t was a year to remember, having had the cream of Jamaican and American athletes in the city, pre London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics, and a stream of international medal-winning stars coming thereafter as Birmingham rolled out the red carpet for the very best that sports had to offer its citizens. And that was just the tip of what was a memorable ‘iceberg’ of events for the city, as it makes its mark as a truly world-class international venue. With the addition of the return to its celestial home for the Birmingham International Carnival, then the Malcolm Marshall Memorial Cricket Cup in Handsworth Park, the annual German Market, Caribbean Food Festival, St. Patricks and St. Georges Day celebrations, Eid Mela, Divali, Vaisakhi, BASS Festival, Chinese New Year, the Conservative Conference, the Yonex International Badminton Tournament, Sky Ride and the Birmingham Half Marathon, all now permanent fixtures on the calendar, it’s praise indeed for the work carried out by Birmingham City Council Assistant Director for Sport and Events, Steve Hollingworth.

an all-time high. In respect of international sports and cultural events, no one has done more than Hollingworth to establish the city as an all-time great venue, for whatever your taste. “Far more people than ever before are coming into Birmingham Airport and the knock-on effect is massive. International federations and organisations want to see that Birmingham cares and, without doubt, we’ve shown the world that we do. Steve has secured BBC coverage of the athletics Diamond League and GB & NI Trials at the Alexander Stadium and the indoor Grand Prix meets, at the NIA, until 2020, so, for sports and cultural events, there’s no better place to visit than Birmingham.

West Midlands men bored of shopping?

I

t is said that the average West Midlands man lasts just 24 minutes before boredom sets in at the shops when hitting the High Street with their partner. Research from Quidco1 found that West Midlands men’s patience wears thin when their partners take too long making a purchasing decision, or when stores or shopping centres get too crowded or chaotic. The study found that 33% of local men dragged along on shopping expeditions get so fed up, that they end up abandoning the trip altogether and going home early.

/PhoenixNewsUK and

However, reluctant male shoppers in the region can be cajoled into banishing their boredom with a trip to the pub – according to the survey – as 35% admit to enjoying shopping more if there is the promise of a pint at the end. Quidco Managing Director, Andy Oldham, commented: “Shopping has long been thought of as a pastime more popular with the female population, and the research appears to agree. With the average shopping trip in West Midlands lasting 2 hours, it’s hardly surprising that 14% of male residents would prefer to make their purchases online.”

Eid-ul-Fitr

E

id-ul-Fitr, the Mulsim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, is upon us this month, as followers around the world celebrate with special prayers, traditional food, new clothes and gifts to the poor or needy. Many Muslims in the UK will be celebrating Eid ul-Fitr (also known just as Eid) on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of the month-long fast and the

start of a feast that could last up to three days. The Islamic holiday involves waking up early and praying, either at an outdoor prayer ground or a Mosque, dressed in their finest clothes whilst adorning their homes with lights and other decorations. Food, gifts and greeting cards are exchanged and children receive presents as Eid ul-Fitr is a joyous occasion with an underlying purpose to praise God and give thanks to him.

Children’s designs on slowing down traffic

T

wo children from Woodmansterne Primary School, in Lambeth, have seen road signs that they designed being attached to lamp posts outside their school. Year four pupil Laura Kryger (left) and year one pupil Elisha Thomas Ingram showed off their designs before the signs were put up outside their school on Stockport Road, in Streatham. They won a competition run by the school to design road signs to remind drivers to slow down after the school and a number of residents in the Streatham Vale area reported speeding and rat running on several streets near the school.

The effort is part of Lambeth Council’s Cleaner and Greener Streets campaign which highlights everything we’re doing to make the borough a beautiful place sustainable place for everyone to enjoy. Councillor Imogen Walker, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “We were delighted to support the children in this initiative. We have produced several signs from the girls’ two prizewinning designs and they will be displayed around the Streatham Vale and Streatham Common areas to remind drivers to drive carefully and slow down.”

he Midnight Oil summit which was held at the Symphony Hall and the Adrian Boult Hall-Birmingham Conservatoire and is one of the United Kingdom's fastest growing faith based non- denominational BME youth gatherings. The Midnight Oil revival brought together more than 3000 young people across racial, cultural and denominational divides. However, on Saturday 20th July 2013, the hopes of director of Midnight Oil Seth Pinnock were somewhat shattered after the attendance dropped significantly after disturbances by protesters of the EDL. Seth, speaking with journalist Travis Chase said that the police, who were on high alert in surrounding areas instructed patrons who were on their way to the event, not to enter the Symphony Hall and that they must return to 'safer places'. Seth told Chase that several attendees of the Midnight Oil were threateningly chased away from the scene by members of the EDL who were gathered in front of Symphony Hall. On the day in question, three of Phoenix's reporters attempted to get inside Symphony Hall, but were told by a police rank on duty that we should get out of the area and that it was too dangerous to even come near Symphony Hall. Seth added that persons who were already inside of the Adrian Boult Hall Conservatoire from 8am to 3pm were told they could not leave, and were said to have been locked in during the violent uproar outside. To add insult to injury, patrons were told that they must pay an hourly rate after the time they were scheduled to be in the Conservatoire.

Midnight Oil disrupted despite successful start by Travis Chase This comes on the heels of the attendees locked in the Conservatoire for hours without food or water. In light of the protest, Seth is

hopeful that the event will be compensated by the Birmingham City Council. He accuses the council of failing to inform organisers of Midnight Oil, that the protest was slated for that date. However, when I contacted Mahendra Chauhan of the City Centre management he told me that he was unable to comment on the issue and that he was not aware of the issues. Chauhan concluded that he cannot comment on the issue until the organisers give him official notice.' Once the organisers of Midnight Oil give me official notice then a public announcement will be made, as of now, I am in no position to comment' he said. Further, Seth said that

the Midnight Oil administration contacted the City Council before the event in a bid to find out if there were any other activities happening around Symphony Hall during activities of Midnight Oil. ‘When I called them, and asked them about any other activities, happening at the same time as my events, the council told me that they are not allowed to release such information and that the police instructed them not to release such' Seth la-

mented. Seth, aged 23 and deemed the youngest person to ever book the Symphony Hall for an event stated on his website that: "Midnight Oil Summit aimed to show young people that Christianity is exciting and relevant and has something to say about all areas of their lives." Seth shared, "We have brought together some of the UK's leading Christian speakers, teachers and artists to inspire, empower and motivate the young people and adults who attended but is saddened to see the disruption on Saturday's event. It is hoped that Seth will get some form of compensation due to this unfortunate set back which resulted through no fault of his own. It is clear that the numbers that were expected did not materialise as it was said that coach loads arriving from London were told to return home.

WIN! So you want to be wealthy? Dave is offering one lucky a reader a wrap pack! All you have to do is answer this simple question:

How much does the Wrap usually cost? Email your answers to competitions@ thephoenixnewspaper. com along with your name, address and contact number for your chance to win. Closing date is 31st August at 23:59. There is no cash alternative.Winners will be picked the week after the closing date.

D

o you want to be financially free? In the UK, only 3% are defined by the government as wealthy. Their definition of wealthy is anyone who owns a company, partnership or works as a sole trader and makes £60k profit each year. It also applies to those of us who have a net estate value of £250k or more. More of us would be truly on our way to financial freedom if we paid our mortgage off early. Your mortgage is usually the single largest obstacle that stops you from amassing greater wealth. The word ‘mortgage’ is a French legal term that translates as ‘death pledge’. It means that if you repay the mortgage in the standard way it will last for 25 years or more. (in some cases until death) For some people today that means working beyond ‘retirement’ in order to pay off the debt. If you want to pay off your mortgage early do this:

1. Ask your mortgage company for the total interest payable over the term of the mortgage. 2. Ask them to provide you a quote based on doubling the mortgage payments each month. 3. Note how many years your mortgage term has reduced in comparison to the current term. A 25 year capital and interest mortgage can be reduced to as little as 7 years If you find yourself procrastinating over this, have a look at this example computed a few minutes ago:

Capital & Repayment Mortgage - £100,000

Term 25 years Interest rate 6% Repayments - £644 pm Total repayable over term £193,290 Total interest payable £93,290 If you overpaid your mortgage

by £700.00 every month the results would be: Term 7 years Total repayable over 7 years – £124,951 Total interest payable £24,951 You would save £63,339 in interest. Think about how you could put that money to better use. The reason why the repayment term is dramatically reduced by more than two thirds is because capital and repayment mortgages are front-loaded with interest. This means you pay the bulk of the interest in the first 17 to 20 years. So, what we are ultimately talking about here is finding ways to get into a position where you can make those overpayments every month. Create a list of all your outgoings. Do you have credit cards, loans or other debts? Finding the extra funds to double-up on your payments is going to call for some sacrifice

on your part, and only you can decide whether this short-term pain is worth the sacrifice in exchange for long-term financial freedom. If you feel like you are ready for this, why not try the snowball method? You start by paying off your smallest debt first, and then tackling the next smallest debt after that and so on until you are left with just your mortgage. So, if you have more than one credit card debt, pay the minimum allowed on those cards and pay the rest of what you would normally pay on those toward the smallest debt. A few quick results will give you motivation and encouragement to keep going. If you would like a free debt elimination plan to help you calculate which debt to tackle first and how long each debt would take, email me at adrian@agw. uk.com or visit www.agw. uk.com and submit your contact details there, or you can call me on 07786 631 695.

LEGAL SERVICES - IMMIGRATION

with Jennifer Housen

The Phoenix – August 2013

IMMIGRATION UPDATE – SUMMER 2013

W

hilst we have been quiet in the column for the past month, that has not been true of immigration law generally. The Government has introduced a range of new measures which will greatly affect immigration applications being made. The Court has also had an input in certain changes and I have tried to summarise the more important changes and their effect.

£14,000 per annum, the Court’s view was that the income threshold was disproportionate and unjustified. The judge gave guidelines for consideration and criticised the lack of discretion available. This judgment will offer hope to thousands who simply found the £18,600 threshold difficult and onerous.

Right of Appeal for Family Visitors Abolished

Derivative Residence Card

In July 2012, EEA nationals received certain rights under new amendment Regulations that were introduced. The new laws allow for certain persons to be able to get a right to live in Britain in circumstances, for example, where they have a child who is an EEA national or caring for an EEA national relative. What has been interesting recently, however, is that the application form for this new Derivative Residence Card also provides that persons who are caring for British citizens can also apply for this Residence Card. This is a refreshing and welcoming change although there are drawbacks with the extent of

the rights persons have. It means, therefore, that where it was difficult before to regularise status if an overstayer was caring for a relative or other person in the UK as primary carer, with the new Derivative Residence card, he/ she can now legalise his/her stay in Britain.

New Hope for Low Earners Filing for Partners

An important judgment was

handed down on 5 July 2013 in the case of MM v SSHD (2013) which gives relief and hope to families especially spouses and partners filing for their non-UK spouse/partner, where the £18,600 threshold has been proving a difficulty. The Court has reviewed the requirement and, considering the UK minimum wage of £12,850, with most government workers making about £13,000-

From 25 June 2013, the right to appeal against refusal for a family visitor visa has been abolished. Prior to that date, where close family was refused a visa, an appeal could be made and the applicant submit further information to support their claim rather than make a fresh application. Now, any person who is refused a visitor visa, regardless of their relationship with the Sponsor in the UK, is not allowed a right of appeal, rather, they must submit a new application. This is really a ‘double edged’ sword, as given there was a charge of £140 for an appeal, with a wait of some six (6) months for a hearing, then persons applying for a six month visitor visa will

before a visitor’s visa is issued. In the event the applicant does not return to his/her home country, the bond would be forfeited. There have been angry reactions from the countries targeted, and there has been a subsequent suggestion that the bond may be lowered. However, it does appear that it will be introduced. Of course, if it does come on stream, then it is likely that it will extend to other countries and, therefore, even if your country is not currently on the list, then keep reading our page to see if it does eventually.

Landlords to be “Immigration Police”

The Government had recently announced that it would require all landlords to check all prospective tenants’ immigration status before allowing them to rent flats and to only rent to persons who are legally in the UK. Failure to carry out the checks would result in a huge fine. After some ‘backlash’, that the majority of private landlords, the government seemed to have diluted its position, but it is highly unlikely that that will be the last we hear of the matter. Watch this space.

be somewhat better off as a new application would be at the same fee of approximately £90, and the wait remains approximately 15 days. For persons making applications for 2, 5 and 10 year visas, however, the cost will be more prohibitive in making a new application. Thus, it is extremely important that persons try to ‘get it right first time’ by seeking appropriate advice before applying.

Visa ‘Security Bond’ to be introduced

In June 2013 The Government announced that it was planning to introduce ‘security bonds’ for visitors coming to the UK from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ghana which it considers are ‘high risk’ countries. The intention is that from around October 2013, persons from these countries coming to visit the UK will have to pay a bond of £3,000

Will your Will stand the test?

BLS

he legal profession is calling for the mandatory regulation of will writing after it emerged that one in five wills contain basic errors which could, in some cases, render them invalid. Martin Allsopp, president of Birmingham Law Society, advises caution when choosing a firm to draw up this important document. Drawing up a will has long been the preserve of solicitors. Around two thirds of wills are still drawn up by the profession. However, a growing number are

Office Hours: Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm Saturday & Sunday Closed

now drafted by unregulated willwriters. The Legal Services Board (LSB), which oversees the legal industry in England and Wales, has launched a campaign to regulate these firms after its own research found 20 per cent of the wills that they prepared were faulty. So what are the consequences of a badly drawn-up will? If your will is invalid then your estate will not pass as you intended it to. Beneficiaries you wanted to inherit may lose out on their legacy, with others receiving the spoils. Your estate may end up

Education Law Child Care Law Harassment Law

liable for tax that it could have avoided. Meanwhile, your intended beneficiaries will end up having to invest time, cost and emotion in attempting to ensure your wishes are honoured. Despite the pitfalls of drawing up a will, any individual or company can, at present, set up a will writing service without any legal expertise or qualifications. Regrettably, they do not offer the same level of protection for consumers as solicitors. Solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (“SRA”) to ensure they deliver the best service to their clients.

Additional client protection offered by solicitors is professional indemnity insurance and access to the SRA Compensation Fund. As a consumer, you should have the confidence that your will is being drawn up by a trained and competent individual who understands the law and has the appropriate insurance. The LSB’s campaign has the backing of many groups, including The Law Society. In the meantime, if you are planning to have a will drawn up, exercise caution when choosing a provider.

Call for first aid education in schools snubbed by Government

A

s the British Red Cross and many other organisations are asking for the Government to make life-saving skills part of core subjects like Science and PE, details of the new statutory school’s curriculum completely fails to make any mention of first aid education, a move which flies in the face of calls for the contrary. With the UK lagging behind most of Europe in terms of the number of young people and students trained in first aid, studies show that only 20 per cent

eople across the Midlands can now pay privately to have their unwanted body hair or tattoos removed at a regional centre of NHS excellence. The Birmingham Regional Skin Laser Centre at City Hospital has one of the widest selections of skin laser equipment in Europe and is now able to offer private laser hair removal and tattoo removal treatment to people from across the city and beyond. Laser tattoo removal is the most effective way of removing unwanted tattoos, helping to fade and remove amateur, professional, cosmetic and traumatic tattoos.

Treatment inadequate for depression?

espite one third of patients suffering from depression failing to respond at all to current treatment, with a further third only experiencing a partial improvement of symptoms, sales of drugs for depression generated an estimated $5.6bn in the US, Japan and major European markets in 2012, according to research carried out by analysts at Datamonitor Healthcare. This suggests that a substantial market opportunity exists for drug developers, especially in the management of treatment-resistant depression. The leading business intel-

ligence provider, Datamonitor Healthcare surveyed physicians on the treatment of depression and prescribing habits across the US, Japan and Europe, the results of which are

collated in its recent depression reports. Lead analyst, Daniel Chancellor, said: “Our research has highlighted shortcomings in

the current treatment of depression patients, with existing treatments either lacking in antidepressant efficacy or bearing intolerable side effects for many patients. Drug developers must focus on improving the speed of onset of efficacy, eliminating typical antidepressant side effects and providing symptom control for the one-third of patients with treatment-resistant depression.” A new drug displaying any of these three characteristics promises to be well received by patients and has the potential to generate annual sales in excess of $1bn, despite the numerous treatment options already available.”

of secondary school students in England and Wales have learned first aid in the classroom; and just 4 per cent of them would step up in aid of someone needing first aid assistance, according to an ICM poll. This is only a sliver of a wider base of evidence which shows why the UK needs to build a generation of lifesavers by teaching them first aid from primary school level. Findings show 91% of students would like to learn first aid in schools; making it all the more unfortunate that government has

decided to ignore this essential discussion. With emergencies likely to happen anywhere, only seven per cent of people in the UK can correctly recall first aid advice and feel confident and willing to give first aid. So, simple skills learned in just a few minutes – like what do if someone becomes unconscious – can save lives. The decision by government to ignore BRC calls will rob the nation of future life savers.

ashion students at Walsall College staged their dazzling annual Catwalk Show to showcase their wealth of creative talents. The atrium area of the college’s Wisemore Campus was transformed with an elevated catwalk and come alive for the show, which was an artistic collaboration between Fashion, Hair and Beauty, Performing Arts, Dance and Music students. During the show, a range of stunning collections that Fashion students have worked hard on throughout the year was unveiled with themes including pop art, wonderland and 1950s skirts in tribute to the fact that the college first opened in 1953 and is this year celebrating its 60th birthday. The catwalk models had their hair, make-up and body art styled by Hair and Beauty students, while the evening was hosted by Performing Arts students, include live performances by Music students and filmed by Media students. Christine Taylor, Curriculum Manager for Fashion at Walsall College commented: “The Catwalk Show featured designs created by all levels of Fashion students showcasing their skills and artistry. This year we’ve seen a number of students gain external recognition for their talents, from being named as a runner up at the NEC Clothes Show’s Young Designer of the Year competition, to having their designs manufactured for retail launches with well-known brands. The Catwalk Show was a great finale to what has been a very successful year.”

Parisian designer adds French chic to H&M

H

&M has announced its autumn collaboration with Parisian designer Isabel Marant. With her effortless style, Isabel has created a widely influential and successful take on Paris chic, mixing urban attitude, boho elegance and rock ‘n’ roll spirit. She delivers a genuine French allure for H&M and will create a wardrobe of musthave pieces inspired by her signature style. Available from November, in stores worldwide and online, the collection features clothing and accessories for women and teenagers. Isabel will also, for the first time, create a collection for men. “I am flattered by this collaboration: H&M works with the

best designers and this invitation is an exciting honour. I aim at creating something real, that

women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: you dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy. My take on fashion is all about personality," says Isabel Marant. Margareta van den Bosch, Creative Advisor at H&M, said: “We are excited to have Isabel Marant as a guest designer at H&M. The way she mixes different elements in her collections, creating a style that is effortless and urban, makes her very contemporary. She has a fantastic eye for ethnic detail and the rare ability to create something that people really want to wear. We are sure the H&M customers will be enthusiastic about this collection”

Pacific Rim (12A)**** F

or his latest blockbuster movie, Guillermo del Toro has turned for inspiration to Japanese Kaiju movies like Godzilla and filmmakers such as Mamoru Oshii to fashion an almost insanely ambitious tale of giant robots taking on mythical sea creatures. It's an exquisite and intricate mix of his own creations and those that pay homage to sci-fi and monster movie history. The focus is firmly on fun and furious, magnificent battle sequenc-

es which start in the depths of the ocean and reach all the way into space. As far as massive scale action and immersive worlds go del Toro achieves an astonishing feat visually. There are, though, problems with del Toro’s decision in not casting a big name in the lead role, as unfortunately Charlie Hunnam, who plays Raleigh, co-pilot of Gipsy Danger, the oldest functioning Jaeger Mark3, is not up to the job and is instead out-acted by the supporting thesps.

Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi all make a much better fist of getting their jowls round the hammy dialogue. Del Toro has a thing for stiff-upper-lipped British scientists and casts Burn Gorman in this role in a doubleact with the maverick American scientist played by Day. It’s very silly, but Day is on form as a super fan of Kaiju and you can certainly feel del Toro’s passion through this character. The designs are stunning, but

Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Dieg Klattenhoff, Charlie Day Directed by Guillermo del Toro

the movie is so large in scale that occasionally it ends up drowning in its own excesses. Nor do the attempts to supply the characters with the usual Screenwriting 101 father/son/ daughter issues help, as so many threads are crammed in it’s hard to invest in any in particular. Some of the comical one-liners are pretty cheesy too, but thanks to Charlie Day and Ron Perlman these become something to look forward to in between the booming battle sequences. The best of del Toro’s previ-

ous films had a knack of tapping into history to become something more than spectacle. It's perhaps unfair to expect Pacific Rim to do the same. Instead, del Toro achieves what he’s set out to do, bringing his inventions to life with all the gusto of a mad scientist. There’s originality here and no end of eye candy. Nonetheless, it's hard to escape the feeling that del Toro should be doing something more demanding with his gargantuan talent.

X-Men DOFP Teaser!

D James Bond 24 may be named ‘Devil May Care’

T

he title of the 24th film in the 'James Bond' series will reportedly be 'Devil May Care', after the novel of the same name written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of 007's creator Ian Fleming's birth. The sequel to last year's 'Skyfall' will see Daniel Craig return as the fictional British spy, while director Sam Mendes has confirmed his return to the series. According to newspaper reports, the new film will take its name from Sebastian Faulks' 2008 novel which was written to

commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bond creator Ian Fleming's birth. The story for the book features 007 battling evil chemist Dr Julius Gorner, who is taking aim at the UK. After 'Skyfall' made £700 million worldwide - including being the highest grossing film ever in the UK, many fans were hoping to see Mendes and Craig's partnership continued on future films, and the director is glad to be back. He recently admitted: ''I am very much looking forward to taking up the reins again and to

working with Daniel Craig and producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time.'' His future and commitment to the 24th film in the long-running series was uncertain because of his theatre work, but he spoke of his gratitude at being able to return. He added: ''I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24.''

irector Bryan Singer has teased us with another image from X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, featuring none other than Nicholas Hoult and Hugh Jackman rocking some ‘70’s brown. From this image, it appears Hank McCoy has found some way of controlling his Beast

alter-ego. Either that or he’s just trying to steal some of Jackman’s limelight by standing around in similar looking garbs. I don’t blame him to be honest. The new film sees the young members of Xavier’s X-Men receive a terrifying message from the future about the mutant-killing Sentinels and horrific detention camps. It is up to the 1970’s

X-Men to avert this fate, with some handy help from some old faces that engage in some form of time-travel. It sounds like an incredible amount to deal with, but hopefully Bryan Singer can pull it altogether into a film that does the beloved comic story justice. X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is out July 17th, 2014.

irmingham took a step closer to securing its status as a major force in UK jazz music with the announcement that the Town Hall and Symphony Hall will significantly broaden the number of opportunities for young jazz musicians in the city. Through its Jazzlines and Education & Community teams grants totaling £175,000 from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The Leverhulme Trust, spread over three years will enable THSH to increase its capacity to discover, develop and help promote young jazz artists via a range of projects and initiatives. So week 2 of Johns Jokes I complained to the editor as I went from Page 10 to Page 13. I was then told that I was on the right hand corner so my picture will be the first thing looked at. I do apologise for all the extra accidents caused due to my picture. GADGETS WITH DANIEL RILEY

utting its way through the air as you stylishly barrel roll off to the side, the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is super fun, easy to pickup, but devilishly difficult to master.

Droning on? Not with this Quadrocopter!

Most drones are way out of everybody’s price range, and at £280 the AR Drone 2.0 isn’t exactly cheap, but at least you can own a quadrocopter and be the envy of all of your friends. The 2.0 boasts a 720p HD camera on the front, working alongside a downward facing camera, which can either record to a USB stick mounted inside the drone, or stream straight back to your control device (iOS or Android) with recording available as well as taking still shots. Flight time is restrictive, with each hour long charge giving close to 15 minutes flying, however if you’ve got the money to get one of these, a couple of spare batteries are probably on the shopping list as well. The drone is equipped with 2 hulls, one made from expanded polypropylene, protecting the blades

for indoor use, and a more streamlined hull covering the internals but leaving the blades exposed for outdoor use. The drone does produce a lot of downdraft, so if you’re thinking of using it indoors, consider 2 things. 1 – Make sure you’ve got enough space, it’s quite a large piece of kit, and unless you’re rather well off, most rooms will

be restrictive. 2 – If you are lucky enough to have a large enough indoor space at your disposal, make sure loose paper, cards and small animals are held down securely. The camera allows for astonishingly smooth video (once you’ve got used to the controls), and flying around is both fun and will attract a number of people to you to find out more about the drone. The really difficult part of controlling a flying machine, taking off and landing, are thankfully and expertly handled by a handy take off button on the app. This really is an extravagant purchase, but if you are in the market for a Quadrocopter, especially one with all of the features that the AR Drone 2.0 from Parrot packs in, then you can stop looking elsewhere, the AR Drone 2.0 is the technology you’re looking for.

O

n the back of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, comes an iOS game set around the same time as events in Human Revolution. How will it fair considering the limitations of mobile (app) gaming? Keeping the same black and golden colour scheme from Human Revolution, the art design keeps the feel of DE:HR, but squished into a small and at times feeling quite cluttered screen. I tested The Fall on an

iPhone 5, and found the HuD taking up a lot of the viewable area, bearing in mind you’re using the touchscreen to move as well. The Fall brings the choice system along, allowing you to decide on different courses of action, however the most effective actions, at least from a control point of view, are those which call for stealth and tactics rather than an all guns blazing approach. The combat feels clunky, es-

pecially when trying to kill moving targets with any precision., and this really detracted from the whole experience for me, especially as The Fall has done so well in other areas trying to create a console game for iOS. If you enjoyed Human Revolution, and like the Deus Ex world, you’ll probably a great deal of enjoyment from this game, assuming you can wrestle with the controls. If you’re not a fan already, the controls may well get to you far before you get into the game.

tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.

It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.

Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.

Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.

A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”

Students will be given the chance to work with staff at the magazine to develop their own features which will be featured either in The Phoenix or in our sister publication, Street Cred.

With a diverse range of students, it is hoped that the students will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the paper and help further promote it within the local community we serve.

The Phoenix Managing Director commented “I am excited to be working with the students of Hereward College to not only help them develop themselves but also to develop this paper. The skills that these students have already shown to us make me confident that big things will be happening in the near future. Watch this space!”

usic Box Day Care Limited is purpose-built to provide the highest standard of childcare and education for children and their parents in and around the north-west of Birmingham and the wider boundaries. Based in a secure and fun learning environment within the 3B Business Village in Handsworth, they aim to create a loving, safe and stimulating setting for children from 3 months, through to 5 years old. As a nursery with neighbour-

Great fun is always the order of the day, both indoors and out, with activities in abundance and first-class facilities always avail-

able. After being made readily welcomed, and left for the first time, children with any disability or specific needs will have provisions set out for each and every one of them, working to the requirements of the 1993 Education Act and Special Education Needs code of Practice (2001). 'Each One Teach One Together We Reach One'

l Prime Minister Denzil Llewellyn Douglas with LJ

T

he importance of keeping contact with our homeland is very important to the diaspora community and this was shared and welcomed by the community of the diaspora St Kitts and/Nevis up and down the country. The St Kitts/Nevis And Friends Association (Birmingham) welcomed their Prime Minister Denzil Llewellyn Douglas who has been the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis since July 1995 to a population of just over 50,000. He leads the Saint Kitts and Nevis Labour Party and is the longest serving national leader. Joining him on the visit to Birmingham BCA (Birmingham Community Association Jenkins Street, Small Heath, home to many diaspora groups) was his Deputy Prime Minister Dr Asim Martin and Dr Norgen Wilson Special Advisor to Anti-Crime Unit under the remit of the Government. The evening was chaired by Charlene Daniel-James, and I was invited along to hear what the diaspora community wanted to share with their ministers. Like most diaspora communities there were concerns that really affect people here in the UK as well as those in St Kitts/Nevis, as the broker discussions about things that can be done to help the growth of the Islands. First on the agenda was 'The Vote', the Prime Minister was keen to impress upon the diaspora group that their vote does count back home. However all who want to vote,

must be registered to do so; as there is a specific form that must be collected on the return to Islands as these 'CANNOT' be sent out or 'COLLECTED' by anyone other than the person intending to vote. The large turn out of people from the diaspora completely understood the Prime Ministers points and were happy with the clarification of the process as they want the right to use their vote to affect change.

him of house calls he had made in their time of need at anytime and without charge as they thanked him publicly for his generosity which they said they would never forget. Points were also raised about

reminding the people of the St Kitts/Nevis diaspora they have a part to play by lobbying their Local Council here in UK to take this forward to Government to address the points on why the charges to the Caribbean are so

the expense of the fares that people of the diaspora have to pay to return home for a holiday as they feel the cost is too high (and so say all the other diaspora communities). The Prime Minister addressed the point on the cost of flights by

high. Then it came to Dr Wilson to address the points on crime and the prison service. He gave credit that since the introduction of the new Chief of Police he has been very active and there are been a slight decrease in crime.

Demands

There were demands made from the group about cleaning up some of the attraction points around the islands especially those that are on or near the main roads that can be seen by tourist as they travel around. One person of the diaspora said 'this is a must' in order to give a better representation of their Island and restoring it to it's former state. As the meeting progressed more than one person had kind words for the Prime Minister who was formally a Health Doctor, many remembered being treated by him; and reminded

He acknowledged that the conditions of the prisons were not acceptable, neither currently the size of the prison and also the amount of people in the prison. The Prison was built for 59 prisoners, and now has over 280 prisoners in St Kitts Prison and 43 in Nevis Prison Farm which also include young offenders which the government acknowledges is not appropriate. Dr Wilson was able to report that they a have recently completed the building of a Juvenile Detention/ Remand centre for young offenders, this will be able to host 20 males and 10 females and this will open in September once the staff training has been completed. He also reported that land has been cleared in the country for a new prison to be built by 2015 if all goes to plan.

Each One Teach One

So as the title says 'Each one Teach one.......' here is one of Birmingham's proudest Kittitians who is sure that through educating the prisoners and using the Ministry to reach them, this can

make changes to their lives for the better. Before he set off for St Kitts/ Nevis Mr Simeon Clarke in his capacity of Prison Ministry Regional Director spoke to me at Newstyle Radio about his role and what he does with donations kindly given by people in the community. Items donated for this trip were toiletries, Stationary, Bibles, Flannels, Reading Glasses, Books, Underwear, etc to give to prisoners who have no family to purchase these items for them. Simeon donated paint to the prison so that they would be able to paint some of the walls in the prison to improve these areas. Simeon was please to report that there are a few things happening in the prison now to help to educate some of the prisoners, but more support is still needed to be able to help the prisoners progress. On Whit Monday the prison superintendent Mr Dorset allowed the prisoners to have a Graduation Day for those who took their exam in Maths, English and Accountancy. They also had activities where prisoners took part by, singing, acting, football, dominoes and reading poetry. The day was viewed as a total success. Simeon is still collecting items to send to St Kitts/Nevis such as, toiletries stationary, soaps or monetary donations to send over to support inmates, anyone wishing to donate to the barrel Prison Ministry send to St Kitts/Nevis please contact Simeon Clarke contact at be_st@hotmail.co.uk or on 07904142942

Just getting bigger and better

F

ast becoming the UK’s number one reggae music festival, this year’s Simmer Down Festival certainly lived up to its billing with a day of entertainment that, again, was bigger and better than ever before. It was a wonderful showcase of music, dance and all round family entertainment that The Drum Arts/Theatre Centre so often does. And with Simmer Down, no one does it better. In this, its fourth consecutive year in Handsworth Park, the annual celebration of the city’s rich heritage and cultural diversity proved a massive tribute to the reggae heritage in Birmingham and the incredible influence it has worldwide. With headline acts including Jamaican multi-award winning super star, Half Pint, supported by Stikki Tantafari, plus the likes of Black Symbol, Fatman, Asha B, Divas of Soul, Sic’Nis 1Eye, Xova, The Voice’s LB Robinson, Lee Alexander, Oya Batcada and many

more from home and abroad, this open air music festival is one that will remain high on Birmingham’s annual calendar of events, come what may. Mukhtar Dar, Director of Arts and Marketing at The Drum, said: “In just over 4 years ‘Simmer Down’ has grown to become the biggest reggae festival in the UK paying tribute to Birmingham’s reggae artists both past and present. Set within the beautiful surroundings of Handsworth Park, this year Simmer Down At its heart is the principle of celebrating the rich cultural heritage of our diverse communities and the contributions that we have made as an international city of culture. Attracted over 12,000 people, with families travelling from all over the region and further afield, Simmer Down is now one Birmingham’s leading festivals and it is certainly one of the most diverse festivals in the UK.”

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

W

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons

S Adoption & Fostering Our ongoing campaign to help the children in need in our communities With support from

ince its launch 16 years ago, National Adoption Week has gone from strength to strength encouraging and inspiring people to think about whether they could give a safe, loving and permanent home to a child or children through adoption. Every year there are around 4,000 children across the UK who need to be adopted. This year’s National Adoption Week (4-10 November 2013), which is run by the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF), is appealing to people who have the space in both their hearts and their homes for a child or children who need a forever family . The charity is especially asking

why a child is placed in care. There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

people to think about whether they could parent a sibling group of children who need to stay together, children from some black minority ethnic communities, older children or a child with disabilities or complex needs. These are the children who wait longer to be adopted. BAAF knows from existing adoptive families that it can be hard work, but that the rewards are huge. Adopters come from all walks of life. You can be single, married or an unmarried couple. You can be over 40; straight or gay and you don’t need to own your own home. This is a chance to transform a child’s life for ever. Please don’t rule yourself

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

out – rule yourself in! You can also get involved this year by entering the National Adoption Week Awards. Categories for 2013 include Adoption Champion of the Year, Adoption Social Worker of the Year, Local Authority of the Year, Voluntary Adoption Agency of the Year, and BAAF Supporter of the Year. Adopted children have also been invited to enter a brand new category, Adoption Picture of the Year, in which they are asked to show the world what adoption means to them. To find out more about adoption please visit www.nationaladoptionweek.org.uk

Foster carer numbers to increase?

F

oster care agencies and organisations estimate at least another 9,000 foster families are needed in the UK to find homes for looked-after children. The figure reflects the increasing number of children who are being taken into care, as well as the need to replace the 13% of foster carers who either retire or step down every year. According to the Fostering Network, a foster carer is likely to be in their 40s or 50s, but they come from a variety of backgrounds and have a range of qualifications. Chief Executive, Robert Tapsfield, says: "They can come with no educational qualifications at all or be a university lecturer or professor. They have diverse educational backgrounds, which means they have different training needs." Anybody becoming a foster carer in England has to complete the national training, support and development standards drawn up by the former Children's Workforce Development Council. This is something

which is more likely to be completed within the first year as you need to build up some experience first." The professional qualification for foster carers is the level 3 Diploma for the Children & Young People's Workforce, an evidence-based qualification completed on the job. The Diploma is offered as an option to all foster carers recruited by the independent foster agency Core Assets. The diploma is seen as the next obvious step after a foster carer's pre and post approval training and assessment. Last year 77 carers completed the qualification and so far this year another 44 already have done so. Core Assets' Head of Learning and Development, Frank Ward, says: "The qualification isn't compulsory but we wanted to take the opportunity to move the carers on to the next level. I think it's a valuing thing." In partnership with Bath Spa University, Core Assets has also, developed two undergraduate-level Diplomas that foster carers can go on to

complete – one devoted to integrated child protection and another to disability awareness. We want to push through that glass ceiling after level 3." But not everybody believes that qualifications are necessary to be a successful foster carer. Jacqui Lawrence is Foster Care Development Consultant for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering. She says: "The level 3 diploma is a good qualification to have for fostering but it's not the be all and end all. The best qualification you have is life experience in the care of children – that is more of the starting point than having a qualification. Qualifications may make some feel that they are more able to articulate themselves better, but for others who have been foster carers for a long time, without qualifications, they can recognise themselves as professionals and they make a valuable contribution."

ccess to quality education has a significant role in preventing racism, xenophobia and other forms of discrimination, a United Nations independent expert said today. “Education has a central role in creating new values and attitudes and provides us with important tools for addressing deep-rooted discrimination and the legacy of historical injustices,” said the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, Mutuma Ruteere in his briefing to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council. Mr. Ruteere said States must ensure that school curricula contains balanced information on the contribution of minorities, migrants and other non-dominant groups, and emphasized this is particularly relevant against a background of economic and social unrest. States must also evaluate the impact of budget cuts on education at a time of economic crisis, particularly for disadvantaged minorities and groups, Mr. Ruteere said. “I have found that despite some positive initiatives, studies and findings by international and na-

ly Jamaica is expected to begin flying from Guyana to New York and Toronto in according Guyana’s Tourism Minister Irfan Ali. Ali said top airline executives advised him of their decision at a tourism exposition held recently in Toronto. “Fly Jamaica has indicated to us at the Toronto Trade and Tourism Expo that by the end of July they would start flying to New York and by mid August they will commence operations to Toronto,” he told the phoenix newspaper. Guyanese authorities said Fly Jamaica first has to get approval from the United States and Canada before they could begin flying to and from Guyana. In addition, the airline first has to finalize the lodging of a bond to help refund passengers should the carrier cease operations here. Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Zulfikar Mohammed said his agency would have to ask his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart agency to provide

Fly Jamaica for Guyana Flight Operator’s Specifications to Air Jamaica because this country does not have an inspector to perform such a task. American and Canadian au-

thorities would also have to grant approvals to Fly Jamaica before the carrier can begin serving the Toronto and New York routes to and from Georgetown.

The Guyana government earlier this month granted approval to the carrier to offer scheduled services among the three ports.

tional bodies show that persons of African descent, Roma, Dalits, indigenous peoples, migrants, to name a few, still have limited access to quality and higher education.” Mr. Ruteere also submitted a report to the Council which addresses the latest developments he has identified regarding the continuing human rights and democratic challenges posed by extremist political parties, movements and groups, including neoNazis and skinhead groups. This report examines the main areas of concern where further efforts and consistent vigilance against racist and xenophobic crimes are required. It also identifies good practices developed by States and different stakeholders.

T

he United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) is providing financial support to the Guyana Government’s agriculture diversification and export promotion drive. The organization is providing Government with funding to the tune of £1.3M or US$2M to support the Guyana Agriculture Diversification Programme (GADP.) It is expected that this investment will create over 1,000 new jobs, increase tilipia export from 1,000kg to 1,200kg a week and non-traditional agriculture exports, such as bell (sweet) pepper, hot pepper and butternut squash from 1,000kg to 1, 600kg weekly. The DFID project will work at three levels; directly with farmers to introduce new technologies and raise productivity; streamlining the paperwork

and red tape for investors and exporters; and helping to build relationships with new markets and buyers. According to High Commissioner Ayre, the programme will help Guyanese exporters maximize their potential to supply markets elsewhere in the Caribbean, in North America and in Europe. He said that, at a time when global prices for food and agriculture commodities have been rising across the board, the region has experienced substantial declines in major agriculture exports resulting in the lack in performance of the sec-

tor despite growing world demand. This programme aims to tackle that in the areas covered, he said. He said that this new ‘payment by result’ method being

employed by DFID will guarantee value for money for both UK tax payers and will assure development impact of the project in Guyana.

Finland next stage for World Rally

Believe it, it’s a Lambo

Y

ou cannot believe that Lamborghini Gallardo is about to celebrate its 10th year in production and is due to get replaced soon. The brand new Gallardo LP 570-4 ‘Squadra Corse' is actually named after Lambo's new motorsport department-the same people who look after everything from the GT3 to the Super Trofeo Championship. It’s based on the standard LP 570-4 chassis, which happens to be the 4-wheel-drive and for the gear box it’s got a robotised ‘e’ gear six speed paddle-shift auto box. It’s no surprise that the LP570-4 can do 0-62mph at a mind-blowing 3.4 seconds, while 124mph is achieved in less than 10.5 seconds and will carry on pulling all the way up to 200mph. The LP570-4 is scheduled to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September

T

he new entry into prestigious world of sports roadsters is the Lucra. Seen in ‘Fast & Furious 6,’ the green and yellow LC470 driven by one of the stars, a new model has been announced, no name yet. It’s as fabulous as it looks. With looks to give a TVR a run for its money and vents that would even make a Maserati go and hide, its sleek and sexy space-frame tubular chassis and astonishing carbon fibre bodywork makes the LC470 weigh just under a tonne, which for 600BHP gets a ludicrous and mind-blowing power-to-weight-ratio. The Lucra gets its engines from GM (General Motors) and also Mercedes AMG, with the 7 litre GM V8 from the Corvette Z06 which by itself is a remarkable piece of motor engineering and the fabulous AMG 6.2-litre V8 which they put in their mind blowing 450+ BHP C63 AMG Coupe. So, it seems that the makers are obsessed by amassing the V8 so with looks and engine to die for, the Lucra have got this one in the bag.

50 years of Porsche 911 celebrated at Silverstone Classic

A

pulse-quickening parade of more than 1,200 Porsche 911 sports cars took to the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit – a world record number – as the Silverstone Classic celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic coupe. The plan to produce a parade of 911 x 911s was almost immediately exceeded when the celebrations were announced, with registrations building hugely in the months leading up to the event. Rather than settling for the initial target, the Porsche Club GB and Silverstone Classic organisations squeezed an incredible 1,208 examples of the 911 on to a packed circuit – creating a breathtaking sight in the process. The sensational spectacle, which raised funds for the Hope for Tomorrow cancer charity, was led by a number of famous Porsche personalities as tens of thousands of fans looked on. Mark Porsche, son of 911 designer, Ferdinand Alexander ‘Butzi’ Porsche, and greatgrandson of the marque’s original founder, Ferdinand Porsche, got proceedings under way and he was joined by a number of the sports car manufacturer’s most successful racing drivers.

Former F1 driver and five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell MBE joined in the occasion, along with Richard Attwood – winner of the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche – and fellow ‘legend’ and race driver John Fitzpatrick. Porsche owners and enthusiasts made up the remainder of the colourful convoy culminating in the remarkable world record number, which spanned virtually

every possible derivative of 911. The parade comprised the most famous 911 models from past and present, including legendary Carrera, RS, RSR, GT, Speedster, Targa and Turbo variants. A number of distinctive race and rally versions of the 911 also featured in the cavalcade. “Of course, the 911 means a great deal to me as it’s my father’s big design and it will always have a special place in my

heart,” said Mark Porsche. “It’s been a family member over all the generations of the 911 series and I'm very proud to be here today to represent the Porsche family at this great event. I think that to have these 1,200 cars on track is the attention that the 911 deserves for its 50th birthday. I can’t thank the Porsche Club GB enough for making this event possible.”

fter a break over the last few weeks, the World Rally Championship returns to action in Finland. At their home rally, flying Finns Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen will be aiming to claim another victory. The Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT will also be looking to Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio to help it come away with a hatful of points from the land of 1,000 lakes. Competing in the DS3 WRC of the Abu Dhabi Citroën Total WRT, Kris Meeke and Chris Patterson are also determined to do well in their first WRC appearance this season. After passing the halfway stage of the season in Sardinia, the WRC enjoyed a holiday of just over five weeks. The championship resumes at one of the most iconic rounds of the season, Rally Finland, with its legendary jumps! Originally from Jyväskylä, the base for the rally, Mikko Hirvonen really is the local boy.

Having already competed here 11 times, winning the rally in 2009, he is now considered to be one of the event’s ‘old hands’. After making a start to the season that has fallen short of his expectations, the four-time World Championship runner-up is really determined to make a fresh start here. “There are several reasons why I would like to win my home rally,” explained Mikko. “First of all, it would be the best way of thanking the fans who have supported me throughout the year. It would also be a just reward for the team, which has made every effort possible since the start of the championship. As well as that, a win would give us a bit of momentum going into the final part of the season…” Although the surface in Finland isn’t the most naturally-suited to southern European drivers, Dani Sordo seems to be quite happy to be racing on these compressed gravel roads, where his best results are two fourth-placed finishes: “I’m really motivated for the second part of the championship, because we are about to start the series of rallies at which I feel most comfortable. In Finland, I like the fast roads and the fact that the grip is fairly consistent.”

F

ollowing the success of the ICC Champions Trophy Final, the England & Wales Cricket Board Edgbaston Stadium has been awarded an additional NatWest t20 International between England and India in 2014. Having accommodated almost 105,000 spectators across its five matches, including the Final, it was already scheduled to host England's NatWest Series ODIs against India and Sri Lanka in 2014. However, the additional match between this year's ICC Champions Trophy finalists is a wel-

come boost to local cricket fans. Colin Povey, Chief Executive of Edgbaston, said: "England have a fantastic record at Edgbaston and we're thrilled to welcome them back to Birmingham, where they'll certainly be looking to avenge their recent ICC Champions Trophy Final defeat when the they meet in this NatWest Series t20 International. The £32 million redevelopment of the stadium was designed to give the best possible cricket experience to players, spectators and officials on match days. add to their brand. Their new fully-purpose academy and health and fitness club, in West Bromwich, is everything you need in martial arts and lots more. Not only a mixed martial arts gym, you will be able to educate the body in other ways, including dance and general keep fit. There is also a fantastic educational programme providing motivational courses in Maths, English, Creative Writing and Art. Black Widow owner, Yogendra Parekh, says: “Our aim is to help students reach their full potential and ability. To make students develop physically and mentally. We want to do our bit to create the kind of impact we’ve already established at our other gym, in Birmingham. It’s about educating the mind and educating the body for a healthy all-rounder. Instil discipline, confidence, plus health and well-being from children aged 5, to the eldest of adults. We provide the best facilities to give our students the greatest opportunity to make better of themselves.”

l Rocket Man Usain Bolt makes his entrance to the Games

An anniversary to remember

I

t only seems like yesterday, but it really is a year ago since we were wallowing in the glory of London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics. That ‘Super Saturday,’ the ‘birth’ of Jonnie Peacock-the new face of international paralympics, the golden explosion at Eton Dorney, boxing historymaking at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, the treble recordbreaking ‘Lightening Bolt,’ The Queen’s ‘entrance’ into the Olympic Stadium

The memory of last year was still powerful as the London Anniversary Games did its best to recreate that unforgettable summer of 12 months ago. With Moscow the top of many athletes collective minds, we were stripped of many of last year’s stars, but the likes of Farah, Bolt-his entrance in a rocket was pure pantomime, Peacock, Weir, Ennis-Hill, Cockcroft and a fair modicum of London 2012 Gold medalists certainly did their bit to recreate theirs (and our) golden memories.
