Connecting Communities - Inspiring A New Generation
Inspiring the Future Generations of our Society
O
n 17 June Dame Judith Hackitt DBE FREng FCGI spoke to a meeting of the City and Guilds on: Back to the Future – reinventing the UK’s manufacturing industry “I am a Board member of the High Value Manufacturing. I am a council member and trustee of City and Guilds and I am involved with a variety of Universities in an advisory capacity – all
associated with Engineering courses. I have spent the last 2 days here at Imperial College on the strategic advisory board in Chem Eng. I am excited by the prospect of inspiring a new generation of engineers and technicians to become 21st century manufacturers here in GB. We are at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. A new era that builds and extends the impact of digitisation in new and unanticipated ways. The challenge we face is to ensure that this revolution creates benefits for the many rather than the few.
The First Industrial Revolution occurred when we shifted from our reliance on animals, human effort and biomass as primary sources of energy to the use of fossil fuels and the mechanical power this enabled. The second industrial revolution occurred between the end of the 19th century and the first 2 decades of the 20th century and brought major breakthroughs in the form of electricity distribution, communications, synthetic chemical processes and new forms of power generation.

Celebrating The Queen as Patron on her 90th Birthday
T
he chance to attend the Queens 90th Birthday Patrons lunch in the Mall, London, on 12 June was a unique opportunity for people across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth from the 600 plus charities and organisations of which she is Patron. It enabled them to come together to celebrate her birthday and to thank her for her unstinting devotion and tireless duty to us all. That chance was given to Keith Stokes-Smith, Chairman of the Birmingham Commonwealth Association (BCA) , and of course, he could just not say no. “The BCA is a branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society, the later a charity of which the Queen is Patron.” said Keith. “Our association was contacted by them and asked to put forward names to go in a lottery for a ticket to the event ; I was one of the successful ones.” “The weather was not ideal
as I, along with thousands of others, queued in the rain for some two hours before we arrived at our allocated gate. Fortunately, the organisers had planned for most things including the unpredictable English weather handing out what became much need cagoules to us as we arrived.” “Our spirits were not to be dented however. The immaculately designed and presented M & S hamper was quite something comprising Scottish smoked salmon mousse with hot and cold salmon, a fantastic sandwich selection, a Pembrokeshire chicken roulade salad, a mini piccalilli pork pie, cheese and biscuits, a raspberry royale, a duo of butterfly cakes, a bottle of Windsor apple juice and a can of Pimms all complete with cutlery, glassware, plates, napkins etc. It almost seemed a shame to open it but I did consuming just part of its content.” I joined the RCS allocated table alongside the Mall; some 16 or so people nearly all I believe from different parts of
the UK save a married couple from Australia.” “What an afternoon. Whilst I anticipated watching the parade and indeed seeing some members of the royal family travel down the Mall in open top motor vehicles, I had not anticipated that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s vehicle would stop some 6 metres away from me as I stood taking photographs alongside the rail.” “Clicking away as they moved closer to me greeting and chatting to guests on the way, I realised I was about to be as close as I would ever be to a future king; Why not I thought?” “I held my hand out, he shook it, we exchanged a few words, though what they were in that moment I cannot recall, and he moved on.” It truly was a day and an occasion to remember. A day when we can all be proud of our charities and organisations who do so much good for our people and for our monarch who gives many of them so much support.

Every race has its own Deities, its own Ancestors, language, culture, rites and rituals. Rituals can be seen as anything from acknowledging your shrine before you leave the house, putting on your lucky shoes or even your David
Beckham aftershave. Each race or religion has its own spiritual book; Christians the Bible, Muslims the Quran, the Hindu’s Bad-Vhata Gita/Vedas, Jewish people have the Torah, the Japanese the Mahikari, the Sikh’s have the Granth Sahib etc. We the African diaspora have the Makongo or the Makaba. Each race have their own Patriarchs or Religious Icons. Muslims venerate the prophet Muhammad, Judaism venerates Abraham, Lord Krishna from Hinduism, Jesus and Christianity, Buddha and Buddhism, Guru Nanak and Sikhism and for us of African descent, the Great Patriarch Kongo Nimi. Each race has its own culture which 'normally' would contribute to humanities earthly races, just like the different flowers of a garden that creates the total beauty of that garden. However, ultimately using another races languages, spiritual books, ancestors and cultures can only lead to mental domination, because the individual starts to self-assimilate the dominant culture of whom they are associated
opular radio DJ and fashion designer Noreen Khan officially opened Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s newest charity shop. The BBC Asian Network presenter cut the ribbon and welcomed the first shoppers through the doors of the new shop on Gooch Street, in Highgate as she was joined by staff, local residents and Hospice supporters to celebrate the opening of the charity’s 15th shop in the city. Following the grand opening, on June 2, shoppers enjoyed food and drink as they browsed for a bargain or two. Birmingham St Mary's Hospice Head of Trading, Ian Miller, said: “Opening our 15th charity shop is a great achievement. Our charity shops play an important part in raising funds for the Hospice and we hope our Highgate shop is a welcome addition to area.”
It costs around £8 million each year to run Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice which offers free care for over 1,200 terminally ill patients and their families in Birmingham and Sandwell. The shop welcomes donations of good quality items including clothing, shoes, toys, books, CDs and DVDs and household goods. All profits made from sales go to the Hospice. Noreen Khan said: “It was a pleasure opening the Highgate charity shop and it was great to see so many locals popping in to support. I’d encourage everyone to donate their clothes, shoes and bags to their local charity shops.” The Highgate shop, on Gooch Street, will also be supporting take-away food giants – and neighbours - Big John’s, official charity the ‘Anzal Begum Foundation’ by setting up a food bank instore.

illie Dee from West Bromwich has been nominated for the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Outstanding Younh Citizen award after the fearless 15-year-old scared a burglar from her home. After causing the crook to flee by screaming “get out of my house!” at the top of her voice, Millie checked her 12-year-old sister Amber was safe before calmly calling 999 and giving the ‘most detailed and precise description of an offender’ they had heard. Millie will find out if she has won the award at the PCC’s Outstanding Citizens ceremony on July 13 at The Rep in Birmingham. She was nominated by West Midlands Police. Her mum, Karen said: “It was a Saturday morning and I was out at work and their dad was walking the dog. There was a knock at the door and Millie noticed a strange car and a man she didn’t recognise outside – so she told Amber to leave it and they both stepped away from the door. “But he came back around 20 minutes later and, unbeknown to Millie and Amber, breaks in through the conservatory. The first thing Millie hears of it is the click of the living room door and then they are face-to-face on the stairs” West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: "The awards are our chance to say 'thank you' to those people who make the West Midlands a better place.” pioneering German Africanist of the early twentieth century, wrote a splendid summary of what the earlier travellers saw five hundred years ago: “When they arrived in the coast of Guinea and landed at Vaida (in West Africa) the captains were astonished to find streets well laid out, bordered on either side for several leagues by two rows of trees, for days they travelled through a country of magnificent fields, inhabited by men clad in richly coloured garments of their own weaving! Further south in the Kingdom of the Kongo, a swarming crowd dressed in ‘fine silks’ and velvet; great states well ordered, down to the most minute detail; powerful rulers, flourishing industries-civilised to the marrow of their bones. And the condition of the countries of the Eastern Coast-Mozambique, for example-was quite the same.” Africa`s rich and diverse…… history is something to celebrate and to feel a sense of pride about. Africa will always remain the cradle of civilization.

The economics of migration should be a celebratory occasion
A
mid claims and counterclaims about migratory trends, the central theme that is often ignored or left in abeyance, is that of the direct contribution migrants make to Britain. Their input encompasses a myriad of cultural, economic, educational, social and technological civility in modern times. Attempts at politicising the presence of immigrants without considering the background or the context, borders on the oversimplified version of ‘strangers in our midst’. The fact that few analysts or indeed commentators, have taken the time to explain the challenges and opportunities of the movement of people from one part of the world to another in this ‘day and age’, says much of the ethical deficit afflicting our sense of morality, let alone democratic values that we loudly proclaim [to be superior]. During the heyday of the British Empire, colonists came to the country in either a personal capacity or by invitation (from the British Crown). Those who arrived during the 17th and 20th centuries respectively, did so because of either personal choice or upon the invitation of the authorities, to supplement the labour pool. Traditionally, the unskilled (artisans) possessed innate entrepreneurial skills. These were evidenced by the number of small jobs they did to supplement meagre wages, never mind the questionable conditions of work and service they were subjected to. Promotional opportunities were slim or practically denied in those days and yet these ‘outsiders’ made an extraordinary input into the health of the nation. Colonists especially from Africa, the Caribbean and the Indian sub-continent (before Partition) toiled for decades in the textiles industry as designers, cutters, machinists as well as carrying out other functions associated with this sector. Despite average working conditions, women displayed great commitment, dedication and resilience. They contributed to the profitability of reputable high street clothing chains and enhanced the national coffers (‘Wool, Jute and Flax Industry Training Board, Report 31st March 1967). The sweat equity of these women is yet to be factored into the equation, let alone the distorted debates on immigration-migration concurrents today (shieproject.co.uk). Interestingly, others who worked in construction, roads and other industry segments, contributed equally, to the nation’s physical infrastructure and revitalised (what is known today as) the ‘built environment’. Nearly a century later, members of the second and third (and possibly the fourth) generation of migrant-settlers have fused levels of incredible public service with that of enterprise-related traditions. As citizens they represent a modicum of new economic and so-

cial values, not reflective of modern trajectories of citizenship vis-àvis subjects of the Crown. Today’s migrant generations are providing a unique stewardship to business and the professions, valuing billions to the economy. The incremental levels of educational attainments amongst minority ethnic communities including those who were once under-achieving, is rather clear for all to see. The growing number of activists and politicians occupying seats in the legislature – locally, regionally and nationally – defies belief and smacks at the cynicism of our national discourse on the rights of citizenship and the values we attach to this realm of duty and responsibility. Ideological differences and other challenges, have not impeded some from maintaining their standing as MPs for decades in safe seats –certainly this must ‘count for something’, politically speaking. As the tirade of debate rages on, the beneficiaries of migratory trends both in Britain and Europe, are the countries themselves. The challenges that this brings to nation-states, have a lot to do with the kind of arrangements in place to manage this historic trend. However, if we are to give credence to the labours of those who came to these shores to build/ rebuild the economy, we should at least consider the following options:• Dedicate a monument to honour the contribution of migrants from ex-colonies to business and the professions in the UK. • The national curriculum should include the unique contribution of former British colonists to the country. • A series of publications should be commissioned to pay homage to outstanding migrants who influenced changes to public services and cultural development in Britain. • All sections of the media should be encouraged to publish stories of first, second and third generation migrants’ contribution to British society. Only by giving the ‘real’ oxygen of publicity to this ‘hidden truth’, can Britain as a state, negate recurring ridicule, aberration and vituperation of its past.

A
horrifying horde including several bridges, Where’s Wally, Shaun of the Dead and life-like doctors, nurses, animals and patient gathered in Victoria Square on the 18th June to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity. Birmingham’s eighth annual Zombie Walk was led by Birming-
ham Children’s Hospital patient Rafe Walker along its 1.3 mile walk. Sixteen year old Rafe, who has been living with an inoperable brain tumour since he was eight years old, says the Zombie Walk is always the highlight of his fundraising calendar. The organisers are anticipating this year’s fundraising total will be close to £10,000, all of which
will go towards supporting the children and young people treated at the hospital. The first Zombie Walk took place in Birmingham in 2009 and was the brainchild of fundraiser Jamie Chapman. He said: “It’s been fantastic to watch the Zombie Walk grow over the last eight years. “The public’s reaction is always incredibly inspiring and seeing
thousands of zombies stumbling through the city centre is definitely not something to be missed.” Miranda Williams, Public Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “Since it started eight years ago the event has raised over £36,000 for our hospital, which has made a huge difference to the lives of our brave children and their families.

proposed charities. ‘Birmingham’s culinary scene is one of the richest in the world when it comes to curry establishments, and so to be awarded ‘Best Curry Restaurant’, out of so many great curry greats in Birmingham, is such an honour,” explained Pushkar’s Creative Director, Rai Singh. “As always, it’s not only a Pushkar team effort when we win these awards, but also the support of our loyal customers who continue to visit, praise and vote for us so we’d like to say a huge thank you them, as well as the judges for ultimately selecting Pushkar as the winner.’ Pushkar’s sister restaurant, Praza Edgbaston, was also shortlisted by public vote for the Best Curry Restaurant award.
Ninder Johal Chairman of The Business Growth Foundation says: “SMEs have recently been the forgotten voice of our economy. UK SMEs are 99% of all our businesses. They employ 15.6 million people. They are exceptionally important to the UK economy. But during the Referendum campaign the views of SMEs have rarely been covered in the media or discussed by politicians. "The campaign has been a period of anxiety for SMEs, many of whom have delayed or cancelled invest-
ment and growth plans due to their uncertainty about the outcome. "Now is the time to switch attention to SMEs to ensure they can smoothly and quickly transition away from uncertainty and get back on to a stability and growth agenda. "To help to achieve this The Business Growth Foundation is calling for a SME Task Force to be established Chaired by a leading figure in the SME economy and including a Secretary of State along with senior representatives of business membership organisations.
"Big corporations have the resources to deal with where we are today. "SMEs are not in this position and need more outside help. "The terms of reference of the Task Force will be to assess the implications for UK SMEs of the Referendum vote, including how to address our possible exit from the European Single Market. The Task Force will also fund measures that flow from its assessments, to assist SMEs to manage the post Referendum situation. "A major area of focus for the Task Force will be post Referendum access to finance to ensure SMEs get not just funding but high quality growth and investment advice when they want it and how they want it, so investment does not continue to stall. "The SME Task Force will be a critical investment for the long term benefit of our economy. "In these challenging times we cannot afford for SMEs to continue to be a forgotten voice.”

Nigeria and the Epidemic of Greed ike the British Psychologist, Oliver James put it in his book, Affluenza,I could conjecture that there is a correlation between the increasing access to satellite Television and the Epidemic of greed we are witnessing today in Nigeria . Just with the press of a button or the click of a switch we can instantly bring the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Mumbai, Shanghai and Dubai into the sitting rooms in Nigeria with the result that Television might be making a lot of Nigerians dissatisfied with their lives. Television fed Nigerians dream of owning the Clothes, Cars, Private Jets and mansions they see not only on satellite TV but also in glossy magazines. These might seem to make many Nigerians receptive to the Gospel of prosperity to the effect that consumerism has become the new religion. Various brands of goods are now to be worshipped as gods with the result that on a yearly basis, 140,000 Nigerians are on" pilgrimage" to the shopping "Cathedrals" of London. Scientific studies suggest that it is our interactions with our friends , family , community and meaningful work that make us happy not the size of our Bank accounts. .We have all heard the phrase"The rich also cry" but the typical capitalist would say "it is better to be rich and unhappy than to be poor and happy".
in sixties America refusing to go to war, changing his name and religion and sacrificing the very sport that made him world champion. What he did for black Americans, civil rights for people is as influential as what Gandhi did in India and what Mandela did in South Africa And this was a black boxer in his 20's His intellectual & oratory prowess was second to none, it made him the most articulate person in the world then- everything that Ali said went Viral, and that was in the
60's! In his legendary interviews with Michael Parkinson, he never held back on his beliefs as disturbing as they were for mainstream and the establishment - if Ali gave up boxing in his prime for a principle then prime time TV host wasn't going to stop him from holding back. He spoke of Islam, his faith, his equal rights as human being and he was not a slave and not a second class citizen, and he was not going to compromise He never compromised his
belief system, yesterday in hospital I was explaining to my father how Ali had turned down the Walk of Stars in LA so the name of his beloved Prophet would not be trodden on, many years later his is the only walk of star plaque that is on the wall and not on the pavement. By his own admission, Ultimately Ali’s greatest test was by his creator, when he fell ill from Parkinson's disease Ali lost the ability to give us his greatest skill of his amazing speeches, Yet how did Ali react- he gracefully for over 30 years to pardon the pun, took it on the chin, and his belief in the almighty help him cope with such a debilitating condition - Ali throughout all this time remained graceful and humble knowing that even the greatest are tested more than most. If Ali was boxing today he would be fighting the first billion dollar fight - such was his boxing skill and ability and get the world attention, If Ali was a footballer today he would be command a transfer of £500,000,000 If Ali had not fallen ill all those years ago he would have defeated Donald Trump to be President of the USA. Yet Muhammad Ali is in rightful place with his creator in peace with Almighty's other Prophets. - Raja Khan, Booom TV
HS2 Prep Updates
T
he programme for High Speed 2 (HS2) is facing cost and schedule pressures with options for extending the opening date for phase 1 now being considered and steps are being taken to bring cost estimates within available funding, according to a report by the National Audit Office.
The 2026 target opening date for phase 1 is at risk despite good progress with some major procurements. The Department for Transport (the Department) has asked HS2 Ltd to revisit the programme schedule in order to increase confidence for delivery from 60 % to 80%, without increasing costs. It has also asked HS2 Ltd to assess the impact of extending the timetable for opening Phase 1 by up to 12 months. Since the NAO reported in 2013, the Department and HS2 Ltd have made significant progress in preparing to deliver the programme. They have issued tender documents for major civil engineering contracts on phase 1, and plan to announce the preferred route for phase 2b later in 2016.

Themed; 'The Diaspora-Parish Council Partnership,' this the 5th Biennial Jamaican Diaspora Conference, held at the Birmingham City Council House, this event aimed to raise the profile of the Poor Relief and Infirmary services in each of Jamaica's thirteen parish councils, for Diaspora support; make arrangement for the appointment of a Diaspora Officer in each parish to facilitate Jamaicans

The event was led and facilitated by event Vice Chair Georgina Mendez (Managing Director of Platinum Employment Advice and Training Ltd.) plus Jamaica Deputy High Commissioner for the UK, Deirdre Mills, Honorary Consul Wade Lyn (owner of Island Delights patties), Jamaica Diaspora UK Chair, Ben Cunningham and Birmingham Lord Mayor Carl Rice. Congratulations must go out to Birmingham City Council for the respect given to allow the use of the council chambers to hold the conference talks. The conference was a set of formal workshop-style discussions significant to Jamaicans in the UK, such as the role of the recently created all-party lobby group of British MPs - led by Dawn Butler MP - to represent the interests of Jamaica and Ja-
maicans in Britain; the recent announcement and proposal by the Government of Jamaica to begin holding consultations about the feasibility of ex-pats, who live abroad, participating in elections in Jamaica; and what re-thinking for improvements can be made to the present operational framework of the Diaspora Advisory Board to which three persons is sent to represent problems we have which can only be solved in Jamaica. A vitally important event for the Jamaican Diaspora it fell low – by way of grand awareness – but high in getting the message across. Greater awareness of the day-long event was needed for the delivery to reach the mass audience it was aimed at. Hopefully, the message can reach its intended grand scale through those who attended.

epresenting some of the very best of talent from around the world, artists from a variety of countries throughout the British Commonwealth were on stage at the Birmingham Town Hall, to pay their own homage to Her Majesty The Queen at a gala event, as part of the nation’s celebration for her 90th birthday. In the presence of leading dignitaries, including; Colonel George Marsh TD, Vice Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Lord Bill Morris of Handsworth, OJ, DL the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Councillor Carl Rice, Dr. Mashuq Ally, Keith Stokes-Smith, Chair of the Birmingham Commonwealth Association, Peter Waite of KG Miles Opticians, Wade Lyn Honorary Consul to Jamaica, and The Phoenix Newspaper Founder/ Managing Editor Marcia McLaughlin, this was a fitting end to a month which marked 63 years on the throne for Queen Elizabeth II. Hosted by TV personality, Gennelle Aldred, performers like; the Tewahedo Drummers, Aston Performing Arts Group, Haripa Dance Group, the Town Hall Gospel Choir, award-winning Asian musician, Azer Hussain Qawwal, and the Brothers United In Christ singing outfit lit up memorable night of performances in honour of a Head of State who
has reigned so supreme for so long. Jamaican-born world-renowned tenor soloist, Steve Higgins, as the headline act, performed his arias and traditional Jamaican folk songs. But it was celebrated ballerina Xolisweh who lifted what was a sparse arena on such a special night with her stunning performance to Feeling Good as she flew across the stage captivating the audience. Organised by the Association of Jamaican Nationals (Birmingham) UK, in collaboration with the Birmingham Commonwealth Association, supported by Birmingham City Council and produced by JD Douglas; the Commonwealth Cultural Extravaganza did their very best to highlight the best of diversity in the city, falling ironically, a day after Britain voted to leave the unity of the European Union. “I’m sad at the turn-out,” said AJN Chair Beverly Lindsay OBE OD DL. “But it’s fitting that this Commonwealth Cultural Extravaganza is honoring Her Majesty, the longest serving monarch. This was the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to her achievements as Head of the Commonwealth.” Although the turnout was not to expectations, the calibre and sophistication of the event was on that should not have been missed.

a d h u r a Kulkarni, a Birmingham City University fashion student has come up with some rather futuristic handbag designs, catching the eye of not just colleagues and staff at BCU, but even the New York Independent Handbag Designer Awards. Setting her sights on revolutionising the world with these handbag designs, the Fashion Design student at the University’s School of Fashion and Textiles says that social media is to blame for a growing lack of real face-to-face human interaction. “In the 21st century where people are extremely tech savvy, some people are so engrossed in social media that they rarely talk to others verbally. I feel that my concept could revolutionise the world.” Hailing from Nashik,in the northwest Indian region of Maharashtra, Madhura created this LED Emoji-inspired handbag which she hopes will get people talking. “I wanted to create something futuristic and out of the world which depicts the modern era. Si-fi, Robots, Cyborgs, Humanoids, in short The Future inspires me the most.” “The reason is, you never know what is going to happen

Her work forms part of Birmingham City University’s Inspired Festival, a two-week celebration of creative talent and graduating students about to launch their careers. Madhura’s design has already caught international attention, as she was recently named as a finalist in the 2016 New York Independent Handbag Designer Awards, which was a surprise, “It was so unexpected! But when I got the result i was overwhelmed, I was really happy. It was an indication to me that YES! I am on the right track of my career. It was no doubt a proud moment for me.” The future looks bright for Madhura, “I can’t disclose all the ideas, but I can definitely say some I have already started working on something futuristic and avant garde which will soon be featured on my brand website MADHECII.”

ork to construct what is thought to be the world’s first classroom researched, planned and designed entirely by students is underway in Birmingham, and it’s not just a standard classroom – it’s a stateof-the-art science lab. King Edward VI Camp Hill School Year 11 pupils Simi Bhamra, Phoebe Thomas, Kate Pham and Chloe Taylor will soon be able to tour the lab they designed for mixed sciences. The team won a nationwide competition for students to design a school science lab when they submitted a 52 page planning document that organisers Innova Design Solutions said was one of the most detailed proposals they’d ever seen. Innova has now begun installing the futuristic science lab which includes an innovative new horseshoe seating layout conceived as part of the girls’ design. Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Thomas, the team’s project manager said: “Winning the competition was one thing, but when we found out that the school was going to turn our design
l The Lab of the Future team at King Edward VI Camp Hill School into a fully functioning classroom, it was incredible – and really quite scary! “Obviously at the moment, we’re all studying towards our GCSEs and have busy exam timetables so unfortunately we’re on teacher’s orders to stay away until the lab is finished. We’re all incredibly excited to see the finished lab for ourselves and can’t wait to get in there once work completes.” Assistant Headteacher Dr Janet Rose, who teaches Chemistry said: “Science labs are usually planned by designers with a varying degree of input from teachers – so it’s great to think of pupils designing their own classroom and I’m really pleased that the designs and ideas of these talented pupils will now feature in a real lab! “As a school we were very im-
pressed by the girls’ designs so we just had to make the lab a reality. By doing this we are getting a classroom that will work for everybody that uses it – teachers and pupils – like nothing before it. From my point of view I can’t wait to get in there and teach some classes.” The installation will see Innova converting a former physics lab that contained limited services into a fully functional mixed sciences lab that will be used primarily for chemistry. Melanie Laing, director, Innova Design Solutions concludes: “When we launched the competition last year, it was not envisaged that the winning lab would actually be built as the prize we offered was for £20,000 of lab furniture. It speaks volumes about the quality of the entry that the school was adamant they needed to fund its completion.”

The third industrial revolution began in the 1950s with the development of digital systems, rapid advances in computing power and communications which have enabled new ways of generating, processing and sharing information. The third industrial revolution is not yet over but the fourth has already started and the two run in parallel. The fourth is about the advent of cyber physical systems that create entirely new opportunities for people and for machines. The capabilities build on the technologies of the third industrial revolution but this next “wave” represents entirely new ways of embedding technology within societies,

industry and even in our own bodies. The combination of the third and fourth industrial revolutions are making possible products and services which increase the efficiency and enjoyability of owur lives, while also reducing costs. Organising transport, booking restaurants, buying goods, making payments, listening to music, reading books are all available to us all instantly – and there is much more to come including for example personalised medicines and autonomous vehicles. But what does all this mean for the world of manufacturing and for the skills we need in the Engineers and technicians of today and in the future? The High Value Manufac-
turing Catapult works with business to bridge that gap between research and commercialisation. The areas of specialisation range from process innovations – biologics and printable electronics – metal forming, composite new materials, battery technologies, to nuclear advanced manufacturing. There are of course a number of other fundamentals which we need to have in place if we are to deliver this renaissance in UK manufacturing. We need to know that we are going to have: • Affordable and secure energy in both the medium and long term • Significant investment in transport infrastructure • Apprenticeship levy to be

used well to deliver quality apprentices The UK has fallen behind many other parts of the world in inspiring young people – especially girls - to study science in schools and go on to become scientists and engineers. Different initiatives have been fragmented and this disunited effort only succeeds in creating a cacophony of noise, which confuses teachers, parents and students. Children mature at different rates and that some will be better suited to an academic path, whilst others will be better following a vocational route; despite the fact that those of us who have worked in industry know that we all work together in multidisciplinary teams to deliver results in the real world; our own professional engineering institutions continue to make progression much more difficult for those who have not followed a conventional path and they continue to maintain silos around each discipline. This has to change and it has to change soon. This country requires a strong, thriving manufacturing industry taking a key role in delivering the fourth industrial revolution for the future benefit of us all.

Drake and Rihanna getting up close and personal?

ith the rebooted Ghostbusters movie coming out next month, people are already getting their oar in with their views on the film, despite no one outside of Sony actually having seen it yet! There are a number of issues people have of the film, including the stereotyping of the only woman of colour in the group not being a scientist, but a seemingly inept transit worker. While the original cast got together with their new counterparts recently on TV and appeared to give their support and blessing, it remains to be seen how the public react once it’s out.
rake joined Rihanna onstage in Manchester and got tongues wagging with his performance of ‘Work’ with his ex. We all know that there is a lot of sexual chemistry between the two, but even by their usual onstage flirtatious actions, that nights performance was notable if for nothing more than Drake actually kissing Rihanna’s neck mid song. With rumours surrounding the couple rife, it does beg the question if there is any truth to them now? Drake even got a bit soppy on the mic following the song, telling the crowd “You’ve gotta make some noise for the most beautiful talented woman I’ve ever seen in my life...”

down? Well a trial is happening in a series of shopping centres, covering up the changing room mirrors in a bid to make the nation less body conscious, especially with summer approaching and bikini season making women even more body conscious than usual Occuring as new insights reveal
that over 70% of British women don’t feel confident about buying a new outfit after they’ve tried it on in front of the changing room mirror. Birmingham’s Bullring, Bristol Cabot Circus and Croydon Centrale have committed to covering their mirrors in an attempt to make their changing rooms a more comfortable place for women to shop. Maggie Foggett, Marketing Manager of Bullring, said: "One of the main reasons people come to our shopping centres is to buy clothes,
whether that be a brand new wardrobe or a one off item for a special occasion.” “We want to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and confident when trying on clothes, so that's why we're trialing banning the mirrors.” “We hope that women in particular will try something on and feel gorgeous and glamorous! Hopefully this will be a success and we can roll it out across our shopping centres for the summer"

pologies yet again as yes I only went and missed my last column, is it just me or is the time just absolutely flying by. Heading into July already - yep thats half way through 2016 and it only seems like yesterday that I was wishing you all a happy new year haha. On a serious note though, I was sitting at home yesterday watching the news, and yet again another couple have been found guilty of killing their child - yes KILLING THEIR CHILD. This time an innocent 2 year old boy, who was tortured to the extent that he had over 200 injuries on his little body. Trying to get herself out of trouble, the poor excuse of a human being that is being called his mother, then tried to blame one of her other children for hurting the young boy. Unfortunately this has to be the fourth case this year, that I know
of where a parent has been sent to prison for killing their child. Where a system that has been set up to protect these children has once again failed. So who’s really responsible for failing these kids. Is it the parents, is it the schools, is it the social services departments. On each occassion, each child was known to child services - on yesterdays report it was said that the young boy just slipped through the net - is this acceptable - errr NO ITS NOT. When I had my 2 kids, I must admit neither was planned but the second they were born, I felt the most unconditional love and I knew from that moment on that I would love them more than I could love anything and protect them forever to the best of my ability. Our kids don’t choose to be born, we as parents make that decision. So what could possibly make someone want to harm
something so small, something that they made and should protect no matter what. I really don’t think we will ever find out. Our services are constantly being cut, underfunded and under constant scrutiny - surely its not rocket science to prioritise what’s important and what needs working on - is it worth spending a few extra quid on hiring more social workers, funding resources that are needed in order to prevent any more innocent kids losing their lives at the hands of so called parents. WELL I THINK IT IS. So that’s it for now guys - so until next month (when we may finally see something that resembles a summer), take care and see you all soon. Love Dee x x x

egendary Grammy award winning singer/ songwriter/producer Barry Gibb has signed with Columbia Records/RCA and will release his first album with the label titled, In The Now, in the autumn of 2016. The surviving member of one of music’s most successful and revered bands, the Bee Gees, (formed with his brothers Robin and Maurice), has kept In The Now a family affair, writing all the songs with his sons Stephen and Ashley. Produced by Barry and co-producer John Merchant, the album is only the second solo effort of Gibb’s career and his first album of all new material since the Bee Gees final studio album in 2001. The 12-track album was recorded in Miami with the same gathering of accomplished musicians Barry assembled for his acclaimed 2014 solo tour.

n 2014, when Reggae Legend David Rodigan joined forces with Chase & Status, Shy FX and MC Rage to form the soundsystem Rebel Sound and consequently went on to win the Red Bull Culture Clash, there was a massive amount of coverage in the media and quite rightly so, as Rodigan is one of the most loved Reggae DJ’s. This years event saw a great night, where one of the largest events in current popular urban music culture history took place at London’s O2 Arena. Despite the expectations of most of the commentators and fans in the run up to the night, the heavily Caribbean influenced Mixpak Sound, a musical collection of artists comprising of some of the biggest names in the business, including Popcaan, Spire, Kranium, Tony Matterhorn, and the UK connection of the group, Birmingham’s own self confessed Brumaican, the one and only multi-talented Serocee. keynote speaker, former Prime Minister of Jamaica the Honourable PJ Patterson-with other speakers including, Group CEO of GraceKennedy Limited, Don Wehby, Western Union Regional Vice President in the Caribbean, Sean Mason, Michelle Allen, Chief Executive Officer of GraceKennedy Money Services and Birmingham City Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Ian Ward. Many of the city’s leading lights,

as with the ‘Informal Breakfast’ meeting, were present, mingling with regular diners to hear, for themselves the collaborative development of the two companies in particular, and the Caribbean in general. Cllr. Ward, full of praise for the link between Birmingham and Jamaica, was “delighted to be here and am full of praise for the strong links between us two.” “Opportunities exist for growing links as the Caribbean is a significant community here in the city.” Highlighting the success of the Sted Wallen-led Birmingham Olympic Legacy Tour in Jamaica, he said that it is the city’s main call to build more links with the Caribbean and develop more initiatives too – like building a statue for city legend, Jamaican-born jazz saxophonist, Andy Hamilton, to hopefully be erected in the centre of town, and continue the strong links already built on the back of hosting the Jamaican Track and Field team in the city for the 2012 Olympics.

“We want to continue – and grow – our links with Jamaica.” With GraceKennedy and Western Union creating jobs at home and abroad, it was great to hear what the Deputy Leader had to say and was proud to emphasize the work they are doing, not only establishing the growth of their core business, but the expansion of the businesses and organizations they support and/or sponsor, including; Jamaica Basic School Foundation, the Angel Foundation in St. Ann’s Bay, plus Erma’s Hospital Fund and the Sturridge Foundation which are both based here in the UK. “I am always especially proud and thrilled to be with my people abroad,” said very special keynote speaker, Mr. Patterson, who after 14 years is Jamaica’s longest ever serving prime minister. “We owe a debt of gratitude to Western Union and GraceKennedy in bringing the Caribbean together as one big family,” he said. “The spirit of our nation is essential for us to move forward, especially in partnerships like this one.” “We need to strive to make Jamaica a better place to visit, work or play.” Mr. Patterson went on to highlight the anomaly that is ‘British Citizenship,’ especially when it affects those who have been here for years. “Anti-migrant retrace by govern-
ments is tantamount to racism,” he said. “We need to hold on to our elite in Jamaica and beware of the ‘Ben Johnson’ syndrome.” “That is, when he was winning, he was ’Canadian,’ but when he was losing he was always ‘Jamaican.’” “As long as I have breath in my body, I am going to defend my own. What we need to do is increase Jamaica’s involvement in world politics and have more in the corridors of power. We need to maintain and stimulate Jamaica’s remittance.” “The Caribbean at large love Jamaican stuff so we need to expand on ‘Brand Jamaica.’ GraceKennedy and Western Union are, together, are making a great difference – So can you.” “We have to be the authors of our own destination. We have to expand on the borderless community at large.” With HSBC moving one of its headquarters from London to Birmingham, John Lewis headlining the recent opening of Grand Central, HS2 making big plans in the city, and Birmingham International Airport ever increasing its range of direct flights to destinations all over the world, GraceKennedy and Western Union have chosen the perfect time to hear from the residents of Birmingham, as the city is set to embrace new initiatives and exciting concepts.

raceKennedy and Western Union staged their fifth annual free Town Hall series from June 1 June 9, 2016 in Atlanta in the U.S.A; Birmingham and London in the United Kingdom (U.K.) under the theme, "The Caribbean Diaspora Borderless Possibilities”. The series of events was part of GraceKennedy’s and Western Union’s ongoing thrust to positively impact the communities they serve. The GraceKennedy Group is one of the Caribbean’s largest and most dynamic Food and Finance corporate entities. The company started in Jamaica in 1922 and now comprises of companies in the Caribbean, North and Central America, The United Kingdom and Africa. GraceKennedy’s vision is: To be a Global Consumer Group delivering long term consumer and shareholder value, through brand building and innovative solutions in food and financial services, provided by highly skilled and motivated people. The keynote speakers for the series were former Prime Ministers of Jamaica the Honourable Orette Bruce Golding in Atlanta, while the Most Honourable P.J. Patterson spoke in the
U.K. Other speakers include Don Wehby, Group Chief Executive Officer of GraceKennedy Ltd and Sean Mason, Vice President and General Manager for Western Union, Caribbean. Michelle Allen, Chief Executive Officer of GraceKennedy Money Services said “These fora are very important to us as they provide an excellent opportunity to engage the Caribbean Diaspora - not just to network with our customers and get their feedback but also importantly, to encourage their participation in the discussion about issues that are critical to their home countries. Their contribution is very valuable as we explore ways to continue the development and promotion of the Caribbean while improving the quality of lives for those who live within the region.” At the event In London, Ansul Wong spoke passionately about GraceKennedy supporting settled communities to achieve their full potential. Ansul raised critical challenges and posed questions such as: • What does it mean to be part of a Caribbean Diaspora? • How can we build unity? • What are we doing to build community cohesion? • What does it mean to be a British and Caribbean citizen at he same time? Don Wehby, reiterated the vision of GraceKennedy as a global consumer group. He drew reference to Grace Foods UK that is one of UK’s most
progressive food companies, supplying market-leading range of specialty and world food brands to the retail, wholesale and food services sectors throughout the UK and Europe. Don demonstrated how collaboration with Western Union has brought added value to farmers in Jamaica. Farmers have confirmed finance and that enable them to send their children to school; every child deserves a good education. In addition, peppers are now earning foreign exchange. Sean Mason spoke on the 26 years of partnership with GraceKennedy during which time they have pioneered moving money in every corner of the globe. There is currently a Western Union App in the UK The Former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Percival James Patterson rang home the importance of the democratic process and for Jamaica’s 2030 Vision; to be the country of choice and Jamaica being a land without borders. P J Patterson reminded the audience of the history of the Windrush experience, and stated that now Britain is recruiting the Caribbean’s teachers and scientists. He commented that leadership is required at community level and that there is a need for political understanding and that we need to remain united and strong. He ended his speech with the call to remain authors of our own destiny and with the rousing Marcus Garvey quote to: Awake the consciousness that lies in all of us.

anthemic “Dust & Bones”, the EP also contains two new originals – “Place Isn’t Lost” and “Bottled Time” – alongside a cover of Cambridge legends Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”. Lonely The Brave’s debut, “The Day’s War”, was an album both critically acclaimed
and adored by fans, receiving the full 5K’s in a lead Kerrang! review and a similarly glowing two-page lead in Rock Sound. What set Lonely The Brave apart from their peers was how they couldn’t be hemmed into that rock world alone while gaining prestigious support slots with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and band favourite Deftones. wo decades after the alien invasion of 1996, the Earth has become an unrecognisable haven of peace and unity. The nations of Earth have united as one in order to protect the world from future invasions. By using recovered alien technology, they have built an impenetrable inter-galactic defence system should the extra-terrestrial menace return. Unfortunately, on the eve of Independence Day, a 3000-milewide mothership appears and attacks with unprecedented force, the world’s leading scientists and most courageous fighter-pilots must spring in to action to save the planet from a seemingly invincible enemy. With films like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and White House Down under his belt, Director Roland Emmerich has separated himself from the pack when it comes to big, loud, blockbuster cinema.
The Phoenix – July 2016
wORDS by antony brown
This is a filmmaker most concerned with entertaining people and that's a great thing. We need some mindless escapism to take us away from the mundanity of our day to day lives every now and then and Emmerich is more than willing to oblige. If nothing else, the vast majority of his movies are entertaining and easy to watch. You never have to put too much thought in to what's happening and Independence Day: Resurgence is yet another entry in what has become Emmerich's wheelhouse - a big, loud and silly movie that's easy to watch and nothing more. As he always does, Emmerich does a great job in handling the action, putting us right there amidst the aerial dog-fights and destruction, but it is the writing that ultimately drags Resurgence down because nobody seems sure of what they want the sequel to be - an action-packed blockbuster, a buddy-comedy, a sci-fi thriller or something else entirely.
independence day: resurgence
The tone of the movie is handled so haphazardly that the audience never really knows how to feel. Perhaps the best example is the moment thousands of people are running through the streets, screaming as buildings collapse around them and crush them under the debris. This is a scene where countless people die, yet seconds later (literally SECONDS) Jeff Goldblum
and Liam Hemsworth are cracking jokes and dropping one-liners like they're going out of fashion, as if they didn't just witness the complete decimation of an entire city and it has a jarring effect on the audience. The original Independence Day was high on humour, but when things got serious and people started dying, they eased off the jokes, but it's an entirely different matter in Resurgence. The jokes come thick and fast, no matter what's happening, but when you're dealing with a movie with global destruction on this scale, some of the humour simply seems ill-advised and out of place. However, when they aren’t trying to confuse you with bizarre tonal shifts, they are delivering some huge, bombastic action set pieces that never fail to entertain. The ensemble cast is comprised
of returning cast members from the original Independence Day and fresh new faces, all of whom are perfectly aware of how silly everything is, but they're all game, which makes the movie much easier to watch. None of the performers are taking anything too seriously and they do their best with the material they're given. Of the new cast members, Travis Tope steals many of the scenes he's in. The bumbling side-kick to Liam Hemsworth's Jake Morrison is always fun to watch and he brings his A-game when it comes to comedic timing. While the cast do their best, they never gel quite as well as the cast of the original did. Perhaps the film’s biggest issue is the sheer scale of the thing. As with most blockbuster sequels, the filmmakers seem to be under the
belief that the only way they can deliver a better movie is by making a bigger movie, which isn’t always the case. Independence Day: Resurgence is constantly flicking between the United States of America, Africa, London and even the Moon. No, seriously. There is a colonised moon base in this movie. The problem with doing this is that there are countless characters in each location and you never really get to spend too much time with any of them, meaning you spend two hours watching hundreds of characters you don’t really care much for. Aside from returning characters whom we already have an affinity towards because of the first movie, none of the new characters are able to emerge from the pack and make a lasting impression. Independence Day: Resurgence is a pretty pointless sequel, but it isn’t necessarily a bad one…it’s just not particularly good either. Back in 1996, Independence Day felt new and exciting. Audiences had never really seen global destruction on that scale before and with its ensemble cast and iconic moments, it quickly burrowed it’s way in to the hearts of millions. Unfortunately, Resurgence falls short of recapturing that same magic. Its everything the original is; big, loud, funny and visually spectacular, but there’s also an unshakeable feeling that there’s just something missing, even if you can’t quite pinpoint what it is. Even so, Independence Day: Resurgence remains a harmless and undeniably entertaining flick, and there’s nothing really wrong with that…is there? Also, there is a third instalment already in development, so at least we know we don’t have to wait twenty years for the next sequel.

n my last column I explored leadership excellence through the lens of empowering communication. In this month’s column communication is followed up from the perspective of staff engagement. In this column May 2016 the focus was on integrity. I will go one step further to link staff engagement with integrity, communication and trust. People desire transparency, openness and honesty from their leaders. The issue of trust can make or break your organisation. A survey by The American Psychological Association shows that one in four workers say that they not trust their employer, and only about half believe that their employer is open and honest with them. What might be the result if the culture within your organisation is full of fear, stress and confusion? What might you do to move your organisation from a culture of fear to a culture of trust? “To win in the marketplace you mist first win in the workplace” - Doug Conant, CEO of Campbell’s Soup Invest some of your time to think about the following questions: • Is your staff engaged? • Is the productivity within your organisation low? • To what extent is there

recognition, planning and prioritisation of communication in relation to the contribution of your staff? Are you expressing your recognition of your staff’s valuable contribution? Are you aware of the needs of your employees? How much do your staff know about what is important to you? Do you know what is important to individual staff members and teams? Are you building a solid foundation from where staff engagement can thrive?
Why is staff engagement important?
Engagement is directly related to trust. One of the most insightful ways to assess the engagement of your staff is to carry out a staff engagement survey at least once per year and take action on the results. It is important that you as a leader give even more attention to staff engagement. Gallup’s extensive research show that staff engagement is strongly connected to business outcomes that are essential to your organisation’s financial success, such as productivity, profitability and
customer engagement. Engaged staff drive the innovation, growth and revenue that is needed by your organisation. Staff engagement starts at the top of the organisation, where the culture of the organisation is formed. From a psychological point of view it can be argued that disengaged staff are more likely to leave your organisation. Staff replacement can be costly, so take staff engagement seriously. Periodically, from your leadership perspective, ask yourself: Am I likely to enable the full potential of my staff without effective engagement?
So how do you take staff engagement to the next level? Here follows seven action points:
1. Get to know the reality.
Find out how engaged is your staff by a staff engagement survey. If the survey shows that your staff do not feel engaged, talk to individuals, ask for ideas. • Explore what is working well? • What is not working? • What needs to change? • What support and what resources are needed? Understand why people feel the way they do. Become aware of the bottom-line and know that
engagement = happiness = productivity.
2. Make connection a priority
In your leadership, when you fail to truly connect with the people you lead, you are likely to create a workforce that only comes to work for the pay. The first step in accomplishing connection is to demonstrate that you really care. No one cares until someone cares; be that one! - Ken Poirot
3. Invest in a staff engagement programme
Business profitability and productivity is contingent on staff engagement. A happy member of staff will put in the extra effort and stay with your organisation during the testing times and during the highs and lows.
4. Pay attention to how you speak with people
Are you using words and metaphors that resonate with what your staff care about? Are there shared values?
5. Enable staff to play to their strengths
Gallup research shows us that a key engagement driver is the ability for individuals to play to their strengths every day. Within your role as a leader, a sure way to enable staff to play to their strengths, is to allow staff members the opportunity to define one of their strengths to which they are not playing and enable staff members with the freedom to play to that strength within their role and day to day functions. You may even take this further and track and celebrate staff members’ success.
6. Discuss the goals of your staff with them
It is all too easy to get focused on sales and bottom line that you may tend to forget that each person has a different reason for
doing what they do. Meet with your staff and find out what they are working towards – what are their goals? What is their purpose for being in your organisation? What is driving them – sending a child to college? Paying off the mortgage? What is their why? Help your staff to define their purpose and become a driving force to help them to succeed.
7. Lead a culture with clear purpose
A lack of engagement stems from lack of connection to identity -(organisational and cultural) – as well as purpose. It is important for you as a leader to create a culture where your staff feel the reward of contributing to your organisation. I have found that when there is a predominant lack of engagement within an organisation, there is often a lack of clarity on the purpose of the organisation. How are you articulating the purpose of your organisation? Is everyone aligned with that purpose? Is that purpose inherent in the strategic objectives of the organisation? On other words a compass in the business? Engage with your staff – A collective consciousness is very important to your business and it can truly make the difference to how your business functions. Remember this take away quote A group of people get together and exist as an institution we call a company so they are able to accomplish something collectively that they could not accomplish separately – they make contribution to society, a phrase which sounds trite but is fundamental. - David Packard, Co-founder of Hewlett-Packard

COMMUNITY IFTAAR
The Phoenix – July 2016
Community ga celebrate Comm B i r m i n g h a m ’s diversity was in full show at Highfield Hall, in Hall Green; all coming together to mark the end of a fast of this year’s Ramadan – with a focus of bringing different communities under one roof to experience “Community Iftaar 2016”. Under a large marquee, in the Hall’s gardens, in the presence of local dignitaries, it was an opportunity to create new neigh-
bourhoods and celebrate people’s differences. Local Councillor, Kerry Jenkins, heaped praise on the efforts made to unite the people of Hall Green, saying; ''Hall Green is very multicultural and this was a fantastic opportunity to show communities coming together to show strength in unity.'' Young Peoples Champion, Cllr. Jenkins, went on; ''This multi-faith coming-together is exactly what I’m promoting in
my role as I too am trying to build a rich diversity in Birmingham. This was Birmingham in its true colours.'' In the presence of three of Birmingham’s welcomed Syrian refugees, a packed marquee witnessed the breaking of fast as food was laid for a feast, by people from all corners of a city which – despite showing its ‘colours’ in the recent EU Referendum – really is multicultural at its very best.

athers as one to munity Iftaar One of the refugees, Maryum, 13, heaped praise on Birmingham and its people, saying; ''I had a very difficult life in Syria – then Jordan – but am grateful for the opportunity to make friends here and get an education. I am eternally grateful to Birmingham for giving me a chance to live.'’ Exposed to the heavy rain-fall of early June, a rain-sodden marquee was becoming overwhelmed by water, but that didn’t
dampen the spirits of all who attended. Martin Stephenson, Vicar of the nearby Anglican St. Peters Church, said of this unique experience; ''We have a gift, in this city, of making multi-faith new friends and celebrating our differences. At St. Peters, we pray Christian and Muslim prayers - and are open to discussions on our differences.'' “This experience brings
people together like nowhere else and I am proud to be a part of it.'’ With delicious food supplied by Imran Restaurant on Ladypool Road, the community broke the fast together in harmony, and all sat down to eat together. This was the second of its kind, at Highfield Hall, and plans are already afoot to make next year even bigger and more diverse.

igerian Christian youth proclaiming Christ at their youthful time or age, it was a moment of joy and praises in Kogi State Nigeria West Africa, precisely Ajaokuta at the ASCL Staff comprehensive secondary school 1 auditorium as Mr. John Kingsley Okheaode and his gospel band group made a heavy event in bringing down the presence of God through worship and praises. The auditorium was filled to capacity with lots of invited guests. Mr. John Kingsley Okheaode who is from Edo State, Nigeria and Chief Executive of Royal Treat Industrial Catering Services Limited and CEO of Jheavens integrated Services Limited, is the music arm of his career. John Heavens stated “This event is my love to worship God with my God given talent and financial resources.” “My musical group is purely gospel music which will move the Almighty God to move and dance in heaven as souls are won for Him.” He is married to Mrs. Antonia John Okheaode and blessed with two wonderful children. “For one to decide for a project like this, one must have a focus, and my focus is all about soul winning not earthly entertainment. “ It is a commandment God has given meant I’m not out to make money but rather use the wealth God has freely given in evangelizing for Him through music. So
don’t call us entertainers,” he said “It is our faith and belief in God that miracles such as healing, deliverance and abundant blessing take place. God respects worship and adoration. This we strive to give to Him.” “Humbly, I have been in music since I grew to know myself and have a passion for it, So far I have produced two albums in my local dialect.” “This is the first one produced in English that is meant to appeal to international communities. We look forward to do more. We have done enough of local champion.” If you’re wondering what the future holds for John Heavens, he beamed “We are looking forward to worship crusade that will draw men to God with healing and transformation, have international exposure and draw men to God on an international large scale level both here and abroad.” “We are believing God to have a large auditorium where there will be total devotion to praise and worship music only. He attributed some of his major challenges to be inadequate time allotment when called to do song ministration in an outreach gathering, enough time is not allotted to proper song worship.” “While the audience are looking forward to praising God, organizers usually cut it short because they are usually in a hurry to bring the preacher to the stage. In many cases the audience may not be too satisfied because they expect that through the song they can be
better (1Samuel 16:23) Entertainment brings you into excitement. Experience gives you freedom (2Cor3:17) Entertainment makes you feel good, Experience makes you become good. Two sets of people are ordained to minister God's word. They are WORD MINISTERS AND SONG MINISTERS. A Word minister preaches the word of God while A Song minister sings the word of God (Hebrew 4:12) The same thing with different approaches. The major thing is that the word of God has the capacity to recreate destinies. A Song minister is doing what a word minister does but does it sweeter. A Song minister is a word minister with rhythm and with melody, A Word minister grows your faith and connects it to heaven, A Song minister brings heaven to you. (Ps 22:3). A word minister will speak to the mountain to move, A song minister sings to God to move. When God moves, everything moves. (Ps 22:3). A Word minister builds your faith to connect to heaven, A Song minister gives you the opportunity to use your mustard seed, faith, to get what you want.(Luke 17:6) The amiable Mrs. John Heavens is also a member of the singing ministry Benny Hinn has one of the biggest healing ministries and some of the greatest healings recorded while he did the job of a song minister; singing the word of God instead of preaching the Word. Word ministers have been enjoying more impact because they respect the word of God therefore He responds to them. Pastor Stanley went further to challenge Gospel song writers, makers and song producers to create songs that will carry the power that God has put in His word. He emphatically stressed that JHeavens ministry is a fresh birth of a song ministry, and was glad to announce to the world that JHeavens ministry didn't just make a song but made a solution. God's word is a solution to every challenge of life (Matt 28:11). Remember John Heavens is singing the word of God. He said that
Elisha in 2 kings 3:15-18 gives us a picture of what songs can do. Elisha called on a minstrel to sing him into the presence of God to get absolution for the three Kings. Let me ask this question; why did Elisha who performed 28 miracles now needed a minstrel on this particular one? The answer is in verses 13 and 14. Elisha was angry with the king of Israel and had difficulty getting to God's presence (Ps100:4). Elisha needed a minstrel to clear the cloud of anger so that he could connect and get solutions (Ps 16:11). Pastor Stanley strongly believe that this album 'MY TESTIMONY ‘is the minstrel that will erase the cloud thereby connecting men to God for their testimonies. (1Sam16:16) God's presence car-

ries the solution of all men (Ps 145:16). Finally he strongly encouraged that solution is the greatest need of man. Solution will sail more than anything else. If John Heavens helps men to get their solution, without any iota of doubt, JHeavens ministry will be everywhere soon. “That is why I have a slogan for this ministry and album which is 'VERY SOON JHEAVENS EVERYWHERE' he, Pastor Stanley, noted.” John Heavens can be reached on:- royaltreat88@gmail.com +2348163723607 Interviewed by Mr. Alex Emeka Akwaeze Mr. Okojevovoh Henry and Engr. preached to, and receive deliverance.” “We look forward to a situation where we can have an outreach crusade that will be solely devoted to music ministration which can encapsulate preaching and as said earlier win souls to the kingdom of God Almighty.” “Our performances are limited by instruments. We look forward l The amiable Mrs. John Heavens - a member of the singing ministry to having quality instruments that will properly showcase our performances to a higher degree. Hear him when asked his advice for younger artists.” To those coming up in the industry, his response was simple; they need to be called by God. emale genital mutilation or female circumcision refers to procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It still remains such a taboo topic in some countries as it is often kept quiet, hardly written about in mainstream publications and not discussed in the open. The silence this ritual attracts needs to change to a more proactive stance as female genital mutilation which has been part of history practised in some cultures for the longest while must be brought to an end. FGM should not be happening at all and I truly abhor, detest and loathe this physical abuse of girls in the so called name of ‘womanhood’.
Charlene James an award winning playwright has written a play called Cuttin’ It about this subject which is currently on a United Kingdom tour. Having seen it last month at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre I would strongly urge others to catch it at other venues around the country before it ends on the 30th July. It is one of the most powerful, thought provoking and moving plays that I as an avid theatre fan have witnessed and female genital mutilation is covered in the most sensitive and understanding way possible. I really applaud the manner in which this subject matter is dealt with in the play Cuttin’ It in a non-judgemental way. However FGM is one of the most barbaric and inhuman acts and no child no matter their age should have to be subjected to this method of torture in the name of tradition, culture, religious practices and beliefs. It certainly needs to be highlighted more in the public domain instead of behind closed doors so that the awareness for vulnerable girls who are known to be taken abroad on holidays without realizing what will be their fate can be tackled.

hen Military Nurse Elisabeth Burns undertook fundraising for Fisher House she had no way of knowing that only three years later the house would be there in her own family’s time of need. Since opening in April 2013, Fisher House has provided the equivalent of over 11,000 nights of accommodation for military patients being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and their loved ones. The house, a ‘home away from home’ for military patients and families, stands on the same site as the QE, which is home to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and is the primary receiving hospital for UK military personnel when they are injured or fall ill anywhere around the world. For RAF Emergency Nurse Specialist, Elisabeth Burns, she was able to stay in Fisher House for two months when her mother, Janice, received treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham following a heart attack in September 2015. Elisabeth was in Germany with the RAF when she received news that her mother had suffered a heart attack and had been taken to the QE to undergo and recover from bypass surgery. She rushed back to England, and whilst her mum was at the QE, she was able to stay at Fisher House, a five minute walk from the hospital. Elisabeth said: “It was in the aftermath of Mum’s surgery that Fisher House really helped me. My mum became quite unwell and was in Critical Care for over two weeks.” “Being at Fisher House meant I could be there for her 24/7. As she started on the road to recovery, it was so helpful being able to see her multiple times a day and it meant I could be there whenever she needed anything.” “I spent some time working clinically in the hospital as

RAF Nurse tells how Fisher House is helping military families Mum’s recovery progressed, and being at Fisher House meant that I could visit her every lunchtime and at the end of my shift as well as going back in the evening.” “The team was there for me right from the start, supporting both of us.” Elisabeth’s mum left the hospital in mid-November 2015. At this point Elisabeth had been staying in Fisher House for two months, and had also started vo-
lunteering to assist in welcoming people to the house, saying fondly that she almost became “part of the furniture” by the end. “I can’t emphasise enough how important Fisher House is to the families, in terms of the support they provide and the closeness of its proximity to the hospital. Whilst it is not a situation you would ever choose to be in, the house certainly provided me with the best place for me to be able to
look after my mum. Please consider giving your support to Fisher House, which relies entirely on charitable donations, and the military families that depend on it.” To donate £25 to Fisher House and provide a military family with one night of accommodation, please visit www.fisherhouseuk.org or call 0121 371 4852 for more information.

MUHAMMAD ALI TRIBUTES

Muhammad Ali celebrated in Tribute to ‘The Greatest’
T Everyone is so very sad to hear about the loss of our beloved brother Muhammad. He was such an iconic figure and we now all need to work to make his contribution to our world count. Kajans is pressing on to provide an innovative and relevant community landmark on the Hockley site where Muhammad Ali first launched the only Birmingham community provision with which he is associated. After 3 month consultation to gain community support and several designs down the
line we are on our way to producing an innovative development the site’.
We would like to publically thank the artists who took the time to create this Banksy style artistic tribute to the late Great Muhammad Ali. This was done over night on the site at Hockley: we don’t know the artist’s name but on behalf of the Birmingham community Kajans welcomes their creative spirit. - Kajans chair Soraya Patrick

l Special Olympics Athlete of the year, meets the Greatest of All time, and 1960 light heavyweight gold medalist Muhammad Ali.
We were invited to meet him in Nigeria when he visited some African countries before fighting George Foreman in the “Rumble in the Jungle” in Kinshasa in the DRC Congo, then temporarily called Zaire, where I had also previously served. He was very big, quietly spoken, polite and modest. He spoke very highly of George Foreman, saying that he would be extremely difficult to beat. We later saw the fight on TV, when he, of course, claimed to be “the greatest”. The difference between the private person and the public image
was very marked. He was much more than a great boxer, and will be remembered for many years to come. - Cllr. David Skinner
ributes came from several people who had seen him when he came to Birmingham in 1983 to open a community centre built in his honour and named after him. Following his passing, Birmingham paid its own final respect to The Greatest, with a special farewell service, for the late Muhammad Ali, at Holy Trinity Parish Church in Birchfield. Some of the local parishioners, though small in numbers for this event, paid their homage to the former 3-times World Heavyweight boxing champion as all who were present were able to reflect on the effect that the most overwhelmingly affective human being made on each one of their lives. Rev Canon Eve Pitts led the service which highlighted his sporting achievements, his worldwide impact and the universal legacy he left – the likes of which is unlikely to be equaled an any generation any time soon. “Along with Stokely Carmichael, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Angela Davis, Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley and their likes, he enabled our generation to hold our heads up high,” she said. “Our community does not honour our heroes and sheroes – we leave it for others to honour and dishonour them. We, as a race, must have the courage to honour our heroes and ‘sheroes’ and make sure their legacies – individually and collectively – live on. Even if I was here by myself, this special service would go on and I would still pay homage to the great man. I unapologetically embrace elements of life in the Black community when, often,
such spaces are becoming harder to find.” Bishop Dr Joe Aldred praised Rev Eve before saying: “Looking back to a time when Black degradation was a sport for so many, when lynching was carried out for the most minor of crimes, Muhammad Ali chose to stand up and refuse this degradation as a human being. He challenged the questionable antics of the Christian church, especially in the American south, when, as Cassius Clay, he found solace in the Nation of Islam and the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. “I make no apology. Muhammad Ali made us feel we had an identity that was quite distinct – one we could be proud of,” Dr. Aldred said. Tributes were paid by many of those who attended the service, with a very poignant contribution coming from poet, Tanya Chitunhu, who recited her own tribute to Ali in which she said: “You taught us to live our lives. This was your destiny – to be a beautiful, brilliant, Black man.” Others then paid their own tributes to The Greatest, including several who saw Ali when he visited Birmingham, in 1983, to open the community centre built in his name. This was another of the ground-breaking services and events that Rev Pitts had charge of, at the Anglican Holy Trinity Church. She held the UK’s first ‘Arise’ Memorial Service - to honour enslaved African ancestors - last year, with a second service this year, in September. She also held an ‘Arise Daughters’ service in February for women only and will hold an ‘Arise Black Men’ event on July 31.

Educating teens on what love really is
By Prophet Abiodun Ajayi of Christ Apostolic Church Wolverhampton UK cacpentecostalassembly@gmail.com 07404404716
T
oday teens are making serious and tragic mistakes on what really love is. Very often the reason behind such mistakes is the fact that teens like many adults don't really know what love is; they confuse real love with emotions and as result of this they have no basis on which to evaluate the relationship they peruse and the decision they make in search of real love. Here in this write up I am going to highlight on few things that love isn't. 1. Love isn't lust, Real love isn't the same as lust. Today songs and movies are about lust, not love. Lust and love are often confused in our minds, in our music, our movies and more importantly in our entire culture as well in all our daily activities. Love is far different from lust. Love gives; lust takes. Love values; lust uses. Love endures; lust subsides. Any love that attracted or demand something in return is not love. 2, Love is not the same as Romance: People in relationships experience emotional fireworks when they kiss. Some can speak words that make a girl feel so good inside. Some ladies can make a man feel taller and stronger than anyone else just by looking into his eyes. Mood music, slow dances, candlelight etc all this can make a moment special. When romance is just a feeling, but real love is much more. 3, Real love is not same as Infatuation. Infatuation is a fascination with an intense interest in someone of opposite sex. It can leave a young man or woman feeling breathless, starry-eyed, and lightheaded. 4, Real love is not the same as sex. Many young one's mix up intensity of sex with the intimacy of love. However, the two are distinct. Love is a process; sex is an act. Love is learned; sex is instinctive. Love requires constant attention; sex takes no effort. Love requires time to develop and mature, when sex need no time to develop. Also when love requires emotional and spiritual interaction, sex only requires physical interaction. On this note you my reader please bear it in mind, that real love is not the same as lust, romance, infatuation, or sex. Next edition we shall be looking at what real love is from the biblical perspective. Enjoy youself till we meet, yours in the Lord.

director Hermin McIntosh explained that the hunt was on for the gates as they would be hard to hide or sell on. She was also very excited about the number of offers from external organisations pledging to re-build and regenerate the building. Kay Oldroyd of Black Youth Achievements made a phoenix-like important announcement following her admission earlier this year that she had to cancel her annual awards ceremony (that had an 8 year history) due to financial and health issues:“I'm delighted to let you know that BYA Awards will be held this year on Saturday 26th November, London (venue and time to be confirmed). ‘Earlier on in the year I made a business decision to cancel the planned event of 16th July. ‘This prompted an amazing response from people (including Alison Bajaican who had planned to attend for her son’s 3rd birthday celebration) who realised that something as valuable as the BYA Awards could not be allowed to disappear based upon lack of investment - both financial and people wise. ‘So now, with the assistance and input of some committed individuals over the past couple of months, we are working together to make BYA Awards 2016 truly exceptional on many levels. ‘What this has shown is that there IS true community spirit and when we collaborate all things are possible. Updates regarding nominations, sponsorship, tickets and how you can contribute towards the ongoing success and development will follow over the forthcoming weeks. Another young lady, writer and poet Grace Akuba Quansah has dedicated ‘Always Brave, We are Here’ to the memory of Jo Cox, whose 42nd birthday just happened to coincide with the same date, 22nd June that the Empire Windrush arrived in London, Tilbury Docks in 1948. Written initially for Ealing’s Women of the Year Awards Ceremony last June, today she added a stanza (verse) to pay homage to this very brave Woman, Wife, Mother, Human Rights Campaigner and MP, whose death will Never Be In Vain.

NLA Urges Calm After Brexit Vote
R
esponding to the vote to leave the European Union (EU), Richard Lambert, Chief Executive Officer at the National Landlords Association (NLA), said: “Let’s just everyone, take a long, deep, calm breath. Leaving the EU is completely unknown territory, and jumping to conclusions isn’t going to help anyone. “We welcome Mark Carney’s steadying words and his reassurance that the Bank of England and the Treasury have extensive contingency plans in place to ensure the country’s financial stability. “Any knee-jerk reaction will have a real impact on our members’ mortgages, tenants’ rents and overall confidence in the market. So we would urge the policy as regards to interest rates should be, to continue the Prime Minister’s analogy, one of steady as she goes.” The National Landlords Association (NLA) is the UK’s leading organisation for private-residential landlords.

n light of the EU referendum, Michael Holmes, spokesperson for The Homebuilding & Renovating Shows, has provided comments on the potential impact the vote will have on the property market. “Many home buyers have stalled their decision making pending the outcome of the EU referendum as there have been so many uncertainties.” “Now the UK voted to leave the EU, many economists have predicted that the pound would fall in value and this could lead to an increase in interest rates to defend the value of the currency. If this was to happen, it would likely to have a negative impact on property prices.” “Given the long-standing imbalance between demand and supply in the UK housing market, it is likely that prices would recover in the medium term.”

OVERSEAS NEWS
Minister of Finance - From Poverty to Prosperity T he Hon Audley Shaw, Jamaica’s Minister of Finance – Ministry of Finance and Public Services; at a recent meeting in the UK set the context for the Partnership for Economic Growth in Jamaica within the following parameters: • Forty years of 1% GDP, almost two generations of marginal growth • Jamaica’s productivity as a nation has declined precipitously since the 1960’s when Jamaica’s productivity were among the best in the world • Jamaica’s role as commodity suppliers of raw material has dwindled as a result of Jamaica not keeping up with new technologies and economic diversification • Poverty and crime has overshadowed parts of Jamaica along with fear For too long Jamaican nationals have been conditioned to believe there is no better, but better must come. The Minister stated that: • From poverty to prosperity starts within the mind by the way we think. • The latest overview from the World Bank’s on the Jamaican economy March (2016) For decades, Jamaica has struggled with low growth, high public debt and many external shocks that further
weakened the economy. Over the last 30 years, real per capita GDP increased at an average of just one percent per year, making Jamaica one of the slowest growing developing countries in the world. • The Government has embarked on a concerted programme to boost growth while holding firm to the path of fiscal prudence, debt reduction and macroeconomic stability. How is this to be achieved? A new ministry has been established to focus on economic growth and job creation; a new Economic Growth Council has been formed that is charged with accelerating the implementation of new projects to achieve annual real economic growth of at least 5% within four years; economic growth ambassadors have been appointed. • Infrastructure economic growth $30M allocated - The Ministry of Industry, Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries has been allocated $3.5 billion of which: $2.4 billion is for the Sugar Transformation Programme to continue work on social infrastructure projects in Sugar Dependent Areas, to support the rehabilitation of cane roads and the installation of irrigation systems in select cane growing areas, while $465 million for the Agricultural Competiveness Project to, among other things, continue the development of irrigation infrastructure, to complete the new packing facility at New Forest and establish a fifth Agro Park in the New Forest/Duff House area of South
Manchester. • Expansion of Kingston, the Kingston to Morant Bay East West High Way and housing construction. • Jamaica is uniquely positioned to play a leading role in the medical marijuana industry. Jamaica must move with a sense of urgency and turn ganja which has been a negative for Jamaica into a major asset creating wealth for the Jamaican economy. In the United States alone the Legal marijuana market is predicted to rise from US$6.7 Billion in 2016 to US$21.8 Billion by 2020. Canada has built a major industry which is opening up for full legalization next year. The Dutch ministry of Health is exporting medical marijuana to Canada, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic. Israel which is the largest recipient of United Sates aid has over 12,000 medical marijuana patients and is leading the world in research on medical marijuana. • This is not about smoking a spliff. This is not about walking around with 2 ounces of weed. This is about building an industry of value- added products. This is about doing research at our universities to create medicines which can help people dealing with major illnesses such as diabetes, epilepsy, pain and many others. One simple breakthrough in any of these areas will contribute Billions of dollars to our economy. 12% of the Jamaican has diabetes and there is much to be done in regard to health and wellness. • The vision is about turning wasted land into growing hemp products which contain no psychoactive properties (THC) and can be used for food, textiles,

building materials and many other uses. We will build an industry in Jamaica where we process and manufacture value -added products and not export raw materials. The vision is about an opportunity for small farmers who will now earn from land which is presently sitting idle. This is about Jamaican Tourism industry where Jamaica will be positioned as the medical tourism capital for the world bringing Health and wellness to the world. With the development of Canasol for glaucoma and Asthmasol for asthma, the University of Technology will tomorrow host a Medical Marijuana Integration. Jamaica cannot afford to miss this boat. Where there is no Vision the people perish so we must change our mind-set and get ready for success. We must be bold while ensuring we meet all of our international obligations. • Jamaica has a 10 point plan for economic recovery. In the drive to economic growth and job creation, this government seeks partnerships with the private sector, the churches and civil society; we seek a close partnership with the hard working Jamaicans in this country; we will continue our special partnerships with the IMF and other multilateral partners, and we will extend current bilateral partnerships with friendly nations around the world. We will work to make these partnerships foster heightened growth and job creation for the Jamaican people. Prosperity begins in the mind we can create prosperity together by merging our strength to create prosperity.
waste into biomethane. We have had great success in the UK and Europe, in helping plant operators optimise their AD processes and boost energy production targets and we are excited to share our experience and expertise in this field with industry players in South East Asia,” Steve concluded. South East Asia has set ambitious renewable energy targets in the next decade. Indonesia, the region’s most populous nation, aims to raise its share of renewable energy from 4.79% in 2011 to 25% by 2025. The Philippines seeks to meet 50% of its primary energy needs from renewable energy by 2030, up from 40% currently, while Malaysia aims to increase its renewable energy production from 5.5% in 2015 to 7.8% in 2020.

here are uncanny developments between United States and Nigeria in respect of the Oduttola Brothers and Henry Ford. The American entrepreneur, and Manufacturer Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor company on June 16 1903, the exact first birthday anniversary of T. Adeola Odutola stands for Timothy, Henry Ford and Adeola Odutola both set up Rubber plantations for manufacturing tyres. Ford failed in his manufacturing of tyre ambition, but Odutola succeeded, establishing one of the most prominent and pioneering entrepreneurial tyre factory in Africa. Interestingly on March 16 1958, 53rd birthday anniversary of another tyre merchant and industrialist now late, Jimoh Odutola (Kid brother to Adeola Odutola) Henry Ford rolled out the 50th millionth Automobile

"We have many [mango] trees growing at our organic Emerald Farm, and wanted to celebrate the various types of mangoes found here on the island, while educating our guests and enhancing their experience with mango-inspired offerings." from his assembly line Henry Ford and Adeola Odutola both passed away in the month of April: Ford on April 7 1947 and Odutola on April 13, 1995. So when we celebrate the existence of the Ford motor, company, the producers of the Model T. Ford, we are invariably celebrating the life and times of T. Adeola Odutola , one of the first African Entrepreneurs to be featured in the Time Magazine. Henry Ford has a Foundation established in his name as a legacy of his service to humanity. Adeola Odutola also has a Foundation established to mark his service to humanity and keep his legacy as an entrepreneur. It should be noted that the Chairman of Adeola Odutola' foundation is Prof Akin L. Mabogunje born October 18 1931 the day the great Inventor Thomas Alva Edison passed Away. Henry Ford was Chief Engineer to Edison during his life time.

The Giant Ajaokuta Steel Company In Nigeria May Wake Up
T
he vision of the founding fathers of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) was to create the development of iron and steel industry that would be a key ingredient for the modernization of Nigeria and make her one of the world’s industrialized nations, thereby giving the country the ability to make input to agricultural development, generating employment, stimulate innovation for diverse technologies necessary for day to day need of ordinary people, thereby reduce poverty. The company was thus formed on 18th September 1979, with an agreement signed between Nigerian government and Tiajpromexport (TPE) of Russia in former Soviet Union to produce working drawings, supply and erection of equipment, structure and training of personnel for the plant. It was intended at the initial capacity to produce 1.3 million tonnes and gradually increase to 5.2 million tonnes per annum of long and flat sheet. It was by design a multifaceted industry with about 21 full fledge ancillary companies encapsulated within it. The principal units were to include iron and steelmaking, the rolling mills, repair facilities and the electric power generating/supply system. It is a sad story to note that as lofty as this objective appeared, and the urgency that this program should have, 37 years after the starting point, the dream is yet to be fully realized. Concerned about this sorry state, the National Assembly (NASS) committee on privatization led by Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (OON) and Hon Ahmed Yerima paid a working visit to the steel plant. In his joyful address of welcome, The Sole Administrator of the company, Engr. Isah Joseph Onobere (FNSE, FNMS, MNIM) had these excerpts to say; “The plant which is the bedrock of Nigeria’s foremost industrialization investment in one location
l Cross Section of Nass visitor & host
was 98% completed before TPE left Nigeria in 1994 because of administrative misunderstanding with the government.” “For these past 22 years, no meaningful progress has been recorded even in the first phase despite the huge potentials and benefits in liquid steel production to the economy and industrial development.” He counselled the National Council on Privatization (NCP) and all concerned with privatization of publicly owned entities to be very cautious in exercising the mandate on privatization when ASCL is involved. They should be weary of justification and the appropriateness of the timing before taking decisions, noting that Ajaokuta had witnessed two failed concessions
with the nation being worst for them. There was a protracted arbitration between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the last concessionaire at the London Court of Arbitration for 8 years running in evidence. Oshogbo and Jos steel rolling mills are still under lock and key since they were privatized in 2005 (over 10 years ago). The vision for leveraging Nigeria to achieve the hallowed objective of 2020, propelling the Change Agenda to an unassailable height should not be privatized until the project is completed, commissioned and its operation is stabilized, before consideration for or not privatizing. “At our level, Nigeria deserve to own and operate a steel plant
modeled after India, that has five integrated strong public sector steel economy, which had been running for decades despite having lead private steel plant owners world over.” “India is still expanding her steel production capacity. TPE, the builder of our own, is interestingly involved in their expansion process.” The inherent danger of selling off our own at this stage are 1. It will be sold off as scraps 2. The extra facilities meant to enhance our national capacity for industrializing the economy and ensuring our technological independence will be lost 3. Liquid steel may not be produced as the outstanding infrastructures are yet to be completed. 4. Steel raw materials would be exported in the interest of foreign investors and the products thereof imported back to Nigeria at an exorbitant prices as we are doing to crude oil today. Selling off ASCL and her sister National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) at their present level of completion will be a colossal loss to the socio- economic development and the technological independence of the nation. Furthermore, he craves the indulgence of the NASS committee to the requirement vital to the completion of the project which had been unattended to despite several representations to past Governments since 1983 viz: i. Provision of outstanding requisite external infrastructure (railways, roads, ports and handling facilities) for bringing in imported raw materials and evacuating products from the plant for export ii. Opening up and development
of local mines to assure unfettered availability of raw materials iii. Funds for reactivating completed units and completing the balance of works at the steel plant
ANTI COMPLETION PROPAGANDA
Since the termination of the of the project with TPE in 1996, the design has been under fierce anti-completion from other parts of the world because of the EastWest cold war and a hang-over of contemporary economic re-colonization from other parts of the world. This has brought about much false-hood against the project,
because they reason that the day liquid steel starts to roll out of Ajaokuta, the sky would be the limit for the country. A plea went to those in authority to make the project a reality and shun the campaign against. He used the medium to recognize and appreciate the workers both past and present, for their determination and resoluteness to continue to endure all the challenges that came their way by non payment of salary for a time as long as up to 13 months, in some instances and without promotion.
SUGGESTED WAY FORWARD
l Engr Isah Joseph Onobere(FNSE, FNMS, MNIM)
l Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce (oon)
l Hon. Ahmed Yerima
Notwithstanding the arbitration proceeding, in our opinion, the FGN should urgently muster the will to rehabilitate, complete and put into operation ASCL and NIOMCO to avoid further deterioration and foster technological economic development of the nation since the ownership of the plant is not in contest. Thus FGN would have to:
1. Complete ASCL/NIOMCO and the external infrastructure 2. Operate the plant through management agreement with the builders TPE, for 18 months project performance guarantee period as contained in the main contract. 3. Consider full privatization at the appropriate threshold through any viable Public Private Participation (PPP) In conclusion he welcomed NASS committee members to the plant and wished them a fruitful tour and positive decision towards making the plant functional to the advantage of the country and the world at large.
The slide show of the entire project was shown to the visitor after the short speech. At the end, the Leader, Sen. Murray-Bruce, (on behalf of other NASS members), who had listened and viewed the slide shows with rap attention, thanked the Sole Administrator, the management and the entire members of Staff for their good performance. He promised to do his best to draw the attention of the FGN authority to the opportunities that are lying in waste in ASCL and NIOMCO. It is to be noted that this is another hope where an official delegate will visit Ajaokuta and at the end, would make a true heart felt promise. We pray that this will translate into reality. ike the late Great, he comes from a very humble background and as the worlds greatest sports personality did, Waine ‘Homeboy’ Turner holds three world championship belts after winning an I.S.K.A. World Cruiserweight Kickboxing battle, in Germany, home of his tough opponent, Frank Schnieder. The 49-year-old, who won his latest belt in Stuttgart, at the time when the world was made aware of Muhammad Ali’s passing, dedicated the win to the former heavyweight boxing legend, as it was he, Turner recalls, who was the inspiration behind him turning to combat sport, ever since he was a child. The astutely humble and versatile Birmingham-based fighter, who previously held I.S.K.A. cruiserweight and W.A.K.O. World Championship belts, always talked about the time Ali first visited Birmingham – to open a community centre in his name – and, as a child, falling in love with an Ali toy he set sights on when out shopping; “I will always be thankful to ‘The Greatest’ after seeing the toy of him in a window. The thing for me, though, was that it wasn’t moving around as he did in the ring. I also have to dedicate my win to another, without whom, I wouldn’t have achieved what I did – Vincent ‘Black Dragon’ Lewis. He was the man who got me into combat sport and he is the man who has been by my side ever since. So this is also for you Vince.”

uhammad Ali's last wish was that people from all walks of life could gather together to bid him one final goodbye. Surely, he would have been pleased with what took place just a few steps from where he made his pro debut more than a half century ago. Boxing royalty mixed easily with common folks inside the convention center. Muslims prayed during the service attended by Christians, Jews and nonbelievers. And over on one side, those with sharp eyes saw civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson lean over a row of chairs to hug Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam. Yes, it would have pleased Ali, probably even more than will Friday's star-studded memorial service, which features at least one president and a king. These were his people, from spiky-haired Don King waving flags to 73-year-old Barbara Hill-

Young, old, Black, white and all religions.’’ The grip that Ali has on this town was never hard to measure. There’s a Muhammad Ali Boulevard and a Muhammad Ali Center, and in recent weeks his childhood home was opened for visits and figures to become yet another tourism attraction. Mostly, though, they seemed happy just to be part of the traditional Muslim prayer service known as Jenazah. ‘’We’re going to be prayerful, calm and loving,’’ an early speaker told the crowd. ‘’Muhammad

This may have been the place of Ali’s first fight - a six-rounder against a 186-pound journeyman named Tunney Hunsaker - but this wasn’t a day for fighting, or even thinking about fights. This was bigger than that. The man himself was bigger than boxing. US President, Barak Obama, said: “Ali shook up the world and the world is better for it. Jackson remembered Ali walking in with football legend Jim Brown to a hotel room in New York City on April 4, 1967, as King was preparing to give his famous anti-Vietnam war speech at the Riverside Church. It was a few weeks before Ali would refuse to step forward in the draft, and Jackson said his presence in the room both emboldened King and made him feel he had someone powerful on his side. ‘’Dr. King gave up his life, Ali gave up his career,’’ Jackson said. ‘’Getting together that day was a big deal. The nation saw his support. He was not only a championship fighter but a human rights activist.’’ On a warm day in Louisville, it would have been hard to find anyone who would argue with that.

Guangzhou Sport University President, Professor Huang Zihua, said: “I am very glad to be in the ‘heart of England’ and visiting Birmingham.” “Although boasting a long history, Birmingham City University is one of Britain's most modern higher learning institutions in terms of facilities and is a vibrant, multicultural institution.” “I believe there is a great potential for cooperation between Birmingham City University and GSU, and I’m also hoping that our cooperation will be an in-depth one, ensuring that the fruits of a partnership will be greater.” Professor John Deane, Head of School Allied and Public Health Professions, Birmingham City University said: “The University is delighted to have signed a strategic international partnership with the highly prestigious Guangzhou Sports University.” “This partnership has great potential to develop in a multitude of mutually benefi-
ox Clever, the boxing club run by former World Champion Wayne Elcock, has turned hundreds of children’s lives around, boosted fitness, reduced crime, self-esteem and community relations, and has now been recognised with a nomination for a Police and Crime commissioner’s Outstanding Citizens award. Four years after he started the scheme, which was initially only intended to run for 12 weeks, it has been nominated for the PCC’s Outstanding Community Project Award. The 42-year-old said: “Boxing 100 per cent turned my life around. It gave me focus, vision and positivity and kept me away from people and things I shouldn’t be near.” “When I was boxing in London people would say ‘he’s forgotten about us’. But I knew the more titles I won, the more I could put Birmingham on the map and come back and help. I grew up in Shard End with no money and no hope and the kids can see that I’m living proof that you can turn your life around.” West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “Wayne’s non-contact boxing club is a perfect example of what a bit of community spirit, hard graft and discipline can achieve. He and his boxers are a credit to our region.” The winners will be announced at a ceremony on July 13 at The REP in Birmingham.

It will also enhance strategic alliances we are currently developing with many of the professional sports teams in the City.” Elsewhere, Birmingham City University recently became one of few institutions globally to be given approval by the Chinese Government to set up a jointly run higher education institute in China.

he British Basketball Federation (BBF) has published its vision and strategy for basketball in Britain as a result of a consultation process that has involved representatives from the respective Boards of Basketball England, Basketball Scotland and Basketball Wales, as well as the Basketball Foundation, British Basketball League (BBL) and Women's British Basketball League (WBBL) and other interested parties. Together with public input through the futureofbasketball. co.uk website, over 1000 people have contributed to this vision and high level strategy. However, this is just the beginning of the process and engagement, which we believe can change the way the sport works and also create a culture that will sustain growth in the long term. It is very much a long term vis-
ion; it will take several Olympic cycles to build the GB teams to where they aspire to be and to build the sport from the grassroots up to create a stronger fan base, a bigger and better pool of players and officials -as well as increasing the awareness and profile of the sport across all age groups. The passionate people who follow the teams, play the games, and administer the clubs at every level of the sport are the focus of this strategy. The BBF, together with its three Home Country Association members, are responsible for leading, co-ordinating and supporting their efforts to develop the sports many participants. The document 'Transforming Basketball in Britain Together' is available on gbbasketball.com and will also be available on futureofbasketball.co.uk - together with a summary of the feedback from the public consultation.
The document identifies six interlinked strategic outcomes, the strategic objectives that underpin that and 10 immediate strategic priorities. The next step through six advisory working groups is to develop the actions plans to deliver these with milestones and targets against which progress will be measured. We will report back regularly on these working groups and it is intended to complete the whole process by the end of the year. The BBF is grateful for the support of FIBA, Sport England and Deloitte for the process so far and for the commitment and engagement of all those who have contributed to the consultation process. In particular, in targeting the inactive (especially in under 25 and over 50 age groups), in developing the women's game, by increasing the capabilities and enjoyment
of children and young people in sport, in supporting the many volunteers who make sport happen and developing our core of regular and talented players. This will be enhanced by investing in facilities at the heart of communities and joining up the work and activity of basketball groups in those communities. BBF Chair, Nick Humby, said; "The time is right to be taking on the challenge of transforming basketball in Britain with the coming together of the three home nations and in the context of the new DCMS led strategy for Active Nations.” “We have made the first steps in building the relationships to foster belief and confidence in our sport and we look forward to making progress in the months and years ahead."

atthew Hudson-Smith produced a scintillating run on his home track to win the British Championships 400m title and join the other 37 athletes who have secured automatic selection for the Olympic Games. The Birchfield Harrier got out of the blocks hard, leading down the back straight. Coming off the bend he pushed again to move away from Rabah Yousif and Martyn Rooney to stop the clock in season’s best 44.88. That run earned him Performance of Day, and afterwards he commented: “It feels amazing; I can’t put it into words! To know I am now going to Rio is just indescribable.” There was another young winner in the women’s 200m final as Dina Asher-Smith tore round the bend to win her first 200m British Championships in 23.11 (-0.1m/s). She didn’t have it all her own way, as fellow youngster Desiree Henry ran her very close; two hundredths to be precise, as both women ensured they’ll be running at their first Olympic Games in August.
“I am really happy - it’s a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to go to the Olympics. I can’t believe it. It’s a weird feeling because it doesn’t become about the race or about winning because it is so much more than that.” The men’s 200m was also a brilliant race that went right down to the wire, Adam Gemili holding off Danny Talbot by the width of his vest. Coming off the bend those two were clear of the field, but Gemili started to tighten up in the final 20 metres, allowing Talbot to come very close, their final times 22.44 (-0.1m/s) to 22.46. With that, the two athletes are off to Rio. “I’m over the moon – it’s the best feeling in the world. I had to come here and run a time, and finish in the top two to guarantee selection, so it is a big relief I’ve done that. There have been a lot of guys running very quick this year. I am going to Rio to make the final and medal. If I don’t medal I’ll be quite disappointed and I think that’s the attitude you need to have.”
