ne of the features of a liberal or plural democracy is the idea of ensuring the co-existence of competing political parties. This assumes all political parties can take part in elections and contribute to national debates in pre and postelection campaigns. In theory at least, this should ensure greater participation and representation. On the face of it, therefore, multiparty systems are regarded as good examples of democracy. However, can this also lead to indecision and political stalemate? One of the main strengths of the British political system based on a two party system, was its tradition of returning one of them to power, with their own clearly defined political history, ideologies and policies. Secondly, general elections centred on two main parties often ensured one of the parties secured a clear Parliamentary majority and therefore find it easier to get its main policies through Parliament. Thirdly, this system is simple to understand and ensured a clear winning party that could carry out its pre-election manifesto pledges without compromising its position within any kind of coalition government. Certainly since 2010, it could be argued that British politics is no longer being dominated by the traditional two contenders, but increasingly by smaller political parties. The result has seen the emergence of hung Parliaments and governments without a significant majority, in which the sitting Prime Minister have had to depend on smaller parties for their political life support. In such political arrangements that were not previously planned or anticipated, the major parties have had to turn to smaller ones and thereby compromise aspects of their original manifesto pledges. The 2010 elections was the second one since World War 2 where the UK had a coalition government. In

this case, the Conservative Party was forced to form a government with the Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Democrats that was only established in 1988, came third in the 2010 elections with 57 seats, while the Labour Party won 258 seats and the Conservatives 306 seats. Had the Conservatives won just over 20 more seats, they would have been able to form a government with a clear Parliamentary majority. By the time of the 2015 elections, it was the Scottish National Party that was the third largest group in Parliament, with 56 out of the 59 seats in Scotland. In the 2017 elections the Conservative Party lead was reduced from 330 to 317 seats in the House of Commons. Labour’s seats increased from 232 to 262 and the Scottish National Party seats were reduced from 56 to 35 seats. Both the DUP and the Liberal

democrats both gained a few more seats in Parliament. These results meant it became very difficult for the Prime Minister to win key votes in Parliament. In the last ten years the smaller political parties such as the Greens, UKIP, and the Brexit Party, have become more popular. In 2010 the Liberal Democrats were part of the government. Under Theresa May’s government, the ten DUP MPs became critical in order for her government to win parliamentary support. As of the time of writing this piece, the Brexit Party leadership has decided not to stand against any Conservative candidate as a tactical voting strategy to ensure the Conservatives win the election with a significant Parliamentary majority. This would ensure a more likely departure deal from the EU than if a
Don’t Forget The Importance Of Family This Christmas
he Christmas dinner is so integral to the celebrations that over half of UK adults spend more than two hours food shopping, and a further four hours or more in the kitchen planning, preparing and cooking the festive meal – that’s six hours or more creating a single meal to impress guests! Over two-fifths of people also rank Christmas dinner the most stressful meal to prepare – it’s even more stressful than meeting the in-laws. Some people can sometimes take minimum hours to cook their festive meals with barely any preparation and minimal washing up, so families can have the chance to spend less time in
Labour government were to be elected. In this way, should it work, the Brexit Party, not even two years old, would indirectly be playing a major role in the elections, and any subsequent deals pertaining to the UK departure from the EU. What these examples show is that British politics is no longer solely in the hands of the two main traditional political parties where they could do as they please. If the Elections in December 2019 fail to bring a significant majority in Parliament, Britain could once again be in the hands of minority parties as king makers. The increasing influence of smaller parties is great for representation of minority interests and democracy, but might not be so good for decisive political leadership.
the kitchen, and more time together. And, with some 88% of Brits believing that the Christmas dinner should always be homemade, the ideal mouth-watering festive feast will often feature a succulent turkey joint and delicious sage & onion stuffing, served with crispy semolina potatoes, honey-mustard roasted vegetables and the ubiquitous Brussels sprouts – all topped off with a delicious cranberry, port and orange sauce. As families are looking to spend more time together this Christmas - after spending up to half of the day hidden away in the kitchen – Christmas, as always, will again prove to be the perfect time…for ‘FAMILY’!

ithin 24 hours of registration opening for the 2020 initiative, 5,886 voluntourists signed up to be part of the Maintenance Crew in the Faroe Islands – over 2,000 more people than for the 2019 project. Once again making headlines all over the world, people from 95 different countries ranging from Zimbabwe, Venezuela and Taiwan to Russia, Malaysia and all over Europe put their hands up to take part in helping to preserve this remote nation in the North Atlantic. With just 100 places available for the 2020 project, the latest round of registrations saw 510 applications from the UK, with the USA seeing the most sign-ups, from 1,291 volunteers. Applications came from volunteers as young as 18 through to 77 year olds, and from a diverse range of occupations – from accountants, architects and lawyers through to a horseriding coach, diplomats and film directors – all with one common goal: to help maintain
and preserve the Faroe Islands' beautiful landscapes and precious natural environment. “We are yet again delighted by the incredible amount of people willing to give up their own precious time to come and help us,” says Guðrið Højgaard, Director at Visit Faroe Islands. “We are so thankful to everyone who has signed up and pledged their support and, although we're unable to host everyone for 2020's Closed for Maintenance, Open for Voluntourism project, we plan to continue these initiatives on an annual basis over the years to come.” In April 2019, the archipelago saw unprecedented success for its first-ever Closed for Maintenance, Open for Voluntourism campaign, which forms part of a wider move by the Faroes Islands' tourist board to pave the way for a sustainable future for its islands and its burgeoning tourism industry. The Maintenance Crew worked alongside locals to preserve ten locations across the islands, maintaining and creating hiking pathways and viewing areas, and setting up signposting.

These include Slættaratindur, the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, where the last stretch of the hike to the top is currently difficult to climb safely. An alternative route will be signposted and maintained by the voluntourists over the closure weekend. Other projects will include marking paths with wayfinding posts, mending paths that have eroded and re-building cairns. The 100 volunteers will be chosen at random from the mass of applications, and those who aren't lucky enough to obtain a place will be able to follow the progress on Visit Faroe Islands' website and social media accounts. In the absence of consistent data from the 10 UK Regions, there are some favourable predictors on the challenges and opportunities for SMEs in 2020. The authors of “SMEs & Risk in 2020” (Insights Zurich), referred to business and risk implications of a shifting landscape. They affirmed that elements such as ‘the workforce and workplace’; ‘business model of the future’, ‘trading in the future’ and production, product and services of the future’, will influence market trends over the next 12 months. It is expected that over the next year, 5G would be rolled out. An inter-generation transfer of businesses, flexible business organisational structures, reliance on overseas imports and exports, as well as more flexible and innovative supply chain in diversity settings, are all expected to occur in 2020 and beyond. The Manufacturing Advisory Service has indicated that 77% of manufacturing SMEs recognise the necessity to up their supply chain processes. However, over 40% of firms admitted inadequate control of processes that have undermined high performance levels. Technology innovation will stimulate more jobs as firms compete in a global environment. Future trading has cost implications for high street retailers with small firms already maximising web technology to service customers across goods and services. eBay, expects one in 10 businesses to achieve a turnover of at least £3 million. The programme is run through partners including the voluntary sector, libraries, leisure centres and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital which are supported to establish their own bespoke weight management support groups tailored to the needs of the people who use their services. All of these partners are trained
to run the programme effectively and they support their clients with access to the smart scales which allow people to weight themselves independently, receive real-time weight data through their smart phones, and track and monitor their weight through the app. The programme allows people to be in control of their own weight management plans while harnessing the power of local community groups to offer support. There are no joining fees, no pricey diet products and no stigma involved in the programme. Lisa McNally, Sandwell's director of public health, said: "We are proud that our public health employees have won another top award and Maxine has helped so many people on their weight loss journey." The programme has proven to
be popular and Maxine's analysis of the data shows that hundreds of people have engaged with the programme and been successful in achieving a healthier weight. Library manager, Jean Fenn, said: Library customers can monitor and access information about their weight and BMI. This is a great weight management tool and it's so easy to use. The scales are used by individuals and groups and are a great addition to our health and well-being resources. Jenny Wright, health and wellbeing manager for Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital NHS Trust, said: "The programme has been a huge success with NHS employees and subsequently NHS staff have encouraged patient groups to participate in the programme through local community groups."

Post-Brexit drop in music tourism could cost tens of millions of pounds A significant drop in music tourism and an exodus of firms vital to the local infrastructure are amongst a number of Brexitrelated concerns voiced by Birmingham’s music industries sector, according to a new report. The Birmingham Live Music Project report, authored by researchers at Aston University, Birmingham City University and Newcastle University, reveals Brexit-related concerns voiced by policymakers, academics, industry figures and media representatives during a one-day event held in Birmingham earlier this year. One of the main issues raised was the way that Brexit could lead to fewer artists and productions travelling to the UK from Europe, which in turn could mean a marked decrease in the number of ‘music tourists’ visiting the country and region specifically for live music experiences. Birmingham city-region organisations who contributed to the report include: Arts Council
England, Aston University, Birmingham City Council, Birmingham City University, Birmingham Music Archive, Birmingham Music Coalition, Hare & Hounds Birmingham and Leftfoot Venues, Musician’s Union, Newcastle University, Town Hall & Symphony Hall Birmingham, and West Midlands Combined Authority. Lyle Bignon, founder of Birmingham Music Coalition highlighted the city-region’s long-standing international relationships currently under threat, saying, “Birmingham’s music community – from a long and vibrant music heritage right through to the exciting
contemporary scenes producing global stars such as Jorja Smith, Lady Leshurr, Chris Lorenzo, and Jaykae – is built on the very principle of freedom of movement; artistically, economically and socially.” “The rich musical future of this multicultural city, whether new Home of Metal exhibitions, the 100,000 capacity St Patrick’s Festival, underground club nights at the Hare & Hounds, or the talent pipelines for new generations of musicians, artists, producers and vocalists through organisations like Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, is all at risk in a post-Brexit world.”

I have accomplished what a lot of people would kill for - working on a Hollywood blockbuster film straight out of university – but I know that others can earn similar accomplishments through hard work and commitment.” Tayyib, who also worked on dailies on Steven Spielberg sci-fi adventure Ready Play One – famously filmed on location in parts of Birmingham - credits his lecturers at Birmingham City University with equipping him with the skills and knowledge to work to a high standard on a major motion picture set, and believes the

city’s screen industry community has huge potential. “Birmingham’s film industry has some of the most hard-working individuals I have had the pleasure of working with, including Sheikh Shahnawaz, a Birmingham filmmaker and ‘one-man army’ who is shooting his first feature called ‘Bluff’; Mohammed Ali, an inspiring photographer who I use to shoot my BTS photography when I am making short films, and Nisaro Karim and Gurjant Singh who have a company called ‘Five Pence Productions’ making a series of short films in the city. Birmingham is well on the way to becoming a central hub of filmmakers and screen talent – collaboration is definitely on the rise.”
BBC’s Bitesize Schools Tour puts esports on careers agenda Vexed Gaming’s Chief Gaming Officer Mark Weller will be an industry expert panellists taking part in the BBC’s upcoming winter Bitesize Schools Tour, which aims to encourage young people to explore careers in the creative industries. Manchester-based Vexed Gaming is the only esports organisation to be involved in the initiative, reflecting the team’s efforts to broaden the appeal of competitive gaming beyond its core base. Established in 2015, Vexed Gaming was the first UK organisation to field an all-female team, with a second on the way; the first to open a dedicated training facility; and the first team in Europe to launch a Varsity programme in conjunction with Manchester University. Furthermore, Vexed Gaming’s parent organisation, Cooldown Ventures, is helping to evolve the UK’s esports industry via the consultancy services it
offers to teams, events and broadcasters, to give the sport greater prominence on the world stage – and encouraging the next generation of talent is a key element of that process. Bitesize is the BBC’s study support service for students, covering GCSE, KS3, KS1 and 2, Scottish Highers, Scottish Standard Grade, Scottish 1st and 2nd Level, National 4 and 5 Naiseanta 4 and 5, and Welsh TGAU. The BBC’s Bitesize Schools Tour is an inspirational project that will see the Bitesize team take to the road to deliver a series of one-hour career sessions to secondary school children in the North during December 2019. The aim is to ensure schoolaged pupils are aware of the different creative roles available to them, including marketing, media, press and advertising. The spring Bitesize Schools Tour earlier this year was a huge success, with the autumn series bigger in both scope and scale.”
A University of Wolverhampton graduate has put her photography skills in the frame by working with the Black Country Chamber of Commerce on their new look business magazine. Annie Benton, with a BA (Hons) Photography degree in the University’s School of Art, was put forward for some work experience to take photographs for the Black Country Chamber’s redesigned Prosper magazine which was officially launched in September. One of the articles focused on the West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street, and she took a series of photographs of him, as well as attending Chamber events to provide a catalogue of images for use in other stories in the magazine. Annie, 21, from Wolverhampton, is a self-portraiture and performance photographer, who works around the areas of Feminism and Women's rights within history and the modern day. She is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University.

l An ‘Engineer’
New AI Reveals Misrepresentation Of Engineers Major brands, businesses and highprofile engineers have come together in a bid to change the online image search results for the word ‘engineer’, as an AI programme trained on the results of an online search for images of engineers found that it vastly misrepresents the profession. This came at ‘This is Engineering Day’, part of a nationwide campaign led by the Royal Academy of Engineering - and supported by a range of brands and companies - to change the misrepresentation of engineering online, celebrate the contribution of engineers, and encourage more young people to consider a career in the profession. The images generated by an AI machine learning model - GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) showed how narrowly an engineer is typically portrayed: the majority of images were of a white male wearing a hard hat. An online search, conducted by the Royal Academy of Engineering, found that 63% of images on the first page of the search results were of a person in a hard hat, despite the fact that only a small minority of professional engineers wear hard hats most of the time.
City welcomes latest cohort of newly qualified teachers W olverhampton has officially welcomed its latest cohort of newly qualified teachers who joined primary, secondary and special schools across the city this autumn. Dozens of new teachers were invited to a special event at the GTG Training Centre in Wednesfield, where they had the chance to meet other members of the "class of 2019" and find out more about what being a new teacher entails. They also had opportunity to meet members of the City of Wolverhampton Council's School Improvement Service and Cabinet Member for Education and Skills Councillor Dr Michael Hardacre. The teachers heard about the support that is available to help them in their careers in Wolverhampton and the good work that is taking place to further raise educational standards, which has seen improved performance in schools. Latest data shows that over 12,000 more pupils in the city now attend Good or Outstanding rated schools than they did five years ago, with the proportion of Good and Outstanding schools jumping from 70% to 86% in the same period. The newly qualified teachers also had the chance to participate in workshops focusing on a

Cllr Dr Hardacre said: "We have around 120 newly qualified teachers working in Wolverhampton’s schools this year and it is wonderful to see so many people choosing to teach in our city. “We have great ambitions
Celebrating Birmingham's Rights Respecting Schools As the United Nations celebrated 30 years of its Convention on the Rights of the Child, Birmingham City Council is highlighting its schools’ successes in the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools programme. Virtually half (251) of all schools across the city, from nursery through to secondary, are embedding children’s rights in daily school life through the Unicef Rights Respecting School award. Of these, 88 have reached bronze standard, 86 silver, 13 gold and 64 are starting their journey having registered with the programme. Birmingham nursery schools have been instrumental in promoting the case for nursery schools nationally to be able to apply for the gold (full Rights Respecting) award. Up until 2018 nursery schools could only achieve up to the silver stage. Goodway nursery became the first nursery school in Birmingham and the second within the whole of the UK to achieve the Gold Award in July 2018. Other nurseries within Birmingham have already registered
their intent to apply for the Gold Award in 2020. Unicef says that Birmingham “continues to be one of the leading local authorities in England,
working with Unicef UK to promote and realise the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in educational settings”.
for the years ahead as we look to continue working with our schools to drive forward further improvement.
“Our newly qualified teachers have a very important role to play in this; they bring with them fresh drive, ambition and creativity
and I'd like to wish all our new arrivals a long, happy and successful teaching career here in Wolverhampton."

WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE
Pioneering 19th Century footballer, Emma Clarke, gets Blue Plaque for making sporting history
O
n a chilly spring afternoon in 1895, a London park became the venue for a football match which would make British sporting history - with both teams made up of women. Although there had been other matches played in the UK previously, this one - between the North and the South – would attract over 10,000 spectators and proved extra special. The date was 23rd March 1895, and it took place on Nightingale Lane. The North beat the South 7 - 1. But it was one of the South’s players who stole all the headlines. Emma Clarke would go on record as being the first named Black female footballer in the UK.
Born in Plumstead, on 2nd December 1871, she was daughter to John and Caroline Clarke and Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka)born mother, Caroline. She was said to be the daughter of a relationship between a British national residing in southern part of the country during the middle of the 19th century, and a darkskinned local. It is not yet clear whether the latter was one of the African people who resided in South Ceylon since the 15th century, or whether it was one of the darker indigenous South Ceylonese people of the region. Caroline, however, was accepted as the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bogg (Emma’s British grandparents), and was taken back to England, where she grew up in mid-19th century London. She would bore 10 children
with Emma being the fifth. Younger sister, Florence, was also a talented footballer, and along with Emma also played for British Ladies FC. To commemorate pioneering footballer Emma Clarke, her sister, and all the entire British Ladies football team of 1895, a blue heritage plaque was unveiled at Campsbourne School, on Nightingale Lane on 2nd December 2019. The school is the site of the former Crouch End FC, the club where Emma and her sister Florence once played their football. The 2nd December was chosen to install the Nubian Jak Heritage plaque as it marked the 148th anniversary since the birth of Emma Clarke. Dr Jak Beula CEO of Nubian Jak Community Trust, said: “Although it gave me great
pleasure to honour Emma Clarke with a Nubian Jak Community Trust blue heritage plaque, the plaque is also tribute to her sister Florence Clarke, to other footballing pioneers like Carrie Boustead, and for all the pioneering women of the last century and this, who had to overcome a number of barriers just to enjoy playing the game they loved.” Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheila Peacock said: “It is an absolute honour to pay tribute to Emma Clarke, a true pioneer for BAME women in football, and for women across the world. We are thrilled to have this plaque here in Haringey, where Emma once played her football. What a great message for the girls and young women of Haringey – I hope it inspires generations to come.”

John Cleese farce ‘Bangs’ into Wolves for 2020
I
t has been announced that ‘Bang Bang!,’ a brand new comedy by John Cleese, and starring Tessa PeakeJones, Tony Gardner and Wendi Peters, will be at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. Cleese makes his stage writing debut with a hilarious new adaptation of this classic comedy – a delicious blend of French Farce and Fawlty Towers - based on Monsier Chasse by Georges Feydeau. When Leontine, a respectable society lady, discovers that she’s been hoodwinked by her husband, Duchotel, who’s always pretending to go hunting but really chasing after other ‘prey’, she vows to take revenge on the
philanderer! But while Duchotel’s away, his lifelong friend comes calling – and he’s on the hunt too. Will Leontine get caught in his sights, or instead set a trap of her own? Secrets unravel as the devilish Duchotel finds himself snared in a door-slamming, trouser-dropping, balcony-climbing night of chaos set amidst the stylish apartments of Paris. Peake-Jones became a household name with her role as Raquel in the iconic comedy ‘Only Fools and Horses’. Her extensive stage work encompasses the National Theatre and RSC, recent credits include ‘The Winslow Boy’ and ‘Shirley Valentine’.

We at Phoenix Newspaper were privileged to be invited to the opening of the new Dolby Cinema Screen, which was an experience like no other. Sat in the Odeon at Broadway Plaza with 3d glasses munching popcorn, during the movie the sound was so amazing that sometimes the popcorn would involuntarily shoot out of the box! Ha! The theme for the night was Spreading The Love, and it was evident that everyone who was a part of the night was overflowing with love to give, leaving the entire room in a happy buzz for the whole night, as the attention turned to the winners of the awards, “If you want to read about humanity, read The Phoenix Newspaper”, host JohnRose, in turn, added, who last year stated that The Phoenix Newspaper was the 8th Wonder of the World. Noted McDonalds Foods franchisee, Paul Ramsey, went further: “As a McDonalds franchisee, being associated with The Phoenix Newspaper adds to my 40-years of inspiring children and young people. I, like them, want to ‘inspire before I retire’. “The work carried out by Dr Marcia, and her dedicated team, is ‘inspiration’ personified”. Representing Town Hall & Symphony Hall, Richard Loftus, Director of Sales & Marketing took the opportunity to talk of the massive steps they have made in
engaging in all citizens saying: “Town Hall & Symphony Hall introduces thousands upon thousands of people through its doors every year. “For over 10-years we have been inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to worldwide success. “And The Phoenix Newspaper Anniversary Gala Dinner & Awards Show, again, is paramount to our ongoing success and has allowed us to tell everyone of that”. In his keynote address, High Commissioner Seth George Ramocan added: “Dr Marcia can’t do ‘ordinary’. “I know what love is – and Dr Marcia represents all that is ‘love’, She paints the right kind of image that is lacking elsewhere”. Presenting the Jamaican-born mogul with flowers, he went on to speak from the heart – stating. “Dr Marcia has gone beyond the ‘ordinary’.” American-born Dr Toni Luck (Mamma T) – who has been living and working in Africa for a number of years, now, went on: “It was a great honour and privilege to be part of these celebrations. And, in answer to that Tina Turner classic, love has ‘everything’ to do with it as demonstrated here – and Dr Marcia has proved to be the ‘harbour of peace’! “In a world that’s full of troubles, we all need Dr Marcia and The Phoenix Newspaper. It’s proving to be an amazing miracle”. As all intently listened to the orator, she went on: “How blessed I am, and all of you are, to be able to witness a marvel that is The Phoenix Newspaper – LONG LIVE THE PHOENIX NEWSPAPER!!!”

Birmingham Hippodrome joins The Big Give campaign
B
i r m i n g h a m Hippodrome is urging people to dig deep during their annual festive fundraising campaign, aiming to raise £20,000 to give the gift of theatre to 4,000 young people. To achieve this ambitious target, the theatre has joined The Big Give’s Christmas Challenge 2019, which will see all donations doubled for just seven days from the 3rd December. The donations raised will support the Hippodrome Education Network (HEN) activity, which enables young people from areas of low-social economic engagement to visit shows, participate in workshops and develop career opportunities in the creative industries. Zaylie- Dawn Wilson, Head of Learning & Participation at Birmingham Hippodrome commented: “We work with schools to bring creativity back to the curriculum and to enable young people who have never visited the theatre before to watch live performances” “Donations raised will help us to give the gift of live theatre
to more young people and continue this crucial work which develops confidence in young people, supports their future career ambitions and most of all, inspires them.” The Big Give matches donations through partnerships with over 20 funding champions, including Reed Foundation, The Childhood Trust, Four Acre Trust and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. As an independent charity, Birmingham Hippodrome relies
on regular support from charitable donations and sponsorship to deliver Hippodrome Projects, which is the theatre’s own curated programme of indoor and outdoor live performance, community work and transformational learning projects. Donations for the campaign can be made online only. To donate from 12 noon on the 3 December, visit: www. birminghamhippodrome.com/ biggive2019

Shilangu Mixing It Up!
G
rime DJ ‘Shilangu’ hails from Croydon in South London, arguably the epicenter of grime and UK garage in the early 2000s. As a young ‘bedroom DJ’ Shilangu started construction of visceral grime mixes that rapidly caught the attention of local grime legend ‘MIK’. As MIK could see the potential within the young DJ, MIK, regularly conversing with Shilangu over MSN (shout out to everybody over the ages of 20) he sent MIK a practice mix, this later on would cement MIK’s theory that the young lad from Croydon was on the rise. MIK later, invited the young DJ over to ‘AXE FM’ to showcase his talent live on air. This, as it turns out was a steep learning curve for the young DJ as he crashed and burnt live on air, "I met up with him and he took me there, I FAILED SO HARD! The chat box was brutal, it was a serious ‘L’ (shout outs to everyone under the age of 20) but MIK said to me just get better because I have potential" and get better he did. With the recent fail at the forefront of his mind, Shilangu impressively took this energy and used it as fuel to elevate himself to become so masterful at his craft, he would never have to go through that disappointing experience again. Practising around the clock perfecting his art, he went onto securing around 20 slots over the course of a few years on local pirate radio stations from London to St Albans. Manic FM, Axe FM, Urban FM TV and React FM to name just a few, unfortunately with outside problems arising, this acted as a distraction and a catalyst as a viscous lump of
depression, slowly veering him away from his love, everything would eventually amalgamate into chaos... something had to give, wrestling with his mental health eventually leading to a serious break down, he became a shell of his former self and sadly, fell out of love with everything. With mental health becoming a very real issue in his life, the slow, up hill struggle took a long time to pass "It took me around 7 years to build me and my life back up again, then I slowly started falling back in love with Grime, Music and Mixing again". With his mind healing, alarm bells within himself started ringing "I always had that ‘what if’ voice in my head, so (rhymes with Duck) it, I’m not getting any younger!" Quickly becoming musically ‘match fit’ Shilangu secured a spot on the infamous ‘Mode FM’. Struggling at first, he became stronger with his music mixing, rapidly picking back up where he left off. Always having a passion for music, Shilangu recalls his favourite CDs and inspirations growing up "I’ve always had a passion for music from a young age, my favourite CDs were ‘DJ EZ’s’ UKG mixes in the 2000s". With the relentless stream of music catching his ears this naturally gave way to the young lad asking for a pair of Vinyl Decks for Christmas, with his uncle being a DJ, it was a natural step for a young Shilangu practicing at higher tempos to make it harder to mix "I wanted to practice my socks off to get good!". Encouraging his passion for music was his loving family, with his Mother and Brother being his biggest supporters, he recalls "the fact my mom wasn’t always
on my back telling me to peruse another career was testament to my DJ-ing, she understood my passion and desire to making a success of being a grime DJ". Further reinforcing his nack for mixing were the people he performed to, with the crowd being super positive when he mixes, being as consistent as possible is key "I try to make the vibe stay as high as possible to make an impact with listeners", a impact it was, this is how Shilangu came on my radar! Right now, Shilangu has a guest mix on ‘RudeKids’ Grime show on Kiss FM which will have aired by the time this article is out, finally getting his foot in the door at KISS to showcase his talent as one of the best in the industry. It’s clear that Shilangu is a unstoppable force, proving this musically and mentally, Grime music makes him feel at home "It makes me feel Happy, Excited, and Smiley! And has given me so much, I do thank Grime for helping me get back to myself again". With aspirations of Being a DJ on big shows, being a host, and a general personality Shilangu’s work rate is testament to reaching these accolades.
Anything you’d like to add?

Shakespears Sister Ride Again By Mandip Singh Taunque
S
hakespears Sister made the dreams of thousands of fans come true as they made a triumphant return to the stage during their ‘Ride Again’ tour which began on Halloween night. Fans like me would have been too young to go to a Shakespears Sister when they hit the big time first time round and missed out on seeing them when they split during the height of their fame in the early 90s. The group made up of Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit announced their reunion back in May and immediately created a buzz by announcing the release of their stunning compilation album titled ‘Singles Party (1988-2019). The album reached number 14 on release in August giving the group their first top 20 album since their hugely successful second album,
‘Hormonally Yours’, in 1992. Playing their penultimate show in Birmingham’s stunning Symphony Hall on 19th November, fans waited patiently for Siobhan and Marcy to come on stage and when they did, the atmosphere was electric. With both ladies playing guitars, the show opened with their 1991 hit ‘Goodbye Cruel World’ to rapturous cheers and applause. The setlist covered all their biggest hits including their top 10 debut single ‘You’re History’, ‘I Don’t Care’ and their most iconic single ‘Stay’ as well as fan-favourite album tracks. Interestingly the ladies opted to not have ‘Stay’ as their final track much to the surprise of fans. Instead it was sandwiched between the gothic and moody ‘Black Sky’ and ‘Are We In Love Yet’. The show was not only for nostalgia. The group have written and recorded several new tracks for both their Singles Party compilation album and more recently their ‘Ride Again EP’ which was released in early November. Fans couldn’t get enough of new tracks ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ and ‘When She Finds You’ which was recorded with Richard Hawley who also made a special guest appearance to perform with the group in Birmingham. Super fans also got to meet the group during pre-arranged meet and greets with some travelling from Germany just to see the ladies. For me it was a dream come true. It is said you shouldn’t meet
your idols, but these glam rock gothic ladies were so lovely to talk to and their auras just shone. The reunion between Siobhan and Marcy was as much about their friendship as their music. They didn’t talk for 26 years following the split in the early 90s but after soul searching, forgiveness and being just downright good souls, they patched up their differences. They showed that life is too short to hold grudges and having big egos. Both are massive talents in their own right but its captivating when they are together. If their most recent releases are anything to go by, they will be staying for a long time to come. 5/5

RCOT launch ‘Small Change, Big Impact’ campaign
F
ollowing ‘Occupational Therapy Week 2019’, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) launched a new campaign, ‘Small Change, Big Impact’, which celebrates how the small changes occupational therapists make can have a big impact on the people they support. Occupational Therapy Week
2019, was the national awareness week run by RCOT to promote the value of occupational therapists and the fantastic work that they do across the UK. Taking the campaign as its theme, this year showcased and championed the impact of occupational therapy and RCOT members on the lives of service users and the communities they live in.
RCC members reflected on their practice and shared their stories about how a small change they implemented made a big difference to someone’s life. They will also be holding events, talks with colleagues, the public or their local community and schools, as well as engaging with local media. The week was not just for RCOT members as anyone was able to join in Occupational Therapy
Week 2019 and show their support and share their ‘Small Change, Big Impact’ campaign stories on social media. RCOT Chief Executive, Julia Scott said: “Every day across the UK, occupational therapists change lives for the better. Occupational Therapy Week 2019 was a fantastic time to celebrate this. The Royal College knows very well how hard our members
work and the extent of the difference they make and we just want everyone else to know too. “I am encouraging everyone to be loud and proud and get involved in the campaign. Share your support for occupational therapists by using the hash-tag #OTWeek2019 and sharing your Small Change, Big Impact stories. “Sometimes it’s just a small change that’s needed to make a

Lupus unit reconfirmed as a centre of excellence by national charity In recognition of its on-going 1st class care, Birmingham lupus clinics (including City, QEH and BWH) were appointed the first Lupus UK Centre of Excellence in 2005. Since then, the UK’s second city has remained at the forefront of research into the fight to cure the disease. Lupus UK vice chair and Trustee, Yvonne Norton MBE, said: “The facility at City Hospital continues to fulfil all the criteria required to remain a Lupus UK Centre of Excellence. We are pleased that the relationship between City Hospital Lupus Unit and the Renal Lupus Unit Clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital continues to work so well. “Lupus is a debilitating disorder of the immune system known as an autoimmune disease. Patients with lupus typically experience their immune system turning against parts of the body it is designed to protect, leading to inflammation and damage to various body tissues. “Currently there is no cure for lupus, however effective treatments can ensure people with the disease can lead active, healthy lives. Lupus Research Clinical Nurse Specialist, Rebecca Gilman, said:

Lupus UK Centre of Excellence because it matters to lupus patients. “Our patients tell us it is difficult having an unpredictable condition, and so it is important that their condition is managed well. “They tell us they want experienced clinicians using well established treatments in a logical and standardised way. “As lupus is not common it takes time to build up this experience, and patients tell us they want to be able to come to a centre that has been checked
with their Centre of Excellence assessment, and if awarded, this status independently validates that staff at the awarded centre really do understand the condition, lupus patients and they will be giving them the best possible care and treatment. Long-time patient Angela McNab who has lived with lupus for nearly 30 years agrees, as she added: “The experience of being treated at City Hospital is a positive one, because they allow me to be part of the management of my disease.”

Loved ones remembered this Christmas with charity ribbon appeal
A
heartbroken mum who lost her son to deadly meningitis last November has launched a national charity’s Christmas Ribbon Appeal. Katie Joyce had to take the agonising decision to turn her 4-year-old son Enzo’s life support machine off after scans showed the disease had left the youngster – the happiest and most bubbly boy Katie ever knew – brain dead. “This will be our second Christmas without Enzo”, she said. “I still ask myself how it could have happened to my family. “One minute I was at home with my baby thinking he had a simple cold and the next I was being told something no mother should ever hear.” Katie is supporting charity
Meningitis Now’s annual ribbon appeal, which offers everyone the chance to remember their loved ones at Christmas and donate to fight back against the devastating disease. Families affected by meningitis but not bereaved are also invited to support the appeal. A white ribbon, inscribed with their loved one’s name, is placed on the Tree of Remembrance at Meningitis Now’s annual Christmas concert in Gloucester Cathedral. The family also receives a second white ribbon for their tree at home. “I know Enzo wouldn’t want me to give up, so we will have presents, we will have a tree and his white ribbon will be on it,” Katie added. “My little boy will always be in my heart.”
Katie added: “After I lost Enzo, Meningitis Now was there for me and my family. They helped us find the strength to carry on. “In the early days, just having someone there to listen on the end of the line meant so much. “The on-going emotional support has been so important to me too.” Tom Nutt, Meningitis Now’s chief executive, said: “We know that Christmas can be a difficult time as many of us remember those who are no longer with us. “Meningitis doesn’t respect this special time of year either. Twenty-two families every day throughout the festive period will feel its impact, with some lives being changed forever. “Please support our Christmas Ribbon Appeal and help us to
Gynaecologist launches all-natural detergent to reduce yeast infections An obstetrician gynaecologist has developed an all-natural laundry detergent designed to thoroughly clean women's panties to help reduce yeast infections. Based in Atlanta, George, in the USA, Dr Tosha Rogers, a graduate of B.S. in Chemistry, formulated the detergent Clean and Cute Panty Wash - that is made specifically for women's underwear. The all-natural laundry detergent came about after Rogers heard a lot of concerns about female hygiene with some of her patients having to deal with bacteria and yeast infection. She found out that one of the main reasons for this is poorly cleansed panties. Even
though women are cleaning their panties, the available detergent in the market doesn't really remove the build-up of bacteria, yeast, blood, and mould in panties. Clean and Cute Panty Wash is the first and only detergent that focuses on female hygiene. It is all-natural, non-GMO, sulphur-free, paraben-free,
vegan, animal cruelty-free, and perfume free. It only has 3 all-natural ingredients, one of which is the essential oil lemongrass to make it smell great. She said: “Clean and Cute was developed purely by listening to my patients and trying to solve a problem.”

keep fighting this terrible disease and be there for Katie and other families who need our support, at Christmas-time and throughout the year.” All donations go towards the charity’s ongoing lifesaving and life-changing work, funding research into vaccines and prevention, raising awareness so people know what to look for and what action to take if they suspect meningitis and rebuilding futures by providing dedicated support to people living with the impact of the disease. Meningitis Now is working towards a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need.

NHA and TTNCMC join forces for gala evening of major fundraising
M
arked as a 30th anniversary charity gala and a fundraising dinner in aid of the National Caribbean Monument Charity and, as one of 30 events across West Midlands, Nehemiah Housing Association invited a select number of the region’s leading figures and organisations to the H Suite, in Edgbaston, to highlight the overwhelming work they do – especially in today’s trying times. Hosted by the effervescent BBC WM Radio presenter, Nikki Tapper, the evening was also marked as a perfect opportunity to raise much needed funds for The
National Caribbean Monument Charity (TNCMC) with a charity raffle with a great selection of prizes. There – TTNCMC – on-going aim to install a monument at the National Memorial Arboretum, in recognition of the sacrifices and major contributions made over the centuries by men and women of the Caribbean who served in the British Armed Forces and the Merchant Navy and to uphold their memory, maintain links with the past, present and future generations for services to Britain. The planned events range from tea parties at its various retirement schemes through to staff celebrations and a fundraising
dinner and church thanksgiving service. “Given all we’ve achieved over the past 30 years”, says Chief Executive, Llewellyn Graham, “we wanted to celebrate our birthday in style”. And, with the TTNCMC working in association on the night, in ‘great style’ they did. With great food on offer, and equally great entertainment to hand, what was ‘not to love’? With the mass Caribbean contribution to the world’s major conflicts, and being the only race to not be recognised for such, at the National Memorial Arboretum, the work of the TTNCMC in highlighting it has always – and

Services held for Vietnamese lorry victims
More than 100 people attended a service held in memory of the 39 Vietnamese victims found dead in a lorry container in Essex. The service, at the Church of the Holy Name and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in east London was led by The Reverend Simon Nguyen, who said the 39 died "seeking freedom, dignity and happiness". At Mass on at the same church on Sunday Bishop Nicholas
Hudson also asked for prayers for traffickers. After prayers were heard and members of the Catholic congregation performed readings and candles were lit Mr Nguyen said: "We show our condolences and sympathies for the people who lost their lives on the way seeking freedom, dignity and happiness. "We ask God to welcome them into his kingdom even though some of them were not Catholic
but they strongly believed in eternal peace, so we pray for them." After the service he said: "The people here are very united because we are all refugees. "All the people here came here as refugees in the '70s and the '80s and the '90s." A memorial Mass began with a projection of the trailer containing the bodies being removed from the industrial estate. After a minute's silence, Bishop Hudson said the service was to pray for the relations of congregation members who could be among the dead. He also asked for prayers for the emergency service staff who attended the scene. Bishop Hudson also sought prayers for traffickers, who he hoped "as a result of this tragedy may have had a change of heart".

Hair entrepreneur becomes the first to sell chemical free colour products on Amazon
W
ith the global hair colour m a r k e t expected to reach over $326 million by 2025, one aspiring entrepreneur has taken it upon herself by becoming the first African American to sell her chemical-free temporary hair colour products on Amazon. In 2017, Electra Davis, from Alabama, in the USA, launched ‘Mysteek Naturals’, a unique and custom temporary hair colour that offers an alternative option from the harsh chemicals of traditional hair colour. And since entering the market place, it has grossed over $100K in revenue and is expected to triple that growth.
Mysteek Naturals creator, Electra, was then presented with the amazing opportunity to sell her products on Amazon which reaches over 200 million global shoppers daily just in time for the busiest shopping season of the year. She says: “Women shouldn’t have to damage their hair just to get the colours that they want to wear. “I created ‘Mysteek Naturals’ to accommodate women who do not want use harsh chemicals and dye to achieve their desired looks. “I chose to sell on Amazon because I needed the world to know there is now an alternative to using harsh chemicals to obtain the colour they desired and if their hair
is already chemically treated with a colour that they had the option to switch up the colour and then return to their original colour within minutes without striping the colour to obtain another colour”. Mother of two, Electra, is believed to be one of the first women to have created a chemical-free hair colour product, having started her company because, like so many other women, she was looking for an alternative to the rinses without the harmful chemicals and process of using a developer to bleach her hair to get that vibrant colour she so badly desired. Her mission, she says, is to assist her customers in remaining health conscience while maintaining a personal relationship with them to obtain their feedback to continually improve her hair product and evolve Mysteek Naturals over time. Hair colouring is extremely popular and various shades of hair are offered by almost every leading cosmetic brand around the world. About 75% of women in the US alone colour their hair to enhance their looks.

OW what an opportunity this is to greet you and to introduce myself to all you fantastic people out there in Phoenix land and across the world. I really appreciate this wonderful opportunity to reach a global audience with my work so I have to say a massive thank you to Dr. Marcia McLaughlin, the Phoenix Newspaper, and of course you the audience who make this possible for an opportunity to reach out to so many people in so many countries. But we all have the same shared values and we share the same planet. We live in communities that requires us to make decisions that affect not only ourselves
but others that live in the same community. My name is Dave Gauder (Big Dave), I am a National Community Champion and World Strength Athlete, to see my profile visit www.dgangelofstrength.co.uk. As you will see, my life and work revolves around all areas of negative issues that can greatly dismember families and communities. To date in the UK I have physically reached and spoken to over one million young people, in my ongoing quest to address negative pathways and where that can lead them to. As another part of my work is with the inmates of HM Prisons so I really understand the consequences of making the wrong decisions for these young people. The offenders experience of life behind bars, helps me to both educate and inform the young people that I come into contact with on what can be expected should they make the wrong decision and find themselves in the offenders place. My work allows me to help others stay on the right pathways and build safe positive relationships. When I take my program of work SLAMH (Start Low Aim High) into the prison and after my initial introduction and presentation and tell them my life story, it is amazing how many inmates approach me after my input. They say to me I wish I hadn’t
taken that gun, I wish I hadn’t taken that knife, I wish I hadn’t committed that crime, I wish I hadn’t taken the decision I did. But you can not wish your life away, we are all responsible for our own actions, LIFE is not a game, you can not just press reset and go back to the beginning, we have to live with the consequences of our decisions, making sure we take the right pathways. All of my work is about building safe positive relationships and taking the right decisions in life. I am a huge believe in people power and what that can achieve, for the right reasons and in the right way. Together we can achieve so much, so I would like to invite you to participate in a new service I am offering to you. If you have a problem that you think I can help advice you on and is relevant, please feel free to contact me through my website and I will endeavour to assist and or point you in the right direction to help you with your dilemna. People ask me how I achieved my 26 Guinness World Strength Records and my response is that my personal mantra in life is whatever the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve (never say can’t) nothing in life comes easy and you have to work for it. So always remember your mind is the highest level of strength and powers the will to achieve your goals. We all have the power to shape our own destiny and it is how we use it that matters. the face behind the brand, Bobby Singh helped pushed the FightMania event and cause onto an even larger and far reaching platform with the help of his marketing expertise and his premium collection of 1,500 plus digital screens and billboards across the country. Bobby Singh said, “Our ethos at Love Your Postcode is about providing a premium service and performance at the highest level whilst remaining committed to the community we serve in. “I am really grateful for the on going sports partnership with Mr Hira and we are committed to taking this great cause to an even bigger audience in 2020 and beyond through our branding expertise which means we were able to raise even more awareness and funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.” On the night three contenders were honoured with a championship belt for going above and beyond in their training and fundraising. UK house prices rose at a slower rate in the year to July than at any time since September 2012, up by 0.7%, official figures show. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said there had been general slowdown in UK property price growth in the last three years. This was driven by a slowing market in London and southeastern England. But the latest figures show the biggest drop in prices in the last year was in the North East of England. Property values in the region fell by 2.9% in the year to July and were down by 2.1% in July compared with June, the data from the ONS and Land Registry shows. On an annual basis, there were also falls in house prices in the South East of England (down 2%), London (down 1.4%), and the East of England (down 0.5%). Overall in the UK, the annual rise of 0.7% was the slowest since the 0.4% rise of September 2012. The biggest rise was in Wales, up 4.2%.
The UK register of approved plumbers, WaterSafe, is urging homeowners to stop, find, check and label their internal stop tap and make this job the top of their ‘to-do’ list this winter. The internal stop tap will shut off the water supply quickly if pipes burst during a sudden freeze or thaw, which can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to homes and their contents. Data from the Association of British Insurers shows that during a spell of freezing weather, a claim to repair a burst pipe costs an average of £8,800 – and can often be more. Repair costs can be significantly reduced if the stop tap is used to turn off the water as quickly as possible – so knowing where your stop tap is and checking it regularly to make sure it is working is essential. The internal stop tap, sometimes also known as a stopcock or stop valve, should be turned clockwise to turn off the water supply. Common places to find it include: • Under the kitchen sink • Kitchen cupboard • Downstairs bathroom or toilet • Garage or utility room • Cellar • Under the stairs. Property owners are responsible for the internal stop tap so if you can’t locate it or it’s not working, contact an approved plumber for help at watersafe.org.uk. WaterSafe’s timely advice is supporting the Met Office’s ‘WeatherReady’ campaign, which encourages everyone to think about what they can do to prepare for and cope with severe weather.
Newsdesk@thephoenixnewspaper.com
Julie Spinks, director of WaterSafe, said: “This year we are focussing our winter messaging on one critical piece of advice for households which is take the time to locate the internal stop tap, and importantly, to check that it’s working, in case of a plumbing emergency this winter. “It’s a good idea to label your stop tap once you’ve located it – and to add the number of a WaterSafe approved plumber in case you need it in a hurry, because the consequences of not doing so and potentially facing the misery of flooding do not bear thinking about.” Pipes in unheated areas should always be protected against winter temperatures with insulating lagging to help prevent them from freezing and bursting in the first instance.

SPORT - WITH STEVE WILLIAMS
CPL unearths some immense cricketing talent By Dr Christopher Johnson The recently concluded CPL 20 over cricket tournament unleashed what was already known; immense batting and bowling talent as the competition entered its mature phase (starting 2013). Despite the current turbulence in Windies regional cricket, the game itself in that part of the world is still ‘alive and kicking’, as youngsters claimed the spotlight as evidenced by CPL performance statistics. Between August and September 2019, the teams- Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots , St Lucia Zouks and Trinbago Knight Riders - competed for the spoils. There were spectacular individual performances in the tournament with Jamaican Brandon King in 12 matches, scoring 496 runs at an average of 55.11 with a strike rate of 148.94. Batting as an opener for the Amazon Warriors, he scored a belligerent 132 not out, the highest innings of the CPL history with 10 glorious fours and 11 massive sixes against the Tridents on 6 October 2019. Trinidadian Lendl Simmons scored 430 for an average of 39.09 and a strike rate of 150.34. Much was expected of ‘Universal Boss’ Chris Gayle, but his performance was paltry throughout the series. More recently, in the bowling department, spinners have shown remarkable prowess in the shorter form of the game as evidenced by a new talent that emerged. Antiguan-American cricketer, Hayden Walsh Jr was a remarkable find for the tournament and hopefully the regional team, as asserted by Sir Vivian Richards and other reputable analysts. The ebullient Walsh Jr who represented the Tridents, weaved his leg-spinners and although he competed with the magic of South African spinner, Imran Tahir, the young Antiguan showed maturity. In only 9 matches, he captured 22 wickets at an average of 12.68 and an economy rate of 8.28. His exponential googlies wreaked havoc among opposition batsmen and he copped both a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul in the tournament. His systematic destruction of the Knight Riders whom he picked up five wickets for only 19 runs in four overs, fired his team to a huge 63-run win in the
league stage. In the end despite a succession of 11 wins, the Amazon Warriors were unable to get over the finishing line, as the Tridents skippered by the calm, astute Windies Captain, Jason Holder, triumphed to win their second title. With its carnival ambience of glitter, artistry, innovation and cultural symmetry, the CPL has proven again, that young players’ commitment and dedication, can become a catalyst for the modernisation of Windies cricket. Many contend that there is a quiet, almost unspoken fervour of hope that the return to winning ways for the regional team, might not be far away. The selectors have shown faith by including players - Walsh Jr. and King - for the Windies T20 & ODI tour of Afghanistan November 2019. As commentators, Ian Bishop, Tom Moody and Darren Ganga, rightly acknowledged, ‘only time will tell’ which way the winds blow.
Lest We Forget England’s Unlucky 13th International Football Game
I
By Dr Tony Talburt
n November England’s football team played their 1000th international match. This game was rightly seen as a special commemoration that fittingly ended with a resounding 7-0 win for the home team at Wembley Stadium over Montenegro. This result sealed England’s passage to the Euro competition in the summer of 2020. On such an evening of success, and given England’s significance as a global contributor to the game today, it is certainly worth reflecting on some of the team’s highs over the years. It is, however, also useful to dwell on one of its worst lows. In fact, of all the one thousand fixtures played, game number thirteen, played in 1881 stands out for a couple of reasons. Since the first international game in 1872 when England and Scotland played to a 0-0
draw, there have been a number of significant triumphs for the Three Lions that could match the excitement and enthusiasm of their win over Montenegro. In 1882 for example, England beat Ireland 13-0 and a year later they once again beat Ireland, this time by 7-0. In 1959 they beat the USA 8-1 and two years later triumphed over Mexico by 8-0. In 1982 they had a 9-0 victory against Luxembourg. Of course, no discussion about England’s footballing achievements could be complete without some reference to the year 1966. This represents England’s crowning glory when they were world champions after winning the World Cup. Despite these successes listed above, game number thirteen is probably one fixture most England supporters would love to forget. On 12 March 1881 at the Oval in London, in front of some 8, 500 people, England
were beaten 6-1 by Scotland. This in itself should not come as a surprise, because, apart from the very next game between the two, played the following year when England beat Scotland 4-2, they often struggled against the Scots during the two decades of the 1870s and 1880s. One amazing fact, however, about game number thirteen in 1881 is that it still remains England’s heaviest defeat on home soil. A second interesting fact highlighted in the book ‘Andrew Watson: The World’s First Black Football Superstar’, was that the captain of the Scottish national team that beat England so decisively, was a Black man named Andrew Watson. He was born in Guyana to a White Scottish former slave owner and a local Black woman in 1856. Not only was Watson the world’s first Black person to captain a national football
team, he was also the world’s first Black football administrator, as he was the secretary for the prestigious Queen’s Park Football Club. The secret behind much of Scotland’s success during these two decades was due to their style of play based on combination football with its emphasis on passing of the ball as well as individual dribbling, with which Andrew Watson was familiar. Within a couple of decades, England had adopted this style and their international fortunes slowly improved. Game number thirteen will probably not be remembered by most people, but that defeat to a Scottish team captained by Watson helped, indirectly, to pave the way for England’s subsequent successes. Sometimes the successes of today are borne out of defeats and setbacks of yesterday. This was certainly the case in 1881 following game number thirteen.

Students score sports science bursaries
S
tudents are gaining valuable experience behind the scenes at the region’s football clubs as part of a sports science course at the University of Wolverhampton. The MRes Sport and Exercise course supports students to develop as a researcher within their specialist area of sport. This year five students have secured bursaries for their fees, including two students who are working with Wolves FC. Raj Soni-Tricker has secured a Wolverhampton Wanderers FC sport science bursary, working within the Academy at Wolves. He said: “I think this will help develop my applied research skills within football which I’m keen to incorporate into my work. I have been with Wolves for over a month now and it’s great experience. It’s very hands-on and I’m working with the players and staff there.” Gavin Uppal has secured the Performance Analyst Bursary at Walsall FC. He said: “I am really excited to start the course. I want to develop the skills I have developed at undergraduate
level and apply them in the elite performance field.” Meanwhile Rebecca Lea has gained a role working as a Lab Assistant at the University. She said: “I’m excited by the new role – I’ve done a lot of lab work and this will give me more experience. My dream job would be to work as a physiologist in a cycling team.” Dr Tina Smith, Senior Lecturer in Biomechanics and MRes Sport & Exercise course leader, said: “The bursaries are an excellent opportunity for our students to gain experience in professional sport and exercise environments. Having the work experience alongside their Master’s qualification allows the students to enter the job market wellprepared.” The MRes Sport & Exercise course aims to develop students as a researcher and reflective, evidence-based practitioner within their specialist area of sport, exercise or coaching. There is an emphasis on student-led research and modules focused on the application of research within both laboratory and applied settings.

Muir targets world record at world-class Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow With just days to go, it has been announced that Team GB & NI runner, Laura Muir will attempt to set a new 1000m World Record at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow on Saturday 15 February 2020. Confirmed to compete at the event which sees her race on familiar territory in her home city, the reigning double European indoor champion and European outdoor 1500m champion will aim to start 2020 in electric style as she targets a historic world record -breaking performance in front of her home crowd. Muir is already the British and European record holder over 1000m having clocked 2:31.93 back in 2017 to go second on the all-time list behind Maria Mutola, and now she will aim to take the number one spot
by breaking the world record of 2:30.94 – set back in 1999 when she races at the Emirates Arena. Not only does the venue serve as Muir’s indoor training base, but the 26-year-old also won 1500m and 3000m gold there at 2019’s European Indoor Championships – so she is relishing the opportunity to
compete in front of packed home crowd as part of her Olympic Games preparations. Speaking on racing at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow, Laura said: “I can’t think of a better way to begin 2020 and Olympic year than with a world record attempt in my home city and in front of a home crowd at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow. “Through the hard sessions this winter, knowing that I’ll be stepping back out onto the track in Glasgow will be absolutely huge motivation, as will the opportunity to attack what is a really tough and long-standing world record. “With that said, I feel that going quicker that 2:30.94 is a real possibility, and I can’t think of a better place to go for the record than in Glasgow and at such a world-class event.”
A study from Birmingham City University (BCU) has shown that people from wealthier backgrounds were much more likely to make it into professional cricket than those from less affluent upbringings. The results also highlighted that a lack of access to wealth created barriers to participation and development in cricket, contributing to an ethnicity bias in the sport on a national scale. The research, taking in ethnicity data from an England and Wales Cricket Board survey, found that 56 per cent of Under 16 – Under 19 cricketers, and 45 per cent of professional players, were WhiteBritish and attended independent schools. British South Asian players were shown to be much less likely to make it into professional cricket, despite the sport being very popular among these communities. The results highlighted that White-British cricketers were disproportionately represented at most levels of the game, particularly those from wealthy backgrounds. Ethnicity and school-type distributions were then compared with expected distributions for ‘White-British’, ‘British South Asian’ and ‘Other’ ethnic groups, revealing the demographic split in the sport. Researchers concluded that, given the popularity of cricket amongst British South Asian communities, a lack of potential talent was unlikely to be a factor in their under-representation in the sport. Instead, higher relative access to wealth was thought to be a key factor, as those from wealthy backgrounds are likely to experience greater opportunities and support throughout their development as a cricketer.
