orcestershire County Council's Saffron Children's Centre in Stanley Road is calling all dads to join them at 10am to 12pm on Saturday 23rd June for a fun, free, play session and spend some quality time with their children under five. Children and dads will be able to dig, bury, shovel, splash and explore in messy outdoor play and sand and water. They can also use all of the toys, books, costumes and puzzles available in the centre. For those who like to be a little creative, dads and children can make cars, wands, animals or whatever takes their fancy with some sticky junk modelling. The next session is on 23rd June and then takes place every 4th Saturday of the month. Becky Llewellyn, Children's Centre Manager said, "This group has been popular with Dads who want to spend some quality time with their children away from their home environment. It builds their confidence and can inspire them to play more with their children at home."

he Lozells community came together recently, for a day of fun, food and faith. The ‘Food and Faith Festival’ took place at George’s park on a grey and rainy Saturday, but even the dull weather couldn’t keep people away! A fabulous vibe of diversity and community spirit echoed throughout the festival as the different cultures of Lozells united to showcase the perfect example of a multicultural community. From bouncy castles and merry go rounds to face painting and food from every culture, there was something for all the family. Local talent was given the platform to perform on stage after lo-

cal faith leaders spoke about the project which made it possible for everyone to enjoy the day. With funding from Near Neighbours, Pall Singh of The Lozells Project was able to organise an event connecting everyone regardless of age, culture, background or religion, something which local leaders were eager to draw upon: “Diversity is the most beautiful thing. There has been a fantastic turn out and my aim is to sustain this event” said Labour Councillor Waseem Zaffar of Lozells and East Handsworth Ward “in future I would like to see more support from local agencies” he added. “I am also a very strong supporter of interfaith events” added

colleague Councillor Mahmood Hussain “integration of faiths should always be encouraged”.

United

During the riots a few years ago, different faith leaders united to diffuse the escalating situation. Since then, a strong congregation of faith leaders has been created in Lozells, with the Faith and Food festival being just one example of what can be achieved through unity. Local resident Ibrar Masood shared his views on the festival, “It is very pleasing to see everybody come together peacefully. Although we have had tense moments in Lozells in the past, we are still one united community”

Blind Dave brings the Olympic Torch back to West Bromwich S

andwell marathon hero and honorary freeman Blind Dave Heeley brought the Olympic Torch straight back to West Bromwich after carrying the Flame in Stoke. Dave, aged 54, described the experience of carrying the torch as “a wonderful, brilliant experience”. Family and friends travelled to Cobridge, Stoke, to witness Dave’s once-in-a-lifetime moment early this morning (Thursday). This afternoon, he was back in West Bromwich outside the new Sandwell College building, making plans to visit local schools and community groups to show them the torch and share his experiences with them. Dave, who was accompanied on his 300m stretch of the Olympic Torch Relay by guide dog Seamus, said: “It was a wonderful,

brilliant experience. “In some ways it felt like the longest 300m I’ve ever done, in other ways it passed by in a flash and went too quickly. What an amazing experience!” Dave said he wanted to thank everyone who campaigned for him to carry the torch and who came to support him in Stoke. A special thank you went to tandem partner and former Sandwell Police commander Steve Dugmore who set out at 3am to cycle to Cobridge to cheer Dave on.

Ambassador

Council leader Councillor Darren Cooper, who led Sandwell Council’s campaign for Dave to carry the torch, said: “I am very pleased that the Olympic organisers acknowledged Dave’s amazing efforts, which have helped thousands of people. “His unselfish attitude in light of his disability makes him a truly

deserving recipient of this honour. “Once again he has put Sandwell and the Black Country on the map as an ambassador for the area.” Dave, who was born and lives in West Bromwich, became the first blind person to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven days in 2008. And last year he completed a John O’Groats to Land’s End running and cycling challenge for Macmillan Cancer Relief - 1,000 miles in 10 days. He has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities including Guide Dogs and Macmillan Cancer Support. Dave’s family and friends joined councillors and VIPs to see him made the borough’s 11th Honorary Freeman in a ceremony at the Council House in Oldbury in March. Another local charity marathon runner, Graham Howell from Rowley Regis, will also be

Jubilee celebrations for Andy Thaiba Ishtiaq reports on a man who has been entertaining us for as long as our Monarch reigns

C

elebrations kicked off all over Birmingham early this month as thousands gathered to celebrate 60 years of the Queen’s monarchy. Coinciding with Cannon Hill Park’s annual Spring Festival, the ‘Diamond Decades’ party took on 1950s themed entertainment throughout the weekend. From arts, crafts and nature trails to live music, fairground rides and a tea dance on the newly refurbished bandstand, the event turned out a great success despite the grey skies. The Notebenders (featured in The Phoenix May edition) had the honour of playing during the inauguration of the bandstand at Cannon Hill, where bands last played before the Second World War. This was a particularly momentous occasion for the Notebenders whose inspiration, the legendary jazz saxophonist Andy Hamilton, passed away over the weekend. Born in Jamaica in 1918, Andy formed his first band in 1928,

making his first saxophone out of bamboo. He emigrated to the UK in 1949, and lived and worked in Birmingham, forming the Jazz group Blue Notes with fellow Jamaican pianist Sam Brown. Despite his music being so popular, Andy didn’t make an album till he recovered from a diabetic coma in 1991, at the age of 73 years. ‘Silvershine’ became the biggest selling UK jazz album of the year followed by ‘Jamaica at night’. The Notebenders are a product of his work in establishing the Ladywood Community School of Music, a place “To nurture every person's musical aspirations to their full potential". Accordingly Andy was awarded an MBE from the Queen in 2008 for his services to music and the community. The day at Cannon Hill quite fittingly was a day to celebrate the achievements of a woman who has become one of our longest reigning monarchs, but also a day to remember the man, of humble beginnings in the West Indies, who has been entertaining us for just as many years.

Young Indian slum children inspired by Ghandi and King

S

ixteen children from slums in India are giving their UK premiere performances of EKATVA, a show inspired by the lives of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. EKATVA, which means ‘Oneness,’ is a pilgrimage by these young global ambassadors, aged between 11 and 17, to spread the message of compassion, service and unity through a multi-media dance-drama production performed in English at The Drum, in Birmingham, later this month. Organised by the Manav Sadhna organisation based in the Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the EKATVA journey began 2 and half years ago with auditions of more than 8,000 children from Ahmedabad’s four main slum communities and in over nine months, sixteen children were selected. The overall aim was to nurture a deep transformation in the spirit and lives of the children and those involved, and demonstrate the po-

tential for all children to shine if given the opportunity and proper support. Whilst here, the children will also be volunteering and making connections with charitable organisations.

Inspired

Together with the creative support of Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, the EKATVA show and experiment has been directed by Nimesh Patel, a Business School graduate and gifted hiphop artist from the United States. He says: “This has been a journey of personal transformation for me and an opportunity to plant seeds of love and transformation in the hearts of these kids. It’s an experiment to share with the world that will hopefully inspire others to connect and give back to underprivileged children.” Each EKATVA child has faced the daily challenges of living below the poverty line, each with a unique story. Dharmaji, for one, used to pick rags in a rough slum and looked after his father’s

donkeys. He never cared about school and was beaten by his elder sisters. He got connected to ManavSadhna through their street school program, auditioned and was selected, giving him the chance to grow up in a different environment and improve his prospects. Things are picking up. Recently, he was being forced into marriage, but, through his mentor, his parents were convinced otherwise. Now, he is excited about education, and everyone talks about how he used to be and how his whole spirit has changed for the better. EKATVA’s UK international tour is being organised by UKbased charity, Connect India which has had a long-term relationship with ManavSadhna. Connect India’s AniDeveli says: “We believe that not only will the lives of these children be transformed but they will act as role models and an inspiration to all those around them.”

upils in years five and six from Kings Rise Community Primary School, St Margaret Mary's Catholic Primary, Story Wood School, Warren Farm Primary and Christ the King Catholic Primary School were invited to take part in a tag rugby competition organised by Birmingham North Police. The tournament, which was held at Old Edwardians Rugby Club in Kingstanding on Wednesday 30 May, invited teams of youngsters to compete against each other while battling for their spot in the National Tag Rugby Festival to be held in July. The event was organised by PSCOs Tracy Baker, Peter Brown, Cindy Tierney and PC Simon Bolwell from the Kingstanding neighbourhood team.

PC Paul Emms, Young Persons Officer in north Birmingham, said: "The tag rugby scheme has been running in the West Midlands for many years and has been a great success. There is a great amount of talent out there amongst our youngsters! "Some neighbourhood officers from Birmingham North Police have undergone intensive training in tag rugby. This scheme offers young people the chance to take part in a team building and disciplined sport, keep fit, build better relationships with local police officers and create relationships built on mutual respect. "The day was a great success and everyone involved really enjoyed themselves."

The two winning teams from the tournament were St Margaret Mary's Catholic Primary and Christ the King Catholic Primary Schools. Their pupils will now move forward to the regional stage of the competition which is being held at West Midlands Police's training centre, Tally Ho, on Friday 15 June. The winners of that competition will then be invited to compete in the National Tag Rugby Festival held at Rugby School, Rugby in July. The officers involved in the tournament this week would like to thank the Witton Lodge Community Association, who provided funding to buy medals, kit and trophies for the event.

support of local life limited children. Philippa Gay, Major Events Officer, said: “It is wonderful that our ‘hero’ supporters, took courage and came out to support Acorns’ children. Their efforts are such an encouragement, as Acorns is currently caring for 630 children who have life limiting or life threatening conditions and 880 families, including those that are bereaved.” Proud Acorns teamed up with Kerrang! radio team, who are committed to raising funds for local children through their charity Cash for Kids. There is no charge to families for using the services but it does cost £750 per day for each child’s care. Acorns urgently needs donations, relying on them for the majority of its income. Stepping out as a solo artist back in 2009, it was immediately and abundantly clear that Paloma Faith was the complete (and petite) package. A captivating chanteuse, a rabble-rousing entertainer and theatrical fashion chameleon, Faith’s debut album, ‘Do You Want the Truth, or Something Beautiful?’ remains a glossy collection of retro-referencing soul and sassy pop. From the brass-blasted stomp of ‘Stone Cold Sober’, to the epic sweep of her biggest chart hit ‘New York’, the record went on to sell over half a million copies, earning Faith a nomination for Best British Female at the Brit Awards and the honour of closing the 2011 ceremony singing with Cee-Lo Green. At the behest of Chaka Khan, Faith performed ‘I’m Every Woman’ in front of 50,000 people and earned plaudits from Annie Lennox, who selected Faith join

She’s outspoken and unafraid to have an opinion. And as an artist she pulls from a wide range of sources. With a degree in contemporary dance and a Masters in Time Based Arts from Central St Martin’s, Faith is tri-lingual (English, Italian, and conversational Spanish), and a talented actress to boot (she played the romantic foil to Tom Waits’ Devil in the Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Imaginarium of Dr

That’s not to say she lost any of her sartorial and performance panache, but Faith’s focus is on her songwriting. On her new, second album ‘Fall To Grace’ she’s made the decision to strip herself emotionally bare.

Birmingham publisher to launch summer school for writers

B

irmingham-based Tindal Street Press is joining forces with celebrated authors including Helen Cross and Catherine O’Flynn to host a series of intensive creative writing masterclasses over the summer.

B

irmingham is known as a Reggae City with artists like Steel Pulse, UB40, Apache Indian, Bitty McLean and Pato Banton all having roots in the city. With that in mind, this years BASS (British Arts and Street Sounds) Festival, the UK’s only month-long celebration of Black music and arts, has launched its 2012 programme of music, arts and cultural events across Birmingham to explore the unstoppable influence of Jamaica on British creative talent. As part of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence, this years’ series of events shows how much more powerful and apparent it is today, especially in our Jamaican community. Ammo Talwar, founder of festival organiser, Punch, says, “It may be the impact of Dub on our club scene or the way that Dancehall is transforming Street fashion, but Brand Jamaica is touching everyone’s life in Britain today.”

The two-day masterclasses, to be held over four weekends in July and August, will cater to a range of skills from first-time creative writers to experienced authors moving into a new genre. The masterclasses will help new writers put pen to paper, as well as workshopping existing material for practising writers who are stuck on their current project.

Cultural Experience

Running until July, at venues across Birmingham, including Custard Factory, The Jamhouse, mac, Library Theatre, PST, The Edge, The Drum, The Rainbow and Hare and Hounds. the BASS 2012 Festival delves into all aspects of Jamaican culture in the UK, featured the opening of an exhibition by Birmingham painter Mark Anthony Carrol, and premiering new Jazz work from Black British musician, David Grey. Musical highlights include Junior Murvin, whose massive hit “Police and Thieves” became the sound track for the Dread beat and Punk era. London’s hottest soundsystem, The Heatwave present: “Showdown” featuring Gappy Ranks, Top Cat, Lady Leshur and much more. The legends of the Dub scene Channel One play an intimate set for lovers of Roots Reggae, whilst members of Musical Youth and Steel Pulse debate reggae and its impact on the city of Birmingham from the 70’s onwards. BASS is also very proud to honour Birmingham stalwart photographer Vanley Burke with a special commission; “Respek Vanley.” Working with the local community and schools, musician Bobbie Gardner will produce new work which reflects his images. Other festival highlights include "Same Difference" – a new spoken word theatre piece, and a celebration of Rastafarian culture with a Marcus Garvey Day of youth workshops and good vibes. Because Jamaican culture stays close to its roots there will be a whole series of pop-up exhibitions, concerts and dance performances around the city – watch this space!

C

audwell Children, the national children's charity, is calling for people across the country to help make the dreams come true for a group of children with lifelimiting illnesses. They will be taking up to 25 children and their families to Disney World, in Florida, this December as part of their annual Destination Dreams campaign. Designed for children with a high medical dependency, a team of charity staff, paramedics and doctors will join the successful volunteers to assist families and ensure they have a respite from the stresses of constant care, creating some happy memories and

potentially aiding the children's health. Volunteers will assist families around the parks, distribute information and act as the face of the Charity throughout the trip. Individuals wouldn’t necessarily carry out personal care for the children and no medical training is required. Trudi Beswick, Chief Executive at Caudwell Children, said "The Destination Dreams programme offers volunteers a unique experience and an opportunity to really make a difference to the lives of a family faced with the trauma of their child's serious illness." Lindsay Gibb is a Solicitor at law firm Irwin Mitchell. She has

been volunteering for two years, saying: "The trip can seem really daunting, but the charity support you every step of the way beforehand and during the trip. As soon as you meet the families you realise there is nothing to be worried about. It really is a privilege to share such precious memories with them and you come away with so much." One of the parents is Jayne Hughes, who travelled to Florida with her daughter Amy (20) who has Cockayne Syndrome. She said: "Due to Amy's medical needs, our family is often separated as my husband looks after Amy's brothers and sister while I look after her, but because of the

friendly and caring volunteers, we were able to enjoy time together as a family. It was a week none of us will ever forget." The Charity's ambassadors include Hollywood actress and author, Joan Collins, actress Elizabeth Hurley, Rod and Penny Stewart, Peter Andre, Bruce Forsyth and singer, Robbie Williams. Caudwell Children provide treatment, therapy, equipment and family support services for sick and disabled children throughout the UK. To date it has provided services worth over £17 million to thousands of children with different medical conditions.

His trademark anthem, ‘Tutak Tutak Toothiyan,’ is the most successful and fastest selling Bhangra song of all time and the album ‘Up Front’ won Malkit a platinum

disc. Some of his other hit songs have been featured in mainstream films including ‘Jind Mahi’ in Bend It Like Beckham and ‘Gur Nalon Ishq Mitha’ in the film Monsoon Wedding. Malkit received the MBE for his services to Punjabi music and he has was also recognised in the Millennium edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling Bhangra solo artist in the world. An overwhelmed Singh said: “I was extremely delighted to receive this honour by the City of Birmingham. Although Bhangra music originated in Punjab, it was in Birmingham that it was first recognised and popularized.”

Cross, whose My Summer of Love was made into a successful film, and O’Flynn, author of Costa-winning What Was Lost, are among four authors who will join Tindal Street’s publishing director, Alan Mahar, to deliver the courses. Mahar said of the announcement: “This is a chance for first-time creative writers to those more experienced and wanting to try their hard at a new genre. Regardless of where they are on the creative journey, they’ll find their abilities benefit from professional advice, and attending one of our weekend workshops can guide them towards something they can be proud of.” Birmingham-based author, Cross, added: “Every writer needs to learn and practise their craft and strengthen their creative voice. This masterclass programme offers an invaluable opportunity for writers to take risks, explore and develop.” With three books listed for the Booker Prize in the last nine years, it will be a taster for the independent publisher’s upcoming weekly masterclasses, piloted successfully in January and starting again in September. To add to the creative atmosphere, the summer classes will be held in Room 101, known affectionately as The Orwell Suite, at Tindal Street’s home at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. Courses are as follows: ‘Getting Started (6–7 July), ‘Taking on the Novel (3–4 August), Short Story Masterclass (10–11 August) and Writing Crime (27–28).

Olympic Street Parties given the green light Coventry City Council is so pleased with the success of the 40 registered Diamond Jubilee street parties, that it’s planning to do it all again – this time for the Olympics. The August Bank Holiday on 25 - 27 August offers the perfect opportunity for neighbours to once more come together and celebrate what will have been an historic exciting summer, with an Olympic themed street party. The Olympics will be over and the Paralympics about to start, so what better way to mark this momentous time, than by embracing the Olympic ideals of friendship and respect, with neighbours at a street party. Vicky, from the organising committee for the Tudor Avenue Street Party said: “Despite the appalling weather on Sunday 3 June, residents of Tudor Avenue/ Trossachs Road in Eastern Green, were able to go ahead with their Jubilee party thanks to the local Mount Nod School, opening up their hall. The Council is now hoping to build on this success and help bring even more Coventry communities together as Olympic Local Leaders.

any men have concerns about their prostate. But less than half of them feel comfortable talking about them to their GPs. That's the key message from a survey by the European Men’s Health Forum (EMHF) of users of their website www.yourprostate.eu The EMHF’s analysis of questions asked by men in the UK about their prostate health showed that despite being concerned about symptoms fewer than 50% of men had approached a GP before coming on-line to ask their question of a specialist urologist nurse. The questions men most ask about their prostate health concernchanged urination patterns and sexual health. Their concerns included increased frequency, a feeling of imcompleteness, needing to get up several times in the night to wee and getting and maintaining erections. The ‘Your Prostate’ website (www.yourprostate.eu) is an email surgery offering specialist urologist nurses to answer questions and encourage men to seek further medical help on all aspects of prostate health - from the most general of concerns though symptoms, diagnosis, support and treatment to follow-up care.

The Forum is releasing its preliminary findings to coincide with International Men’s Health Week and, building on the success of the English-language service, is also announcing the launch of this pioneering service in German and Spanish. EMHF President Dr Ian banks said: ‘This is probably the first prostate health research project to ask men what they want to know, rather than telling them what they need. The finding that most men have not previously discussed their concerns with a GP proves that this on-line service is long overdue.’ As well as a service for men, yourprostate.eu is also a research project designed to see if men in

Munich or Madrid, Manchester or Marbella think the same way and have similar experiences to men in Berlin or Belfast, Barcelona or Bonn when it comes to the prostate. This insight will be used to design new health materials. Two papers based on the earlier research have already appeared in the Journal of Men’s Health. Dr Ian Banks, called on health professionals and organisations across the EU to get behind the project. He urges that, ‘We must all encourage men to use this site. We have valuable data from the first phase of the project and making the service available in other languages will help us to report on similarities and differences across other cultural backgrounds.’

and what they could do together to help avoid them. They include health issues like: Cardiovascular health conditions (47%), eye problems such as damage to the retina (30%) and sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction (19%).

Diabetes and in improving lives. Dr Katharine Barnard, Health Psychologist and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, comments: “Given that 68% of people with diabetes are talking to their family about their condition, with nearly 1 in 10 talking to them more often than healthcare professionals, we need to ensure that they are armed with the knowledge and guidance they need, so they can provide the best support possible. Conversations at home should be supportive and enquiring about the kind of help the person with diabetes would like. Cooking healthy meals for the whole family or going for a walk together can help increase the exercise level of the whole family. Gentle nudging towards healthier lifestyles for the whole family is far more effective than nagging. Working together to help the person with diabetes feel empowered to make those vital lifestyle changes has the added benefit of helping to improve the health of the family overall.”

Diabetes sufferers putting themselves at unnecessary risk

A

n NHS audit has found that around one million diabetes patients face a higher risk of stroke, blindness, heart attacks and amputation because they are getting too few medical checks. According to the National Diabetes Audit, over half of people with diabetes in Britain are receiving all nine checks. Harnessing the power of relatives’ support identified as key to better management of type 2 diabetes people could live healthier lives and avoid complications if their loved ones were better armed to help them manage their condition. Research reveals that families are ready and willing to help but they need more information and greater guidance on how best to provide support. A third say they were unaware of what health checks their loved ones should have. Pharmacists are well placed to provide this through expert consultations and discussions about how to best manage type 2 diabetes.” Of families questioned, over half (56%) have had a loved one experience a complication, but six in 10 (62%) believe they could have helped if they’d been more aware of what the complications might be, what might cause them

Keeping Healthy

In terms of what support family members would like to receive, research found: Over six in 10 (61%) want more guidance on what to do if their loved one has a health problem as a result of their diabetes, over four in 10 (46%) want to better understand the medication their loved one had been prescribed, nearly two thirds (59%) want help on how to better encourage their loved one to make diet and lifestyle changes without feeling like they are nagging, half (50%) would like more information on how to inspire and motivate their loved one to take better control of their condition and, finally, a third (36%) of family members are unaware of what health checks their loved one should have each year. With 80% of the NHS’s 9.8 billion annual UK diabetes bill being spent on treating complications, mobilising the wealth of support could prove a powerful weapon in better management of Type 2

Boots UK has launched the Diabetes Information Service which can help support those living with the condition, providing information as well as valuable advice and guidance for their families.

Fergie goes “Wet & Wild”

Katy Perry “Meow” Singer Katy Perry, has recently launched a new fragrance called “Meow“. Inspired by the cat-woman Katy Perry is posing for her advertising campaign in a leopard print latex suit. With Katy Perry’s first fragrance donning the name “Purr,” it came as no surprise when the star revealed that

her follow-up scent will be called “Meow”. Perry created "Meow!" while on her "California Dreams" WorldTour promoting her platinumselling second record, Teenage Dream. This scent is a wearable interpretation of the fun, sensual spirit of fun; in fact, Perry felt the name of the fragrance needed an exclamation point

at the end of it. While "Purr" marks Perry's first foray into the fragrance world, "Meow!," more than anything, embodies her energy. Meow, commands a soft sexuality appropriate for use during any time of day. Its signature comes from a pairing of honeysuckle and pear with the backdrop of creamy vanilla, musk and amber.

G-Star Raw flagship store With 680 square meters divided over two levels, the new Hong Kong flagship store is G-Star’s largest flagship store to date. The opening of this new flagship store further supports G-Star’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The new Hong Kong store is located in Leighton Centre and showcases many special features

including a floor to ceiling LCD panel installation which will be streaming video content, a custom dressing area and it’s unique façade. The façade is constructed from a double layer of Corten steel sheeting – that gives the façade a ‘rusty’ look - a material never before used in Hong Kong - cut

with a custom-designed G-Star pattern. Soaring more than six storeys high, by day the raw nature of the steel contrasts sharply with the surrounding concrete buildings and by night, built-in lighting washes the surface creating a big G-Star lantern visible from far away.

Rihanna Rebelles

With much anticipation, Rihanna’s new fragrance Rebelle will finally be available later this month and has been “built off the sexy back of Reb’l Fleur”, her first fragrance. Rihanna asked her fans to vote on the name of the new fragrance in a poll on her webiste in which 68% chose Rebelle. She describes the scent as being “like high heels with a short, flirty dress” and is packaged in a variation of the original bottle.

S

eal pays loving homage to that vibrant time in his own musical life with Soul 2, his eighth studio album, bringing his immense talents and deep sensibilities to songs that were coming out of Detroit, Memphis and especially Philadelphia, a sound that in England became known as Northern Soul. Working with producer Trevor Horn (who launched Seal’s career and produced his first four albums) and on four songs David Foster (who produced Seal’s first foray into the classics catalog, the international hit 2008 album Soul, and 2010‘s Commitment), Seal at once internalizes and evokes the spirit of such musical giants as Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers, the Spinners and the O’Jays.

Seal’s first Soul album captured, by-and-large, the spirit of the ‘60s, with songs of Sam Cooke (a glorious version of “A Change Is Gonna Come”), Otis Redding among others, selling

3 million copies worldwide and standing as the top-selling album of the decade in France. Soul 2 leans more to the ‘70s, digging deep into a time in which artists explored new heights of personal expression and cultural openness with equal measures of inventive creativity and populist immediacy. As a set it features love songs (the Chi-Lites’ “Oh Girl,” Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ “Ooo Baby Baby”), out-of-love songs (Pendergrass’ “Love T.K.O.,” Rose Royce’s “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”) and some that are both (the Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around”). As a set, they show a time that defies capsulizing and cliches, a time of complex emotions and issues. And it allows Seal to expand the range and talents he’s shown throughout his career, on such hits as his international Top 10 1990 debut “Crazy” and the 1995 U.S. No. 1 “A Kiss From a Rose,” which earned him Grammy Awards for song of the year, record of the year and best male pop vocal performance.

Here at Street Cred, we love our movies, so this month we’re bringing you coverage of an upcoming movie that you do

not want to miss out on! Total Recall, a remake of the Arnie classic is hitting the big screen and it looks set to be a really big

hit for everyone involved! Move over Arnie, there’s a new kid in town...

Do you have T Total Recall?

otal Recall is a film based on a short story, that was first brought to the big screen in 1990 with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. With Colin Farrell taking over from Arnie, it looks set to be one of the big films of the summer! Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) – there is no one Quaid can trust, except possibly a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) working for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy). The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. The film is directed by Len Wiseman. The screenplay is by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback and the screen story is by Ronald Shusett & Dan O’Bannon and Jon Povill. The producers are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe. The film is out in cinemas August 3.

f you wanted to hear something new, fresh, young and kind of leftfield, ‘Rising Rock featuring The Ocean’s Eyes,’ at Birmingham’s O2 Academy ticked all the right boxes and then some. Featuring a choice number of up and coming bands, with no sense of fear or inhibitions, it was a showcase of what’s bright and exciting for the future music. Led by the band in the night’s title, The Ocean’s Eyes produced full energy, punch, and singalong choruses, exactly what the event set out to do. Starting off with Scarlet Creek, a 4-piece band which was created at Cadburys College, in south Birmingham, they grinded out their own take on alternative rock which was a great indication of what was to come. With an age range of 17-19, this

wasn’t their debut live performance, them having showcased their talent whilst busking in St. Phillips ‘Pigeon Park,’ before their first live, sanctioned gig, at The Flapper, in the city.

Bright Talent

Another band of fresh, new things was 8-Bit Monster, whose metal core style of music was both refreshing and quite listenable, whatever your musical taste is. This 5-piece band, again from Birmingham, started at an even earlier stage in their lives, at school in Northfield. For lead singer, Sophie Rawle it was a triumph against adversity, she having joined the band only twoweeks before the night. Whatever Tomorrow Brings is an older band providing their own alternative take on a blend of punk and indy. The 4 band members have been together for

4 years-starting at South Birmingham College-and have already played the O2, HMV Institute and the Sound Bar, as well as having an EP, which they done last year. The Ocean’s Eyes finished the night off in fine style. This 5-piece pop/punk band from London blended memorable pop with a raw punk edge, causing a stir throughout Britain since 2010. Raw passion with tracks executed with such gusto it brings a whole new dimension to the music industry. This was a very special night based on ‘youth.’ The organizer was 14-year-old King Edwards for Girls student, Aaliyah Williams and the majority of the packed crowd were 14-19, willingly chaperoned by their parents/ guardians. On the evidence of this night, the future is bright.

o much talent in the UK is unheard and even though we have Britain’s Got Talent you don’t get to see much of the raw urban acts that many of us want to see. Right now we have our eye on this young girl who is currently making a buzz on the streets as a singer songwriter and presenter. Her name is Jay_S. You may have caught her interview with the legendary Shola Ama on SC TV and Richard Blackwood. We also showcased her at the SC Chatroom party where she did an amazing rendition of Killing Me Softly. Jay_S is a young a bubbly soulful singer coming from a family that has experience in music that is looking to make waves in the entertainment industry. Already she ghost writes for singers and produces R&B and funky house music , for a 23 year old you’d be surprised at the type of music that moves her. ‘ growing up I listened to what my mum and dad listened to, and that was good soul and reggae.’ Says a bubbly Jay_S ‘I just loved earth wind and fire Cameo and Diana Ross.’ ‘I find those musical influences have helped me to be really melodic. Sometimes my friends wonder what the hell I am singing as

just a dream to listen to. From playing Glastonbury to appearing on stage with Beres Hammond they’ve already boast a list of major venues at which they have performed and international stars they’ve toured with, the likes of which will give you good enough reason to put them up there as one of the country’s biggest band: “We live for our music,” says lead vocalist, Toppa-G. Abelwell’s second album, ‘Fine Incense,’ is out now, propagating the message of love for all regardless of race colour and gender. They’ve drawn the attention of the likes of Radio1 DJs, Trevor Nelson and Chris Goldfinger who, respectively, describe their sound as authentic and appealing to everybody. They will be at the Jamaican 50th Anniversary Celebrations in Wolverhampton’s Weston Park later this year, as well as the massive Reggae Sunsplash showcase, in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

l We caught Jay_S in the middle of a recording session! I always hum old tunes from the 70’s. But my best time for music was the 90’s I loved Mariah SWV Jade TLC and that just made me fall in love with music more’ Jay_S started out in a girl group called Madam Sound and auditioned for X Factor two years ago, this was fun times but sadly fell apart when Simon Cowell said that they didn’t go well with eachother. The words of Simon influenced the girls to split up as he wanted to completely change their sound and look. At first they took the advice but as time went on they found they couldn’t get along as the whole concept of Madam sound went down the drain. Jay S decided to embark on a solo career and invest in her mini studio which has enabled her to produce her own music. She is currently collaborating with many grime and hip hop MCs in Birmingham. At the moment she is a popular choice to have as a female on underground

tracks. ‘Ive seen alot in my life, many of my friends and family have lost their way but they all look to me and I love that.I am really greatful for the support of my dad who is also a musicaian and I learn alot from him as he is well experienced in that field. I really do love music as I feel its a great way to reach people. I don’t really want to be the typical image led act I want songs out there that have meaning and can uplift young people’ We’ve put Jay_S in the spotlight this issue and we definitely feel she is one to look out for. This could be the new R&B star from Birmingham. Right now she is available for performances of her own songs and covers. If you want powerful and sultry vocals then Jay_S doesn’t fail to please. You can contact Streetcred for booking details. Look out for her new mixtape to hit the roads this year. We will keep you updated.

here isnt R&B without R Kelly, you can not deny that this man puts the genre on the map. We dont hear much media wise from this man but doesnt mean that he hasnt been working. R Kelly is constantly touring and recording music. The Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and producer, will release his 11th studio album, Write Me Back, on June 25th. Write Me Back is the follow up to 2010’s critically acclaimed Love Letter, which celebrated the music of the 50s and 60s. The new album represents the natural progression of Kelly’s musical time machine, recalling the sultry and seductive sounds associated with such icons as Barry White, Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass, among others. Like its Love Letter predecessor, Write Me Back is also a celebration of love and that is what we love him for.

R Kelly always boasts that he has a lot to do with the birth of babies since the 90’s, from classic R&B to hip-hop, inspirational to gospel, no other artist has covered the vast array of human emotions more than R. Kelly. With a track record that boasts over 40 million

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS - BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

F

estivities rung throughout the Nation as Britain and the Commonwealth celebrated 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign. The much anticipated Diamond Jubilee spanned out over a period of a four day national holiday in honour of the Queen and the years she has devoted to the country.

Queen and crowd with impressive tricks.

Greeted with cheers from the crowds as 130,000 people gathered to greet her and the Duke, Her Majesty the Queen arrived at Epsom Derby to uphold a tradition she has carried out for the last 60 years. Her love of all things equestrian has always been apparent, so what better way to launch a long weekend entirely devoted to her and her achievements over the years, than at one of the highlights of the horse racing calendar.

Meanwhile, 21 mini cannons were fired at Windsor Castle to mark the start of the Diamond Jubilee weekend, followed by a 41 gun salute by the The King’s Troop, Royal House Artillery, and 21-gun salutes at Edinburgh Castle, Belfast and Cardiff. Street party preparations were underway all over Britain as 1000 boat crews put the finishing touches to their vessels. The Diamond Jubilee Pageant was assembled to escort the Royal barge seven miles from Battersea to Tower Bridge, and was the largest flotilla to have ever been brought together on the Thames.

The fabulous carnival atmosphere, complete with stilt walkers and live music made the grey weather seem so much less daunting. Katherine Jenkins performed the national anthem to a huge cheer from the crowd as winners of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, Ashleigh and her dog Pudsey, entertained the

The London 2012 Olympics was recognised with the presence of the Great Britain women’s hockey team, who were amongst a host of celebrities including Donna Air, Mischa Barton, Phil Tuffnell and Matt Dawson.

The ‘Spirit of Chartwell’ carried the Royal family at the centre of an impressive fleet of rowed boats, working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes

and sizes, drawing over one million rain soaked people to the Thames. The pageant culminated in a performance of the National Anthem by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal College of Music Chamber Choir at Tower Bridge as the last vessel completed the route. Lord Salisbury, Chairman of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation, said: "We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Her Majesty The Queen, the Royal Family and all those people who braved the elements to come out to enjoy our Pageant. We hope it was a fitting tribute to 60 years of service. I would also like to pay tribute to our Pageant team. It was a triumph of their professionalism and years of hard work." In the meantime, thousands up and down the country braved the rain to party outdoors as part of the ‘Big Jubilee Lunch’ project. Communities came together in traditional street party style celebrating Britain’s diversity, alongside the 60 year reign of the monarch who has long since openly embraced multiculturalism.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS - ROUND UP

Bringing our communities and country together More than a million people, from a multitude of communities braved the poor conditions to pay respect to the Queen, during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, that she was moved to make a speech in response to the euphoric outpouring.

She, deeply touched and humbled by what she witnessed at firsthand, talked of how overwhelmed she was at the way the celebrations had brought communities together as one. Equally overwhelmed she made the decision to make the address after witnessing the groundswell of public support in the run-up to the Jubilee weekend. She said. “The events that I have attended to mark my Diamond Jubilee have been a humbling experience. It has touched me deeply to see so many thousands of families, neighbours and friends celebrating together in such a happy atmosphere. This is something that has brought the country

together and you definitely notice that in my constituency, in the smallest villages that I went to. In the whole country, everyone's talking to each other, everyone is chatting with their neighbors. It brings communities of people together, whatever your politics." With the her husband, Duke of Edinburgh, taken to hospital with a bladder infection she showed great courage and dedication to Her people by choosing to go ahead with her duties and responsibilities hours later. They have been married for 64 years with the Queen credits him as being her ‘strength and stay’ for the six decades of her reign. It’s been an eventful six decades with a huge number of positives during her reign. To date, who better to represent us than the always regal, stoic and upstanding Queen-of all our community’s collective hearts?

The Queen’s musical Jubilee celebration

F

Take That front-man, Gary Barlow, deserves a knighthood for putting together such an event, on the Her front doorstep. Take that, then, eh?

Stars, old and fairly new paid their own respect in a weekend of celebrations with a concert that you, me and they will remember for years to come.

Grace Jones’s extraordinary display with those hula-hoops proved a ‘show-stealer’ as she oozing charisma others lack, her classic ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ caused everything in her wake to curl up and wither away. A standout performance, if ever there was one, with stunned looks from the royal box, she won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Ego’s put too one side and stars from Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Tom Jones and Sir Cliff Richard, to JLS, Cheryl Cole, Jessie J and Ed Sheeran rocked the rain soaked night, leaving us overwhelmed with what we were all a part of.

The Queen did miss first hour and half a miss, which meant she got there in time for Grace’s typically ‘Grace’ performance. She also managed to take in rock’s own royal family of Sir Paul McCartney, Elton, Stevie and Shirley, who all serenaded her quite amicably, with their indi-

or anyone to have a gig in your front garden must be the dream present. For Her Royal Highness, a concert of mega-proportions on Horse Guards Parade, with the biggest names in the world of music in her ‘front garden,’ as it were, was a triumph for all that is great in music and the Queen herself.

vidual hits including ‘Your Song,’ ‘Sir Duke,’ ‘All My Loving’ and ‘Diamonds Are Forever.’ They definitely rocked crowd. Pop veterans Madness’ performance at the end the night’s fes-

tivities was, as they always are, refreshing and, as on the night, very poignant, especially with their performance of ‘Our House’ from the roof of Buckingham Palace.

Also worth mentioning that between the music acts, hosting duties were handled amicably by comedy’s own royalty, Dudleyman, Lenny Henry, Rob Brydon, Miranda Hart, and Lee Mack.

With an OBE now to his name, doesn’t ‘Sir Gary’ have a little ring to it?

ART

Rishi J has that magic touch

E

ver since Rishi Jethwa could put pen to paper, he let himself be inspired by his love of cars, recreating each model perfectly as his passion increased and developed into what it is now; a unique art, or in his own words, a unique vision. At 22years old, Rishi works as a Pharmacy Technician, but fter seeing the quality of his work exhibited on the community board at a local Tesco branch, one can not help but ask why such a talent isn’t being pursued as a career. The reason is clear once you meet him. Rishi is a buzzing, energetic entrepreneur full of creative flair and the unique

ability to juggle his multiple skills and interests:

“As humans we pick up many skills during our lives, naturally, we only put into use the ones we need and leave the rest on the shelf as ‘back up’. The only thing different about me is that I want to put all of my skills into practice!” says Rishi. Juggling a degree in Automotive Design & Engineering at Aston University with his pharmacy job, and his artwork, Rishi is in his element. His art is no longer just a hobby; the popularity he has gained has put him on the road to establishing his own business producing pieces of art for customers as sentimental gifts. Drawing eve-

rything from portraits to cars to items of jewellery in scrupulous detail, Rishi calls himself an innovator and a passion designer rather than an artist; as he creates a vision for the future.

Ambitious and always thinking out of the box, Rishi has long since decided that he would rather be ‘a jack of all trades than a master of one’. Realising the importance of social skills and networking, he uses these skills to his advantage, encouraging other young people to do the same “don’t be afraid of connecting with people, asking them what they’re all about and telling them about you. You don’t know how many opportunities are out there waiting for you!”

£162mil boost to fund English Arts and Heritage Purnima a real jewel Organisations

T

hirty four arts and heritage organisations across England are set to get a £162 million funding boost after successfully applying for a share of a new £56 million scheme to support endowments. The successful projects are expected to attract an additional £106 million from private and corporate donors as a result of the scheme. The Catalyst: Endowments programme is a joint initiative between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Designed to bring new money into the cultural sector, the programme offers match-funding to help arts and heritage organisations become more sustainable and resilient by building a new endowment fund or developing an existing one, in order to increase their annual income. The organisations will use the grants of between £500,000 and £5 million to attract money from private philanthropic sources. Applications were assessed by an independent panel chaired by Michael Portillo, and final awards made by the National Council of Arts Council England and the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Lottery Fund. Many of the successful applicants have already secured pledges from donors, or are in productive discussions with prospective corporate and individual sponsors. Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt said: “Long term financial stability is an essential part of a successful cultural sector. With these grants, and the additional money they are bringing in, I’m delighted that we’ve been able to get a significant number of organisations on the road to long-lasting and sustainable endowments which will continue to support their work for years to come.”

Successful Projects

Michael Portillo said: “The Advisory Panel was impressed with the calibre of the applications we saw. I believe those we recommended for approval are well-placed to secure match

funding from donors, and to build endowments which should strengthen their future financial resilience.” Dame Jenny Abramsky, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “The Catalyst: Endowments Programme is part of our response to helping boost private giving across the heritage sector. Alongside our plans to build the fundraising capacity of smaller groups, we expect the programme to form part of a shift in approach to philanthropic giving that will help build financial resilience and attract new money to heritage groups of every size.”

Cultural Sector

Dame Liz Forgan, Chair of Arts Council England said: “Public funding of the arts in this country is at the heart of their success. It enables organisations to attract private investors, and gives them the confidence to continue to take the bold artistic leaps that keep audiences coming. “Catalyst Endowments and Catalyst Arts will help support that public investment, increasing the sustainability of our world class arts organisations who bring delight to millions and play such an important part in our national economy.” Successful organisations include: • The Halle Concerts Society which will receive £1 million to create an endowment to support educational activity at St Peter’s Ancoats and more ambitious large-scale artistic projects; • Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust in Bristol which will receive £500,000 to build an endowment to help secure the future of the 45 acre site, saved from commercial development by local people, where a sensitive restoration programme is now underway; • Birmingham Royal Ballet which will receive £1 million for an endowment which will be used to fund a dance fellowship that will support young dancers; • The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, County Durham, which will receive £1 million towards creating an endowment fund that will generate income to support the Museum’s inter-

nationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts; • The Serpentine Gallery which will receive £3 million to create an endowment which will support activity at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery; • The Old Vic Theatre which will receive £5 million to create an endowment which will support long-term resilience and arts activity; • St Martin-in-the-Fields in London which will receive £1 million towards building a major endowment to secure the long term maintenance of the recently restored Grade I listed buildings; and • The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) which will receive a match-funding pledge of £5 million to support the Museum’s ambitions to build a £100 million endowment over the next 15 to 20 years. The endowment will support its core scholarly activities that include research and conservation, alongside its permanent collection of over 2.75 million objects.

Boost

Endowments are typically large funds held in perpetuity by organisations, helping to provide long term financial security by contributing to annual running costs through the interest earned by the fund. They are often used in the United States by large cultural organisations but are currently less common in the UK. The Catalyst: Endowments fund is part of a package of measures put in place by the Government designed to increase philanthropy for cultural organisations. Other measures include: • a change in inheritance tax rules to increase the number of people leaving money to charitable causes in their will; • the establishment of a new Cultural Gifts Scheme which will encourage the donation of preeminent objects or works of art to the nation in return for a reduction in tax liability; and • reform of gift aid, reducing administrative burdens and allowing charities to claim gift aid on up to £5000 of small payments each year made without a gift aid declaration.

Owner Ruhul Islam explains how he spent three days with a wine specialist selecting the best of trade wines, “the wines available

at Purnima are of the best quality. You can’t get them anywhere else!” “I have been in the restaurant business for 20 years, I know how important it is to provide an excellent service alongside excellent food” he adds. Apprentice surge backed by Chamber A campaign to increase the number of businesses taking on apprentices is being backed by Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group at a special event next month. David Way, chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, will speak at the event to be held at Birmingham Metropolitan College on Thursday, July 26. He said: "We want to rid businesses in our area of some of the myths we read about the recruitment of apprentices and replace that with facts. Employers will be encouraged to take up the offer of one-to-one 'surgeries' with National Apprenticeship Staff as part of the event. For many businesses, the recruitment of apprentices is the starting point for boosting pro-

ductivity and efficiency. It also develops the very latest skills sets, drives business growth and workforce motivation." The Chamber's VicePresident Steve Brittan, managing director of BSA Machine Tools, is taking one of his apprentices to the event to share their experiences. And Clara Kenyon, director of customers, curriculum and qualifications at OCR, one of the UK's leading providers of apprenticeships and part of the University of Cambridge, will talk about the value of qualifications. Jerry Blackett, Birmingham Chamber's chief executive, said: "I am delighted to be offering this excellent, free event to our members. The Chamber fully supports the apprenticeship programme and I hope as many of our l members will support it as possible."

Teaming up with Andy Rysztogi, a Birmingham coach driver by trade, they have made it their goal to address the gap in the market “Britain is known for its diversity and multiculturalism, every nationality feels at home here. Those of eastern European origin have also become a part of that now, Paprikás aims to address their needs and share their culture and food with the rest of the community” says Andy. Hungarian food traditionally consists of a variety of soups and stews. In rural Hungary such dishes are still prepared outdoors in large cauldron type pots as family members gather around the communal fire to share the meal. Hav-

Hungarian food with a twist, Paprikás does not solely target a fixed audience. Introducing vegetarian and also Halal options it recognises the different requirements of the community it now belongs to. Enhancing the street scene to benefit traders and visitors

T

raders and visitors to Wolverhampton are being asked to give their views on proposed new rules on the use of A-boards and tables and chairs outside city businesses. A consultation on Wolverhampton City Council’s draft policy covering A-boards, tables and chairs and goods on the highway outside premises such as shops, cafes and bars is expected to be launched on July 1. A number of city businesses and key stakeholders, such as disability groups, have already been consulted with and provided feedback that has shaped the proposed policy. The aim of the policy is to encourage traders to promote their businesses in a way that enhances the area, making it attractive to shoppers, while also being sensitive to the needs of all road users. The council is keen to support businesses to prosper in Wolverhampton and provide an enhanced experience for visitors, such as

fostering a café culture. But there is also a need to ensure pedestrians, particularly visually impaired and disabled people and parents with pushchairs, are able to move freely through obstacle free streets. Now the authority is seeking the views of all traders and residents across Wolverhampton on the proposals. Aspects of the draft policy being considered include: *Ensuring at least 1.5 metres is available on the footway for pedestrians from items placed on highway to nearest obstruction and/or carriageway *Each business will generally only be permitted one A-board *Items placed on the highway must not block fire exits Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Prosperity, said: “We are committed to helping businesses prosper and enhance and promote the city for residents, shoppers and visitors.

“To help us achieve this, we have produced a draft policy for the use of A-boards, tables and chairs and goods on the highway “With this we want to work closely with all traders to promote their businesses and also improve the streets. It is also a balancing act in that we need to ensure pedestrians are able to move safely and freely on streets so that they can enjoy what these businesses have to offer. But I want to stress that this is a consultation. We want to hear everyone’s views on the proposals and all comments will be welcome and taken on board.” Wolverhampton City Council’s Licensing Committee previously confirmed a reduced tables and Chairs application fee of £25 (from £261- the same fee of £25 will apply to applications for Aboards) and is set to discuss these new proposals at a meeting next week. The consultation is due to begin on July 1.

National campaign to suit-up the homeless unemployed receives over 1000 donations

With nearly 80% of homeless people wanting to get a job and support themselves, this spring tailoring company A Suit That Fits teamed up with three homelessness charities to help their members get back into work. In a climate with 2.63 million people unemployed in the UK, the pressure is on to impress at interview and studies have shown that first impressions, like what you wear, affect your fundamental judgement of a person.

Are you looking for a business opportunity, or looking for Mary Kay products to purchase? Call Mary on 07834 517 097

For seven weeks, suits were donated to the Suit for Success campaign and donators were rewarded with a £50 tailoring voucher. Donated suits were gifted to homelessness charities Amber, Broadway and Emmaus, who all work with their members to help them support themselves. Each charity offers work and learning outreach programs to their members to equip them with the skills and confidence they need to get a job and be able to fully support themselves. But they regularly find their members have nothing to wear to their interview, which affects their confidence and impacts that allimportant ‘first impression’. By providing them with a smart suit

we are making the process just a little bit easier. F1 analyst and Amber supporter Eddie Jordan and television presenter Rick Edwards backed the campaign.

Suit Up

Paul Wilson is a trustee at Broadway – he is 57 and came to Broadway in 2008; Paul benefited from Eddie Jordan’s suit and is currently looking for work In 2003, Paul was married with two children, and living in London, where he owned his own construction business with a childhood friend. When he caught his wife having an affair with his business partner, not only did his

marriage breakdown, but it also signaled the end of his business. When he approached the council for help, he was informed that he was not a priority for housing, and he ended up sleeping on the streets. Due to the trauma of this, Paul started drinking heavily as a coping mechanism. After a long process of rehab, social services put Paul in touch with Broadway. Paul is now an incredibly active member of not just Broadway, but homelessness services throughout London. He is now living completely independently, and looking for a job.

Birds see red and...

B

right red cars attract more bird droppings than vehicles of any other colour, according research from Halfords. A study recorded the frequency that birds left their mark on cars in five cities around the UK, and found crimson motors were targeted the most. Green cars were found to suffer least, followed by silver, while white vehicles escaped more often than black in the analysis of 1,140 cars in Brighton, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Bristol over two consecutive days, to see whether colour made a difference to birds. During the study, drivers were

also asked how quickly they removed droppings from their cars. Only 17 per cent, one in six, said they wiped off deposits immediately when they saw them, 20 per cent said they took action “within a couple of days” while 55 per cent waited until the next car wash. The remaining 8% never washed their cars or left it to others to organise.

Green Stays Clean

As well as being unsightly, insurance industry figures show bird droppings on vehicles can be an expensive problem and estimate the damage caused by birdpoop-stained paintwork costs motorists £57m a year in unnecessary repairs.

How to: Remove bird poo 1. Remove at the earliest opportunity 2. A moist cloth should be used – Autoglym Bird Dropping Wipes are ideal – to gently lift the deposit from the vehicle surface. 3. If the deposit is dry or

doesn’t lift easily, place a moist cloth over it for ten minutes to soften the deposit 4. Dispose of any cloth or wipe used to remove bird droppings immediately and carefully wash your hands, as bird lime can harbour diseases

ar giant ŠKODA has installed a unique replica of Wiltshire’s iconic Stonehenge - made entirely from recycled car parts - on London’s Southbank. The sculpture, which has been unveiled in time for the evening of the Summer Solstice (20th June), has been specially positioned to sit on little known ley lines and is set to become one of the key talking points in the capital this summer… With the new car as its centrepiece, the audacious piece of automotive art dubbed ‘Citihenge’ by the makers, was specially commissioned to celebrate the launch of the ŠKODA Citigo. The giant build will be in position on the Southbank on 19 and 20 June. Citihenge, led by sculptor Tommy Gun, took a design team three months to create. The am-

bitious piece of art, built using 18 scrap cars, stands at over five metres tall. Each henge is five metres wide and the commanding structure weighs a remarkable 36 tonnes.

Gun, a self-taught artist who specialises in big sculptures often made from machine parts, has exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show and The Grand Designs Show, Olympia, and was commissioned to produce a sculpture for the Tour de France. The installation is the latest in a series of cultural creative projects undertaken by ŠKODA, which has included giant cakes, a car in a cage and collaborations with musicians Anastacia and DJ Tiësto. Available to order now, with first deliveries in September, the refreshed design of the Astra Hatch and Sports Tourer – both of which are built at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire – gives the cars a more bold and aggressive appearance. Both body styles get a new front grille, with repositioned logo-bar in the upper section and a re-styled lower section too. Stonehenge is a huge, iconic structure and the Citihenge replica is too. It is made entirely from old car parts, which taps into my own childhood growing up on a farm where I used to love building and creating things with pieces of discarded machinery.”

New-look Astra pricing remains unchanged from the previous model.

Also available to order from today is the Astra GTC 2.0 CDTi BiTurbo, which will become the most powerful non-VXR model in the range, producing 195PS and 400Nm of torque. And while the extra power and torque give it a healthy lift in performance with 0-60mph arriving in just 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 139mph, the BiTurbo still achieves a combined 53.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km. All BiTurbos receive Vauxhall’s Start/Stop system as standard.

1. The structure is engineered to withstand force 12 hurricane winds. 2. 36 tonnes of steel used in the structure (including the cars). 3. The entire structure weighs 30 tonnes. 5. The accumulative mileage of the cars used in the structure is 1.9 million. 6. The structure was erected on site in London in less 12 hours. 7. The Citihenge structure is 100% recyclable.

Uniquely in this class, the GTC uses a sequential turbocharging system, with the smaller turbo accelerating quickly at lower speeds to eliminate ‘lag’, providing 350Nm of torque from just 1500rpm. In the mid-range, both turbochargers work together providing maximum torque of 400Nm between 1750-2500rpm. The Astra GTC BiTurbo enters the range at £23,925 – a premium of £995 over the GTC 2.0 CDTi 165PS model – but in addition to extra power and torque, receives: bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels, Electronic Climate Control, 6mm lower ride-height, a new bodykit and ‘Track’ interior trim, with a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel.

Hybrid Audi R8 e-tron quattro takes pole position at Le Mans 24 Hours P remiere at the Le Mans 24 Hours: The 80th running of the endurance classic that has been held since 1923 will see a sports car with hybrid drive starting from grid position one for the first time - the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro. The intelligent combination of TDI power at the rear axle and an electrically driven front axle made it possible for André Lotterer in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro designated as car number "1" to achieve a fastest lap of 3m 23.787s in the final qualifying session on Thursday night shortly after 22:00 - and thus an improvement of last year’s best time by nearly two seconds. "The car was running like it was on rails, simply incredible," raved the 31-year-old German as he praised the advantages of the new type of electric quattro drive that is already being tested at Audi for use in production vehicles. "The guys at Audi Sport did a top job yet again and made my first pole position at Le Mans possible for me. Many thanks to them for this!" But not only the R18 e-tron

quattro showed a convincing performance on both qualifying days at Le Mans. World championship front runner Loïc Duval in the fastest conventionally powered number "3" R18 ultra was merely 0.291 seconds slower. "My lap wasn't’ completely free, more would have been possible," reported the Frenchman. "That’s why I’d actually expected my time to be beaten. But the main goal was to be in front of Toyota and we achieved this."

First

Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen in the number "2" Audi R18 e-tron quattro set the fourth-fastest lap (3m 25.433s) behind the quickest hybrid vehicle from Toyota. Le Mans rookie Marco Bonanomi in the number "4" Audi R18 ultra took grid position six (3m 26.420s). This meant that all four vehicles fielded by Audi Sport Team Joest qualified for the three front rows. After 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2011, this marked the seventh pole position for Audi at Le Mans. Each time, the brand with the four rings secured the complete front row at those events

this is just a very small step. The much bigger task is still ahead the race. Therefore, as always, we used the two practice days almost exclusively to work on the race set-up. The result is that we’ve now got cars that are very good to drive and which until now ran with absolute reliability too. But you could also very impressively see today that you can’t only be fast at Le Mans with a diesel – that’s exactly what we’ve always said. This double pole is the nicest thank you for the entire squad that has been working hard on preparing the cars so superbly." The 80th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours will be started on Saturday at 15:00 and broadcast live by numerous TV channels worldwide. At www.audi-liveracing. com Audi is offering live streaming in which spectators can continually watch the race from the onboard perspective of the Audi R18 cars. The smallest Audi made a big appearance at Le Mans as well. The A1 quattro that is produced in a limited number of 333 cars will be driven in front of the field on the formation lap.

TRAVEL

Half of all holidays are taken by the over 45’s

The Phoenix–June 2012

Lovebirds flock to El Gouna

Older travellers today account for over half of all holiday spending, with the trend only set to increase, according to a report published this week by leading escorted travel specialist Travelsphere. The Travelsphere ‘Frequent Flying and Globe Trekking Older Travellers Report’, prepared in association with Mintel Research Consultancy, debunks the myth that older consumers are one homogenous group. Those aged 4554 opt for frequency, taking more holidays abroad than any other age group, while those aged 55-64 were the only segment to increase long haul travel between 2008-10, in the context of an overall market decline of 9%. Older travellers are today’s globetrotters - 40% of all long haul trips were taken by 45-64 year olds in 2010. People over 65 years old are the most prolific of the older 45+ market, with 28% taking two or more foreign holidays a year, compared to 19% of all British holidaymakers. The report also dispels images of how older people travel and book their holidays, showing those over 55 are more likely to go on a touring holiday than young backpackers, and are more likely to book their whole trip online than under 45 year olds, with two thirds doing so, rather than 57% of the younger group.

Time, Interest & Energy What is clear from the research is that while current economic hardships have impacted harder on the holidaying habits of the under 45s, those over 45 still consider holidays essential. Two thirds of over 55s see holidays as necessary spend, compared to only half of 45-54 year olds and 45% of under 45s. Ian Smith, group CEO, Page & Moy Travel Group, said “The fact that people over 50 are the highest spending and most prolific long-haul-travellers is backed up by Travelsphere’s experience. We’re the UK’s leading escorted and group travel company, specialising in enriching holidays for all older travellers, and we are also the UK’s leading long haul operator to China, and reporting increasing demand for holidays to Asia and the USA.” Ian continues, “Many of today’s older travellers have time, money and the internet at their fingertips to entice and enable. The UK’s older population is growing at the fastest rate, accounting for 17% of our population today, but is expected to rise to 23% by 2035, so

ith 45 days to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games preparations have picked up a pace, and today artistic director Danny Boyle has paid tribute to the 10,000 volunteers, cast and crew rehearsing night and day to make the Opening Ceremony a success. There have already been 157 cast rehearsals for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, with volunteer performers giving up their evenings and weekends to take part in 37 rehearsals at the new site in Barking & Dagenham where detailed preparations for both the Olympic Opening and Closing ceremonies are taking place. 3 Mills Studios remains the production base for the London 2012 Ceremonies Team where the prop store is currently looking to complete the production of 2,956 props and staff in the costume department are working hard to produce 23,000 costumes for all four ceremonies, including sewing 24,570 buttons onto the costumes for one of the opening sequences of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. In the Olympic Stadium the installation will begin shortly for

ceremonies lighting which includes 1,100 automated lamps, 1,000 conventional lamps, 500 LED fixtures, and 32 follow spots. This will be accompanied by a million watt sounds system using more than 500 speakers and 50 tonnes of associated sound gear. Work has now started to install the set for the opening scene of the Ceremony, which is called ‘Green and Pleasant’. On entry to the Olympic Stadium in East London the audience will see a scene that represents a traditional and idyllic view of the British countryside.

England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and flax from Northern Ireland. Danny Boyle, London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Artistic Director, said: ‘The Ceremony is an attempt to capture a picture of ourselves as a nation, where we have come from and where we want to be. The best part of telling that story has been working with our 10,000 volunteers. I’ve been astounded by the selfless dedication of the volunteers, they are the purest embodiment of the Olympic spirit and represent the best of who we are as a nation.’

The whole of the field of play in the Stadium will be transformed into the rolling British countryside as the London 2012 Ceremonies Team creates one of the largest sets ever built. The set will be complete with meadows, fields and rivers, and featuring families taking picnics, sport being played on the village green and farmers tilling the soil whilst real farmyard animals graze – including 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 70 sheep, and 3 sheep dogs. Frater to use Aviva Grand Prix to prepare J

l Michael Frater with his Jamaican 4x100m relay team at the IAAF Champtionships

amaican 100m sprinter and Beijing gold medallist Michael Frater is aiming to use the Aviva London Grand Prix on 13-14 July to acclimatise to the conditions he is likely face at the Olympics this summer. Frater will swap the warm climes of the Caribbean for the unpredictable British weather, as he lines up against a world-class field, just two weeks before the Games begin. Frater will be hoping to repeat the form of his last visit in 2008, when he ran a PB of 10.00. “I’m really excited about coming to Crystal Palace in July – I haven’t competed at the Aviva London Grand Prix for four years, so it’s going to be really interesting to test myself against the conditions I am likely to face if I secure selection for the Olympic Games this summer. “The London Diamond League always seems to attract a worldclass line-up, and I’m sure this year will be no different. It is two weeks before the Olympic Games and I see this as a real opportu-

nity to test myself against the best and give the crowd a real taste of what’s to come in the following few weeks. “I know that the further the season goes on, I will get better and better - I proved this when I set a personal best in Lausanne last year. I have no doubt that when the Aviva London Grand Prix comes around in July, I will be on the top of my game.” Before the Aviva London Grand Prix, Frater will be faced with the gruelling task of coming up against a formidable line-up in the Jamaican Trials at the end of this month. As the sixth fastest Jamaican in the world this year, Frater will have to be at his very best if he is to secure a spot in the 100m team. “Before London, I’ve have to make sure I’m fully prepared and at my best for the Jamaican Trials. I am under no illusions; the Trials will be one of the toughest races in my career. With [Usain] Bolt, [Asafa] Powell, [Yohan] Blake, [Nesta] Carter, [Lerone] Clarke, [Nickel] Ashmeade, [Jacques]

Harvey all in the mix for selection, I have to make sure whatever they run, I have to go even quicker.” Personal glory aside, Frater will also be looking to continue his unprecedented record in the 4x100m relay team. Following a world record winning performance in Beijing, Frater was a part of the team that won gold in the 2009 and 2011 World Championships – the latter being another world record time of 37.04. With the hunger for medal glory still burning strong in Frater, the 29 year old has set his sights on an unprecedented fourth successive medal at major championships. “I have both personal and team ambitions for the Olympics this summer. Obviously individual gold is in my thoughts, but I also have ambitions to successfully defend the relay title we [Jamaica] won four years ago in Beijing.” Back the team and watch the world’s best athletes in action at the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on 13-14 July 2012.

Windies breeze through

In recording the highest score by a number even batsman, Tino Best knock of 95 in the Third Test at Edgbaston was another major plus for a West Indies cricket team that is slowly laying the foundations for another spell at the ‘top table’ of Test cricket. His astonishing innings not only rewrote the record books, but his efforts resurrected the West Indies on a dramatic day as he and Denesh Ramdhin’s rearguard partnership denied the host any chance of a ‘white-wash’ in the 3-Test series. It was a great knock after a great evening of meeting and greeting supporters, by Tino and his teammates at the Hope’s Bar in Small Heath. For Team Manager, Richie Richardson, Edgbaston could be looked at as a watershed for cricket in the Caribbean: “We’re not the dominant force we once were but with three of the top five batsmen in the world being West Indian, we believe our time will come sooner than you think.” Best became the 13th man in the history of Test cricket to score a fifty at No 11. In fact, he had the opportunity to become the first man to score a hundred at that position.

dgbaston has won the right to host the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, with the world’s top eight One Day International teams, including England, Australia and India coming to Birmingham. Colin Povey, Chief Executive of Edgbaston Stadium, said: “Staging the final of such a prestigious tournament is not just fantastic news for Edgbaston, but for the City of Birmingham, which will host many of the world’s greatest players and their supporters during the course of the competition. The £32 million redevelopment of Edgbaston was designed to bring great tournaments and the world’s biggest cricket matches to the city, se are delighted to be chosen for the final.” Edgbaston hosted five matches in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2004, including a semi-final where England famously beat Australia by six wickets and ended their run of 14 consecutive

ODI defeats by their Ashes rivals. In 1999 the venue also staged the legendary tied World Cup semifinal between Australia and South Africa.

Proud

Sir Albert Bore, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: "It is fantastic to hear that Edgbaston Stadium will be hosting the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, underlining its status as one of the world’s premier cricket grounds. Birmingham is proud of its sporting heritage, earned because it attracts world-class events like this. Clearly, it is a major coup for the city, and I am delighted for everyone at Edgbaston.” Edgbaston’s £32 million redevelopment programme was completed last summer. This year, England will play there in all three forms of the game. Following on from the recent Investec Test Match against West Indies, there’s the NatWest Series ODI against Australia in July, then a

NatWest t20 International against South Africa in September. Chief Executive for Marketing Birmingham, Neil Rami, said: “Sport is one of the greatest means of promoting a city’s name and image across the world, so the decision to award Edgbaston Stadium with five matches of the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy, including the final, will provide invaluable global exposure for Birmingham. The redevelopment cemented Birmingham as the home of sport in this country, with the city boasting an unrivalled sporting heritage and playing host to more national, European and world sporting championships than anywhere else in the UK. We look forward to welcoming fans to a number of exciting and diverse sporting events in the region in the coming months, including Diamond League athletics and international tennis at the Edgbaston Priory Club.”

family. We thoroughly deserved it.” In addition to the trophy the Blues Ladies received £5000 from The FA prize fund for their historic win.

Look out for the ‘Last Man Standing,’ March next year. It will be the biggest of its kind, ever.
