Acorns launches urgent appeal in stores switch

A

corns Children's Hospice has launched an urgent ‘Bring a bag to Acorns’ stores’ appeal, to support a major change in how it collects stock. The charity’s retail team has stopped door-to-door collections, responding to concerns about the numbers of charity bags being pushed through people’s letterboxes and issues with bags being stolen. People who still receive bags marked ‘Acorns’ are asked to immediately contact Acorns’ retail team on 01564 825027. Managers are instead urging people to bring donations of stock directly to any of its 54 stores across the West Midlands, and to organise group collections at schools and work. Acorns depends heavily on the goodwill of local people to provide funding to continue its vital care services, which cost £750 per child per day. It previously collected 2,000 bags of stock each week from doorstep donations around local neighbourhoods; so the change of policy means donations to stores are even more important. Janice McPherson, Acorns’ Head of Retail, said shortage of stock

West Midlanders are the most stressed-out shoppers

A

s shoppers hit the High Street to bag the perfect gifts for their loved ones, Quidco – the UK’s biggest cashback site – revealed that stress levels were sky-high in the West Midlands, with 66% of residents bickering with their better half when out buying together. Quidco’s survey showed that 55% of West Midlanders resort to shopping solo in a bid to avoid rows on the High Street. 60% also admit that shopping became all the more stressful in the lead up to

Christmas, with 47% resorting to online shopping in order to dodge a domestic in-store. Tempers in the region become so frayed that 61% of locals admit to rowing with their partner about what to buy between once and five times per month. The big blame is couples wanting to get the best value for money on a purchase and taking too long to decide. What’s more, it seems certain items provoke more arguments than others. Food, clothes and holidays get shoppers most worked

up. Andy Oldham, Managing Director at Quidco, said: “It can be difficult to agree with your partner on everything, especially when you are planning to spend a lot of money on something for your home that you are both going to share.” Quidco is the UK’s biggest cashback site that pays people when they make a purchase from over 3,400 retailers listed on its website. The website also launched the first integrated comparison and cashback tool in car insurance to the marketplace.

meant the hospice was eager for people to pop into stores with donations, to help generate funds to look after the 640 plus life limited and life threatened local children the hospices currently cares for. Acorns’ families receive care free of charge, but as most funds must be raised from the local community, it is vital that people help to continue the essential support. Stores’ income is invaluable in continuing this support, and 10 – 12,000 bags of donations a week are required to maintain sufficient stocks. Acorns can help people to hold “Bring a Bag” events, by providing posters, donation sacks and even collecting the bags. Acorns’ staff can visit your group to explain how the scheme works, what happens to donations and what your contribution will mean to care and support services. Just 60 bags of good stock or 90 bags of rag (torn, worn or soiled textiles or shoes with no heels, bags with no handles or belts without buckles etc.) can cover the cost of caring for a child for one day.

Number of child arrests on the fall

A

ccording to the Howard League for Penal Reform, West Midlands Police arrested 10,487 children in 2011, an average of 201 boys and girls aged 17 and under a week, figures which represent a fall of 55 per cent since 2008. “The fact that the number of child arrests across England and Wales has fallen by a third since 2008 is a testament to a change of culture, more focused on public safety than targets,” said Howard League Chief Executive, Frances Crook. 209,000 arrests of boys and girls aged 17 and under last year included 2,117 arrests of children who were aged 10 or 11, meaning that on average six primary school children were arrested every day.

“Children who get into trouble are more often than not just being challenging teenagers and how we respond to this nuisance behaviour could make a difference for the rest of their lives. An arrest can blight a life and lead to a criminal record for just being naughty. The positive change in policing children will release resources to deal with real crimes,” he continued. West Midlands Police is arresting fewer children than it has in the past. Only a handful is involved in more serious incidents and they usually suffer from neglect, abuse or mental health issues. The Howard League is commitment to public safety meaning they are treated as vulnerable children and making sure they get the help they desperately need.

magine if some of our treasured landmarks in the Midlands were 'sold' in a global rush of land? The Midlands is the birthplace to historical figures such as Robin Hood and William Shakespeare and there are iconic sites that millions of people visit every year from Sherwood Forest in Nottingham to Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire. National iconic landmarks such as the White Cliffs of Dover, the Angel of the North, Glastonbury Tor and Brighton beach were "sold" alongside local landmarks

such as the Wrekin in Shropshire and the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire as Oxfam brings the need to tackle land grabs in developing countries to the UK. Last month Oxfam in the Midlands erected “Sold” signs across the whole of the Midlands in an effort to bring their campaign to stop land grabs to the attention of locals. Land grabs leave poor people in Africa, Asia and Latin America homeless and without access to the land they rely on for food to eat and to make a living. Every second, an area of land the size of a football pitch in these countries is being sold to foreign investors due to the recent rush for land. Few of these deals have been adequately regulated or policed to prevent land grabs, meaning poor people are being evicted, often violently, without consultation or compensation.

Oxfam is pressing the government to ensure land grabs are addressed at the next G8 summit, which Britain is hosting in June next year and also to push the World Bank to temporarily freeze its agricultural investments in

*

land. This would give the World Bank time to review its own advice to developing countries, help set standards for investors and introduce more robust policies to help stop land grabs.

Thought your kids were fast? Meet The Fastest Present Unwrapper In Europe

I

n the first ever Unwrapping Championships held in London yesterday (12 December), Alberto Costa Leo from Spain won the title of Fastest Present Unwrapper in Europe. The winners of heats run across Europe were challenged by TomTom to unwrap eight gifts in the fastest possible time. Alberto clocked in at 1.01 minutes, just pipping the Belgian contestant at 1.02 minutes. Portugal took third and fourth places, with Holland coming in

fifth. The UK contestants were eliminated in the first round. The winner will have his Christmas gifts paid for courtesy of TomTom. The event came ahead of what is

likely to be the busiest wrapping weekend of the year. A survey by the sat nav firm found that one in three women will be wrapping 20 or more gifts this Christmas - yet one in four men will be wrapping

five or fewer. Six in ten men will take just 60 seconds to wrap their presents, whereas women will make more of an effort – taking three minutes or more per present. TomTom is also giving everyone the chance to unwrap and win this season. People can play “unwrap the world” to win one of six unforgettable driving adventures at www.tomtom. com/more. “I don’t match the sofa” life, not just for Christmas’ and sadly it’s as true today as when it was first coined. We see a number of dogs handed into our rehoming centres in the days and weeks following Christmas when the appeal of a cute puppy has worn off. It seems that people are still giving puppies as Christmas presents without considering the long term ramifications. Dogs can provide a world of happiness and enjoyment, and we urge anyone considering a new addition to the family to think it through properly and remember that the only place a puppy should be is on the outside of the wrapping paper, not inside it.” To help prevent people giving dogs as a Christmas present Dogs Trust centres do not rehome dogs between 22nd – 29th December (22nd December – 2nd January in Glasgow and West Calder). Potential owners can visit and reserve a dog, but will not be able to take it home until after the festivities. As well as caring for the abandoned dogs over the Christmas period over 365 Dogs Trust staff will continue their jobs caring for the 1,600 dogs in their care. e all know ‘A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas’, but it seems that many existing dog owners are finding the most bizarre reasons to dump their dogs. From not matching the sofa, to wanting to exchange it for a smaller one, sadly Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, reveals that dogs of all shapes and sizes are being handed in apparently just for being dogs. Over the last 12 months, Dogs Trust has cared for over 16,000 dogs and many have been handed in to the charity’s network of 18 rehoming centres in the UK for a wealth of reasons from the ludicrous to the downright strange. Shockingly, someone gave their dog up because he did not look like the one online, a chilling reminder that dogs and pets are increasingly being purchased and sold online with very little thought. With Christmas fast approaching, the charity is now bracing itself for the influx of unwanted ‘presents’ that will also be handed into the already overflowing rehoming centres. embers of UKSPA (United Kingdom Science Park Association) have elected Dr David Hardman MBE, CEO of Birmingham Science Park to be its new Chair in succession to outgoing Chair, the Director of Surrey Research Park, Dr Malcolm Parry OBE. Dr Hardman, who joined Birmingham Science Park in 2008, has been instrumental in spearheading a renaissance of the 14 acre, 250,000 sq ft Park, which facilitates the management of innovative, high-growth, knowledgebased organisations. Founded in 1984 and recognised as the authoritative body for the planning, development and crea-

tion of Science Parks throughout the UK, UKSPA has grown significantly over the years with a strong regional, and local focus to their establishment and associated management structures to help drive technology up the value chain. He said: “I believe that UK science parks and innovation centres have a crucial role to play in promoting the Knowledge Economies. They create a focal point for the aggregation of all the necessary components required to nurture tech entrepreneurs and startups, alongside growing and more mature tech businesses.” Paul Wright, Chief Executive of UKSPA said: "David brings a wealth of experience to the role of UKSPA Chairman and will be

leading a strong board at a pivotal moment for the Association. Working with our Vice-Chair Catherine Johns and the other board members, he will bring energy and experience as UKSPA looks forward to celebrating 30 years of support for Science Parks and other innovation centres.” Dr Hardman’s ‘Science Park Without Walls’ initiative has been acknowledged as a fundamentally new approach to how science park’s operate - and in particular support start-up businesses. Local entrepreneurs are connected with investors and knowledge from across the globe, irrespective of geographies, so promoting ‘borderless innovation’.

CSR. CSR? CSR! What’s this three-letter chill blowing into my iPhone as we head into winter 13? Perhaps it’s a summons from the Centre for Software Responsibility; did they finally detect my unlicensed copy of Microsoft Word 2005? Is it a plea from Cotteridge Student Radio for me to help them out, so that trendsetters from across south Birmingham can tune in? Do they mean Comprehensive Spending Review, which is coming to bonfire our benefits and carve up the public sector like a Halloween pumpkin? Or could it be Corporate Social Responsibility; the kindly bestowal of cash by the wise and the well connected? We hear that this will replace or support our state arts and creative funding

sometime immediately. But I’m a little unclear on the practical cash-flow operation running beneath this Big Society concept because it’s certainly not a policy, more of a conversation amongst Eton College graduates in the 70’s drinking JD. Even with all the graft, grime and grit in our grants system as it was, at least most funders made decisions aimed at backing reasonably worthy people or projects. And at broadening the taste of the nation as we brits like to. music, performance, art, heritage and digital endeavour. And cold cash can’t be red-pencilled out. Birmingham is still, for example, the UK’s second largest media production centre; with 17,000 people on the payroll across 1,000 businesses. Whatever the temperature, there’s always business to be done; and Birmingham’s creative entrepreneurs will be doing it, whatever the results of the emergency budget cutbacks. So as taxi man in Cape Town said to me last week, you need to “make a plan and make it happen”!

No; instead, what I hope is this: that it’s Creative Society Rules. Because our local creative economy is still bright, booming and optimistic, even as we head into a chilly winter at the end of a lean, lean year. Because I’ve heard whispers of the projected figures, and I know that we’re still continuing to pull real, honest, hard-earned cash into the West Midlands economy through

he Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in Shropshire is celebrating the news that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has agreed to renew his Patronage of the Museum for a further period. His Royal Highness became Patron of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in 1979 following a visit to the world-famous Gorge. Since then, The Prince of Wales has visited the Ironbridge Gorge Museum many times, most recently in September 2012 when he unveiled the Museum’s newly conserved Boy & Swan Fountain.

His Royal Highness’ Patronage will extend from 2012 to 2017, the year that the Museum will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee. The Trust, known for its ground-

breaking education and conservation work in the Ironbridge Gorge, welcomes around 70,000 school visits each year and supports other museums and arts organisations with their own volunteer programmes. Having completed a major £12m redevelopment of

Blists Hill Victorian Town in 2009, the Trust is currently fundraising for the redevelopment of the Museum of Iron at Coalbrookdale, the first site visited by His Royal Highness in 1979 and the museum at the heart of the World Heritage Site. Mike Lowe, President of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted that His Royal Highness has agreed to extend his Patronage for the Trust. The support of the Prince of Wales as our Patron over so many years means a great deal to all those associated with the Trust, including our many wonderful and hard-working volunteers”.

irmingham Science Park Aston-based Droplet’s city-wide trial of its mobile money app that digitises cash has already attracted over 1,000 users and hailed by TechCrunch’s influential European Editor Mike Butcher on Twitter as ‘one of the most exciting start-ups of the year’, significant numbers of new users and merchants across Birmingham are required to ensure rapid scalability. The app is available on iOS and lets you load money onto their iPhones and send payments to anyone for free. Registered users can top-up their Droplet account whilst on the move, and keep complete track of day-to-day expenditure. Steffan Aquarone, co-founder of Droplet said: “We’ve put all of our eggs in one basket by focusing on a concentrated trial - limited to Birmingham – and because Droplet is completely fee-free, merchants have been more than

happy to promote the app to their customers. Many independent retailers stipulate a £5 minimum spend for credit card and debit card transactions but with Droplet there is no minimum spend. A transaction is much quicker to process than paying with a card, or even cash. The city is rapidly adopting it as its first choice payment method, because using Droplet on your mobile is a simple pleasure; it digitises cash.” Dr David Hardman MBE, CEO of Birmingham Science Park said: “To have Europe’s most influential tech editor hail Droplet as ‘one of the most exciting start-ups of the year’ is tremendous recognition, as well as the rapidly expanding tech community here at Birmingham Science Park. Based in the Entrepreneurs for the Future Centre (e4f), Droplet provides an excellent

exemplar of what the tech entrepreneurs here in Birmingham are creating; new businesses and jobs for local people, based on highly innovative concepts. Droplet also demonstrates how tech can support and enhance Birmingham’s wider business community.” Droplet’s other founders include technology entrepreneur and innovation consultant Will Grant, mobile product specialist Andy Smart and experienced business operations director David Roberts.

ADVERTORIAL

Achievements at BAES in 2012 2 012 has been a great year for achievement – and not just at the London Olympics. Within the Birmingham Adult Education Service we have been celebrating successes too!

This year, more learners achieved their qualifications in subjects ranging from English, Maths and IT to Care, Childcare and Business Administration. One third of our learners reported that the course they followed had helped them to get a job or to improve their employment prospects.

We held our annual Learner Awards ceremony in November. Award winners, nominees and tutors attended an uplifting evening where Sue Knottenbelt, the Head of BAES, presented awards to celebrate their learning achievements. Learners shared the stories of their remarkable learning journeys.

Many of our learners have since gone on to find employment or have continued learning with a new found confidence and determination. This was a truly inspirational event, and a reminder for all who attended how learning can transform lives.

One of the other great successes was for some Floristry learners, they had the opportunity for their fabulous arrangements to be used in the restaurant of Birmingham’s Michelin starred chef, Glyn Purnell. He was delighted to be able to give our learners the chance to showcase their work in a professional environment – and the displays they created were magnificent. We at BAES are now looking forward to 2013, and we hope you’ll be able to join us. See below for details of how to find out more about our courses!

lar circumstances. The process involved in having your child (or children) come to settle with you in the UK can be a heart-breaking and tedious one. It means, therefore, that you have to be prepared to produce the documents that will be required to show that you (and your child) meet the criteria for the child to come and live with you in the UK. There are slightly different rules for (1) British citizens and persons with ILR from (2) EEA National families living in the UK. Although we will mainly review the law relating to British Nationals and persons with ILR, if you are in an EEA family unit, then you have a lower threshold to satisfy to have your child come to live with you in the UK. You will only need to show that (1) you are the parent/step-parent of the child, (2) you are an EEA national living in the UK and (3) the child is under 21. If you are a British National, or if you have ILR, and wish to have your non-EEA child join you in the UK, there are

http://www.facebook.com/immigrationuk

stringent requirements for you and your child to meet. You must show that (1) you (the parent) are a British Citizen, or Non-EEA national with Indefinite Leave to Remain; (2) you have accommodation and enough funds to care for the child when the child arrives in the UK (3) the child is under 18 (if a child is over 18 he/she has to apply in their own right and a child application cannot be made) (4) both parents are living in the UK OR one parent is living in the UK and that UK parent has ‘sole responsibility’ for the child. Generally, persons are able to meet the criteria for the first three requirements and if both parents are in the UK the fourth is also satisfied and an application will not be too difficult to make. However, most cases fall within the category of there being one parent in the UK and it is that parent who is seeking to have the child join him/her in the UK. As such, the biggest obstacle you will face as the UK parent making a visa application, is to show the immigration officer dealing with your child’s visa application, that you are the parent with ‘sole responsibility’ for that child. Regarding meeting the ‘sole responsibility’ requirement, the UK parent must show that he/

About Jennifer

J

ennifer Housen is a barrister-at-law qualified to practice in England & Wales. Additionally, she is an attorney-at-law qualified to practice in the USA in the state of New York, and also qualified to practice in the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Jennifer was born in Jamaica and moved to Britain as a teenager. Jennifer gained experience in immigration law having been an oversight Director of Programmes on the Immigration & Asylum Accreditation Scheme when the UK government sought to set an assessment framework all for immigration lawyers and advisors. Building on her academic experience in the area, Jennifer’s immigration practice has helped thousands of applicants with their immigration matters including entry clearance, visitor applications, deportations, removals and leave to remain. She has particular associations with the Caribbean community and has a dedicated immigration office, Immigration UK Limited, in the Jamaican capital of Kingston, which has assisted her many clients over the last few years. She has appeared as a guest adviser on immigration law on several radio and television programmes in Jamaica and the UK. With an expanding immigration practice, and conscious of the needs of her clients in the UK who she had assisted with their entry clearance visas, Jennifer opened The Immigration UK Partnership in July 2011, together with Kemesha Lynch, an experienced immigration solicitor. The Immigration UK Partnership has worked intimately with its clients in their immigration matters including detention, indefinite leave to remain, discretionary leave to remain and deportation matters. The firm continues to go from strength to strength as it takes a personal and sensitive approach to its clients and their needs. The firm further supports its clients and the community by delivering free immigration seminars at various locations/ times throughout the year. The Immigration UK Partnership’s office is in Brixton, London, however Jennifer is able to see clients in Birmingham by appointment. Questions can be asked through the firm’s Facebook page, but responses are limited as individual circumstances differ and may require an appointment.

EDUCATION

As a qualified barrister-at-law in England and Wales and also an attorney-at-law in the US and Jamaica, Jennifer is on top of her game and is highly respected in her field of practice. Jennifer has previously headed the Special Programmes Division of Central Law Training (CLT) in Birmingham before returning to Jamaica to start Caribbean Legal Practice Institute in 2005. The Institute currently offers the University of London tutorial programme either on a full time or part-time basis including morning, evening and weekend sessions. The institute which started with about six students now has over 1000 alumni students.

She recognises the issues that a lot of LLB students face struggling with understanding their lecturers. “Of course, Law students are required to read but at the same time they also want clarity, which is why one of the reasons for running these sessions is to give clarity” “The Law session is something a little bit more intimate whereby law students will feel as if I am speaking to them. They will also be able to write assignment for me to review.” Students will be able to login into the system and learn at their own pace, making learning very flexible. She conveyed that using a visual

l Dave Brooks, Bromak Managing Director idlands-based recruitment and training consultancy Bromak is targeting growth of 30 per cent over the next 12-months after gaining a key industry training accreditation. The consultancy, which is on course to achieve between £11m-£12m in sales for 2012/13, has been awarded approved training provider status from CITB Construction Skills which means it can deliver a raft of health and safety training courses to clients and candidates. The Lichfield-based firm, which works with major UK contractors, shop fitters, local authorities and housing associations, is the only recruitment consultancy in its sector accredited to deliver Construction Skills training. Clients include ISG, Keepmoat Group and Wates. Dave Brooks, Bromak Managing Director said: “We’ve been

very encouraged by the number of training course bookings, in some cases with quite sizable firms. We’ve seen many examples of how offering training as part of our recruitment service can save our clients time and money. That we are now able to deliver the full suite of Construction Skills safety training courses only makes us stronger.” Specialising in placing temporary and permanent trades & labour, customer care, office and site management staff, Bromak also has recruitment offices and training facilities in Bolton, Liverpool and Yorkshire. It’s official - Lambeth schools among country’s best

C

hildren in Lambeth are more likely to attend a good or outstanding primary school than pupils in most other parts of the country, according to a report released by Ofsted. 84 per cent of Lambeth children attend a primary school that is rated either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ according to Ofsted, putting Lambeth eighth equal for local authority areas out of 150 LAs nationwide. Lambeth’s percentage compares with a figure of just 42 per cent in the lowest performing area of the country. The results have been revealed in the new report of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education,

Children’s Services and Skills. Cllr Rachel Heywood, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People on Lambeth Council, said: “This is fantastic recognition for the quality of our primary schools and shows that if you live in Lambeth, your child is more likely to go to a good or outstanding school than virtually anywhere else. We all want our children to get the best possible opportunities and best start in life, and this proves that Lambeth’s primary schools are among the best anywhere. “We are not complacent and we will continue to lobby the government to pro-

vide more school places for children in Lambeth. But these results are testament to the fantastic headteachers, governors and teaching

staff we have at Lambeth’s schools and the excellent relationship between our schools, community and the local authority.”

Aston University Student wins The National Student Challenge

T

l Winner - Katharina Gammel

he National Student Challenge, in partnership with Siemens and organised by TARGETjobs Events, took place at the incredible Crystal Building in London on 10 December. The winner was Katharina Gammel, the first female winner, who is studying Management at Aston University. The runners up were James Hoyes (Law, University of Sheffield) and Liam Bryant (Civil Engineering, University of Bath). Katharina wins a cheque

for £1,000 and a paid internship with Siemens. Records were broken with over 4,000 students registered for the Challenge from 118 different universities. They came from every degree subject although the highest number were studying economics, management, maths and law. They all took a lengthy online intelligence test designed by testing experts Cut-e and the 60 with the highest scores were invited to the final stage. They took part in a variety of practical tests which included individual and group exercises devised by Cut-e and the sponsoring organisations to test their decision making, communication and business awareness. The exercises were based on the challenges they will face at assessment centres in their final year and everyone, not just the winners, gained valuable practice.

The National Student Challenge is open to all with no targeting or pre-selection based on university or UCAS points. Of the final 60 who scored the best in the online test, there were students from Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent and Edge Hill competing alongside students from Oxbridge, Imperial and Durham. The winner was the student who could best show that he/she had the personal skills to match their intelligence. In these days of targeting, the National Student Challenge is most definitely a level playing field and it shows that talent exists in universities outside the Russell Group. The National Student Challenge was organised in partnership with Siemens and is sponsored by Grant Thornton, National Grid, Telefonica and Toyota. The presence and support of top employers shows how important it is for UK business-

es to identify the talented leaders of the future. Jennifer Whitehouse, Talent Acquisition Partner at Siemens says, “We wanted to partner with the National Student Challenge as it’s a great opportunity to engage with students from across the UK, whilst allowing them to develop their employability skills. We are particularly proud to be associated with a competition that is open to all undergraduates, regardless of where or what they study. Siemens are offering Katharina an internship in addition to the cash prize as we feel that gaining industry experience will be of lasting benefit to her."

he sixth annual National Apprenticeship Week will take place from 11-15 March and it looks set to be the biggest and best yet. National Apprenticeship Service is calling on West Midlands businesses and their support organisations, apprentices, schools, colleges and training providers to get involved. Designed to celebrate Apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the economy, it will focus on the many high quality opportunities open to apprentices and the value which Apprenticeships bring both to young people and businesses. With almost a thousand events expected to take place, the Week will celebrate the talent, achievements and successes of apprentices across England with it increasing in popularity every year. This year, supporters are being encouraged to organise events and activity around the theme “Ap-

prenticeships Deliver” – showcasing the benefits high quality Apprenticeships deliver for both apprentices and their employers. Karen Woodward Divisional Area Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said: “We hope that this year’s National Apprenticeship Week will be the biggest yet, showcasing the excellent work delivered by apprentices in businesses and organisations around the country and the first rate training they receive Apprenticeships help young people develop high quality, highly sought-after skills, improving their prospects while boosting an organisation’s bottom line. And currently employers with less than 1,000 employees can also benefit from a £1,500 Apprenticeship Grant.” A toolkit to help organisations plan their own events is available on the apprenticeships.org. uk website. A national calendar of events will also be available on the website too.

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, said although knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases as a whole has improved over the years, awareness of HPV still falls woefully short. He said: “In the next decade, we are likely to see HPV rival smoking as the leading cause of mouth cancer. Unfortunately, our knowledge of this virus is extremely poor.

Cases of mouth cancer have doubled in the last 30 years, coinciding with the rise of HPV. By improving standards of sexual health education, young people are more likely to start their sexual relationships safely and continue the practice later in to life.” In the UK, around one in five mouth cancer cases are predicted to be as a result of the HPV infection. “As the majority of HPV cases are seen in younger people, there has been a dramatic fall in the age of the average mouth cancer sufferer,” Dr Carter added. According to the latest figures 6,236 are diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK every year. Over two-thirds of cases diagnosed at a late stage, the chance of survival is reduced from 90 per cent to 50 per cent.

Birmingham and Sheffield are making the greatest effort to stop smoking, with electronic cigarettes proving popular, and across the UK more women than men trying to give up. According to the analysis by DiscountVouchers.co.uk, Northern Ireland and Wales are the least concerned about their appearance, spending the smallest amount on health and beauty products. The biggest spenders are in East Anglia, with teeth whitening and corsets topping the list of popular purchases. "There is huge demand for money-saving deals on health and beauty items, which just goes to show how savvy consumers have become. Mums encouraged to having whooping cough vaccine

P

regnant women in are being urged to take up the offer of a whooping cough vaccination after a sharp increase in the number of cases across the West Midlands. A new vaccination programme was recently launched to boost the immunity passed on by pregnant women to protect their newborn babies. That came as figures for the first nine months of 2012 showed

435 confirmed cases of whooping cough in the West Midlands compared to just 33 in 2011 – and just 10 in 2010. Nationally cases are higher than at any point in the last twenty years and the Health Protection Agency figures show 13 babies have died from the disease in the first 10 months of the year. Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Steve Bedser, said: “Whooping cough is a highly con-

tagious disease and infants are particularly vulnerable. It’s vital that babies are protected from the day they are born – so we strongly recommend all pregnant women take up the offer of vaccination. Parents must ensure their children are vaccinated against whooping cough, even babies of women who’ve had the vaccine in pregnancy.” Dr Adrian Phillips, Director of Public Health for Birmingham added: “Vaccination is vital but also parents should be alert to the signs and symptoms of whooping cough. The condition usually begins with a persistent dry and irritating cough that progresses to intense bouts of coughing. This is followed by a distinctive ‘whooping’ noise, which is how the condition gets its name.” The vaccine is now offered to women who are between 28 and 38 weeks pregnant. Expectant mums will be offered vaccination via their GP practice with all pregnant women – even women who have previously been immunised against whooping cough – encouraged to be vaccinated again to boost their immunity levels.

So much for the bad news; the good news is that, in Charlie's own words “I ain't dead yet”; in fact, he is now playing and singing better than ever. “I was feeling so good about the album that when the doctor told me I had only months to live I just laughed and said ‘No mate, that's not gonna happen. Charlie’s tumour has now been reduced by fifty per cent, thanks to dedicated diets and supplements for cancer, plus several courses of intravenous doses of high intensity vitamin C. Iron Man 3 Tony Stark/Iron Man finds his world reduced to rubble by a malevolent enemy and must use his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him as he seeks to destroy the enemy and his cohorts. Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, re-

lying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question

is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands. Based on the Graphic Novel Original Concept by director Joesph Kosinski.

H

ollywood stars Megan Fox, Ed Helms, and Jessica Alba announced the nominations for the 2013 Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the event, is famous for nominating films and performances simply based on their star factor — if there’s an actor

that members of the HFPA want to hang out with, they’re sure to get a nomination. But the HFPA is great at putting on a show, and so the Golden Globes generate a lot of attention every year. And, it has been noted, with the Globes nominations coming just days before Oscar nomination voting starts, there’s a possibility that nominations here could affect Oscar voting.

The Best Picture nomination set includes what is already becoming a standard set of awards favorites, such as Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty. BIG SCREEN

Seven Psychopaths (15)**

Starring Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson Written and Directed by Martin McDonagh

A

fter the cult success of ‘In Bruges’, a patchy but often hilarious account of hit-men on a gruesome holiday in Belgium, Martin McDonagh’s second film as writer-director arrives as one of the year’s most eagerly awaited films. Of the many screenwriters who have followed in the footsteps of Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece Pulp Fiction and Charlie Kaufman’s joyously quirky ventures into surrealism (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation), McDonagh has showed the most promise. I found it such a shame that his second film has only flashes of brilliance. Too much is so clever-clever that it borders on foolishness. The anti-hero, played by Colin Farrell is a drunken Hollywood screenwriter trying to turn out a script entitled Seven Psychopaths, about a serial killer in search of personal redemption and world peace. But the writer is having problems avoiding Tarantino-type cliches, so a helpful actor (Sam Rockwell) introduces him to real underworld figures, including a sad-sack petty criminal (Christopher Walken) who specialises in kidnapping dogs and selling them back to their grateful owners. From there, the writer gets a glimpse of a real killer when Walken’s dognapper unwisely steals a Shih Tzu belonging to

a dangerously unhinged gangster (Woody Harrelson). Then he meets even more psychotics like the one played not very subtly by Tom Waits, who chops his victims up with a meat cleaver and allows his pet rabbit to drink their blood. And then sets them on fire. OK. Farrell and Walken squeeze a few laughs out of the picture. Walken is livelier than he has been of late, and the pretty-boy looks of his youth have morphed into an endearingly sour-faced disappointment at being punched repeatedly in the face by life. Farrell has a fine comedy face, too, especially when emerging baffled from an alcoholic stupor with eyebrows roaming his forehead like deranged black caterpillars. The let-down is that director McDonagh revels in the very things

he is trying to satirise: a flippant attitude to violence, movies with nothing to say about killing, the tendency of Hollywood writers to disappear up their own fundament. And the women on display – portrayed by some fine actresses including Abbie Cornish and Gabourey Sidibe from Precious – are so poorly written that they feel like a calculated insult to half the human race. The choices McDonagh makes are meant to be anarchic and innovative, but instead they feel arbitrary, unreal and lazy, without a controlling idea. People who like to see a lot of macho strutting may be less annoyed than I was. For the first half hour, Seven Psychopaths looks like fun – but then it turns into the kind of bore that loves to party but seriously outstays his welcome.

FEATURE - PHOENIX CHRISTMAS AND 2ND BIRTHDAY

Merry Christmas and Birthday Celebrations for The Phoenix Newspaper

I

t was the middle of December, and as people around the country were winding down and getting ready to celebrate Christmas the Phoenix office was no exception, except for the small fact that it was not only Christmas for us, but it was our Birthday too! To celebrate, we revisited The Marriott Hotel in Birmingham on the 14th December. We had featured the Marriott Birmingham earlier in the year, and after impress-

ing us back then, it was decided to host our Christmas/ Birthday party there this year. The brilliant service did not fail to impress, and the food was stunning. From soup or smoked salmon with

prawns to a full roast turkey dinner or sea bass, every dish was presented beautifully and tasted every bit as good as it looked.

The night was rounded off with a DJ and dancing. A lot

of fun was had by all involved, and everyone is now looking forward to 2013 and reaching 3 years of publishing The Phoenix Newspaper.

o my darling husband, Before you return from your business trip, I just want to let you know about the small accident I had with the pick up truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately it's not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me. I was

coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but fortunately the pick up came to a halt when it bumped into your car. I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know

how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart. I am enclosing a picture of the damage for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again. Your loving wife. XXX P.S. Your girlfriend called.

Standing a little taller, and a little rounder than its sibling, the Twist feels a bit more robust and a decent handful now. Shipping with the same Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that the Cisor has, the Twist still boasts the 4 hour playback via Bluetooth and 9 via cable. o you play a little more “Call of Duty: Black Ops II” than you’d care to admit? Got a ridiculously powerful GPU? When you’re not defending your nation from bad guys, maybe you’ll want to donate a little of that computing power to help advance the fight against AIDS. Using GPUGrid.net – a volunteer distributed-computing effort that uses spare time on the GPUs of thousands of volunteers – Spanish researchers have made an important breakthrough in the quest to better understand HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Bioinformaticians at IMIM (Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute) and UPF (Pompeu

It turns out, the HIV protease acts like a pair of scissors. These “scissors proteins,” cuts the long chain of connected proteins that form HIV into individual proteins. These individual proteins, or virons, then take viral genomes from one cell to another. Using GPU-accelerated software called ACEMD, researchers showed how the first HIV “scissors proteins” can cut themselves out from within the middle of these poly-protein chains, beginning the infectious phase of HIV. By providing this new visibility into how the HIV protease behaves, bio-tech researchers can potentially design new antiretroviral drugs to halt the HIV maturation process to stop it from becoming infectious.

From Blasting Aliens to Battling HIV

Fabra University) in Barcelona said today that, for the first time, they have simulated the behavior of the initial crucial step in the HIV maturation process. Modeling How HIV Matures The action of a protein called ‘HIV protease’ is responsible for the initial step of the whole HIV virus maturation process, which enables the virus to become infectious.

The Barcelona researchers achieved this breakthrough by harnessing the power of thousands of NVIDIA GPU accelerators on a network of individual computers—not unlike one of the highend PC gaming rigs you have on your desk at home. This approach gave them access to a virtual supercomputer, giving them access to 10 times more computational performance than with comparable CPU-based

systems. That’s a level of processing powe r that once was only available on dedicated, multi-million dollar supercomputers. With this tremendous computing power at their disposal, the researchers were able to run thousands of complex computer simulations of HIV protease, each for

hundreds of nanoseconds for a total of almost a millisecond. That gives them a very high-probability that their simulation represented real-world behaviors. Simulations of this length and complexity would have been unfeasible to achieve using a computing system based on CPUs alone. These findings have been published in the latest edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). So, next time you fire up “Assassin’s Creed III” or another PC game that screams for massive GPU performance, think of how cool it is that the very same technology is helping solve some of society’s biggest problems.

product, giving the Twist a sleeker look. To activate the Twist, you simply have to twist the top half of the speaker one way for wireless (Bluetooth), which lights up the centre of the Damson logo with a blue light, or the other way for the 3.5mm jack input, lighting the logo with a white light. It’s a nice design feature which adds to the feeling of brilliant craftsmanship that emanates from the Twist. Just like it’s baby brother, the Twist

Offering a full range of hairdressing on both Afro Caribbean and European hair, The Phoenix popped in and had a chat with owner Michelle to find out a little more. Tell us about Intwined Beauty- how did it start? I had always dreamed of owning my own salon but having five children saw that any plans were put on hold. After a lot of determination and encouragement from my family and friends, I took the leap and opened on Mayday 2012. It was a great feeling knowing this shop was mine to make a success. What inspired you? When I left school, I used to work at a Wolverhampton salon called Ebony Rooms. My manager there was a man called Michael and he was the best ever- he taught

me all I know. Outside of my family, inspiration definitely came from him. What do you say about Black hairdressers being notoriously expensive? Intwined beauty understands we are living in some trying times, that's why we’re affordable and reliable; we won’t double book or let you down on your important occasions. I wanted to create an environment where people could book an appointment, ‘chillax’ and enjoy our professional service

What are your plans for the future? I can only see us growing in 2013! We are looking to rent out our beauty room and a chair for a talented hairdresser/barber. Intwined Beauty is open now, opening hours are Monday 12:30pm - 17:30 Tuesday to Saturday 9:30am 18:00. The salon is located at 13 Bridge Street, Walsall, WS1 1DP. R A Third Of Holiday Makers Admit To Being ‘An Idiot Abroad’

A

ccording to research, Brits have become a nation of Karl Pilkingtons – AKA ‘An Idiot Abroad,’ with a third of UK holidaymakers relating to his way of thinking. A study by has found that as much as 48% admit to not wanting an adventure holiday, with 52% of travelers often ignoring famous landmarks on holiday. Out of 2,000 adults surveyed, 37% find sight-seeing stressful, with a majority preferring to take it easy by the pool or on the beach. Only 23% choose their holiday destination to experience a differ-

ent culture and a shockingly 5% stating that coming home is the best thing about going away. 85% agreed that going on the holiday is the highlight of their year, with 34% sharing many of the negative views expressed by funny man Karl on the hit TV show. Meeting new people, recharging the batteries and lazing in the sun topped the list of holiday priorities, whilst embracing foreign culture was at the bottom. 18% said they would only eat English food while abroad. Calum Macdonald from Latedeals.co.uk, the holiday firm

behind the survey, said: “Long working hours and busy family lives means annual holidays are the only time we get to relax. New environments and customs can be exciting for seasoned travelers but can cause anxiety too. So, with many people only getting one or two weeks per year, they’d rather take it easy and not traipsing around local tourist spots. An Idiot Abroad and Karl Pilkington represent this view to the extreme, but I think the fact that people can relate to some of the things he’s saying is the reason why it is such a popular show.”

speed and performance plus superior cabin productivity. With its extraordinary short-field performance and transcontinental range, this super-large jet can carry world leaders to more places faster than any other in its class. All in the luxury of corporate aviation’s most comfortable and ‘business connected’ cabin.

Christmas 2012 Message from Hugh Riley, Secretary General Caribbean Tourism Organization

I

think it's fair to say that 2012 has been both an exciting and a challenging year for the Caribbean tourism industry. Visitor arrivals to the region continued to rise, fuelled by improvements in the US and Canadian markets. Yet, we continued to face challenges in Europe, particularly the UK market from which the numbers have been falling. Visitor spending has also been sluggish. The latest figures from our research department reveal a five per cent rise in arrivals overall. There are clear signs that our performance in the US – our region’s main source market - is improving, with arrival numbers up by 5.3 per cent. The Canadian market has also continued to grow, with total arrivals from the Great White North matching the US at 5.3 per cent. The UK, on the other hand, has recorded a decline of over six per cent. The Summer Olympics did have some effect, leading to marginal growth in the UK economy, which is still struggling to rebound. Another factor we can’t ignore is the severe impact that the unfair and discriminatory Air Passenger Duty is having on our region’s performance in the British market. Much to the disappointment and frustration of the Caribbean, this crippling tax is due to rise even further in April 2013 while the discriminatory aspect of the distance ‘banding’ system remains. A family of four visiting the Caribbean and flying in economy will be expected to fork out 332 pounds sterling for APD – and double that amount for a few extra inches of leg room if they fly in any class above economy. On the contrary, that same family would pay less APD to fly to US destinations that are far further away from London

than any Caribbean country. This is an issue the CTO and its member countries and partners will continue to fight. Despite the many challenges which the Caribbean faced, we got through 2012 with our chins up and our resolve unfazed. Many of our member-countries have scored major successes regionally and internationally, often parlaying those wins to the benefit of their tourism sector. We at the CTO have been energized by our new vision “To position the Caribbean as the most desirable, year round, warm weather destination by 2017” and the recently elected CTO chairman, Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty has begun her two-year tenure with a pledge to refocus attention on urgent and essential areas including aviation. She immediately established an Aviation Task Force to develop solutions to the region’s aviation problems, including the issue of taxation. As we prepare to enter 2013, we look forward to working more closely with all of members and partners. As the international agency that leads tourism development in the Caribbean, we know there are plenty of opportunities to improve the quality and the value of the services we provide. We take our responsibility seriously and will use every resource available to us to improve the quality of life of all Caribbean people through tourism. On behalf of the Chairman, The Hon. Beverly NicholsonDoty, the Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism, the Board of Directors, the diverse membership and Staff of the CTO I wish you and yours a happy and blessed Christmas and a safe, peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Qatar Airways Congratulates Winner At World Squash Tournament In Doha

Q

atar Airways, Official Airline of the Men’s Qatar PSA World Championship 2012, congratulates World Champion Ramy Ashour from Egypt on winning this year’s squash tournament in Doha. In what can only be described as exhilarating, Ashour defeated fellow countryman Mohamed El Shorbagy during the finals held on December 14 at Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex in the Qatari capital. Ashour’s 2-11, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8 win after battling against El Shorbagy for 90 minutes kept fans

on the edge as the game unfolded. Ashour, who at 16 became the youngest ever World Junior champion, along with 64 other players from 21 countries, was yet another competitor. Qatar Airways has enjoyed being involved in numerous squash tournaments over the years and was pleased to reinforce its support as the title sponsor of the PSA World Squash Championship 2012, held in Doha between December 7 – 14. “We extend our congratulations to Ramy Ashour on his championship win. There are plans to sell the devices across 10 other West African countries as well as Belgium, France and India. Mr Mankou said he hoped to launch a cheaper tablet for students next year.

JCB engineers a unique fashion shoot for 2013

I

n an imaginative use of its signature yellow, JCB has teamed up with George Bamford Photography to present a unique twist on the world of the fashion shoot. The 2013 JCB calendar features some of the UK's top models on a fashion shoot, with JCB's factories as the backdrop. Clothed in the company's unique colour, the models, including Rosie Jones, contrast the cold hard world of engineering with the artistic worlds of fashion and photography. The concept developed by George Bamford and the JCB DesignWorks creative team, features unique garments created through the study of fluid dynamics. The 12 month project saw the team of digital artist Stuart Reeves, art director Steve Brazier and George compose the images. With a reputation for fashion and lifestyle photography, George says he was determined to explore new creative territory for the 2013 Calendar: "I have been fascinated by the possibilities of fluid on fashion, taking

the colourful hues we take for granted on vehicles and moulding them to the human form. The results are fantastic! Beautiful models wrapped sumptuously in swirls of rich JCB yellow, displaying a dynamic female confidence in a striking factory setting. An exquisite combination!" George graduated from the Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Photography and a Masters in printing. Having completed his studies, he served his apprenticeship working alongside some of the most famous photographers in the business; Antoine Verglas, Rankin and John Swannell, former assistant to David Bailey. It was during his apprenticeship with Swannell that George developed a strong interest in couture fashion photography. The creation of the 2013 calendar used some of the latest photography and digital imagery techniques, along with some genuine lateral thinking and artistic flair. The 2013 JCB calendar is available to order now.

7th Award for the Ford Ranger in 2012

T

he Ford Ranger has won 4x4 Magazine Pick-Up of the Year 2013, making it a record-breaking seventh award in 12 months for the vehicle. The UK pick-up market has grown by more than 25 per cent since 2009, with eight models currently competing in the segment. The Ford Ranger has emerged victorious from a group of seven vehicles reviewed – the most com-

prehensive pick-up test 4x4 Magazine has ever conducted. Nigel Fryatt, 4x4 Magazine E d i t o r, said: "Ford's new Ranger has significantly raised the bar in the pick-up market. Our extensive test showed the variety of products

that are now on the UK market, and the Ranger topped them all with better overall ability, superb r i d e quality and an interior that makes it hard to believe this is a commercial vehicle. Indeed, no other pick-up came close in terms

of interior comfort and specification." Ford UK managing director, Mark Ovenden, said: “The awards keep on coming for the Ford Ranger as it continues to assert its presence in the market. Our customers have really welcomed the introduction of the all-new model, boosting sales by nearly 20 per cent compared with last year.”

cLaren Automotive has designed and developed a range of products inspired by, and focused on, the passion of driving. The products are all available from the recently launched McLaren eStore – www.mclarenstore. com – and the range includes a variety of stylish accessories, clothing and luggage, based around the designs evident throughout McLaren and the groundbreaking 12C high performance sports car. These fashionable and versatile items are perfect for the most avid McLaren fan or those most focused on enjoying the thrill of the open road.

Men’s accessories

McLaren has a long-standing relationship with TAG Heuer, and the Swiss luxury watchmaker has produced a special edition chronograph wristwatch, designed in collaboration with McLaren Automotive Design Director, Frank Stephenson. The Tag Heuer Carrera MP4-12C chronograph takes direct inspiration from the high performance 12C sports car after which it is named, through the use of carbon fibre for the dial. On the reverse, sapphire crystal inserts reveal the movement be-

hind the high-tech face. Limited to only 1,000 pieces globally, it is available exclusively through the McLaren global retail network and at the McLaren eStore – www. mclarenstore.com. Highlighting the pioneering steps made by McLaren is a carbon fibre and mesh McLarenSport mechanical bracelet by Links of London. McLaren first introduced a carbon fibre chassis to Formula 1 in 1981, setting a new benchmark in the sport. From here, all McLaren cars, both for the road and for the circuit, have been built using the lightweight structure. The stylish bracelet includes design features motivated by the components of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 cars, with the woven mesh of the bracelet inspired by the piping used by McLaren Racing.

Bags of space

Designed to maximise the 144 litres of space beneath the bonnet of the 12C is the stylish, fitted luggage set. The three bespoke cases were designed in collaboration with the McLaren Automotive design studio, and are made from an exclusive carbon fibre outer material, with carbon fibre handles and silver or McLaren Orange detail stitching. The design on the exteri-

or of the bags emulates the engine cover of the groundbreaking 12C, while the lining of each case is finished with ‘Space Fabric’, which is used to upholster the seats in the 12C. The cases are available in three sizes – 59cm x 43cm x 22.5cm; 59cm x 39cm x 22.5cm; 40cm x 30cm x 16cm.

Clothing and accessories

A variety of exclusive, high quality leather accessories complement the range, including a black leather wallet and card holder, finished in carbon fibre weave-effect leather with McLaren orange stitching, and a pair of elegant driving gloves produced from luxury fullgrain black sheepskin leather, with contrasting McLaren Orange piping. The gloves are ergonomically-designed to ensure comfort and perfect grip. A range of versatile and stylish clothing including a luxury slim-fit Italian, black sports jacket, black polo shirt and black cap is also available. The sleek, light weight, slim fit jacket features internal heat-welded stitching and outer tapered sides to ensure a superior finish, while the polo shirt and cap, both finished in black, include a subtle McLaren logo.

100 Years of Aston Martin T

he globally-renowned British luxury sports car maker will mark its first 100 years with a series of UK and international celebrations highlighting the unique success of the brand worldwide. Boasting the strongest product line-up in its 99 years to date, Aston Martin has recently introduced its new ultimate GT – the exceptional Vanquish – and timeless new DB9. The new cars have been unveiled to global media acclaim and, in the case of the Vanquish, numerous prestigious awards. Aston Martin has also played a key role in one of the year’s most hotly-anticipated films, with the iconic DB5 stealing the automo-

tive limelight in the latest James Bond blockbuster, Skyfall.

Centenary launch

15 January 2013 marks the official incorporation of the company 100 years ago and to commemorate the historic occasion the oldest surviving Aston Martin – A3 – and a stunning new Vanquish, the brand’s ultimate GT, will take their places at a photo call at Henniker Mews in Chelsea – the original home of Aston Martin – where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled. In the evening of 15 January the Aston Martin Heritage Trust Walter Hayes Memorial Lecture will take place in central London with A3 and Vanquish again guest starring alongside actor Sir John

Standing as Lionel Martin, telling the story of his early days and his experience of making the first Aston Martin in Lionel Martin’s own words.

Centenary logo

To mark its first century in business, Aston Martin has created a special centenary logo: a dynamic spiralling design derived from the nautilus shell, one of the most perfectly proportioned and mathematically precise objects found in nature. Ninety nine points arranged in an elegant helix spiral out from the Aston Martin logo and culminate in a red '100' to mark the celebration year. The logo has been designed to express forward motion while also acknowledging the importance of the past.

Brits on the road to breakdown

W

ith the wet weather setting in and driving conditions becoming more treacherous, Brits should be making sure they protect themselves when braving the roads this winter. However, new research1 from Asda Money has found that the cold conditions don’t change Brits driving habits, with over two thirds of car owners (61%) not servicing their car before they hit the winter roads. When it comes to getting ready for long winter journeys, most Brits haven’t thought about preparing their cars, should disaster strike. Only 30% of drivers check the anti-freeze, even fewer test their tyres (17%) and what’s worse, almost half of drivers (49%) never check their oil or their lights (47%). Women are the worst for neglecting their cars, with just over two thirds (64%) not checking their lights ahead of the winter months com-

pared to just over half (54%) of men, and 63% not checking their oil before the weather worsens, versus 55% of men. The nation’s drivers are even neglecting to make sure they have the most basic equipment in their cars to help them on their winter journeys. Women are more likely to never carry

this equipment, with 73% saying they never have a reflective jacket in the car versus 57% of men, nor a warning triangle (66% vs 55%). Drivers across the country are failing to take these precautious, and less than 20 per cent of drivers from the North and Wales send their cars for a full check before the winter months, despite the recent blizzard of bad news of floods and storms af-

fecting these areas in particular. Kirsty Ward, head of Asda Money says: “Winter has well and truly set in now. While the freezing weather has lifted a bit, temperatures are still low, and with storms and rain potentially on the way the nation’s drivers need to make sure they’ve made all the checks necessary and stocked their cars up for those long journeys. We all know that sometimes it feels like there isn’t the time to do this but driving during the winter months can be dangerous and by simply taking a few minutes to prepare your car, you might be able to avoid a potential accident or breakdown this winter. “Roads are likely to be crowded over Christmas, and conditions difficult, so that extra care is needed. It is important to make sure you have breakdown cover in place to deal with any problems that the winter might throw at you.”

ord Coe emphasized that ‘legacy’ would be the buzz-world of the London 2012 Olympic Games, not just in Britain, but throughout the world. The overwhelming success of the likes of ‘superman’ Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Kirani James have left their indelible marks on the future of athletics throughout the Caribbean. Dreaming of his own golden Olympic moment is 19-year-old Royston Queely. A native of St. Kitts & Nevis, in the Leeward Islands, the former Charlstown Secondary School pupil and sprint champion has Rio heavily on his mind and has already raised eye-brows of people in the athletics know with performances that has drawn the attention of some of the world’s top coaches and trainers, especially at well-renowned Lough-

borough University. A well rounded Queely has been taken under the wing of Nick Dakin, Director of Coaching at Loughborough and is already focussing on his goal which is the 2016 Rio Games. Says a confident Royston: “I’ve done some remarkable times in the 400, 200 and 100 metres in recent times but want to focus on the 2 and 4 alone to run sub-45 and 20, respectively, within the next 2-3 years. The success of the Jamaican athletics team, plus that of Grenadian Kirani James has inspired me and I want to follow their lead and be the next big thing from my islands since former world sprint champion, Kim Collins. I want to be the next big thing from the Caribbean on a world stage.” Brazil’s calling for Royston Queely and he’s determined to answer that call, in no uncertain way.

oungsters are set to get greater access to golf through a new initiative launched at Hatchford Brook Golf Course in Birmingham. The initiative, supported by former Aston Villa and Chelsea star Paul Elliot CBE, will allow golfers access to free golf club hire at every Mytime Golf course across the UK. The ‘Clubs 4 All’ golf club amnesty runs until January 31 and aims to encourage golfers to donate their unwanted golf clubs or sets which will then be reconditioned for young adults to play at Hatchford Brook and six other Birmingham City golf courses. The ‘Clubs 4 All’ amnesty is about inspiring more youngsters to take up the sport without having to invest heavily for equipment. Former England man Elliot said: “This initiative is such a smart way to give greater access to the sport. It is so important that young people are given as much help and support to stay fit and healthy in as many ways as possible. ‘Clubs 4 All’ helps with fitness and develop social skills. It’s a real win-win situation.” Brad Chard, Mytime Golf Divisional Manager said: “This is a truly exciting opportunity for young people in this area and for the sport in general. Many young adults are inspired by golfing stars like Rory McElroy but because of the cost involved simply cannot afford to play. The ‘Clubs 4 All’ amnesty is about helping the next generation.” Other ‘Clubs 4 All’ courses include; Boldmere Golf Course, Cocks Moors Wood, Harborne Church Farm, Hilltop, Lickey Hills and Pype Hayes

She lines up at the National Indoor Arena for the British Athletics Grand Prix on February 16 The 2010 European bronze medalist has regularly competed in 4x400m relays indoors and memorably held off Olympic 400m champion Sanya Richards-Ross to anchor the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team to a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul in March. She has shown impressive 400m form outdoors in the past, including defeating Christine Ohuruogu to win the UK Championships and World Trials in 2011, and boasts an outdoor personal best of 51.26. Although she has regularly competed indoors over 60m, 200m and

800m, the British Athletics International Match will be ShakesDrayton’s first ever indoor individual 400m and the Londoner is hoping that making her debut at the state of the art arena will allow her to start the 2013 season with a bang. “I’ve run a lot of relay legs indoors but competing in the individual 400m will be a new experience for me. More than anything, it’s a great chance to compete in front of some loud British crowds again.” The 2009 European Under-23 champion showed her world-class talent by running a 400m hurdles personal best of 53.77 at Crystal Palace last July but was hampered by a hip injury in the Olympic semi-final a month later, narrowly failing to make the final.
