CQC gives Top Marks to Birmingham Hospice Inter-community leader receives OBE at Palace

Birmingham hospice was recognised for its high standard of care and safety, and the way it was delivered, by the Care Quality Commission. The CQC said of John Taylor Hospice: “People’s views were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care. People’s privacy and dignity were respected and independence was promoted whenever possible.” After inspecting the premises and talking to staff and fami-

lies, they reported: “All of the people spoken with told us they were involved in decisions about care. One relative told us ‘The hospice team are very supportive and nothing is too much trouble.

They involve us and keep us informed.’” The inspection team noted: “We saw that staff knocked on doors before entering people’s bedrooms and spoke with people

in a respectful way, for example using their preferred name.” The Hospice, a community interest company which has been caring for people in Birmingham since 1910, was inspected and assessed to have met the standard in all in five categories: (i) Respecting and involving people who use services (ii) Care and welfare of people who use services (iii)Cleanliness and infection control (iv) Safety and suitability of premises (v) Assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision.

A sign of things to come special sign promoting ‘The Celebration’ statue was unveiled in West Bromwich depicting Baggies heroes Cyrille Regis, Brendon Batson and Laurie Cunningham celebrating a goal. The 'Welcome to Sandwell' boundary sign is poignantly positioned outside of West Bromwich Albion's Hawthorns stadium where the three players made a name for themselves in the late 1970s. her regular workload that proves as testimony of her overwhelming commitment to her work. After 40 plus years working vehemently towards bridging the gap between the East and West, Britain and its ethnic minority mix she has won many other

CEO Kate Phipps welcomed the inspection and the report saying: “The CQC has found that John Taylor Hospice is meeting all standards, seeing first-hand how the people we care for are at the heart of every decision about their care. We are delighted with the commission’s findings and especially to be commended for the respect and kindness of staff. We believe these qualities are fundamental in giving life and choices back at the very time when people feel they are being taken away. This report is a huge vote of confidence in everyone who works at John Taylor and everyone who has generously given their time and money to invest in the care we give.” The Care Quality Commission is the regulator of health and social care in England

and carries out unannounced visits of all care homes, acute hospitals and domiciliary care services at least once a year to judge whether essential standards are being met. The inspection team, who also met over lunch with people using the Heart of the Hospice, said: “We found the meal was hot and tasty. One person told us ‘No one can find fault with the food here, it is very good.’” Inspectors found that: “Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people’s safety and welfare.” And they added: “All of the people told us that staff were kind to them. All of the relatives spoken with told us they felt supported by the staff team and were very happy with the care and treatment their relative received.”

scheme to reduce obesity and increase physical activity in Birmingham parks is set to be rolled out across the city this year. Earlier last year, the team running Birmingham’s hugely successful Be Active sports scheme identified a new secret weapon in the battle of the bulge: the city’s 600 parks and open spaces. Following a successful pilot project, the Active Parks scheme will be expanded to cover 50 parks across the city from April. And organisers want park users to help shape the expanded scheme by completing an online survey about physical activity in the city’s many parks at https:// www.surveymonkey.com/s/BirmParks Last April, Birmingham City Council, with the support of Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Partnership, launched a groundbreaking pilot project looking at the role the city’s open spaces can play in helping lead fitter, healthier lives. Officials worked with Sport England to assess the success of ‘Active Parks’ at five sites: Cotteridge Park, Walkers Heath Park, Moonlit & Sunset Parks, Holders Lane Fields and Ward End Park. Lisa Pearson from Asda Great Bridge and Asda Tipton’s Paula Beddoe paid a visit to the Children’s Department at Sandwell Hospital on 19 December armed with trolley-loads of toys to help make Christmas magical for sick children on the wards. The donated toys were collected from the beginning of December at both stores, donated by generous customers who wanted to make Christmas special for children spending the festive period in hospital. Carly Jones, Head of Fundraising for the SWBH charity said: “We’re truly amazed by the generosity of local people and the Asda stores for their support. It just goes to show how people rally together to support others going through a tough period,

In just two years Edgbaston has increased the percentage of waste which is recycled from 0.2 per cent to the 2013 level of 56 per cent, with the remaining 44 per cent diverted away from landfill, reflecting the stadium's commitment to be a 'zero to landfill' venue by the end of 2013. This year, further ambitious environmental objectives in-

clude optimising the Club's energy use and becoming the first sports stadium in the country to implement ISO 20121; the external gold standard for sustainable events management. ‘Bad Friday’ good for celebrated author, Smith

ow published in celebration of its 30th anniversary, ‘Bad Friday’ is a celebration in itself for author, Norman Samuda Smith. He was 17-years-old when he originally wrote the story, so the actual novel is seen through a teenager’s pair of eyes today. He has revisited his first novel and has written a trilogy, the first called ‘Bad Friday Revisited’ with a follow up ‘The Basketball Chronicles’ which looks at the same characters when they’ve left school up until the age of 19/20 using a basketball theme. Part three; ‘Return of the Prodigal Son,’ is based on the friends being parents and how they deal with it. For Birmingham-man Samuda Smith, it’s a further triumph after he was lorded for being the first Black British-born writer to get work published in the UK, in 1982. Surprisingly not an avid book

reader, he has written three novels, his bother two; the highly successful ‘Whispers in the Walls,’ which showcases talented Black and Asian writers in Birmingham and ‘Rasta Love,’ based around his own personal experience. 'Rasta Love' was written in Patois, but that wasn't his original choice: “I wrote the story first in English but it just didn’t sound right. Jamaican-born scientist knighted

Dedicating the knighthood to his mother, Palmer said: "When I was first informed that the Prime Minister recommended me to the Queen the first person I thought of was my my mother. She left Jamaica, by her self, in 1948. By 1955, when I was 14, she managed to save £86 and was then able to send for

As a little background to myself presented in this document, I am persuaded to bring certain things to light because until we receive the understanding of God, we will continue to walk in

he concept of reincarnation is defined as the ability of the soul or spirit, after biological death, to begin a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. It is a religious or philosophical concept which irrefutably establishes the fact that the soul is immaterial, indestructible and eternal and it continues its existence after shedding the material body. It is a central tenet in most of the foremost religions in the world. Though the concept of reincarnation is accepted by major religions particularly in the East, and has gained a wider acceptability in modern times amongst those who are not religious, to the point of attracting academic attention, it is still highly contentious and controversial concept which is further obfuscated by

darkness. This write-up is aimed at going beyond the ordinary; to appreciate the spiritual blessing that comes to us very second in our life. Every man’s ignorance is his mountain. The solution that changes our lives is the revelation of God. Like the good book says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children”. Hos 4:6 I present this document as an access to proper knowledge and this revelation should surely be the cause of great anxiety for those truly in search of God’s redemption.

The sudden recognition and wider acceptance of the concept of reincarnation which now transcends religious / doctrinal boundaries is the fact that the concept seems to offer one of the most attractive explanations of humanity’s origin and destiny. It is accepted not only by adherents of Eastern religions or New Age spirituality, but also by many who don’t share such esoteric interests and convictions. To know that you lived many lives before this one and that

there are many more to come is a very attractive perspective from which to judge the meaning of life. On the one hand, reincarnation is a source of great comfort, especially for those who seek liberation on the exclusive basis of their inner resources. It gives assurance for continuing one’s existence in further lives and thus having a renewed chance to attain liberation. Another major reason for accepting reincarnation by so many people today is that it unequivocally explains the differences that exist among people. Some are healthy, others are tormented their whole life by physical handicaps. Some are rich, others at the brink of starvation. Some have success without being religious; others are constant losers, despite their religious dedication. Eastern religions

explain these differences as a result of previous lives, good or bad, which bear their fruits in the present one through the action of karma. Therefore reincarnation seems to be a perfect way of punishing or rewarding one’s deeds. If we disengage the concept of reincarnation from all the trappings of negative connotations and evaluate it on a higher spiritual platform taking the immaterial, eternal nature of the soul into consideration, not only will we find out that it is the ultimate explanation of humanity’s destiny, but our very relationship with God.

Conditioned

Why we are conditioned in material bodies and how we can transcend our present fallen state and rise to a higher state, to the spiritual platform and assert our common union with the divine entity, with God.

Because we have been trapped or encased in a material body, we tend to gloss over the fact that we are eternal souls. We identify with the body and grieve for its destruction. But the soul is never destroyed after the annihilation of the body. Because it is part and parcel of a larger spiritual entity which is God. It is like a spark of a larger whole and after the soul vacates the body, it goes back to the creator based on fruitive activities. The ultimate goal of the soul is to become perfect and achieve Godly status. It is bound by divine laws to avoid sinful activities, which will relegate it to a lower life form like plant or animal life but to engage in pious activities which will ensure the souls’ perfection and eventual union with the divine and end the souls’ vicious cycle of constant transmigration.

In our quest for spiritual enlightenment in this age of doctrinal wranglings and dogmatic stonewalling of spiritual truths, it is imperative we dislodge our attention from which tenet or concept is in accord with our traditional beliefs, our perception of reality or the standard of value with which we wants to be judged. We must accept that which has a valid premise and is beyond doubt. Reincarnation is not only a summarized version of the souls constant journey through birth and death, but the ultimate explanation of the souls purpose and how it can elevate itself to perfection, oneness with God. n the West Midlands, there’s a new concept in worship that is fast attracting Christians from all walks of life. Taking evangelism back to basics, The Rock Church in Walsall is designed people of all ages, races and backgrounds. It is headed by Ian Evans, who heard God specifically call him to start pastoring a new Church, since 2007, he has been pastoring in Walsall, impacting on communities throughout and, after God spoke to him he purchased a building he felt was specifically designated to him, and The Rock Church was created. Thereafter, a second location was formed as an increasingly large number of the multicultural

West Midlands felt they wanted to be part of something new. The on-going growth meant the ability to develop further areas of Church life from purchasing a double-decker bus for community outreach, running Alpha, holding ‘camps’ in a marquee, and beginning youth work.

The ‘toolkit’ includes an array of advice and guidance on statutory rights and best practice activities, which was launched at an event hosted by accountants, PwC and supported by Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Among those taking part in the launch was Kate Warrington, Assurance Director at PwC, who said: “Increasing diversity at all levels is a key priority. It’s about making sure there is a level playing field for all, regardless of gender or race, and doing this as quickly as we can. However, many women face challenges around juggling their career, motherhood and other caring responsibilities they may have. As a result, some may prefer to work flexible hours rather than the traditional working day of nine to five. It’s ‘action learning’ for real. Add the accelerating pace of new technologies along with climate change, resource depletion and population pressures and everything’s in flux. However, while there are few women at the top today, women under 40 haven’t faced the same restrictions. A lot of younger women now assume they can get to the top. They can. There are more women in their early and mid-40s appearing in positions of power, notably in fields traditionally dominated by men. Somehow, as a society, we need to work out how to care for the next generation and give women the freedom to pursue their careers too.” GBCC policy adviser, Henrietta Brealey, said: “The toolkit includes advice and guidance on statutory rights and best practice activities. It does not call for onerous regulation but raises awareness of what already exists. It aims to support interested women and their employers by giving them the information they need to decide what works for them.”

Wheels are swiftly in motion to enable further interaction amongst users, allowing them to purchase orders through fabric producers, jewellery makers, photographers and more. By mid-2014, users are expected to be able to make gallery playlists, whereby their chosen images can be shared or privately created for each individual’s enjoyment. Oredope added: “Our current focus is to further improve the user experience on the site. We wish to make our site as social as possible over the next three months, so you can interact and learn. One day we want to be a global platform” The social network visionary has already turned down investment; afraid the money may dilute an opulent formula that the website is looking to nurture. If one were to view the comments left by users, it is little wonder why – “Great project. Love the concept. E-ovation!” Read one user’s commendation after spending three hours on the website. With London Fashion Week in full swing, Iya Eko’s introduction stands tall as a unique window into world fashion’s cultural diversity, and with plans to integrate the website into a mobile application later this year, this instant sharing photo site could well be one to look out for.

Walsall College to invest in the future

new scheme funded by Walsall College could create 250 jobs by 2015 and breathe new life into the region’s economy. The College, based at the heart of the industrial Black Country has been backed by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) with a proposed eleven million Businesses and Sports development. The Award winning academy which hosts around 14,000 pupils has agreed to donate what has been described as a substantial capital grant to ensure the projects go-ahead. College bosses forwarded their case to the SFA last September in a bid to support the scheme. The college have proposed vacant land by their Wisemore Campus will be used in the regeneration, at a time when Government funding is at a critical low. The state-of-the-art complex is believed to complement exist-

ing facilities in the region and a reported fee of £64 million has been estimated to erect the new Wisemore site. Walsall College Principal and Chief Executive Jatinder Sharma speaking to the Phoenix said: “We’re doing this for Walsall and the region as a whole. We wish to make a positive impact on every aspect of the community and provide a future for our children.” As well as a whole new sporting experience to emerge from the project, vocations and jobs will be spread across the incubation centre for business as well as a contemporary sports hall that will meet Sport England standards. that will deepen into the year 2015. Football stars back HIV testing campaign

ith one in five people infected with HIV in the UK remaining undiagnosed, Birmingham health chiefs are backing a campaign spearheaded by football stars from across the West Midlands to promote the importance of HIV testing. Ron Vlaar, Paul Robinson, Sam Ricketts and Chris Brunt all appeared in educational booklets, videos and posters which promote the health benefits of testing for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The four captains, who joined forces with Birmingham awareness campaign; ‘Saving Lives,’ also appeared on promotional buses across the city during November and De-

cember. One in five of those living with HIV in the UK do not know they are infected. People with undiagnosed HIV cannot receive treatment using today’s highly effective treatments, and may well unknowingly pass on the infection to partners. “Saving Lives is a campaign that is helping promote awareness,” said Aston Villa captain, Ron Vlaar. “We don’t want people to hear these silly things about sharing a kiss or having trouble with insurance.” Birmingham City captain Paul Robinson continues: “You can live a long happy life with HIV if you get tested.” The players’ clubs are helping promote the educational effort, and

‘Saving Lives’ published a special booklet featuring its footballing ambassadors to coincide with the National HIV Testing Week last November. “People can get tested very easily,” says West Bromwich Albion’s skipper Brunt. “They can go to their local hospital, their GP or a sexual health clinic.” Wolves captain Sam Ricketts is clear on the message: “Always stay safe, and go and get tested.” ‘Saving Lives’ works with local service providers to publicise testing centres in towns and cities nationwide. The charity’s campaign aims to reach new audiences and talk about HIV in a way which resonates today.

The sooner you are diagnosed, the sooner your treatment can begin and that increases your chances of leading a long and healthy life.” ‘Saving Lives’ is the first UK HIV charity of its kind to be supported by major Premier League football clubs.

Lights, Camera, Action At The 25th Palm Springs Film Festival!

alm Springs rolled out the red carpet as it welcomed a host of the world’s most celebrated international film stars for the 25th Palm Springs International Film Festival. The star-studded event also marked the Californian city’s recent 75th anniversary. Founded by the late Sonny Bono during his reign as city mayor, the week and a halflong film festival has grown to become one of the biggest film festivals in North America - a can’t-miss event for film lovers and casual cinemagoers alike, featuring more than 200 films from 70 countries and various

premieres. In total, there was 15 screens throughout Palm Springs showcased films across countless genres. The festival also featured special events, filmmaker tributes and gala receptions. The Black Tie Awards Gala was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center, honouring individuals in the film industry with awards. This year’s female actress honorees included Sandra Bullock, recently gracing the silver screen in 'Gravity,' who received the Desert Palm Achievement Award. Matthew McConaughey, receive the male actor equivalent. Known as Hollywood’s

playground and a burgeoning film festival destination, Palm Springs hosts several high-profile film festivals throughout the year including the Palm Springs International ShortFest; Festival of Native Film & Culture; Cinema Diverse; and more. ilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey and The Dwarves continue their journey towards The Lonely Mountain in order to reclaim their homeland of Erebor from the fearsome dragon known as Smaug. However, with cracks beginning to show within the group and an evil greater than Smaug preparing for war, their mission is going to be far more difficult than any of them could have ever imagined. The first movie in this on-going, prequel trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,

opened in 2012 to heavily mixed reviews. Many people were left disappointed and felt that the trilogy began with a whimper rather than the bang they were all hoping for. For the record, I am not one of those people. I thoroughly enjoyed An Unexpected Journey, but having said that, it must be declared that The Desolation of

Smaug is heads and tails above its predecessor in almost every way. The direction, the writing, the characters, the set pieces, the action, and the visual effects – everything is improved upon in this highly anticipated sequel. As always, Peter Jackson directs this most recent adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy masterpiece and he could not have done a better job. Jackson is on the form of his life here and fills each and every frame with excellence. The set design, the costumes, the visual effects – everything comes together seamlessly in order to help Jackson create his own personal vision of MiddleEarth. Ever since The Lord of

the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring, Jackson has worked tirelessly to craft this vast and immersive world that so many of us have become so familiar with and fond of. It is wonderful to know that this material is in the hands of a man who clearly has a great respect and admiration for Tolkien and this is exactly what makes

these movies so great; they are made by the ultimate fan. Peter Jackson was born to make these movies. The cast are all fantastic. Martin Freeman is a joy to watch as Bilbo Baggins as he infuses a sense of humour and wonderment into Bilbo that makes him such a fan and quirky character. However, this time around, there is a darkness to Bilbo that was absent in the previous chapter. The ring he now possesses is clearly beginning to affect his sanity, causing for some striking changes to his personality. Fortunately, these changes are very sparse and very brief but they are clearly building to something much worse. Ian McKellen is Gandalf – it really is that simple. His character is not featured as heavily as he has been in previous chapters, but he still plays a significant role in the events that transpire. Richard Armitage returns as the tormented Thorin Oakenshield who is relentless and unyielding in his desire to reclaim his homeland of Erebor. Like Bilbo, there are some changes evident in Thorin that seem to suggest his desperation for victory is having an adverse affect on his persona. He seems to be motivated by rage and is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. The Desolation Of Smaug also brings with it the welcome return of Orlando Bloom’s heroic elf, Legolas and introduces us to Tauriel, played by Lost’s Evangeline Lilly; Legolas’ confidant who is every bit the warrior he is.

Legolas and Tauriel are fantastic and they are involved in some of the most spectacular action set-pieces in the entire movie. Considering that the character of Tauriel doesn’t even exist in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Evangeline Lilly has done a brilliant job of effortlessly becoming a part of this world. She fits right in. The action in this movie is stunning and is choreographed with a joyful extravagance that truly makes it a pleasure to behold. One scene in particular involves Legolas standing on the heads of two dwarves as he mercilessly eliminates a horde of Orcs with

his legendary bow whilst Tauriel is engaged in vicious, fast-paced combat with the same beasts. It’s brilliant to watch Legolas and Tauriel try to one-up each other in terms of their own bad-

dragon, Smaug – and what an introduction it is. Smaug is, without question, the best dragon ever committed to film. He is immense and terrifying yet witty and charming, thanks in

assery. The Desolation of Smaug also brings with it the long-awaited introduction of the legendary

part to the excellent voice work by Benedict Cumberbatch, who bestows a sinister arrogance upon Smaug that makes every moment we spend with him magical. His back-and-forth dialogue with Bilbo is fantastic and builds slowly to a rousing confrontation between Smaug, Bilbo and The Dwarves. The CGI is mindblowing and serves to bring this colossal character to life in a very real and very vivid way. The Desolation of Smaug is brilliant. It is fun, dark, scary and action-packed. It also ends with a wonderful cliff-hanger that teases what is certain to be an actionpacked and epic final chapter. A must see. 10/10

tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.

It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.

Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.

Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.

A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”

Students will be given the chance to work with staff at the magazine to develop their own features which will be featured either in The Phoenix or in our sister publication, Street Cred.

With a diverse range of students, it is hoped that the students will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the paper and help further promote it within the local community we serve.

oung athletes aged between 16 and 18 are getting the chance to take part in the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme, giving them the opportunity to gain further qualifications while continuing to develop as an athlete. Athletes would need to attend up to nine days throughout the calendar year, which will be held at regional hubs and on suitable dates to avoid competition clashes, in school holidays and at weekends. Personal coaches will also be invited to attend relevant sessions with their athlete and contribute where appropriate to their athlete’s programme. Last-minute cramming is not the way to revise

ll-night revision sessions are not the best approach to exams, says research. Anyone who thinks last-minute exam cramming always works is in for some bad news. Psychologists from Sheffield University have published results from their research showing that learning is much more effective when spaced out over stretches of time. It showed leaving a day between practice sessions was a much better way of gaining skills than continuous play. Professor Tom Stafford says this reflects how memories are stored. He was able to analyse how people around the world improved when playing the Axon computer game. “Cramming for long intense stretches ahead of a test might feel like more is being learned,

but this is illusory. A better way of revising or learning is to plan over a much longer period, with substantial breaks between study sessions,” he said. He found a clear pattern showing that people were more successful when gaps were left between sessions of playing. “Leaving a day between sessions did not weaken performance, but strengthened it,” he said. This is because it makes better use of how the brain stores information. "The study suggests that learning can be improved. You can learn more efficiently or use the same practice time to learn to a higher level," says Prof Stafford. The volume of learning is less important than how that time is structured.

The borough is now placed third on a list of the best-performing areas in the region, the education watchdog said in its annual report. ust when producers within Channel Four were under the hammer for releasing ‘Benefits Street’, a wholly inaccurate representation of those on Britain’s streets on the dole, or as those of us in Birmingham would call the UB40, the channel launches another potential spectacle, this time directed at children seeking adoption. ‘Find me a Family’ follows three households of would be adopters in plight to find homes

for children who are yet to be, and are very difficult to be homed. The growing issue within our communities is one so great that despite channel four’s best efforts to undermine the benefit system, they appear to have redeemed themselves with this tear jerking journey to finding adoption. With well-directed interviews and heart-warming pieces to camera, the new series won’t be breaking Benefit Street’s viewing figures, yet dignity is expected to return in the eyes of those watching the edgy channel after the watershed.

t is a sad fact that a child, of any colour or background has to go into public care because of neglect, or abuse, or because their parents cannot cope. Adoption is one of the best ways of giving those children a family for life. More than 4,000 children across the UK are in need of adoption every year. Unfortunately, children from some African, African-Caribbean, Asian and other ethnic minority communities often have to wait longer for families to provide permanent homes. Black boys, over the age of five, in particular, wait the longest. Many people consider adoption, but never look into it further, convinced they will be ruled out due to the many myths surrounding who can and cannot adopt. It is important to remember that the UK has one of the most open, liberal and supportive set of criteria for those interested in adopting a child. People are needed who could parent children from African, African-Caribbean, Asian and Mixed Ethnicity communities. Adopters are needed – and welcomed – from every sector of society, from every income

level, ethnic group and religious persuasion. Misconceptions that persist include issues around age, marital status and sexual orientation. But, in reality, you don’t need to be under 40. There is no upper age limit. You can adopt if you are single, or in a same-sex relationship. You don’t need to be wealthy, or own your own home. And issues such as being overweight will not automatically rule you out. As long as you are over 21 and do not have a criminal conviction for certain crimes, you can apply to be assessed as an adopter. Savita de Sousa, the BME policy consultant for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), said: “African-Caribbean boys tend to wait longer for families as there are a limited number of ‘forever’ families available to meet their emotional, developmental and spiritual needs. “Basic things like hair care and skin care are important to a child growing up. African, AfricanCaribbean, Asian and Mixed Ethnicity children need to develop a positive sense of their identities where they feel good about themselves and their connection

At the recently held event, music industry expert and author, Maconie, was tasked with researching what makes a song an anthem and what is it about an anthem that gets under people’s skin. As part of the research, Stuart, put together a list of songs with anthemic status – both recently popular and traditional – and asked the nation to choose the song that makes them the happiest. Oh, the experiences we have!

h, the experiences we have! Here I am in my hotel room, working on my speech. Actually, trying to work on my speech, because somehow, the ideas aren't flowing, the thoughts incoherent, the phrasing disjointed. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe I'm tired, maybe it's because it wasn't too long ago that I landed; maybe too much on my mind, maybe I'm simple losing my touch; maybe it's nothing at. Whatever it is, something's lacking in this speech. So I decide to take a walk those who know me know I walk a tad fast. To where? I don't know. And, as I teach in my communications classes, if you don't know where you're going you end up somewhere else. Fast. Often, it's somewhere you'd rather not go. But not today. This time I end up in the Botanical Gardens, you know. Oh, the experiences we have! By the way, is this Dr. Seuss? My daughter reminded me during the few minutes I spent with her on Monday that she read every Dr. Seuss story, his every book by the time she was eight and to this day she quotes Dr. Seuss. Often. Oh, the places she’ll go! OK, I digress. Anyway, as I walk through these beautiful gardens the music catches my attention. Compelling music. Absorbing music. Composed and performed by birds. It seems that every one of the nearly 200 species is involved in this open air concert. There's cawing and whistling and cooing and chirping. Every caw caw, every chirp chirp, every hoot hoot, every tweet tweet, every chip chip and crack crack performed with precision, the modulation perfect. Maybe that's what I should talk about, I tell myself: "You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go” Definitely Dr. Seuss. And, oh yes, the experiences we have! As I take in the sweet melody and contemplate my speech, a gentleman comes up to me. His car won't start and he wants me to "give me a push". What?

Me? Push a car? But I do.

Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try. I continue walking these amazing gardens, enjoying the symphony. And as the sun begins to fall and darkness begins to emerge, a new chorus rises. This time it's an orchestra.

But how will you tell this fascinating story? How do you communicate it to the whole wide world? How do you keep paradise, while turning it into a major source of income, a tool for development of every Guyanese?

Yes, what an exciting time we live in as communicators! Communication is key, they say, but no one said it was easy. Or, as the Irish playwright, essayist, novelist and short story writer, George Bernard Shaw so eloquently stated, the single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has been achieved. In essence, we take things for granted, we believe that as long as we say what we want to say, communication is complete. We often forget that communication is an exchange of ideas, it’s the flow of information from one person to another; and in order to be effective the sender and the receiver must be on the same wave length, if you may. Communication is what the other person hears, not what you say. It’s the music I hear when the birds do the chirp chirp and the caw caw and the tweet tweet. It’s the image that I visualize as the jaguar races across my TV screen and the Kaiteur Falls rush down my tablet. And, since nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood as Freeman Teague, Jr said, the onus is on us to ensure that communication is achieved both in words and in deeds. Action still speaks louder than words. Of course, the task isn’t always easy, the hurdles are many, the environment challenging. For the most part, our tourism remains under-developed, and the programmes under-funded. However, despite the hurdles, despite the challenges, you should never give in or give up. Shanaze Reade urges women to get on their bikes

hree-times BMX world champion Shanaze Reade has urged women countrywide to get in gear and join the push to get one million females riding a bike. The campaign to boost the number of women who cycle was launched by British Cycling, as the governing body actively looks to address the gender imbalance in the sport. While British Cycling was proud to announce that over 100,000 women had already taken part in the initiative in six months of a seven year campaign, Chief Executive Ian Drake, said: “We know that British Cycling has a long journey ahead to change the culture of our sport but we are heading

in the right direction.” Reade, one of the most recognisable two-wheel champions, said: “For too long cycling has been seen as a sport for men. It’s fantastic to hear that over a 100,000 women have dusted off their bikes and got involved in British Cycling programmes across all disciplines so far.” She added: “The more women that cycle, the more their friends, sisters and mums will be inspired to give it a try – we’re starting to close that gender gap and I look forward to seeing even more women enjoy all that cycling has to offer.” Assessing the success achieved so far, Drake said the introduction of the 2014 women’s tour will give the campaign

further impetus: “In the months since we launched our strategy we’ve made some great progress and our plan to get one million more women cycling over the next seven years is firmly on track.
