in significant numbers in the coming few years. Over the past few years, All Saints’ has already bade farewell to a number of stalwart veteran teachers in that generation. Our strength as a school has been grounded in the long-term and superior contributions of these people. So it is imperative that we recruit and retain the next generation of master teachers and administrators. I believe that we have already made admirable progress in that regard as we have welcomed
Mr. Dressel with the student leaders of our School.
talented and committed newcomers to our professional staff. The goal area of Culture and Community provides impetus to continue the efforts we have made in becoming a more inclusive and richly textured community in recent years. Concomitantly, we need to enhance our efforts to help our students become global citizens committed to serve a world in need. We also need to address issues nearer to home, including support of parish families who may also desire to be members of the school community. Development is a supremely important dimension in the life of every independent school, but it has critical urgency in the life of All Saints’ Episcopal Day School this year. The Board of Trustees has set as a goal the completion of the first phase of our campus improvement plan by August 2014, made possible by our acquisition of additional acreage on the north side of Stella Lane. Every member of our extended school community will be given the opportunity to help that plan become reality. I hope each of us seizes that opportunity with generosity and enthusiasm. Faithfully, Leo P. Dressel, Head of School

Message from the Board of Trustees W e D o Thi s T o g e t h e r
To counter those departures I am happy that the Board has been infused with new energy for the 2013−14 school year. The areas of involvement of our new trustees serve to illustrate key board priorities for the current school year. Over the summer, there were several additions to the Board of Trustees. In this short time, they have made a significant impact. Parents include Susan Giusto, Mark Ogden, Drew Smith, Kate Smith, and Brad Wright as well as Ann Halaby, a parent, and Ian Calkins who joined as vestry representatives. Plus, we welcomed Emily Weissinger Johnson Class of 2000 as alumni representative. Collectively, that makes eight new members. I’m delighted to report that these trustees have jumped in with enthusiasm and a wealth of ideas.
Mark, Drew, and Ann joined the Enrollment Management Committee. That group is focusing on enhancing the visibility of the School in the community and working hard to ensure that we maintain applicant flow so that we continue to attract quality students. We even persuaded Ann, who has served on the Committee in the past as a parent volunteer, to be chair. Susan joined the Development Committee and agreed to be co-chair. In this critical year of the Capital Campaign, the Committee is working to meet the $1.5 million match, while ensuring we also grow our tuition tax credit program and maintain our annual fund contributions. Emily, a civil engineer, joined the Buildings and Grounds Committee and will focus on our plan for new fields across Stella Lane and will reimagine our new campus. Ian joined the Governance Committee which plays a vital role in selecting, training, and evaluating our board. The Committee also serves as an important link in bridging the School with the Church. Brad and Kate joined the Finance Committee which assists our administration develop a budget each year, evaluates the initial tuition proposals, and helps ensure that the School operates in a fiscally prudent manner. These new board members represent the very best of All Saints’. While they come from different backgrounds and bring different experiences to the table, they are working together to help us meet our strategic plans and the Capital Campaign development goals. Of course, our board cannot do this alone. We need all of our stakeholders including you to join the efforts not only to help meet our campaign goals, but also to help us ensure that we continue to offer a superior program for families considering a private school experience. You can help us by telling other families about All Saints’ and encouraging each other to give to All Saints’ at whatever level works for your family. John Lomax, Board Chair

ASEDS BANNER Annual Report 2012– 13
The Board of Trustees had another busy year during the celebration of our 50th anniversary as members devoted themselves to board core responsibilities. Particular focus areas included the development of our new strategic document, Exceptional Vision, Exceptional Value: A Strategy for Our Future, an effort led by trustee Stacy Thomas. The Board also worked to advance the Capital Campaign and to take practical steps to facilitate campus improvement and expansion, in particular successful completion of the approval process with the City of Phoenix for the eventual abandonment of Stella Lane from Maryland Gardens to Third Avenue. I thank our trustees for their commitment and counsel during a very successful 2012−13 school year, especially retiring trustees Robert Avalos, Melissa Brutlag, Amy Clague, Phoebe Fox, Robert Isom, Eric Roudi, Christina Thanstrom, and Gary Weber. We shall miss their work and wisdom.

Psychology was never my strongest subject, but I have always found it fascinating. It is remarkable how the Godgiven human mind can understand its own mysteries. Lately, I’ve been particularly interested in how we understand happiness. We all want happiness for ourselves and those closest to us, but what does that mean, and how do we achieve it? The field of positive psychology is exploring just this. It turns out that neither wealth nor life circumstance is the most important factor in happiness. The very wealthy are no happier than the middle class. Genetics and upbringing are the largest factors: each of us has a genetic “set point” for happiness, and our family life affects it, for good or ill. Still, in the end, roughly 25% of our happiness is determined by the choices we make. We can develop habits of happiness: surrounding ourselves with happy people and healthy relationships, setting goals, learning, listening to music, going outside, exercising, and eating right. But the most important choice of all is how we define happiness. Is happiness simply pleasure or is it purpose? Both science and faith tell us that seeking pleasure, while enjoyable in the short term, does not lead to sustained happiness. Purpose
Père Jeannot, Father Reed, and Reverend Lauren Lenoski
Father Reed at the 9th Annual Blessing of the Animals
25% of our happiness is determined by the choices we make does. When we use our gifts for the sake of others, either in our work or outside of it, we are fulfilled. This is the happiness the Bible speaks of in Psalm 1: “They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither. Everything they do shall prosper.” One of the spiritual goals of All Saints’, both church and school, is to help people find the happiness that comes from recognizing and fulfilling God’s purpose for them. As I look back on 2013 at the Church, I see a year of great purpose and happiness. We celebrated the church’s sixtieth anniversary in conjunction with the day school’s fiftieth, and in so doing, gave thanks to God for the enormous impact All Saints’ has made over its history. We continued to offer a range of ways to Pray, Learn, Serve, and Connect, following the example of Jesus. Our traditional music and worship, education for all ages, and outreach to those in need in our city and in Haiti were particular emphases. New initiatives this year included the first annual North Central Family 5K in the spring to benefit our Haiti partnership and church family ministries, and a monthly Third Thursday evening for all ages with dinner, programs, and Compline (sung night prayers). My hope for each of us, and for All Saints’, in this holy season is that we will continue to be grateful for our many blessings and will find happiness by bringing comfort and joy to others. Blessings, The Reverend Poulson C. Reed, Rector

Incredible Generosity, Amazing Opportunity Recently, a donor pledged a $1.5 million gift to our Envisioning the Future capital campaign. Our donor wants this pledge to serve as an incentive for the entire extended All Saints’ community, and so the challenge is to raise gifts and pledges of $1.5 million to match the donor’s gift. This gift provides an opportunity for us to advance implementation of our vision for the All Saints’ campus of the future. All new gifts and pledges received from October 1, 2013 forward will be applied to the match. We hope to reach our goal of $1.5 million in matching gifts and pledges by the end of the school year.
ASEDS BANNER Annual Report 2012– 13
Envisioning the Future A few years ago, a rare opportunity presented itself in the form of the availability of adjacent land on the north side of our existing campus. Leaders from the Church and the Day School had the foresight to purchase the obtainable land in an effort to eventually expand our footprint, an objective that comprehensive studies revealed to be a necessary strategy for the long-term sustainability and growth of All Saints’. Various community constituencies were consulted to form a master plan and a new campus design was created, taking into consideration the needs of both the Church and the Day School. As generous donors in the past bestowed our campus with the David John Watson Academic Building, Father Carl G. Carlozzi Gymnasium, and Manning Hall, it is now time for our community to step up again to make the dream of expansion become a reality by investing in our future.
8
Phase 1 Goal The first phase of this campaign has a goal of $5.5 million. Five million dollars of this will be dedicated to property acquisition, as well as development of athletic fields and additional parking and green space. Overall this will allow us to double the size of the current Church and Day School campus. $500,000 will be designated to the Church for use in short and long-term facility improvements as well as endowment growth for our various ministries. As of October 31, we have raised just over $3.8 million (including the match) in gifts and pledges towards this $5.5 million goal.

ASPA The mission of All Saints' Parent Association (ASPA) is “to promote fellowship and unity among All Saints' Episcopal Day School families, faculty, and staff.” We pursue that mission by serving as a “support group for the school’s academic, cultural, and extracurricular activities.” ASPA helps to serve an important role in The All Saints' Way. “The commitment of all community members is essential to achieving our objectives for the students we serve.” Year after year, our community rises to the challenge by faithfully filling volunteer opportunities within ASPA to support the educational process of All Saints' from head to soul. Each parent on campus is a vital member of ASPA. With over 40 hard-working committees, ASPA volunteers share their time and talent campus-wide. While our school is supported and enriched by ASPA programs and events, I believe that the truly incalculable benefit of ASPA comes in the form of building on-campus community. We extend a heartfelt thanks to ASPA volunteers for the coming year and for the past academic year, especially the 2012−13 ASPA executive board led by Christina Thanstrom. We, on the current ASPA executive board, are honored to follow in their footsteps which were deeply grounded in stewardship and commitment to our school. The current executive board members−Shauna Gliss, Tammie Elsey, Helen Yeung, and Laura Barnes−feel blessed to be part of such a dynamic community, and we feel privileged to serve the School that means so much to our families. Go Tigers! Jaime Wright, ASPA President 2013−14
Tiger Dads
ASEDS BANNER Annual Report 2012– 13
Tiger Dads Club is a volunteer parent organization affiliated with All Saints’ Parent Association (ASPA). Our mission is to give dads opportunities to participate in and support the All Saints’ community through a variety of activities–some for children, some for families, and some just for dads. Any and all dads (and dad figures) are invited and encouraged to participate.
10
So far this year, we held the Welcome Back Barbecue, hosted the first of two Tiger Dads Family Pancake Breakfasts, and helped ASPA host a really wonderful Harvest Fair on October 24. (We must pause here to give a shout out to Jaime Wright who heroically served her promised stint in the Dunk Tank!) Here are our coming events: •
Tiger Dads will handle parking control at Special Persons Day on November 26.
•
On January 31, Tiger Dads will host the inaugural Mom’s Night Off. Moms, plan to leave children with dads at school that evening. We will take care of them while you take some time for yourselves! More details on this soon.
•
We will host the Family Campout on March 22. This is always a good time, for children, moms, and dads.
•
The second and final Family Pancake Breakfast will be held on April 9.
•
Finally, the Tiger Dads Golf Tournament Committee will hold our annual fundraising Golf Tournament on April 11 at the Biltmore. We raised over $38,000 for capital improvements last year, and with a new and improved tourney format in the works, we’ll look forward to doing even better this year. Golfers of all skill levels are welcome; you can sign up in groups of up to four players; and sponsorships are available. Start thinking now of friends, alumni, or others who might like to play.
As you can see, these activities provide a wide variety of ways for dads to get involved and support the School. Busy as we’ve been, we can always use more help, especially for the next two events. So shoot an e-mail to tigerdads@allsaints.org or any of our chairs, John Ager at jpa@sa-firm.com, Andy Halaby at ahalaby@swlaw.com, or Jochen Gliss at Jochen_gliss@fmi.com, and we’ll be sure to rope you in!
Message from the Head of Lower School Techn o lo g y I nt e g rat i o n i n Lo w e r S c h o o l
Essential skills needed in the 21st century require preparation in a wide variety of areas, demanding a program of education unlike previous generations. In addition to the core content areas of reading, writing, and arithmetic, a 21st century education must also include critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Technology is utilized in the lower school to support and strengthen instruction in these areas. The hub of digital and print media continues to be centered in our school library. Jennie Oleksak, school librarian, has enjoyed the addition of multimedia resources made available to students via technology and the Web. For example, library ebooks are available anywhere the Internet is accessible. E-books related to All Saints’ curriculum and assigned student projects are available at the fourth grade level and above. Students have the ability to access multiple resources via the school’s Destiny Catalogue as they become critical users of information. When accessing resources through the school library site, “parents have the assurance that these sites are carefully screened and appropriate to the developmental level of their child,” says Mrs. Oleksak. One tool that has proven especially valuable is Accelerated Reader Bookfind. Parents and students can easily find a book at any reading level on a variety of topics. The school library is no longer restricted to the space between four walls. Students at all grade levels and their parents have the ability to safely access library resources on any device and in any location. Technology is naturally integrated within classrooms as well. In pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, class websites are utilized to inform parents of classroom activities and curriculum. Students also utilize iPads in learning center activities to reinforce skills that have been learned. Activities available through the use of iPads are seemingly limitless and include letter recognition and practice, number concepts, and patterning. Beginning in kindergarten, students visit the technology lab weekly to offer a multi-dimensional approach of lab instruction and classroom integration. Students and parents in first grade view a weekly update and pictures posted at the class website. At the site, suggested apps
are listed as well as teacher-suggested links to Internet sites of interest. The first grade team is exploring a new app to utilize for the annual animal research project. This project is a collaborative effort that involves classroom learning, utilization of technology tools, and resources available in the library. At the conclusion of the unit, students proudly share their research findings through a multimedia presentation. Students in first grade also use technology tools such as the iPad as they write and illustrate a personal fairy tale adventure. Students in second grade continue to grow and develop in their skills and use of apps. A highlight in second grade is the “I search” project. Students learn how to explore, research, and identify relevant information. They research a topic of interest that they, themselves, have generated. The project allows children to use a variety of digital resources and to use critical thinking in evaluating web resources. They must decide which sources of information are credible and which are not. The critical judgment they display is surprisingly savvy for children of this age! The project culminates with a multimedia presentation. Teachers of second grade are using their class web pages to post documents for parents and students to access. This builds a comfort level for the future in middle and upper schools where students routinely obtain assignments from their teacher’s webpage. Teachers of students in third and fourth grades make extensive use of their class websites, offering students and their parents a single source. Students at these levels enjoy using the class website to see pictures of class activities, utilize the teacher-recommended links, and access assignment downloadable documents. Students in third grade enjoy the option of participating in a class blog where they can post comments related to a topic of study as well as provide feedback to their peers. Multimedia projects become more complex and elaborate at these levels. The iPad carts are used on a regular basis at these levels. Though adults sometimes find the use of technology in the elementary years surprising, students utilize these tech resources with ease. Most are digital natives and have become adept at having a wealth of information and resources at their fingertips. To provide the knowledge and skills needed for a rapidly changing world, technology can and should be naturally integrated into the fabric and life of the School yet in a manner that is developmentally appropriate to the learner. We look forward to ongoing work in preparing children for this ever-changing world. The future has never been more exciting, and I have no doubt our children at All Saints’ will be prepared for whatever the future holds! Tom Fassler, Head of Lower School
ASEDS BANNER Annual Report 2012– 13
Technology has touched on almost every aspect of our lives in the past 20 years from accessing information and doing research to how we do banking and shopping in our daily lives. Students make casual use of iPhones and take for granted the capabilities that were unthinkable even a decade ago. Technology, with its ability to connect us to the web, is present in our homes, schools, vehicles, and public gathering places and around us at all times. Selecting when and how to use technology with young learners can offer challenges yet also offers tremendous opportunity for innovative learning opportunities.
