ever one to miss a trend, the Bull in Birmingham is now attired in a red Christmas sweater adorned with all kinds of seasonal motifs, including snowmen, crackers and presents. One of the most photographed landmarks in the UK, the world-

renowned icon of the city has truly embraced the Christmas spirit following suit of the 36% of 18-29 year olds in the UK who confessed that they’ll be wearing festive jumpers on Christmas Day. He’s donned the Joey Essex style quiff, the onesie look and the Wimbledon whites and now

he’s embracing the Christmas jumper for the festive season. Tim Walley, General Manager of Bullring, who commissioned the survey, commented: “Our visitors love the bull and they’re always trying to guess what his next outfit will be; we’re sure that this rather Christmassy jumper will be a hit with our cus-

tomers.” Whilst the ever popular Bull gets ready for Christmas so does the rest of the centre with late night opening hours, which sees Bullring opening until 10pm on weekdays during the month of December.

ambeth Council has made significant strides in turning around the lives of families in the borough, working under the Government’s Troubled Families scheme. According to new figures, the council has helped 116 families in Lambeth without a working adult, where children are skipping school or members involved in crime and anti-social behaviour. The initiative, which the council has called Aspirational Lambeth Families, aims to provide intensive support to families with complex needs to get adults back into work, get children back at school, cut anti-social behaviour and youth crime.

Problems

Cllr Rachel Heywood, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “I am delighted with the progress we have made by putting this scheme in place locally. We are working closely with numerous families to break long running cycles of disadvantage and improving the lives of those most in need.” According to Government estimates there are 1,080 families in the borough needing specialist help – which is London’s second highest total. These families almost always have other longstanding problems which can lead to their children repeating the cycle of disadvantage. One estimate shows that in over a third of the families there are child protection concerns, high levels of school exclusion and youth offending.

offers nativity leave to busy parents after ‘Mumdex Report’

A

sda is answering the call of busy working parents this Christmas by offering colleagues ‘nativity leave’ to ensure they don’t miss out on their little one’s starring role

in the school play. The festive flexible working option is available to colleagues following Asda’s latest ‘Mumdex’ research, which indicated that working parents are worried about missing out on their child’s

key milestone moments due to work commitments. In face-to-face focus groups with Asda mums as part of the research, one in three sited the annual nativity play as one of the top things they feel they just can’t miss out on. The ‘Nativity Leave’ flexible working policy allows Asda colleagues planned, unpaid discretionary time off to attend their

child’s school play or to take much needed ‘me time’ outside of normal contracted holidays. Mumdex, which includes responses from 5,500 Asda mums, also revealed that traditional values are more important to mums this Christmas day than technology – with 35% planning to totally ban technology from the Christmas dinner table this year. The average family will also spend 1 hour and 20 minutes playing board games on the day itself, compared to spending just 25 minutes on social media.

Hayley Tatum, Asda's Executive People Director commented: "There's no doubt working mums have a lot on their plate at this time of year and we don’t want our colleagues to miss out on the things that are really important to them this Christmas. ‘Nativity Leave’ gives parents the opportunity to take time off for the school Christmas play or simply for some much needed family time outside of normal holidays.”

he four-letter ‘F’ word was banded about in abundance as the 23rd BBC Good Food Show Winter took centre stage at the NEC Birmingham attracting some of the biggest names in the food and drink industry for this, the biggest food event of the year. With an array of well-known brands, kitchen appliances and gadgets, a spread of the finest local and regional produce to shop from and best in live cooking demonstrations, tasting experiences and book signings took place, all under one roof. Highlights for the five day food and drink explosion included the Tesco-sponsored ‘Supertheatre,’ where visitors watched celebrity chefs like James Martin, Lisa Faulkner, Brian Turner, Natalie Coleman, Greg Wallace and The Hairy Bikers, plus Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry’s ‘Great Bake Off Village,’ as some of the favourite TV programmes came to life. Going through the mire that is ‘what to-and what not to-do, as we lead up to ‘crimbo,’ names big and small in the market did their best to entice customers ‘hard-earned’ to part company with pockets and purses alike. High Street names like M&S, Bose, Hardys and Knorr, stood side-by-side with lesser, independently run operations, locally, nationally and from all corners of the earth did their bit as preparations were in the air, as Christmas beckons on one and all.

The closing of the BBC Good Food Show Winter marked the end of the first show season for new business venture River Street Events. The Scotland, London and flagship Winter shows pulled in a remarkable total of 129,000 visitors, were backed by

High Commissioner Assamba said: “Wade is someone who is well-known and respected in his community and with his wide range of interests and contacts he can help bring Jamaican interests to this part of the UK. This does not mean I am not coming back to Birmingham, but we really need someone like Wade to support us here.” Mr. Lyn said: “This is a great honour to serve my country and

fellow Jamaicans. I am here to serve the Black community, but I will not be taking sides with anyone, only with Jamaica. I have a strong ethical business background and will use it to fulfill my role. I am going to need all of us to be each other’s keeper. We are all in this together.” His duties will include a range of tasks including dealing with passport applications. Jamaican-born Lyn (53), who holds several local directorships, is also a Warden of the Birmingham Assay Office and was recently selected to serve on the board of the Birmingham Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

ess than a week after the news broke that actor Idris Elba had taken his relationship public with make-up artist Naiyana Garth, after the pair were snapped cosying up at a recent awards ceremony, the couple are said to be expecting their first child. This would be the Luther star's second child, as he already has an 11-year-old daughter Isan from his marriage to ex-wife Dormowa Sherman. The pair, who have been dating since March, are said to be 'thrilled' by the news. A source said: "They've been together for a few months but it's really ramped up recently. They get on brilliantly and she's a real hit with his family and friends. Idris is known as a ladies’ man but he’s really not at all. He’d rather have banter at the bar than spend all night grafting on women. Although he doesn’t have to try anyway, women flock to him.”

fter contributing to the Community News section for the past 6 months I have to thank The Phoenix for affording me the chance to extend my profile to a greater audience and let you know more about my community through my eyes. I have had the privilege to go into schools and engage with some of our next generation and have to thank them for giving me the honour of being in their company. It also affords me the opportunity to experience; ‘A FIND!’ It came during this year’s ‘Vows Community Day,’ by way of the ‘Book Basket;’ an arrangement of books flowing from a basket like the richest of fruits. In its midst stood a young woman with a story to tell. Valentina Alexander’s love for books led her down this road after adopting her daughter-and becoming a parent for the first time; “I wanted a way of sourcing the kinds of books I would like to be able to read to her,’ she said. Community Reporter years ago, she began by selling books for other companies before taking the bold step to source her own, giving her free reign to choose what she wanted and from whom. Her trips to Christian bookshop saw Valentina struggled to find anything that reflected faith and culture, so she decided to do something about it. With that, ‘Mybookbasket’ was born. The selection has grown over the years, developing a selection for children, as well as personal development books for parents and adults. There are also services for groups, where she offers bespoke workshops and curricula for those wishing to en-

courage the love of reading and storytelling. Valentina sees books as a way of broadening horizons and increasing knowledge base, saying: “I would love parents to spend some time reading with their children and share the appreciation of the written word. “Having a bookshop is a bit like a child owning their own candy store. It allows you to be transported into a different world. I’m constantly inspired by the potential of this thing and its contribution to the next generation.” she says.

hey came from near and far to pay homage to one of the city’s most noted businessmen as the man simply known as ‘Baker’ celebrated his 73rd birthday. Fellow businesspeople, family, friends and well-wishers all converged onto the Acorn public house, in Birmingham’s Winson Green, to celebrate a life that has seen him elevate his position of great respect, with a hardened mentality that has his peers and adoring followers constantly in ore. Osborne Baker, a proud and principled native of Westmoreland, Jamaica, has packed years into a prominent career, including successful clubs and bars, with one of his latter ventures, the Alkazar Social/Nightclub, highly regarded as one of the best. And fellow-native and businessman, Manly Arthurs, licensee of the Acorn, saw fit that Baker would have the night to remember. Together with wife,

very special for all of us. We were truly proud of the turnout.” A sentiment echoed by the man of the moment. He said: “There is nothing I love more than my family. And to have them all together with my friends was something very dear to me. Baker is now spending quality time in his retirement, but, with his lengthy track-record the question is; ’Has he retired?’ Only time would tell.

The Pursuit Of Happiness by Roland Joseph Tetteh

G

REETINGS FROM GHANA TO THE B E L O V E D PEOPLE OF GREAT BRITAIN. My name is Roland Joseph Tetteh. I am your brother in the Lord. I was born in October 3, 1966 in Ghana. I now work as a logistics manager at William Pitt construction in Accra Ghana. I love the lord and the lord love us all, every month I will be bringing to you God’s News from various different perspective. As a little background to myself presented in this document, I am persuaded to bring certain things to light because until we receive the understanding of God, we will continue to walk in

E darkness. This write-up is aimed at going beyond the ordinary; to appreciate the spiritual blessing that comes to us very second in our life. Every man’s ignorance is his mountain. The solution that changes our lives is the revelation of God. Like the good book says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children”. Hos 4:6 I present this document as an access to proper knowledge and this revelation should surely be the cause of great anxiety for those truly in search of God’s redemption.

Summit aims for African unity

A

rab and African leaders from more than 71 countries and organizations met, in November, in Kuwait for the Third Africa-Arab Summit. Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, opened the meeting with a pledge to provide $1 billion in low-interest loans to African countries over a fiveyear period. Member states issued the Kuwait Declaration, which calls for economic integration within the Arab world and with African states. Al-Jazeera reported that Saudi Arabia signed economic agreements totaling $136 million with Uganda, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Mauritania, and Mozambique.

In addition to focusing on trade and investments, many African countries highlighted the plight of African migrant workers in the Gulf States. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said: “The issue of the migration and migrant workers is our collective responsibility, and, if we do not address it jointly with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, I am afraid the issue may threaten to undermine our partnership.” Participants stressed the need to promote South-South cooperation between Africa and Arab countries by forging closer relationship with the governments and the people of the two regions. The fourth Africa-Arab Summit is scheduled for 2016.

veryone the world over is searching after happiness. Some of us seek happiness or experience it in our various careers, social activities and hobbies. Millions experience happiness through religious tenets. But is happiness really attainable? Is it achievable? Defining Happiness is as subtle and illusive as achieving it. Due to the subjective nature of happiness, and the fact that it is one of the emotions just like: Sadness, love, hate, curiosity, revulsion, excitement, jealousy, contentment, depression, anxiety, fear, guilt and anger. It means different things to different people. Happiness in a material sense is transient, while in a spiritual sense it’s boundless, infinite. Most people experience happiness by accumulating material wealth, engaging in welfare work, politics, the arts and philanthropy. Others experience happiness in liquor, mood elevators, tranquilizers or other drugs. And yet still, others search for happiness by rigidly adhering to religious tenets and living righteous lives. On the contrary, happiness is a long lasting enduring enjoyment of life; it is being in love with living. It is your reward for achieving a good character and personal rational values in life. It is living a productive life, developing a higher consciousness on a Godly platform and above

all submitting to the will of God, abiding by his laws and living righteous life. Notwithstanding the subjective nature of happiness, psychologists and researchers have developed a methodology for defining and measuring happiness. Many of them use the term interchangeably with “subjective well-being,” which they measure by simply asking people to report how satisfied they feel with their own lives and how much positive and negative emotion they’re experiencing. Some have even gone to the extent of proposing means of achieving happiness by devising strategies and unconventional methods. Impressive though these psychological methods may sound, and some of the propositions may partially aid in finding happiness, can we say with certainty if people are really happy?

Do we really sit down to ponder why millions seek for happiness yet never find it? Do we really give thought to the obstacles that hinder us from achieving lasting happiness? The basic problem in our search for happiness is that our sources of pleasure are all limited. Most of the things we crave after believing that it will give us happiness like food and sex can only last for few minutes. We prioritize material accumulations which in nature are illusory, transient and in the end bring anguish. We search for the perishable, the corruptible. We totally immerse ourselves to be blinded by our desires forgetting that we live in basically a perfect world created and maintained by a creator whose basic principle in creating us is to make us happy. Why is it that the creator made happiness inherently part of us

yet we wander in darkness never finding it? The basic principles, the laws and tenets which have been given to us by the creator are substituted with our own whimsical ideas which bring untoward woes and tribulations on us. We have subverted the laws of creation and instituted our own which is gradually destroying the very things that sustain us. The world over, materialism has gained ascendency over spirituality. People are eager to define what is good for them. They choose what to believe in and abuse natural laws. Until we shall submit totally to the will of God, pursue his perfect laws with rigorous chastity, build a stolid communion with Him and live righteous lives, our pursuit of happiness will never be realized.

Bishops support White Ribbon Campaign

M

ore than 60 bishops around the country wore white a ribbon last month to support the campaign dedicated to stamping out gender-based violence. Many visited local projects and took to twitter to raise awareness. The Bishop of Aston, the Rt Reverend Andrew Watson, chair of the Panel for World Mission and the Anglican Communion, said he was delighted that so many bishops had taken up the challenge. To mark the day Bishop Andrew visited the Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid, meeting and talking with victims of abuse and those who support them. the slums of Delhi. The White Ribbon campaign, originally started by a group of men, was supported by a number of Christian organisations in this field and ‘The Mothers Union’ produced an action pack (downloadable from their website) and the organisation ‘Restored’ developed its ‘First Man Standing’ campaign. Canon Janice Price, World Mission Adviser for Archbishops Council, said: “It was vital to be standing in solidarity with the rest of the Anglican Communion on an issue which affects women in every culture.” A spokesman for the White Ribbon Campaign said: “Silence is not an option. Silence excuses violence against women. WRC needed men to swear the pledge, wear the ribbon and share the is-

sues by becoming an ambassador and speaking out. To have senior church leaders speaking out is a wonderful start in ending abuse.” Rt Reverend Andrew Watson said: “Gender-¬based violence is a scourge on our world and our nation. Stories of forced marriages, female genital mutilation, prostitution rackets, and rape

being used as a weapon of war are sickening both in their prevalence and their brutality; while here in the UK between a quarter and half of all women experience domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking at some point in their lives..."

Celebrating 10 years of Street Pastors

O

ne of Britain’s largest ever Black Christian-led charities celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special church service Southwark Cathedral and dinner in London’s Dockland. Street Pastors, a regular sight on streets up and down the UK providing much-needed support to late night party goers and the homeless and others, been patrolling local streets every Friday and Saturday nights and a prayer and a helping hand for those who needed it. Launched in response to the inner-city gun and knife crime, which was at the top off the news agenda, in 2003, today there are 11,000 trained Street Pastors across Britain, part of the 260

teams that go out every weekend and now across the world; including the US, the Caribbean, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and further. Founded by the Reverends Les Isaac OBE and Rev David Shosanya, the first team of Street Pastors patrolled the London Boroughs of Hackney and Lambeth the organisa-

tion has grown to thousands of Street Pastors across the UK, including School Pastors who go into schools to provide a listening ear to pupils, and traveling on buses as they go home. Street Pastors growth, effectiveness and success over 10 years highlights, that when Christians join forces to deal with a societal issue negatively affecting communities, they can and do make a difference. Street Pastors demonstrates that when God is in the mix, everything is possible.

Well, I would soon understood the difference between fully comprehensive cover and 3rd party insurance when I drove into a customer’s car on the works car park early one Monday morning. It became uneconomical to keep that car after the increase in premium and repair costs. I had underestimated the value of not protecting my asset against all circumstances. Because I lacked the experience and knowledge and did not seek the best advice, I suffered the consequences. If you have a business, have you considered the various scenarios that could wipe out the value you are working so hard to build for yourself and your loved ones? As a sole trader what would be the impact on your business and personal property if a 3rd party brought a successful claim against you?

l Adrian G Walker yourself and they will tell you you should do so before you move into a property or buy an expensive item. The same goes for your business assets. Have you set up your trust(s) yet? Owning your business or any asset is a liability, which attracts all kinds of taxes and claims.

What about those of you who are in a partnership or own a limited company?

Consider giving away ownership but maintaining control.

The danger can come from the most unlikely places.

The wealthy do this and have been doing it in some cases for generations. The Grosvenor Estate is a fine example of enlarging and protecting assets for generations without paying the same taxes someone else who lacks the knowledge or access to the best advice, will inevitably pay.

How about a future son-in-law or daughter-in-law divorcing your child? Is it your intention for someone you had not intended to benefit from your hard work, walking off with 50% or more of your son or daughter’s inheritance? Probably not! But is is happening every day somewhere in the UK to others who completely underestimate the value in structuring (or restructuring) their affairs for all eventualities. What about an untimely death? And I’m not hinting at insurance, although undoubtedly, that is important. What about the effects of inheritance tax for disposal of assets during lifetime or on death? Or capital gains tax? What about when you come to sell your company and make a substantial gain? Ask anyone in the security business when is the best time to build a vault or secure

The Trust is a must for protecting your assets. However, The Personal Management Company is one of the best kept secrets in the UK. As usual, there is insufficient space in this column to explain what this and how it works and why it exists for the benefit of all business owners. Better Together: Why we need to join forces with our clients

A

ndy Wilson is the Chief Executive of WAA and is Birmingham’s IPA city head. He founded WAA in 1986 and has led the growth in the agency organically as well as through a series of acquisitions. Andy has built an exceptional specialist team and continues to evolve the agency model in the process. Here he discusses why agencies and clients need to join forces to form strong commercial alliances. The marketing and advertising industry in Birmingham is currently booming, with a host of talented, innovative agencies and a great sense of community and shared passion for all things creative. Nevertheless, in these postrecession times, it’s more important than ever that agencies prove their commercial value to clients and work with them to out-think, rather than out-spend, the competition. We know that clients value our

creativity. But they need more than award-winning ideas and boundary-pushing concepts – they need creativity that is commercially driven with an expert grounding in business strategy: creativity that visibly boosts their business and helps them to appreciate the value of ours. At WAA, we call this Business Creativity. In order for the marketing industry to become fluent in this type of commercial creativity, we must join forces with our clients. By evolving together, we can meet the opportunities and challenges of our demanding, ‘always on’ world, where people’s needs, wants and expectations are constantly shifting. The opportunities that our multiplatform world offers cannot be overestimated. As a client-agency team, we need to combine our expertise and experience to make sure that not only do we effectively reach consumers; we keep them engaged and maintain a conversation that achieves

genuine results instead of simply ticking social media boxes. By working closely together to take advantage of a multiplatform world, we will optimise growth and profitable returns for both clients and agencies. To build a strong and longlasting client relationship, we need to work collaboratively through every step of the marketing industry’s evolution. Keeping clients involved ensures that we keep the value of commercial creativity at the centre of everything we do – and it means that clients get the best results from the agency they deserve. Engaging clients in developing our existing agency business models will allow us to improve industry standards across the entire production process, from pitching right through to evaluation. By following best practice and continually improving our business models to fit the social nature of world we live in, we will attract more national and international brands to the region.

This will help us to attract and retain the industry’s brightest and most diverse talent, paving the way for the continuation of positive growth and new business wins by Birmingham agencies. Evolving with our clients to a more commercially focused

creative output will help our industry to thrive and prosper in a tough, post-recession climate where budgets are tight and consumers have more choice than ever before. Finally, as an agency, it is essential to remember that eve-

rything we do can improve our clients’ businesses and grow Birmingham’s reputation as a hub for creative and commercial excellence in the marketing industry.

Chamber’s name change sends out Greater message

B

l Jerry Blackett

irmingham Chamber of Commerce Group has changed its name to underline that the organisation is equipped to support all businesses of every type and size across a wider region. One of the oldest and largest Chambers of Commerce in the UK is now known as ‘Greater

Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.’ Birmingham Chamber now embraces Solihull, Burton, Cannock, Lichfield and Chase, who combine to make Greater Birmingham the most significant economic powerhouse outside of London. The new name underlines that they are more than one Chamber. Chief Executive, Jerry Blackett, said: “We decided on this move because we feel the new name reflects better the area the Chamber serves. We want every business person in the Greater Birmingham area and their employees to know that the GBCC are

here to help. Our services include international expertise, translations, export documentation and training plus free legal, HR and auditing advice. Our change in name underlines our belief in promoting regional co-operation. There have already been some moves in that direction with calls from Birmingham City Council for greater co-operation between the component parts of the West Midlands, especially on transport issues.

forward-thinking entrepreneur met with the Government to discuss ways to create extra support for single women in business. Businesswoman, Yvonne Bignall, a single woman herself, created ‘Launching Women In Business’ went to Downing Street where she had talks with senior aides to look at issues like childcare costs and business start-up funds. Bignall, 48, who set up her business to help women start out on their own, said: “I think it was a great opportunity to represent women at the grassroots and share our concerns and hopes. It’s encouraging to think the government cares and better under-

stand our experiences.” She met with Daniel Korski, a special adviser to David Cameron, and Laura Trott, a political adviser on education and family policy. Yvonne, from Somerset, said: “To be a single parent and run your own business is tough as you’re always on the go. So if you really want to do it don’t let anything hold you back.” A qualified Chartered Management Institute coach and mentor, she said: “There are many things I wish I knew when I started out, which would have ultimately l Yvonne Bignall saved me a lot of time, hassle with the government will be fruit and money. ple with diabetes in our locality, at any one time we have far more people with diabetes in hospital than most other hospitals in the country. There are so many that the diabetes consultants and diabetes inpatient specialist nurses cannot see them all. There are nationally agreed criteria for which patients the specialist team should see whilst they are in hospital. The innovation is a big improvement on what we had in the past which relied on phone calls, faxes and letters which were slow and led to delays. Other hospitals across the country are now considering copying the idea”. Using the system, patients benefit from early diagnosis and better care each time they attend hospital as the marker stays visible on their records for other clinicians to see. Doctors and nurses can add markers to a patient’s electronic record and that automatically sends an email alert if the patient is in danger of developing active foot health problems that needs specialist intervention. Dave Kiffin, Trust EPR Implementation Analyst said, “The early identification of patients with diabetes was the brainchild of consultants Peter Davies and Bob Ryder, working with myself and Rob Jones in IT to create visual markers that identify patients suffering with the disease. “It is great to be recognised for the hard work, but I feel our greatest achievement has been improving the lives of many patients through the innovation.”

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Innovation in diabetes care up for national award digital healthcare system which improves the management of hospital in-patients living with type 2 diabetes was shortlisted for the ‘Best InPatient Care Initiative’ award by the Quality in Care Programme. The innovation, developed by clinicians and IT experts at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, will help reduce risks, promote good practice and improve patient lives. There are currently 3.8 million people in the UK with diabetes and the latest research shows that Midlands cities have some of the highest rates of diabetes in England, this includes just under 10% of people aged over 16 living with diabetes in Birmingham, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Driven by the national ‘Think Glucose’ project to improve care for patients admitted into hospital with non-diabetes related problems, SWBH NHS Trust developed an additional programme on the Trust electronic patient management system to include a Think Glucose assessment. The initiative helps all clinical staff to ensure that the Think Glucose assessment is carried out on all diabetes patients after admission, confirming that patient care is benchmarked in real time against the national Think Glucose criteria. Dr Bob Ryder, consultant in diabetes, and clinical IT lead for the ‘Think Glucose’ project said: “Because there are so many peo-

ensioners’ satisfaction with NHS care continues to be determined by where they live, new research of Britain’s retirees’ shows. Happiness with levels of NHS care varies by as much as 20% between some regions – with the gap widest between over 65s in Wales and the West Midlands. The Stannah Silver Census, commissioned by world leading British manufacturer Stannah, questioned 1,000 adults over 65, to provide a finger on the pulse of an oft-overlooked segment of

British society. Despite the regional disparities, overall 81% of pensioners said they are “happy with the quality of care I receive from the NHS” and 86% agree the “NHS is a great institution and I am proud of it.” The research shows: 71% think NHS staff are excellent, but management of the NHS is poor, 70% think the NHS needs dramatic reform if it to retain public trust and 93% think investing more in in-home care services will help them remain independent in their own homes for longer Patrick Stannah, Joint Manag-

ing Director of Stannah Lift Services, said: “Unfortunately this study confirms that when it comes to NHS care, there remain wide variations in happiness levels across the UK. Despite this it is positive to see that many pensioners really value the hard work of NHS staff, the treatment they receive and remain resolutely proud of the NHS. That said, there is a clear call for reform and need for more in-home care services, which will ease the pressure on the NHS as demand continues to grow.”

Cuts to the Legal Aid System

A

few days ago I was travelling down the M6, or rather positioned stationary on the M6, when I coughed and then, having realised why I coughed, smiled. To the left of the motorway was a small factory that I considered had been dormant for years. Smoke was emanating from its chimneys and spewing across the motorway. Ignoring health and safety concerns I was delighted to note that the factory that I thought had closed had suddenly sprung to life. Having plenty of time for

thought I realised that traffic over the last few weeks had been heavier than usual, not just on the motorway but on all arterial roads. If more people were using cars in the morning rush hour then it seemed to me that the more people were heading off to work. As I turned on the radio I heard that the Governor of the Bank of England had actually stated that statistics proved we were actually coming out of the recession and the forecast for next year was for a continued improvement.

There then followed news of the job losses at Barclays and at Blockbuster and it reminded me of similarities with the legal profession. Those involved in commercial and domestic property, company takeovers and the like, are beginning to prosper. Banks and the old-style Building Societies are releasing more mortgage funds and property prices in the Midlands are beginning to escalate. However, there is a serious downturn in the profession for those who depend on criminal justice work and civil legal aid for a living. Cuts in the legal aid system are drastic and more individuals whose rights have been infringed are now having to rely on pro bono organisations while firms solely engaged in this type of work are being forced to close or to merge with others. The impact is being felt by barristers too. As clients can no longer afford solicitors they are beginning to appear more frequently in person before the judiciary, generally unprepared and without expert witnesses, with all the turmoil that brings to the Courts system.

Office Hours: Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm Saturday & Sunday Closed

When the recession first arrived we were warned that its impact would not be felt for many months and unfortunately the same can be said for the impact of the cuts to legal aid. As is always the case, it is the poor that suffer and here at Birmingham Law Society we continue to fight against the Government’s proposals which will disadvantage those most in need and least able to fight for themselves.

tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.

It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.

Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.

Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.

A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”

Students will be given the chance to work with staff at the magazine to develop their own features which will be featured either in The Phoenix or in our sister publication, Street Cred.

With a diverse range of students, it is hoped that the students will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the paper and help further promote it within the local community we serve.

The Phoenix Managing Director commented “I am excited to be working with the students of Hereward College to not only help them develop themselves but also to develop this paper. The skills that these students have already shown to us make me confident that big things will be happening in the near future. Watch this space!”

n the UK today, less than 20% of the population are private school educated, yet they account for over 60% of the nation’s professional people, amongst them being tomorrow’s doctors, architects, accountants, dentists and company directors. The conundrum for most parents in the UK is: If you cannot pay for your child’s education, how can you ensure the best education for your child? Thirteen years ago, single-parent Natalie Jones, facing the dilemmas of a single parent, knew a solution had to be found. Worked tirelessly during the day, found time to study for a degree, earned extra working in a bar in the evenings and put her daughter through a fee paying school. She was relentless in her aims and objectives. “Often I couldn’t even afford to eat,” Natalie said. Full of energy and determination, she saved up enough money to acquire a building, in Edgbaston, Birmingham. One that would help lift the aspirations of her growing list of children. She then he managed to get the very best teachers she could find

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

W

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons

The Phoenix – December 2013

why a child is placed in care. There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

H Adoption process speeds up to benefit children and young people

T

here has been a sharp rise in the number of children being adopted, with last year showing the largest annual increase in 15 years, official figures show. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 5,206 adoptions in England and Wales last year – a 9.8% increase on 2011, when there were 4,740. Despite the good news, there are also concerns that longterm trends continue unabated. The percentage of adopted children aged one to four has

increased to 63% in 2012 – almost double that in 1998. By contrast, the percentage of adopted children aged 10 to 14 – an age group considered harder to place as they often have more complex problems – has more than halved from 21% in 1998 to 8.4% in 2012. Hannah Dobbin, policy manager at Action for Children, said: "We need to see more innovative approaches to ensuring that children are placed with families that can meet their individual needs and can offer them the stability they need."

A Department for Education spokesperson said: "We welcome any rise in the rate of adoption. In England, too many children are waiting too long for loving, stable families. We are overhauling the system – simplifying the process for parents who want to adopt and giving them clear, independent information about adopting in one place. We have also been clear that we expect councils to recruit more adopters and provide children with loving homes swiftly."

ave you ever thought about adopting? Could you be a mum or a dad to a child with special needs who will not have had the greatest start in life - giving them a secure, loving and permanent home? There is a desperate need for more people to come forward and adopt. Across the UK there are over 4,000 children who need to be adopted every year and this figure is expected to rise as more and more children come into care. Disabled children and those with special educational needs are amongst those for whom, finding a family is more difficult. In fact, in some parts of the UK, this is the largest group of children who wait the longest for a forever family. Some of these children may have special educational needs due to their start in life and many waiting for new families have some degree of learning difficulty. They may have missed out on some of their education or find it difficult to learn and concentrate having experienced

uncertainty and instability early on. They may have suffered a lack of care, neglect, or physical, emotional or sexual abuse, as well as the impact of the loss of their birth family. The majority of these children will have some emotional and behavioural needs relating to their early life. This may sound daunting, but many adopters tell us that caring for their children has been the most important and meaningful experience of their lives. With the right support, many of these children are able to reach their full potential. It may be challenging, but it can also be hugely rewarding to see how a child can benefit from a loving family and, with help and time, start to overcome some of their difficulties and flourish. If you decide to adopt there is a great deal of help available and you won’t be expected to go it alone. Many organisations offer information and advice and extra support to help meet children’s special needs can be available. Children have a variety of needs and adoption agencies need a variety of families to care for

them. There is no such thing as the ‘ideal’ adoptive family. Most agencies are more interested in what you have to offer a child than your marital status; whether you are gay or straight or what your income level is - and being over forty is not a barrier. Agencies look for adopters who can meet the individual needs of individual children. Some children will benefit from being adopted by a couple who already has children, whilst others may need the one-to-one attention of a single person. Some children’s needs are best met where they are the youngest or only child in their family. If you do already have children, they will be included in the preparation process. If you think you could give a child or children a secure, loving and permanent home through adoption, you can find out more by visiting www.nationaladoptionweek.org.uk or download the BAAF App: http://www.baaf. org.uk/info/app

Driving like mum and dad

I

nstead of ‘driving’ any of the top quality cars that dad and mum is driving, kids can now drive their own vehicle, whether it be a BMW, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Mercedes, or Mini. Due to their beautiful design and capacity to indulge their inner desires to drive like their parents, children simply love to imitate the adult driver in the family. This Christmas, there is no better way to copy the ‘biguns’ than a toy car. The market is flooded with

models that have features just like the originals and delivers smiles and excitement for time immoral. Current top rated toy cars reviews have revealed that in respect of both pedal and electric, children just can’t get enough. In order to find the proper toy f o r your child it is important for

you to gather information on the top products and thus find the perfect one within a short period of time. It is recommended that you read up as much relevant information on toy cars in order to understand better the features of the vehicles you are looking to buy before you actually do.

Birmingham’s ‘PluggedIn’ for electric cars

A

project to provide electric vehicle charging points across Birmingham has been completed, making low emission vehicles a more feasible option for city motorists. Working with Plugged-In Midlands, Birmingham City Council has now implemented a network of 36 electric vehicle charge points at 18 locations across the city in on and off-street locations. This included upgrading the four locations originally installed as part of the CABLED project, an earlier electric vehicle trial across Birmingham and Coven-

try that saw 100 vehicles tested to learn about usage trends and habits. The Plugged in Places programme offers match-funding to consortia of businesses and the public sector to install electric vehicle charging points. Councilor James McKay, Cabinet Member for a Green, Safe and Smart City, said: “The widespread use of electric vehicles is still some distance away but they are starting to gain a foothold in the market. This means it is essential that we develop the infrastructure which will make their use as easy

as possible. The new charging points are in a range of key locations, with many offering free parking for up to three hours.” It is anticipated that Plugged in Midlands, managed by Cenex, will develop a regional network of more than 500 electric vehicle Charging Points across both the East and West Midlands. To make use of the charge points that have been installed, electric vehicle drivers will need to become a member of PluggedIn Midlands. Annual membership costs £24.

he V12 Vantage is being updated to S specification, yet it doesn’t look too dissimilar from its predecessor. Benefitting from Aston Martin’s favorite party trick, the 2014 S model is the most powerful member of its venerable family and is said to be the fastest Aston Martin ever built—with the notable exception of the ultra-rare One-77. The furrowed hood of the new model continues to hide a naturally aspirated 5.9-liter V-12 engine with modest roots—it’s assembled on the premises of Ford’s production facility in Cologne, Germany. Power increases from 510 horsepower at 6500 rpm to 565 horses at 6750 rpm. Peak torque jumps from 420 lb-ft to 457, with max twist arriving at 5750 rpm. The former model's six-speed manual transmission, a smoothenough unit, is replaced by a seven-speed, single-clutch automated manual transmission called Sportshift III. It’s derived from the ’box found in the V8 Vantage S, and supplied by Graziano. The new transmission is a whopping 55 pounds lighter, and it helps translate the 5.9-liter’s extra 55 ponies into a top speed of 205 mph—up from a redline-limited 190 mph in the previous V12 Vantage. The design of the Vantage series and subsequently development remains aesthetically pleasing and perhaps that's why visual changes from the outgoing V12 Vantage

to the incoming V12 Vantage S are rather modest. Symbolizing the magnitude of improvements, the cabin of the V12 Vantage S receives revised stitching and welt detailing, complemented by new colors and an available carbon-fiber package. They include a carbon-fiber grille with black carbon-fiber or silver-mesh elements, forged 10-spoke alloy wheels, and a black roof. The V12 Vantage S is another incremental improvement in a lineup, which is based entirely on the brand’s VH architecture.

Uniting everyone through sport

D

eveloping social cohesion through sport was top of the agenda at Sporting Equals Sports Zone at the Global Peace and Unity Festival 2013 at ExCel London. With up to 100,000 delegates attending, it offered opportunities to try out sports and provide information on how people can use sport to unite communities, as well as promote health and well-being. Sporting Equals’ Ambassadors, England and Great Britain hockey international, Darren Cheesman, and Fauja Singh, British centenarian marathon runner, both attended, talking about their personal journeys and

how sport made a positive difference to their lives. Cheesman, one of the few Muslim hockey players at international level, says: “What I love about sport is that it acts as a leveler. When I look at the crowds of sports teams, you see people from all different countries, ethnicities, religions etc all coming together as one. The exact same thing happens within teams and tournaments - whoever you find in your team, you have a sense of love and

compassion for them, regardless of their faith, background, or skin colour.” The majority of Black and minority ethnic adults fail to exercise at a level that brings the full range of social, wellbeing and health benefits. There are many perceived barriers related to ethnicity and faith that often prevent people accessing sport; yet sport has the power to break down barriers, bring people together and engage them positively with a common purpose, developing happier and safer communities.

The icon who redefined cricket

A

s he made a tearful but self-effacing farewell to his glittering 24-year career, Sachin Tendulkar, the most prolific batsman in international cricket history, embraced his teammates as the test against the West Indies ended at his home ground of Wankhede Stadium. Idolised throughout the length and breadth of India, he could not avoid the outpouring of emotions that his adoring followers poured out for him, in no short measures, as his teammates and opponents tried desperately to give him the guard of honour which would be fitting as the worlds greatest batsman drew the final curtains on what was an illustrious, recordbreaking career. Widely acknowledged as the best batsman of his generation he made his Test debut against Pakistan at the age of sixteen, and went on to represent Mumbai domestically then India internationally for close to twenty-four years. He is the only player to have scored one hundred international centuries, the first player to score a double century in a One Day International, and the only player to complete

more than 30,000 runs in international cricket. Another icon of the game, West Indian great, Brian Lara, no stranger to record-breaking feats, said: “I believe Sachin has done a tremendous job, not just for Indian cricket but for world cricket. When you speak about cricket, I’d speak of Tendulkar. The number of people he has affected, the amount of matches he’s played – it’s the greatest cricket career anyone has ever played out. Sachin has done a tremendous job, not just for Indian cricket but for world cricket.” Former Australian spin-bowler Shane Warne, another cricket giant, said: “Sachin is an amazing player. We all know about his talent, but that temperament and mindset to play 200 Test matches and to play for such a long period of time shows you the game means so much to him.” Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar defined cricket for an entire generation of Indians and also redefined the terms in which Indian cricket will now be seen. Now he's retired, cricket will never be the same again.
