years. During the time in which the shop has grown, Mary has remained a ever present member of her local community and has spent a great deal of time and effort helping those around her. For this reason then, it was exceptionally upsetting when we heard the news that Mary was diagnosed with Blood Cancer last year and it sent shock waves through the Slade Road community. It all started with a routine check up after a trip to India, but to her family's horror, the news the doctor brought was devastating. It was not jet-lag or fatigue as they had assumed. It was something much more deadly, and sinister.

“I had been on holiday for a month to see the temples. When I came back I felt tired. My family started laughing and joked with me saying 'you have only just got back and now you have another holiday. Lazy!”

government watchdog has awarded the top grade of ‘Outstanding’ to Lambeth Council for the way children and young people are looked after by its fostering service. This follows an inspection by Ofsted, which monitors children and young people’s service, as well as schools and colleges, across the country. Cllr Rachel Heywood Lambeth Council Cabinet member for Children and Families said: “The positive comments from the Ofsted inspectors are testimony to all the hard work our Fostering Service puts in to ensure that children are looked after in families that can offer them the best possible care. The key focus of our service is the drive to find the most appropriate placement

for every individual child.” Council’s Executive Director for Children and Young People’s Service, Debbie Jones, said: “Choosing to It’s always vital that we ensure we recruit the best possible people within our communities. We then need to make sure that we can give them excellent support to care for our children, many of whom will have had very difficult early experiences. This Report shows that this is what you can expect from Lambeth’ Families deserve the best in Lambeth and it’s the Fostering Service’s ambition to deliver the best.“ The Ofsted inspection report says outcomes for children and young people are “outstanding” which means the service is of “exceptional quality that significantly exceeds minimum requirements”

done to provide an effective response to poverty, with the spreading of goodwill in places such as churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship amongst others. In the presence of some of the most renowned figures in their respective faiths, locally and internationally, the ‘The World Interfaith Week’ proved a landmark occasion highlighting Birmingham’s mark as the leader when it comes to interfaith collaboration and multiculturalism in Britain. In posing the question: “What is poverty and how does it affect us?” delegates made clear that over 50% of children in the innercity live on, or below, the poverty

line, prompting speakers to come up with their ideas of eradicating the city of its plight. Abdullah Rehman of the Balsall Heath Forum organisation spoke of how, with other faith groups,

they’ve helped to rid the district of its plague of prostitution, allowing children to live and grow safely. Monsignor Canon Daniel

McHugh, Archdiocese of Birmingham, emphasised how the Catholic Church is more engaged with other faiths to help the city overcome its poverty. Further contributions came from Dr. Andrew Smith of Faith Reflection, Nishkam Director, Amrick Singh and Special Keynote speaker, Bhai Sahib Dr. Mohinder Singh, fifth in line of Sikh spiritual leaders, all with the message of every faith in Birmingham working together with one common goal. Faith Roundtable Chair, Councillor John Cottan, concluded: “Faith is a vibrant part of our streets. We must all work together to fight against poverty.”

he APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) on Faith and Society visited Birmingham to explore how faith based initiatives are promoting wellbeing and providing services in the city. The group chaired by Stephen Timms MP, together with, Lord Sheikh, Baroness Kathleen Richardson and Jim Dobbin MP visited local faith centres including Birmingham Central Mosque, Cen-

tral Synagogue and Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ) Gurudawara (Handsworth) to meet with leaders and Council members to discuss the impact of faith on the city and their growing number of initiatives. They visited GNNSJ and the Nishkam campus, of which one highlight included the Guru’s Kitchen, where over one million free vegetarian meals are prepared and served every year to visitors by volunteers. Touring the faith in-

spired Marg Sat Santokh Ltd-community cooperative for economic development-they also visited the renowned new free Nishkam Primary School before exploring their experiences and innovative contributions across the Birmingham. The delegate identified barriers faced, whilst reflecting on the progress Faith Based Organisations (FBO) had made in creating interfaith harmony and community cohesion.

ees and maintenance payments to foster parents in Coventry are to rise as part of an increase the number of carers. From April fees paid to foster carers will rise by two per cent while maintenance payments and all other child care allowances are to rise by five per cent. General allowances rising by five per cent means a weekly general allowance for a child aged up to four will jump to £262.68 while the allowance for a young person aged between 16 and 18 will increase to £453.06. Holiday allowance will also rise as part of the move from between £394.02 to £679.59 depending on the child's age. Further changes will see friends and family weekly allowances aligned with internal foster carer fees and any level two foster carers who has completed the relevant training and has at least five years experience will automatically receive level three payments. The reason for the changes is to make foster caring more attractive to people and to bring the city more in line with that national Fostering Network. Coventry City Council's Cabinet Member for Children Learning and Young People, Councillor Jim O'Boyle, believes the move makes perfect sense, saying: "We value our current carers and appreciate the cost pressures that they face too and want to reward them for their hard work and loyalty. The fact is that independent foster agencies are twice as costly as our own carers so it makes sense that we are as attractive as possible to reduce the amount we currently pay in the long run Timms, Labour MP for East Ham, said: “We saw some great ideas and inspirations and was especially impressed by the Nishkam Primary School. We were very pleased that they were our hosts. Lord Sheikh, founder and Chair of the Conservative Muslim Forum, went on to comment: “I was most impressed by how work is being done on the ground level amongst the community,” said Lord Sheikh. “The Nishkam Centre is a role model, he continued. Bhai Sahib Dr Mohinder Singh reminded all about the significance of partnership working and a unified faith inspired approach. He said: “We need to consider personal exposure as we humans are a function of our exposure. If people are further exposed to faith communities, people will see that faith is an agent of goodness. The UN Millennium Development Goals compel us to work together on serving humanity; we must form partnerships between faith based organisation, Governments, local agencies, civic bodies and society.” “The fact that the All Party Parliamentary Group visited Birmingham reflects the incredible work already being carried out by our faith communities,” said Cllr John Cotton, Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Social Cohesion and Equalities.

Mary with her husband, daughter and granddaughter at her daughters wedding

Continued from Front Page

As the fatigue continued though, she became more concerned.“When I saw my doctor he said there is nothing wrong with me I am just tired, but have a blood test.”The next day she received a phone call from the doctor telling her to come see him immediately. “Does your side hurt? The doctor asked me.” Sometimes. I replied. 'Well, your spleen has grown', he said, and then he came out with it, straight away. 'You've got blood cancer'. Just like that.” Testament to her nature to put others first, Mary tried to continue like everything was normal, unable to bring herself to tell her family of her condition knowing the grief it would cause. As three days passed it was impossible to hide it any longer. Her suffering was all too visible and her son, unsure of what was going on, had answered the phone from the hospital to inform Mary of another appointment at Heartlands. “I started crying, I told him I had blood cancer, and that he would have to tell dad for me”.

Operations

Mary had to undergo two major operations to save her life. First, her spleen had to be removed in an operation that required 33 stitches. “When I woke I was like 'what is all this?' I had wires up in my nose and I couldn't move. After 24 hours I said you have to remove this morphine or I'll be here forever. I want to go home.” Slowly the doctors removed all the wires to her request and on Christmas day, four days after the operation, she was back home with her family. The removal of her spleen was not enough to solve the issue and a risky bone marrow transplant, which is a surgery notorious for its pain and debilitating effects on its patients, was also required. The procedure involved chemotherapy for one week, in which she lost her hair. “I couldn't move, I was really weak and couldn’t eat or drink because its very strong medicine.”

Moving Forward

Initially given 27 months to live, and in the face of all these hardships, Mary has surprised both her family and doctors with her bravery and resilience. Mary's husband and their three children aged 27,

n my religion we believe in the Guru Granth Sahib. During my transplant I had prayers on my phone which I would leave on 24/7 on my iPod. When I used to come home I always went to the Soho Road Gurdwara to pray. This would give me the energy and strength to carry on with my illness. I also used to attend Bala Balanakji Temple in West Bromwich. By attending these holy places I gained mental and physical support, along with a positive

feeling that one day I could overcome this illness. I was very lucky that I received a bone marrow transplant from someone in Germany. This person was like a gift send from God, as otherwise there was no hope and I was given 27 months to live. From this I have learned that be having hope and being strong you can overcome anything. Never lose hope. God has given me a second chance to live and I would like to use it to help others through this difficult journey.

l Mary in her 30’s 25 and 23 supported her throughout the surgery and chemotherapy and she is now on the mend and eager to get back to what she does best: helping the community. Due to the nature of her condition, it would be unwise for her to risk going back to work though. “I have been told I cant go back to work for one year in case I catch a infection. After a year my body will start making its own blood and I will no longer need transfusions.”

Hayers

Mary, whose real name is Balbikaur Hayer is originally from Punjab, India. Together with her hus-

band, Tirath, they started Hayer's supermarket 28 years ago and they have been selling goods to the locals in Erdington ever since. “We work hard but big supermarkets are tough competition, in the past we could open for longer hours in order to get more business but now that supermarkets are open 24 hours a day it is no longer effective” said her husband. Business is still good, and Hayer's receives customers from beyond the local population too. They enjoy passing trade from places such as Sutton Coldfield, Erdington and Wylde Green, from people who are looking for authentic Asian ingredients. Despite the seriousness of the illness, Mary and her husband remain strong willed and refuse to let threaten Hayer's supermarket with closure. “I don't want to move because I will miss all my customers, you know...” said Tirath, “and if we sell the shop we will be missed too.” After giving so much to the community her whole life, it is really heart-warming for Mary to receive the amount of support she has. “Everyone has prayed for me, we have some very good customers who have brought flowers and who come every day. I think that is the only reason why I am still here, because of these prayers. We have had no trouble in 28 years. The community like us and we like the community.”

to provide jobs for people with mental illness, and this have proven successful in helping to rehabilitate members of the community who are vulnerable and have seen state support for themselves cut while the government figures out how to repair the British economy.

Strength

No matter what has been thrown at her the whole family have tried to think optimistically. At first Mary found it difficult not to cry in the first two weeks, but despite being on the verge of death, Mary stresses the need to stay strong and refuse to think negatively, for she believes that this one of the reasons why she is still here. “I want to say to the other people that have cancer who think “Oh, I'm going to die. That is it” that you have to be strong! A lot of people survive.” All I kept thinking was I'm going to get better and I going to get back to work.”

Come see me for help

Mary has expressed her desire to offer her help to anyone who is sick and to talk to anyone who is battling with cancer or illness and feels like they need support. “Whoever has cancer, if they are worried I can see them and I can try to help them or they can come to see me.” What makes our community so vibrant is the willingness of people to help others for no gain of their own. Mary and The Phoenix would like to thank Heartlands and Queen Elizabeth Hospital; all the doctors, surgeons, consultants, with special thanks to Dr Mohindra at the Senior Cancer department in Queen Elizabeth and the members of the community who have donated their time and support to a woman who means so much to so many people. And of course we at the Phoenix would like to thank Mary and her family for their service to the community and we hope Mary makes a complete recovery.

What is blood cancer?

Bone Marrow Donations.

Blood cancer is a form of cancer which attacks the blood, bone marrow, or lymphatic system. Of the three types of blood cancer each have different prognoses, but overall survival rates with blood cancer increased radically in the late 20th century with the development of advanced treatments. When caught early, blood cancer can be very manageable in some cases, which is one very good reason to regularly meet with you doctor and check up on your health, regardless of your age.

There is a clear shortage of bone marrow donors, and it is not enough to rely on donations to come from the family members of each patient. Only 30% of relatives are suitable match for donation if a member of their family require a transplant so other donations on the bone marrow registry are crucial to saving lives.

ommuters and shoppers in Birmingham were treated to an impromptu dance performance thanks to a team of flashmobbers from John Taylor Hospice. The dancers were hidden among the crowds in Victoria Square before they suddenly peeled off their jackets, revealed John Taylor Hospice T-shirts and broke out into a choreographed routine. Despite heavy rain, last month’s three minute dance presentation launched ‘Sponsor the Night’ a new campaign aimed at encouraging people, groups and businesses to invest in providing funding for John Taylor’s Hospice at home team to sit with patients in their own homes during the night. The team of dancers, who were given the extra boost by meeting

Birmingham City FC’s Wade Elliott and Steve Caldwell just before stepping out, have been rehearsing since the beginning of January, perfecting their technique with the help of choreographers Sandy Robinson and Mel Flint. Hospice at Home Team Leader, Gale Clarke said: “The flashmob was really good fun and the response from people was excellent.” The night sits ensure specialised round-the-clock support not only for those the Hospice cares for but also for their families. Gale continued: It was a great way of launching ‘Sponsor the Night’ which is a really important campaign for John Taylor Hospice. Having appropriate care and support through the night helps to ensure people can stay in their own homes at the end of life.”

Big City Culture, Big City Sit Down but no Big City Arts Fest? be the definitive mix of arts, music, dance, sport, heritage and culture that Birmingham is going to pitching to the world. We need to invest, nurture and support genuinely independent culture, not just with a marketing spend but with real investment. Couple of years ago the city council opted to choke off cash to ten of the Birmingham’s leading international cultural success stories – all independents – including Stan’s Cafe, Craftspace, Women and Theatre

and others. Bad mistake. Some have gone under, and those that survived now have little reason to sign up to a new agenda from those who value them so little. I’m betting that most of the Birmingham City Councils arts budget is now clustered around half-a-dozen venues probably in the City Centre servicing a white middle class audience. Is this a true reflection of a young diverse Birmingham? And is this really how we should spend the Tax Payers cash? My view? Now its time to cash in and bankroll a new generation of the makers, doers, entrepreneurs and cultural leaders - Not the same diners sitting down in the same old dining room with the same old plates. New leaders, supported by the city and sharing a vision. Because that’s when Brum is at its best – making and doing, creating and selling. Bringing the world here to buy stuff. And because lots of people like pot noodle and paninis – and for Arts Fest, I think it’s time was done. Ammo Talwar MBE CEO

jobs for the right people, who need it the most. Hope for many people will come from the creation of this number of jobs, the Baroness continued to meet some of the individuals who are on their final day of their Green assessor training, who shared their experiences and feelings about the importance of the job to them. Carillion, are committed to sustain

360 jobs to begin with in the area, increasing to helping 600 people from priority groups into training and work. Cabinet Member James McKay, explained “ This scheme will help families… it will create training and employment opportunities.” Its clear that with ministerial support, this could provide jobs for people in areas of the country who need it the most. Evidently this project is not only environmentally friendly, but will launch many individuals into a successful career path for the rest of their lives.

masterpiece of art has been created to celebrate the bicentenary of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group. It is expected to become an iconic symbol to honour the cities industrial heritage. It is one in a series or exciting projects which will be undertaken by the Chamber in the build-up to the bicentenary dinner which takes place at the ICC in April, which will be addressed by Lord Michael Heseltine. The creation has been designed by Tom Tebby, artist for Birmingham City University and expertly manufactured by Acme Whistles, where former Chamber president Simon Topman is Managing Director. Beautifully constructed from brass, the sculpture has stems and leaves which are the shape of the Birmingham Chamber Group's logo. Excitingly, the Chamber members will be bestowed with the opportunity to have their own company logo perfectly etched on one side of the leaves which will record their association with

the Chamber. The aspiration that the reverse leaf will hopefully feature a piece of artwork from local schools and colleges. Standing tall at 4ft, the structure will be revealed at the Chambers

dinner. It will also been shown at Birmingham Made Me in the following months, with permanent display at Chamber of Commerce in Edgbaston for the world to see.

Jenny Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham Chamber Group said: “We believe that the stunning figure created by Tom will become a symbol of commerce and industry in our great city”. The Chamber originally launched its bicentenary year with an igniting debate involving the new secretary general of the TUC. A poignant masterpiece such as this will stand the test of time for future generations to benefit and serve as a symbol of Birmingham's successful industrial history.

Flexible Working Hours for All !

T

C

hanges in legislation from 2014 will see a considerable increase in the number of requests for flexible working hours. Therefore, employers have twelve months to prepare themselves for these interesting adjustments to minimise disruption to their operations. Although there have been numerous delays in the past, it seems likely the change will come through at some point this year. Flexible working hours include : working from home, part-time or term-time work and even a change to working hours: But who benefits from this ? Post research, it appears that both employers and the individual has tangible benefits for all involved. Not only can the change often aid in retaining staff but also increase commitment and loyalty. Furthermore, these changes can benefit the employee by allowing flexibility when balancing work family responsibilities or other commitments. It appears that the upcoming flexible working can be of benefit to employers, but of course there are concerns as to whether this will affect business administration with the increase in claims.

Rejuvenation for Sandwell Register Office

S

andwell's Register Office in West Bromwich is at the beginning of an exciting £60,000 refurbishment. The stunning Grade 2 listed Highfields building is experiencing a facelift inside and out. A brand new room for wedding and civil partnership ceremonies has also been created which resides on the West Bromwich High Street. The luscious gardens around Highfields are being landscaped and will include new paths, benches and a resurfacing of the car park. The work on the Register office is expected to be completed during April which is following the refurbishment of the Sandwell Suite which

accommodates an impressive 85 guests for ceremonies. Cllr Mahboob Hussain from the Sandwell Council's cabinet commented on the service improvement : “ Highfield's is a fantastic building that was in need of some updating”. Cllr Hussain continued : “the new areas will be much more accessible for disabled and elderly people”. Couples will soon have the chance to see the results of the regeneration at a wedding fair on 14th April. On the day, there will be opportunities to take a look at the Register office and to see a bridal catwalk and numerous wedding suppliers including florists and photographers.

Back Our Farmers for Quality

I

n the wake of serious scrutiny over the source of the food we buy from supermarkets, The Phoenix visited the Farmer's Market in Birmingham to see how they have been affected. Located on New St in Birmingham city centre every first and third Wednesday of the month, it is a superb occasion to find food that you can trust. There has never been a better time to show your support for British farmers, and although it may cost slightly more than the big supermarkets' budget brands, you would not be paying for water filled meat that could be contaminated with other unknown products. One of the stalls, Woodhouse Farm, has been a regular feature of the Birmingham market for 13 years and they specialise in 100% beef, pork and lamb products directly grown from their farm in Leicestershire. Bob and Alan work the stall together and they think that consumers are right to be angry regarding the recent horsemeat revelations. “It's been going on for years”, said Bob, “we have seen an increase in popularity recently but people are price driven.” “ I had one man come up to me and ask “why isn't this joint of meat labelled as 86% pork like it is in supermarkets?” Well, that's because our pork is 100% pork! Alan told the Phoenix.

“That missing 14% is probably water which they inject into the meat with syringes, there was even a story of a customer who bought a piece of meat and found a plaster on it.” Bob is hopeful that there will be a shift in where consumers buy their meat “We’ve seen greater interest in our stuff and we hope there is a consumer backlash. You pay for the quality and you know what your getting; 100% meat guaranteed from our farm.” The discovery of horsemeat in beef products has led to a public scare on a European scale, and there are now calls that it is time for

British consumers to support our local farmers and not suppliers who have misled the public. There is a whole host of different products available at the farmer’s market too, from honey and jams to Indian and Caribbean specialities, and considering the great leap in quality it is certainly something to consider.

he first visit by the Right Honourable George Osborne MP was to Birmingham Assay Office this month. The chancellor was in the city for the launch of the prospectus of the Enterprise Zone including a huge 26 separate zones including the location of the new Birmingham Assay Office starting later this year. A tour of the vibrant Victorian building revealed the extensive and varied work which is underway. Not only was the essential hallmarking on display but also precious metal analysis and product safety testing. The Chief Executive Michael Allchin introduced the Chancellor to many staff during the tour, demonstrating the highly skilled workforce in a number of sectors including the Jewellery industry. The Chancellor also had the pleasure of visiting the analytical laboratory where he witnessed a range of methods being applied from scrap gold melted, which he expressed a great interest in. Mr. Allchin explained that although hallmarking volumes are beginning to fall due to increasing precious metal prices but gem validation is growing strongly.

To protect the employees who work in the Enterprise Zone, the business will be moving to grow and survive. Detailed designs are in their birthing stage, and is planned for construction beginning Summer 2013. It was clear that the Chancellor and his team were extremely appreciative of the time given by the Birmingham Assay Office with a much better understanding of one of the oldest institutions in and the potential that it has for a solid future.

LEGAL SERVICES - IMMIGRATION

with Jennifer Housen

I Appeal To Thee A warm welcome again to Phoenix readers and we want to thank you for your calls and comments since we started the page. Over the last few months, on this page, we have considered settlement (coming to live in the UK) for spouses, partners and children, as well as friends and relatives visiting the UK. We have given you the basic requirements (and the possible approach of the UKBA) for your family and friends making applications from their home country. Of course, things are not always plain sailing, and applications for visas made in your relatives’ home country may be refused. The question then is…Is that

‘the end of the road’? Well it may not be. This month, we explore and give guidance on what you can (or cannot) do when an applicant’s visa application is refused. When an applicant makes a visa application in his/her home country, the decision whether to grant the visa rests on the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) in the applicant’s country, who will consider all the documents and evidence that have been submitted. If the ECO feels that the there is insufficient evidence to support the application, they will refuse the visa. The next step then, is to consider whether or not to appeal. An appeal allows the applicant to ask that his case be reconsidered. The appeal is not heard at the High Commission or the Embassy where the refusal was made. It is heard before a tribunal in England. The considerations are different for visitors than for those seeking to come to the UK to live. If the applicant’s visitor visa application is refused, then he/she can only appeal if the application was to visit close family. If the person intended to visit in

the UK is a friend or distant relative, there is no automatic right of appeal. Regarding settlement visa applicants, they have an automatic right of appeal. Again, it must be that documentary evidence to support the requirements had been submitted with the application. With the new immigration rules, there are some very specific requirements and, as such, if they are not met, there may be little point in spending money to appeal. For example, for spouse visa applicants, if the sponsor (meaning the partner in the UK) is making less than the required minimum salary of £18,600, then if the refusal is based on that, an appeal will fail if there is nothing to show that the sponsor was making that salary at the date of application. In an appeal, an Applicant can only rely on documents and evidence which were submitted in the original application, but there is a small leeway to include new documentation but this is discretionary only, as the ECO would have made the decision based on whatever documents he had at the time of the application. Sometimes mistakes are made by the ECO, for example if documents submitted have

J been overlooked or misinterpreted. As such, if an Applicant feels that he/she had submitted all documents required and the application is genuine, then an appeal of the decision can be pursued. The cost of the appeal (Court fees) is £140. It must be submitted within 28 days of receiving the decision and it can take approximately 6-8 months for a hearing. It is important to remember that if there is a de-

portation order against the applicant, there can be no appeal (unless it is an error and there is in fact no deportation order). If there is a deportation order, it must be revoked and then a new application (not an appeal) is made. If you have any queries or concerns, contact The Immigration UK Partnership for an appointment in London or Birmingham.

am*, a British citizen, married Rukhsana*, a Pakistani citizen in Pakistan, in May 2012. Immediately after the wedding celebrations, Sam returned to England. Sam intended that Rukhsana would be able to make a settlement application to move to the UK to live with him. Unfortunately, because of the new immigration laws, Rukhsana was refused because the ECO did not believe that the marriage was genuine. In her visa application, Rukhsana did not include any photographs or letters to show that she and Sam had been communicating while they lived apart, but did include telephone records showing that there were numerous telephone calls between them. In the statement of support that she had included in her application, Rukhsana made mention of photographs but inadvertently did not include them. In her appeal application, Rukhsana set out the details of her appeal, and completed and signed the IAFT-2 Form and paid the fee. She argued that although the onus of proof was on her to show that her relationship with her husband was genuine and subsisting, the phone records should have been sufficient.

However, as she had mentioned that photographs were included when she made her application, it was clear it was an oversight. In the appeal application, she included the pictures of her and Sam together during his three trips to Pakistan. On a review of the case the decision was reversed before there was even a hearing, as based on the documentation, it was clear the Mission could have requested that she provide the photographs mentioned in her application. As there were no other issues to consider, she was requested to take her passport to the local Mission to have it endorsed with the visa and she was able to join Sam to start their new life as husband and wife. *Not their real names.

POETRY AND ART

r e n r o C y r t with Rajan Poe T his poem is based on a true experience whilst travelling through a country. I witnessed a despicable act of indecency and over those few weeks I started to hear countless stories of similar tales. But despite the country that you may think this took place in, the very same act happens all over the world. It is estimated that at this very moment over 2.5 million people are being forced into similar situations. The reality may be much dimmer than we can possibly imagine. Today spare a thought for those around the world whose greatest dreams of life could be an average day to you and I.

Mothers day and changing our perception:

We can emit the love of a mother, a father, brother, sister (or

whatever label we wish to attach to being a good human) to every sentient being on this planet. Blood may be thicker than water, but an open heart and a will of compassion is what really drives our relationships. Lets redefine the concept of mothers day and use it as a turning point in our lives that we can call its Mothers Love Day, and provide the love and compassion to those souls who desperately need it around the world, and send love and good feeling to all those around us. A moment’s practice of compassion and unconditional love is worth more than all the books on its subject on earth. Happy Mother’s Love Day to you all. Heal, Grow and Flourish, Rajan Singh Nazran

The Lonely child The monsoon months are so hard on you my friend. Your clothes are soaked with her melody, Your mind longing for an end. As the tourists relish the sounds of Gods beating drum, You stay distant, consumed in the act [but there is none]. A camera flashes and you hear the yells of 'smile' from foreign voices. A coin tossed your way, in the expectancy of genuine rejoices. You stay still, shivering in the cold, You know the feeling will never go old. The wet gloomy city smog thickens your despair, Other children dance, perform, act the lessons taught by their pimps with no care. But today there is no song to sing, or injury to play. You tried your best, despite what

others say. She was ill and frail too. You took her to the hospital what was there left to do? The doctors demanded payment otherwise it’s too late. You pleaded and cried, but they turned her away. You long to hear her voice, her melodious charm, The longing of her care, The crest of her arm. You did what you could, to place a stinking coin in a palm!! You took to the streets, only seven at the time. You asked, beg and borrowed until a quarter past nine. You were kidnapped, used, raped and sold too. You had no idea, what could you do? Was she well, did she survive? All the answers you were denied.

Nobody cared and you had to grow up so fast. So what's left in life? Is it really all just a farce. You may question if this is fact or fabrication. All you need to do is look into the eyes of this nation. We march for peace and mourn the dead But we have no respect for the living, Enough said.

Gurdas Maan UK Tour confirmed

he Living Legend Gurdas Maan is returning to the Wolverhampton Civic Hall with his forthcoming ‘Ishq Da Giddha’ - UK Tour 2013. His ties with the UK go back to the early 1980’s performing his blockbuster debut hit ‘Dil Da Mamala’ which smashed records worldwide. The new concert version of Quadrophenia, personally directed by Who founding member, Roger Daltrey, focuses on the original album and replaces the narrative used in previous stage versions with powerful imagery projected on an array of massive screens, designed to support, complement and propel the musical content of the work by setting it in the context of the history of the band. With fellow-founding member, Pete Townshend, The Who will be joined by Zak Starkey (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Simon Townshend (guitar/backing vocals), John Corey (keyboards), Loren Gold (keyboards/backing vocals) and Frank Simes (musical director, keyboards/backing vocals).

icking off with the winner of last month’s open mic competition, I Luv Live Birmingham was launched at Broad Street’s Oh Velvet Bar. Hosted by Capital Radio presenter, Sacha Brooks, a packed audience was treated to some of the best talents the city has on offer. 20-year-old open mic winner, Beenice, whose Bashment set got the crowd going, proved infectious as his set creating a bubbly atmosphere for the rest of the night. Big things for him in the near future. The soulful voice and pure lyrics of London-based singersongwriter, Shea, blew everybody away. Her jazz influenced style proving fresh and of the highest level. Wolverhampton rapper Macca followed. With his band CityLightz, he brought a fresh take on UK Rap/Grime with a high-energy performance easily winning over the crowd. His unique flow and delivery made it obvious why he was voted 'Hot For 2013’ by Radio 1xtra. Fourteen year old, Mahalia, was next up capturing the attention of everyone in the audience with her acoustic set. Headlining the show was Moorish Delta 7’s Malik, who put on an amazing show, I especially performing his standout "Blood Of A Martyr." Londonborn rapper Logic performed half of his set acapella. The last part of the night was an open mic set for unsigned artists. Ten performers took to the stage with standout performances coming from Deci4life.

isney on Ice: Lets Party returned in February at the LG Arena in Birmingham's NEC. The popular children’s show saw Disney's international team of award-winning, world-class figure skaters bring the Disney characters to life in high quality costumes and scenery. The extravaganza featured more than 50 classic and contemporary Disney characters all wrapped up in a compilation of worldwide celebrations and events. Of course the event proved incredibly popular with the children in the arena and the highlights included the Merry Un-birthday party, which saw children from the audience get involved on the ice, while the Mad Hatter held a party for classical Disney characters. It is an event that the whole family can enjoy and it involves the classic characters: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto celebrating a Very Merry Un-birthday Party with Alice and the Mad Hatter; a Royal Valentine’s Day Ball with the Disney Princesses; a Hawaiian extravaganza with Lilo & Stitch; a Halloween spook with the Disney Villains and a spectacular Christmas finale with Toy Story favourites Woody, Jessie and Buzz

Lightyear. The quality of the skating was superb, and the music played over the top invoked the best memories of watching the Disney films as a child. Its hard to criticise the fact that the skaters' vocals were dubbed over the top, considering the amount of effort they had put in the show, however it would of resulted in greater immersion had they of been speaking themselves. Part of the package we reviewed on the launch night of Let's Party

was a meet and greet with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, alongside food and drinks before the show. It was the perfect occasion for the family to relax and socialise before the show while the children ate and took a picture with the cast. While a healthy option in the food selection would have been welcome, particularly due to the large amount of small children present, the food was tasty and the meet and greet was faultless and really made the children happy. The Disney on Ice let's party tour continues throughout March in Liverpool, Sheffield and Nottingham.

A Dream Fulfilled The Jacksons’ Unity Tour

T

he First Family of music – the legendary Jacksons – have come to Birmingham for one night only! Ever since I was a little girl at home I have loved the late, great Michael Jackson - the beautiful, charismatic young man with a dazzling smile who first performed Rock With You on Top of the Pops in the late 70’s. I remember being transfixed by him on the telly, wondering who on earth this guy was as I’d never seen anyone perform the way he did – or since for that matter. He was mesmerising! I’m a total Michael fan – I have all his music and have read Moonwalking written by Michael himself as well as You Are Not Alone : Michael – Through a Brother’s Eyes written by Jermaine, who is also a favourite (I named my son after him!) as well as playful Marlon. That was before all of the horrible drama unfolded of course. Anyway to cut a long story short, this lifelong fan prepared to see her icons thanks to the amazing generosity of my big sister who deserves high praise and recognition for all that she has achieved – both personally and professionally. M is one of the most kind hearted, giving and loving human

By Butterfly 1965 beings that anyone could have for a sister and I am extremely proud that she is mine! I love you Sis from the bottom of my heart – always and forever. I arrived at the NIA bubbling with excitement because I knew that seeing his brothers would be seeing Michael himself. On taking my seat 12 rows from the front I was told that I’d missed the first performance by Denise Pearson from Five Star.

Breathtaking

The lights dimmed and a cheer went up in the packed auditorium as the musicians took their places on the stage. Then shortly afterwards the Jacksons came out to a deafening roar of applause and cheers – Tito, Marlon, Jackie and Jermaine all dressed in black with – and they didn’t fail to disappoint. They launched into a medley of their back catalogue of hits with Jermaine taking the lead on vocals – Blame it On the Boogie which got the crowd up on their feet, singing and dancing. Next up was one of my personal favourites originally sung by young Michael I Wanna Be Where You Are. Camcorders and digital cameras by now were hoisted into the air as everyone attempted to capture this

historic event – I believe that the last time the Jacksons were in Britain was when they performed the Victory tour back in 1984. Jermaine then sang Rock With You followed by Show You the Way to Go. During this performance, Marlon had sections of the audience compete against each other as to who was loudest. Lovely One from the album Triumph came straight after.

Moving

There was an interlude during which the projector screen showed footage of the family’s musical journey from Gary, Indiana – a loud cheer went up when a closeup of Michael appeared removing his aviator sunglasses during the Victory tour segment. As the historical footage continued, the

brothers seated themselves and reminisced about the good old days while launching into Looking Through the Windows, moving in sync towards the end. Time Waits for No-One swiftly followed. It has to be said that the musicians interpreted the original recordings beautifully and made the sounds very authentic. A rendition by Jermaine featuring the lyrics “you pushed me away” was next on the list then a song End the War came.

Entertaining

The most poignant moment for me during the whole event was when the brothers sang I Wanna see You Again, arms outstretched to a stunning picture of Michael in all his dazzling beauty, taken during the shooting of the Liberian Girl video. The auditorium cheered. Then Jermaine sang Gone Too Soon in tribute to his brother while family photos of Michael were displayed. It was touching yet heartbreaking at the same time.

Marlon dedicated the show to Katie, a young girl who had turned 11 today with a round of applause from the audience. He then thanked his brothers one by one for making the tour happen as they had been working on different projects around the world – Jermaine had been in the Middle East, Jackie in Hawaii, Tito working on a car somewhere. I Want You Back swiftly followed with the brothers performing as they had done on the Ed Sullivan Show back in 1969. There was a jam session shortly afterwards when the musicians were acknowledged for their contribution followed by more trips down memory lane. The whole evening was thoroughly entertaining though personally I would have liked to have seen more effects for the price of my £50 ticket! But I had been in the presence of living legends with Michael’s spirit and for me that was an absolute dream fulfilled.

Bullet To The Head (15)**** Starring Sylvester Stallone, Sung Kang, Jason Momoa, Sarah Shahi, and Christian Slater Directed by Walter Hill

T

his action film based on Alexis Nolent's French graphic novel ‘Du Plomb Dans La Tete’ is a very violent affair, and is at times morally reprehensible and a guilty pleasure! This is Sylvester Stallone’s most entertaining movie in years and marks a great entertaining comeback from director Walter Hill. Hill, now 71, is one of the great action directors, and his best movies include The Warriors, Southern Comfort and Eddie Murphy’s debut film, 48 Hrs. He’s also been responsible as a producer on the Alien franchise and the TV western series, Deadwood. BTTH, his first film for the big screen in over a decade, is extremely professional and consistently watchable. In terms of slick editing and narrative energy, younger directors can take a lesson or two from this legend. Stallone is Jimmy Bobo, a muscle-bound hit-man, who teams up with a Korean-

American cop, played by Sung Kang to track down the crooks who murdered their respective partners. You may think, (Yawn!) another mis-matched buddy-buddy movie, with the naive but morally upstanding young cop, the moral centre of the movie but definitely not its star, consistently outsmarted by his older, less scrupulous amigo. The combo works well, with some great one-liners coming from Stallone. Words, play second fiddle to the action. When the principal bad guy embarks on a lengthy speech of self-justification near the movies end, Stallone snarls “Are we gonna fight or are you gonna try and bore me to death?” Despite the one-liners, Italian screenwriter Alessandro Camon won’t win prizes for originality, and one-time star Christian Slater, playing a sleazy lawyer who might as well have “Kill me” tattooed on his forehead , well, has to deliver several unspeakable lines of crass crap. When he, like almost everyone else in the movie, ends up modelling a bullet wound in the middle of his forehead, it almost

ne man still reluctant to hand in his sweatstained, bloodied vest is John McClane! And he’s back in the fifth episode of the franchise, but this is no longer blue-collar man trying to do the right thing; it’s more about an elderly person rediscovering his mojo through mass murder. But seriously, it’s deplorable, but it’s a macho a vision of old age that looks enjoyable. Bruce Willis is charismatic in his most iconic screen persona, the car chases and explosions are spectacular, and it’s good to see after all this time the bad guys still haven’t learned to shoot straight. The largely incomprehensible plot has McClane heading for Russia, where his son Jack (Aussie actor Jai Courtney) is on trial for murder. So far, the script may not be strong on Russian judicial process is that Jack is in the dock with a political prisoner (Sebastian Koch) for totally different crimes. Those crazy Ruskies! The reason they have to be in

court simultaneously is pure narrative convenience. They have to escape together, (doh!) then embark on THE most destructive car chase in movie history. It’s beyond a joke as hundreds of vehicles are cheerfully trashed here, and the fate of their occupants breezily ignored. Even before McClane, (the Senior one) knows who the bad guys are or why people are shooting each other, the old boy has started stealing motors, terrorising civilians and demolishing much of Russia’s capital. Later, he spends quality time with his son, in between dodging bullets and jumping off tall buildings without bothering to discover if there’s a soft landing. The two men bond over their shared foreign policy objective. “Kill all the scumbags,” McClane shouts to his son, before adding “You got something better to do?” Earlier Die Hard scripts had moments of wit. A scape goat must be found for this film. The man responsible is Skip Woods, who also

wrote the screenplays for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Swordfish, Hitman, and The A-Team. Hollywood should now ‘Skip’ Woods!! And director John Moore’s track record doesn’t bode well either ...from Behind Enemy Lines through to Max Payne just doesn’t inspire confidence. As Russia is reduced to rubble, you will have plenty of time to ponder the absence of the police or even the Russian equivalent of the AA! Eventually, the action moves on to Chernobyl, the good guys turn out to be bad, and the bad guys even worse but it makes not much of a difference. The movie’s stupid idea of how to overcome nuclear radiation wouldn’t even convince my 11 year-old. It’s sad for me to say, after 90 minutes, this movie is dumb, and is nowhere near the quality of the first three Die Hards. If you’re in the mood for silly preposterous action and massive explosions, you’re in the element of escapist entertainment.

Sam Mendes Returning for James Bond 24?

I

ranks as a mercy killing. The film takes me back to the heyday of Stallone, Willis and Schwarzenegger in the 80s. Without doubt, it is stupendously violent, with more people shot in the face than in any film I can remember, (why this film was granted a 15 certificate is beyond belief) but the action moves along at a fine clip, and there’s a great choreographed climactic axe-fight. Mr Hill is even keen to show as much gore as possible, egged on by producer Joel Silver, who gave us the Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and The Matrix series. The level of bloodshed echoes the style of Sam Peckinpah, but Walter Hill owns this film. The movie is not about its preposterous silly plot, which makes a Jackie Chan movie look like The King’s Speech. Despite it’s flaws the film is about the rivalry between the two central characters’ moral codes. Like Martin Scorsese, Hill was long fascinated by the conflict between public and private morality. Like its main protagonist, BTTH is beefy and aggressive, but not as brainless as it looks.

Starring Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch. Directed by John Moore

t's long been rumored that Skyfall director Sam Mendes may return behind the camera for the 24th James Bond film. Mendes had never done a sequel, or had he ever done an action movie before Skyfall, and that turned out pretty well making it the seventh biggest-grossing film of all time AND the highest-grossing James Bond film to date. But will he return? Recent reports say that Mendes is "75 per cent of the way towards doing it." This is not a confirmation of his return for the film. As for now, it’s just a good rumor. Mendes was at first reluctant to return because screenwriter John Logan was planning a two-part story that would have been shot back-to-back. If the rumors are true, it’s now

no longer the case and that Bond 24 and 25 will now be stand-alone movies. Mendes' involvement with the film was confirmed a few months ago when Skyfall cowriter Robert Wade mentioned that Mendes and Logan have already come up with a story for the next film. However, if he signs back on, it’s unlikely he’ll meet the previously reported 2014 release date for Bond 24. Mendes is currently at work on a stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and then he’ll be directing King Lear at the National Theatre next January. With the way Mendes handled Skyfall, I’d personally be able to wait until 2015 if it meant seeing a greater Bond film. Skyfall is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Hitchcock (12A)***

I Wreck It Ralph (PG)*** Starring John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch Directed by Rich Moore

T

he latest animated movie from Pixar. Whoops! My mistake...er, from Disney. Funny, because it’s executiveproduced by John Lasseter, the man who brought us The Incredibles, Toy Story and plenty of other Pixar greats as chief creative officer of both companies. Wreck-it Ralph can rival those classic films in terms of spectacular visuals and imagination. Many over 40s are going to find it very noisy! There’s also a sentimental streak which is very ‘Disney-ish’ but it slows down in the second half and the soppy stuff may ingratiate itself with a female audience. Brilliantly voiced by John C. Reilly, Ralph is a massive, hugefisted “bad-guy” from an ancient, 8-bit arcade game called “Fix-It Felix Jr.” Gaming fans will recognise he’s the human equivalent

of the gorilla in Donkey Kong. Ralph feels miffed that the other characters in his game don’t appreciate his talent for destruction, and that only goody-goody Felix Jr. who repairs the building that Ralph tears down - wins medals. After the arcade closes for the night, Ralph goes to an Alcoholics Anonymous-type encounter group with other “bad guy” arcade-game characters, and together they moan about feeling under appreciated. Ralph decides to do something and smuggles himself into a more technically advanced, shoot-‘emup game in which all-American heroes led by a superwoman officer destroy to giant Cy-bugs in a terrifying sci-fi world. From there, Ralph escapes to Sugar Rush, a brightly coloured race game aimed at smaller children, where he meets an annoying little girl, Vanellope von

Schweetz. This Japanese anime world may appear cosy and brightly coloured but it contains its own dangers, as Ralph soon finds out. The screenplay is inspired for the first forty minutes, but making room for racing and sentiment makes the second half of the movie drag. It’s the first 45 minutes that give the film the status of a minor classic; the second half, which has the free-wheeling loopiness of a road movie on acid. Another problem is that the script fails to think through the gaming aspects, and doesn’t integrate the human player enough. Wreck-It Ralph is witty, ingenious and entertaining, a technical and creative breakthrough on a par with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? And that movie is 25 years old.

own game. The story's called 'The Long, Bad Night.' He beats the wrong guy in a game and bad stuff happens to him." ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ will be presented in 3D when it's released, and Rodriguez says it will blow our minds. "We're really playing with stuff because that's a very two dimensional world and to see that stylization in 3D, it'll blow people's minds. 3D hasn't been used like this yet." In the sequel, Dwight (originally played by Clive Owen) is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches

his life go straight to hell. Chronologically, this story takes place prior to the first Sin City story “The Big Fat Kill” and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face. The film weaves together two of Frank Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town's most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants. Much like the original, the sequel carries a star studded ensemble which includes original and new cast members and is currently in production.

’ve already seen one biopic about Alfred Hitchcock on screen, the BBC/HBO film, ‘The Girl’ shown on television last Christmas, and I’ve been waiting for this big screen biopic with Anthony Hopkins with anticipation. 1959 ... ‘Hitch’ and his wife, Alma Reville (Mirren) remortgaged their house in order to make the film version of Robert Bloch's ‘Psycho’, a book the director believes in so much he purchases every copy, making it unavailable to the public. Bloch's famous story was loosely based on by the notorious murderer Ed Gein (played by a sinister Michael Wincott), whom we see dispatching his brother in the film’s pre-credits sequence. Hitch has a major struggle with the studio over his decision to make the film prompting him to finance the film himself, and along the way, there are censorship arguments and his suspicion that his wife Alma may be having an affair with another writer. ‘Psycho’ was a major turning point in Hitch's career, and while he would only complete a handful of films thereafter, his legend would continue to grow. I remember reading about him wielding a knife filming the famous shower scene, seeing it depicted is still deeply unsettling, especially as it's one of a number of times where I would think Hopkins slips into

Starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Michael Wincott Directed by Sacha Gervasi

Lecter mode. Hopkins does an admirable job and is better than Toby Jones turn in The Girl. The star of this film is Helen Mirren, giving Hitchcock’s wife the gravitas she deserved, as Hitch's rock and inspiration. The fictional subplot of the affair is just a way to show his jealous side. The swipes at Anthony Perkins' private life (played by a brilliant James D'Arcy, (“you may call me Hitch, hold the cock”) are just too cheap. The fantasy sequences

of Hitch conversing with Gein doesn’t play well and is out of place outside the aforementioned prologue, and the unmistakable Danny Elfman score is greatly overshadowed once you hear Bernard Herrmann's famous strings cut in. A slight revealing biopic about the great man, along with an entertaining look at the making of a classic film, and as director Gervasi's mainstream feature debut, this is a step in the right direction.

"Bruce is back, so you'll be seeing him." He also spoke about newcomer Jospeh Gordon-Levitt's character and story in the film. "It's a new character. fter a month of waiting, the world had it’s first glimpse at the next generation console from Sony. Well, at least they would have had a glimpse at it, had the console itself actually been shown at all during the conference! The dual camera, quad microphone PlayStation 4 Eye will be used for facial recognition login, as well as being able to grasp the

players full 3D position among a host of other cool uses. We were also instead treated to the first look at the new controller, featuring integrated light bar (although this will not power the PlayStation Move), as well as a touch-sensitive area on the centre of the device. Gone are the old start and select buttons, moved instead to the top of the controller, now labelled as Options and a new button “Share”. This is one of the major things the PS4 is touting, the ability to share your recent accomplishments easily and quickly. There will be constant recording of your gaming, as well as the option to be streaming to various livestream accounts. Besides the hardware, a number of launch titles were shown or mentioned, including InFamous : Second Son, Killzone 4 and Watch Dogs. The latter of these looks amazing, like a hybrid of Assassins Creed and GTA3 + hacking! Keep a lookout for any more PS4 information coming in the next few months, but we’re not expecting to see a release date much before Christmas time this year.

Turtle Beach : Ear Force Sierra

T

he Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 branded Turtle Beach Ear Force Sierra headset is a pretty intimidating accessory. From its masses of wires, to it’s large touch-sensitive Control Unit, this is a beast of a headset, but is it worth its whopping £250 price tag? Wearing this headset is wonderful. While it may feel a bit weighty, extended use is easy with no aches or pains. The padded earcups and headband make for a positively comfortable experience, something that could only be improved by taking

away the wires themselves. The mix of leather and plastic, highlighted with orange is a rather im-

pressively stylish, with the Black Ops 2 logo prominently on each earcup. The Control Unit has many features, allowing you to tweak every option of the headset on the fly, from enabling surround sound to morphing your voice.

My only concern with the headset was the microphone, compared to many cheaper headsets, the recording quality was severely lacking, leaving me imitating a small man in a box for the majority of my testing. I’m pretty sure that with enough tweaking both on the computer as well as via the Control Unit, I could have fixed my issues, but again for the price paid, I’d have liked a

slightly better experience as standard. I primarily tested this headset on the PC, however it does come with numerous extra wires and extension cables to connect it to both the PS3 and the Xbox 360. While I found the headset to be impressive, I would have to seriously consider my options before splashing out over £200 for the Sierra. Also, unless you’re a Black Ops 2 fan, you’re stuck with the branding of a game you don’t have/ like. All in all it’s a solid choice for a headset, but think carefully about your other options! 8/10

Strike Suit Zero

I

f you were entranced by Freelancer, the Kickstarter-funded space fighter “Strike Suit Zero” may be a nice throwback to nostalgia, albeit with a bit of Japanese-influenced Mecha thrown in for good measure.

With stunning static backgrounds, including devastated planets, supernovas and earthesque planets, the art direction in the game is amazing. Control is via either keyboard/mouse or controller, with my own personal preference being keyboard

and mouse, as it allows you slightly more control when it comes to targeting.

In the early missions, you’re trying to earn reinstatement back to your old position, so you’re taken along with some routine ops, giving you a chance to learn the controls of your ship. Missiles, rockets, lasers and guns are all available to you, with more unlockable through completion. Eventually you’re given access to the titular “Strike Suit” allowing you to kick some space butt all the easier, although I think I preferred the game style without

access to it!

For £15 I think you could do far worse than Strike Suit Zero, and for a non triple A title, it’s really good. This isn’t a game that will keep you hooked for hours, more a pick up and play away a half hour or so here and there, but it’s definitely worth a look. 7/10

us Williams, businessman, entrepreneur and broadcaster left a massive void both here and abroad after his recent passing. He was one of the first generation Caribbean’s to set up here in Britain, making his name creating many business community and arts ventures in and around his adopted Birmingham, thus making a significant contribution to the growth of the city’s economy, especially during the 1970s and 80s. A founding father and former Chair of the Birmingham International Carnival, he also served as Chair of the St. Kitts/Nevis National Carnival from 2005 to 2010. Returning to his native St. Kitts, his thriving business ventures included setting up the nationwide; Radio One, 94.1FM, as well as his successful pursuit of the Basseterre Harbour redevelopment project, with a number of parties from the UK. St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas joined the mourning

of Cecil Edward Cainwright Williams saying: “He served as Chairman of the National Carnival Committee for several years, was committed to responsible broadcasting with Radio One, and always greeted you with a smile and quick comment to make you laugh,” His funeral, in Birmingham, was representative of the stature of Gus, with some of the most prominent figures, from both here and abroad, present at the New

Testament Church of God, which was addressed by Bishop Melvyn Brooks. Leading figures making their presence felt included his nephew, Karl George MBE, director of Andrews KBS Limited, multibusiness owner and director, Tony Sealy OBE, West Midlands Deputy Police Commissioner Cllr. hildren have been showering their mother’s with gifts for generations. Like most things, trends exist in the traditional giving of gifts has shifted over time. It is interesting to see how looking back over only 50 years, the traditional gifts have changed. For example in the 1940’s it was common to give “ Mothers Day Cakes” as a tasty treat on their special day. The 1950’s mother is now a sought after look with photography companies offering a polka-dot pin up photo shoot for an incredible day experience. During this time, commercial television was born with card companies making themselves a household name. The 50’s era of the perfect homemaker tended to yield modern day kitchen gifts were commonplace. In the flower-powered 1960’s the rise of discount buying providing affordable goods to all consumers began to spring up, as inexpensive present giving such as an engraved keepsakes was the norm. Mums are taken out to spend their special day at an eat out restaurant during the 70’s. Since then restaurants have completely capitalized on this, a trend which has carried crossgeneration.

Often

The sky was endless for the Mothers days gift of the 1980’s. With the rise of catalogues a kaleidoscope of gifts were easily available at this time. At this point flowers, jewellery and dinners out have carried to become the staple gift idea for this event. With the digital boom in the 1990’s, we seen the successful creation of internet retail businesses, online purchases became effortless and guaranteed to be on time for the mother’s special day. Also, the entrance of “e-cards” was added to the industry’s product-line. With electronic gadgets entering the mainstream, mum’s may be given CD’s, DVD’s or even weekend getaways. Clearly, present trends have changed in a short time but the sentiment is still at heart. With technology increasing in pace, Mothers day gifts will move with it.

taying Cool, offer 26 rooms in the iconic Rotunda for you to book and stay in. On the face of it, it seems like a great place to stay the night, but are they any good?

Whats on offer.

£140 a night, 4 Star, sleeps 1-2. I stayed in the “Mini” on the dizzying heights of the 19th floor. There are other rooms which are larger: the Clubman, the Maxi, and the spacious Roadster Penthouse on the top floor with its own open air balcony. Stepping inside the Rotunda was almost an intimidating experience. A vast, sparsely inhabited lobby welcomes you and leads you to the central core of the building, which features multicoloured, motion detecting lights on each floor. well furnished PoggenPohl kitchen (which I was informed is a really posh German brand). The kitchen even had an electric juicer and oranges, alongside a whole host of other complementary items. Their website warns that the floor of the bathroom tends to get wet after a shower, and true to form I had submerged my one after my shower. Staying Cool have their own range of toiletries to use which were also welcome.

Who stays there?

F The “Mini” itself is very stylish, with the décor paying homage to the sixites heritage of the Rotunda itself. The thing that grabs my attention first though is the stunning views of Birmingham. Four floor-to-ceiling windows provide sumptuous panoramic views, and they even slide completely open. The view at night is an attraction in itself. I found myself gazing at the snow-topped buildings and the snaking orange lights, observing the unceasing activity of the city.

no surprise then that it finds itself very popular with the international tourist market. Simon Russell, Staying Cool’s receptionist at the Rotunda elaborated on the diverse customers, “the clientèle we receive are mixed, we get locals on business trips and people who come for the events (like the NEC clothes show) and fairs in Birmingham. We are also very popular with internationals, who are attracted by the 5 star rating and because they are able to cook for themselves and bring their own stuff in.”

The added extras included free of charge in the wedge shaped room are certainly impressive. Unlike many hotels, where you are eager to leave before you have even unpacked, this is more like a home away from home. The rooms include a glorious array of gadgets; an Apple iMac, Sky TV, a Sony soundsystem, a king-size memory foam mattress, free wifi and a very

raditionally, we don’t think of Mothers day to be celebrated in other countries however this recognition for all our mothers do is spreading across the water. Aside from being celebrated on different days in places like America, we’re seeing mothers day catching globally. In India, Mothers day (celebrated on second Sunday of May) is a very new idea which spans about a decade in this nation. With a country rich in festivals and celebrations already, it’s a wonderful achievement for this foreign festival to make its presence felt in the vastly diverse culture of India.

Celebrations

The location of the Rotunda is a real strong point of the rooms. Its impossible to miss the cylindrical tower, and as it’s on the doorstep of the Bullring its essentially next door to the heartbeat of the city. Its

or a while I have been quite curious of the function of the Rotunda, it’s a building I seem to walk by all the time on the way to New Street station and yet I really was not sure what was inside. Loved and hated, no matter how you judge the aesthetic of the building, the Rotunda is embossed with the history of Birmingham. A versatile building it housed a variety of different functions of both business and pleasure.. The resemblance to stacked coins is convenient considering that it was also a Lloyd’s bank, complete with safes and vaults. The iconic building deserves our respect, and much love should go the associates who

saved the rotunda from the brink of inhalation in the 90s, for we now have a new chapter for the extraordinary building The landmark has graced the skyline since the 1960s the original architect James Roberts, designed the building as an office block when it open in 1965. He lived on the top floor for many years, while its base housed a bank, shops and leisure outlets. Saved from demolition, it was given a grade 2 listing in 2000. it remained empty for a few years until Urban Splash approached the owners in 2004. Working with Glenn Howells architects, they redeveloped the rotunda in a way that paid homage to its history.

and the overall experience was very good. Great views, a good sleep and a stylishly decorated apartment on the doorstep of the bullring all blended together for a memorable evening. Although slightly more expensive that a standard hotel room, The Rotunda has got to be the first choice

This even reaches as far as Mexico, where the concept has been around since early 1920’s. In Mexico, the focus of the event is rejoicing in the greatness of motherhood. The day begins with children waking up early in the morning, singing heart warming songs dedicated to their mothers. Apart from giving the conventional flowers, the older children give more expensive gifts while the younger get creative with hand made presents. In South Africa, the main focus is of celebrating profusely for their mothers love and care. People wear red or pink carnations for those who are living and white to remember those we are not with us any more. This day is taken to celebrate not just mothers: but grandmothers, aunties just women in general. Globalization has in part made this predominantly Western event filter through to make its presence felt around the globe. The internet revolution is key, making information from other cultures easily accessible than ever. Perhaps other countries have been longing for a day like this. I believe this day is celebrated irrespective of geographical location and will eventually become a global event (and rightly so!).

eteran DJ Albert Taylor got people dancing at a party to celebrate National Dignity Action Day in Sandwell. Albert, 87, played the music at Goldfield Court, a development of extra care apartments in the heart of West Bromwich. He provided entertainment throughout the day for some 200 people, with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Before coming into extra care housing, he regularly DJ’d for the Greets Green Partnership, a scheme to improve the health,

well-being and quality of life of residents in the West Bromwich district, and at tea dances at local community centres. Sandwell Council and social enterprise Housing 21's extra care housing organised the event as part of celebrations across the country, led by the National Dignity Council. Other entertainment included a sing well choir, a barber shop choir and dancers from Disability Day Opportunities Performing Arts Group. Bingo and exercise sessions were held in a side room. Active Arts, part of the council’s

adult social care department, created a dignity tree especially for the event. People could add a pledge on how they would uphold dignity or say how they would like to be treated. Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for adult social care Councllor Ann Jaron said: “We wanted to provide a truly memorable day for those receiving care and to promote the need for everyone to uphold people's rights to dignity."

Research links pesticides to diabetes

S

cientist, in a recent groundbreaking study, has made a link between type 2 diabetes and pesticides as a possible explanation of its increase in the past few years. Published in the Environmental Research journal, the study by a group of researchers from the University of Granada in Spain found people with higher concentrations of DDE (from the pesticide DDT), are four times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. It is said that chemical found in the common pesticide Lindano increases the risk of developing the diabetes. The research team examined the concentrations of specific chemicals in the fat tissue of 386 patients

at San Cecilio hospital, Granada, and Santa Ana hospital in Motril, Spain. Researcher, Juan Pedro Arrebola explained: "The mechanism of action by which chemicals increase the risk of diabetes is still unknown. However, some researchers have suggested that [pesticides] might cause an immunological response when they penetrate estrogen receptors in tissues associated with the metabolism of sugars."

Arrebola detailed that human fat tissue "can store potentially harmful substances, such as persistent organic pollutants" in pesticides and other waste consumed via food or absorbed through the skin, air, or water. The outcomes revealed a direct link between the presence of these chemicals in the body and the development of type 2 diabetes. The link was seen across all ages, genders, and body weights. The authors also pointed out that because these chemicals are concentrated in body fat, it may be an explanation for why overweight people have a higher risk of developing diabetes. By 2030, approximately 4.4 percent of the global population is expected to develop diabetes.

Power naps increase cognitive function

leep is one of the most important things our bodies need, yet often what we cut out when we get caught up burning the candle both ends. If you find yourself fighting fatigue during the day, try taking a power nap. Research shows that a short 20-minute snooze is all it takes to lower stress hormone levels and charge your stamina. It has been proven to be beneficial to your heart, hormonal maintenance and overall cell repair. According to NHS Online Health Sector Life Coach Jayne Morris, napping also enables your brain to clear thought clutter and boost creativity. She says: “Be Creative. Naps can be taken almost anytime, any place if you get creative… keep a pillow under your desk, blanket in your car, find a space at the back of a yoga or Pilates class and drop off for a while during the class. Our primal instincts can prevent

us taking a nap if we are sensitive sleepers and don’t feel relaxed in our environment. Do what you can to reduce distractions, like locking door, use earplugs, wear an eye mask, or close the blinds. Release any inner gremlins tell-

ing you that you are ‘lazy’ for napping. Taking a nap will reenergize you far more than a cup of tea or coffee can.” According to a study by NASA taking a nap can increase cognitive function by up to 40%.

ith the success of the recent 2012 Olympics, Team GB have achieved more than a stack of medals. Inspiring a generation and raising the profile of many sports, most Olympians have earned their right to be the role models of the future. Many individuals also deserve to be recognised for their less known academic achievements.

N

Like Alistair Brownlee, who brought home a gold medal from London 2012, he completed a degree in physiology and sport from the University of Leeds. Of course, a champion sportsman this may be an obvious choice unlike the more unusual Samantha Murray, who won a silver medal for the pentathlon whilst studying a degree in French and politics at the University of Bath. Building on this, Michael Rock (who’s event is 100m butterfly and also has a grade 7 in piano) is studying for a degree in law at the University of Manchester . Like Ed McKeever, canoe sprinter, who has interestingly completed his degree in accountancy and finance and will become an ACCA accountant. The resilience that some of our finest Olympians show is outstanding. A perfect example is Andrew Baddeley who ran with a cardiogram due to an irregular heartbeat at London 2012 (his second Olympics). He achieved a first class honours degree in aerospace engineering from University of Cambridge. The attitude and commitment that the sportsmen and women of this country displayed during the games last year was inspiring. But its clear by only the few successes mentioned here that some of our countries finest are applying their ‘Olympian attitude’ to their academic studies. This begs the question : Is being an Olympian a mindset ?

‘World Culture Week’ celebrated in Walsall S tudents in the West Midlands recently took part in “World Culture Week” to celebrate the global mix of students who attend the college. It was a chance for students at Walsall College, from diverse backgrounds, to come together and learn about important issues such as different cultures, citizenship, human rights, disability awareness, sexuality, religion and beliefs. It also provided an oppor-

tunity to increase awareness of local, national and international organisationations who are working with specific groups and cultures. During the week, Fashion and Art & Design students collaborated to create a display of different costumes from different cultures across the world, including Japan, Scotland and Spain, while ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) student hosted a number of stalls, with music, quizzes, foods and displays.

Throughout the week seminars explored vital issues from around the world, where representatives from organisations including Samarian’s Purse, Fair Trade and SOS Children’s Village visited the collage to give presentations on the works they do. As well as voicing their opinions on what ‘culture’ means to them, students also had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of fun activities organised by the Student’s Union and Learning Re-

sources Centre, Director of ‘Students Journey,’ June Morrow, said: “World Culture Week at Walsall College was a great way to highlight important issues from around the world and provide the students with a chance to learn. It was also a chance for students to expand on their cultural horizons alongside their normal college week.”

Student Stereotypes : Latte’s not Lager

T

he university stereotype which politicians and parents so passionately speak about is less prevalent in society today. Queuing for a latte; the hum of a dozen laptops sets the scene, with a mass of muttering engaged in academic debate. Perception of the first year at university as a fun ground is growing more absent. Even the mythical 9am optional lectures see students fighting for their seats. The idea that all campuses are a drinking mine field of traffic cones, is finally (and accurately) being put to rest: But why now? Whether this is due to the piling pressure to obtain a better degree (when competing for jobs) or the growing figures for youth unemployment shocking them into action. Today’s undergraduates appear to have a seriousness that their predecessors

would now be surprised to see, with it no longer fashionable to stay in bed hungover with so much work to do. Or perhaps the stereotype of university being the binge drinking capital is more student savvy ? Overall in the UK, there is an increasing number of people choosing not to drink. Either for religious reasons or simply because people don’t like it. This student evolution can hardly be ignored. As the £9,000-a-year undergraduates are developing into a different stereotype: the touch-typing , latte guzzling, grade obsessed generation- can we argue that this is anything but a positive change ?

l Last call for the alcohol fuelled University student stereotype?

ewman University in Birmingham is highly recognised for providing world class teaching qualifications and are now paving the way to cultural success. With University classrooms growing in eclecticism and more international students choosing the UK as an educational hotspot, the importance of developing staff and students’ cultural capabilities is more prominent now than ever before. Interestingly “home” students also offer a fantastic mix of race, language and culture enriching the educational experience. Clearly things are changing within Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) in the UK. Newman

have identified that our definition and understanding of the context of learning and teaching needs to broaden. In times gone by, there has been a focus on students of high fee paying in UK universities. The seminar is intended to offer to all parties involved the opportunity for a shared learning experience, stimulating healthy debate revolving around developing mutual confidence approaching new or different cultures to increase intercultural knowledge and competencies. The team are working towards a Higher Education initiative change. The aptly named “ Home and Away” project will be utilised as a catalyst in creating a workshop extensively exploring the roles of both students and staff in their cultural abilities/awareness. As education is becoming more globalised and students who can offer up many more exciting languages’ to HEI’s Newman University are taking a step in the right direction. The effort around organising this event is commendable and clearly many institutions will follow the lead this Birmingham based university has set.

tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.

It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.

Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.

Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.

A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”

deprived areas

T

he increase in academies across the country has been a catalyst for much chatter. As of March 2011 , over 195 “outstanding” schools were converted to academies. But with the focus on only the higher achieving schools: Should lower achieving schools become academies ? If schools in deprived areas were to become academies, it could increase accessibility to education and increase the students’ grades helping them to make their career path a possibility. Budget cuts in April 2012 threatened traditional education as we know it . Schools and colleges have much more competition, with static charges not budging - converting to an academy can be a seductive concept. With the decision being final, there isn’t a possibility to revert back once an academy status has been recognised so the choice isn’t made lightly. Although the institution itself would lose much autonomy, can we really put a price on our future education? The benefits seem to be extensive, with a usual cash injection into the college or school providing our teachers with the much deserved wages; it can be seen why many institutions are adopting this approach for their students. It would be interesting to see if Educational bodies took failing schools under their wings rather than the outstanding, what effect this may have in regards to the deprived socio-economic areas. Possibilities for inner city students to grow personally and academically could kindle the next Dyson or Darwin.

n inspiring new venture has opened in the heart of the midlands, aiming to encourage women to get involved in business. The women’s enterprise hub, birthed by Birmingham City Council and our own partners South and City College is giving vital support and training to women who are interested in , or already engaged in a business venture. The hub, opened by Sir Albert Bore, hopes to address the under representation of women who own their own business. Of course the support is available for all women

and this exciting project offers particular focus to women of ethnicity including Bangladeshi and Pakistani women. This enterprise is generously offered by South and City College located in their Fusion centre in the heart of Digbeth. Women will be able to get involved in a range of services, such as pre-start up and growth workshops and plenty of guidance and support. Sir Albert said: “This enterprise is all about giving women equal access…which will really help redress the under -representation of women in business”. In addition to this Mike Hopkins, head

of South and City College commented that “ …We have worked to create courses that will not only give these women excellent skills in fashion, but the ability to turn it into successful business ventures”. With a passion for fashion, its clear that all women involved will have access to the tools to make a success of their businesses. All the hard work by Birmingham City Council and South and City College will be recognised as contributors to establishing equality and contribute to stimulating economic growth in the UK.

he University experience has been wrapped in tradition for generations. The popular misconception of the carefree, badly behaving socialites could be a thing of the past. With the rapid rise in distant learning and Open University courses: Is the classroom a thing of the past ? Distance learning essentially allows education to be highly accessible with the ability to develop skills or gain a qualification from the comfort of your own sofa. This student-lead approach allows learners the choice of what information they access, where and from who it will be acquired. From the chalkboard to tablet,

technology allows tutorials and classes to be conducted via the internet without any attendance requirements. With the educational budget tightening, online courses give institutions the space to cut spending on building’s which saves a small fortune. The battleground for jobs is more fierce than ever, prospective students are looking for something to give them an edge in the workplace. At a glance, online education is more economical being cheaper and tends to eradicate much of the worry, anxiety and fear around starting higher education. So isn’t it time to cross the party animal persona off the list ?

verybody is aware of the “normal” degrees that are flooding our job markets. With many people looking for an edge, we found some of the most weird and wonderful qualifications available within the UK.

A quick search yields a range of crazy courses on offer; but are they worth paying £9,000 a year for ? We decided on a top 5 which we found most unusual. Most students enjoy the odd drink, but at number 5 the brewing and distillation degree at Heriotwat University, Edinburgh takes it to a new level. Surprisingly, this is a sought after qualification by employers for individuals with a keen interest in the science of brewing necessary, this is certainly not one for the light-weights. Although foundation degrees are a relatively new qualification, at number 4 the University of Birmingham are offering their three

year Golf studies course. Considered not to be one of the most exciting games, the course covers golf psychology and financial performance. Even at Master’s level we found a chilling surprise at number 3 in Coventry University. Who offer their MSc in Parapsychology, which explores the existence of ghosts and haunted houses (eerie). Coming towards the end, a degree in surfing is by far one of the coolest we could find with no better place to study than at Plymouth. Admittedly, studying wave dynamics

sounds somewhat dry but we can only imagine field trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Topping our list is the seemingly ‘normal’ Education studies at Durham University. With one huge twist, offering a magical module : Harry Potter and the age of illusion . With brooms and wands not a course requirement, this takes an interesting look at Harry Potter in culture, education and society. It could certainly be argued that the above qualifications are certainly a niche, but will we see these disappearing from our universities ?

market opportunities ahead. Nevis is fortunate to have someone of Mark's caliber and experience to lead the industry in the capacity of Minister of Tourism.” Minister Brantley, an attorney by profession, was educated at the University of West Indies and at Oxford, hit the ground running, meeting officially with the Nevis

Tourism Authority (NTA) team, the Hotel and Tourism Association and other key tourism stakeholders, laying out his vision for the industry and stakeholders' roles and functions in executing his mission. He said: "I am honored and excited to lead Nevis' tourism industry, which is vitally important to the people of Nevis and to the economy of our small island destination. It is therefore critically important for Nevis to be differentiated from the mass market tourism that

is now dominant in the Caribbean by providing the visitor with an authentic experience that has real value. It is the intention of our administration to foster tactical alliances between the government, the private sector and our local communities so there are opportunities for Nevisian entrepreneurs with small and medium enterprises, as well as international investors to prosper.” Minister Brantley has been a Senator in the Nevis Island Assembly for the Concerned Citizens Movement and is the Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament.

he new F1 season returns to our screens once more on the 17th of March, bringing joy to millions of fans who are eager to see if Sebastian Vettel can win once again, or if Alonso, Button and Hamilton can muster a title challenge and scoop the prize themselves. In the run up to the launch, each team have revealed the new vehi-

cles they will be driving in the new season and we take a look at the changes below. Red Bull’s vehicle for the 2013 season, the RB9, will attempt to clinch the championship for the fourth time on the bounce. It was revealed at the Red Bull base in Milton Keynes, showing the public for the first time the splashes of purple on top of their standard red yellow and blue colour scheme. The car represents “Evolution rather than Revolution” according to Adrian Newey, their chief designer. Considering they won the title last year, the few amount

of changes are unsurprising. Red Bull are not concerned that other teams’ claim to have made dramatic changes either, with Newey remarking that he has not seen anything revolutionary elsewhere. One will have to wait to see if Maclaren and Ferrari’s new vehicles this season have closed the gap. Red Bull seem to be set the greatest challenge by Ferrari whose new car, the F138, also features a new splashes of colour. And of course, the start of this season saw the move of Lewis Hamilton from Maclaren to Mercedes. They have launched their

car called the W04, something that made Hamilton lose sleep in excitement. According to Brawn, the W04 is “a clear step forward in design and detail sophistication over its predecessor.” Speaking to Sky Sports News after testing the vehicle he said “I’m pretty pleased, but we have to see how testing goes over the next few days to get our first snap shot of the car.” Lookout for the first race in Melborne, Australia on the 17th of March for it is set to be an intriguing spectacle.

Sports Nutrition at manic prices L

ooking to bulk up and increase your strength? Maybe you want to lose weight or sculpt your body. Well, if you're looking for reasonably priced products that can help you achieve all these things then Body Mania is the answer. The Hulk-green coloured store opened on Slade Road in Erdington at the start of this year and they have enjoyed a successful start. It specialises in offering sports nutrition products that help you to develop strength and improve your results from exercise. It has an extensive range of mass gainers, proteins, pre and post workout boosters, fat burners, hydration, weight loss and nutritional supplements, all at wholesale prices. Body Mania is a family run business owned by ex-restaurateur Mohammed Jahangir who has lived in the area for a great deal of his life. Coerced into setting up this new business by his energetic sons who have a real passion for sports nutrition, Mohammed has taken a liking to the slower pace of the shop and its popularity. “My eldest son was into this kind of thing [body building] and he still is, and my youngest is into boxing.” said Mohammed. “I retired from the restaurant and just wanted to take it easy so we ended up going for this and we are really pleased with it. I've always been part of the local community and I want that to continue.” Body Mania is all about delivering serious results to their customers, whether you are looking to increase mass and muscle, or if you are looking to improve your health and well being. Recognising that high street suppliers of sports nutrition put a hefty mark-up on their products, it is at the core of Mohammed's philosophy to make sports nutrition products affordable to everyone in the local community and beyond. “What we do with our prices is that we keep the discount from our supplier and sell them to our customers at wholesale prices. We don't put any mark up ourselves, so we find that people are impressed with our prices and the variety we have.”

High Quality

All of the stock at the Erdington based store is sourced from high quality suppliers to guarantee that customers get quality and results. One of the major suppliers to Body Mania is world renowned sports nutrition company USN, which claim to be the market leaders due to their extensive range of muscle building and weight loss products that are supported by a

strong scientific foundation. “USN, our main supplier, were very pleased with the shop and they want to do more business, they even promised that they would bring down the athletes and body-builders to sign t-shirts, take photographs and give out free samples at our store.” “We also stock PhD, a local Midlands based firm for whey protein and diet whey, MuscleTech and we are going to get more and more stuff as we select more suppliers.” Body Mania offers a new type of ser-

hind the counter also give free consultation on the best type of products for your agenda, whether you're a expert in the field or a complete novice . “If someone comes in and do not know what they want, my son can help them and advise them on what they need and even offer samples.” Mohammed said. Body Mania is contemplating opening an Ebay store, and Mohammed is looking forward to the launch of the website in the near future. “Our website will be up and running soon and people will be able to mail order. We are also on Facebook too, so feel free to message us.” Don't forget to keep a look out for the website, www.bodymania.co.uk, when it launches soon.

The young, team shorn of many of its established English Premier League and other top European league superstars proved a dominant force throughout the tournament and were deserved of their 1-0 win, their first in the competition since 1994. The winning goal came from Sunday Mba,

who plays for Nigerian Premier League club Warri Wolves. Coach Keshi said: "Winning this was mainly for my nation. My dream was to make all Nigerians happy, and to construct a great Nigerian team. In truth, we are not there yet, it's still in process. To represent Africa in Brazil at the Confederations Cup is an honour for Nigeria."

y encouraging young people to develop holistically, CUL Academy, the independent school in the heart of Birmingham, are offering the opportunity to develop and maximise their potential by giving students the opportunity to gain Level-1 in ice skating at the Leisurebox, in Birmingham. The students who are excited to learn new skills get the chance to explore education in a forward thinking and innovative environment where their confidence can improve dramatically, their skills develop and their ability to skate goes up somewhat also. In focusing on their individual needs, the city-based academy will support their students throughout their education and progression into Further Education and employment.
