l John Taylor Hospice Staff celebrate the CQC findings.

Birmingham hospice was recognised for its high standard of care and safety, and the way it was delivered, by the Care Quality Commission. The CQC said of John Taylor Hospice: “People’s views were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care. People’s privacy and dignity were respected and independence was promoted whenever possible.” After inspecting the premises and talking to staff and fami-

lies, they reported: “All of the people spoken with told us they were involved in decisions about care. One relative told us ‘The hospice team are very supportive and nothing is too much trouble.

They involve us and keep us informed.’” The inspection team noted: “We saw that staff knocked on doors before entering people’s bedrooms and spoke with people

in a respectful way, for example using their preferred name.” The Hospice, a community interest company which has been caring for people in Birmingham since 1910, was inspected and assessed to have met the standard in all in five categories: (i) Respecting and involving people who use services (ii) Care and welfare of people who use services (iii)Cleanliness and infection control (iv) Safety and suitability of premises (v) Assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision.

A sign of things to come special sign promoting ‘The Celebration’ statue was unveiled in West Bromwich depicting Baggies heroes Cyrille Regis, Brendon Batson and Laurie Cunningham celebrating a goal. The 'Welcome to Sandwell' boundary sign is poignantly positioned outside of West Bromwich Albion's Hawthorns stadium where the three players made a name for themselves in the late 1970s. It is the same pose that will be used in the statue which will be unveiled in West Bromwich town centre in the summer. During their time at Albion, they became pioneers, paving the way for future Black footballers to play at the highest level in the English game. Former striker and all time Hawthorns hero, Regis, was

on hand to unveil the new sign and was joined by Mayor of Sandwell and lifelong Baggies' fans Councillor Linda Horton and her husband Councillor Roger Horton. Cyrille said: "The sign looks fantastic and it's great to see the project take another step forward towards this year's unveiling. This is not about Brendon, Laurie and me, but it represents the journey and progression made by Black footballers and the acceptance and encouragement shown by Albion fans and supporters everywhere." Councillor Horton added: "It's a great advert not only for the new town centre where the statue will be, but for all of Sandwell. We are extremely proud to have these players representing the borough and I am sure people will come from far and wide to see the statue once it's unveiled.

2013 Birthday Honours list for her outstanding professional, social, cultural, educational, health and religious activities and commitment to inter-cultural relations. Her involvement in voluntary

activities including as a chaplain for the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, a Resilience Champion working voluntarily with Birmingham Resilience Team as well as a large number of other community and civic organisations, is just a fraction of

her regular workload that proves as testimony of her overwhelming commitment to her work. After 40 plus years working vehemently towards bridging the gap between the East and West, Britain and its ethnic minority mix she has won many other

awards in recognition of her outstanding contribution and selfless community work. Congratulations to Satinder and her family on another great achievement.

CEO Kate Phipps welcomed the inspection and the report saying: “The CQC has found that John Taylor Hospice is meeting all standards, seeing first-hand how the people we care for are at the heart of every decision about their care. We are delighted with the commission’s findings and especially to be commended for the respect and kindness of staff. We believe these qualities are fundamental in giving life and choices back at the very time when people feel they are being taken away. This report is a huge vote of confidence in everyone who works at John Taylor and everyone who has generously given their time and money to invest in the care we give.” The Care Quality Commission is the regulator of health and social care in England

and carries out unannounced visits of all care homes, acute hospitals and domiciliary care services at least once a year to judge whether essential standards are being met. The inspection team, who also met over lunch with people using the Heart of the Hospice, said: “We found the meal was hot and tasty. One person told us ‘No one can find fault with the food here, it is very good.’” Inspectors found that: “Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people’s safety and welfare.” And they added: “All of the people told us that staff were kind to them. All of the relatives spoken with told us they felt supported by the staff team and were very happy with the care and treatment their relative received.”

n becoming the first African Caribbean woman to take up the position Beverly Lindsay OBE OD, was appointed as a deputy lieutenant for the West Midlands, with a duty to represent the Queen under the leadership of Her Majesty’s LordLieutenant for the West Midlands Paul Sabapathy CBE. Ms. Lindsay, owner of Diamond Travel, Birmingham’s leading and most distinguished independent travel agent, is one of the city’s most prominent and respected community leaders.

And for her to be bestowed with such a high position in the West Midlands has left her both "humbled and honoured," as she put it. “This gives me an opportunity to extend the boundaries in serving the community, who have supported me in all my endeavors over the years,” said Jamaican-born Beverly, who also chairs the Association of Jamaican Nationals (Birmingham) UK. Ms. Lindsay led the city's fiveday 'Jamaica in the Square' celebrations as part of the country's 50th Anniversary of Independence.

scheme to reduce obesity and increase physical activity in Birmingham parks is set to be rolled out across the city this year. Earlier last year, the team running Birmingham’s hugely successful Be Active sports scheme identified a new secret weapon in the battle of the bulge: the city’s 600 parks and open spaces. Following a successful pilot project, the Active Parks scheme will be expanded to cover 50 parks across the city from April. And organisers want park users to help shape the expanded scheme by completing an online survey about physical activity in the city’s many parks at https:// www.surveymonkey.com/s/BirmParks Last April, Birmingham City Council, with the support of Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Partnership, launched a groundbreaking pilot project looking at the role the city’s open spaces can play in helping lead fitter, healthier lives. Officials worked with Sport England to assess the success of ‘Active Parks’ at five sites: Cotteridge Park, Walkers Heath Park, Moonlit & Sunset Parks, Holders Lane Fields and Ward End Park. Visitors to the five sites have been offered a wide range of free activities, including: Running, cycling, Tai Chi, park fit, bushcraft, gardening, buggyfit, netball, rounders and walking. The pilot project has proved to be hugely popular, with user feedback highlighting a number of positives, including: Active Parks helps families exercise together, it appeals to all ages, people who do not traditionally access leisure facilities are more likely to stay active in parks and open spaces, the project changes people’s perceptions of where they can be active, plus, people attending for exercise are going on to volunteer, becoming active members of the community. Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Counciller Steve

Scheme set for expansion Bedser, believes tapping into the potential of the great outdoors means Active Parks is building on the success of the multi award-winning Be Active scheme. He said: “The five pilot schemes have proved to be hugely popular and we’ve seen there is undoubtedly a demand for more physical activities in our parks and open spaces. “The obesity problem cannot be underestimated. 26% of our population is obese and that includes nearly one in four of our 10 and 11-year-olds. So we have to use every resource available to us to promote healthier and more

active lifestyles throughout the city. That includes our wonderful parks and open spaces. We already have the Be Active programme, which has been running very successfully for more than three years helping thousands of people across Birmingham access gyms, classes and swimming for free. But we know that, for a variety of reasons, some people will never attend gyms and leisure centres. Instead they prefer to be outdoors. For many of these people our parks and open spaces offer familiar, unthreatening venues.”

sda stores in the Black Country encouraged locals to donate toys in their Christmas trolley collection to support the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals (SWBH) Charity Christmas appeal. Both Asda Great Bridge and Asda Tipton donated a huge number of toys help make Christmas-time in hospital more enjoyable for sick local children. Lisa Pearson from Asda Great Bridge and Asda Tipton’s Paula Beddoe paid a visit to the Children’s Department at Sandwell Hospital on 19 December armed with trolley-loads of toys to help make Christmas magical for sick children on the wards. The donated toys were collected from the beginning of December at both stores, donated by generous customers who wanted to make Christmas special for children spending the festive period in hospital. Carly Jones, Head of Fundraising for the SWBH charity said: “We’re truly amazed by the generosity of local people and the Asda stores for their support. It just goes to show how people rally together to support others going through a tough period,

Local supermarkets bring Christmas cheer to Sandwell’s sick kids especially at a time like Christmas. Their kindness made a huge difference to sick children in the West Midlands and we could never have imagined we’d have such a huge amount of toys,

games, books and gadgets to make their stay in Christmas that much more enjoyable.” The SWBH charity funds additional facilities to enhance the experience of patients and their

families across Sandwell, City and Rowley Regis Hospitals. They’re currently fundraising to make the outdoor play area at Sandwell an exciting and stimulating space for children of

all ages. You can find out more about supporting the campaign by contacting the fundraising team on 0121 507 5196 or emailing swbh.fundraising@nhs.net

reat environmental progress that has been made during 2013 as part of Edgbaston Stadium's drive to be the 'Most sustainable major cricket stadium in the country'. In just two years Edgbaston has increased the percentage of waste which is recycled from 0.2 per cent to the 2013 level of 56 per cent, with the remaining 44 per cent diverted away from landfill, reflecting the stadium's commitment to be a 'zero to landfill' venue by the end of 2013. This year, further ambitious environmental objectives in-

clude optimising the Club's energy use and becoming the first sports stadium in the country to implement ISO 20121; the external gold standard for sustainable events management. Craig Flindall, Finance Director at Edgbaston with responsibility for the stadium's sustainability programme, commented: "It is really pleasing to note the progress that has been made on waste and recycling in 2013, which reflects a lot of hard work from our stadium management team with support from our members, spectators and event guests during the year. Our 2012-2016 Strategic Plan

set out a number of important Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives, which aim to enhance our relationship with our local communities. These initiatives include our funding commitment to recreational cricket, via the Warwickshire Cricket Board, and our on-going support to our Official Charity Partners, such as Cure Leukaemia, the Lords Taverners and Fisher House. A number of other CSR elements are being worked on as we speak."

‘Bad Friday’ good for celebrated author, Smith

N

ow published in celebration of its 30th anniversary, ‘Bad Friday’ is a celebration in itself for author, Norman Samuda Smith. He was 17-years-old when he originally wrote the story, so the actual novel is seen through a teenager’s pair of eyes today. He has revisited his first novel and has written a trilogy, the first called ‘Bad Friday Revisited’ with a follow up ‘The Basketball Chronicles’ which looks at the same characters when they’ve left school up until the age of 19/20 using a basketball theme. Part three; ‘Return of the Prodigal Son,’ is based on the friends being parents and how they deal with it. For Birmingham-man Samuda Smith, it’s a further triumph after he was lorded for being the first Black British-born writer to get work published in the UK, in 1982. Surprisingly not an avid book

reader, he has written three novels, his bother two; the highly successful ‘Whispers in the Walls,’ which showcases talented Black and Asian writers in Birmingham and ‘Rasta Love,’ based around his own personal experience. 'Rasta Love' was written in Patois, but that wasn't his original choice: “I wrote the story first in English but it just didn’t sound right. Most Black writers write their narrative in English and then they convert to Patois when it comes to the dialogue. l Norman Samuda Smith So I thought I would take “He's had a very interesting and it to the next level and do the heartbreaking life,” says Nornarrative in Patois as well as the man, continuing: “Although dialog. T

he concept of reincarnation is defined as the ability of the soul or spirit, after biological death, to begin a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. It is a religious or philosophical concept which irrefutably establishes the fact that the soul is immaterial, indestructible and eternal and it continues its existence after shedding the material body. It is a central tenet in most of the foremost religions in the world. Though the concept of reincarnation is accepted by major religions particularly in the East, and has gained a wider acceptability in modern times amongst those who are not religious, to the point of attracting academic attention, it is still highly contentious and controversial concept which is further obfuscated by

darkness. This write-up is aimed at going beyond the ordinary; to appreciate the spiritual blessing that comes to us very second in our life. Every man’s ignorance is his mountain. The solution that changes our lives is the revelation of God. Like the good book says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children”. Hos 4:6 I present this document as an access to proper knowledge and this revelation should surely be the cause of great anxiety for those truly in search of God’s redemption.

misinterpretations, lack of proper understanding of the phenomenon and simply viewed as a threat to certain religious tenets. Notwithstanding the overt opposition to the concept of reincarnation by these established religions, the majority of the sects within those religions have become avowed adherents of the concept.

Recognition

The sudden recognition and wider acceptance of the concept of reincarnation which now transcends religious / doctrinal boundaries is the fact that the concept seems to offer one of the most attractive explanations of humanity’s origin and destiny. It is accepted not only by adherents of Eastern religions or New Age spirituality, but also by many who don’t share such esoteric interests and convictions. To know that you lived many lives before this one and that

The Phoenix – January 2014

Reincarnation

there are many more to come is a very attractive perspective from which to judge the meaning of life. On the one hand, reincarnation is a source of great comfort, especially for those who seek liberation on the exclusive basis of their inner resources. It gives assurance for continuing one’s existence in further lives and thus having a renewed chance to attain liberation. Another major reason for accepting reincarnation by so many people today is that it unequivocally explains the differences that exist among people. Some are healthy, others are tormented their whole life by physical handicaps. Some are rich, others at the brink of starvation. Some have success without being religious; others are constant losers, despite their religious dedication. Eastern religions

explain these differences as a result of previous lives, good or bad, which bear their fruits in the present one through the action of karma. Therefore reincarnation seems to be a perfect way of punishing or rewarding one’s deeds. If we disengage the concept of reincarnation from all the trappings of negative connotations and evaluate it on a higher spiritual platform taking the immaterial, eternal nature of the soul into consideration, not only will we find out that it is the ultimate explanation of humanity’s destiny, but our very relationship with God.

Conditioned

Why we are conditioned in material bodies and how we can transcend our present fallen state and rise to a higher state, to the spiritual platform and assert our common union with the divine entity, with God.

Because we have been trapped or encased in a material body, we tend to gloss over the fact that we are eternal souls. We identify with the body and grieve for its destruction. But the soul is never destroyed after the annihilation of the body. Because it is part and parcel of a larger spiritual entity which is God. It is like a spark of a larger whole and after the soul vacates the body, it goes back to the creator based on fruitive activities. The ultimate goal of the soul is to become perfect and achieve Godly status. It is bound by divine laws to avoid sinful activities, which will relegate it to a lower life form like plant or animal life but to engage in pious activities which will ensure the souls’ perfection and eventual union with the divine and end the souls’ vicious cycle of constant transmigration.

In our quest for spiritual enlightenment in this age of doctrinal wranglings and dogmatic stonewalling of spiritual truths, it is imperative we dislodge our attention from which tenet or concept is in accord with our traditional beliefs, our perception of reality or the standard of value with which we wants to be judged. We must accept that which has a valid premise and is beyond doubt. Reincarnation is not only a summarized version of the souls constant journey through birth and death, but the ultimate explanation of the souls purpose and how it can elevate itself to perfection, oneness with God. n the West Midlands, there’s a new concept in worship that is fast attracting Christians from all walks of life. Taking evangelism back to basics, The Rock Church in Walsall is designed people of all ages, races and backgrounds. It is headed by Ian Evans, who heard God specifically call him to start pastoring a new Church, since 2007, he has been pastoring in Walsall, impacting on communities throughout and, after God spoke to him he purchased a building he felt was specifically designated to him, and The Rock Church was created. Thereafter, a second location was formed as an increasingly large number of the multicultural

West Midlands felt they wanted to be part of something new. The on-going growth meant the ability to develop further areas of Church life from purchasing a double-decker bus for community outreach, running Alpha, holding ‘camps’ in a marquee, and beginning youth work.

Ian said: “My aim was to build a large, vibrant regional church that touches thousands of people and lifts them to a higher level through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and renewed Biblical mind-sets. TRC has some fantastic old-school gospel worship, 3-point sermons focusing on salvation and healings, special guests with testimonies, drama sketches and professional singing. We’ve had some amazing stories of healings and salvation, but the best is yet to come.” The Rock Church is always welcoming new people who want to experience good oldfashioned gospel.

t a panel-led debate, the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has unvieled their ‘Women in Business Toolkit,’ developed in conjunction with Europe Direct. The ‘toolkit’ includes an array of advice and guidance on statutory rights and best practice activities, which was launched at an event hosted by accountants, PwC and supported by Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Among those taking part in the launch was Kate Warrington, Assurance Director at PwC, who said: “Increasing diversity at all levels is a key priority. It’s about making sure there is a level playing field for all, regardless of gender or race, and doing this as quickly as we can. However, many women face challenges around juggling their career, motherhood and other caring responsibilities they may have. As a result, some may prefer to work flexible hours rather than the traditional working day of nine to five. The big question is how will businesses accommodate this?” Also present was Kate Cooper, who is founder of New Optimists, an on-line forum for scientists.

Chauvinism

She was critical of the discrimination and chauvinism of the past century, some of which she believes still cast a shadow over today’s workplace. She said: “In my generation, until the late 70s, legally I was

The Culturally Inspired Social Network

any have endeavoured to engage our attention through social media in recent years, none more so than the ever growing platforms of Facebook, Instagram Tumblr et al.

The Phoenix - January 2014

by Jonathan Maley

Yet where many business models have failed to cater for their audience’s vast and diverse cultural heritage, a new sensation has emerged, and by the looks of it, is ready to grow

and grow in 2014. The Iyaeko. com is an image sharing social platform that celebrates the very best in global fashion and style. Established by media entrepreneur Adetola Oredope in December last year, the newly born site aspires to reflect the very is

best in world culture. Why is this different to other social bodies you may ask? The creation was kick started in view to marvel in a rich tapestry of values with Oredope’s network celebrating forthcoming trends shared by fashion designers,

This sanctioned discrimination and unthinking chauvinism still affects today’s workplace. And still, if a woman wants to be high-powered and bear offspring, she faces the dilemma of (a) child care and (b) clearing up the household mayhem kids create, probably throughout her 30s and 40s. event managers and trend setters galore. Speaking exclusively to the Phoenix for the first time, the Iya Eko curator stated: “So many people are of the opinion that their clothing represents who they are, the site was established to celebrate this, to share our ideals and differences all in one place…” Iya Eko went public on the 20th December, 2013. In its first week the social sharing platform enjoyed over 1000 visitors, generating close to 8000 pages views with an average user spending over five minutes on the site. Since then, members have browsed through a colourful array of over 16,000 images, witnessing and sharing in a unique sense of pride. The 33 year old explained: “You can search for cultural dress from Nigeria on Instagram but you need to know where to look or which hashtag to search. Here at Iyaeko we want to provide that in an instance, all in one place.”

It’s ‘action learning’ for real. Add the accelerating pace of new technologies along with climate change, resource depletion and population pressures and everything’s in flux. However, while there are few women at the top today, women under 40 haven’t faced the same restrictions. A lot of younger women now assume they can get to the top. They can. There are more women in their early and mid-40s appearing in positions of power, notably in fields traditionally dominated by men. Somehow, as a society, we need to work out how to care for the next generation and give women the freedom to pursue their careers too.” GBCC policy adviser, Henrietta Brealey, said: “The toolkit includes advice and guidance on statutory rights and best practice activities. new scheme funded by Walsall College could create 250 jobs by 2015 and breathe new life into the region’s economy. The College, based at the heart of the industrial Black Country has been backed by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) with a proposed eleven million Businesses and Sports development. The Award winning academy which hosts around 14,000 pupils has agreed to donate what has been described as a substantial capital grant to ensure the projects go-ahead. College bosses forwarded their case to the SFA last September in a bid to support the scheme. The college have proposed vacant land by their Wisemore Campus will be used in the regeneration, at a time when Government funding is at a critical low. ing facilities in the region and a reported fee of £64 million has been estimated to erect the new Wisemore site. Walsall College Principal and Chief Executive Jatinder Sharma speaking to the Phoenix said: “We’re doing this for Walsall and the region as a whole. We wish to make a positive impact on every aspect of the community and provide a future for our children.” As well as a whole new sporting experience to emerge from the project, vocations and jobs will be spread across the incubation centre for business as well as a contemporary sports hall that will meet Sport England standards. The aim of the freshly built sport and business hub will be to facilitate growth within the local economy, as a response to the council announcing further cuts

that will deepen into the year 2015. Walsall Council’s Adrian Andrew’s, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Transport, stated: “I’d like to congratulate the College in securing this funding and for their efforts in facilitating another exciting development in Walsall…It shows we’re continually supporting businesses to create jobs and opportunities for local people.” Walsall College is one of the few educational establishments in the region to have been awarded as Outstanding in February 2013 by Ofsted, one reward in a long line of success that includes the Gold Award for investment of people. Mr Sharma concluded: “There isn’t a great deal of money for business to invest in locally, so if we can give that special something back, we hope the council can see the efforts being made for a brighter future.”

fter the hard slog of the January sales, retailers now prepare their stores for the forthcoming spring summer lines. What isn’t as for certain as their pending deliveries is the number of retailers who will breeze through their doors. To counter this, a new outlook which will forecast sale figures for the retailing year, has been developed using data analysis to understand real time consumer buying patterns and behaviours. Customer Experience Management (CX) has been created as a counter weapon to alleviate the pressure built by the online market. It is believed to be the new frontier in Customer Relationship Management, becoming a key component in the successful retailer's arsenal. The flagship design is expected to be used here in the midlands. It appears even more imperative for companies to have the right sources of information in an age whereby competition isn’t just from the store next door, but from the incessant growth of internet activity.

High-street to counter internet pressure with sale forecast ‘looking glass’ by Jonathan Maley

Retailers believe this new collection of data and analysis will maintain focus and perspective in what the experts have panelled, the toughest year to come. Hardeep Singh Garewal, President of European Operations at ITC Infotech said: "For Large swathes of retailers' customers are unknown to them, in some cases, up to 85%.

In many cases, companies have little knowledge of customer purchasing decisions. These insights enable companies to drive profits and customer satisfaction.” With Birmingham brimming with various shopping destinations and high streets, Customer Experience Management could prove a vital component in the battle to revive the smaller regions of the city, Black Country and Wolverhampton.

i t h Christmas behind us and another year upon us, there will be those of us missing the festive haze and counting down the days until next Christmas (indeed it’s not uncommon for some people to leave a Santa on their roof allyear round), whilst others will be glad to see the back of it. Christmas can be a real family battleground for some of us and all in all, not a particularly jolly experience. Things can go wrong from the Yuletide get-together. Imagine the following scenario: you drive to the dreaded in-laws on Christmas Eve, with your partner and kids. In a rush, you are involved in a collision. Apart from being stressful itself, the accident causes a great deal of tension between you and your partner and you argue for the rest of Christmas Eve. It even carries on at your in-laws’ house, who are their usual miserable selves. On Christmas day, with all the squabbling going on and a bit too much alcohol in your system, you blow your fuse and punch your partner’s elderly father. There is uproar amongst

the family and your mother-inlaw faints in a state of shock. Tragically, your mother-in-law dies two days later. That is not the end of your woes though as your partner’s family finds out that she had not written a Will. This causes ructions within the family as they fight over who should have what. You and your partner are also considering getting a divorce now. Hopefully, you will not quite have gone from one nightmare to the next over the Christmas period, but for those of you that didn’t enjoy Christmas, you may still be reeling from one of the incidents above or something similar as you start back at work. It is clear that you need a break, but you might also need a lawyer. If you have been unfortunate enough to suf-

How to stir a Chinese New Year treat by Jonathan Maley

A

fter the fun of Christmas and New Year, the January blues can easily set in, but did you know there’s another party occasion to look forward to straight after? Chinese New Year starts on January 31 and is a great excuse to celebrate with more food and drink. Stir-fries are of course obligatory – use whichever meat, fish and vegetables you like, but make sure you choose top quality condiments such as Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce for an authentic taste. Made with just four pure ingredients and no additives, it’s the brand that professional chefs prefer. They know the secret to its delicate, aromatic flavour results from the

ne of his first memories as a child was the smell of his mother’s cooking. He used to help out at his family restaurant, doing small chores and help around. The smell of beef, lamb and fish on the grill at that time was his favorite smell. The older he got, the more he wanted to learn about food. Issa Ohanian started getting more and more into cooking, inviting friends over and cooking for them. The more he cooked, the more he would fall in love with it all. And that's when he realized what he should be doing in life, what his calling was. With that, he started working at hotels as a cook at first. Then he built his way up to B, A, Chef de Partie, Sous-Chef, Chef de Cuisine and now he’s an

with Kikkoman Soy Sauce. Just make sure all the fresh ingredients are cut to the same size to cook evenly and you get the wok nice and hot. Simply serve with egg fried rice or some noodles drizzled with sesame oil. Finally, shop-bought prawn crackers and spring rolls will complete the meal along with a dip made from Kikkoman Soy Sauce and fresh ginger. Easy! Stir-fries aside, Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce is an essential seasoning for all sorts of dishes from soups to salad dressings. What’s more, it’s a fabulous way to add flavour without fat. Forget about rubbing butter or oil over a chicken before roasting – simply brush with Kikkoman then savour that fabulous meaty flavour.

Executive Chef. With all his years of experience, he went beyond Mediterranean and Oriental cuisine, and into Asian, Western, Continental and even Sushi cuisines, allowing him to be able to create more versatile menus. From 1998, up to 2006, he worked at the Coral Beach Hotel & Resort as VIP Chef, giving him the envious privilege of hosting presidents, prime ministers, royalty and VIPs from around the world; “This gave me the greatest of pleasures, serving some of the biggest names in the world in the best way I could,” he said. “Their complimentary remarks,” a hugely proud Ohanian continues; “were always a testament to my evergrowing ability to create in the kitchen. 014 is the year that people start to change their relationship with food and focus on what they are eating and the effect it is having on their health, says Elizabeth Peyton-Jones, food and health expert and author of 'Eat Yourself Young.' In explains further about the concept of 'we are what we eat' and how understanding a few simple principles can change our bodies and lives for the better, she says: "We are what we eat: This year, we start to understand that

the food we eat has profound consequences on our bodies (physical), attitudes (mental), and impacts on both our short and long term health. For example: if you have a headache, maybe your liver is congested and needs a light detox, or maybe you are dehydrated. Stomach pains normally occur because of a low grade inflammation or intolerance. Try and find the source and change your eating and drinking to help sort it out.

Healthcare leader brings wellness to Pakistan

It launched a line of nutraceutical products which is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease Nutraceutical, a word combining “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical”, means a product that provides health and medical benefits, including the prevention and management of disease. Sanofi Pakistan is initially launching 4 brands: CollaFlex, FreeFlex, E-Cod and Seacod, a cod liver oil that is helpful in improving immunity. The com-

bination of cod liver oil with vitamin E in E-Cod is good for the heart and beneficial in avoiding muscle cramps caused by vitamin deficiency, CollaFlex and FreeFlex - supplements that promote flexibility of joints and help keep joints healthy, particularly to avoid or manage conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Football stars back HIV testing campaign

W

ith one in five people infected with HIV in the UK remaining undiagnosed, Birmingham health chiefs are backing a campaign spearheaded by football stars from across the West Midlands to promote the importance of HIV testing. Ron Vlaar, Paul Robinson, Sam Ricketts and Chris Brunt all appeared in educational booklets, videos and posters which promote the health benefits of testing for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The four captains, who joined forces with Birmingham awareness campaign; ‘Saving Lives,’ also appeared on promotional buses across the city during November and De-

cember. One in five of those living with HIV in the UK do not know they are infected. People with undiagnosed HIV cannot receive treatment using today’s highly effective treatments, and may well unknowingly pass on the infection to partners. “Saving Lives is a campaign that is helping promote awareness,” said Aston Villa captain, Ron Vlaar. “We don’t want people to hear these silly things about sharing a kiss or having trouble with insurance.” Birmingham City captain Paul Robinson continues: “You can live a long happy life with HIV if you get tested.” The players’ clubs are helping promote the educational effort, and

‘Saving Lives’ published a special booklet featuring its footballing ambassadors to coincide with the National HIV Testing Week last November. “People can get tested very easily,” says West Bromwich Albion’s skipper Brunt. “They can go to their local hospital, their GP or a sexual health clinic.” Wolves captain Sam Ricketts is clear on the message: “Always stay safe, and go and get tested.” ‘Saving Lives’ works with local service providers to publicise testing centres in towns and cities nationwide. The charity’s campaign aims to reach new audiences and talk about HIV in a way which resonates today.

Tariq Wajid, General Manager of Sanofi Pakistan said: “We are proud to be the pioneers of a new era of wellness in Pakistan. Modern lifestyles have become very fast-paced and stressful; diet is not always as balanced or healthy as it should be. Our nutraceutical line will help people maintain a state of wellness and as we all know, a strong, healthy person is less likely to fall ill than a less healthy one.” Sanofi is an integrated healthcare leader focused on patients’ and individual needs. The introduction of nutraceuticals positions Sanofi across the health spectrum, addressing health needs ranging from wellness to prevention (vaccines) to management and cure.

“The last mainstream HIV awareness campaign was many years ago,” said the charity’s Medical Director, Dr. Steve Taylor. “Late diagnosis is associated with increased mortality, and so we need to persuade people to take the test by reducing the stigma that still surrounds what is now a chronic, treatable condition.” Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Councilor Steve Bedser, said: “HIV treatment has moved on dramatically in recent years and it’s now a manageable condition but late diagnosis can lead to unnecessary complications. “That’s why testing is so important. The sooner you are diagnosed, the sooner your treatment can begin and that increases your chances of leading a long and healthy life.” ‘Saving Lives’ is the first UK HIV charity of its kind to be supported by major Premier League football clubs.

Nikki gets taken out by TV funnyman

I

t definitely wasn’t a case of ‘no likey, no lighty’ when Nikki Chilton met comedian and TV presenter Paddy McGuinness at an annual awards ceremony. Nikki, who manages Slimming World groups in Birmingham, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Paddy when he co-hosted the Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s chair and founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Bolton-born Paddy, who shot to fame in Channel 4 comedy ‘Phoenix Nights,’ alongside school friend Peter Kay, before becoming a popular stand-up comedian and TV presenter on shows including ITV1’s ‘Take Me Out,’ said: “I have to admit the most I knew about Slim-

ming World before the awards was a gag in Peter’s routine that refers to Slimming World as being a £1 cheaper than its competitors! Jokes aside, I was genuinely amazed to hear about what a difference people like Nikki who run and manage Slimming World groups make to people’s lives. At the ceremony I met lots of people who’d lost incredible amounts of weight and it had totally changed their lives. Before I started working in comedy I was a fitness instructor so I know how important it is to look after yourself, but equally I know it’s not always easy to motivate yourself. So, having the right help and support to keep you on track really

is invaluable.” Nikki said meeting Paddy at the event, which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre, was the cherry on the top of a great year for Slimming World: “Obviously the most important thing of all is that our members have lost weight and improved their health throughout 2013 and we’re so proud of all of them. But as well as seeing stonking success on the scales, we’ve had a lot of fun throughout the year too – we’ve held parties in group, raised money for charity and members have cheered each other on with every step of their weight loss journey.”

As well as the turbine, the show also uses a new, state-of-the-art 3D zipline flying system, which enables the performers to fly above all areas of the enormous stage. With a musical score including “Our House” by Madness, “Sailing”by Rod Stewart and “Angels” by Robbie Williams, this really was a truly spectacular event enjoyed by both adults and children alike. Lights, Camera, Action At The 25th Palm Springs Film Festival!

P

alm Springs rolled out the red carpet as it welcomed a host of the world’s most celebrated international film stars for the 25th Palm Springs International Film Festival. The star-studded event also marked the Californian city’s recent 75th anniversary. Founded by the late Sonny Bono during his reign as city mayor, the week and a halflong film festival has grown to become one of the biggest film festivals in North America - a can’t-miss event for film lovers and casual cinemagoers alike, featuring more than 200 films from 70 countries and various

premieres. In total, there was 15 screens throughout Palm Springs showcased films across countless genres. The festival also featured special events, filmmaker tributes and gala receptions. The Black Tie Awards Gala was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center, honouring individuals in the film industry with awards. This year’s female actress honorees included Sandra Bullock, recently gracing the silver screen in 'Gravity,' who received the Desert Palm Achievement Award. Matthew McConaughey, receive the male actor equivalent. Known as Hollywood’s

playground and a burgeoning film festival destination, Palm Springs hosts several high-profile film festivals throughout the year including the Palm Springs International ShortFest; Festival of Native Film & Culture; Cinema Diverse; and more. They are appropriately held in a city famed for its celebrity appeal, dating back to the 1950s when Hollywood’s glitterati relocated and set up home in the city. Visitors today can discover the secluded retreats and exclusive estates of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Bob Hope, or follow in their famous footsteps on the city’s own Walk of Stars.

ilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey and The Dwarves continue their journey towards The Lonely Mountain in order to reclaim their homeland of Erebor from the fearsome dragon known as Smaug. However, with cracks beginning to show within the group and an evil greater than Smaug preparing for war, their mission is going to be far more difficult than any of them could have ever imagined. The first movie in this on-going, prequel trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,

opened in 2012 to heavily mixed reviews. Many people were left disappointed and felt that the trilogy began with a whimper rather than the bang they were all hoping for. For the record, I am not one of those people. I thoroughly enjoyed An Unexpected Journey, but having said that, it must be declared that The Desolation of

Smaug is heads and tails above its predecessor in almost every way. The direction, the writing, the characters, the set pieces, the action, and the visual effects – everything is improved upon in this highly anticipated sequel. As always, Peter Jackson directs this most recent adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy masterpiece and he could not have done a better job. Jackson is on the form of his life here and fills each and every frame with excellence. The set design, the costumes, the visual effects – everything comes together seamlessly in order to help Jackson create his own personal vision of MiddleEarth. Ever since The Lord of

the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring, Jackson has worked tirelessly to craft this vast and immersive world that so many of us have become so familiar with and fond of. It is wonderful to know that this material is in the hands of a man who clearly has a great respect and admiration for Tolkien and this is exactly what makes

these movies so great; they are made by the ultimate fan. Peter Jackson was born to make these movies. The cast are all fantastic. Martin Freeman is a joy to watch as Bilbo Baggins as he infuses a sense of humour and wonderment into Bilbo that makes him such a fan and quirky character. However, this time around, there is a darkness to Bilbo that was absent in the previous chapter. The ring he now possesses is clearly beginning to affect his sanity, causing for some striking changes to his personality. Fortunately, these changes are very sparse and very brief but they are clearly building to something much worse. Ian McKellen is Gandalf – it really is that simple. His character is not featured as heavily as he has been in previous chapters, but he still plays a significant role in the events that transpire. Richard Armitage returns as the tormented Thorin Oakenshield who is relentless and unyielding in his desire to reclaim his homeland of Erebor. Like Bilbo, there are some changes evident in Thorin that seem to suggest his desperation for victory is having an adverse affect on his persona. He seems to be motivated by rage and is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. The Desolation Of Smaug also brings with it the welcome return of Orlando Bloom’s heroic elf, Legolas and introduces us to Tauriel, played by Lost’s Evangeline Lilly; Legolas’ confidant who is every bit the warrior he is.

Legolas and Tauriel are fantastic and they are involved in some of the most spectacular action set-pieces in the entire movie. Considering that the character of Tauriel doesn’t even exist in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Evangeline Lilly has done a brilliant job of effortlessly becoming a part of this world. She fits right in. The action in this movie is stunning and is choreographed with a joyful extravagance that truly makes it a pleasure to behold. One scene in particular involves Legolas standing on the heads of two dwarves as he mercilessly eliminates a horde of Orcs with

his legendary bow whilst Tauriel is engaged in vicious, fast-paced combat with the same beasts. It’s brilliant to watch Legolas and Tauriel try to one-up each other in terms of their own bad-

dragon, Smaug – and what an introduction it is. Smaug is, without question, the best dragon ever committed to film. He is immense and terrifying yet witty and charming, thanks in

assery. The Desolation of Smaug also brings with it the long-awaited introduction of the legendary

part to the excellent voice work by Benedict Cumberbatch, who bestows a sinister arrogance upon Smaug that makes every moment we spend with him magical. His back-and-forth dialogue with Bilbo is fantastic and builds slowly to a rousing confrontation between Smaug, Bilbo and The Dwarves. The CGI is mindblowing and serves to bring this colossal character to life in a very real and very vivid way. The Desolation of Smaug is brilliant. It is fun, dark, scary and action-packed. It also ends with a wonderful cliff-hanger that teases what is certain to be an actionpacked and epic final chapter. A must see. 10/10

I

t can definitely be said that gamers seem to get a pretty bad hand dealt to them by the media, especially when there is a new controversial game release (see GTA V recently for that) or atrocities committed in the “real world” by people apparently addicted to violent games. All gamers seem to get tarred with the same brush after event like these, but for “The Worlds Best Gamer”, Athene and hundreds of thousands of other gamers worldwide, the stigma of “being a gamer” is something they are actively working hard to abolish. Gaming for Good is an initiative that grew out of the Gaming

for Good movement that started in the AtheneLive community. Now, it is a platform where gamers can get new games by donating to charity. All revenue from the website goes directly to the PayPal account of the Save The Children charity, and in return, donators get points which allow them to purchase games from the huge online catalogue. The games that are available on the website, have been do-

nated by supporting developers and publishers, to help aid this great cause. To date, Gaming for Good has raised over $10million for Save the Children, and raised the profile of gamers working for the greater good into the mainstream, with Athene getting airtime on a number of major American news shows to explain the Gaming for Good movement, and all the good work that he has personally seen happen-

Concept : Project Christine

P

roject Christine is a revolutionary new concept design that will change the way users view PCs. It will allow any user to build and customize his or her PC in any configuration without any prior technical knowledge. Further, as new upgrades come to the market, the same PC can be easily and quickly upgraded without additional technical assistance and without the fear of incompatibility or obsolescence. Project Christine’s modular design allows users to easily build their PCs by allowing them to select and install modules on-the-fly, whether it’s a CPU, GPU, or memory and storage configuration. The PCI-Express architecture of Project Christine automatically syncs components. Need more graphics processing power or storage? Easy – a user can slot-in additional graphics modules and add more storage by either swappingout the existing storage drives or adding more modules. Equally exciting, Project Christine is able to run multiple operating systems that the user may require. The modularity of Project Christine makes it perpetually customizable, offering plug-and-play upgradability as new and improved technology evolves, ostensibly eliminating the need to re-

place entire systems. Modules connected to the PCI-Express backbone can be added in any order or combination, featuring up to quad-SLI graphics, multiple SSD and RAID storage components, I/O and even power supplies, ensuring maximum flexibility. The cable-less design of each sealed module is entirely self-contained and features active liquid cooling and noise cancelation, which allows Razer to factory overclock components without voiding warranties, safely and quietly. The system also features a touch-screen LCD display that indicates control and maintenance information. “Project Christine is a new concept design that will revolutionize the way users view the traditional PC. This is the first gaming system that is able to keep pace with technology and could allow consumers to never buy another PC, or gaming system, again,” says MinLiang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director. “We have a history of bringing incredibly innovative concept systems to market and it’s fair to say that Project Christine is a very exciting new prospect for future development.” Obviously as this is just a concept we don’t have a release date or price point, but considering the hardware they’re talking about, and knowing Razer’s pricing, your wallet could take a hit!

april 21st - may 21st

A religious, ethical, or cultural question will arise at the start of the year. You have strong feelings about this issue, but may be forced to keep quiet while tempers rage out of control. There will be a time and place to air your views, but it will not fall during the first week of January. Wait for cooler heads to prevail. An impressive business executive will give offer support toward the middle of the month. The 16th might bring unexpected news about a relative or neighbour. You may have to juggle your schedule to help this friend out of a tight spot. Career matters assume an increased importance near the 30th, when a behind the scenes supporter recommends you for a fantastic job. Don’t bother exaggerating your educational background. Energy and enthusiasm will count for a lot more than where you went to school. Ask a well connected friend to write a letter of recommendation for you.

Learning a new skill will be trickier than you anticipated during the early part of January. Your teacher’s methods will be unorthodox, to say the least. Try not to get distracted by their tendency to go off topic. It may be necessary to hire a tutor to master this subject. In the end, you may have to mentor fellow students who are even more confused. You won’t be happy with test results on or around the 16th. Quite a few questions will address topics you didn’t address in class. If you’re dissatisfied with the training you’ve received, you should complain to the powers that be. As the 30th approaches, life will become considerably easier. Let your family pamper and pet you. You’ll benefit from the extra tender loving care. Take an authority figure’s promises with a grain of salt in the final days of January or you could be sorely disappointed.

oct 24th - nov 22ndt

The earliest days of the month warn against lending and borrowing money. A joint account could be the source of contention. Try not to let your temper spiral out of control. If you’re worried about debt, take this opportunity to set up a repayment plan. Consolidate your loans and try to lower your interest rate. In this market, creditors are willing to work with you. Be sparing with your purchases, even if you make good money. The more conservative you are with funds, the better off you will be. Payment from a job you performed some time ago will arrive on or around the 16th. Unfortunately, you’ll have to spend all of these funds on bills. Let this be your impetus to begin a savings fund. By putting a set portion of your income into an interest bearing account, your finances will improve dramatically this year. An opportunity to travel will arrive quite suddenly as January turns to February.

A new source of income becomes available in the opening days of the year, but there will be a hitch. The work you will be expected to do is sporadic. You’ll have to be on call and ready to contribute at a moment’s notice. This isn’t exactly conducive to relaxation. To add insult to injuries, cash will be very thin on the ground. You’ll have to struggle to pay a bill toward mid-month. Operating on a shoestring budget won’t be easier, but it is better than going deeper into debt. Try to have a little extra cash in reserve near the 16th, when an unexpected expense will crop up. The New Moon on the 30th will afford a welcome opportunity to have fun with friends. A short trip for pleasure could also be in the cards. Be ready to pack your bag at a moment’s notice. Expect a power struggle to erupt at the end of January.

It will take time to get adjusted to a new relationship. A romantic or business partner will feel threatened by this arrangement and try to assert their independence in disruptive ways. Stand up for your rights, or you’ll set a bad precedent. You have a lot to bring to this partnership, provided you’re allowed to state your opinions and command respect. Just because you’re a nurturing person doesn’t mean you should endure temper tantrums. By the 16th, you’ll be completely tired of yielding the floor to others. You’ll have to fight to get the care and attention you deserve. Things will get better near the 30th, when the New Moon favours mating and relating with a dynamic executive. If you’re already in a relationship, keep your eyes open for an unexpected refund, dividend, or inheritance. Put this money toward a new entertainment centre, computer, or smartphone. It’s a great time for an upgrade.

You have a chance to revamp your image during the opening days of January, but don’t make any hasty decisions. A gradual change is preferable to a radical overhaul. Don’t do anything you will later regret. It’s especially important to take a relative’s feedback with a dose of salt. Doing something to defy an annoying relative could backfire. If you need advice, ask a friend whose taste you admire. Their tips will help you project a confident but sexy image that is very impressive. Take care you remember a special occasion near the 16th, or you could make a friend, lover, or business partner really angry. A generous and thoughtful gift is definitely in order. An exciting moneymaking opportunity will arrive on the 30th. This will be a great way to master a cutting edge gadget or complicated software program. Your knowledge will make you a hot commodity on the job market.

The early days of January are always good for launching a fitness regimen, but beware of pushing yourself too fast, too hard. Take things slow, especially during the first two weeks of the month. If you strain a muscle or ligament, ice it down and revert to gentle stretching instead. Spending more time at home will bring contentment to all concerned toward the middle of January, when an elderly relative or neighbour could use your help. By the 16th, you will have earned a break from work. If you continue to push yourself, a careless error could occur. Take the day off. Two heads are definitely better than one near the 30th, when the New Moon favours partnerships of all kinds. A chance encounter could lead to love. If you are out of your depth with a business matter, enlist the aid of a professional. Their fee will be well earned.

You’ll be forced to let go of an old grudge in the opening days of January. In some ways, you’re not ready to forgive and forget. Still, you owe it to yourself to try. Clinging to this issue will cause you to miss a golden opportunity. Walk away from a fight, even if it means giving in to a perceived rival. You have bigger fish to fry. Fortunately, a respected authority figure will notice your decision to take the high road and offer a reward in the form of an impressive office. You might have to quit a job near the 16th, simply because it no longer suits your lifestyle. Try not to take it personally if your boss is angered by your resignation. The 30th brings an exciting opportunity for a makeover. Be prepared to listen if a fashion conscious friend or neighbour wants to share their insights on up to date style. It could spell change for you.

The road to romance could get a little rocky in early January. A promising flirtation will be fraught with problems. You want to know where you stand, and don’t appreciate it when the object of your affection plays hot and cold. You’re better off waiting for someone who is more emotionally mature. If you’re already in a relationship, you’ll iron out a misunderstanding during the second week of January. The Full Moon on the 16th forces you to cancel personal plans for the sake of a friend. Resist the urge to abandon your loved one in their hour of need, even if the problem has been self-inflicted. Your loyalty will be soon repaid. A terrific job offer will arrive toward the end of January. You could be offered a position with terrific benefits on or around the 30th. Relationship matters improve dramatically as January turns to February, thanks to a heart-to-heart chat.

Social opportunities abound in early January, but beware of letting just anyone into your circle of trust. A seemingly wild rebel is more trouble than they are worth. You enjoy their irreverent sense of humour, but it won’t seem so funny when you become the butt of their jokes. Stick close to friends who have proven their loyalty and stuck by you. The chance to volunteer for a religious, cultural, or educational organisation will give you a lift in mid-January. The days around the 16th could bring disappointing news. You may decide to part ways with a disappointing lover. Alternately, you might have to scrap a creative project that just isn’t working. Life will become much easier toward the end of January, when you get a welcome opportunity to rest, relax and rejuvenate. Schedule a spa appointment near the 30th. Keep your eyes open for special money saving deals and you’ll save a fortune this year.

dec 22nd - jan 20th jan 21st - feb 19th feb 20th - mar 20th

aug 24th - sept 23rd

The opening days of the year may be filled with emotional turmoil. There will be disagreements about a potential move and tensions will be running high. In the end, you may have to defer to someone who has more power and money. You can burn off steam by throwing yourself into an intensive work project. It may be necessary to make a public presentation on or around the 16th. You won’t be able to please all the members of your audience. Some people will question your judgement, but stand your ground. Things will lighten up considerably as January draws to a close. The 30th will be perfect for launching a creative project or embarking on a romance. News of an impending birth could also reach your ears. Have you been longing to go on vacation? Take this opportunity to check your documentation, buy tickets and reserve hotel rooms. You’ll find some fantastic rates.

nov 23rd - dec 21st

A new career opportunity will present itself in the opening days of 2014. You’re not sure if you want to sacrifice your freedom on the altar of professional success. If you accept this position, you can expect to spend lots of time away from home. Decide whether this is really best for your family. It may be necessary to take the job for financial reasons. That doesn’t mean you have to stay with this company forever. Schedule a conference with your nearest and dearest on the 16th, when you will have to make a decision. Your social life will start to pick up during the second half of the month. Be sure to attend a party on the 30th, when the New Moon will put you in the path of some highly original people. These friends can help you blaze a trail to another career. Jobs in the technology sector will be particularly appealing.

Last-minute cramming is not the way to revise

A

ll-night revision sessions are not the best approach to exams, says research. Anyone who thinks last-minute exam cramming always works is in for some bad news. Psychologists from Sheffield University have published results from their research showing that learning is much more effective when spaced out over stretches of time. It showed leaving a day between practice sessions was a much better way of gaining skills than continuous play. Professor Tom Stafford says this reflects how memories are stored. He was able to analyse how people around the world improved when playing the Axon computer game. “Cramming for long intense stretches ahead of a test might feel like more is being learned,

but this is illusory. A better way of revising or learning is to plan over a much longer period, with substantial breaks between study sessions,” he said. He found a clear pattern showing that people were more successful when gaps were left between sessions of playing. “Leaving a day between sessions did not weaken performance, but strengthened it,” he said. This is because it makes better use of how the brain stores information. "The study suggests that learning can be improved. You can learn more efficiently or use the same practice time to learn to a higher level," says Prof Stafford. The volume of learning is less important than how that time is structured.

education, the report said "large increases in the proportion of students attending good or outstanding schools can be seen in Solihull, Walsall, Telford and Wrekin, and Sandwell." Councillor Simon Hackett, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, welcomed the news and praised the hard work of parents, children, schools, staff and governing bodies. He said: "With such a strong start to their primary school education we are seeing, year on year, more able and more skilled pupils entering our secondary schools. We are

now looking forward to the improvements this will deliver in the years to come at GCSE level." The council acknowledged the number of pupils gaining 5 A* C GCSEs including English and maths was not yet high enough, he added; "But over the last five years Sandwell's results have improved by 18 per cent compared to a national improvement of only nine per cent," he said. "Clearly, we are catching up very quickly." It was disappointing the Ofsted report did not mention the number of pupils getting 5 A* - C not including English and maths is significantly better than national performance, added Councillor Hackett. In addition to this, the council was being very proactive in ensuring the best secondary school education for our children.

HND Photography students Hannah Walklett, 19, and Kristofor Green, 32, were shortlisted in the final of EEF ‘Made in Britain’ Photography Awards after their submitted course work captured the imagination of judges. And Shane Butler, who was a HND student at Walsall College until last year, was named the winner in the ‘Best Photograph By An Amateur Photographer’ category. His striking image of a technician tending a vat of hot molten metal was praised for its “intensity” and “rich, warm tones and shadow”. ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

W

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons

why a child is placed in care. There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

Adoption & Fostering Our ongoing campaign to help the children in need in our communities

Minority Adoption

I Adoption new focus for Channel 4 series by Jonathan Maley

J

ust when producers within Channel Four were under the hammer for releasing ‘Benefits Street’, a wholly inaccurate representation of those on Britain’s streets on the dole, or as those of us in Birmingham would call the UB40, the channel launches another potential spectacle, this time directed at children seeking adoption. ‘Find me a Family’ follows three households of would be adopters in plight to find homes

for children who are yet to be, and are very difficult to be homed. The growing issue within our communities is one so great that despite channel four’s best efforts to undermine the benefit system, they appear to have redeemed themselves with this tear jerking journey to finding adoption. With well-directed interviews and heart-warming pieces to camera, the new series won’t be breaking Benefit Street’s viewing figures, yet dignity is expected to return in the eyes of those watching the edgy channel after the watershed.

t is a sad fact that a child, of any colour or background has to go into public care because of neglect, or abuse, or because their parents cannot cope. Adoption is one of the best ways of giving those children a family for life. More than 4,000 children across the UK are in need of adoption every year. Unfortunately, children from some African, African-Caribbean, Asian and other ethnic minority communities often have to wait longer for families to provide permanent homes. Black boys, over the age of five, in particular, wait the longest. Many people consider adoption, but never look into it further, convinced they will be ruled out due to the many myths surrounding who can and cannot adopt. It is important to remember that the UK has one of the most open, liberal and supportive set of criteria for those interested in adopting a child. People are needed who could parent children from African, African-Caribbean, Asian and Mixed Ethnicity communities. Adopters are needed – and welcomed – from every sector of society, from every income

level, ethnic group and religious persuasion. Misconceptions that persist include issues around age, marital status and sexual orientation. But, in reality, you don’t need to be under 40. There is no upper age limit. You can adopt if you are single, or in a same-sex relationship. You don’t need to be wealthy, or own your own home. And issues such as being overweight will not automatically rule you out. As long as you are over 21 and do not have a criminal conviction for certain crimes, you can apply to be assessed as an adopter. Savita de Sousa, the BME policy consultant for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), said: “African-Caribbean boys tend to wait longer for families as there are a limited number of ‘forever’ families available to meet their emotional, developmental and spiritual needs. “Basic things like hair care and skin care are important to a child growing up. African, AfricanCaribbean, Asian and Mixed Ethnicity children need to develop a positive sense of their identities where they feel good about themselves and their connection

to the outside world. “The experience of ‘difference’ and disconnectedness from origins are a part of the adoption experience, so we want to encourage people from across the African-Caribbean, Asian and Mixed Ethnicity communities who are able to relate to these experiences to find out more about adoption. “Knowing that you can make a difference in a child’s life will be amazing and seeing the change in them will make you smile.” We, at BAAF, believe passionately in the importance of ‘forever’ families for all children. We know that children do best in life if they have a secure and loving family of their own – a family who will help them feel confident and encourage them to develop positive racial, cultural and religious identities. Adoption is a life-long commitment and BAAF knows from existing adoptive families that, while it can be hard work, the rewards are huge. So if you think you could be a forever family to a child from black or ethnic minority communities and would like to find out more, please visit www.baaf.org.uk

In the ongoing pursuit for women to achieve hair nirvana, the first online social hair and style network has been developed with this express goal in mind. Beauty technology company, Techturized Inc. have launched Myavana, an online social hair and style network where women can collaborate on haircare and styling issues. Users can upload hairstyles, share beauty tips (including information about styling products and preferred salons), and styling techniques.

The Phoenix – January 2014

Founders Candace Mitchell, Chanel Martin, Jess Watson, and Joy Buolamwini saw an opportunity to give women a platform to share haircare and hairstyle knowledge. The personal hair experiences the style-conscious engineers made them keenly aware of the challenges women, particularly Black women, have finding haircare solutions when they travel or when they change hairstyles. Acting CEO Candace explains, "Many of us have dealt with the challenges of our daily hair maintenance since we were little girls as we mirrored our mothers tackle our complex curls and thick manes. Generation after generation, there hasn't been a central resource established to simplify

this process, whether it be finding a salon or stylist in your local area or receiving tips and suggestions that are unique to your hair challenges. It's time to change that and we aim to meet the hair care needs of women everywhere in an innovative way." Myavana encourages women to form communities based on hair texture, desired hairstyles, or geography. Users can follow desired hairstyles by "Girlfriending" users who post images with that style. Each time a user accepts a Girlfriend request, the community can follow that user's hair journey

Radio DJs at launch of Royal Caribbean’s latest ship

Js Lauren Laverne and Stuart Maconie hosted a celebration of music to launch a new ship from the Royal Caribbean International, which has music at its heart. At the recently held event, music industry expert and author, Maconie, was tasked with researching what makes a song an anthem and what is it about an anthem that gets under people’s skin. As part of the research, Stuart, put together a list of songs with anthemic status – both recently popular and traditional – and asked the nation to choose the song that makes them the happiest. Especially composed versions

of the top 5 anthems were performed on the night by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, including; "It’s a Beautiful Day" by U2, The Beatles’ "Hey Jude," Robbie Williams’ "Angels," plus classics "Nimrod" by Elgar and "Jerusalem" by Parry. Speaking at the launch of the ship, ‘Anthem of the Seas,’ Radio 1 DJ, Laverne, commented: “Bob Geldof once said that everybody talks about the power of art, but you don’t often stand in front of a painting and cry, but music has that power over us. It’s the closest thing we’ve got to magic.” Time was that if you were looking for amazing music on holiday, you’d be looking at a city break in the likes of New York

or a brief moment commuters forgot the stormy skies of the last few days as Air France messages lit up the London skyline. To celebrate the launch of its new low fares and on the year of its 80th anniversary, Air France projected laser images into the sky to captivate Londoners and banish January blues. The laser images were beamed from a black cab, as it stopped in iconic locations. Messages encouraging everyone to start planning

their next trip include: January Blues? Fly Worldwide; The Sky. Our passion and Air France Sky. With prices starting at just £404 return, there was plenty to smile about. Air France, with the approval of the Civil Aviation Authority, is the first airline to ever do this type of innovative action in London. The airline is currently supporting the campaign through all its online platforms and Social Media channels and has created a video showcasing the highlights of the experience. Additionally, there is an

online competition that will give one lucky winner two long haul tickets and the opportunity to have their suggested message filmed in the sky. After London, the light show will head to Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh –some of Air France regional departures, to promote the airline’s low fares. These offers are available to dozens of destinations worldwide and are valid until February 5

She has a keen understanding of the product, and a wealth of experience working with the UK

travel industry. I look forward to her leadership in reinforcing the destination’s image and promoting brand Antigua and Barbuda in Europe. egendary designer, Diane von Fürstenberg, celebrated her New Year's Eve birthday by holidaying on the premier French Caribbean destination of Guadeloupe Islands. The fashion icon posted a mesmerizing sunset image: 'Sunset in Guadeloupe! Love Diane' from her DVF official account (http:// instagram.com/dvf ) showing what believes to be her husband Barry

Diller EOS yacht anchored off the French Caribbean Archipelago. It looked like a French Caribbean Bon Anniversaire and joyeuses fêtes de fin d'année for Diane, and the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe Islands was the perfect setting for celebrating. The archipelago is comprised of five islands, Basse-Terre, GrandeTerre, Marie-Galante, La Desirade and finally Les Saintes the lost paradise which evokes nostalgia

for the Saint Barth of 10 years ago. A long-time playground for the French including legendary fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, Academy Award Best Actor Jean Dujardin and renowned Model/DJ Willy Monfret (The destination's US brand ambassador), Guadeloupe Islands is an exceptional source for memorable travel experiences.

Chief Executive Officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Colin C. James said, “Miss Osborne has been particularly effective in building a large network of business relationships with European tourism partners. Additionally, the PR projects such as the recently successful X-Factor TV episodes that Cherrie has spearheaded have resulted in immense exposure for our destination. On behalf of the entire team, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Cherrie as the first Antigua and Barbuda national to lead the Tourism Authority’s efforts in the UK and Europe. It a great achievement for her and this promotion is well deserved.” With the increase in airlift from the UK for the upcoming winter season and the recent marketing efforts in building brand Antigua and Barbuda, the UK is expected to record a growth in overall visitor arrivals this year.

Oh, the experiences we have!

O

h, the experiences we have! Here I am in my hotel room, working on my speech. Actually, trying to work on my speech, because somehow, the ideas aren't flowing, the thoughts incoherent, the phrasing disjointed. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe I'm tired, maybe it's because it wasn't too long ago that I landed; maybe too much on my mind, maybe I'm simple losing my touch; maybe it's nothing at. Whatever it is, something's lacking in this speech. So I decide to take a walk those who know me know I walk a tad fast. To where? I don't know. And, as I teach in my communications classes, if you don't know where you're going you end up somewhere else. Fast. Often, it's somewhere you'd rather not go. But not today. This time I end up in the Botanical Gardens, you know. Oh, the experiences we have! By the way, is this Dr. Seuss? My daughter reminded me during the few minutes I spent with her on Monday that she read every Dr. Seuss story, his every book by the time she was eight and to this day she quotes Dr. Seuss. Often. Oh, the places she’ll go! OK, I digress. Anyway, as I walk through these beautiful gardens the music catches my attention. Compelling music. Absorbing music. Composed and performed by birds. It seems that every one of the nearly 200 species is involved in this open air concert. There's cawing and whistling and cooing and chirping. Every caw caw, every chirp chirp, every hoot hoot, every tweet tweet, every chip chip and crack crack performed with precision, the modulation perfect. Maybe that's what I should talk about, I tell myself: "You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go” Definitely Dr. Seuss. And, oh yes, the experiences we have! As I take in the sweet melody and contemplate my speech, a gentleman comes up to me. His car won't start and he wants me to "give me a push". What?

Me? Push a car? But I do.

ture enthusiasts. And in the gold mines as well! Paradise is found in your unique and enriching holiday experience. Yes, paradise is found here. It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. You know this is Dr. Seuss.

And as it moves I tell myself “I didn't realise I was this strong.” The engine kicks into life, the car starts. It pulls away and the man puts out his right arm and performs some sort of sign language for “thank you.” One more experience to tick off my "must do before I die" list, I think.

And, since paradise is found here, and paradise is calling, you must tell the world because the world needs the birds of paradise to sing to it.

Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try. I continue walking these amazing gardens, enjoying the symphony. And as the sun begins to fall and darkness begins to emerge, a new chorus rises. This time it's an orchestra.

But how will you tell this fascinating story? How do you communicate it to the whole wide world? How do you keep paradise, while turning it into a major source of income, a tool for development of every Guyanese?

This melody is enticing, beckoning, calling. I can hardly resist the temptation to go in search of the creators of such amazing sounds. But they are somewhere in the distance. There must be dozens, prob-

Every part played to perfection, every echo a gift from heaven. Love is forever here. I have to listen some more, and the chorus continues. A woman selling snacks tells me they are parrots. She doesn’t tell me what species, but it really doesn’t matter. This is music the way nature intended it.

It's the only bird I've seen today, everyone else is in the trees singing to me. I can’t decipher the lyrics but, gosh, the melody is sweet. As I head back to the hotel, I’m thinking, whoever said paradise is lost hasn’t been here, hasn’t experience this spontaneous concert, this symphony from nature, composed and performed flawlessly by

I'm making my way back to the gates that keep heaven in and the hellish traffic out. An unfamiliar bird invites me to the seven ponds and the tombs of past leaders. The markings are faded. birds. This is not paradise lost, this is paradise found. Paradise is found here in the natural beauty and fascinating cultural heritage of this vast country. Paradise is found in the wealth of attributes that you offer adventure seekers, hikers, birders and eco-tourists. Think of your next door neighbour becoming a star in an instant thanks to YouTube; Think of the billions of Friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter. Think Pinterest and Instagram. Communication in an instant. Right now, as I speak someone in the audience is sharing my every word in 140 characters or less, posting my image, sharing videos of me with friends and followers everywhere from Grenada to Greenland. Right this very second, my son in Kunming, China can share with me live,

what he’s preparing for breakfast. Technology has made our world smaller, brought our countries closer, made our ability to communicate easier; made the playing fields leveller. Yes, what an exciting time we live in as communicators! Communication is key, they say, but no one said it was easy. Or, as the Irish playwright, essayist, novelist and short story writer, George Bernard Shaw so eloquently stated, the single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has been achieved. In essence, we take things for granted, we believe that as long as we say what we want to say, communication is complete. We often forget that communication is an exchange of ideas, it’s the flow of information from one person to another; and in order to be effective the sender and the receiver must be on the same wave length, if you may. Communication is what the other person hears, not what you say. It’s the music I hear when the birds do the chirp chirp and the caw caw and the tweet tweet. It’s the image that I visualize as the jaguar races across my TV screen and the Kaiteur Falls rush down my tablet. And, since nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood as Freeman Teague, Jr said, the onus is on us to ensure that communication is achieved both in words and in deeds. Action still speaks louder than words. Of course, the task isn’t always easy, the hurdles are many, the environment challenging. For the most part, our tourism remains under-developed, and the programmes under-funded. However, despite the hurdles, despite the challenges, you should never give in or give up. In the words of the late British prime minister, Winston Churchill, never, never, never! To read Johnson’s full speech, check out the article on our website at www.thephoenixnewspaper.com!

s many are expanding their trade, and life-experiences, on these shores, one leading former Premier League footballer is bucking the trend by expanding his career in pastures very new – and, under the circumstances – very rare. After more than ten years at Aston Villa, former full-back, Jlloyd Samuel, is enjoying a new life with Esteghlal, in the Iranian Pro League, with the former marauding left-back encouraging more British players to follow suit: “Players should try and experience different things and playing abroad provides that. It will improve your football education, your life experiences and also allows you to improve your technical levels too.” Now 32, he is enjoying a sec-

In England, they have everything they need so, maybe they need to step out of their comfort zones and test themselves – as players and as human beings.” From the West Midlands to the Middle East, Jlloyd Samuel has injected a new sense of impetus

Blues Ladies manager, David Parker said: "The whole point of it being the Champions League is about testing yourself against the best in Europe but it's good for English football that we have two clubs still in there." The Globetrotters are the first organization in sports to let fans vote on rules when the team introduced the concept last year. Since the fan response was so overwhelming, the team is doing it again – but with a major twist. This year's online ballot includes three never-before-seen revolutionary rules: • Hot Hand Jersey – Both teams will have a “Hot Hand Jersey” they can pass among each other. The player who is wearing this jersey will receive double points on made baskets. • Make or Miss – The quarter begins with only two players on the court for each team. When a team scores, a teammate may enter the game. If the team makes the

on both sides. I think it would be great for this city to have a football here. This could be huge. Miami is a great town for soccer, with a lot of players here and a lot of soccer-mad youngsters.” Beckham is still awaiting approval from MLS authorities.

A

s one nation suffered the loss of their greatest footballer, the sporting world rocked to the news Eusébio, aged 71 had died. The football heavyweight who scored 733 times in 745 professional games was laid to rest in his adopted Portugal. Chelsea's own Portuguese hero, Jose Mourinho was one of the first to pay tribute in stating: "I think he is immortal." Born in Mozambique, Eusébio embarked on a fairy tale journey that started from Africa’s grass roots to the very heart of top flight football. In doing so, Eusébio became the first African super star on European soil. The Benfica legend starred in no fewer than four European Cup

Finals, emphatically overcoming the might of Puskas’ Real Madrid in a memorable 5-3 win in 1962. Just four years later, Eusébio was to go down in sporting folklore; famously tallying nine goals in the 66’ World Cup. Befittingly, in the style and swagger of Portugal’s all-out attacking play, four of those goals came in game against North Korea, hosted at Everton’s Goodison Park. It seemed nothing could perturb the strength and prowess of ‘The European Pele’ as tributes flooded in across the footballing circuit. Those to pay their tributes were the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Sepp Blatter and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer, all too familiar with not only the sporting impact but the racial division Eusébio’s legacy broke.

Shanaze Reade urges women to get on their bikes

T

hree-times BMX world champion Shanaze Reade has urged women countrywide to get in gear and join the push to get one million females riding a bike. The campaign to boost the number of women who cycle was launched by British Cycling, as the governing body actively looks to address the gender imbalance in the sport. While British Cycling was proud to announce that over 100,000 women had already taken part in the initiative in six months of a seven year campaign, Chief Executive Ian Drake, said: “We know that British Cycling has a long journey ahead to change the culture of our sport but we are heading

in the right direction.” Reade, one of the most recognisable two-wheel champions, said: “For too long cycling has been seen as a sport for men. It’s fantastic to hear that over a 100,000 women have dusted off their bikes and got involved in British Cycling programmes across all disciplines so far.” She added: “The more women that cycle, the more their friends, sisters and mums will be inspired to give it a try – we’re starting to close that gender gap and I look forward to seeing even more women enjoy all that cycling has to offer.” Assessing the success achieved so far, Drake said the introduction of the 2014 women’s tour will give the campaign

further impetus: “In the months since we launched our strategy we’ve made some great progress and our plan to get one million more women cycling over the next seven years is firmly on track. We’ve got some fantastic headline figures to show that there are thousands of women who want to ride recreationally – a big win for our partnership with Sky, especially the fact that over a third of all Sky Ride event participants this year were women. 24,000 women have taken part in British Cycling sportives so far and our female member base has increased by 19 per cent since we launched our strategy.”
