Her Majesty’s actual birthday is April 21, but national celebrations are being organised over May and June and the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Concillor Ian Brookfield, said: “Last year our Queen became the longest-serving British monarch in history and this year she will celebrate her 90th birthday. Art Show Brings Communities Together Inside Birmingham Cathedral For Chinese New Year

O

n the evening of 7 February this year, Birmingham Cathedral will host an interactive art show for Chinese New Year. With the lights of the Cathedral dimmed, visitors from Birmingham’s diverse communities are invited to experience the lightbased artwork, ‘Midlight’, along with a special service led by the The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Birmingham, and a performance from a Chinese choir. Viewers are invited to sing with the choir and afterwards spend time to interact with the artwork and meet the artist.

As part of Birmingham’s Chinese New Year celebrations, British-Chinese artist Aowen Jin will curate a magical soundreactive art show, with a special service lead by the Dean of Birmingham. Midlight is an impressive field of 2,000 lights and tens of thousands of fibre optic cables, which change colour and brightness as people talk or sing to the work. Visitors can even tweet to @himidlight to control its colour, creating a unique experience for every visitor.

The Very Revd Catherine Ogle, Dean of Birmingham said: “It’s a real pleasure for us to host Aowen Jin’s interactive and beautiful art work to celebrate Chinese New Year. I am looking forward to welcoming members of the Chinese community and many visitors to this special and unique event” Aowen Jin said: “I designed Midlight as an instantly accessible artwork that anyone could interact with, whether young or old, British or international, whatever language they speak, and whatever their background.” “I am so delighted to have the chance to bring communities together through art with this work inside the Cathedral. It’s a magnificent building in the heart of the city, and one that is so quintessentially British. By inviting the Chinese and other communities into this sacred, special place to celebrate Chinese New Year, I really believe we can bring them closer to Birmingham’s cultural heritage. That’s such an honour for me as an artist.” Doors open on this free event at 6pm, with the service starting at 6:30pm, and doors closing at 8pm. Midlight is supported by Birmingham Hippodrome, British Chinese Project and Arts Council England.

Showing the strength to break down professional and cultural barriers Despite personal struggles, 46 Years on Dr Saroj Duggal and Crownsway Insurance Brokers Ltd are stronger than ever

F

rom humble beginnings after settling in Birmingham from East Africa in 1968, Dr Saroj Duggal, and Crownsway Insurance Brokers have gone from strength to strength. “I have always had the ambition to study and further myself,” explained Dr Saroj Duggal as she recalled her first few years in the UK, “I wanted to be a Doctor, but things were so bad back in Africa, my parents couldn’t send any money to support me and my 2 younger brothers, so I had no choice but to find a job.” While her relatives over here were encouraging her to get jobs in the factories, with some typing experience, Saroj decided to apply for a job with Unity Finance, and attended her interview with the then Mr Dharam Vir Duggal, who is now her husband and a Doctor (PhD) himself, back on the 10th May 1968. “It was my first interview ever, and now here I am 46 years later, it has proved to be my last. I started 3 days later, and made a lot of changes to the business, coming from a business oriented background in Africa, Mr Duggal found that I was in tune with the company hence I became his

lucky charm and he is proud to have me as his wife” After 2 years, on her birthday, the 21st October 1970, Saroj and Dharam got married. “Back then, inter-caste marriage was a sin in our culture, and as he belonged to the Punjab side, and I belonged to the Mumbai (Gujrat) side, I was totally thrown out of my community, not even my parents would talk to me. I didn’t know where to go or what to do.” Saroj threw herself into further studies, after taking night classes for the previous 2 years, and venturing out more scope for the business, determined to prove everyone wrong. The couple have had 4 beautiful daughters, who have all blossomed into exceptional young women in their respective field, despite negativity from her relatives at not having a son, “It didn’t matter to me, I was a daughter and I chose my own path and have succeeded, which is exactly what my children will do. I am so proud of my daughters, and they will carry on my name” Dharmista, Janita, Jagruti and Neelam have all gone on to do just that, forging their own way through this world, with the youngest, Neelam, looking to take

over the reigns at Crownsway after working alongside her parents for the last 10 years. “As long as my daughters are happy with what they are doing, and who they choose to marry, then we are happy for them,” beamed Saroj, “Seeing them happy makes me happy.” In 1970 the Duggals decided to move to being purely in the Insurance industry and changed the name of the company to Crownsway Insurance Brokers, named after inspiration from the Queensway which was being built at the time. “We were the first Asians in this industry, and as I can speak 5+ languages, and my husband can speak 3+, we could understand the needs and requirements of the community who couldn’t understand English in those days.” With a penchant for helping those who could not get insurance for any number of reasons, ranging from convictions and bad claim histories to imprisonment, Crownsway offer standard and non-standard covers to help their clients. They also provide education to the community as to how insurance and claims actually work. Crownsway became under-

writers for Lloyds of London, and the company branched out into something new, after approaching BT to put a project proposal forward to benefit SME’s. It blossomed into a great relationship, with BT venturing out products in their company through Crownsway and bonded the business relationship even further as Crownsway has been using BT Services for nearly 46 years. Scott Towns, Managing Director for BT Local Business stated, “Through our on-going close business relationship with Crownsway Insurance Brokers over the years, we have continually supported Dr Saroj Duggal through the growth of her business and the integration of new technologies, such as the latest telephony solutions, IT infrastructure and other leading edge initiatives which we believe have helped her to lead the way within her industry and local community.” “We see ourselves as a true partner to Dr Saroj Duggal’s business and look forward to continuing our strong relationship in the future.” Through all this, as an Asian woman in business, life was not easy, as Saroj explained, “I wanted to break the chain. I was a very for-

I never looked back, and I fought for every step that I took forward. It took nearly 10 years for my family to come back around following our marriage, and that time was the toughest.” Saroj’s incredible work ethic was evident even after the birth of each of her daughters, being back at work after no less than 3 days, with the baby in one hand and typing with the other. It is hoped that the clinicians will

Dr Quinn commented on the importance of doctors sharing their experience on an international level, and said: “I can’t imagine doing anything in my career more important than training a country’s clinicians for the first time in the assessment and treatment of brain injury, and that is why I am so passionate about it. Professor Powell, Trustee of the Nasirullah Foundation and visiting professor at the University

y name is Alison (meaning “truthful warrior maid”) and I chose the surname Bajaican to represent and reflect on my heritage. It signifies the bringing together of two people from two very different cultures. The theme of bringing people together continues as part of my interest in “net-knitting”. It’s easy to attend networking events, exchange a few cards and not do anything with the conversations you had or contacts you made. It takes more work to recall those conversations when you meet someone else who needs help with an issue and then take the initiative to introduce two strangers to one another. Some communities do this better than others. I was told in 1996 that African-Caribbean people don’t do this very well. I began a search to find out why. Opportunity met preparedness when I was handed a list of e-mail addresses in 2002 at a TUC Black Workers Conference. I had spoken to a motion highlighting the need for more effective communication within the workplace. Key information was missed, held back or offered after the event had occurred. I had suggested we delegates take information sharing into our hands and this gave birth to “National Nubian Networking”. The TUC hold an annual Black Workers conference and Conference 2016 will be held at TUC, Congress House, London on 15 - 17 April. Delegates are usually affiliated to UK trade unions but guest

doubt been the best career move I could have made, as I don’t think I would have progressed as quickly as I have without it.” Sales Office Manager at Signfab, Julie Brett, said: “From day one Curtis has displayed a professional and efficient attitude to his work, completing projects to a high standard and in a timely manner. “He started off in manufacturing and production before being promoted to the sales office after continuously showing enthusiasm in developing his skills further and learning more about different aspects of the business. Other colleagues and managers in the firm have also been quick to heap high praise on Curtis and the way in

which he conducts his work. “We have grown significantly in the last few years and when the opportunity to create a senior manager position presented itself, we had no hesitation in offering the role to Curtis, as he is definitely worthy of it.” James Norris, Assistant Principal for Commercial Development at Walsall College, commented: “Apprenticeships provide young people with the opportunity to gain valuable skills and real work experience that will lead to greater employment prospects in the future. However they are also a fantastic way for businesses to develop new talent and pass their knowledge on to the next generation of workers.

problems all over Europe. It’s a far cry for a boy growing up in inner-city Birmingham, but an inspiration to any child (boy or girl), from any background, with aspirations that goes beyond everyday expectations. Dr. Chamberlain spoke at George Dixon Academy, in Edgbaston, in the city, to expand and excite the minds of Year 9 pupils about just how exciting Mathematics could be, in career choices, and its massive impact on everyday life. Dr Chamberlain stated that; “Mathematics can be used in almost every job situation. Bio-dynamics, for example, is widely used in sports, and the movement, getting the most out of athletes, today.” The former pupil of Lee Bank Infant School describes

himself as; “A Mathematical Modeller who looks at real world problems and finds a mathematical way to solving it.” He stated ; “At school I was not the best at Mathematics nor at first was I was very passionate about it.” This came as a shock to the pupils who listened with intent. But one day Dr Chamberlain’s Father (a former worker at the now de-funked Longbridge car plant) told him that, ‘You don’t need anybody’s permission to be a Great Mathematician.’ Profound words which has been his bedrock ever since. From this point Dr Chamberlain pursued mathematics with passion and enthusiasm. After doing a Masters degree at Loughborough University, Dr Chamberlain at first taught

Following on from this, Dr Chamberlain worked as a professional mathematician in a variety of industrial sectors, solving problems that scientists and engineers find challenging to complete. He wrote mathematical simulations and models for Formula One cars, Aircraft Engines, and developing an effective response to Natural disasters. While working as a pro-

fessional mathematician, Dr Chamberlain studied and completed his PhD in Mathematics. This involved extending a 350 year old mathematical theorem and could be applied to explaining the world economical crash. “You see, Mathematics does matter,” he told the now starryeyed Year 9 group. “You should never see the pressure – You should always see the challenge” he told them. Asked about how Dr Chamberlain feels to be part of Speaker’s for School Initiat-

ive, he replied “To have an opportunity to help children live and believe in their dreams is humbling,” About the near future Dr Chamberlain stated: “This is an area that I take seriously, but my main line of work is as professional mathematician which God has blessed me with wonderful adventures and experiences. God willing, I can continue this and take it to another level and to inspire the next generation.” “I feel very blessed and I would like to give God all the glory”

irmingham is currently experiencing record numbers of visitors, mass job creation, and large focus on infrastructure, and it would appear that the city is finally being recognized as the place to be. The budding entrepreneurs from the city are seizing greater opportunities that are coming hand in hand with the greater investment that the city is seeing. Declared by Site Selection magazine as the best place in the UK and the second best in Western Europe for businesses to invest, it is evident that

the Birmingham Boom is underway, boasting the largest concentration of businesses outside of London. One such company is Crave & Lamb, who work with clients such as JustFab, Fabletics, Coral, BoyleSports, Arena Racing Company and The Camping and Caravanning Club. Based in the capital, the award-winning full service marketing and creative agency recently set up an additional office in Birmingham’s Two Snow Hill. Speaking about Crave & Lamb’s decision to open up in Brum, Media Strategy Director John Keane said;

‘Choosing Birmingham as our next location was a no brainer as the figures speak for themselves: 75% of Birmingham’s businesses are expecting to see growth by 2016 and we want to be a part of that. This city is growing at breakneck speed and it is so exciting to be able to both experience and contribute to that as a business.’ With companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, and SCC relocating to the city, it is evident that investors are increasingly considering alternatives to London.

his month marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Wolverhampton’s Mander Centre with a new centre manager joining and owner Benson Elliot kick-starting the £35 million refurbishment of the Centre, due for completion in Autumn 2017. The refurbishment is one of the most significant private sector investments in the city over the last 20 years.

It will help to enhance Wolverhampton’s retail offer, attract new retailers including a Debenhams store and create up to 150 new local jobs. It is a key time to be joining the Mander team as Commercial Retail Manager Robert Gough, who brings over 20 years of retail management experience including senior store manager roles with Debenhams, explains: “We want to retain the Mander’s rich heritage whilst

providing our customers with a really great modern retail experience. “It’s an exciting time for the people of Wolverhampton as the investment into the Centre will generate over 150 new jobs, as well as ensuring it becomes a fantastic place to shop and socialise.” Robert will draw on his strong track record of delivering high-quality customer service to ensure that the transformation of the Mander runs smoothly for retailers and customers alike. Being asked to perform with Gospel Central and a live band was an honour and to be able to showcase my voice to such a high class audience was unexplainable. My Christmas was great, spending time with family and friends and I started the new year deejaying at the hottest parties in Birmingham.

New Years Eve I supported The legendary Tim Westwood then New Years Day and the Saturday after I was at the brand new club Zaras with Rampage and Heartless Crew. Welcome home Craig! Go cop the Buffet by R Kelly!

I

am on the support campaign for RKelly not just because he has asked for fans to support it but because this really is a dope album. Take yourself to 12 to 2 The R albums and its all rolled into one. Those that love R&B music need to have a copy of this CD. The concept is all you can want

all you can hear meaning there are a variety of sounds to cater for RKellys young middle age and older audience. The promotion of this album hasn’t been the greatest due to bad marketing from the record label. But trust me, if you are into R&B and want to hear something truly banging then you need this in your life.

Everyone’s house should be fit to call a home, but for many that is far from reality. ocky Balboa, the former World Heavyweight Champion and beloved icon, is now living a quiet and lonely existence in his hometown of Philadelphia, far away from the

spotlight that he spent most of his life under. One day, while working in his restaurant, Rocky encounters an unfamiliar young man and what begins as a harmless conversation with a stranger soon evolves into

REVIEW

something far more personal when the young man reveals his true identity; his name is Adonis and he is the son of Rocky's late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. As a skilled but struggling boxer trying to follow in his father's

wORDS by antony brown

footsteps, Adonis enlists the help of Rocky to train him and get him ready for the next step in his career, but when secrets and past memories emerge, they find themselves fighting battles outside of the ring as well as in it. As a huge fan of the Rocky series, I don't mind admitting that my heart sank when this continuation was originally announced, especially since the franchise ended on such a high note with Rocky Balboa (2006) - a movie that blew everyone's expectations out of the water, as far-fetched as it may be. Then, when the premise of this continuation was announced, my heart sank even more. The concept of seeing a retired Rocky training a young prospect had been done before in the widely disregarded Rocky V (1990). Hell, even Sylvester Stallone himself has publicly chastised Rocky V on numerous occasions, so Creed seemed like a huge risk. However, if you fast forward to a few months before the release date, the first trailer hit and sent the internet community into a collective meltdown due to it's face-dissolving awesomeness. It was evident from that moment that this wouldn't be a repeat of Rocky V. Hell no...we were dealing with a completely different beast here. Creed is directed by Ryan Coogler, a fantastic young filmmaker who has taken Hollywood by storm. Creed is only his second feature film, which is absolutely astonishing. His direction is confident, stylish and skilful. The fight scenes in particular are handled magnificently, with long, smooth shots

that constantly put the audience at the forefront of the action. In fact, several times throughout the movie, entire rounds are filmed with just one, uninterrupted shot and it really adds to the realism. Coogler will next be seen directing Black Panther for the unstoppable juggernaut Marvel. It truly is phenomenal to see what this young man has achieved in such a short space of time. He is definitely a talent to keep an eye out for. One thing many people love about the Rocky franchise is the emotional impact they have on us as an audience and much of that is to do with the fantastic casting and wonderful performances from everyone involved and Creed is no different. Michael B. Jordan is an awesome addition to the Rocky legacy as Apollo's illegitimate child, Adonis and he definitely has the charisma and acting chops to headline his own series of films and with talks of a sequel already brewing, Creed 2 may be closer than we think. Then, of course, there's the man himself. The legend, Mr. Sylvester Stallone. Creed is very much Michael B. Jordan's movie, but Stallone is mesmerising. Sly rarely makes movies that truly push him as an actor - outside of the Rocky franchise and arguably Rambo: First Blood, most of his filmography is comprised of action movies in which he simply has to look tough, act tough and beat people up. While he succeeds on all fronts,

it's often easy to forget that when called upon, Stallone can really step up and deliver a truly wonderful performance and that's exactly what happens here. With a Golden Globe already on his mantle for his role in Creed, it would be fantastic to see him win the Academy Award, too. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the original Rocky, so it would be great to see him finally receive the recognition he deserves for introducing us to one of cinema's greatest and most beloved characters. Now, as with all sporting movies, you could argue that Creed is a little predictable. That isn't necessarily a criticism, but simply an acknowledgement of the unavoidable predictability of movies in this genre. When it's one person versus another or one team versus another, there are only ever going to be two possible outcomes...either they win, or they lose. So it could be said that Creed fails to break any new ground in that area, but it's so damn good that it doesn't even matter. Creed pays homage to the original series while remaining its own beast. It is a remarkable addition to the Rocky Legacy and the perfect platform from which to build a brand new franchise. Personally, I hope Creed is here to stay and I cannot wait for future instalments. I even hope they gradually become more and more ludicrous because let's face it... that's what we love about these movies.

CRAIG DAVID IS HOME S

o after selling 13 million albums having international stardom and sold out tours, the Southampton born and bred Craig David is back once again and shows he is still born to do it. 16 years ago this young man burst on the UK garage scene and crossed over into the pop charts with the massive hit single Rewind produced by the Artful dodger and ever since then he has been smashing it as one of the worlds biggest singers in R&B. The new CD is good looking with a swagger style but what makes this mans success for sure is his silky voice which is so distinct. Craig was off the UK scene for while as he lives in Miami America constantly selling out concerts where he DJ’s and also as you can see he has been working on his physical side too and must say he looks great. We have all missed Craig’s music especially his urban sound which made him who he is and like he says in many of his recent interviews, he is back to how he felt at 16 where he didn’t take life too seriously and is just out to have a good time. The energy shown by Craig shows that he really is enjoying himself and finally has creative control over his music. The promotion for Craig’s comeback has been extraordinary. We have seen him selling out arenas as a DJ worldwide and performing his own songs on set leading up to his new single release - When The Bassline Drops featuring Big Narstie. Craig’s official UK comeback was when he surprised the nation with a mind blowing performance with Reggie and Bollie on X Factor and after seeing how he tore the roof off Wembley sta-

dium it was official that our UK boy is back. So now we are seeing Craig go back to his musical roots and bringing back the Garage sound to the mainstream. His new album will feature underground acts like Big Narstie and boast production from White Nerd who hails from Manchester. Craig is at home and really keeping his ear to the ground

and working the music from the streets to the mainstream. We are happy to see he is back and for sure he deserves the title ‘legend’. Keep an eye out for TS5 shows and his own radio show on Capital Xtra where he records live from Miami. As we would say on the streets, Craig is going on sick!

ey Guys, well its been a while eh. Havent got a clue what to talk about this month lol so much happened over the past couple of months! Christmas has been and gone, we have seen in another new year and now we are just counting down the days until the next one - whoop whoop (bet you non of us will be ready for it when it happens anyway haha) December saw the birthday of my beautiful baby girl Caitlin and it was a big one - whatever happened to the little girl with her hair bunched up in her frilly little dresses and baby doll shoes - well I will tell you what happened - that baby girl only went and turned 18 on me - arghhhhhhhhhhhhh - how old do I feel.

The Top 10 1. Darth Vader Wall Light 2. Faux Plants 3. Deer Wall Art 4. Cocktail Flavoured Lip Balm 5. Multi Cooker 6. Magic, non-spill coffee cup 7. Honeycomb Party Lanterns 8. Flamingo Prints & Decorations 9. Elephant Jewellery 10. Fold Away Shopping Bag

It seems the norm that when our kids turn 18 the 1st thing they want to do is go clubbing so what do I do - well I go with them haha out partying with your mom - OMG i was like an unofficial security guard, do we ever turn the protectiveness off - errrr nope not when it comes to our kids. Well I think I can honestly say a good night was had by all, a hangover was in place the next day (not me by the way, the baby girl) and Im kind of hoping that maybe, just maybe shes been put off drinking - well one can wish cant they. Ive got a bit of news to announce - nooooooooooooooo not that kind of news lol I am very very very proud to announce that I have been asked to be patron of a new domestic violence charity, sodaHq.org

Over the past couple of months I have met so many amazing survivors, because thats what they are SURVIVORS of domestic abuse. Its very true what they say, no-one knows what goes on behind closed doors, and I have been moved by hearing peoples stories of what they have been through and what happened to them - well nows the time for these victims to come forward and turn themselves into survivors. I’ve found out that when people do finally escape domestic abuse, its never a planned escape and they have to leave with practically just the clothes they have on their backs - they have nothing - so over the next couple of months we are going to be asking if people would maybe donate some toiletries or toys so when these people do finally make the move to leave, we can at least give them the basics until they get back on their feet - so please watch this space and I will keep you all updated. Well thats it for now folks, but one things for sure - I will be back. So im signing out by wishing you all a very happy new year and see you all soon.

ollowing the success from the launch, Rule the Runway UK is back! Bigger, better and more exciting for the 2016 show. Dancing, fashion and music will take the audience on a musical journey. Dancers of all ages and genres will be entertaining as the music takes you from the early 1900's to modern times. The judging panel at Rule the Runway UK 2016 have now been announced as Khali Best (NTA award winner 2013, EastEnders actor), Holly Henderson ( Model & TV Personality), Simon Britton, (Director/ Producer), Stephan Pierre Mitchell (Actor/ Presenter) and Natacha Ashman (Miss Jamaica UK 2013). Rule the Runway UK was set up by Davida Wilkins and Natalie Maragh with a passion and goal to see Birmingham as a recognised city to host prestigious fashion events. Based on experience they had acquired within the fashion industry, they felt designers, models and creatives alike were being overshadowed by cities such as London and Manchester and wanted this to change. Strongly feeling that the fashion industry was plagued by

to be aged between 18- 36 years old. In 2016 the organisers plan to raise even more money for mental health. All money raised from guest admission to 'Model

Behaviour' (the after party) at 6 on Broad Street and the raffle will be donated to Birmingham Mind. Khali Best will also be in attendance alongside the other members of the judging panel to do 'meet and greet'. Both Davida and Natalie have a strong personal connection with mental health and feel strongly that changes with the way mental health is perceived in the public are overdue. Raising money to support services provided by Birmingham Mind gives them both a sense of achievement and they hope to do more for the charity in the years to come. The final model contestants, dancers, designers and performers will be invited on to the catwalk for the main fashion show and competition on Saturday 27th February 2016 at The Crescent Theatre, Brindley Place, Birmingham.

Surviving The Start-Up; My Three Top Music Business Tips For 2016

"

T

he music business," Hunter S Thompson wrote, “is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.” I started my own career as a music lover unaware of this quote by the author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I would soon learn. It was 1997 and I was standing in a wet Birmingham backstreet with a brown envelope in one hand and a record case in the other, looking up at the shop I had rented three days earlier. My record case was packed with fresh vinyl treasures; Missy El-

liott's "Sock It 2 Me", Aaliyah's "4 Page Letter", Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack" and "Mo Money Mo Problems" by the Notorious B.I.G. The brown envelope contained keys to all the shop's doors and windows on a bit of old string, along with a note from the landlord explaining that if I should ever put on all the lights at once the fuses would blow. This was Punch Records, day one. Eighteen years later and the vinyl is all sold, the fuses are indeed all blown and the shop is closed. But Punch Records is going stronger than ever; based now in Birmingham's creative village of Eastside. Here are some of tips I learned

along the way which helped me to grow my business into an award-winning music development agency.

TIP #1 - Don’t be a fan, be a businessman!

Back in 1997 the shelves at Punch Records were piled high with my favourite vinyl. Dub plates. Rare pressings. Collectible memorabilia. The stock probably cost me more to buy than I would ever make from selling it - if I could ever see it go. So instead of a sales assistant I hired a local DJ and we span records all day. That's when I learned the real value of a shop full of fans. I made some calls, and we hosted the region's first store-based

l At Millennium Point with Akala - Bass 15

DJ competition, with a national champion in the room. Profitable partnerships with record labels and music magazines soon followed, and Punch became a hub for DJ workshops, for music promotion and for new artists to get noticed.

TIP #2 - If you build it, they will come!

In 2005 I started BASS - a music festival with no venues, no acts and no budget. We'd been successfully running events and showcases for two years. It felt what Birmingham really needed was a new music festival to pull it all together. I had a vision of a season of Soul, R&B and Hip Hop in a sun-drenched urban park setting - way too expensive. When summer arrived it turned out to be drenched by torrential rain and floods. Glastonbury was nearly washed away. Artists and audiences wanted to get out of the rain, giving us the chance to offer the network of backstreet clubs and warehouses we used regularly as mainstream

l At the Institute with Blackstreet - Bass 15

venues. Sponsors came on board and the press took notice. BASS celebrated ten successful years this October.

TIP #3 - If you mess up, ‘fess up!

In the summer of 2011 were ready to launch our first Jamaican-themed, Olympic-branded festival. This was to honour the world-beating Jamaican team who were holding pre-event training in Brum. Then news reached us that the brand we used Jamaica Raw was not the one, especially within polite society in Kingston. It would soon be featured in all our promotions. Usain Bolt would be seeing this word fifty feet high and we didn't think we could outrun him. So I acted immediately and redesigned a whole stack of our promotional literature. Re-branded as Jamaica Live, the festival gave us our biggest ever one-day footfall, with highlights broadcast nationally as part of the 2012 Olympics. There is nothing more satisfying

than launching your own business start-up, especially as part of an industry you are passionate about. Today we are touring some of those musicians whose records I stocked in my shop - Angie Stone, Tarrus Riley, Channel One Sound System. With the right attitude and the right team you will make it down that "long plastic hallway" and through the door at the end. Ammo Talwar MBE is the CEO of Punch @punchrecords

Nollywood Film Producer, Theodora Ibekwe, A ‘Great’ In A Tough Industry

U

K Nollywood superstar, Theodora Ibekwe-Oyebade, was recently honoured with a BEFFTA Rising Star award to add to an already bulging array of awards that has made her one of the industries’s most sought after figures in the African-UK entertainment industry. The multi-award winner who regularly graces the cover of UKAfrican magazines, is also the producer of the highly successful move – Shameful Deceit as well as the founder of the highly successful annual ‘Miss Elegant’ international beauty pageant. Born and raised in Edo State, in Nigeria, Theodora, who originally hails from Owerri in Imo State, was always a star, having been considered a child prodigy, by her primary tutors, at a very young age, and today she is one of the most respected figures in her field, both here and abroad.

Despite all her worldly acclaim, though, from an early age, her parents had a different path for her. They wanted her to pursue her education as far as she could take it, which led to a certificate in Education at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State and later to study Accounting at the University of Lagos. But it was the entertainment industry that would always be her calling and with this, after university, she moved to England to seek her dreams. A chance encounter led her to the lead role in a new Nollywood movie and on to star roles in other movies. In 2013, she took on her first role as a producer for the movie ‘Shameful Deceit;’ which recorded the highest attended African movie premiere in any Odeon cinemas in the UK. She also recently produced her first stage drama Franz Kafka's

"Metamorphosis" adapted by Nick Pelas. The multi-award Theodora founded the Miss Elegant International beauty pageant in 2009 which propelled her into the limelight before she took the pageant one step further with the Miss Elegant International TV show – aired on BEN TV. An avid entrepreneur at heart, she also became a Director of Starlywood, which is a competition-based talent show, aimed at discovering young Black talent in the UK. after which, she created Theodora PR, a media and consultancy PR firm for Black talent in the Diaspora. Offers have pouring in from African celebrities like Clarion Chukwurah, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, John Utaka, Ken Smart, Pauline Long and Dayo Olomu for her to promote and consult on their entertainment projects,

Proud to be named as one of the founding producers of the UK Nollywood Movie Industry, she has supported and helped raise funds for various charities and has received 15 awards. She has also spearheaded many events including pageants and movie premieres. Recently, she was made the Face of ZAFAA (Zulu African Film Academy Awards) 2013-14. “Theodora Ibekwe has set an example for many people who wish to start from nothing to something,” said BEFFTA Awards founder, Pauline Long. “A ‘Great’ in a tough industry that’s hard to crack.”

Stars shine bright at Golden Globes 2016

I

t's the awards season, with the Golden Globes seen as the first of the many Hollywood award ceremonies. And it was certainly off to a good start with the Golden Globe red carpet getting the fashion police's nod of approval. Celebrating the best looks from the Globes, here is what your favourite stars wore on the night. Heidi Klum for one looked ready to let loose. The 42-year-old arrived at The Weinstein Company and Netflix after party sponsored by Heineken in Beverly Hills wearing her shimmering Marchesa gown. The model and ex-wife of British singer, Seal, who stunned in the silver fringed frock, couldn't stop smiling while posing on the red carpet. The cover girl's sleeveless number appeared to be slightly sheer, revealing a hint of skin beneath the metallic texture. Heidi showed off her cleavage in the low cut dress, which was

cinched at the waist with a black belt. The dazzling gown also had geometric shapes on the skirt, adding depth to the look. She donned silver heels, which remained mostly hidden beneath her floor-length frock. The beauty added Lorraine Schwartz jewelery to her ensemble, rocking cherry blossom earrings and a diamond flower brooch on her belt, as well as an Ofira jewels ruby ring. Other beauties that sparkled on the night included actress, Laverne Cox who bared her toned arms in a white Elizabeth Kennedy gown, pop star, Lady Gaga who wore an Atelier Versace dress and killer heels by Brian Atwood, British beau, Kate Winslet who looked wonderful in a Ralph Lauren dress and siner/actress, Jennifer Lopez. JLo decided to cover up for the Golden Globes and showed up wearing a Giambattista Valli gown and Harry Winston jewels.

l Heidi Klum - She’d look good in a bin bag, let alone this!

l Jennifer Lopez - Great Dress, & colour, just not J-Lo

l Lady Gaga - Breathing difficulties!

l Kate Winslet - We like Kate, but whoops!

l Laverne Cox - Could’ve done better...

l Jennifer Laurence - Simplicity at its Finest

l Kylie Jenner - Sweet & Angelic, shame about the hair

l Kate Hudson - Stunning & stole the show!

David Harding releases ‘The Mysterious Disappearance at An Huitz’

T

he meaning of existence comes in several constructions in every age of humankind. Being a learned man in metaphysics and Aristotelian logic, author David Harding shares his philosophical viewpoints in fiction novel “The Mysterious Disappearance at An Huitz” (published by Xlibris UK). Set in fictional Paxia, this alien world is facing the next step in its history. It follows the story’s protagonist Airon, who is a spiritual teacher. He becomes increasingly enlightened as he encounters other characters on his journey. The ultimate mystery is the disappearance of his pupils, leaving Airon in suspicious circumstances and the excerpts of his work in their wake. Harding’s first novel reminds readers that everything has an end no matter how complicated

life gets. “Believing in one’s self justifies the means and something will always come through for us,” Harding adds. An excerpt of the book: The origin of mind in the universe is often described as the motive cause for the way the universe is. How does it come to be arranged in the way it does? Is our cognition part of this arrangement? What is nature? And how can something like time be said to have its own perspective on its origin in the same way that existence, once brought about, retranslates the universe from its perspective? These are the questions which the mind problem leads us through, and we will attempt to do them justice.

Liverpool Legends bring their hilarious show to Birmingham

T

wo of the greatest strikers Liverpool ever had and a midfielder who played a starring role in the club’s legendary night in Istanbul are joining forces to give Reds fans in the West Midlands an evening to remember and loads of laughs. On March 4 the three Liverpool Legends are taking their hilarious show to Birmingham’s O2 Institute. Robbie Fowler, Didi Hamann and John Aldridge wowed Liverpool supporters on the pitch and

have a wide selection of hilarious tales to tell about their exploits on it and off it. On the pitch they can talk about league titles, European Cups, FA Cups, League Cups and how they won a massive haul of medals between them. Off the pitch they can talk about incidents and adventures that they probably wouldn’t be able to share on TV. 5Times, the Former Liverpool Players Association, have sent LFC Legends to every corner of the country and all around the world to meet, greet and entertain

Reds fans who love their club but don’t exactly find it easy to get to Anfield every week. It gives the legends the chance to reconnect with people they were heroes for – and that feeling is mutual, the players know they wouldn’t have these stories to tell and those memories to share without the ‘twelfth man’ who helped them across the line so many times. More importantly it helps the players to raise money for some very good causes. In recent years the Association has raised tens of thousands of pounds for local and national charities. The night in Birmingham will get underway with a Meet and Greet session where supporters can shake hands with their heroes, get some autographs and pose for a selfie. The show itself kicks off shortly afterwards and by then, if it is like any of the other shows from around the world, the atmosphere will be like a mini-Anfield.

new exhibition has been assembled at Wolverhampton Art Gallery and promises to take the audience on a journey through the history of toy construction kits. Assembled Dreams: A History of Building Toys features a range of classic toys collected by the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Arts and Heritage service, and well as loans from the author and toy historian Brian Salter. Together, they tell the story of people’s fascination with toy construction kits over the last 170 years. Featuring more than two dozen different construction kits and models spanning more than a century of history, the exhibition charts developments from the wooden blocks used by the German Kindergarten movement in the 1840s right through to Lego Architecture, introduced in 2008. It also explains how Lego became the largest toy maker in the world – and how the plastic interlocking brick so commonly associated with the Danish manufacturer was actually first devised in the mid-1930s by British toy maker Kiddicraft. Councillor John Reynolds, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “Building toys have been part of the childhood

irmingham Royal Ballet Soloist William Bracewell this week won the Outstanding Male Performance (Classical) award in the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards 2015. William was nominated for his role as King Louis XIV of France in David Bintley’s new one-act ballet The King Dances, which received its world premiere at Birmingham Hippodrome in June 2015. Bintley created the role of King Louis XIV on William, a role which saw him take on the character of the 14-year-old King of France. The winners of the National Dance Awards were announcedon Monday at a ceremony in central London. Other nominees in the same category were Matthew Ball (The Royal Ballet), Erik Cavallari (Scottish Ballet), Kimin Kim (St Petersburg Ballet Theatre) and Vadim Muntagirov (The Royal Ballet). standing Repertoire in 2002, and in 2011 Director David Bintley won the National Dance Award in the category of Best Classical Choreography for his creation of Cinderella. The Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards celebrate the vigour and variety of Britain’s thriving dance culture. They are the only professional awards in the UK dedicated to dance and are presented by the Dance Section of the Critics’ Circle, which brings together more than 50 dance writers. The National Dance Awards were established by the Critics’ Circle in 2000 to highlight the astonishing range of dance on offer in the UK.

This funding will enable WATCH to deliver a Community Action Project in Hillfields until July 2017. Centre Manager, Trish Evans, said “we are delighted to receive this grant to expand our work in the local community, this project will be interactive for local residents through the use of our community Radio Station Hillz FM to identify and tackle local issues.” Residents of Hillfields will be able to receive radio training and develop new skills while working together to create an action plan to improve their neighbourhood. Our newly assigned Community Engagement Officer will be out and about in the community to meet local residents and find out about what the needs are. Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that a new permanent Holocaust memorial would be built next to the Houses of Parliament in Victoria Tower Gardens. The January 27 memorial date is significant as it is the same date that the Nazi's biggest and most infamous concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated in 1945. "While Holocaust Memorial Day is timed with Auschwitz's liberation, we must also pays tribute to the victims of all genocides, including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur," Mayor Cllr Price said. rayer is about life and problems it often brings. All life is Good potential object and is beyond all definitions and limits. Life is the existence of God and without God, life would not be physical and material existence. The source of all moral obligation, and the “greatest conceivable existent is God. We need God and, we need one another. Effective prayer is to accomplish a purpose which will bring about an intended result. The revelation of God’s nature is the power of words in every languages. The term word may refer to a spoken word or to a written word, or sometimes to the abstract concept behind either. Spoken words are made up of units of sound called phonemes,

and written words of symbols called graphemes. Every alphabet of a language is a sign of the spirit. An alphabet is a standard set of letters used to write any system of characters in symbols or graphemes. It represent any system of sounds or voice of the spoken language, in which each character represents a word. This is a signs which a language is use to communicate with God .In order to see God as a whole is what you can retain and be name. That is the nature for God creation. reetings in the major faith traditions - Islamic, Om Shanti, Sat Sri Kal, May the Peace of the Lord be with you and Nam Myho Renge Kyo. May I take this opportunity to congratulate The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community West Midlands for organising the 1st Interfaith Conference to explore the nature of ‘God’ in various religions. We meet at the most propitious time of our history when humankind is engaged in a tussle involving spiritual and material values. The latter have been bedevilling us for centuries and yet, we don’t seem to have the right set of answers to counter the tensions we experience on a daily basis. Today I wish to make a small but hopefully, vital contribution to this august body, The Ahmadiyya Movement, an organisation that I have been following for years – starting with my native land – Guyana. For years, this organisation has been working assiduously to contextualise its religiosity within a broader realm of the universality of faith, also described as faith renewal. It is around this cornerstone that I would, if I may, wish to make a few pertinent observations on the ‘The Power of Faith’ as reflective of the range of religious traditions and customs that abound in our world. The values of power and the consecration of faith or faiths are seemingly interlinked, if not

interconnected in this equational crux.

Power

On the one hand, most definitions of ‘Power’ tend to single out individuals, agents and agencies as these act as influentials, facilitators, persuaders, proponents or opponents of change and transformation. There are leaders, strategists, tacticians and visionaries amongst this group of power brokers. They all function on the basic principles of experience, knowledge and a distinctive ability to command authority and respect of, or from others. Power is best seen through the lens of political, economic, social, cultural and civic bodies that espouse a set of common objectives that followers are encouraged to genuflect (on). Yet, when that power becomes obsessive, the tendency for its nullification becomes apparent –questions are asked such as, is, what type of power is this? Is it being used in the best interest of all concerned? Or is it merely self-impositional? Consequently, the ascension of ‘Divine Power’ and its utility is perhaps a perfect antidote in countering the negative impact of ‘material’ power.

Faith

On the other hand, ‘Faith’ is an endowment of values, or better still, spirituality which is

akin to the Godhead. The numerous denominational faiths –be they Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism and other modern religious bodies – often obscures the real essence of faith and the exercising of it in modern times. So what is actual faith? And how can our faith reflect the Godhead belief

key to scientific progress in every conceivable form and principle of speech; this fact is completely overlooked. Words is the universal language, the same in all countries, in all ages; it is unchangeable and immutable. Everything has two faces, a face of its own, and a face of its Lord; in respect of its own face it is nothingness, and in respect of the face of God it is being. Seeking the face of the invisible, is the power of words which connect us within the mind and heart, to link the totality of the language of universe. To experience the face of God is to experience his presence. Therefore, the inner nature of existing beings has both an invisible, internal character and a visible, external form which communicate to itself.

In man, the mind is the subject and motivator of the body; thus the body moves according to the direction of the mind and nature is the servant of mind. Mind is the arbiter of life. The body reflects and resembles the mind, which is inner nature. Though the mind cannot be seen, it has its own’’ form’’, and the body, which reflects and resembles the mind, assumes a corresponding form. T h e e l e ments of nature

between various religious denominational groups? Is faith a representation of who we are, or what we ought to be? Does faith illustrate the belief in human progress? Or is it a mere ‘passing’ or handing down’ of traditions and values which are often difficult to reconcile in our world today? How should we really proceed to make our faith holistic for all to understand and appreciate? Indeed, depending on the context and form, theologians or religious experts including media commentators,

on assumptions, presuppositions, prevarications and suppositions, sometimes widely exaggerated. Others use myths and symbols to ‘tell their stories’ of their own interpretation of how to ‘get closer to God’, without explaining the practicalities of faith and its antecedents. So the question is, brothers and sisters, how can the ‘Power of Faith’ be practiced within the confines of the Godhead, often described as Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent.

Philosophy

As typical examples and exemplars, Buddhists base their philosophy of faith on the law of Cause and Effect’ the Dharma or nirvana, using the Lotus Sutra. Christians refer to the triune principle of The Father, Son and Holy Spirit via the Holy Bible. Hindus refer to the Bhagvat Gita and other holy writs to explain various deities underpinning their devout nature. Muslims refer to the Father of God and the Brotherhood of Man as adherent principles when explaining their belief in Allah as the Most Merciful and Munificent. Sikhs utilise their Gurus’ teachings to manifest their recognition of the ‘Lord’ as sacrosanct in their daily lives.

The Phoenix – February 2016

of the universe are one with human nature. All living creatures pray for one cause, the articulation of our dependence on God and our interdependence with one another. At the very deepest level of reality we find a source which is the origin and the ground in which we find our identity and our uniqueness. And that source which is our origin and our ground is God and God simply means spirit, fire, wind and soul/ earth. Something non-physical, hidden for searching. This constitutes the oneness of God’s nature. The human brain is the nature of the universe and as the source for the spiritual transformational process which images Man, in the likeness of God.

invoke the realisation of faith as a potent force for good. Rather, our faith must be bounded by patience, humility, prayer, meditation, reflection, compassion, humility, tolerance and real examples based on truth-seeking. The tenet of Divine Wisdom is perhaps the foremost maxim of faith in action. It enables us to find solutions to intractable or complex problems that are traditionally ascribed as ‘the vicissitudes of life’. As we strive therefore, to (humanely) revolutionise our lives to the point of Enlightenment, let us remember that the Power of Faith remains a veritable crucible of our lives in this world and the next. May the Peace that surpasseth all understanding and the Blessings of the Creator continue to flow through every thought we conceive and every action we render. Thank you for listening.

Sierra Leone national consultation to rebuild export economy

A

national consultation kicked off in Sierra Leone in January to help the country’s small and medium enterprises reach new export markets, and re-orient an economy still reeling from the Ebola crisis towards sustainable growth. The stakeholder consultation, which took place in the capital Freetown, looked at ways to improve industrial product packaging in key sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing and manufacturing, to increase production and boost competitiveness. A major outcome was the formulation of a strategic action plan for Sierra Leone’s packaging industry,

developed by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Trade & Industry and the Sierra Leone Investment & Export Promotion Agency. Paulo Kautoke, Director of Trade at the Commonwealth Secretariat, which supported the Government’s consultation, reiterated the Commonwealth’s commitment to support Sierra Leone’s economy recovery by improving its export packaging. He said: “Good quality packaging and labelling is of critical importance to improving the competitiveness of Sierra Leone’s exports, to enable the country to increase its market access. That’s why it is important that key stakeholders, particularly the private

sector, have a forum and mechanism to discuss and plan the packaging needs of industry.” The consultation involved discussion of a study by the Commonwealth Secretariat which identified poor packaging as a serious impediment to Sierra Leone’s ability to export to global markets. The study found that a lack of national capacity in product packaging has been compounded by the fallout from the Ebola crisis which, according to the World Bank, resulted in a loss to the three affected countries – Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia - of at least US$2billion in forgone economic growth in 2014-2015. Executive of the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA), said the initiative would help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to emerge from traditional subsistence activities into higher value-added industrial manufacturing, agriculture and food processing activities. Mr Gbekie said: “When SMEs are able to connect to international markets, either directly or by supplier linkage programmes, the prospects for growth of the economy and job creation are particularly high. We are particularly excited about this project because our current strategy focuses on the promotion of sustainable supply chains as a means of helping SMEs add value to their products and services.”

L

ocal authorities are blocking smaller businesses from competing for public sector contracts, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has warned, in the light of new research from the Electrical Contractors’ Association that shows over two thirds of councils are neglecting to use a simplified procurement tool recommended for use across the public sector. FMB CEO, Brian Berry, said: ‘It’s no wonder that construction SMEs struggle to win public contracts, when even at the first hurdle, local authorities are failing them. Using standardised pre-qualification questionnaires like PAS

91 is crucial for reducing costs and ensuring that smaller companies have a level playing field in bidding for public sector contracts. This is why Central Government has mandated the use of this system and the Local Government Association has backed its use by local authorities. Without a consistent template, even the preliminary stages of a bid become resource intensive, lending an unfair advantage to the larger contractors who have the capacity to absorb paperwork. For smaller construction companies – 40% of whom fail to win 9 out of 10 public sector contracts – it creates another unnecessary barrier to what used to be an important market for them.”

How can credit unions help SMEs?

T

he answer lies in a possible New Year’s resolution for 2016 on an alternative approach towards helping and supporting the small firm sector. On the 16 January last, the West Midlands Credit Union held its annual general meeting (AGM) to discuss trends and other developments affecting credit unions and the financial industry as a whole. Undoubtedly, there has been phenomenal growth in the membership of credit unions in England including the Midlands. Yet the issue of closures by some of these entities has given rise to the state of credit unions in general. The idea of assisting to finance the productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is a matter that requires urgent consideration in light of the mixed fortunes enjoyed by traditional credit unions. Since the days of the Rochdale Pioneers, credit unions in England have been of tremendous service to members. Many have benefitted in a variety of ways by converting (savings) into actual payments or collateral to purchase personal and other necessary consumables. So how, can credit unions help start-ups or fledging small firms requiring an injection of capital to either introduce new goods and services or expand their market share? On the one hand, credit unions are capable of mobilising financial capital, servicing individual

members, lending money at affordable or discretionary rates, demonstrating collective selfhelp, being a viable alternative for high interest bank loans, and adapting to micro and macro market trends. On the other hand, SMEs are classified as business organisations with 1-50 plus employees, offering manufacturing, trading and services overall, contributing to over 90% of all UK economic activities, providing jobs, technology, skills, innovation and tax revenues, having slender resources but driven by thrift, independence and product orientation. Perhaps one typical example of some business owners choosing non-banking agencies is based on the following data: 4% consider they are ‘Other’ reasons for doing so, 27% regard such agencies as ‘Ease of Credit’, 52% consider ‘Speed of Approval’ and 37% consider ‘Better Pricing’ as the optional choice. Nevertheless, apart from examining the psychological and demand-side factors, credit unions should also devise a strategy for SME according to elements including:• The Nature of a Company (size, business age, sector, formalisation of management and accounting standards); • SME Choice of Banks (current banking relationships, do they have a primary bank for business? choice?) • Preference for Additional

Capital (personal money, borrowing from banks, additional partners and family & friends) • SME Engagement –Relationship Management (accessibility, knowledge, ability to understand and guide) • Considering the 4Ps of Marketing (product, pricing, promotion and premises (or place) As an ‘opportunity value’ of financing, credit union bosses may wish also to assess the behavioural elements of SMEs along the lines of the number of firms that are less risky, sources of past and future financial capital, opportunity for banking facilities and the reasons for owners wanting to avail products and services from non-banking institutions. In addition, the ‘SME Productivity Value Chain’ for credit unions could be based on awareness, promotion, engagement, communication, relationship management, channels, flexibility and governance in terms of organisational enhancement and operational processes.

AFTERNOON TEA WITH JACYNTH A IVEY

l Rameri Moukam, Founder Member Pattigift Therapy CIC

Emancipate ourselves from mental slavery

“R

ameri is my spiritual name when I became an Ausarian. My previous name was Sonia Francis, and the two are different people.” Not many people could say that without someone thinking is there some schizophrenia going on? Rameri enthusiastically shares the meaning of her name, ‘My vitality and life force is focused on the love and joy of God, my actions reflect my identification with God,’ Sonia was British born and identified, describing herself as a British acculturated Caribbean woman who as part of her racial identity development started to engage with spiritual practice.

What is your racial identity, where was the beginning for you to suggest there is a middle?

The racial identity development model was developed by William Cross who describes stages of identify development for black people starting with children soaking up society’s messages about race, moving through different stages to a sense of security about one’s racial identity. “When I got to the middle of my racial identity I came to a realisation that there was more to life and living than simply the external, material things in life.” Along that journey and through a deepening understanding of Black psychology Rameri started to teach black studies, as it was called it then. “We used to be one page ahead of our students in the introduction to black studies. We started to explore what it meant to be black and what black psychology looked like.” “We realised that throughout our formative years we had not been taught anything about ourselves, the criteria for knowing ourselves was a Eurocentric.” In her formative years she was

raised in inner city Birmingham. The family moved to Droitwich in 1970 at the start of the riots. Rameri recalls that they were the only black family, as such she claims it was inevitable that she became completely acculturated into the European way of thinking and being with a lost sense of who she was. She describes feelings of herself and her siblings ‘fighting to be the same, fighting for equality’. Looking back she describes their way of thinking as European, as a way that along with her siblings they felt they ought to be aspiring to.

“I wasn’t born in Africa but Africa was born in me”

As part of Rameri’s racial iden-

tity development she clearly remembers that realisation that she was somehow different. If you were to meet Rameri, she is a most impressive and imposing woman, never to be confused with some one else or some one she is not. She describes how she began to immerse herself in all things black. ‘You start to do black studies; in my case I married an African. You change your religion to an African religion and so on.’ What was interesting is that through this journey of self-discovery Rameri had a realisation that she is acculturated British; she loves tea, the British language and English humour. She clearly knows that she is black and what it means to be African, ‘I wasn’t born in Africa but Africa was born in me” With a woman as passionate as developing an understanding herself, her identity and her African heritage, its no wonder she set up Pattigift Therapy. Pattigift, a BACP accredited service, was set up to introduce African centred black psychology as a way of supporting people of African heritage to develop their knowledge of self here in this country. What sets Pattigift apart is that they practice from an African perspective, a completely different worldview. In these austere times when many small businesses and third sector organisations are struggling Pattigift continues to exist as it clearly offers something different and more accessible than mainstream services.

“We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind."—Marcus Garvey

In addition to the therapeutic services, Pattigift offers a range of training and personal developments programmes each geared towards the journey of improving one’s self-knowledge. Each programme informed and shaped by her annual trips to the Black Psychology Conference in America. Rameri is very clear that “we as Black people need to come together to share our stories, deepen our understanding of the impact of historical forces on our emotional lives, detoxify our minds and spirits, revitalize ourselves and our relationships with each other, and learn and practice essential emotional

wellness skills.” The words of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song start to ring in my ears, ‘emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds’. This animated, spirited and energetic life force is also mother to two equally inspiring young adults. Rameri’s mothering and nurturing approach have been heavily influenced by black psychology. What she has learned and experienced over the years she has shared with her children. She describes her children as amazing, what mother wouldn’t? One is studying forensic psychology at master level and the other a degree in the psychology of sports and exercise. Both are clear about who they are and the legacy that they want

to leave behind.

Being the best you can be

The feeling of sitting in the ‘therapy chair’ become reality as Rameri turns the tables when I ask her what is the first question would be if I were to come for therapy. What’s brought you here? What it that has made the difference for you to be here? Tell me about your life starting with your parents, family upbringing, and life’s experiences. At the end of this interview I felt I needed to book a session with Rameri to begin to explore what’s going on in my own life.

Since meeting, we have kept each other updated with individual projects and I am proud to say that Danny and Anti-knife UK continues to stay active with daily updates on Facebook and Twitter reporting knife crime incidents but also community events keeping everyone far and wide - educated. “I am asked why I started campaigning and to be honest I just got fed up with reading about teenagers being killed on the streets of London. It wasn’t long after that, I realised it was actually happening all over the country. I was experienced in doing sponsored walks for various groups and organisations but I wasn’t experienced in campaigning. I will admit when I started campaigning I was totally wet behind the ears and had to basically teach myself all that I know now. Along with a small team of people, we decided to merge both campaigning and walking, this

project was called The People’s March. The People’s March was the biggest anti-knife march ever in London which attracted about 7,000 people from across London and ended with a concert in Hyde Park. I have sadly over the years met a number of families who have lost a family member to knife crime and though I had never met

their loved ones, I got to know their stories and in the end you actually feel like you did know their loved one. I am now on friends terms with many families but I have learnt to also respect the privacy of those families who prefer to keep a little distance. I am the first to admit I made mistakes along the way and may

of put my foot in my mouth or have upset people along the way but never on purpose. I don’t have all the answers and I am still learning everyday. I am supported by a great committee team and admin team who without their support, Anti-Knife UK may not be here. I am thankful for all of their hard work and though we have never expected awards AntiKnife UK has won a few including THE REDBRIDGE MAYOR AWARD in 2013 and THE CHRIS DONOVAN TRUST AWARD in 2014. In 2015 I was awarded the BCA medal for my campaign work and

though I am proud of it, I dedicate it to all those who have lost somebody to knife crime. In 2016 I hope to do more workshops in schools and continue to spread awareness against knife crime and visit other cities and

towns up and down the country. But I can only do this with the support of the Anti-Knife UK committee and the supporters of our organisation. We are pleased that two football teams in Thamesmead and Great Yarmouth have our name and logo on their team shirts and we also have the support of Leyton Orient football team. As knife crime sadly continues, my hope is that I can change the minds of those who carry knives and hopefully stop a family getting that knock on the door. We are willing to attend events and to speak at events as we believe in networking and supporting others in the fight towards ending knife crime.” I am privileged to say that Danny has invited me for the second time to sing at Anti-Knife UK’s candle light vigil, this special memorial event for the families who have been affected by knife crime and fatal stabbings. This year we will be meeting this February in Seven Kings Ilford in London and I look forward to re-connecting with some of the families I have come to know over the years. Danny O’Brien is a prime example of someone who may not have been directly affected by knife crime but he is someone who values just how precious lives are. Danny and all at Anti-Knife UK continue their work in raising awareness on the problems that surround knife crime and also continue to contact the companies which glamorise knives. Danny and Anti-Knife UK, you have been recognised with a national honour and recognised within your community but you have also been recognised by us! I wish you continued success in raising awareness, in the fight towards reducing knife crime and destruction within our communities. Twitter: ANTIKNIFEUK FB: Anti-Knife UK

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Midlands Woman Spearheads Obesity Campaign

A

fter losing over two and half stones in six months, Redditch woman Karen Collins is helping charity Heart Research UK to spearhead a national healthy living campaign. The 33-year-old mum of one had a healthy heart check by Heart Research UK at her work; DS Smith in Redditch, and realised she had to get healthier and lose weight. Karen is now supporting the National Obesity Forum’s awareness campaign - JanUary - by helping to encourage more people to get healthier in 2016, to lose weight and get fit; reducing their risk of heart disease.

This was just the wake up call needed, as her weight rose to 15 stones, causing knee problems, she knew she had to make a change to her lifestyle. Joining Celebrity TV cook Salle Bee in Brindleyplace at the centre of Birmingham, the ladies put on a healthy eating demonstration to raise awareness of the dangers to their health through obesity. Karen explained “I now snack on healthier options like fruit, eat more vegetables, cook most things from scratch rather than from jars and most importantly I eat a healthy breakfast along with drinking at least 3 litres of water per day. She has also shared her suc-

cesses at DS Smith to help others by setting up a weekly Lunchtime Walking Club for a 30 minute walk to the Arrow Valley Lake. Heart Research UK Lifestyle Officer, Vicki Litherland, said: “The National Obesity Forum’s JanUary campaign is all about committing to a National New Year’s Resolution and embedding small, manageable healthy lifestyle changes, not just in January but throughout 2016 and beyond.” Sally, a regular on the Lorraine ITV show – and an ambassador for Heart Research UK - is a champion of healthy lifestyles after nearly losing her life to three heart attacks over 10 years ago when she was just 36. She said:“People who suffer from obesity often assume that fat is only layered on the outside and it upsets them to see it. Actually the fat on the outside is mirrored by the fat on the inside of the body, surrounding the organs that keep us alive.”

Birmingham Children’s Hospital partners with world’s first exclusive night-time obstacle race

T

his April, supporters and fitness enthusiasts can raise vital funds for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital by running in the world’s first obstacle race to be ran exclusively at night. Fundraisers who raise £150 or more for the hospital will receive discounted entry to the race. Globally, the Obstacle Racing industry is estimated to be worth $200m, and enticing millions of runners worldwide, while raising millions of pounds for charities around the world. The UK Night Games aims to distinguish itself as a landmark fundraising event in the UK, and have teamed up with the Birmingham Childrens Hos-

pital to encourage supporters and runners to raise funds whilst completing their most intense and memorable mud run yet. Taking place at night, as the name suggests, and equipped only with a head torch to light their way, racers will tackle fire jumps, jet fuelled wind turbines, barbed wire, ice skips, hidden paintball snipers and more in a 10 mile challenge on a 4,000 acre plot of land unlike any other midnight stroll. With over 1,000 expected to take part, and tickets on sale since early September 2015, it promises to be a night to remember. The first event will be held at Deene Park in Northamp-

tonshire on April 16th 2016, with onsite camping available. Runners must be 18 or over, individual tickets cost £90 on the door with early bird entry currently costing £55. Fundraisers, however, can purchase their tickets for £30 if they raise £150 or more for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. To enter the race and fun-

draise for the hospital, simply register via the Birmingham Children’s Hospital website. Having never been particularly athletic himself, Robert realised obstacle races are a great way to stay in shape, have fun and fundraise for charity. He decided that Night Games Races would have an added edge - opting to have the run ran at night, amplifying the fear and fun. Rob Mason, the founder of Night Games Races said, “I want to develop the race into a successful fundraising platform because it’s a great way for people to raise money, get fit and have fun. I’m incredibly passionate about the work the Birmingham Children’s

Hospital do, and couldn’t think of a better organisation to be Night Games Races first charity partner.” David Leek, events supporter care officer at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital said, “We’re always looking for new and exciting ways for our supporters to raise money, so when Night Games Races approached us as a potential fundraising partner we were thrilled. “Every penny raised goes directly to helping the 250,000 children the hospital treats every year. We’re confident that Night Games Races will motivate people to raise these vital funds whilst having a whale of a time.”

sthma UK is urging people with asthma to be vigilant in winter as data shows the number of people who die because of an asthma attack peaks in January and remains high in February and March. Data from the Office for National Statistics highlights that asthma is the cause of proportionately more excess winter deaths than other conditions and respiratory diseases were the underlying cause of death in more than a third of all excess winter deaths in 2014/15. It’s thought that cold weather and viruses like cold and flu may be partly to blame; 90% of people with asthma report that cold and flu viruses make their asthma worse and 75% of people find that cold weather triggers an asthma attack. Given the recent bitterly cold weather and an increase in reported cases of flu, Asthma UK wants to ensure that everyone with asthma takes their medicines as prescribed, uses a written asthma action plan and knows what to do if their symptoms start to deteriorate.

ESJ Towers Renovation To Strengthen Isla Verde Tourism

Birmingham:

The UK’s property hotspot l Birmingham’s substantial infrastructure investment, in particular the HS2 high-speed rail line to London has put it at the forefront of investment prospects

B

irmingham ranks as the highest UK city for investment prospects in the 2016 ‘Emerging Trends in Real Estate Europe 2016: Beyond the Capital’ report - a forecast published jointly by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and PwC. Birmingham is set to benefit from the HS2 high-speed rail line to London, scheduled to open in 2026, alongside other substantial infrastructure investment, reflecting a trend seen in a number of European regional centres by offering good value for investors Global bank HSBC is moving its retail division to the city, commandeering a 20,000 square metre space at 2 Arena Central, proving that more occupiers are being attracted by the city’s relative value. In addition, rising rents and a dwindling supply of good quality space have prompted several developers to start building or refurbishing offices. According to the report, the leading European cities for investment prospects in 2016 are Berlin at the top spot, followed by Hamburg, Dublin, Madrid, Copenhagen and Birmingham. Notably, London has slipped from the top ten, suggesting that

investors are seeing better growth prospects in regional UK and European cities in the short term. In the long term, however, the UK capital remains the first choice in Europe for many international investors focused on wealth preservation with liquidity and the scale of the market, together with relatively robust economic performance. Chair of PwC in the Midlands, Matt Hammond said: “Holding its position in the top 10, the strong ranking of Birmingham reflects its continuing attraction to investors. This report reveals that investors are focusing on cities and assets rather than countries, and like regional centres in a number of other European countries, Birmingham is benefitting from offering good value. Infrastructure developments in Birmingham, such as HS2, and the £750 million redevelopment of the city’s New Street Station, including a 25,000 square metre John Lewis department store have created a big draw for the city. Birmingham also sits at the western corner of the prime UK logistics location known locally as the Midlands’ ‘golden triangle,’ where the country’s biggest warehouses are situated. A shortage of

l Matt Hammond, Chair of PwC in the Midlands existing buildings and rising rents have led to a surge in speculative development of big distribution centres across the region.” Beth Evans, real estate expert at PwC in the Midlands added: "Low interest rates, and the weight of capital bearing down on European real estate, mean that most investors remain bullish about the industry’s business prospects in

2016. But they acknowledge that the global field for real estate is increasingly competitive, and if the current wall of capital recedes, there will be an even stronger focus on underlying market fundamentals, active asset management and operational skills.”

conic high-density tourist area of Puerto Rico, Isla Verde, is projected to see a boost in tourism as the transformation of ESJ Towers is finalized. An $8 million investment made toward remodelling the property will provide a total of 450 rooms for visitors. The renovation of ESJ Towers to ESJ Azul, is one of the pillars proposed to revitalize Isla Verde beach. “The opening of ESJ Azul, as well as new tourism projects, represent an awakening in this area which is fundamental in strengthening the tourism industry in Puerto Rico,” said Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) Ingrid I. Rivera Rocafort. “These projects will create a new edge on innovation, entertainment and life to this iconic neighbourhood in Isla Verde.” New projects on the island include the remodeling of ESJ Tower, El Noir and El Verde, which have been great investments in the tourism industry and have created nearly 1,000 jobs,

resulting in a boost to the economy of Puerto Rico. This new initiative, known as the rebirth of Isla Verde, is led by Keith St. Clair, a veteran of the tourism and travel industry. With the opening of ESJ Azul, the initial project of the new vision for Isla Verde, St. Clair compliments the functions of a first-class hotel with excellent attractions, services and housing, positioning Puerto Rico as a destination. “Since I came to Puerto Rico, I have enjoyed the advantages of investing and living on the island, and I am convinced that tourism is one of the key factors to economic recovery and growth. This multi-billion dollar investment made on ESJ marks the beginning of a new stage in Isla Verde, and allows new facilities to continue to promote the tourism sector,” said St. Clair. “This rehabilitation will provide more variety and attractive offers to visitors, resulting in a great opportunity to give the tourism industry a diverse and dynamic leadership role in the country,” said Rivera Rocafort.

SPORT - WITH STEVE WILLIAMS

UK Athletics Publish ‘A Manifesto For Clean Athletics’

U

K Athletics (UKA) has published its document ‘A Manifesto for Clean Athletics’, which calls for a wide-ranging debate about measures that could be introduced to achieve a new era of clean athletics. In addition, following the conclusions of the Performance Oversight Committee’s (POC) Oregon Review (announced 18/09/15), UKA is publishing the recommendations. UK Athletics Chairman Ed Warner said: “The integrity of athletics was challenged as never before in 2015. Clean athletes and sports fans the world over have been let down. Trust in the sport is at its lowest point for decades. UKA believes the time has come for radical reform if we are to help restore trust in the sport. Athletics needs to act very differently if we are to move on from the crisis facing the sport. We are publishing today a 'Manifesto for Clean Athletics'. We cannot will the ends - a clean sport that people can trust - if we are not prepared to be bold and put in place the means to get there.

Greater transparency, tougher sanctions, longer bans -and even resetting the clock on world records for a new era - we should be open to do whatever it takes to restore credibility in the sport. And at the heart must be a proper and appropriate funding regime for the anti-doping authorities to help confront the new challenges they face. Clean athletes the world over deserve nothing less. This Manifesto is obviously just one contribution to the debate. There will doubtless be many others. What matters now is that athletics faces up to the scale of the problem facing the sport and is brave enough to take the tough and radical steps to ensure its long term health - however difficult they may be. We are also publishing the recommendations from our review into Oregon last summer. We had said we would wait until the USADA Report before publishing but the need for transparency overrides our previously stated position.” This Manifesto builds on the position that UKA has taken in the sport by continuing to be the only Diamond League organiser to have a clear and stated policy to not invite athletes returning from a serious anti-doping violation.

Eagles land T victory in BBL Final l The unbeatean Newcastle Eagles - 2016 BBL Cup Champions

he unbeaten Esh Group Eagles Newcastle claimed the first silverware of the season after their 94-82 comeback victory over the Leicester Riders in the BBL Cup Final. In a great advert for British basketball which was seen by a worldwide audience, the two teams put on a great display at both ends of the floor inside a packed Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. The Eagles had found themselves down 14 points in the third

quarter before embarking on a 12-0 run late in the third quarter that ultimately turned the game on its head. Two years ago the Riders used a late run to beat Newcastle in the Cup Final and on this occasion the Eagles returned the favour, outscoring the Riders 15-5 in the last five minutes to seal victory. Eagles' Rahmon Fletcher led all scorers with 18 points, earning him MVP honours, while Drew Sullivan and TrayVonn Wright both had 14 for the Riders. "It feels good," said Eagles'

guard Drew Lasker of the victory. "We never panicked and we just played our style of basketball, chipping away at the Riders one possession at a time." Riders' coach Rob Paternostro was disappointed but quick to pay tribute to the winning side. He stated, "You have got to give [Newcastle] a lot of credit I thought they played really well in the second half and whatever mistake you made, they made you pay."

Stingball set to launch in the UK

A

traditional daredevil ball game played at a school in the seventies has been revamped, recharged, reinvented and recreated to deliver the UK’s quickest wicked way to play ball. Take the sting, take the ball, take the game and win – you have the skills to be the Stingball champion. The rules are simple but don’t be fooled, you need skill, wits and a good sense of humour to beat your peers at Stingball.

With each game you can expect to work your key muscle groups along with some you never knew you had, burning up to 1,000 calories an hour – that’s a lot of burn. It’s not for the faint-hearted but it is for everyone, male or female, child or adult, eight or eighty do you dare to forfeit the burn for the sting? There are many ways you can become part of the ball game that’s taking the UK by storm, from playing to coaching to becoming a franchisee of Sting-

ball . Stingball is ideal for younger players as it enhances hand-eye co-ordination, promotes teamwork, keeps kids active and fit and improves mental awareness. It has been adapted to include a softer ball for the ‘Little Stingers’ so you feel nothing but fun when playing. Anybody and everybody can play 'Stingball' so it's a great game to get involved in, with leagues kicking off in the first three cities.

Young Asian star to shine bright at Anfield

L

iverpool beat off rivals, Arsenal, to sign West Bromwich Albion teenage midfield starlet Yan Dhanda. The youngster has reportedly signed his first professional contract with the club. Dhanda, who has just turned 17, has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Merseyside club until 2018. The attacking midfielder has been earmarked for future stardom by those in the know at Anfield and he won the Up and Coming Player prize at the 2013 Asian

Football Awards. Dhanda joined Liverpool from West Brom, at the age of 14, for £200,000 in 2013 and has trained with the Reds’ first-team on a number of occasions over the last 12 months. The Birmingham-born youngster has time on his side but he's under no illusions as to just how hard he's going to have to work to turn that dream into a reality over the coming years. Dhanda joined the Liverpool FC Academy in the summer. Having spent time at Aston Villa, Walsall,

Birmingham and West Brom when he was just seven, he joined the Baggies before his ninth birthday and then headed to Merseyside to sign for Liverpool in July. "I am so excited about signing for Liverpool and the fact that Brendan Rodgers was manager at the time made me even more excited. It made me want to join Liverpool more than ever because of the way he had faith in young players," Yan said. "In addition, this is exciting news for lots of Liverpool fans in India are very excited to have a British-born Indian playing for the club." Yan Dhanda first came to prominence when he won the U11 category in Chelsea's 'Search for an Asian Star' competition in 2010.
