Despite all the talk, illegal migrants are still crossing the Channel By Dr Tony Talburt A couple of years ago the previous conservative government talked about the Rwanda Plan, now, the current labour government is suggesting tackling the gangs in order to stop the boats.Despite years of talking, however, the boats keep coming. Is it time for the UK to take more drastic actions that are simple, less costly, probably unpopular, but could also act as a deterrent against the people smuggling gangs and illegal migrants themselves? Some people have suggested the need for more migrants to help curb labour shortages in some sectors.Furthermore, they contribute to the government's revenue through tax contributions. For illegal migrants, however, the situation seems different. Illegal small boat arrivals made up about a quarter of the total UK asylum applications, which increased to 99,700 people, in the 12 months to September. According to the BBC, as of 1 December, 33,684 people had crossed the Channel in small boats in 2024.Most of the current numbers of illegal migrants come from war torn and politically unstable countries. Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Vietnam, Eritrea, Iraq, Turkey and Sudan are the countries where most of the illegal migrants are coming from. UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has pledged to significantly reduce these numbers by tackling the problem at its source, which is the smuggler gangs. This, he's suggesting, would destroy their business model and simultaneously bring down the numbers of illegal crossings.
The problem, however, is not just the gangs, but the desperation of people to flee their war torn or unstable countries. Because the UK cannot solve the political issues in these countries, they are unable to effectively control the main initial push factor fuelling much of this momentum. Perhaps a tougher stance is needed to control the country's borders. What would happen if the government tried to make harder decisions about people arriving in these boats? As costly as it might sound, could the government arrange several flights a month where people arriving illegally in the UK are, following appropriate medical examinations to ensure they are fit for travel, flown back to their countries? If a significant but small percentage of people were seen to be arriving back from whence, they came, this might be a more effective deterrent than the Rwanda plan. Of course, as mentioned above, this would be costly, probably unpopular, and raise issues about international laws concerning the asylum system. Perhaps the solution is a combination of these ideas. One thing is sure, talking about a problem, without significant action or change, will not solve it.

NEWS How have SMEs dealt with regional disruptions and fared in 2024? Amid disruptions such as conflict and war, slowdown of the economy and budgetary pressures, how have businesses fared in 2024? Founderowners and directors of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK, are confident of possible incremental growth in 2025. At the beginning of the year, public estimates revealed that over five million businesses were classed as ‘small’ employing up to 49 employees. Over 30,000 businesses fell in the category of ‘medium-sized’ enterprises, with staffing levels between 50 to 249. Over 8,000 firms were perceived to be ‘large’ with over 250 employees. These figures evidenced trends of a growing commercial sector despite challenges to growth and development. In addition, the number of sole traders rose by 323,000 or 12% and firms increased by793,00 or 62% according to the Department for Business and Trade. In contrast, the number of ‘ordinary partnerships’ decreased by 100,000 or 22%. There were significant decreases in the total and unregistered businesses in construction, professional, scientific and technical activities sector respectively.Yet, government data as illustrated in Figure 1, indicated growth spurts, as the firm sector had an estimated turnover of £2.8 trillion (52%) in 2024. These statistics validated the nascent buoyancy of SMEs overall .• Small firms employed 13.0 million (47%) with a turnover of £1.8 trillion (36%). .• Medium firms employed 3.7 million (13%) with a turnover of £0.9 trillion (18%). • Large firms employed 11.1 million (40%) with a turnover of £2.5 trillion (48%).
Award-winning journalist, editor and publisher Dr Christopher Johnson writes his monthly column in The Phoenix aiming to inform, educate and entertain. The fluctuating fortunes for the UK firm sector must also be seen in the context of technological, trading and other geoalignment economic patterns. These have their genesis in public policy and the way in which these are interpreted or communicated to the business community in general. It is thought that if members of the disabled community are offered more incentives and support, they can contribute to wealth creation activities. The Lilac Review noted that ‘disabled founders’ of companies “could unlock an additional £230 billion for the UK economy”, as they currently account for approximately 25% of the UK’s 5.5 million small businesses. They contribute to only 8.6% of total small business turnover. Four fifths feel they have unequal access to opportunities and resources. The need for technical assistance and enterprise support as interventionist measures, should not be underestimated if SMEs are perceived to be the centre of economic and fiscal policy. There are other prerequisites such as: Improve public procurement systems for SMEs. Provide more micro finance training for firms with less than 20 employees. Recruit expert trainers in marketing, technology, leadership and management. Support micro to small firms struggling with Artificial Intelligence (AI) challenges. Encourage more large companies to collaborate with small firms as intermediaries. Plough additional funding in neighbourhood firms with growth potential Develop a ‘Community Network of Enterprise Alumni’ to help and support start-ups.

Bishop of Birmingham visits Gurudwara Sahib ahead of 11-day prayer service for world peace and humanity’s wellbeing On Thursday 19th December 2024, the Nishkam Team had the honour of welcoming Bishop Michael Volland for a momentous visit to the Gurudwara and the Nishkam Campus. The visit was long overdue and highlighted interfaith collaboration and mutual respect, fostering a shared commitment to peace and service in the city. The Gurudwara Sahib will be commencing its bi-annual eleven-day prayer programme for world peace and the welfare of all humanity on the 21st. December 2024. Bishop Michael was warmly received by Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh, Spiritual Leader and Chairman of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha and an esteemed global ambassador for interfaith dialogue. Their meeting was a profound exchange of ideas and aspirations, focusing on building bridges between communities and reinforcing the importance of spiritual values in contemporary society. It focused on how the two faith communities could collaborate with others in the city to build more cohesive, equitable, fairer and just places and spaces for all communities. During his visit, Bishop Michael toured the Nishkam Campus, starting with a visit to the Gurudwara Sahib and hearing about its history; the fact that 25,000 vegetarian meals a week we reserved as Langar; that the continuous prayers were ongoing for over 45 years; the fact that not a single person was paid a salary, and all service was provided by volunteers. He then visited the Nishkam Healthcare Trust (NST) to see how a community group, rooted in the community,
could provide essential, frontline services in a culturally appropriate and sensitive way, whilst curtailing pressures on the NHS. The NST team were proud to share that their service users were representative of the local demographics and not necessarily from the Punjabi or India diaspora as often perceived. The healthcare team also shared it was one of the early faith community vaccination centres during Covid and, probably the only one nationally that was entirely run by volunteers. Due to pressures of time, the Bishop was made aware of the Nishkam Community Cooperative (Marg Sat Santokh), which was set up to provide employment opportunities and was a trailblazer when first established in the mid-80’ The entourage then went to the Nishkam Primary School, where they were received by the Headteacher, Gurpreet Kaur. She explained the unique offer of a Sikh ethos, multifaith, values-based education that underpins the Nishkam Education Trust; this was clearly demonstrated, observed and commented upon by Bishop Michael during his visit. Bishop Michael stated: “The work being done here at the Nishkam Campus is truly inspiring and thank you for sharing it with us today.“It is a testament to how faith communities can lead by example in creating a world of compassion, inclusion, and service to humanity.” Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh expressed his gratitude for the visit, saying : “Today’s meeting is a reflection of the unity that is possible when we focus on what binds us together as humans,
rather than what divides us.“It is through dialogue and collaboration that we can address the challenges of our time. We see each other at the Birmingham Faith Leaders Group and other City events, but never get a chance for deep conversation or discussion, today was a great opportunity to get to know each other.”The visit concluded with a trip to the Nishkam Centre to see the Values Revolution exhibition and to visit the Community Jubilee Archway project. Bhai Sahib Ji, then presented the Bishop with a very special Peace Charter scroll that had been personally blessed by Pope Francis. Amrick Singh, Director of Nishkam Civic Engagement and Partnerships said: “It was insightful to see both leaders emphasise the importance of continuing such dialogues to inspire collective action for a better future and strengthening already existing strong bonds.“The fact that we are looking at innovative projects and tasks together, is uplifting and gives hope. One social housing project that was discussed has the potential to be the first of its kind in the country and has already attracted national interest.“I’m glad Bhai Sahib Ji shared the concept of Kar Sewa (collectively coming together to serve the Creator and the Creation on joint projects) during the discussions”. The Nishkam Centre and the Campus remains a beacon of hope and a hub for community transformation, upholding the values of selfless service, spiritual enrichment whilst tackling injustice, inequalities and empowering communities.

Life ban for man who left his dog with broken ribs and cheeks The owner of a dog who suffered rib and cheekbone fractures as a result of blunt forcetrauma has been banned from owning animals for life.Marcus Hibbert (date of birth:12/05/1994) of Farm Road, Birmingham, pleaded guilty toanimal welfare offences, following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA. Aneighbour contacted the animal welfare charity with concerns for the welfare of a dog namedBertie that they’d removed from his home after witnessing him being beaten by Hibbert. They described 11month-old Bertie as ‘struggling to stand with an eye that would not open, and bleeding from inside the ear’ when they contacted the RSPCA for help. Bertie was takento an RSPCA animal hospital where a vet observed him to be lame on back leg, withbloodshot eyes, and a bruise to his head near his ear.He was also noted to have an ear infection and a skin condition and x-rays showed cheekand rib fractures. Bertie’s blood results also showed a marked increase in Creatine kinaselevel which is consistent with significant muscle injury. When interviewed, Hibbert admitted to having caused harm to Bertie. He later pleaded guiltyto causing unnecessary suffering and failing to provide vet care to treat the injuries he’dcaused to his dog.The veterinary report stated: “In my opinion Bertie was caused to suffer as a consequence ofphysical abuse
on at least three separate occasions.“Suffering will have been experienced via mechanisms of fear, distress and pain for a periodof at least several minutes on each occasion. The x-rays indicate that Bertie had sustainedskeletal trauma resulting in bone fractures on at least three different occasions.“On each of these occasions Bertie would have experienced pain as a consequence of theacute inflammation associated with the fracture injuries which would have persisted for aperiod of at least 10 days.” In mitigation, it was said his actions were out of character and hewas remorseful for his actions.Alongside the lifetime ban for keeping animals, which Hibbert cannot appeal for ten years,he was also sentenced to 12 weeks custody, suspended for 12 months when he appearedbefore Birmingham Magistrates’ Court. He must also carry out 50 hours unpaid work and 15Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) days.Bertie was signed over to RSPCA at the time he was rescued and has since been rehomed.RSPCA Inspector Kate Levesley, who investigated for the charity, said: “Hibbert inflictedappalling and totally unnecessary violence on Bertie.“Animals deserve to be shown kindness and respect. There is never an excuse for treatingan animal in this way.”

An expert’s comment on FCA proposes targeted support reforms for pensions Following the release of the FCA’s proposals for targeted support aimed at pension savers, Lily Megson, Policy Director at My Pension Expert, reacting to the news. She said: “The FCA’s proposals are an encouraging step towards bridging the advice gap.“For too long, millions of people have been left without sufficient support when making important yet often complex retirement decisions, and this renewed focus on pensions as astarting point reflects the urgency of addressing this issue. By offering more tailored suggestions, these measures could provide much-needed clarity and support for thosestruggling to explore their retirement options.
“However, it is important that consumers understand the distinction between targeted support and full financial advice. For some, these proposals will be a valuable first step, but comprehensive advice is often critical in achieving one's long-term financial goals. “The financial services industry has an opportunity to deliver meaningful change. Collaboration between regulators, policymakers, and providers will be key to ensuring these proposals translate into accessible and effective solutions for all savers.“This is a chance to empower individuals to make informed decisions and build a secure retirement with confidence.”

University of Gloucestershire researchers have unlocked secrets buried in the earth for 6,000 years to predict how woodlands in the British Isles could be transformed due todisease and climate change. Woodlands account for 13 per cent of the total land area in the UK, providing habitat for ahuge ranges of animal species. However, outbreaks of disease and pests, as well asdroughts caused by climate change, could have a dramatic effect on their composition. With UK woodlands under increasing threat, ecologists Dr Julia Webb and Professor Anne good enough studied 6,000-yearold pollen grains that had been preserved in sediment toshed light on how a catastrophic decline in one species within the canopy – due to some treespecies being affected by disease or drought – impacts wider woodland ecology. Dr. Webband Prof. Goodenough’s research found that when a particular stressor directly affects onlyone tree species, gaps are created in the woodland canopy. The amount of light reaching the woodland floor increases and there is then a battle to see which tree species will fill each gap, with those species that are quick growing, highly competitive or already abundant locally, most likely to win. This means that change in onetree species causes woodlands to change dramatically, which impacts on the insects, amphibians, birds and mammals that are especially adapted for specific woodland types. Dr. Webb (pic), Senior Lecturer in Biology, said:
£20,000 raised for charity by Birmingham Student Utilities company “From studying pollen preserved insediment at 10 sites across the British Isles, we found that during a decline in elm nearly 6,000 years ago, there was considerable turnover in tree species as the community changed.“In many cases, different gaps in the same woodland were being filled by different species. This created a patchwork-style effect, rather than a single tree species dominating the areaand filling all the gaps.“There was a notable decline in climbing plants such as ivy and an increase in shrubs suchas holly and hawthorn, as well as heather
suggesting a more open canopy. Weed speciesthat could tolerate soil disturbance also increased rapidly.”Anne Goodenough, Professor in Applied Ecology, said: “Looking to the past to help predictfuture changes is vital.“When species such as ash are lost, we can expect shrubs, including non-native speciessuch as rhododendron, to increase, at least until gaps refill with trees. These changes willaffect many important aspects of woodland sites, including how many species they support, and whether rare species increase or are lost.“Rare plant species that need dark conditions are
especially at risk. As the woodlandrecovers with new trees filling the gaps, woodland canopies could be more varied than before, so having specific ‘ash woodlands’ and ‘beech woodlands’ and ‘oak woodlands’ could gradually become consigned to history.”

Morris, as well as all other African Caribbean Service personnel, who also served and sacrificed. A positive recognition for British Caribbean Service Personnel is yet to be installed
miles to face the dramatic change in climate and the harsh weather conditions, especially at the tender age of 16. Yet Morris found himself on the frontline in defence of Britain. The environment of regular bombing and gunfire is unimaginable, especially for those who only witnessed it from afar. There was a constant threat of being killed, and in cases with no weapons to defend themselves. They faced the horrid conditions of war, miles and miles away from family, with little or no knowledge of reprieve, and no idea when it might end and return to normality. It was truly horrendous. It was whilst facing such conditions that he (Pvt. Morris) wondered away from his post, and the second time he did so they decided to Court Marshall him for desertion. He was found guilty and sentenced to be shot at dawn.
During his trial he said - to the judge;“Sir, all I can hear is noise in my head”. He was suffering from Shell Shock - which is now recognised as ‘PTSD’ (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Private Herbert Morris was blindfolded and shot at dawn on the September 20th. 1917, by his own countrymen. He was only 17. Six of his comrades, who he likely shared many hours with as close friends and colleagues, were ordered to take aim and shoot one of their own.An unimaginable and unforgettable circumstance for all concerned. It is believed that 349 soldiers were Court Marshalled and shot during the First World War, and although the majority of them were pardoned in 2006, it leaves an indelible scar that should never be erased from the memory of humanity. Yet, apart from the Shot At Dawn Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum

Answers to the Questions - by children in Welford Primary: December 2024
By Donald Campbell.
HOW OLD WAS THE AVERAGE SOLDIER IN WORLD WAR 2? It’s believed that in WW2 the average age of a combat soldier was 26. The average age ofan RAF fighter pilot in 1940 was just 20.
WERE YOU FORCED TO GO TO WAR OR DID YOU CHOOSE TO AND IF YOU DID CHOOSE WHY DID YOU? Answer from Prince Albert Jacob (Jake) age 99, WW2 Veteran: I volunteered because Ithought it was my duty and also to give something back to the community so that we canmake it a better world. Answer from Donald Campbell: I served in Northern Ireland, age 18, and I didn’t have achoice. I was sent there directly after my trading training soon after enlisting in the RAF
WHY IS THERE A SPECIFIC TIME OF 2 MINUTES FOR REMEMBRANCE SILENCE? It seemed an ideal way to honour the dead, console the bereaved and recognise thesacrifices of servicemen and women. However, three minutes was deemed too long and onNovember 7 the plans for a two-minute silence, to mark the armistice, were officiallyannounced by King George V.
DID YOU FLY A PLANE AND IF YOU DID WHERE DID YOU FLY TO? Jake: I was not a pilot, but I flew to Camp Patrick in America in a military aircraft. Donald: I was not a pilot, but I flew in the following aircrafts mainly to do my job as an Aircraft Engineer
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT WARS AROUND THE WORLD NOW? Jake: I am surprised, education as it is, that we are still going to war. A lot of the issues/matters could be resolved without wars so that innocent people don’t suffer or lose theirlives. Donald: In life brothers and sisters’ fight, families fall out, and countries do the same witheach other man be because of greed, and unfortunately it often results in a war before it’ssorted. This has been going on for years and will probably continue. I just hope we canreduce war in the future.
WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A HERO, AND DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE ONE? Jake: To be a hero is to be extraordinary in what you do, especially if you are saving lives. Ido not consider myself a hero. Donald: To be a hero is to do things above and beyond the norm, in an extraordinary way, often putting yourself in danger. I do not consider myself to be a hero.
DID YOU HAVE ANY FLASHBACKS ABOUT WAR, AND DID THEY AFFECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH & WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU ENCOUNTERED IN WAR? Jake: Yes, I remember bombs falling but now I am no longer in that environment it does notusually affect me in anyway, only on Remembrance. Donald: I remember what used to happen in the streets of Northern Ireland when people losttheir lives by being bombed or shot at in nearby towns and cities where I was stationed. Itdoesn’t affect me now but I do think about it sometimes. My most challenging thing was being on duty guarding the Base. I was given a rifle with liveammunition to stop the enemy from entering the Base. It can be quite scary, especially if youdo not know what the enemy looks like, which was the case for me
I flew in a Hercules C130 to Madagascar, 20 hours at age 19, and to many other countries inthe world in this type of aircraft
The other aircraft I flew in are
Shackleton Aircraft, patrolling area of South Africa and dropping mail to Sailors.
Wessex Helicopter in Germany
Nimrod Aircraft to Gibraltar and Hawk Aircraft UK

Malaria vaccine rolled out in world's worst-affected country Nigeria, which has more malaria deaths than any other country in the world, has begunrolling out a vaccine against the disease for the first time. The West African nation accounts for almost a third of those who die from malaria each year. The vaccine being introduced – called R21/Matrix-M – is the second
approved by theWorld Health Organization (WHO) and is being given to children between five and 15months old Researchers say it is 75% effective but health experts recommend using it alongside othermalaria prevention tools, such as mosquito nets and insecticides. The roll-out started in twoof the worst-
affected states - Bayelsa and Kebbi – and the plan is to expand it to the rest ofthe country by next year. Happiness Idia-Wilson’s 11month-old son was the first to receive the vaccine at a ceremonyin Bayelsa. She said she was doing it "for the safety of the child, for him to be protected"."I will tell mothers,
and I will invite people [to be vaccinated]," the mother added. Bayelsa’scommissioner for health, Prof Seiyefa Brisibe, said the state would be carrying out healthcampaigns to promote the use of the vaccine in all the local languages In 2022, Nigeria accounted for 27% of global malaria cases and 31% of malaria
deaths, according to the WHO, with children under five and pregnant women being the mostvulnerable. Africa overall saw 95% of those deaths, amounting to some 580,000 people "We are confident that this vaccine, in combination with other preventive measures, willdrastically reduce the burden of malaria in Nigeria
and help us move closer to achieving thegoal of a malariafree Africa," said Dr Walter Mulombo, WHO representative in Nigeria. The government estimates that Nigeria loses $1.1bn (£870m) each year due to lostproductivity and health expenditure linked to malaria.

WOMAN REUNITED WITH SON AFTER HALF A CENTURY Paula Beer was just 17 when she fell pregnant.Afraid to tell her parents, she hid her pregnancy and travelled from her hometown ofBridgend to Essex to stay with her aunt. At seven months pregnant, she decided to give herbaby up for adoption. After giving birth in February 1967, Paula spent just three days with her little boy before hewas taken away. She recalls: "I was very young at the time, and afraid to tell my parents."It was a different time back then and the shame was dreadful. I didn't tell a soul, I kept it asecret for as long as I could."Paula decided to visit her aunt Ethel, and told her, about a month after arriving, meaning shewas eight months pregnant before she saw a doctor. "It took me a month to tell her, but shewas very supportive," she recalls. After giving birth, Paula named her baby boy Paul. "I spoke to him every day,” she said.“I thought if I keep telling him 'I loved him' everyday and he would remember my voice," shesaid."The doctors and the adoption agency handled it all so well. I wanted my baby to go to aprofessional well-off family so he could have all the advantages of life. Her baby stayed in a foster home for a few weeks, before being taken to his adoptive family."I went to the house and a lovely lady with a kind face pointed to his room,” Paula recalls,“and told me I could spend as much time
as I want in there to say goodbye. Two years later, Paula married and had a daughter, and a successful career as aprofessional home economist. But she always thought about her little baby. She then decided to contact the ITV programme, ‘Long Lost Family’, where she told herstory. "Were filming, and Davina McCall said; 'Paula, we found your son', I couldn't believe it- I cried so much, they had to stop filming," she said.Paul was now name Jim Tiltman and lived in Somerset. He found out about the search afterreceiving a letter."It said that a lady called Paula had lost contact with a long-lost relative. I was surprisedbecause I know that my name was Paul before adoption."I thought it may have been a sister, but it blew my mind when I found out my mother wastrying to contact me," he said.A few days later, Paula saw her baby for the first time in 50 years. “When I walked into theroom, he gave me a huge hug," she recalled."He then called me mum. I couldn't believe it. He called me mum - holding my hand thewhole time."Jim's adoptive family had died, and he says he never thought he’d meet his birth mother. "Ican't explain the connection I had with her when we held hands. I have a mum," he said.Paula, now 75, and Jim, 57, speak every day and have enjoyed learning about each other.
Woman tells of how she had to teach foster parents her cultural needs A woman who grew up in care said she that she had lost touch with basic things whileplaced with numerous foster families who differed from her cultural background.Nikita Cooper was nine when she went into care in Birmingham, staying with 10 differentfamilies, of which only two were Black. "A lot of foster parents didn't understand my culturalneeds like hair, skincare, certain foods that I eat... that was really hard," she said."It was more me doing the teaching about my own culture than them showing me at my age- and I found that difficult to do at nine or 10 years old." Nikita, 24, said being placed inhouseholds so different to what she was used to led to struggles with her own identity as achild.“I wanted to be other people or look a certain way because of the people I was surroundedby," she said. She was 14 when a social worker highlighted how important it was to care forafro hair properly.“When I was offered the basic hair and skin care, I then started learning and developing andgetting a better understanding of it,” she went on. Nikita works at Active Care Solutions(ACS) in Oldbury, West Midlands, an organisation that helps to match children in care withfamilies who understand their cultural backgrounds.Newlyreleased figures show the number of people choosing to foster in England is decliningfor the third year running. The 2024
Fostering in England data, external published by Ofsted, showed there were 42,615 fostering households in England, compared to 45,370 in 2021.Organisations like ACS are trying to boost the number of foster families from Black andMultiEthnic backgrounds. Social worker Mohammed Bashir said a lack of knowledge andunderstanding about fostering contributed to a shortage of families from ethnic backgrounds.“What we did is tap into the local community and hold awareness events," he said."We wanted people to have the knowledge that you are able to give something back." Fosterparent Jamil Hussain said caring for children and understanding and respecting theirbackgrounds was important and rewarding.“Children have these additional needs, especially from an ethnic minority - the food needs tobe cooked in a certain way, the meat has to be a particular type, learning how to pray," hesaid.“The family of the foster child would know that the child is in a foster home and is getting allhis needs met, and at the same time it will help the foster child as he can relate back to hisfamily." Mr Hussain said there was often a stigma attached to fostering in somecommunities, but that he wanted everyone to know how fulfilling it was.“Set aside the pressures from society and your cultural issues, just put them to one side andunderstand that there’s children out there that need you," he said.

Tourism set to surpass pre-pandemic milestones by end of 2024 The global tourism sector welcomed 1.1 billion international travellers during the first ninemonths of 2024, reaching 98% of its pre-pandemic activity, according to the World TourismBarometer by UN Tourism.Despite ongoing economic, geopolitical, and climate challenges, a full recovery from thepandemic’s devastating impact is expected by the end of the year. Four years after theCOVID-19 pandemic halted global travel, most regions have already surpassed their 2019arrival numbers between January and September 2024.Regions like the Middle East (+29%) and Africa (+6%) posted growth beyond pre-pandemiclevels, while Europe (+1%) and the Americas (-3%) closely matched 2019 figures. Asia andthe Pacific, though still recovering unevenly, achieved 85% of pre-pandemic arrivalscompared to just 66% in 2023.Among the standout performers, Qatar saw a 141% surge in arrivals compared to 2019,followed by Albania (+77%) and Saudi Arabia (+61%). Despite this strong performance, several hurdles remain.Rising travel costs, including elevated transport and accommodation prices, volatile oilmarkets, and inflation, challenge the sector. Geopolitical tensions, staff shortages, andextreme weather events further threaten the pace of recovery.Nevertheless, the sector’s resilience continues to shine, driving jobs and economic benefitsworldwide.

How an Indian teenager became the world's youngest chess champion Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju shocked the world of chess on Thursday when hebecame the youngest world champion at the age of just 18.The Chennai-born prodigy defeated defending champion, China's Ding Liren, in a dramaticmatch staged in Singapore which he had entered as the challenger. The FIDE World ChessChampionship carries a $2.5m (£1.96m) prize fund. It marked the peak to date of his career, his greatest moment in a long string of achievements.Gukesh became a grandmaster aged 12 years and seven months and even then, he wasupfront about the fact that he dreamt of being the world champion. In fact, he said he hadharboured such ambitions since he was seven when he was a spectator at a World Titlematch between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen in 2013.As he confessed at the
press conference following his dramatic win against Ding, he justdidn't think it would happen so soon. "Throughout the match I had several chances to clinchvictories and many of the games which would have put me in the front foot quite seriously,”he said following the game.“But once I was getting close, I was getting nervous and wasn’t able to finish him off. Andthen all of a sudden…there was a change, and I couldn’t process all the new information soquickly. Gukesh is the 18th world champion since Wilhelm Steinitz won what is considered the firsttitle match way back in 1886. Born in May 2006, he is also the youngest player to haveascended this pinnacle.Over the last three years the young player has made a string of extraordinary achievements, culminating in this victory. He won the individual gold medal for best performance in the lasttwo Olympiads and led India to a team
bronze at Chennai in 2022 before the gold medal in2024 in Budapest. He also won the Candidates - the tournament that earned him the right to challenge DingLiren. Earlier in his teens, Gukesh was ruled out as a prospective challenger by his mentor, the former world champion Viswanathan Anand, who thought that Gukesh simply didn't haveenough experience The Chennai GM is at the apex of a robust chess ecosystem, which is one of the best, perhaps the best, in the world, whilst India has over 85 grandmasters, many of whom are notyet of driving age. Sponsored by Westbridge Capital, which supports the Westbridge AnandChess Academy, Gukesh has been a professional player since he was around 10 years oldand is now mentored by five-time world champion, Viswanathan Anand. His aim is to overcome the current number one, Magnus Carlsen, and become theundisputed best chess player in the world.

Australian breaker Rachael Gunn has announced she will retire from competition, citing theviral response to her performance at the Paris Olympics.Gunn - who is known as Bgirl Raygun - failed to get on the scoreboard in all three of hercompetition rounds in August, with a routine that included unorthodox moves, such as thesprinkler and a kangaroo hop. The 37-year-old university lecturer's moves catapulted her toglobal attention and ridicule, spawned conspiracy theories about her qualification, andreignited criticism of breaking's inclusion in the Olympics.Gunn had initially planned to keep competing but said the saga had been too upsetting forher – and she changed her mind. "I just didn’t have any control over how people saw me orwho I was," she told her local radio station."I was going to keep competing, for sure, but that seems really difficult for me to do now. Ithink the level of scrutiny that’s going to be there, and people will be filming it, and it will goonline."Gunn received a torrent of violent messages after the Olympics and was the subject of ananonymous petition demanding she apologise. It falsely accused her and her husband ofmanipulating her selection at the expense of other Australian talent. She was vigorously defended by Olympic officials, but her performance split opinion withinthe breaking community, with some saying she made a mockery of the sport. It also revivedquestions over whether breaking - which debuted in Paris but is not on the programme forthe 2028 Games in Los Angeles - should have ever been included in the Olympics, due tothe creative nature of the genre, which doesn't necessarily suit organised competition.Gunn has previously said the backlash took the joy out of the sport. "Dancing is so muchfun, and it makes you feel good,” she said.“I don’t think people should feel crap about the way that they dance. I still dance, and I stillbreak.“But, you know, that’s like in my living room with my partner!"
