It’s 100 not-out for centurion, Edwin

E

dwin Williams was his usual bundle of energy at his birthday party which marked a milestone, not only in his life, but in the record books. Clutching his prized present, the resident of Ridgeway Court, in Birmingham, celebrated 100 years on the planet with a party, for family, friends and just about anybody who wanted to be part of history in the making. maican-born Edwin was all smiles on this very special day. Witnessing the birth of the automobile, the trauma of two world wars, plus much more, and being part of the building of one of the Panama Canal, the seven wonders of the modern world, a young-looking Great-Great-Uncle Edwin, who lived the majority of his life in London, before moving to Birmingham five years ago, said: “The life I’ve lived is the greatest gift God has ever given me, though

working on the 50 mile-long Panama Canal stands out.” “I worked for the richest man in the world Henry Ford Jr. (the son of the original car manufacturer, Henry Ford - who desperately wanted to take me back to America with him. But for the horrendous racial tension of the time things could have been different for me.” “Nevertheless, my life, to date, has been blessed and I’m looking for great things in the future.” The total number of centenarians in the world remains uncertain, but for Edwin Williams the future looks as bright as his illustrious past

elebrating her 90th in grandiose style was Sylviana Holness as a vast room, packed family and friends, made this a birthday to remember... bar none! Son, Cliff, led the tributes to this quiet, unassuming and much-loved ‘family leader’ as he reflected on the sacrifices she made, in her own life, in order to make better her children’s and those around her. “Mum’s greatest ambition in life was always to be a teacher, yet for us, her children, she put that on the back-burner, did jobs as a dressmaker – and a very good one at that – cake maker, cook and caterer just to make sure that we, her children, were given the very best. for that, we are truly grateful.” “So, for us all to be here, to celebrate her 90th birthday shows her real strength, grit and determination for us to follow. She’s a great example.” He led a long line of people who told of her massive influence on their individual and collective lives, to this day. A native of St. James, Jamaica, Sylviana (a.k.a. Mrs. Williams), a monumental figure in her community in Erdington, Birmingham, sat quietly regal and majestic, as well-wishers stood up, paid their heart-felt respect, to one of her country’s true survivors, and played their part in making her 90th a birthday she will always remember...for many years to come.

lways respected and always observed but many people of non-British extraction was said to have felt ignored with their very minimum – at best – presence during Remembrance Sunday. With it almost common knowledge that up to one third of British troops fighting in the trenches during the first world war said to have come from the Caribbean, Africa and India that didn’t translate to the faces marching down the Mall during the last ceremony – or, indeed, any previously. Sadly, there’s a general understanding among the wider population that Black, Sikhs and Muslims - amongst many others made - no impact in the horrific fight to defend the country. The questions were asked, by some observers; ‘Was the omission deliberate? Had they been forgotten?’ The answer was no, not entirely. There was mention in a few places, particularly on military websites, but not enough. The first world war was taught

as a core topic in history classes so how was it possible that nothing was ever heard about these Caribbean, African and Indian soldiers before? Today, it is ever more important that these men and women gain greater acknowledgement. Over a million Indian troops gave service alone, and died in huge numbers. The Caribbean – with its tiny population in comparison to India – sent nearly 16,000, the majority from Jamaica. Chinese workers were co-opted to do menial tasks, Africans from British and French colonies were conscripted, and in Britain itself, Black British soldiers such as Walter Tull also served. How many of their names are remembered by the general public or taught in schools? Khudadad Khan – a devout Muslim who won the first Victoria Cross for a non-white? Indra Lal Roy – the ace fighter pilot? Lionel Turpin? Gobind Singh? The list of names forgotten, or never known by most, is long and most never be forgotten.

iverpool and England star, Daniel Sturridge, exclusively tells The Phoenix Newspaper about his charity; The Sturridge Foundation “Our goals are simple; to provide

youngsters with the opportunity to develop and to have fun doing so. We also look to support vital local community projects in towns that are special to my family. As a young charity, our focus so far has been on two projects:

When my dad, Michael, and I first met Cleveland Clarke at Westfield Football Club in Woking, we were immediately struck by his passion and clubs vision for helping young adults between the age of 16 and 19 develop as foot-

ballers and as people, with a big focus on education. Education is really important to our family, my mum worked in schools and many of our extended family members are still working in education; my Aunt Ava Sturridge-Packer CBE was recognised in the Queens Honours for her services to education in the midlands. So for The Sturridge Foundation to support a great initiative that focuses on football, education and helping young people to develop, was a natural fit. In the four years we have worked with Westfield. The Academy has really moved forward, to the point where it has been licenced to provide education for forty children to study on site, whilst receiving high quality football coaching. Westfield Football Club was founded as a Boys Club in 1953. Within twenty-five years the team had risen up the pyramid, notching up Surrey Senior League titles, and become founder members of the Home Counties League. Now renamed the Combined Counties League, Westfield FC have played in it ever since and presently grace the Premier Division. Westfield under 18 youth team, now known locally as The Sturridge Football Academy, play their football in the midweek floodlit league and for the 2015-2016 season will be entering another team in a College

The Sturridge Football Academy helps young athletes achieve their aspirations of becoming a footballer. Aside from football, we believe that education plays a vital part in the development of each player. Our education apprenticeship program will create opportunities and pathways for players upon graduation of the course. Apprenticeship courses are run from Westfield Football club in Woking Surrey. • BTEC National Diploma in Sport - 2-year course • Fitness courses • Coaching course (non-playing students accepted) The professional environment The Sturridge Football Academy has installed will give each candidate the solid foundation for a successful future whether that be an athlete, coach or scholar. Supporting the Academy is an exceptional team of personnel; consisting of tutors, coaches, physiotherapists, nutritionists

the Sturridge Foundation the esteemed organisation it is. We have staged three successful family day’s in Kingston, Jamaica, which have given thousands of youngsters and their families the chance to enjoy a great day out, live music and some competitive (and not so competitive!) football, netball and basketball. The family days have also been the catalyst to raise funds to allow the Foundation to donate to local community projects, from schools to hospitals. My dad and mum (Grace), sister (Cherelle) and brother (Leon), my granddad, cousins and extended family all join together to help make the day as memorable for us as a family, as it is for all the local family’s taking part. This year’s event was held on Saturday 20th June 2015. At Tinson Penn playing fields, Greenwich Town, Kingston Jamaica and was a huge success. There was a five a side football tournament a funfair for the kids and a stage show with performances from Jamaica's top ranked entertainers. This year we donated money and laptops to seven schools in Jamaica: Greenwich All Age School, Penrith Basic School, St. Georges Girls Primary Infant School August Town Primary, Bethal Basic School, Winward Road Primary/Junior High and Miracle Tabernacle School. We look forward to staging more events in the near future and contributing to the development of under privileged kids here in the UK and Abroad.”

young fundraiser from Birmingham has made a generous donation to the Young Persons Unit (YPU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after selflessly asking relatives and guests at his birthday party to donate rather than buy him a gift. Eight-year-old Amar Singh Gill, who attends Blue Coat School in Birmingham, has been raising money to help teenagers and young people with cancer, who stay on YPU while receiving treatment. For his eighth birthday, earlier this month, he invited fifteen guests to attend his ten-pin bowling party. Instead of buying presents for him, however, kind-hearted Amar asked party attendees to make a donation to YPU. He also requested that family members celebrating the next day do the same thing, raising an incredible overall amount of £320! Asked why he chose to support YPU, Amar said: “Last year my brother and I had a joint party and raised money for a children’s hospital, but this year I wanted to do it on my own and raise money for grown-ups.” The Teenage Cancer Trust Young Persons Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham treats people aged 16-25 from around the West Midlands; and

Kind-hearted local boy gives to teenagers with cancer thanks to donations like Amar’s, is also able to provide added extras to help make patients’ hospital stays more comfortable. On Friday 20 November, Amar came to visit the QE to present YPU staff with his cheque and have a look at the type of facility his donation could help fund, including musical instruments; state-of-the-art Xbox, PlayStation and games; and a working

jukebox! Laura Beacham, Teenage Cancer Trust Clinical Nurse Specialist for YPU, was there to meet him and tell him about the other things charitable donations provide, such as pizza nights, a specialist teacher, DVDs and computer games. Laura said: “Kind donations such as Amar’s mean we can continue to provide people going through a very difficult time with

a bit of relief. It really does make a difference to be able to chill out in a non-clinical environment with your friends and family, get some quality ‘me time’ on the PlayStation, or focus on learning something new like playing the guitar. “Amar’s donation will go towards further helping teenagers and young people with cancer, and we’re really grateful to have his support.”

he Phoenix Newspaper’s Health & Wellbeing columnist, Dr. Horace Anthony Vendryes, was amongst an illustrious list of leading figures as Jamaica honoured their achievements in the arts, science, and literature. Standing side-by-side with the likes of internationally renowned and celebrated reggae music producers; Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, Dr. Vendryes, the founder of the Vendryes Wellness Center in Montego Bay, who has transformed his medical practice into a blend of conventional and alternative modalities, an author, lecturer and radio presenter, was overwhelmed at being among the eight-member class of 2015.

“What an honour,” he said. “Its antiquity, iconic status and unique value makes being presented with a medal a truly one-of-a-kind experience.” I am absolutely delighted, but also humbled and sobered by the recognition in such a spectacular fashion as this.” Other noted recipients, who stood alongside Dr. Vendryes and the two-time Grammy Award-winning ‘Rhythm Twins’ (Sly & Robbie), who have produced classic records for Grace Jones, Joe Cocker and Gwen Guthrie among many others, included architect Errol Charles Alberga Jr; poet and painter Ralph C. Thompson, dance icon Patsy Ricketts and photographer Donnette Ingrid Zacca.

CAMARA’S SPOTLIGHT

Ms Sheri Adegbesan

L

et me introduce you to Ms Sheri Adegbesan Founder of “Life Changers Foundation” (a not- for- profit organisation). A charity that has set targets and worked tirelessly to achieve goals, that have stretched even the broadest of imaginations, it was in 2009 I was privileged to eventually meet and become acquainted with their dream. This dream included reaching the masses, towards improving the lives of people in need. Later in 2010 I was also a recipient of A Life Changers Award under the “Releasing Human Potential” for Rising Star - Music and Entertainment! Believe me it was a surprise but also such an honour. I knew that Sheri Adegbesan was a formidable woman greatly respected, out to promote and develop better community relationships but I had no idea exactly how powerful she really was. I also wondered how she knew of me and slowly but surely over the years our paths crossed many times, working with a number of acquaintances from various other charities. The Life Changers Foundation offer various training courses: that meet legislative and civil service requirements in many areas. They continue to deliver a wide range of learning services, primarily for Government Executives and other acquaintance organisations. They also reach across the wider public sector from the leadership setting policy and strategy to those delivering on the front-line. Understanding the pressures on public sector resources, they aim to deliver affordable training that helps make a difference to delegates’ performances. The International Training aims to strengthen civil and acquaintance organisations in order to promote and advance equal opportunities and empowerment.

Welcome to ‘Camara features’ a new column where I will be spotlighting some of the most amazing charities, organisations and people I have had the privilege of working with. Be a part of my journey and learn and enjoy about being inspired.

The purpose of the empowerment initiative is to strengthen the organisations supporting and implementing capacity building initiatives in selected local groups and organisations, to increase their negotiating and lobbying skills and to improve their ability to build coalitions and undertake joint campaigns. The programme has also led to women assuming more leadership positions within the targeted organisations. They encourage active participation of women organisations in local authorities and other state bodies thereby representing the interest of their various communities. As a result of this, more projects have been developed in African and they are encouraging more partnership working with international organisations. Application and CV Workshop: This session teaches clients how to complete a job application form and also how to write a supporting

statement. Sometimes the language used in job advertisement can be confusing, this is why we train clients on how to read a job advertisement, to know whether the job is suitable for them before they apply. This session also trains clients on

how to identify a job that matches their skills and Agencies for Public Health and Health Promotion, with the view of setting up a reference group for the various health issues affecting the country and to address the major health needs in their experience. They not only produce CV’s for clients during these sessions, but

also teach them how to write a CV and view it as a marketing tool, where they have to promote themselves to a potential employer. Interview Techniques & Job Search: This session offers interview advice including interview questions that interviewers may ask, questions clients may want to ask, general interview guidance, panel interview and group interview test. This session also helps boost confidence before an interview and it also offers role play. Life Changers Foundation Health Project aims to brings together Public Health and Health Promotion Agencies from health ministries in various African Countries to spread information developing innovative ways of delivering their Health care Agendas. The project’s general objective is to improve the capacity of the participating agencies to respond effectively is to strengthen the links between the National countries. This is the very reason I am featuring Sheri Adegbesan and The Life Changers Foundation in Camara’s Spotlight this month. It is people and organisations like this that don’t just feed the needy, they give them the tools of life to help them excel and build communities themselves.

I have much to thank foundations like The Life Changers Foundation, as they help nurture and promote people’s dreams. The work continues as I heard through the grapevine, an amazing Award ceremony is currently being organised in Nigeria. Life Changers Awards set out to provide a standard of excellence and create a networking platform for people interested in making an impact in their community. There is no higher accolade for creativity, originality, professional expertise and sheer effectiveness. Life Changers Awards 2015, a brain child of the Life Changers Foundation, has been won by notable individuals from all the continents of the world whose contribution to humanity has been commendable and impactful. Individuals that have received recognition through this award includes; Hon. Adijat Adeleye from Nigeria, Dr Roberto Oscar Aquilano from Argentina, Nina Kabra from

India, Chris Casey from United Kingdom, Linda Malukutu from Zambia amidst others. The vision of making a world that through better care better education, better employment opportunity and sustainability, helps those more disadvantaged people in society – especially with good medical care being made available! Life Changers try to ensure that those less fortunate people are not denied a happy, healthy life simply because of cost and striving towards providing a better life to those in need. The Life Changers Foundation has not waited for someone else to step in and do something. Indeed they have seen that help is required and they have stepped up to the mark, believing that every little step helps. Globally, the number of people in poverty has been in decline in the developing world for around 25 years, yet Poverty in Africa has been rising for the last quarter-century! Life Changers Foundation aspires to release individual’s potentials and give them an opportunity to maximise them. Volunteers, supporters, donors and funders have contributed significantly to the development and growth of Life Changers Foundation and they are highly favoured, not forgetting those from the past. Life Changers have kept the dream alive, by motivating one another even when the going gets tough! Ms Sheri and the foundations’ appeal is for everyone to become a Life Changer in their own right. Let us work together to build the worlds’ next generation of leaders, and make the world a better place. Life Changers Award is an annual event held to promote better community development. This annual event raises the profile of organisations and individuals and also showcases immense talent, innovation and ingenuity. The goal of Life Changers Awards is to develop innovation and good practise in different communities and to promote social interaction within our various communities in the UK and internationally. Thank you Sheri and the team, keep on building and inspiring. You can contact Sheri and Life Changers at admin@life-changers.org.uk

COMMUNITY NEWS WITH LJ

O l These pictures may be a fair few years apart, but Camille can still cut up a dance floor!

An Honour to Serve

T

wo females who have taking the level serving their community and being an inspiration above the call of duty. Camille Ade John and Marva Bernard. After 30 years of work across the education profession, mental health, and being a part of many community projects in roles from Director to bid writer to supportive link and Comrade to PNP Jamaica, on the 13th November Mrs Camille Ade John had a party in her honour. High Commissioner Aloun Ndomet-Assamba made the special trip to bid farewell to this special Jamaican who has decided to return to the land of her birth. There were messages of thanks from Councillors and family and friends. How fitting it was held at The Drum as unable to make the event himself; Mukthar Dar sent his wife to represent him as he remembers Camille was instrumental in him getting his job at The Drum where he served the community well for 14 years until he stood down last month. Moved by the personal messages from across the spectrum of her life journey, Camille Ade-

John in her address said 'I cannot thank you all enough for your kind words, and though it is sad to leave family and friends, it is time'. Camille Ade John left a compelling message for the community as she called to community activist Beenie Brown as she said she recalled telling her daughter as she was growing up, if trouble ever broke out get to 104 Heathfield Road. Camille reminded us that we need to be each other's strong rock and stand by each other in order to build solid foundations for the children coming behind us.

As we raised our glasses together before Ms Camille cut the cake made for her in the shape of Jamaica, officially taking her slice of Jamaica. As the dance floor opened to some of her favourite tunes, it is fair to say the dancing queen graced the danced floor showing all she can still 'cut up a rug'. Madam Camille Ade John, mother, sister, kin, friend, supporter and comrade; "we love you whole heartedly and we will miss you dearly. We 'Thank you' for the foundation you have left behind and as we promise to work together for a brighter tomorrow.

A Inspired

ge 27 with a full time life of growing up, studying, working and being a mom to her daughter, now Candace Bertram can add 'Published Author' to her many titles. 'The Life He Chose' is so much more than a compelling fictional story and the inspiration behind this book with a message, is one that has to be read. Candace Bertram is from a sibling group of four, from a everyday family brought up by loving respectable parents and extended family who have hopes and aspirations for their children. Too often the news headlines are about young people losing their life to knife crime. However when that headline features a family member, as a young person how do you channel that emotion? All too often we read that this pain being internalised and is at the root of further family tragedy. Having lost her brother in a tragic knife incident in 2007, how re-

n the 14th of November Marva Bernard OD (Order of Distinction) stood down from her role as President of Netball Jamaica having served for the maximum 10 years allowed by the association in this role. Bernard is only the third president to serve the full 10 year term, and surely faced some testing times during her reign. What is inspiring about Marva Bernard is her passion for this beautiful game, 'there are tests in every way possible, but it brings you joy at the same time' says Bernard. Having previously served as the treasurer for 12 years for the Jamaica Netball Association, before the association became Netball Jamaica, I am sure the experience from her previous role served her well as President. Jamaica still rank fourth in the World rankings; a position they have held for over three decades, which surpasses all expectations, especially as they cannot com-

pete with the financial support the three nations of Australia, New Zealand, England who are ahead of them, receive. However every sports person knows there is no price that can be put on passion, and Bernard a former player is not short of that. Marva Bernard set up the Berger League a semi professional league where local players play with side internationals in their teams, and also started 'Pickney Netball' with 3 and 4 year old upwards, ensuring the grassroots of netball are taken care of. I am sure during her reign The President dreamed of making Jamaica number one in the world ranking, and this starts with an eye on the players and the coaching staff. When looking to close out her reign as president, Marva Benard set her sights on the Commonwealth Games 2014 and the World Championship 2015. Convinced with the ability of the players and coaching staff, this was Jamaica's best opportunity to go for Gold. Bernard was able to

l Mrs Nova Phillpotts Brown, now the first VP of Netball Jamaica presenting Marva Bernard OD with her Flowers of Thanks. freshing it is to read about this life 'she's chose'. At her book launch on the 15th November at Jaguar Centre; quite a fitting setting, Candace explained the book is based on a young man who likes fast cars and a fast life style. Candace is clear that this book is not about her brother, however she identified the need to write this book to help with dealing with her loss. As Candace explained to her captive audience she had always wanted to write a book, naturally dealing with the loss of her brother whilst getting on with life, took over. However in 2012 Candace started writing her book. The words flowed, but as Candace was to learn the offers to get the book to print was not so easy. Candace following all the right procedures to entice publishers to sponsor her book, however this was to no avail. A determined young lady who explained she dislikes the word no, Candace was not going to be put

off by these rejections. Candace said she remembered the author of fast selling novel, which has since had a blockbuster movie, was by a lady who had self published her book initially, and is now well published. Inspired by this, and although this has involved a lot more time, effort and finances; Candace was determined this book would be published. Having researched a proof reader, a print company, purchased her ISBN number and married it all together; with the clear inspiration of her brother who would have encouraged her, Candace took the decision to become self published. Leon Francis was an every day young man who was enjoy life of family and friends, who had always enjoyed music, rapping and writing lyrics. As a tribute to her brother the title of the book was adapted from something he was penning at the time he tragically lost his life. What inspired me at the launch

invite and convince former coach of World No1 team Australia Jill McIntosh to join Netball Jamaica to fulfil this dream. In Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games 2014 Jamaica experienced a telling victory over 3rd ranked England to win the Bronze Medal. Then started the focus for 'Gold Rush Down Under' the World Championship 2015. Unfortunately the Sunshine Girls could not repeat their victory over England to be ranked 3rd in the world, however they did retained their 4th place world ranking. As well as playing for their country, it is important to support and man manage these players individual talents. In a game where goals wins games, is it any surprise that Jamaica's top two shooters are part of the International draft to the Australian ANZ League,. Both have received the honours of Most Valved Player (MVP), as well two other players who have been drafted to play in the ANZ league, making that four players in total under Bernards reign. One of the Presidents last duties was to congratulate and bid farewell to two of her internationals players to the Super League team here in the UK, this is another first for Jamaica. Shanice Beckford and Nicole Dixon have been drafted into Team Northumbria team for the season 2015/16. Marva Bernard is very proud and this bodes well for other Sunshine girls in the future. I asked "what next for you Madam President" I was assured a well earned rest, as she wishes her successor all the best. It is fair to say when netball is in your blood you will be forever tied to it. Marva Bernard says "its in my blood". To watch the huge steps Netball Jamaica has under Bernard reign is to be commended, the future looks bright as she passes the baton on. "Marva Bernard you have been a true ambassador to Netball Jamaica and to the sport. On the behalf of the supporters from the Diaspora UK, "Thank you your dedication and hard work". was the courage of this young lady, who encouraged people through her obvious personal pain, that if you have thought about writing a book; get writing. The evening was opened up as a network evening after the Q & A. One of the questions put to Candace, was 'What is the message behind this book'? Candace simple replied 'Life Choices'. Speaking to Candace she explained whilst most 16-30 year olds maybe able to identify with traits in the book, all who read it will surely be able to relate to it; looking back at some of their lifes choices. This Candace assures me she has had confirmed by her mom, who has since the launch read the book; as this was a delightful surprise to her family that Candace had completed and published her book. What more ringing endorsement do you need. This must read self published book is available on www.thelifehechose.co.uk, also on Amazon and as an E-book.

joined the UK stem cell register in 2005, through ACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust) whilst at Notting Hill Carnival. I was approached by an ACLT volunteer whilst I was standing around soaking in the carnival atmosphere. They asked me if I wanted to join the stem cell register (back then it was referred to as the bone marrow register). I hadn’t previously been aware such a register existed; however once I heard the volunteer speak on the woefully low numbers represented on the register for individuals of ethnic origin, it made perfect sense for me to be involved. I signed up on the spot. Fast forward to 2007 I was contacted and informed I had come up as a match for someone. I felt so happy to know that I would be doing something so amazing. I would be saving the life of someone in need. It really was a no brainer. In the lead up to me donating I was provided with information about the two ways in which I could donate my stem cells, the preparation involved, what happens on the day of donation and the recovery period for both options. I was then given the opportunity to decide which option I preferred to proceed with. I decided to donate via Peripheral Blood Stem Cell donation, which is very similar to giving blood. Prior to my donation day

I was given injections to stimulate the production of the blood stem cells. In October I went ahead with the donation which mostly involved me lying down for 5 hours whilst I had my blood filtered. I had some minor side effects; I felt dizzy and weak however the upside was emotionally, I felt fantastic! I had completed my donation journey. Someone out there was going to receive a second chance by receiving my donation. A few years after my donation I decided to become a volunteer for ACLT as my experience as a lifesaving donor was a wakeup call to me to support an organisation like them, in return for the support they provide to my community. Additionally my donation had me thinking about the many patients who were still in need, waiting for an unrelated stem cell matched donor to be found. I wanted to use my positive experience to encourage others to follow in my footsteps.” WE NEED MORE AFRICAN & CARIBBEAN PEOPLE TO JOIN THE STEM CELL REGISTER When a black person with blood cancer desperately needs a lifesaving transplant they have less than a 20% chance of finding the best possible match. YOU can improve this by joining the stem cell register. Please call ACLT on 020 3757 7700 to find out how to join the register, or visit www.aclt.org

The Hallow

A

The Phoenix – December 2015

dam (Joseph Mawle), a conservationist from London, moves to a remote cabin in the Irish wilderness with his wife Clare (Bojana Novakovic) and infant son in order to begin work on the dense forest surrounding their new home. The local residents immediately take a disliking to Adam and his family and they are warned to stay away from the woods, as they belong to The Hallow - a host of evil, folkloric creatures who dwell deep within the forest. Ignoring these warnings, Adam continues his work anyway, but soon finds that there may be more to these warnings than he initially thought. Every so often, a film will come along that you neither love nor hate. There are elements you really enjoy and elements that

frustrate you and they will all be delivered in a movie that both impresses you, yet somehow leaves you slightly underwhelmed - The Hallow is that movie. Corin Hardy makes his directorial debut with this nifty little horror movie that has more than it's fair share of stumbles along the way, but always manages to recover. Hardy has several short films and countless music videos under his belt, all of which have bestowed him with years of experience in telling a mesmerising visual story, but lacking the ability to tell an emotional one and that's where the main issues lie with The Hallow. There's no denying that The Hallow is one of the most visually striking movies to come out in recent memory and while the movie itself is dark and grim, it's difficult not to be impressed by the moody,

washed-out cinematography by Martijn van Broekhuizen and the breathtaking special effects that have been handcrafted by a wonderful team of artists. The Hallow is a movie with minimal CGI, a rarity in modern cinema, and that is perhaps the most memorable thing about it. Once Corin Hardy decides to unleash these forest-dwelling creatures upon us, we are gifted with a vast array of puppets, animatronics and performance artists in heavy make-up and it's almost hypnotic. While these foul beasts are gruesome to look at, it's hard to avert your gaze from these phenomenal, hand-crafted creatures. Unfortunately, this is also where one of The Hallow's major issues lie. It is perfectly understandable why Corin Hardy would want to show off these wonderful cre-

wORDS by antony brown

ations, but it has an adverse effect on the movie as a whole. Sometimes, especially in horror cinema, what you don't see is scarier than what you do see and once Hardy unleashes his group of banshees and evil fairies upon the audience, they come thick, fast and frequent. They have a slow introduction, starting out with inexplicable noises and shadows in the distance and it's all very intense and atmospheric, but then our senses are bombarded. The creatures are in it so frequently that it reaches a point where it gets kind of exhausting. One can only imagine how great this movie could have been if Hardy had chosen to keep his creatures under-wraps for a little longer. Performance-wise, The Hallow is solid and the entire cast are able to deliver strong performances from the material they were given. Bojana Novakovic, in particular, is fantastic. She has to reach an whole new level of fear as she not only has to protect herself, but she has an infant child to protect throughout this entire ordeal, as well. Just imagining what it must

be like to be going through something as horrific as this only to have a small child to look after at the same time is enough to make ones skin crawl. What begins as a moody and suffocatingly dark horror/drama quickly evolves into an atmospheric fantasy, full of creatures of folkloric legend.

Drawing inspiration from movies such as Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead and John Carpernter's The Thing, The Hallow is an engaging, sometimes scary, sometimes exhausting, mostly derivative but overall impressive little independent British horror. Corin Hardy is definitely one to watch.

This is not human. It is difficult to understand such things, done by human beings.” He said he was praying for the families of the victims, for France “and for all those who suffer.” The Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, issued a statement of comfort addressed to Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, the archbishop of Paris. “Once again, the Holy Father vigorously condemns violence, which cannot solve anything,” Cardinal Parolin said, “and he asks God to inspire thoughts of peace and solidarity in all and to impart on families in this trial

Of course, he added, “we must be prudent and not irresponsible, taking all reasonable precautions, he said. He added: “I’d say that the Jubilee of Mercy is all the more necessary. Ricky Otto

ootball sensation Ricky Otto grew up on a council estate in Hackney, one of east London’s most deprived areas. Being the middle child, Ricky was raised singlehandedly by his mother. Despite his humble beginnings, by the age of 10, Ricky was regarded as one of London’s best up and coming football stars, having represented his district Hackney and Greater London as well as training with Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic. During his early school years Ricky excelled academically however, because of his disruptive behaviour, Ricky was expelled from school at the tender age of 14. With no formal education Ricky turned to crime to fund his lifestyle which caused him to develop a reputation for himself on the streets of Hackney rather than on the pitch. His desire to be respected amongst his peers motivated him to flourish in a life of crime. He soon became well renowned for his juvenile convictions and at the age of 17, Ricky received his first of five custodial sentences. He ended up receiving four years at the Old Bailey for robbery. During his time of incarceration, a life changing conversation with two offenders compelled Ricky to turn his life around. He left prison unwavering in a profound belief that he would achieve his goal of becoming a professional footballer.

Driven by passion, he managed to attain his lifelong boyhood dream. However, Ricky was forced to retire from football due to a serious knee injury.

Can you describe your turning point in prison?

My first time in an adult prison was an eye-opener, especially as I watched men old enough to be my father scrape up used cigarette butts off the filthy floor to smoke because canteen wasn’t open until the following week. I just knew that my life was worth more than this. I was moved to Wandsworth prison, which was considered one of the worst prisons in Europe at the time and I remember being startled by a loud bang on my cell door. To my surprise I was greeted by two offenders who were serving 24 and 17 years respectively. Panic-stricken, I tried to mentally prepare myself for the fight of my life, but they didn’t want a brawl. They had observed me playing football a few days earlier in the gym and couldn’t believe that I was wasting such an amazing talent. They gave me encouragement and left me with a statement that I will never forget: “Don’t serve the time; let the time serve you." In other words, don’t wait until

The Phoenix – December 2015

you are released from prison to start pursuing your dream, start preparing yourself now. This inspired me to dedicate the remainder of my sentence to preparing myself mentally and physically. This was the first time any male role models had ever spoken anything positive into my life. From that point onwards I became intensely driven to achieving my goal. Shortly after being released in January 1990 I started playing amateur football for Haringey Borough. By November I signed my first professional contract with Leyton Orient. My performances drew the attention of Southend United Manager, Barry Fry who signed me for £100,000 in 1993. In 1994 I became Birmingham City’s record signing for £800,000. I also played for Nottingham County, Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United.

What happened after your knee injury in 1997?

After two years of rehabilitation I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. Once I realised that I could never perform to the level that I was accustomed to, there was only one thing left to do, retire. The funny thing was, I always had a feeling that I would lose everything I had worked so hard for, don’t ask me why, it’s just a feeling I had. So when my career was cut short through injury, I was not overly surprised. After football

speaks of a piecemeal third world war, the message of mercy is necessary to make us able to reconcile and build bridges. This is not the time to renounce

having the Jubilee or to be afraid. We need it more than ever. We must live it wisely, but also with courage, and with spiritual enthusiasm, looking ahead with

hope, despite the attacks of hate. Pope Francis guides us and invites us to have faith in the Spirit of the Lord that accompanies us.”

I invested most of my money in business ventures to ensure that my family and I could have a financially stable future. However, I was defrauded by people who I trusted and I lost everything. My house was repossessed; I lost my business and contact with my children and eventually I found myself homeless.

merous occasions that if I ever wanted to experience His power and glory; I would have to give up what I loved doing the most. For me this was a humbling experience because for the first time I had to admit that I had an addiction that I was powerless to overcome. Emancipation seemed unattainable, I was stuck and felt that there was no way out. A few nights before my baptism, I got down on my knees and pleaded with God from the bottom of my heart to take my addiction away as I did not want to remain a slave to it any longer. As soon as I got baptised God answered my prayer. I can honestly say that it was the power of God that transformed my life because I haven’t smoked or even craved for cannabis since that day on 19 December 2004.

nothing is achieved without hard work, determination and perseverance. After 23 years of being addicted to marijuana I was delivered by the grace of God. My life proves that with faith and the word of God nothing is impossible for the Lord. Today God has miraculously replenished Ricky Otto’s life. He has a passion and desire for helping others and dedicates his time to ministering and evangelising across the UK. In January 2016 Ricky will be ordained and installed as an associate Pastor of Living Waters Community Church in Handsworth, Birmingham. Ricky is also the Founder and Director of Living Xperience Consultancy; which develops and facilitates bespoke empowerment programmes throughout West Mercia for offenders and those on the periphery of offending. How did you know that God was calling you?

When I was at the peak of my football career, I used to stand in the middle of numerous games in front of crowds of 20,000 fans and ask myself this question: “What am I going to do after football because life surely won’t get any better than this?” God would always answer me be saying: “You’re going to serve Me.” Full of pride, I totally dismissed what I heard because I didn’t want to become a Christian because I thought people would think I’ve gone mad. After my football career a very close friend of mine passed away. At the funeral I was standing by the graveside watching the coffin going into the ground, then I heard God say to me; “Look up”, as I did God said: “What do you see?” I observed people smoking marijuana, overindulging in alcohol, some were laughing and joking while others were complaining about how hungry they were. Then God spoke to me again and said: “Is this what your forsaken me for?” I truly believe God was giving me a glimpse of how the people who I called friends would show the same disrespect at my funeral. I was convicted there and then, I knew it was time to completely give my heart to God and let Him take control of my life.

What advice would you give to someone who is struggling with an addiction?

Admitting that you are an addict is the first step. I would advise anyone who is struggling with an addiction to seek professional help. If the person is a believer, then I would also encourage them to notify their Pastor and connect themselves to a prayer team who will offer support and spiritual counselling. Like most things in life,

Describe your miracle.

Even after I dedicated my life to Christ, I battled with my addiction to cannabis. I stopped womanising and partying but each time I tried to break free from my addiction I failed. God told me on nu-

For families, a dedicated family worker is on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing advocacy, co-ordination of services within the hospices and with other agencies, and bereavement support. Each of the three Acorns hospices; Acorns in Birmingham, Acorns in the Black Country, based in Walsall and Acorns for the Three Counties, in Worcester, aims to offer a home-from-home environment. Children and young people can take part in arts and crafts sessions and have access to toys, books,

DVDs, IT equipment and computer games. State-of-the-art hydrotherapy pools and multisensory rooms are also available to help promote wellbeing and relaxation. It is this network of care both inside and outside the hospice, which is vital to help families feel equipped to cope at every stage of their child’s life. Acorns vision is that every child and young person living in the region that is life-limited or lifethreatened should receive the specialist care and support they need. It costs over £9 million a year for Acorns to run its care services and it relies heavily on the community to fund the majority of its activities. Whether it’s volunteering in a shop, breaking a fundraising record or trying something out of the ordinary, the charity is always on the look-out for people to help support its work and its vision. Whatever your strengths or interests, this support is invaluable to help Acorns continue to provide the best possible care for children and their families.
